As situation has clearly improved (touchpad works fine here now on my machines
too, where they did not before), I'm closing this bug.

@dinar: maybe you can check if it works for you now, with latest images?

It does work for me in the latest builds that use libinput, indeed.

Now that the graphical installer uses libinput instead of evdev, maybe it's
worth it to try if it works for you now with latest builds?

You are right to being cautious :)

But you can download through https with

https://people.debian.org/~sthibault/tmp/mini.iso

to make sure that it is coming from the people.debian.org domain,
which only Debian Developers like myself can put data on. And Debian
Developers can already upload anything to the Debian archive, see for
instance your /usr/share/doc/libc6/changelog.Debian.gz to see that you
are already using packages that I have uploaded to Debian. I have signed
this mail, for good measure.

Not unless they have a way to actually reach your laptop.

> and seems that info is not useful to know out exact touchpad model.

It definitely is! Depending on the laptop brand and manufacture, making
the touchpad work will vary. On my XPS13, it is connected through i2c to
a PCI intel lpss card. On another laptop, exactly the same model of
touchpad could be connected another way, thus requiring another driver.

"Dinar, could you try the image from

i have downloaded it but then become afraid , that malware may be
there. (even if i remove hdd, firmware can be infected). maybe i
will/would do it, when/if i read some amount of information about you.

"This bug report is unlikely to be actionable unless you specify

i was going to write exact laptop model, but i became afraid that this
information can help somebody to infect my laptop's firmwares. and
seems that info is not useful to know out exact touchpad model.

I found that the i2c bus is behind a PCI card which is driven by the
intel_lpss_pci driver. Loading this by hand got the touchpad detected.
Xorg didn't pick it up however, only the touchscreen.

I tried to rmmod i2c_designware_platform on my installed system, the
mouse stopped working, so it seems to be required, at the very least.

I tried to add i2c-modules to a g-i image, i2c_designware_platform
didn't get loaded automatically, and even loading it manually didn't
make the mouse detected.

Bug#946118: synaptics touchpad does not work in debian installer graphical mode

2019-12-03 Thread Samuel Thibault
Hello,

Thinking of it... IIRC the touchpad is not working on my DELL XPS13
laptop in g-i. What I can see of it on normal boot of installed system is:

[6.097298] input: DELL07E6:00 06CB:76AF Mouse as
/devices/pci:00/:00:15.1/i2c_designware.1/i2c-8/i2c-DELL07E6:00/0018:06CB:76AF.0002/input/input12
[6.097660] input: DELL07E6:00 06CB:76AF Touchpad as
/devices/pci:00/:00:15.1/i2c_designware.1/i2c-8/i2c-DELL07E6:00/0018:06CB:76AF.0002/input/input13
[6.098066] hid-generic 0018:06CB:76AF.0002: input,hidraw1: I2C HID v1.00
Mouse [DELL07E6:00 06CB:76AF] on i2c-DELL07E6:00

and lsmod | grep i2c gives

i2c_designware_platform16384 0
i2c_designware_core20480 1 i2c_designware_platform
i2c_i801 32768 0
i2c_hid28672 0
hid 126976 4 i2c_hid,usbhid,hid_multitouch,hid_generic

I don't see the i2c_designware* modules in the g-i image, perhaps that
needs to be included for some hardware?

This bug report is unlikely to be actionable unless you specify
*exactly* which model of computer you are using. There are literally
hundreds of different touchpad devices out there.
