The problem is not the failure to activate process accounting, but the
"unexpected calloc-failure". Is your container running under very
tight memory restrictions?

This will be fixed in atop 1.27. atop will not exceed 50 MB of memory
and rather drop process accounting records than to DoS the system.

Would it be possible to simply write s-s-d --no-close --background

duende will unfortunately unconditionally redirect the daemon's output
to syslog, which is not what I need in my current case.

Quoting hell is what happens when a command is passed though multiple
instances of shells and shell expansions and you thus never know how
many \'s and "'s you need to have your metachars interpreted by the
correct shell.

Bug#677834: writes to /usr/share/jed/lib during postinst

2012-06-17 Thread Marc Haber
Package: jed-common
Version: 1:0.99.19-2.1
Severity: normal

I am not sure whether this is a policy violation, but it is most
probably a surprise for most users. In Debian I expect all files under
/usr to come from packages, and thus be static. This is not the case
for the *.slc files that are written to /usr/share/jed/lib during
postinst with a call to /usr/share/jed/compile/jed-common install.

In my expectations, such files should be in /var/lib since they're
variable data and not registered with the packaging system.

Upstream cannot make sense out of that bugreport. They don't get which
versions are failing and which are working. Neither do I.

Can you please clarify and give more information such as a recipe to
reproduce the bug?

The "daemon" in my case is atop, which writes its error messages to
stderr, and upstream wants to have those in a log. I have worked
around the s-s-d limitation by having s-s-d call a wrapper around atop
which does the redirection and then execs atop - much ugly, and
introducing a nice new class of errors since the process changes names.

Bug#684213: linux-image-3.5-trunk-amd64: e1000e 82579LM [8086:1502] does not link up

2012-08-07 Thread Marc Haber
Package: src:linux
Version: 3.5-1~experimental.1
Severity: normal

Hi,

my notebook does not get a network link in any Debian version I tried,
including current squeeze, current sid, and current sid with
experimental kernel. I'm reporting this issue with current sid with
experimental kernel running. The symptom is the same regardless of
which kernel is running, including my locally built vanilla kernel, so
this is likely an upstream issue.

Most of the tests I made were done connected to an AVM FritzBox 7390's
internal Gigabit Ethernet interface, but I have made the same
experiences with an HP ProCurve 1800G-8.

The only instance where the Ethernet works just fine is when I connect
the notebook with a straight patch cable to my secondary notebook, a
ThinkPad X121e. The link immediately lights up and comes up with 1000
Mbit/s. Also, when I boot the T520 with Windows 7, the Ethernet
interface works fine with the FritzBox with 1000 Mbit/s.

With Linux, the link just stays down when connected to the FritzBox.
Earlier today, when I was trying to gather information about this
issue, I was interrupted with squeeze running, and when I returned to
the notebook about 45 minutes later, I found the link up and
operational at 1000 Mbit/s. I wasn't able to reproduce this with any
of the system configurations later today, though.

This is a test installation, so I can do all ranges of tests short of
going back to squeeze (I updated squeeze to sid during the tests).

If there is anything I can do, please say so.

Greetings
Marc

Bug#684659: does not properly switch to X on X121e with graphical splash screen

2012-08-12 Thread Marc Haber
Package: plymouth
Version: 0.8.5.1-6
Severity: normal

Hi,

when I have plymouth configured to use a graphical splash screen such
as solar on my ThinkPad X121e, plymouth does not properly switch to X
after the display manager (gdm3) has started.

On my other systems with a similar setups, this works fine. On the
other systems, I use kdm though, so this may be a display manager issue.

The X121e has an Intel Corporation 2nd Generation Core Processor
Family Integrate Graphics Controller [8086:0116], the (working) T520
has a video device with the same name string, but the ID [8086:0126].

I am currently reluctant to replace gdm with kdm on the X121e for
testing.

Greetings
Marc

I think I have it now. Debian's PowerDNS is not built with Botan,
since the autofoo code does not properly detect botan's includes on
Debian. Upstream's pdns-static generates its keys with botan, which
Debian's PolarSSL chokes on. It works the other way around.

I have built Debian PowerDNS packages with Botan support, with kind
help of darix (upstream ticket #555), who fixed the autofoo stuff.

If you want to try the new packages, I can upload them to a web server
if you say so.

Bug#672550: offer to co-maintain

2012-05-11 Thread Marc Haber
Package: pdns
Version: 3.1-1
Severity: wishlist

Hi Matthijs,

I am currently working a lot with PowerDNS, and am in very close touch
with Bert and Peter during my work hours. At my current work place, we
have rolled Debian packages of PowerDNS 3.1 into production and I am
currently working to get them compile on sid/wheezy (currently blocked
by http://wiki.powerdns.com/trac/ticket/458).

My github repository is at https://github.com/Zugschlus/debian-pdns.
Feel free to pull from there, but the package is at the moment not in
a compiling shape.

I would like to offer co-maintenance of PowerDNS in Debian. We can
work like:

 (1) You pull, compile, test and upload.
 (2) You give me write access to your github repository and I push
there. You compile, test and upload.
 (3) You allow me to add myself to uploaders and let me upload to
Debian directly. We both compile, test and upload whenever one
 finds the time.

I would prefer a combination of (2) and (3) ;-)

I also offer to do bug triaging if I am in a position to actually
change things in the package.

Please advise whether you want me to help.

Greetings
Marc

It might be. I tried upgrading and downgrading between squeeze wheezy
and sid like crazy and /etc/insserv.conf.d/pdns-server was always a
plain file.

Since squeeze already has dependency-based boot, I guess this has been
a non-issue for the release of wheezy. If you can give more
information about how to reproduce the bug, I'll be glad to look into
it, but at the moment I don't see what I can do.

Current pdns server doesn't have the allow-recursion-override option
any more. Current behavior is similiar to "on".

Can you please check wither PowerDNS does the right thing now, and
come back to me if not? I'll try again to raise the issue with upstream.

If one can live with piuparts error reports and strange warnings
during package installation, yes. I have arranged myself with that.

Eleven years after this bug was initially filed, I think that this
feature should be implemented not in debhelper, but in
dpkg-maintscript-helper, which has taken the responsibility of
implementing common maintscript actions in the mean time.

I think it would be the best way to just have a variable containing a
list of services to start defined in the script-config file, and
optionally having a hook to automatically invoke a certain script
inside the chroot on session creation for more complex things.

Bug#639105: [buildd-tools-devel] Bug#639105: please consider adding support for lvm-snapshot on crypted LV

Encrypted PV will work with current schroot setup, you can just take a
snapshot from the LV and directly use it.

Encrypted LV is a little bit harder.

I would suggest configuration like:

[sid_build64]
type=crypted-lvm-snapshot
device=/dev/salida/c_sid_build64
mapping-name=sid_build64
script-config=zg2-build/config
description=sid amd64 for building packages
users=mh
source-users=mh
personality=linux
lvm-snapshot-options=-L 4G

You could also auto-generate the mapping-name for the unlocked volume.
That way, things would just work without a new configuration key.
Optionally, you could implement this inside the normal lvm-snapshot
type by trying cryptsetup isLuks which will indicate whether
the device is encrypted or not.

To enable this chroot, you would need:

lvcreate --snapshot --name
cryptdisks_start
mount /dev/mapper/

This would need the crypttabl line for to be repeated for
, and the cryptdisks_start call will probably go
interactive, querying the user for the passphrase.

This is horribly untested.

Greetings
Marc

I was about to suggest that. I'll request a project on alioth and get

torrus-apache2 is a deprecated method of using torrus that should not
be used for new installs. We have documented this.

We only support apache2, and we depend on apache2-mpm-prefork |
apache2, and conflict against apache2-mpm-worker and apache2-mpm-event

Do we need to change things for a package that is not recommended to
be used in wheezy and that will go away for wheezy+1?

Bug#673443: Please add option to use btrfs snapshots instead of LVM snapshots

2012-05-18 Thread Marc Haber
Package: mini-buildd
Severity: wishlist

Hi,

it would be nice if mini-buildd-bld would be able to use btrfs snapshots
instead of LVM. That way, all build chroots would be inside the same
fs, making for more efficient use of disk space. One would have one
subvolume per distribution.

schroot can operate on a btrfs-snapshot, so the work in mini-buildd
would actually be quite easy to do.

I am willing to deliver a patch if you indicate that you would accept
it. If you use a public VCS, I would make the patch against current
HEAD so that it is easier to apply.

Greetings

all messages short of the ones that are addressed to Edelhard directly.

Edelhard, this is about your last chance to step in. Please consider
subscribing to the PTS of atop. If you don't move, my first upload of
atop after August 1st 2012 will have myself listed as Maintainer.

If there is no source package, that doesn't help much for Debian
packaging. Additionally, this seems to be an older version judging
from the filename. I wasn't able to find any reference to a linux
version on the metageek page.

Please attach the fix to the bug report or give coordinates for the

Bug#671460: possibly wrong debug output in rm_conffile

2012-05-04 Thread Marc Haber
Package: dpkg
Version: 1.16.3
Severity: minor
File: /usr/bin/dpkg-maintscript-helper

Hi,

in dpkg-maintscript-helper's rm_conffile function, the code goes to
lengths to set the PACKAGE variable correctly, but the debug output
"Executing $0 rm_conffile ..." still refers to
DPKG_MAINTSCRIPT_PACKAGE which may not be set. PACKAGE, however, seems
to be correct in more cases.

I am therefore wondering whether the debug output shouldn't be
referring to PACKAGE instead of DPKG_MAINTSCRIPT_PACKAGE.

Bug#671855: please create init script from upstream source

2012-05-07 Thread Marc Haber
Package: pdns
Severity: wishlist

Hi,

Debian's init script is closely related to the one that is shipped by
upstrea. It therefore needs manual care if upstream changes its init
script, which has btw happened in 3.1.

Please consider taking upstreams pdns.in and patching it to result in
Debian's init script. That way, upstream changes are automatically
taken for Debian's package, and if the changes are incompatible, build
fails.

Bug#671856: uses convenience copy of packaged library PolarSSL

2012-05-07 Thread Marc Haber
Package: pdns
Severity: wishlist

Hi,

Policy 4.13 says:

Some software packages include in their distribution convenience
copies of code from other software packages, generally so that users
compiling from source don't have to download multiple packages.
Debian packages should not make use of these convenience copies unless
the included package is explicitly intended to be used in this way.[1]
If the included code is already in the Debian archive in the form of a
library, the Debian packaging should ensure that binary packages
reference the libraries already in Debian and the convenience copy is
 not used.

Unfortunately, Debian's PowerDNS package seems to use the local
convenience copy of PolarSSL that is shipped with PowerDNS upstream.
Please consider using a Debian PolarSSL.

I am already working with upstream to have this added as a configure
option.

Greetings
Marc

Yes, my reproducer.c happens to happen on a KVM VM, and the physical
host compiles the code just fine.

Btw, removing -O2 from the cc1 command line makes the compile work
even inside the VM.

Bug#668491: knotify crashes after phonon-vlc glitch

Package: kde-runtime

Severity: normal
Forwarded: https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=297950

Even if there is something wrong with the phonon-vlc backend, knotify
should not crash.

The VLC error message is "LibVLC failed to initialize. Phonon's VLC
backend failed to start. This usually means a problem with your VLC
installation, please report a bug with your distributor". When I click
on "Details" in this error message box, I see a single random byte.

I see this on current Debian unstable, on two different systems.

I have also filed this upstream as
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=297950.

Marc

This is very obviously the home directory of the user.

Please point me to the part of policy where policy states the place to
put a user's home directory if it is needed, for example to place an
.ssh/authorized_keys file.

That part of the FHS is about /usr/local, not /home.

You probably want to read the maintainer scripts of packages you're
filing bugs on. I know that I cannot demand that you're only filing
bugs on packages you care for and have some basic familiarity with.

Slightly annoyed.

This is an upstream bug. Does upstream have a tracker, or do I need to
report this to nagios-users?

Bug#666448: man page icinga(8) missing -p and -u options

2012-03-30 Thread Marc Haber
Package: icinga-core
Severity: wishlist

Hi,

the icinga(8) man page is missing the object pre-cache options.

  -x, --dont-verify-paths Don't check for circular object paths -
USE WITH CAUTION!
  -p, --precache-objects Precache object configuration - use
with -v or -s options
-u, --use-precached-objects Use precached object config file

These should be mentioned in the man page as well. While we're at it,
it seems that icinga offers long command line options that should be
in the man page as well.

Greetings
Marc
