Bug#340657: /usr/src/linux information in Sarge release notes
Package: Release Notes for Debian GNU/Linux 3.1 (`sarge') The following information/patch is desirable under 5.2 Upgrading to a 2.6 kernel: If for any reason you are using software that refers to /usr/src/linux, note that is likely to contain out of date files or links to the previous version of the kernel after upgrading. Normally Debian packages do not use /usr/src/linux. If it is still needed you can probably delete the old folder (or rename it to, e.g. /usr/src/oldlinux just for safety) and then replace it with a symlink to the new kernel source, e.g. cd /usr/src/ ln -s kernel-source-2.6.8 linux -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Bug#408464: gnome-volume-manager: UDF CDs are mounted as iso9660
I have been having the same problem. I have managed to get my system to mount UDF CDs, sort of, after some considerable research and configuration - which most users will not have the time or knowledge to do. In order to mount UDF CDs the package udftools needs to be installed and configured. Then the system needs to mount /dev/pktcdvd/0. So I think what this issue amounts to is that udftools should be installed as a dependency for gnome-volume-manager with the appropriate configurations so that gnome-volume-manager sorts out which file system is on the disc and automounts the appropriate one. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Bug#752701: initramfs-tools: Does not load firmware for in kernel wireless drivers
Wed, 25 Jun 2014 22:43:56 +0200 maximilian attems wrote: > We don'T support NFS over wireless there would be no other reason > to put it there Another reason is that if wireless firmware is not loaded in the initramfs then it does not get loaded at all. This is a general problem that I have had now with three different wireless drivers. The problem is that the built in wireless driver starts working before the disk file systems have been mounted, and hence the firmware is not available. It is a bug, not a matter of a user setting. Whether the solution adopted lies with the initramfs or somewhere else is something for developers to decide. Bug#748917: [Pkg-xfce-devel] Bug#748917: lightdm: fails to register a logind session
I seem to have found out the cause of this which is to do with the migration to the systemd init system. I had updated all the packages to the latest versions in Jessie and everything seemed to be working apart from no logind session being registered. However, I compile my own kernels and the kernel I was using was not set up for systemd init to function fully. I recompiled a kernel in accordance with the systemd readme file and now everything is working, so the bug can be closed. Thank you both for your help. Bug#644957: libreoffice-base: Base runs extremely slowly
Package: libreoffice-base Version: 1:3.4.3-3 Severity: grave Justification: renders package unusable I have reported this issue against openjdk-6-jre, http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=641537 . However the problem is even worse in LibreOffice 3.4.3-3 using openjdk-7-jre. It has been reported upstream as https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=35023 and marked not their problem on the basis that base works OK with earlier versions of Java. However, until it can be identified what the change is in Java that has affected base it cannot be clear whether it is LibreOffice or a Java problem. -- System Information: Debian Release: wheezy/sid APT prefers testing APT policy: (500, 'testing') Architecture: i386 (i686) Kernel: Linux 2.6.39-20110627 (SMP w/2 CPU cores) Locale: LANG=en_GB.utf8, LC_CTYPE=en_GB.utf8 (charmap=UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Versions of packages libreoffice-base depends on: ii base-files 6.5 ii default-jre [java5-runtime]1:1.6-40 ii libc6 2.13-21 ii libgcc11:4.6.1-4 ii libhsqldb-java 1.8.0.10-10 ii libreoffice-base-core 1:3.4.3-3 ii libreoffice-core 1:3.4.3-3 ii libreoffice-java-common1:3.4.3-3 ii libstdc++6 4.6.1-4 ii openjdk-6-jre [java5-runtime] 6b23~pre7-1 ii openjdk-7-jre [java5-runtime] 7~b147-2.0~pre4-1 ii ure3.4.3-3 libreoffice-base recommends no packages. Bug#644957: libreoffice-base: Base runs extremely slowly
Hi René I marked the bug as grave for LibreOffice-base (not LibreOffice) because base runs so slowly with openjdk-7-jre that it is unusable. It is not a grave bug for openjdk-7-jre because it can be used for other things. The question seems to be, how can this bug be resolved, whichever package is responsible. It seems to me that at present http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=641537 has insufficient information. I appreciate that many people feel that Java is inherently too slow, but it appears, according to https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=35023 that base still runs OK on earlier versions of openjdk. So which of the changes to openjdk have slowed base down? When we know this we should be in a position to say what the bug is in openjdk or whether some change needs to be made in base to accommodate some intended change in Java. Bug#717194: Not gsd?
Hmm, I don't think this is a gnome-settings-daemon problem as I do not have it installed, I am using xfce. When I try to run evince (evince-gtk) it segfaults with the same messages as above. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Bug#659720: Reproducibility
Hi Rene I have created a document and posted it upstream as requested. I cannot open it with 3.4.5-2, so if you can then there must be something different between your set up and mine (above). Bug#675491: module-cork-music-on-phone is a problem
I have also been having a problem with PulseAudio not starting after a recent upgrade. I tried cleaning up the ~/.pulse folder but it did not help. However, default.pa was causing PulseAudio to attempt to load module-cork-music-on-phone, which no longer exists. Changing the line in $HOME/.pulse/default.pa from load-module module-cork-music-on-phone to load-module module-role-cork solved the problem. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of "unsubscribe". Bug#646018: network-manager-gnome: forgets wireless key if a connection is lost
Package: network-manager-gnome Version: 0.9.0-2 Severity: normal The wireless driver keeps dropping the network connection (nothing to do with this bug). When the network manager applet tries to re-establish the connection, a pop-up window appears asking for the key. The first time this happens the existing key is offered. If the connection still fails the next time the pop-up window appears the key has been deleted. If I click "Cancel" in the pop-up window the first and each subsequent time, and then click on the network manager applet in the panel, I can select my network and re-connect (maybe after several goes) without being prompted for a key. -- System Information: Debian Release: wheezy/sid APT prefers testing APT policy: (500, 'testing') Architecture: amd64 (x86_64) Kernel: Linux 2.6.39-20110622 (SMP w/2 CPU cores) Locale: LANG=en_GB.utf8, LC_CTYPE=en_GB.utf8 (charmap=UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/dash Versions of packages network-manager-gnome depends on: ii dbus-x11 1.4.16-1 ii gconf2 2.32.4-1 ii gnome-icon-theme 3.2.0-1 ii libatk1.0-0 2.2.0-2 ii libc62.13-21 ii libcairo21.10.2-6.1 ii libdbus-1-3 1.4.16-1 ii libdbus-glib-1-2 0.98-1 ii libfontconfig1 2.8.0-3 ii libfreetype6 2.4.6-2 ii libgconf2-4 2.32.4-1 ii libgdk-pixbuf2.0-0 2.24.0-1 ii libglib2.0-0 2.28.6-1 ii libgnome-bluetooth7 2.30.0-3 ii libgnome-keyring03.2.0-2 ii libgtk2.0-0 2.24.6-2 ii libnm-glib-vpn1 0.9.0-2 ii libnm-glib4 0.9.0-2 ii libnm-util2 0.9.0-2 ii libnotify4 0.7.4-1 ii libpango1.0-01.29.4-1 ii network-manager 0.9.0-2 ii policykit-1-gnome0.102-2 Versions of packages network-manager-gnome recommends: ii gnome-bluetooth2.30.0-3 ii libpam-gnome-keyring [libpam-keyring] 3.0.3-2 ii mobile-broadband-provider-info 20110806-1 ii notification-daemon0.7.2-1 Versions of packages network-manager-gnome suggests: pn network-manager-openvpn-gnome pn network-manager-pptp-gnome pn network-manager-vpnc-gnome -- no debconf information -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of "unsubscribe". Bug#807600: initramfs-tools: LVM called before encrypted partition is mounted causing boot to hang
Package: initramfs-tools Version: 0.120 Severity: important Dear Maintainer, * What led up to the situation? I compiled a static kernel from the latest source in Debian Testing, 4.2.6. I have successfully compiled kernels many times before. I have a boot partition and the rest of the hard disk is in an encrypted partition. When I come to boot it fails to ask for the password and starts getting the following lines being repeated on the console: /run/lvm/lvmetad.socket: connect failed: No such file or directory WARNING: Failed to connect to lvmetad. Falling back to internal scanning. Reading all physical volumes. This may take a while... In addition a previous kernel that I had been using also fails to boot. On the other hand the latest stock modular kernel boots OK. I am attaching a dmesg which I was able to obtain from a boot failure. The lvmetad lines do not appear in dmesg. Bug#785265: Segfault
I am getting this problem as well. I had two computers one of which was working after the recent set of updates in stretch and the other was crashing. I decided to check on differences in the installations and on the computer that was working I had all the xserver video packages installed and on the other I only had the package for the (Intel) graphics card in use. I deleted the extra packages from the working computer and it now crashes. I reinstalled all the deleted packages and it still crashes. The one thing I could not reinstall were the modesetting configuration files which I had purged. I would provide a gdb trace but I am hitting some problems. I am using lightdm and xfce so the instructions for getting a core file at http://x.debian.net/howto/use-gdb.html do not help. What should I set on my system? Also I do not have a file /etc/X11/core for # gdb -c /etc/X11/core /usr/bin/Xorg. Bug#785265: xserver-xorg was not installed
In my case I had uninstalled xserver-xorg after the recent update, possibly because the description: "This package depends on the full suite of the server and drivers for the X.Org X server. It does not provide the actual server itself." suggested it was not required. Clearly it is. Reinstalled it and everything is working. Hello John, How are you going on with this issue? When you say "Firefox" we expect you mean "any browser". What do you mean by "generic printer"? What does 'netstat -tulpan | grep 631' give you? Regards, Brian. Hello Brian Sorry, I meant Iceweasel browser. The LibreOffice print dialogue only listed "generic printer". I have tried running cupsd as root. Iceweasel still can't establish a connection to the server at localhost:631, but LibreOffice now lists several printers however they do not relate to the printer currently available on the network where I am. running netstat -tulpan | grep 631 as root gives me nothing. Package: icedove Version: 38.5.0-1+b1 Severity: normal Dear Maintainer, * What led up to the situation? I attempt to send an email with a large file attached. I have an account with Box and I have previously successfully sent large attachments using this service. * What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or ineffective)? When I attach the file I get a message saying "This is a large file. It might be better to use Filelink instead." I click on Link and I get a message "Your file is being linked. Bug#1032435: installation-reports: Fails to install GRUB bootloader
Thanks, Pascal. Install in /dev/sda was just an example, it is the one that the installer suggests. I have tried /dev/nvme1n1, /dev/nvme1n1p1 (the ESP partition) and /dev/nvme1n1p2 (the boot partition) all with the same result: The rescue operation 'grub-reinstall' failed with exit code 1 I gave up trying to get the legacy system to work after it failed following updating from bullseye to bookworm by changing sources.list and I am attempting to do a fresh install for an EFI boot. You cannot install GRUB there. Does the installer boot in EFI or legacy mode ? grub-installer prompts in which device to install GRUB when installing for legacy/BIOS boot. It means either the installer booted in legacy mode or booted in EFI mode but you chose to revert to legacy boot after being warned (maybe wrongly) about an existing system set up for legacy boot. When installing GRUB for EFI boot, it automatically chooses one of the selected EFI partitions. The partition layout on /dev/nvme1n1 is set up for EFI boot. GRUB could be installed for legacy boot in /dev/nvme1n1, but it would not be best because there is not "BIOS boot" (bios_grub) partition.
Bug#1032435: installation-reports: Fails to install GRUB bootloader
Thanks, Pascal, you gave me some more ideas where to look. I have spent a lot of time on this without being able to discover exactly where the error lay in order to be able to correct it without going back to square 1. In the end the only thing that has worked has been a complete reinstall including erasing all previous information in all partitions. Consistently what was happening whatever I did was that when I tried to boot it would go straight to grub>: - The grub prompt on a blank screen. When I checked the settings and files information on this screen, e.g. using ls and set commands, the information never corresponded to what was actually installed. Clearly something was wrong that was used very early in the boot process but I was unable to find what. None of the information that I could find online that I could make sense of stated exactly which files or settings the UEFI firmware first goes to. One thing that seems to be the case but is not made clear is that grub needs two partitions for booting. One is a plain EFI partition and the other is a normally formatted (e.g. ext4) partition mounted at /boot. Confusingly, although the EFI partition seems to get mounted as /boot/efi it has to be a separate partition in the installer partitioning scheme.

Bug#501183: xserver-xorg-video-openchrome: System freezes with screen saver
Raphael Geissert wrote: The problem is in the 3d driver (unichrome DRI in Mesa), not with the 2d driver (openchrome). I'm leaving it assigned to this package (and not libgl1-mesa-dri) as it might be possible for someone at -openchrome to fix it. OK. I noted that comment although there is no reference to Mesa in my Xorg log file. I note also that the message seems to originate in the kernel, see /usr/src/linux-source-2.6.26/drivers/char/drm/via_dma.c -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Bug#506516: xserver-xorg: Wrong screen resolution on startup, need to restart
Hi Raphael Geissert wrote: The problem you are facing appears to be a hardware problem, and according to Xavier Bachelot (one of the openchrome devs) it is likely to be in the i2c bus. He suggests forcing the only active output to be the CRT, to try to workaround the incorrect mode used when something is detected on the tv out. Try by adding the following line to the Device section of your xorg.conf: Option "ActiveDevice" "CRT" OK, done that. So far so good, however it is intermittent. I had a system crash last week, possibly due to hardware, and had to reinstall. This bug reoccurred after the re-installation but before I had altered xorg.conf. Presumably this is a problem that affects auto-detection as it did not used to happen (i.e. before auto-detection). -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of "unsubscribe". Bug#462467: acpid: /proc/acpi/event has been deprecated in Linux kernel 2.6.24
I think this bug needs to be reclassified as important. It is throwing up the same symptom as http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=440870, i.e. Installation fails acpid: can't open /proc/acpi/event: No such file or directory. Effects of this is that I get an "Errors were encountered while processing" message whenever I try to install or update with Aptitude and deporphan does not work. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Bug#440870: Installation fails acpid: can't open /proc/acpi/event: No such file or directory
I have resolved my problem - I did not have /proc/acpi/event support (config ACPI_PROC_EVENT) compiled into my kernel (as suggested by the Debian supplied /usr/src/linux-source-2.6.26/drivers/acpi/Kconfig). I was confused by these two bugs, hence I am sending this note to both. Bug 440870 is supposedly just about the file being exclusively opened by hal and is marked fixed. My problem seems to be to do with the retention by Debian of /proc/acpi/event and therefore to do with bug 462467. However, the resolution to my problem is given under bug 440870. Bug#505580: Package: installation-reports
Package: installation-reports This is mainly to report that I had some trouble installing the software on the USB. Generally available versions of boot.img.gz screwed up the USB drive, after doing: zcat /data/Downloads/Debian/boot.img.gz > /dev/sda the drive became unreadable. However, the daily image listed below worked OK. The other problem I had was knowing which iso image to install. http://d-i.alioth.debian.org/manual/en.i386/ch04s03.html just says "copy a Debian netinst or businesscard ISO image to it." which I did not find particularly helpful. Also I understand that it is important to get the iso image from the same source as the boot.img.gz file. Boot method: USB On another Linux computer I: Downloaded http://people.debian.org/~joeyh/d-i/images/daily/hd-media/boot.img.gz and Image version: http://gensho.acc.umu.se/cdimage/daily-builds/daily/arch-latest/i386/iso-cd/debian-testing-i386-netinst.iso Inserted a usb flash memory and in a user terminal did zcat /data/Downloads/Debian/boot.img.gz > /dev/sda Then in a root terminal did: mount /dev/sda /mnt cp /data/Downloads/Debian/debian-testing-i386-netinst.iso /mnt umount /mnt (see http://d-i.alioth.debian.org/manual/en.i386/ch04s03.html) Date: 3/11/08 Machine: MSI Wind U90 The rest of the installation was fairly straightforward though I have not got around to getting the wireless to work yet. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe".
