In fact, what are we doing exactly when linking
'/usr/share/alsa/alsa.conf.d/pulse.conf' file
and '/etc/alsa/conf.d' directory?

Ok, good! Linking the two files ("ln -s /usr/share/alsa/alsa.conf.d/pulse.conf
/etc/alsa/conf.d")

'mocp' works normally now, there are no errors ("mocp -D" and no errors in
'mocp_client_log' / 'mocp_server_log').

So, what happens exactly? What is the exact problem here? Which package is
"buggy"?

Could you please try as root:

# ln -s /usr/share/alsa/alsa.conf.d/pulse.conf /etc/alsa/conf.d

and test again?

I created asound.conf in /etc and inserted:

defaults.pcm.card 0
defaults.ctl.card 0

but that do not help, even after a system reboot; I still get same error
mentionned at the beginning of this bug report when I execute 'mocp'.

I have no troubles with 'qmmp' if pulseaudio module is activated in qmmp
settings instead of the alsa one.

I also suspect alsa stuff but not sure what exactly.
All audio/video programs I tried works fine, except 'moc'; and 'moc' is my
favorite! :(

Not on pure sid, but siduction, I have the exact same issue, I end up with

"FATAL_ERROR: No valid sound driver!

FATAL_ERROR: Server exited!"

My guess is that this is not an issue with mocp but with alsa. See my findings
in the siduction forums

Hmmm, I run sid on a Lenovo T500 with a similar sound device as

Cache file deleted (.moc/cache) but I still get same error as pasted in first
message.
Moc config file just have the following line: Theme =
/usr/share/moc/themes/black_theme
I don't have a custom config; I use defaults.

---

I have a sid vm almost fresh. I just installed 'mocp' and it starts just fine.

But I started 'chromium' and played a youtube video and 'mocp' doesn't start; I
get same error.

So, 'mocp' crashes with the error message I pasted in the first message if I
try to run it while
any other application is playing audio/video.

Same problem so in the host and in the vm, both sid and both up to date.

Nothing suspicious. Well, my setup on my T500 is very similar and
moc plays fine. There are 2 more things to check:

1. Delete your cache file ($HOME/.moc/cache)
2. If you want I can test your $HOME/.moc/config in my setup.

Hmm, are you running an a52 based sound device? Ist your sound card
an usb connected one? Please have a look at
https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=912921

For this bug I've prepared a fix which is just pending.

I just realized that 'mocp' crashes with the message pasted at the beginning of
this report
when there is another application playing sound.
Example: I run a youtube video on firefox. I start 'mocp' and it crashes.
If I close the youtube video on firefox, 'mocp' starts fine.

I wonder why this issue started to happen just recently, and why now 'mocp'
displays 'PCM' next
to the volume level in the volume bar (example: 50 PCM). I think it doesn't do
that days ago.
According to dpkg.log, 'alsa-utils', 'libasound2', 'libasound2-data' and
'libasound2-plugins'
have been upgraded a few days ago.
Not sure if there is a correlation between those upgrades and 'moc'...

There goes 'mocp_server_log' if it can help.
According to dpkg.log, 'alsa-utils', 'libasound2', 'libasound2-data' and
'libasound2-plugins'
have been upgraded a few days ago.

I do not have '.asoundrc' or any special config file for 'moc' or system sound.

Package: moc
Version: 1:2.6.0~svn-r2984-1
Severity: important

Dear Maintainer,

Until yesterday 'moc' worked just fine. But now when I start it I get:

"mocp -D

FATAL_ERROR: No valid sound driver!

FATAL_ERROR: Server exited!"

Disabling 'pulseaudio' donot help.

Since a few days, before having the referred issue, I noticed that 'mocp' shows
"PCM" next to volume percentage in the volume bar;
it doesn't do that previously, it always only showed volume percentage.
