Bug#300638: ircd-hybrid: ircd segfaults after some operations (joining channels, setting topics) on amd64

2006-02-25 Thread axel
ircd disconnects users after some operations (randomly) - joining channels,
setting topics, just writing messages.
Or just segfaults with messages in log:

ircd-hybrid[26445]: segfault at 0001 rip 2af89be0 rsp
7fe6d388 error 4
ircd-hybrid[913]: segfault at rip 2af89be0 rsp
7ff4ea78 error 4

Well, I read hybrid mailing list and follow advice
http://lists.ircd-hybrid.org/pipermail/hybrid/2004-July/000129.html - recompile
ircd from source package with
gcc-4.0.3. Visually ircd segfaults not so often, but anycase it occurs.

use winbind only for host name resolution in a little network of three
Windows and on Debian boxes.
I hope my information makes it easier, to find the bug.

Have a nice weekend

Bug#304610: dpkg does not function under Fedora Core 3, patch provided

2005-04-14 Thread Axel Liljencrantz
Package: dpkg
Version: 1.9.21

When trying to use dpkg together to build a debian package under
Fedora Core 3, dpkg exits with an error message saying "no gcc-lib
component". This is because dpkg expects gcclib to live in

/usr/share/gcc-lib/.../

but under Fedora Core 3, it lives under

/usr/share/gcc/.../

A suggest the following patch be applied to enquiry.c. It fixes this
issue by first checking for a /gcc-lib/ component in the gcclib path,
and if none exists, checks for a /gcc/ path. This should have _no_
impact on systems unaffected by this bug.

711a712,718
>   if( !p ){
> p= strstr(vb.buf,"/gcc/");
> if (p) p+= 5;
>   }
> else
> p+= 9;
>
713d719
<   p+= 9;

If there is a need for transfering copyright even for such a trivial
patch, I willingly transfer copyright to the fsf, debian, Bill Gates
or whoever is applicable.

I am using Fedora Core 3.

If you think it doesn't matter if dpkg works under non-Debian systems,
please reconsider. I want my software to support Debian systems, but I
am not willing to let that dictate my choice of distribution. That is
why I am doing my best to make dpkg work under my computer. Thank you
for your time.

Bug#305906: ppp doesn't create a dsl-connection

2005-04-22 Thread Axel Keuchel
Package: ppp
Version: 2.4.3-20050321+1
Today I've updated the above mentioned package. After the next reboot, I
couldn't start a DSL-connection via rp.pppoe. No browser-activity, no
ping, nothing.
The onle message from plog:

Apr 22 21:19:17 localhost pppd[3489]: Plugin rp-pppoe.so loaded.
Apr 22 21:19:18 localhost pppd[3521]: pppd 2.4.3 started by root, uid 0
Apr 22 21:19:18 localhost pppd[3521]: sendPacket: send: Network is down
Apr 22 21:19:18 localhost pppd[3521]: Exit.
I knew this behaviour, 'cause I had it with Sid a few weeks ago. For the
running session I can start a dsl-connection after running pppoeconf.
But this will only last for the current session. After a reboot, pon
dsl-provider fails again.
Downgrading ppp to some 2.4.2-version is a kind of workaround.

I'm using Debian Sarge, kernel 2.6.12-rc2

Just out of curiosity: I can see why the ABI transition prevents you
from uploading a new version of openexr/libopenexr but I don't see how
that explains the problem with exrheader in the first place. Any
insightfull comments?

Bug#325417: ITP: wikipedia2text -- displays Wikipedia articles on the command line

2005-08-28 Thread Axel Beckert
Subject: ITP: wikipedia2text -- displays Wikipedia articles on the command line
Package: wnpp
Owner: Axel Beckert <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Severity: wishlist

* Package name: wikipedia2text
  Version : 0.05
  Upstream Author : Christian Brabandt <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
* URL : http://www.256bit.org/~chrisbra/wiki
* License : Public Domain
Description : displays Wikipedia articles on the command line

This bash script fetches Wikipedia articles (currently supports
English and German) using elinks or lynx -dump, strips off everything
not related to the content and displays the content in pager, sends it
to standard out, opens the Wikipedia article in a (possibly GUI)
browser or just shows the URL of the Wikipedia article.

The original script is named "wiki" which seems useful when regarding
how fast it's typed, but inappropriate for installing it somewhere
system wide, because wiki is a concept and not a short form for
wikipedia. So I plan to call script and package "wikipedia2text".

at http://blog.256bit.org/archives/126-Wikipedia-in-der-Shell.html:

Which means roughly translated to English:

  it.

I asked the author by mail if this statement should mean the script is
public domain and and he acknowledged it.

Since the author of the software is German, and German law does not
allow the concept of public domain (by will), the package cannot be
published as public domain.

When asked, if this statement could also be interpreted as BSD
license, the author mentioned that he had a BSD license in mind when
he wrote the statement mentioned above. So he's fine with the BSD
license at /usr/share/common-licenses/BSD

Bug#327503: tcsh: %j in $prompt doesn't work as documented but breaks the whole prompt

2005-09-10 Thread Axel Beckert
Package: tcsh
Version: 6.14.00-1
Severity: normal

A $prompt for tcsh containing the substring '%j' does not work as
documented ('%j' means the number of backgound jobs according to
tcsh(1).) Instead, if the above mentioned substring is contained in
$prompt, the whole prompt _just_ contains the number of jobs.

BTW: That number is also updated in a somehow delayed kind -- only the
next non-internal command after putting a job in the background updates
the prompt, e.g. fg, bg, jobs, etc. do not update it while calling an
non-existent command, e.g. 'c', works fine updating the number. But I
think, it doesn't make sense to file that bug as long as %j is nearly
complete unusable.

Example:

  set prompt='%S\\!%h ?%? %%%j L%$shlvl%s [EMAIL PROTECTED]:%l%b'" %B%P [%c05]
%#%b "

results in a prompt just containing

  0

while

  set prompt='%S\\!%h ?%? %%X L%$shlvl%s [EMAIL PROTECTED]:%l%b'" %B%P [%c05]
%#%b "

works fine (number of jobs replaced by 'X') and results on this box to

  !19 ?0 %X L1 [EMAIL PROTECTED]:pts/3 16:13:32 [~] >

P.S.: This bug also seems to be in Sarge's version of tcsh (6.13.00),
not only in Sid's version (6.14.00). In Woody's 6.11.00 the problem
didn't appear since the %j feature was introduced in 6.11.01. (Where it
worked when compiled from sources. I also remember that a self compiled
6.12.00 worked fine.)

Bug#403930: xemacs21-basesupport: vm silently drops mails if /usr/bin/sendmail rejects them

2006-12-20 Thread Axel Beckert
Package: xemacs21-basesupport
Version: 2005.03.07-1, 2006.05.10-1
Severity: grave
Justification: causes non-serious data loss
Tags: sarge, etch

The MUA vm from xemacs21 (21.4.17-1 on Sarge, 21.4.19-2 on Etch, too)
does not report anything if mails which should be sent out are
rejected by /usr/sbin/sendmail, e.g. because of their size, even on a
virgin account. The user does not have any clue, that the mail didn't
go out and wonders why nobody has received the mail.

Example / How to reproduce:

Start xemacs under a virgin user account. Type M-x vm. Type m in the
newly popped up window. Set recipient and subject in the again newly
popped up window. Type M-x vm-mime-attach-file and attach one or more
files so that in their sum they are bigger than the local MTA is
configured to accept.

In our case the limit of the local postfix is (IIRC by default) set to
10 MB and we attached an appropriately big tar.gz.

Type C-c C-c to send the mail out. The window closes and postfix from
Sarge writes to its log file:

Dec 20 17:28:49 malfoy postfix/postdrop[30418]: warning: uid=4977: File too
large
Dec 20 17:28:49 malfoy postfix/sendmail[30417]: fatal: xtaran(4977): Message
file too big

Postfix from Etch writes instead:

Dec 20 17:53:42 ankara postfix/postdrop[31933]: warning: uid=4977: Illegal seek
Dec 20 17:53:42 ankara postfix/sendmail[31932]: fatal: xtaran(4977): queue file
write error

The user who sent the mail did not get any notice about that and
therefore doesn't know he just lost that mail.

It's even worse on Etch: There vm claims to have sent out the mail by
naming a buffer "sent mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED]" (or whereever you
planned to send that mail). On the other hand, this means that you
have less serious data loss on Etch. :-)

To check that postfix did not only log the message to the error log, I
tried to send out a similar mail using /usr/sbin/sendmail directly (on
Sarge):

$ /usr/sbin/sendmail [EMAIL PROTECTED] < 20-MB-Test-Mail.txt
postdrop: warning: uid=4977: File too large
sendmail: fatal: xtaran(4977): Message file too big
$ echo $?
69
$

On Etch /usr/sbin/sendmail returns with exit code 75.

I have looked through the vm variables and functions but haven't found
any which configures how to care about sendmail's return values or
messages (as e.g. mutt does). It also doesn't seem to have any
customisation via M-x customize RET mail.

Bug#403953: emacs21-common: smtpmail silently drops mails if they /usr/bin/sendmail rejects them

2006-12-20 Thread Axel Beckert
Package: emacs21-common
Version: 21.4a-1
Severity: grave
Justification: causes non-serious data loss
Tags: sarge, etch

At least M-x vm for GNU Emacs 21 (from the vm package, versions 7.19-4
in Sarge, 7.19-11 in Etch) and M-x mail from GNU Emacs 21 do not
report anything if mails which should be sent out are rejected by
/usr/sbin/sendmail, e.g. because of their size, even on a virgin
account. The user does not have any clue, that the mail didn't go out
and wonders why nobody has received the mail.

Both use the underlying smtpmail library, and if mail is sent out
using smtpmail's SMTP engine, it reports error, but if it's sendmail
engine is used, it reports none.

This bug is more or less identical to
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=403930 which also
concerns smtpmail, but the version included in xemacs21-basesupport
for XEmacs 21.

Example / How to reproduce:

Start emacs under a virgin user account. Type M-x vm. Type m in the
newly popped up window. Set recipient and subject in the again newly
popped up window. Type C-c C-a attach one or more files so that in
their sum they are bigger than the local MTA is configured to accept.

In our case the limit of the local postfix is (IIRC by default) set to
10 MB and we attached an appropriately big tar.gz.

Type C-c C-c to send the mail out. The window closes and postfix from
Sarge writes to its log file:

Dec 20 17:53:42 ankara postfix/sendmail[31932]: fatal: xtaran(4977): queue file

The user who sent the mail did not get any notice about that and
therefore doesn't know he just lost that mail.

It's even worse on Etch: There vm claims to have sent out the mail by
naming a buffer "sent mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED]" (or whereever you
planned to send that mail). On the other hand, this means that you
have less serious data loss on Etch. :-)

Same with M-x mail and big mails. You even don't get any hint in the
*Messages* buffer.

To check that postfix did not only log the message to the error log, I
tried to send out a similar mail using /usr/sbin/sendmail directly (on
Sarge):

$ /usr/sbin/sendmail [EMAIL PROTECTED] < 20-MB-Test-Mail.txt
postdrop: warning: uid=4977: File too large
sendmail: fatal: xtaran(4977): Message file too big
$ echo $?
69
$

On Etch /usr/sbin/sendmail returns with exit code 75.

I have looked through the vm variables and functions but haven't found
any which configures how to care about sendmail's return values or
messages (as e.g. mutt does).

A workaround is to use SMTP instead of /usr/sbin/sendmail. Then you
get at least an "SMTP protocol error", although you still get no hint,
what exactly went wrong. For using this workaround, add

(custom-set-variables
 '(send-mail-function (quote smtpmail-send-it))
; change this to your favourite server -- only needed if $SMTPSERVER is not
set.
 '(smtpmail-smtp-server "mail.example.com"))
(custom-set-faces)

to the end of your ~/.emacs file.

Bug#403930: More details on this issue

2006-12-20 Thread Axel Beckert
retitle 403930 xemacs21-basesupport: smtpmail silently drops mails if
/usr/bin/sendmail rejects them
thanks

While trying to find a workaround for this problem I discovered some
more details:

Not vm but smtpmail.el(c) seems to be the core of the problem since
you get a (though not very meaningful) error message if you switch
smtpmail over to use SMTP instead of the default
/usr/sbin/sendmail. But at least you get an error message and the mail
stays unsent in its buffer.

The same also happens with M-x mail if the mail gets too big.

The same bug can also be found in smtpmail for GNU Emacs 21 from the
emacs21-common package, see http://bugs.debian.org/403953 for details.

A workaround is to use SMTP instead of /usr/sbin/sendmail. Then you
get at least an "SMTP protocol error", although you still get no hint,
what exactly went wrong. For using this workaround, add

(custom-set-variables
 '(send-mail-function (quote smtpmail-send-it))
; change this to your favourite server -- only needed if $SMTPSERVER is not
set.
 '(smtpmail-smtp-server "mail.example.com"))
(custom-set-faces)

to the end of your ~/.xemacs/custom.el file.

Hi,

the version this error initially has been found in is also the version
in Sarge and there the error still occurs.

It would be nice, if this error could be fixed in Sarge, too, since it
breaks our backup here every then and when. And until then (or the
release of Etch), I'm forced to change back to using the ancient
rsh-server instead of rsh-server-redone.

Bug#407571: wget: [CVE-2006-6719] segfaults on too many FTP 220 responses at once

2007-01-19 Thread Axel Beckert
Package: wget
Version: 1.9.1-12, 1.10.2-2
Severity: normal

I was able to reproduce the CVE-2006-6719 (DoS from malicious FTP
server against wget <= 1.10.2 by letting it segfault, see
http://cve.mitre.org/cgi-bin/cvename.cgi?name=CVE-2006-6719) with wget
versions in Sarge, Etch and Sid (Etch and Sid are the same at the
moment of writing).

How to reproduce:

Download the proof of concept perl script from
http://www.milw0rm.com/exploits/2947 then log in as root and start the
script as root (it's easy to understand and harmless, well, except to
wget... ;-). You'll also find a backtrace in the comments at the
beginning of the script.

The login as a user, and start:

  wget --passive-ftp ftp://localhost/bla/fasel

It will segfault.

It's not yet known if this segfault can be exploited to execute some
code with the rights of the wget user (possibly root), so I set the
severity to normal only...

Hi,

after a short chat with David Schweikert (upstream author), I patched
my mailgraph.cgi from Debian Testing respective Unstable to fix this
problem. David told me, he'll incorporate the patch, too, so it should
be fixed in one of the next upstream releases of mailgraph.

Would be fine, if this could be included in Etch, though.

Attached the patch. (It just moves the configuration for the reject
line to the end of the bad mails graph configuration.)

Hello,

this bug should definitely be fixed in the Etch-release because it makes
working with OpenOffice.org very hard when the fonts are blurry.

Debian is released as a whole distribution and I think that's why the
packages should link to the correct libraries.

Bug#411226: iceweasel: The button "help"-button and the "release notes" leads to "File Not Found"

2007-02-17 Thread Axel Reimer
Package: iceweasel

Severity: minor

If you start iceweasel and press "help"-->"release notes"
(Hilfe-->Versionshinweise in German) iceweasel
opens a webpage from mozilla.org which displays "File Not Found".

Solution:
Iceweasel should link to the correct webpage or the menuoption "release
notes" should be removed, since it would normally link to the firefox
release notes which is also not 100% correct.
Another solution is to link to the debian package information of
iceweasel.

Bug#405628: RFP: cone -- COnsole Newsreader and Emailer (a GPL'ed pine clone)

2007-01-04 Thread Axel Beckert
Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist

* Package name: cone
  Version : 0.69
  Upstream Author : Mr. Sam <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
* URL or Web page : http://www.courier-mta.org/cone/
* License : GPL
Description : COnsole Newsreader and Emailer (a GPL'ed pine clone)

According to http://www.linux.com/article.pl?sid=06/11/28/1519247 cone
is modeled after the well-known but not-so-free MUA pine and therefore
could fit into Debian as a GPL'ed pine replacement. According to its
web page it shares a lot of libraries with the Courier MTA and is
written by the same people. It's pico-clone is named leaf (Lightweight
Editor of Ascii Files).

Beyond others cone has support for PGP, GPG, UTF-8, IMAP, POP3,
incoming HTML mails, external viewers, NNTP, SOCKS 5, SSL/TLS, SASL,
LDAP and IMAP based address books, remote storable configuration,
multiple accounts (can't remember having seen that in pine), tagging
mails with several different flags, and SMAP (Simple Mail Access
Protocol, a new IMAP and POP3 replacement developed by the Courier
guys and supported by the Courier developement versions).

Cone compiles smoothly on Sarge with just "sh configure && make". It
looks like pine with some of the known enhancement patches (e.g. it's
more colorful, but still not too colorful :-) and works quite
intuitively, IMHO even more than pine does. The only thing missing on
a first glance is the capability of mutt or pine to connect to an IMAP
server by tunneling IMAP over SSH. :-)

I really wonder why it isn't in Debian yet, since the Courier MTA
seems to be well-elaborated in Debian (at least according to the
number of packages it has been split into ;-).

Kind regards, Axel

Yes. Never noticed any terminal breaking Ctrl-based keybindings
(except C-? and C-d aka Delete and Backspace and sometimes C-h :-) --
and Ctrl-based keybindings are ASCII...

Hey, they work fine! Thanks! (Although I wouldn't have expected such
keybindings for Page Up/Down as an Emacsian. :-)

Yeah, you're right there. Notice that always with Emacs over some
ssh/screen/etc. connections. You either have to prepend all umlauts
with C-q or Delete-Word (M-d aka "ä") doesn't work and needs to be
typed as "Esc d".

You're right, C-f and C-b are not documented in the quick-help of
Sid's version of aptitude.

I retitled this bug report so that it's clear that this fact is the
real bug. :-)

Bug#406584: nawm: Example URL in man page gives a 403 error

2007-01-11 Thread Axel Beckert
Package: nawm
Version: 0.0.20030130-2.2
Severity: minor

In the man page of nawm there is an URL with examples mentioned:

  http://www.mit.edu/~nawm/samples/

This leads to a 403 permission denied. The URL

  http://web.mit.edu/~nawm/samples/

seems to offer the same content, but with directory listings
allowed. I suggest to change the examples URL in the man page to this
URL.

TIA.

2007-01-12 Thread Axel Beckert
Package: balazar

I just remotely looked through the games in Debian on my new Etch box

Retried the same on my Sid box remotely. There happens the same. (The
package version is also the same.)

Looks as if the game needs OpenGL or so, which is neither available on
the box $DISPLAY is set to nor would it AFAIK work remotely, but it
just shouldn't segfault.

Bug#402360: aptitude: ASCII-keybindings for page up/down

2006-12-09 Thread Axel Beckert
Package: aptitude
Version: 0.4.4-1
Severity: wishlist

Hi,

it would be nice to have some ASCII key-bindings for scrolling up and
dow page-wise if the PageUp / PageDown keys don't work because of the
terminal or something in between doesn't support them.

I would suggest Space and Backspace or perhaps also emacs-like Ctrl-V
and Meta-V respecitively Esc-V.

(If there are such keybindings, it would be good to have them
documented in the help popping up with "?" nowadays.)

TIA.

Gaia has risen from the ashes with free NASA Worldwind imagery:

Gürkan already built new packages for a first impression, available at

It's much slower and the images are not as detailed as before
unfortunately. But it's a (new) start.

Bug#408852: Here is a translation-patch for bug #408852 in Debian gnome-power-manager based on ubuntus gnome-power-manager

thanks

Hello again,

I created a new patch for this translation problem. This patch is based
on the Ubuntu translations for gnome-power-manager. This is the patch
that should be used for solving this problem.

To the package maintainer:
You just have to copy this file to the gnome-power-managers po-directory
and type "patch < de.po.patch".

This patch should be applied before Etch is released.

Best regards,

Axel Reimer

Ok, so the original submitted RDF is indeed broken and no valid XML?

2006-11-11 Thread Axel Beckert
Package: caca-utils
Version: 0.99.beta9.debian2-2
Severity: wishlist

cacafire & cacademo can be closed by pressing Escape, if the system
isn't under load. Under load I experienced no reaction of cacafire
after pressing Escape. Had to kill it from another shell with "killall
cacafire" since neither pressing Ctrl-C nor pressing Ctrl-Z stopped
the program.

Both programs should also exit if Ctrl-C is pressed, preferable via
the INT signal. But this seems to be disabled. (In the case of a
SIGINT, it should be ok to leave the terminal in an unclean state, so
this should be no reason for disabling Ctrl-C or Ctrl-Z.)

Bug#398616: libxml-twig-perl: Please install examples as scripts into /usr/bin

2006-11-14 Thread Axel Beckert
Package: libxml-twig-perl
Version: 1:3.26-1
Severity: wishlist

Hi,

there are very useful programs hidden in
/usr/share/doc/libxml-twig-perl/examples/. Please consider installing
them as scripts in /usr/bin/. Especially xml_grep seems of great use.

Maybe it's useful to make a seperate package for them, perhaps
xmltwig, xml-twig, xml-twig-bin or so. And mention their names in the
description, because we ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) didn't find libxml-twig-perl
using

apt-cache search xml.\*grep

as one would expect, but by searching for "xml grep" at Google,
finding the XML::Twig home page and then noticing that XML::Twig is
already packaged. :-)

Bug#345905: Proposed update kazehakase 0.2.7-2.sarge2 works fine here

2006-07-30 Thread Axel Beckert
Hi!

The proposed update kazehakase 0.2.7-2.sarge2 works fine here,
especially in comparison to 0.2.7-2.sarge1. All the segfaults regarding
new windows and loading pages in there at the same time are gone. Hope
to see it soon in the official archives.

Thanks for the update.

Bug#391582: eog: exits without any appropriate error message or exit code if image is not accessible

2006-10-07 Thread Axel Beckert
Subject: eog: exits without any appropriate error message or exit code if image
is not accessible
Package: eog
Version: 2.14.3-1
Severity: normal

*** Please type your report below this line ***

If you start eog with an image file name on the command line and the image is
unaccessible for eog e.g. because
belonging to another user and having rights set to 600 (as it's the case with
screenshots made during the graphical
install and you want wo view them afterwards with your freshly created normal
user), it exits with exit code zero and
without any error message.

The same happens if you select such a file from the open dialog and try to open
it: eog exits and gives not any hint
why it did that nor what caused the exit. Besides that: If you try to open an
unreadable file via the open dialog,
the program should not exit completely but instead return to the open dialog
and showing an appropriate error
message.

In this state, eog should in no case in the Debian default installation since
it does not interact with the user
appropriately.

When I started kazehakase for the first time on this installation, I
configured it a little bit and entered an URL
(http://bugs.debian.org/287108) and it crashed with following message on
the console:

there is no reason why it shouldn't make it into Etch. There is no

Bug#391825: More info: Bug#391825: Acknowledgement (slash fails to install: DBD::mysql::db do failed: Invalid default value for 'sid' at /usr/bin/install-slashsite line 358)

2006-10-09 Thread Axel Beckert
Hi!

The problem is located at /usr/share/slash/sql/mysql/schema.sql --
there is a create statement which is a little bit strange:

CREATE TABLE moderatorlog (
id int UNSIGNED NOT NULL auto_increment,
uid mediumint UNSIGNED NOT NULL,
val tinyint DEFAULT '0' NOT NULL,
sid mediumint UNSIGNED DEFAULT '' NOT NULL,
^ ^^^
ts datetime DEFAULT '-00-00 00:00:00' NOT NULL,
cid mediumint UNSIGNED NOT NULL,
cuid mediumint UNSIGNED NOT NULL,
reason tinyint UNSIGNED DEFAULT '0',
active tinyint DEFAULT '1' NOT NULL,
m2count mediumint UNSIGNED DEFAULT '0' NOT NULL,
PRIMARY KEY (id),
KEY sid (sid,cid),
KEY sid_2 (sid,uid,cid),
KEY cid (cid)
) TYPE = myisam;

I'm not sure, if we just can set the default to 0 or if it's better to
remove the "NOT NULL" and make "NULL" the default. But an int which
defaults to the empty string is a strange idea of numbers. ;-)

I'll test it.

Regards, Axel

Defaulting sid to 0 seems to work fine. Installation then works, too.

Bug#429071: please update/request removal of your package

The problem is well known, but unfortunately not trivial.

Slash out of the box doesn't work with 2.x Apaches. Slashdot itself
still runs Apache 1.3. See also this discussion at
http://sourceforge.net/mailarchive/forum.php?thread_name=1180528679.21189.1192504357%40webmail.messagingengine.com&forum_name=slashcode-general

But there is an inofficial patch for the current "stable" version
2.2.6 from 2004 (see
http://www.slashcode.com/articles/04/02/19/2144259.shtml and
http://www.crackerjack.net/slash-2.2.6-modperl2.diff.txt) for Apache
2.0.

Since I plan to evaluate that patch for the Slashsite I run, I also
already planned to try to update the package to work with Apache 2.x.
No promises, but at least a personal urge to get that damned thing
working with Apache 2.x. :-)

Much more speculative is though if the current developement version
can be made run with Apache 2.x. (But as long as it's brandmarked
"stable" it should be ok for Debian Stable, shouldn't it? :-)

It's a little bit like reinventing the wheel, but in general it should
be possible since CGI.pm doesn't modify @ARGV.

So it also shouldn't interfere with blosxoms other commandline options
using param(). But I haven't tested that yet.

Another possibility to fix this would be the following:

Instead of

  for $rcfile ("/etc/blosxom/blosxom.conf", "/etc/blosxom.conf", param("-f")) {

write:

  my $conffile;
  $conffile = param('-f') unless $ENV{GATEWAY_INTERFACE};
  for $rcfile ("/etc/blosxom/blosxom.conf", "/etc/blosxom.conf",
$ENV{BLOSXOM_CONFIG_FILE}, $conffile) {

So -f only gets used outside a webserver.

Drawback: Only works if the server sets that environement variable.
According to the specification[1] it must do that ("The following
environment variables [...] are set for all requests"), but I'm not
sure if really every HTTP daemon with claimed CGI support does that.

  [1] http://hoohoo.ncsa.uiuc.edu/cgi/env.html

More CGI necessary environement variables could be added, but the more
you add, the more could be set on the command line manually so that
the -f feature doesn't work anymore on the command line either.

Package: exim4
Version: 4.63-17

Hello community,

I have the below described behaviour on my Debian testing
installation.
I use the exim4 mail packet with the clamd virus scanner,
spam assassin and fetchmail.
After booting I get the following messages in
file /var/log/exim4/paniclog:

But
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ ls -l /var/run/clamav/clamd.ctl
srwxrwxrwx 1 clamav clamav 0 2007-05-26 13:34 /var/run/clamav/clamd.ctl

shows, that the missing socket exists. I can receive and transmit mails.
This behaviour began, without any modifying of configuration after a
update
made by synaptic.
I have modified the clamd start script, so that after starting the
script
waits until the socket exists. But the same behaviour as before.
I hope, the error is not the user.

Please can you explain me, what do you mean with
"connect to the daemon from a shell"
But I think, that will be working, because mail sent and transmit
after booting works too.
The error message in /var/log/exim4/paniclog only appears after
system start, when the first mails should be fetched by fetchmail.
The appropriate messages in /var/log/exim4/mainlog are:

The rejected mails will be received at the next trial.
And after this, it seems to be worked correct.

# Abandon queue run if load gets above this level (if unset, use the above)

Unfortunately unsuccessfull, the error messages in /etc/exim4/paniclog still

I need to pin the default distribution to "sarge" (per apt.conf),

This gets obviously ignored, so I'm stuck with a not really maintainable
solution.

This is my first usage of reportbug, so i hope i'm not misusing this.

Bug#394566: ITP: conkeror -- completely keyboard driven Gecko based web browser

2006-10-21 Thread Axel Beckert
Package: wnpp
Owner: Axel Beckert <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Severity: wishlist

* Package name: conkeror
  Version : 0.34
  Upstream Author : Shawn Betts <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
* URL : http://conkeror.mozdev.org/
* License : MPL or OSI-approved[1]
  Programming Lang: JavaScript, XUL
Description : completely keyboard driven Gecko based web browser

Conkeror is a Gecko based and completely keyboard driven web browser
implemented as Firefox extension[2]. It has no toolbars or buttons and
its keybindings are modeled after Emacs, but it also offers optional
vi-like keybindings.

Notes:

[1] Exact license still unclear since it's not mentioned on the
website and I have no feedback neither from the #conkeror
IRC-channel nor mailinglist yet. I've also skimmed through the
source code and haven't found anything, but since the mozdev.org
policy for hosted projects only allows projects under MPL or an
OSI-approved license, it should not give any bad surpises
  here. :-)

[2] It's implemented and installed as a Firefox extension, but using
a wrapper script loading the appropriate chrome files, it should
be able to install it as it would be a standalone browser (using
all the Firefox preferences, though). Additionally, any user can
choose to start conkeror instead of firefox when firefox is
called. But I don't want to implement this as default. It also
seems to really need firefox and not only xulrunner.

Yeah, I already wondered about the really misleading name. But I just
hadn't a better idea for a package name and so have chosen the
straight one.

But you're right, I should better name it "firefox-conkeror" (since
all the mozilla-firefox-* packages seemed to have been renamed to
firefox-*).

Well, yes, you're right about the Mozilla Foundation.

But Conkeror is no Mozilla Foundation project, it's just a Firefox
extenstion with a strange name and hosted at some site, which also
seems to have no affiliation with the Mozilla Foundation. It's rather
it's own foundation, see http://www.mozdev.org/about.html as we

Bug#396728: openbsd-inetd: Priority change in Sarge breaks inetd-based services during installation

2006-11-02 Thread Axel Beckert
Package: openbsd-inetd
Severity: critical
Justification: breaks unrelated software

The recent priority exchange of openbsd-inetd (extra in 3.1r3,
important in 3.1r4) and netkit-inetd (vice versa) was said to have
happened only in Etch/Sid, but in fact it did also happen in Sarge and
there it breaks the inetd services installation during base-config.

Cause of this are two independent things:

a) openbsd-inetd refuses to start (or better said stops) if there are
no inetd services configured at the time, it is started.

b) If any inetd based services (e.g. pidentd) are installed afterwards
and use /usr/sbin/update-inetd from the package netbase (see
below), that services won't start up, since /usr/sbin/update-inetd
only killhups inetd, which doesn't do anything, since there is no
inetd running anymore (in comparsion to netkit-inetd's behaviour).

In our environment (Department of Physics, ETH Zurich, more than 150
automatically installed Debian Sarge workstations) this breaks the
whole installation, since we use base-config's preseeding to fetch
further configuration and packages from a web-server, which needs to
check if root or some other user is trying to download them. For
enforcing root-only downloads we are using ident requests.

Without inetd and therefore without identd this fails and so the whole
automatic installation fails -- since Sarge 3.1r4. A manual reboot
would restart base-config and since then inetd.conf contains services,
openbsd-inetd would start up and the installation would resume.

(Credits for finding out the real reason behind the breakage go to
Neil Franklin (http://neil.franklin.ch/), with additional work by
Gürkan Sengün (http://www.linuks.mine.nu/).)

Besides that, it's not very useful to let base-config install
netkit-inetd just to remove it when tasksel installs all important
packages:

---snip---
The following NEW packages will be automatically installed:
  g++-3.3 gcc-3.4-base libstdc++5-3.3-dev

Bug#354502: Adopting the package

2006-11-03 Thread Axel Beckert
retitle 354502 ITA: wap-wml-tools -- Wireless Markup Language development and
test tools
thanks

Upstream has neglected this software, removed the software's homepage
and does not answer any mail regarding this software. I plan to host a
mirror of the rescued parts of the (luckily only one page) upstream
home page and old upstream versions.

I'll also try to fix any security, build, docs or compatibility
related bugs, but can't promise to fix all feature-like bugs (like the
one still being open -- although I'll have a look, if can fix that
though)...

Unfortunately without the original author answering to mails, I can't
do anything about the package having an non-free license (because of
including a non-commercial clause).

Bug#209753: Patch + Pending (Bug #209753)

Hmmm, I remember doing the patch during Zurich BSP, but if that hasn't
been uploaded yet, I would have to patch it again, since the boxes we
had there were reinstalled after the BSP. Maybe madduck still has the
patch as he was the one who should IIRC sponsor it.

> Do you still intend to NMU relay-ctrl?

Well, it just was a new description and would enhance the package. It
was one of these easy-to-do NMUs on packages I never used at the top
of the oldest bugs list. :)

That's sad to hear, but I guess in that case I don't need to do the
patch again, since I won't adopt the package because I don't use it.
:-(

Bug#308113: Reassigning the bug to libxml2

2006-11-05 Thread Axel Beckert
reassign 308113 libxml2
thanks

Hi,

I'm reassigning this bug to libxml2 since the error seems to happen
during the XML syntax verification which is not done by rdfwml but by
libxml2.

You can reproduce the same error with the tool xmllint from the
package libxml2-utils (source package libxml2) by calling it like this
on the file attached to the bug-report:

$ xmllint broken2.rdf

P.S.: This problem seems also to happen with libxml1 since

$ xml2 < broken2.rdf

from the libxml1 dependent package xml2 (sic!) also reports this
error.

Is the RDF file valid XML or is it a bug in libxml? I can't tell.

Regards, Axel

Bug#329666: mutt: imap folder changing leads to segfault

2007-08-14 Thread Axel Beckert
tags 329666 + etch
found 329666 1.5.13-1.1
thanks

Hi, just a little bit of additional information about this bug:

I noticed that this segfault does not happen on all architectures. On
Etch i386 (1.5.13-1.1) it segfaults, but on Etch amd64 (1.5.13-1.1) it
does not segfault.

I have been told that the segfault seems to be fixed in mutt 1.5.16 or
so, so I would be happy if the fix could be backported to 1.5.13 in
Etch so that this bug could be fixed with the next maintenance release
of Etch.

Bug#433375: nvclock: segfaults if $HOME is not set

2007-07-16 Thread Axel Beckert
Package: nvclock
Version: 0.8b2-1
Severity: important
Tags: patch, etch

If nvclock is used inside an environment where no $HOME is set, it
segfaults. This can be the case e.g. inside a script which exports
the GPU temperature via inetd and tcpd -- that's how we noticed it.

How to repeat:

$ env -i nvclock -T
$ env -i HOME=/tmp/ nvclock -T

Since nvclock just needs $HOME for creating a config file if it
doesn't exist, it can work fine without config file at all. So here's
a patch which ignores config files at all if $HOME isn't set and
therefore prevents this segfault:

Bug#444435: openssl: [CVE-2007-5135] Off-by-one error in the SSL_get_shared_ciphers()

2007-09-28 Thread Axel Beckert
Package: openssl
Version: 0.9.8c-4, 0.9.7e-3sarge4
Severity: critical
Tags: sarge, etch, security

According to http://nvd.nist.gov/nvd.cfm?cvename=CVE-2007-5135
(http://cve.mitre.org/cgi-bin/cvename.cgi?name=CVE-2007-5135 is not
yet available):

Off-by-one error in the SSL_get_shared_ciphers function in OpenSSL
0.9.7l and 0.9.8d might allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary
code via a crafted packet that triggers a one-byte buffer underflow.

According to the German IT news magazin "Heise Online", 0.9.7m and
0.9.8e are also affected:
http://www.heise.de/security/news/meldung/96710

Original source seems to be this Bugtraq posting:
http://www.securityfocus.com/archive/1/archive/1/480855/100/0/threaded

According to this posting, all lower versions are affected, too.

The release dates of 0.9.8e and 0.9.7m and the time line in the above
mentioned Bugtraq posting suggest that not only 0.9.7l and 0.9.8d but
also 0.9.7m and 0.9.8e are affected -- as Heise wrote.

Bug#408852: gnome-power-manager: Translations are in the .po-file but are not used

2007-01-29 Thread Axel Reimer
Package: gnome-power-manager
Version: 2.14.3-3+b1
Followup-For: Bug #408852

I just downloaded the source via "apt-get sources gnome-power-manager".
I had a look at the de.po file and found nearly all the missing german
translations there.
Here are the ones which are missing, but are fully translated in the
de.po-file:
msgid "Put _display to sleep when computer is inactive for:"
msgstr "_Bildschirm in den Ruhemodus versetzen nach:"

msgid "Put computer to _sleep when it is inactive for:"
msgstr "_Rechner in den Ruhemodus versetzen nach:"

msgid "Only display when battery _present"
msgstr "Nur anzeigen, wenn Batteriestrom _kritisch wird:"

One translation is really missing. It is:
msgid "Sleep _type when inactive:"
msgstr ""

This should be (in my opinion):
msgid "Sleep _type when inactive:"
msgstr "Energiesparverhalten bei Inaktivität"

I recognised this translation bug in the Debian distribution only. So I
think this is not a gnomebug - almost all the translations are there but
are not used.

I made a screenshot of the gnome-power-manager showing the missing
translation sentences:

http://www.FPGAs.de/energie2.png

Axel

thanks

I just added the missing translation for the german gnome-power-manager
package.

I attached the file de.po.patch which patches de_orig.po (de.po) which
had several translation bugs.

Since I am a native speaker (German) it was easy for me to translate
these few sentences.

Bug#409950: iceweasel-gnome-support: Confusing package description claims being an "extension"

2007-02-06 Thread Axel Beckert
Package: iceweasel-gnome-support
Version: 2.0.0.1+dfsg-2
Severity: minor

The description of iceweasel-gnome-support claims that it is an
extension, but in the context of Firefox, extentions are something
that can be installed by downloading some XPI archive and even if
you're only a normal user.

GNOME support does not seem to fall into either category, and also
installs files into /usr/lib/iceweasel/components/ and not into
/usr/lib/iceweasel/extension/.

So please clarify the confusing description of the package, e.g. by
replacing the word "extension" by "component" or "optional component".

2006-11-18 Thread Axel Dürrbaum
Package: frozen-bubble

When starting frozen-bubble I get the following error message:

Thew directory "shoot" does not exist in

"shooter.png" is there.

Purging the packages frozen-bubble and frozen-bubble-data doesn't
solve the problem.

Same problem did exist for version 2.0.0-1.

When first time starting iceweasel after the upgrade from firefox, a

since this is the first thing someone sees from iceweasel, it should

Bug#399845: tar: directory traversal by letting tar create apropriate symlinks

2006-11-22 Thread Axel Beckert
Package: tar
Version: 1.16-1
Severity: critical
Tags: sarge, sid, upstream, security

There is a directory traversal bug in GNU tar as described in
http://lists.grok.org.uk/pipermail/full-disclosure/2006-November/050812.html
which means the creation and overwriting of files outside the expected
directory without using -P.

I could reproduce this security flaw in Sarge (tar 1.14-2.2) as well
in Sid (tar 1.16-1), so it probably is also in the version in Etch.

  Description : Google Earth client

Gaia is both a free library and free client to Google Earth for Linux,

It was developed by reverse-engineering the Google Earth protocol and
is based on many well-known open source components including OpenGL,

The author is neither named on the gaia website, in the file COPYING

Happened on bug #400070: http://bugs.debian.org/400070

I opened this bug as RFP. Someone who intends to package the software
changed owner and title of the bug appropriately making it an ITP bug.
But I didn't get any notice about this quite important event for an
RFP bug. Checked the whole procmail-log. No mails on #400070 from
bugs.debian.org except the two initial acknowledgement mails, also not
for the two additional comments sent to that bug.

Bug#364261: apache2-common: Too many exclamation marks in apache2-ssl-certificate

2006-04-22 Thread Axel Beckert
Package: apache2-common
Version: 2.0.54-5
Severity: minor

Quote from the output of apache2-ssl-certificate:

---8<---
server name (eg. ssl.domain.tld; required!!!) []:

Quote from "Eric", a Terry Pratchett book: "'Multiple exclamation marks,'
he went on, shaking his head, 'are a sure sign of a diseased mind.'"

Please remove at least two, better all of the above cited exclamation
marks. No real person takes someone seriously who uses three exclamation
marks in a row.

Bug#365223: dillo hangs at start after 2x saving default options

2006-04-28 Thread Axel Beckert
Package: dillo
Version: 0.8.5-2
Severity: important

When saving its options, dillo writes an dillorc file into $HOME/.dillo.
I changed a few settings, saved them, changed a few more settings, saved
them again, and dillo hangs while starting up.

After the first save, it writes into dillorc "geometry=0x0", after the
second time, it writes "geometry=1x1" into it, causing the following
error message and hangig at startup:

Gtk-WARNING **: gtk_widget_size_allocate(): attempt to allocate widget with
width 65527 and height 30

How to reproduce: Just start dillo, save the default options, exit,
start again, save again, exit again and start it a third time.

P.S. to Guerkan: Happened on snitch. ;-)
