I've separated logsave out into its own (Priority: optional) package[1];
it's currently pending in the NEW queue as part of the e2fsprogs
1.45.3 release.

Bug#923372: e2fsprogs: sharing of /sbin/logsave

2019-02-26 Thread Dmitry Bogatov

Package: e2fsprogs
Version: 1.44.5-1
Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,

for long time e2fsprogs were essential, and bin:initscripts used
/sbin/logsave from e2fsprogs. Nowdays, e2fsprogs are not essential,
so initscripts switched to using /sbin/logsave on best-effort basis (use
if present), which is suboptimal.

Upstream maintainer of sysvinit imported sources of logsave from
e2fsprogs into sysvinit, and now initscripts can again be sure, that
logsave is present, if we settle question, who will provide
/sbin/logsave.

So here I propose, that e2fsprogs no longer installs logsave, and it
switch owner to bin:sysvinit-utils. Not the best solution, given there
is desire (but not much of action) of dropping essential flag from
bin:sysvinit-utils.

Alternatively, one of us could build bin:logsave.

Best regards, one of sysvinit Debian maintainers.
