The latest buster version was mistakenly built without optimization.
I am working on an update.

Best wishes,
Mike

Bug#964177: chromium: high cpu load and frequent crashes

2020-07-03 Thread David Raison
We have a number of workstations running Debian 10 in our office and all
have exhibited the same behavior after an upgrade to 83.0.4103.116-2
from buster-security.

100% CPU usage on all available cores for tabs and extensions even if
there is no specific activity in them. I have no stack traces to offer,
but can confirm that downgraded back to version 80 from stable gives us
a usable browser again and I will happily supply whatever further
information is required.

Bug#964177: chromium: high cpu load and frequent crashes

2020-07-03 Thread Alexis Huxley
Package: chromium
Version: 83.0.4103.116-1~deb10u1
Severity: important

Dear Maintainer,

I've got Debian 10 and apply nightly updates as they become
available. I was running chromium version 80.0.3987.162 but
that was upgraded to 83.0.4103.116 a couple of nights ago. Since
then CPU load at page load time is very high, the interface is
generally sluggish and it crashes several times per day.

As per reportbug's recommendation, I tried to upgrade to the
version of chromium/chromium-common/chromium-sandbox that are
currently in testing (83.0.4103.116-2) but chromium then fails to
start due to a dependency issue (error while loading shared
libraries: libicui18n.so.67: cannot open shared object file: No
such file or directory) that could not be resolved without
a cascade of updates that is not feasible on a critical system.

Googling, the only report I found that came close in terms of
behaviour *and* mentions the same chromium version is
https://bugs.chromium.org/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=1101765,
to which I added a comment.

I also tried disabling all extensions and trying '--no-sandbox'
bu these made no difference.

I cannot tell if the high cpu load and the crashes are related
but at least for the latter there is some concrete output. The
crashes are happening frequently, so this output (from
~/.xsession-errors) includes a couple of stack dumps.

If you need more information, want me to run with special
flags, test a Debian 10-compatible version, etc then let me know.
Switching to testing is not feasible.

Alexis
