After looking into this some more I have realized that my initial bug
report is incorrect. This seems to not be related to the -y switch at
all, but if I accept the simulation for installing a package once it
always assumes I want to accept it in the future. And, sometimes I am
not asked for a confirmation for removal of a package at all, this lead
me to believe running -y caused this. See this terminal session where I
install a package I never installed or removed in the past (In this case
network-manager-gnome on a Xfce install that ships WICD)
http://paste.debian.net/hidden/7fc7d5cf

Expected behavior is to always be asked before installing or removing a
package unless -y is specified. If my assumption that pkcon is meant
to always ask is incorrect, there should at least be an option listed in
pkcon --help to force this confirmation.

Hi!
I don't think this is a bug :) First of all: You don't need to execute
pkcon using sudo, just running pkcon is enough. PolicyKit will ask you
for your password. Also, pkcon never asks you to confirm an
installation, if it only wants to install the package you specified on
the command-line. Pkcon will ask you to confirm stuff, if it has
additional changes, e.g. package removal or additional packages which
have to be installed. If you execute pkcon a second time, installing
"network-manager-gnome", all additional packages are aleady installed,
so pkcon does not ask anything. Please do a autoremove (sudo apt-get
--purge autoremove) and execute pkcon install again, I bet you will be
asked for confirmation :)
Cheers,

You are correct that sudo apt-get --purge autoremove does bring back the
confirmation. I still find the default a bit uncomfortable. It might be
because pkcon isn't apt :-\ Having the ability to set various options
like forcing confirmations on all operations in a config file and/or
forcing them through a command line option would be nice. This would be
best filed as a feature request to upstream, which I will handle
myself. Please close this bug and thank you for your time and the
explanation of what pkcon is doing.

I'm happy to do some proper testing, rebuild with a different method if needed.
And any input on how to test the packages, can i just use dpkg overwrite my

Bug#659775: simple fix, for a user anyway.

2012-03-29 Thread anthony
hi, just stumbled across this since i was looking at samba4

just rm/mv smb.conf which is installed by the older samba packages at the same
time as samba4.

so apt-get install samba4: err
rm /etc/samba/smb.conf
apt-get install samba4

now, in relation to this error :
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/samba4/+bug/832465/comments/12
suggests:
/etc/hosts
127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain localhost
127.0.1.1 svrwebdev.letsxchange.nl svrwebdev
/etc/hostname
svrwebdev.letsxchange.nl

which fixes the same problem for other people.

there seems to be two traps people are falling into. one old smb.conf they want
migrated with bad options, fresh smb.conf they don't need and samba4 should
ignore or have the default for the old samba packages corrected.

the default local domain is usually a single prefix .local .config etc. This
also seems to be a problem for samba4, which wants lan.config local.lan etc,
due to the AD DNS type prefixing.

now i installed without changing the DNS files as advised above(but using a
local.lan as the local dns prefix), i'm not 100% everything is working, but i
will show the relevant output incase just setting a correct internal dns /
hostname is not the same as hostname/hosts fixes above.

Adding DomainDN:   DC=local,DC=lan
Creating CN=MicrosoftDNS,CN=System,DC=local,DC=lan
Server Role : domain controller
Hostname:   correct
DNS Domain: local.lan
NetBIOS Domain: WORKGROUP < m$ default? set it to DNS Domain, without the
prefix?
DOMAIN SID: generated correctly.
Admin password: really secure.

so in closing, only smb.conf removal seems to be required as well as local.lan
style dns prefix instead of just single .local
Please correct me if I am wrong, and at least it seems the fixes are trivial.

Bug#856195: sddm: /usr/share/sddm/faces/username.face.icon is ignored

2017-02-27 Thread Anthony
Package: sddm
Version: 0.14.0-2
Bug#856195

I solved by downloading the source package sddm, edited the file
“sddm-0.14.0/src/greeter/UserModel.cpp” and applied these changes:
...
const QString facesDir = mainConfig.Theme.FacesDir.get();
-   const QString defaultFace = QStringLiteral("file://%1/.fac
e.icon").arg(facesDir);
+   const QString defaultFace = QStringLiteral("%1/.face.icon"
).arg(facesDir);
...
// search for face icon
user->icon = defaultFace;

+   QString userFace = QStringLiteral("%1/.face.icon").arg(user->homeDir);
+   if (QFile::exists(userFace))
+ user->icon = userFace;
...

and compiled with:
cd sddm-0.14.0
debuild -i -us -uc -b -d
cd ..
dpkg -i sddm_0.14.0-2_amd64.deb
apt-mark hold sddm
systemctl daemon-reload
systemctl restart sddm

After restart the service, the icons have reappeared.

Thanks,
Anthony

Bug#866724: python3-cairo: Upgrading to version 1.10.0+dfsg-5+b3 corrupts the python runtime environment

2017-07-01 Thread Anthony
Package: python3-cairo
Version: 1.10.0+dfsg-5+b3
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

Dear Maintainer,

If you have already installed python3 runtime libraries and updated the
python3-cairo package, from version 1.10.0+dfsg-5+b2 to 1.10.0+dfsg-5+b3, some
essential files will be removed and the environment Python will no longer be
usable.

As a solution I had to reinstall the python runtime
libraries and the updates made with pip / pip3.

Thanks

Bug#1070807: konsole: Konsole did not close redundant FDs when creating shell process in terminal session

2024-05-09 Thread anthony
Package: konsole
Version: 4:23.08.1-1+b1
Severity: important
X-Debbugs-Cc: lkphantom1...@gmail.com

Dear Maintainer,

   * What led up to the situation?
   The terminal did not close redundant FDs when creating shell process.
   * What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or
 ineffective)?
   * What was the outcome of this action?
   The shell process has many unexpected redundant FDs, and those FDs
   were inherit from konsole.
   * What outcome did you expect instead?
   The terminal emulator should not leave any redundant FDs for shell
   process.

   Today I found my Zsh comes with 157 FDs, in common sense zsh won't
   create such large amount open files. Then I tried command
   'konsole -e /bin/sleep 1', even through, the sleep process also
   has 100+ FDs that shouldn't exists.

   By comparing the FDs' number, those FDs were inherit from konsole.

   I thought you may close redundant FDs before creating shell process,
   or use CLOEXEC flag.

   This is my test output in konsole:
   % uname -r
   6.1.27.xeon.ll
   % ls /proc/self/fd | wc -l
   157
   % ls /proc/$PPID/fd | wc -l

Bug#1078449: hdparm: Creates unnecessary sdX:sdX1 kernel log entries for unmounted file systems

2024-08-10 Thread anthony
Package: hdparm
Version: 9.65+ds-1
Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,

Hi I have a fresh install of debian 12 on a headless server which I added
hdparm to using the debian hdparm package. I also have a drive with a partition
that is not mounted.

I have notived that every 5 minutes my kernel log has the following logged to
it:

sdc: sdc1

I have traced this to the udev rule that was added by hdparm "85-hdparm.rules"

Further if I call the action in that rule manually with "/lib/udev/hdparm
/dev/sdc" I get the log in my kernel again.

This only happens if the file system is not mounted, if it is mounted then
there are no log entries. I however want to keep the filesystem unmounted as I
only mount it via a cron job to perform backups and then dismount it.

I would prefer not to have the kernel log filled up like this as it makes it
difficult to read the logs.

I am assuming that this is a issue or undesired feature with hdparm

Bug#151566: Shipping Clerk - flexible time work-at-home opening

2007-09-29 Thread Anthony

  Our company is looking for energetic and accountable individuals to occupy
  Shipping Clerk positions throughout the USA. These vacancies are entirely
  home-based and do not require any travel or relocation. They are also
  suitable for students and senior citizens who are able to dedicate up to
  three business hours per day to their duties. No special qualifications are
  required, although previous shipping or customer service experience is a
  plus. We are an international company providing mail/internet order
  opportunities for a global clientele since 1997. We are based in Russia, and
  also have offices in Latvia and Kazakhstan. Our business provides
  online/Online Order facilities for those who are unable to benefit from the
  convenience of e-commerce due to lack of a banking relationship with an
  internationally recognized bank or because major online vendors will not
  ship to their location. We have domestic purchasing agents who place the
  orders on behalf of our clients, and the goods are then shipped to the local
  shipping clerks for further sorting and international shipment. We also
  provide escrow services for high amount and/or web auction orders, and offer
  assistance with customs clearance, if required. Currently, we are looking
  for individuals to fill in the positions of shipping clerks throughout the
  USA. Your duties will include receiving, sorting, repackaging and re-sending
  the orders made on behalf of our clients using the pre-paid USPS shipping
  labels that you will receive via email. You will be paid $20 for each parcel
  that you ship, plus $5 for each order that you will need to re-sort or
  re-package. We will also cover any other authorized expense, such as extra
  insurance or shipping materials. Your remuneration will be remitted to you
  via Western Union twice a month. You can expect to handle 5-15 incoming
  packages weekly, following a 2 week probation period. You can perform your
  duties from the convenience of your home. You will generally be re-shipping
  the orders on same day or next day basis, so you will not need to sacrifice
  your home space to storage. You will only be receiving orders placed with
  reputable online vendors and delivered by major courier services, such as
  FedEx and UPS, who pay great attention to ensuring that they are not
  involved into trafficking any illegal substances or hazardous materials.
  Thus, there will be no risk on your end. We also encourage you to open and
  inspect each package that you receive to ensure the legitimacy and safety of
  itsâ content. In order to fill the shipping clerk position, you need to be
  aged 18 and above, have a permanent address where you are available on a
  regular basis and also have access to phone and email. In order to ensure
  that you can be entrusted the client merchandise, we will need to verify
  your identity and confirm that you do not have any previous criminal
  convictions. To apply for this position and for more information on our
  company, please fax your resume and (optionally) cover letter to: (309)
  431-7288.

You may not have your Jack set to, but Jack is capable of running multiple
encoders in parellel. I haven't tested, but even assuming Jack has some
consistent notion of "current", I very much doubt the user is aware of it.

I've got one ripper and four encoders going. I press Control-C. Not sure
what Jack currently does, but I suspect if it involves stopping one of the
processes, no user is going to be able to predict which one (unless it is
always the ripper).

Bug#612037: Proftpd fails to start if gadmin-proftpd is used to generate configuration file

2011-02-04 Thread Anthony
Package: gadmin-proftpd
Version: 1:0.4.0-1
Severity: important

More specifically the proftp daemon will die and refuse to restart if you add a
user to the FTP server. Proftpd will fail with the following output whether
started manually from terminal or through gadmin-proftpd.
 - Fatal: TLSRSACertificateFile: '/etc/gadmin-proftpd/certs/cert.pem' does not
exist on line 65 of '/etc/proftpd/proftpd.conf'

I have worked around this issue by doing the following:

gksu mousepad /etc/proftpd/proftpd.conf
And, removed these entries:
TLSRSACertificateFile /etc/gadmin-proftpd/certs/cert.pem
TLSRSACertificateKeyFile /etc/gadmin-proftpd/certs/key.pem
TLSCACertificateFile /etc/gadmin-proftpd/certs/cacert.pem

This fix works (The server is running and I can access from non local machines)
but I am unsure if it is wise.

A quick search shows that /etc/gadmin-proftpd does not contain a folder named
/certs and the files cert.pem, key.pem and cacert.pem do not exist anywhere on
the system.

This is a quick and clean fix, because the chromium package is already
linking

/usr/bin/chromium-browser to /usr/bin/chromium.

Sorry I wrote this bug report while really tired, the real issue is that
removing the old package removes /usr/share/pixmaps/chromium-browser.
This makes all launchers pointing to it lose their icon, the patch is
still a valid fix. This is already being done for the binary, but should
be done for the Icon as well.

Bug#993017: plasma-workspace: Desktop freeze and occupies two CPU core (dead loop)

to notification module (most cases happens while notification were flood by
some apps, but that won't trigger this problem in elder version).

I've got some STDOUT log from 'plasmashell' while problem happen:

Bug#930724: libapache2-mod-evasive: Configure HTTP response code

2019-06-19 Thread anthony
Package: libapache2-mod-evasive
Version: 1.10.1-3
Severity: wishlist

Dear Maintainer,

At present, libapache2-mod-evasive returns HTTP 403 Frobidden when an IP is
blocked. This HTTP response code may not always be appropriate, as per RFC
6585, where a client has sent too many requests the HTTP reponse code 429 maybe
more accurate.

I'v attached a patch that adds a setting to libapache-mod-evasive:
DOSHTTPResponseCode, which can be set to any response code between 100 and 599.

Regards,

Anthony.

Bug#996550: libqt5gui5: Trap in LibQXCB-GLX with 100% cpu usage after QOpenGLContext::create() called

2021-10-15 Thread anthony
Package: libqt5gui5
Version: 5.15.2+dfsg-9
Severity: important
X-Debbugs-Cc: lkphantom1...@gmail.com

Dear Maintainer,

I'm stuck up when calling QOpenGLContext::create(), it didn't return, and one
cpu
was totally occupied by QSGRenderThread, it looks like dead loop occurs in that
thread.

this's not always happening; and sometimes UI rendering error (like unexpected
chessboard-like pattern shows up in my GL render area) happens before this
problem
occurs.

i'm using libGLX_mesa, and i'm not sure which side should responsible for this
problem, so i send this bugreport to you.

Regards,

Bug#291338: apt: md5/sha1 checksum routines should work if length of file is unknown

2005-01-19 Thread Anthony Towns
Package: apt
Version: 0.5.4
Severity: wishlist
Tags: patch

SHA1Summation::AddFD should work on pipes as well as regular files
so files don't need to be uncompressed to disk to be summed. This
impacts python-apt too, since it doesn't offer a cumulative interface
to SHA1Summation.

Easy fix seems like it'd be:

 bool SHA1Summation::AddFD(int Fd,unsigned long Size)
 {
unsigned char Buf[64 * 64];
int Res = 0;
-   while (Size != 0)
+   int ToEOF = (Size == 0);
+   while (Size != 0 || ToEOF);
{
-  Res = read(Fd,Buf,MIN(Size,sizeof(Buf)));
-  if (Res < 0 || (unsigned) Res != MIN(Size,sizeof(Buf)))
+  int n = sizeof(Buf);
+  if (!ToEOF) n = MIN(Size,n);
+  Res = read(Fd,Buf,n);
+  if (Res < 0 || (!ToEOF && (unsigned) Res != n)) // error, or short read
  return false;
+  if (ToEOF && Res == 0) // EOF
+ break;
   Size -= Res;
   Add(Buf,Res);
}
return true;
 }

Bug#290128: I suspect this is the broken endian.h file

2005-01-26 Thread Anthony DeRobertis
Package: xmms-scrobbler
Followup-For: Bug #290128

-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

The broken macros in endian.h create absurd results when dealing with
numbers > 127 due to assuming char is unsigned.

Basically, it returns a really large number (e.g., several gigs), which
is then passed to malloc. malloc (naturally) returns NULL on 32-bit
archs. The result of malloc is not tested (ugh...), and then a memcpy to
NULL is attempted. [The results would be different, possibly worse, on a
64-bit arch where the malloc could succeed.]

If you change debian/rules to do:
CFLAGS="$(CFLAGS)" configure ...
(you should probably do this anyway)

and then
export DEB_BUILD_OPTS='noopt,nostrip'
dpkg-buildpackage -rfakeroot -b -uc

install the resulting package, and you can easily watch the crash by
running xmms (or I assume bmp) under ddd. The backtrace the reporter
provided is wrong due to compiling with optimizations (ok, not wrong,
but misleading).

See my post on the AudioScrobbler forums:
http://www.audioscrobbler.com/forum/4/_/18676

I've patched it locally as shown in that post; that's the only reason
most of my music doesn't crash xmms.

PS: glib provides, I believe, endian conversion functions; any reason
not to use those?

PS(2): ALWAYS check the result of malloc. malloc hates you. malloc will
   fail when you least expect it.

PS(3): Doesn't libvorbis or libvorbisfile already have things for
   reading Vorbis tags? Any reason not to use it?

mount covers that up with the /var/log partition.

Doing a chattr +i /var/log on the root parition works around this

Bug#341801: skge hardware error; hangs w/ hardware memory hole

2005-12-02 Thread Anthony DeRobertis
Package: linux-image-2.6.14-2-amd64-k8-smp
Version: 2.6.14-4
Severity: important

-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-

I have a Asus A8V with 4GB of RAM. When I turn on the hardware memory
hole in the BIOS, the skge driver prints out this message:

skge hardware error detected (status 0xc00)

and then does not work. Setting debug=16 doesn't really show anything.

Also, sometimes it causes the kernel to panic (noticed during a raid
rebuild; a sata error followed a second later by one or more panics)
with messages which scroll by way to fast to catch, and shift-pagup
doesn't work. I'm pretty sure this is related to the skge thing; it
doesn't happen until ifup eth0.

We are doing some automated SID network installs and I end up with a bad
/etc/network/interfaces file. I tracked the problem to a misplaced quote
in the netcfg-common.c file. The patch is attached.

Thanks!

Bug#342727: html2text: Long description is not a description

2005-12-09 Thread Anthony DeRobertis
Package: html2text

html2text was written because the author wasn't happy with the
output of "lynx -dump" and so he wrote something better.

That does not actually describe what the package does. (Note that long
descriptions are not supposed to be continuations of the short

Bug#342733: pstotext: \255 is not hyphen

2005-12-09 Thread Anthony DeRobertis
Package: pstotext
Version: 1.9-1sarge1
Severity: minor

Depending on which standard you read, and how you read them, 0xAD can
mean one of the following:
- An indicator that a program may put in a file to say "I broke this
  word and line here" displayed just like hyphen/minus (one reading
  of ISO-8859-1). Under this reading, it must only occur at the end
  of a line. [KORPELA]
- An indicator that a line break MAY be taken here. If the
  displaying program elects to take the line break, it should
  display e.g., U+2010. Otherwise, it should display nothing.
  (Unicode; HTML; other reading of 8859-1). See especially [TR14]'s
  section on the "soft hyphen"

Which one is correct really doesn't matter, but its fairly clear that
the hyphenated version of email should be written as either e-mail or
e‐mail, but certainly not as email. [Depending on your email client,
the last one may just show as "email". Its not --- its e\255mail]

pstotext should never output \255.

Bug#343237: Incorrect timestamp generated after daylight savings time ends

2005-12-13 Thread Anthony DeRobertis
Package: libparse-syslog-perl
Version: 1.03-1
Severity: normal

Our syslog near the end of October this year looks like this:

Oct 30 01:59:53 ivr3 bayonne: dx(8): play
Oct 30 01:59:58 ivr3 bayonne: dx(8): step  sleep(%timeout)
Oct 30 01:59:58 ivr3 bayonne: dx(8): sleep
Oct 30 01:00:00 ivr3 CROND[6946]: (root) CMD (/usr/lib/sa/sa1 1 1)
Oct 30 01:00:00 ivr3 CROND[6947]: (root) CMD (/usr/local/bin/runtsync)
Oct 30 01:00:04 ivr3 bayonne: dx(8): step  set(%warning,%noinput)

Parse::Syslog doesn't correctly handle the second 1AM. Instead, it warps
the time backwards! That is, if you paste the above into the following:

perl -MParse::Syslog -e 'my $p = new Parse::Syslog("/dev/stdin", arrayref =>
1); while ($arr = $p->next) { print "$arr->[0]\n" }'

You get:

1130651993
1130651998
1130651998
1130648400
1130648400
1130648404

When it finally hits this line:

Oct 30 02:00:00 ivr3 CROND[7083]: (root) CMD (/usr/lib/sa/sa1 1 1)

it manages to spit out a correct time stamp again, 1130655600.

Yeah, certainly can't be guaranteed 100% right. I suspect spitting out a
warning in that case would be a good idea. But often (always if you have
--mark-- generation enabled) there will be enough info in the log to
derive the actual unix timestamp.

E.g., with logic along the lines of this pseudocode:

if its a fallback day (set clocks back 1 hour day)
  if its between fallback_hour and fallback_hour - 1
if a negative time warp > X secs occurs
  then switch to standard time

with "its" referring to the timestamp of the log line being looked at.

Negative time warps can occur, especially with stupid clock setting
programs which don't slew the clock. [Yeah, we have one at work, and
I've been cursing at it...]. I'm not sure if anything else can cause
time warps in syslogs. So I'm not sure what a good number for X is.

Unfortunately, its too late to report bugs in Bejamin Franklin :-D And
changing all the world's syslogds could be difficult (and, considering
the systems generating these logs are running redhat 7...)

Bug#344289: Some time servers result in sending 1 query per second, causing DoS

2005-12-21 Thread Anthony DeRobertis
Package: ntp-server
Version: 1:4.2.0a+stable-2sarge1
Severity: important

When ntpd polls 69.17.7.16, it starts polling once per second, which is
clearly an unacceptable poll rate. This might be due to the invalid
responses the server is sending which has an invalid peer polling
interval of 0. The Debian default configuration, with the servers
changed to include 69.17.7.16 reproduce this issue. [I didn't have the
local clock in, and had {0,1,2}.us.pool.ntp.org in]
For the following packet trace, 172.16.1.31 is the local side and
69.17.7.16 is the remote side. Thus, the first packet is a query; the
second is a response:

Bug#337694: xserver-xorg: Second display not used on Matrox G550.

2005-11-05 Thread Anthony Roberts
Package: xserver-xorg
Version: 6.8.2.dfsg.1-7
Severity: important

I did a Debian-testing (Etch) install from a netinst CD. The automatic
/etc/X11/xorg.conf file produced a configuration that worked, but didn't
use the second display. Instead, both displays showed the same thing. This
is not unusual for a system that I have not yet set up to use the second
display.

I edited xorg.conf (see below) to use the second display. I restarted the
X server and it worked correctly. However, upon rebooting the second
display did not work with the new configuration. Instead of mirroring the
first display, the monitor remained in the standby mode (presumeably it
was not recieving a signal). I reverted back to the old configuration, got
the mirrored display, used the new configuration, and got the second
display correctly. This is my workaround.

I was previously using Debian-stable (Sarge) and the second display worked
correctly with that.

I'm using a Matrox G550 AGP 32mb video card with an Asus A8V motherboard.

This is definitely at creation time.

Messages sent to [EMAIL PROTECTED] are not cc'd to me (this isn't
aimed at you, Sven; rather the other people who have commented in the
BTS). You have to send to [EMAIL PROTECTED] or me
directly... Darn you BTS!

A lot of the standard /tmp races don't apply to yaird because yaird uses
mkdir, not open. Concerns about races w/ tmpreaper are also not an
issue, because yaird is run with admin supervision; certainly, if the
admin does not notice someone slowing his system so that yaird runs for
days so that tmpreaper decides to remove yaird's tmpdir then, well, he
deserves what he gets.

And, for the record, I (the admin) did not decide to use /boot as a
temporary directory. Using TMPDIR is fine, but when its not set, the
default should be /tmp, because that's the way Unix programs are
supposed to work.

Bug#338898: Please give dircolors a configration file instead of compiled-in defaults

2005-11-13 Thread Anthony DeRobertis
Package: coreutils
Version: 5.2.1-2.1
Severity: wishlist
File: /usr/bin/dircolors

It seems right now that if I want to change system-wide defaults for
dircolors, I must download coreutils source, patch it, and install the
modified version. As changing the dircolors database seems like a
perfectly reasonable thing for the sysadmin to want to do, this really
should be a configuration file.

Excerpt from /etc/skel/.bashrc:

# enable color support of ls and also add handy aliases
if [ "$TERM" != "dumb" ]; then
eval "`dircolors -b`"
alias ls='ls --color=auto'
#alias dir='ls --color=auto --format=vertical'
#alias vdir='ls --color=auto --format=long'
fi

So just adding it to e.g., /etc/bash.bashrc won't work (unless you edit
every user's bashrc file).

I've attached a patch which seems to work.

Bug#347412: using network (skge) and disk (SATA/promise) at same time = one breaks

2006-01-10 Thread Anthony DeRobertis
Package: linux-image-2.6.15-1-amd64-k8-smp
Version: 2.6.15-1
Severity: grave

-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-

I have an ASUS A8V motherboard. When I use both the on-board LAN, skge,
and the on-board Promise PDC20378 SATA controller, one or the other
dies. Ways to kill the machine include NFS server; raid rebuild + pretty
much any network; etc.

When the network interface dies, ifdown/modprobe -r/modprobe/ifup is
sufficient to make it work again, for a few minutes.

When SATA dies, hitting the reset button is required.

2.6.12 w/ the sk98lin ethernet module works fine. I can test 2.6.14 if
you'd like. I'll also test sk98lin under 2.6.15 this evening.

Bug#347445: Background download support

2006-01-10 Thread Anthony DeRobertis
Package: aptitude
Version: 0.2.15.9-2
Severity: wishlist

When I'm going through the package list selecting packages, aptitude
could start downloading (not installing) the packages as I select them.
So after I slowly make my way through the long list of packages, the
download would already be at least partially complete, reducing the
amount of time I get to sit watching aptitude download.

Bug#157084: Performance gains of using weird MEMSET macro

2006-01-10 Thread Anthony DeRobertis
In regards to bug 157084, I can answer how much performance the MEMSET
macro gains you:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:test-memset$ cat test-memset.c
#include

int set(char *x) {
memset(x, 0, 10);
}

int main() {
char buf[10];
set(buf);
}

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:test-memset$ gcc -O2 -c test-memset.c
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:test-memset$ objdump -d test-memset.o

test-memset.o: file format elf64-x86-64

Disassembly of section .text:

 :
   0:   48 c7 07 00 00 00 00movq   $0x0,(%rdi)
   7:   66 c7 47 08 00 00   movw   $0x0,0x8(%rdi)
   d:   c3  retq
   e:   66  data16
   f:   90  nop

0010 :
  10:   48 83 ec 18 sub$0x18,%rsp
  14:   48 89 e7mov%rsp,%rdi
  17:   e8 00 00 00 00  callq  1c
  1c:   48 83 c4 18 add$0x18,%rsp
  20:   c3  retq

That's right. GCC knows what memset does, and doesn't even generate a
function call. It generates optimal assembly based upon the amount of
memory being set.

Not really. First off, its definitely not consistent with the manpage,
which explicitly says control characters are not treated specially. So
there is at least a minor bug in the manpage.

Second, tab is no more a nongraphic character than space, which is
printed normally. So the behavior is not consistent with the info entry
either.

Just make absolutely sure it doesn't break Linux installs; otherwise
NMU now and if there're problems I'll whine at you later.

Cheers,

This sounds like it closes #299554 as far as the installer is concerned
however, if "no network card" is selected in the network configuration
of the first stage of the installation, no /etc/resolv.conf will be
created, and subsequent static or dynamic nameserver settings will be
lost if the user tries to set up PPP. I believe that the resolvconf
package solves this problem. Is resolvconf included in the latest
installer?

Bug#344997: see @.png does not work; neither does display @.png

2005-12-28 Thread Anthony DeRobertis
Package: imagemagick
Version: 6:6.2.4.5-0.2
Severity: normal
File: /usr/lib/mime/packages/imagemagick

-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:tmp$ file @.png

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:tmp$ display @.png
display: unable to open file `.png': No such file or directory.

As opposed to:

Or:

Or:
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:tmp$ xli @.png
@.png is a 501x209 8 bit deep RGB PNG image with an alpha channel

Software: RRDtool, Tobias Oetiker <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>, http://tobi.oetiker.ch
  Default gamma for ITRUE image is 1.00
  Building XImage...done
  Have adjusted image from 1.00 to display gamma of 2.20

"see" is documented as taking a file name, and @.png is definitely a
file name, so this should work. Convert @.png not working also appears
to be a bug (according to
file:///usr/share/doc/imagemagick/www/command-line-processing.html).

This does work, however, and should probably be display's mailcap entry
for image/png:
display png:@.png

Especially since otherwisee "see jpg:haha.png" wouldn't work, AFAICT.

Bug#345293: apache2-like rules-available and rules-enabled directories would be cleaner

2005-12-29 Thread Anthony DeRobertis
Package: udev
Version: 0.076-6
Severity: wishlist

-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

Apache2 has directories named like "mods-available" and "mods-enabled"
as well as "sites-available" and "sites-enabled". Things are enabled by
creating symlinks in the -enabled directory to the file(s) in the
corresponding -available directory.

udev seems to have a rules.d directory with a similar purpose as the
apache2 -enabled directories; however, the contents of -available is
just spewed all over /etc/udev.d. I think it'd be a much cleaner, and
more self-documenting, to move those to a -available-like directory.

Bug#336645: Please fix this, even if it doesn't affect the default config

2006-01-01 Thread Anthony DeRobertis
register_globals is often turned on to support legacy code and
CVE-2005-3390 makes code which by the documentation should be safe not so.

Consider:

> ; You should do your best to write your scripts so that they do not require
> ; register_globals to be on; Using form variables as globals can easily lead
> ; to possible security problems, if the code is not very well thought of.

>From the Debian-shipped php.ini, certainly does not warn that
register_globals itself is a security problem, but rather that poorly
written scripts are.

> but keep in mind that the directive itself isn't insecure but rather it's the
> misuse of it.

>From . The page also notes that
reliance on the directive "was quite common and many people didn't even
know it existed and assumed it's just how PHP works." It then goes on to
explain how register_globals is unsafe --- examples which show the
well-known register_globals problem, not the CVE-2005-3390 one. Further,
one of the examples (29-3) could even be subverted by this bug!

Also, considering the number of Debian installations which probably have
register_globals turned on, and how that makes (as already pointed out
in this bug) anything using PEAR extremely vulnerable, I really think
this ought to be fixed in stable ASAP.

CVSS rates this as an 8 (high).
testing-security rates this as medium.

Bug#336302: wireless-tools: Wireless won'g connect

2005-10-29 Thread Anthony Campbell

I made a fresh install of Debian on a spare partition via netinst and
everything worked perfectly. I then did a dist-upgrade to Sid and the

Bug#336302: Further information

2005-10-30 Thread Anthony Campbell
Someone else on the Debian user list has encountered a similar problem.
However, I now think it may not be wireless-tools that is responsible.

I did a fresh install of debian stable via netinst and everything
worked. I then upgraded both wireless-tools and pcmcia-cs from
Sid and the wireless connection still worked. However, a full
dist-upgrade breaks the connection as before.

It therefore seems as it the bug is not in wireless-tools as such, but I
have no idea which package is responsible.

Bug#337279: yaird: /boot != /tmp

2005-11-03 Thread Anthony DeRobertis
Package: yaird
Version: 0.0.11-10
Severity: important

/boot is for "static files of the boot loader" according to the FHS.
yaird is attempting to use it as /tmp, and failing horribly as it runs
out of inodes:

Please create the temporary files where temporary files belong, namely /tmp.

It appears this might just require a several-line change to
/usr/lib/yaird/perl/Pack.pm's sub package ($$$). It might make sense to
go for the atomic move in directory mode, but certainly not in cpio
mode.

I'm not sure what you're asking... A tmpfs can definitely be mounted on
/tmp, and I suppose yaird could mount a tmpfs wherever it plans to
create its temporary files, but I'm not sure why you'd want to do that.

/tmp exists for a reason; why not use it?

Bug#339473: hotplug breaks wireless-tools

2005-11-16 Thread Anthony Campbell
Package: hotplug
Version: 0.0.20040329-25
Severity: normal

After upgrading hotplug to the version in Unstable my wireless card no
longer connects to the router.

I have a Cisco Aironet 340. This normally works without problems on my
IBM Thinkpad 50e. However, the above problem began to appear a few weeks
ago following a routine dist-upgrade. I spent a long time looking for a
bug in wireless-tools, without success. I therefore made a test
installation of Debian Stable in a spare partition and tried selectively
upgrading packages. Hotplug broke the wireless connection; putting this
package on hold allows me to upgrade things normally.

Bug#336302:

2005-11-16 Thread Anthony Campbell
OK, I think I have now discovered what the problem is. It is arising
from hotplug.

I made a test installation of Stable on a spare partition and upgraded
hotplug; it broke the wireless connection. I reinstalled Debian and told
wajig to hold hotplug, after which I did a dist-upgrade. Everything
continued to work correctly. I have now done the same on my "real"
installation of Debian and things still work.

I shall therefore submit a bug report for hotplug.

Quoting Policy 7.6:

Build-Depends, Build-Conflicts
The Build-Depends and Build-Conflicts fields must be satisfied when
any of the following targets is invoked: build, clean, binary,
binary-arch, build-arch, build-indep and binary-indep.

Failing to do so causes problems:

$ apt-src upgrade

Bug#340464: /usr/share/perl/5.8.4/Text/Wrap.pod: Unexpand spelled as unexapand in Text::Wrap docs

2005-11-23 Thread Anthony DeRobertis

Package: perl-doc
Version: 5.8.4-8
Severity: minor
File: /usr/share/perl/5.8.4/Text/Wrap.pod

into tabs. If you do not want tabs in your results, set
C<$Text::Wrap::unexapand> to a false value. Likewise if you do not
   ^

Notice the extra "a" in unexApand. Checking the actual perl code, this
seems to be a documentation error.
