Bug#979017: chromium 87 with hw accel, opening a second window freezes the UI

2021-01-22 Thread Anthony Atkinson
Hello,

I was looking into this a little and noticed that
http://crbug.com/1141354 was reopened. #980482 mentions this may be
related, and is still open and release critical, but seeing that the
upstream bug has been reopened, I figured this may deserve to be as well
since it looks like a one-to-one match between the two (regardless of
whether the RC bug is related/unrelated).

Cheers,
Anthony Atkinson

Same here.

I wasn't even able to get to the Settings view in order to disable
hardware acceleration.
Found out about --disable-gpu and using that makes it usable again.

(This is running on a boring i915 of a Thinkpad X230)

Control: tag -1 upstream fixed-upstream

I think http://crbug.com/1141354 is the same bug upstream.

Reproduced with google-chrome-stable (M87), and confirmed it does seem
to be fixed already in google-chrome-beta (M88).

Bug#979017: chromium 87 with hw accel, opening a second window freezes the UI

2021-01-01 Thread Ryan Tandy
Package: chromium
Version: 87.0.4280.88-0.4~deb10u1
Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,

First of all: thank you VERY much for working on chromium in Debian!

With the new version in stable-security, when I open a second window by
pressing Ctrl-N or Ctrl-Shift-N, all browser windows (even the first)
stop redrawing and appear frozen.

The browser actually still responds to input, the cursor changes if I
mouseover different things, the right-click menu appears and works fine,
only the browser windows never redraw. I can force it to redraw by
resizing the window, but it stays frozen the rest of the time.

If I disable hardware acceleration, the problem goes away and everything
seems to work normally.

I am not running any desktop environment, just "awesome" as window
manager. I'm also not running any X compositing manager such as
xcompmgr.

GPU info from chrome://gpu: VENDOR=0x8086 [Google Inc.], DEVICE=0x1916 [ANGLE
(Intel Open Source Technology Center, Mesa DRI Intel(R) HD Graphics 520
(Skylake GT2), OpenGL 4.5 core)] *ACTIVE*

Please, let me know if I can provide any further information, or if I
should send this upstream.

thank you,
Ryan
