The part above is my gut feeling, not the work of -legal. However, I feel
that it is the only sane interpretation. If you write a free library that
is not yet used by any programs, it is free. If the first program using
your library is non-free, is your library suddenly non-free? That would
be nonsense. However, this is only my opinion, and I am sure that the
good people on -legal will happily tell me if they think I'm wrong.

Since there are free drivers, however, the whole discussion is moot.

Take care,

I believe the ndiswrapper page itself has links to GPL'd drivers.

It's not unusable without non-free software; it will happily load into
the kernel and provide an ndis interface in the linux kernel. Please
see the various other threads that were on this same topic.

Due to recent changes in the php4 packages, your package has become
uninstallable
in sid (as of today's dinstall run, installing php4_4:4.3.10-3). We are now
building php4 with "Zend Thread Safety" which both changes the ABI and changes
the directory that extensions should be installed into.

To build a new package, you need to do three things:

1) build-dep on "php4-dev (>= 4:4.3.10-3)" (you can pull it from incoming to get
a head start. The buildds already do)
2) ensure that your phpapi dependency has "-zts" tacked to the end of it.
for examples on how to do so, see the debian/rules in php4-pgsql_3:4.3.10-1
3) Make sure that your extension installs to the correct directory
   (you do use `php-config --extension-dir`, don't you?)

That should be it.

Due to the simplicity and non-intrusiveness of these changes, if I don't see
uploads in the next 24 hours, I will happily NMU to fix the affected packages.

... Adam Conrad

(PS: Yes, this does have the blessing of at least one Release Manager)

Bug#296845: phpmyadmin: new upstream release addresses several security problems

2005-02-24 Thread Andre Tomt
Package: phpmyadmin
Version: 3:2.6.1-1
Severity: critical
Tags: security

New upstream version addresses several file include and XSS issues; see
http://securityreason.com/adv/phpmyadmin_2.6.1_remote_file_inclusion_and_xss_cxib8o3.4.txt

Also it may be worth considering switching register_globals to Off in
/usr/share/phpmyadmin/.htaccess - it should have been safe for phpmyadmin for
1-2 years already. This would also have stopped some of the XSS issues that
popped up this time..

Bug#296514: Cervisia license issues

2005-02-24 Thread Ben Burton

Hi.

Currently cervisia is licensed under the QPL. As the maintainer of
kdesdk in debian, I am unfortunately faced with having to remove
cervisia from the debian distribution since the QPL does not meet with
debian's free software guidelies. Of course this is debian's decision,
but nevertheless it seems worth bringing up the two specific issues that
concern us:

  Choice of Law:

The "Choice of Law" section states that disputes will be settled by
Oslo City Court. This is problematic since it requires recipients of
the software to travel to Oslo if a dispute should arise.

  6c:

Clause 6c requires that the recipient provide any modifications or
linked applications to the original software developer upon request.
This is problematic for a number of reasons, including requiring
recipients to identify themselves and to keep archives of their own
software for an indefinite amount of time in case the cervisia authors
  should make such a request.

For a somewhat better summary of the issues that make these two clauses
problematic, see the draft overview at
http://lists.debian.org/debian-legal/2004/07/msg00157.html
and the subsequent thread.

Given these issues, is it possible to consider altering the licensing
for cervisia in any way? Possibilities are as follows:

1. Make exceptions that deal with these two clauses. This was done by
the ocaml developers for similar reasons. Their changes were as
follows:

- Replace "choice of law" with "choice of venue". Specifically, they
replaced that clause with "This license is governed by the Laws of
France", without requiring any specific venue for resolving disputes.

- Add the following exception:

"As a special exception to the Q Public Licence, you may develop
application programs, reusable components and other software items
that link with the original or modified versions of the Compiler and
are not made available to the general public, without any of the
additional requirements listed in clause 6c of the Q Public licence."

2. Alternatively it might be worth considering a dual license for cervisia,
similar to what Trolltech has done with Qt.

I'm CCing this message to [EMAIL PROTECTED], which is the bug that
was filed requesting the removal of cervisia from debian. If this CC
could be preserved it would be appreciated. I have also CCed the three
primary authors for cervisia; apologies if you get this twice.

Thanks,

Ben.

This message describes multiple security holes in armagetron:
http://marc.theaimsgroup.com/?l=3Dbugtraq&m=3D110811699206052&w=3D2
Bugs: A] crash caused by big descriptor ID (CAN-2005-0369)
  B] crash caused by big claim_id (CAN-2005-0369)
C] socket unreacheable through empty packet (CAN-2005-0370)
D] fake players temporary freeze (CAN-2005-0371)

It's not clear whether the crashes allow for executing arbetrary code or
whether this is limited to a denial of service attack. Also, if it's right
that upstream is no longer supporting it, we may need to patch it ourselves
or drop the package.

Please reference the CAN numbers in any changelog entries fixing these hole=

The abuse-sdl package (along with dependent packages) has already been
removed from testing as a result of this bug.

Uploading a package that will FTBFS on 64-bit archs instead of building
broken packages is a reasonable fix for the release-criticality of this bug;
it also requires the approval/intervention of an ftp-master to remove the

Once this is done the bug should be downgraded to important, which is the
normal severity for non-RC portability bugs.

Bug#295294: splitting different security issues for armagetron

2005-02-24 Thread Andreas Bombe
clone 295294 -1
retitle -1 armagetron server DOS by fake players (CAN-2005-0371)
retitle 295294 multiple security holes (CAN-2005-0370 CAN-2005-0369)
thanks

I'm splitting this security bug report as the crashes as everything is
fixed except for the last DOS attack so that I can put that in the
changelog. And maybe the pure DOS bug can be reduced in severity.

Hi,

Your package is failing to build it's documentation in a clean
chroot. I get the following error:
! LaTeX Error: File `geometry.sty' not found.

This is because you do not have a Build-Depends(-Indep) for
tetex-extra.

Bug#296839: unace: multiple buffer overflows and directory traversal bugs

2005-02-24 Thread Ulf Härnhammar
Subject: unace: multiple buffer overflows and directory traversal bugs
Package: unace
Version: 1.2b-2
Severity: grave
Justification: user security hole
Tags: security patch

I have found multiple security vulnerabilities in unace.

There are two buffer overflows when extracting, testing or listing
specially prepared ACE archives. They are caused by wrong usage of
strncpy() with the third parameter coming from the archive. In both
cases, the attacker controls the EIP register.

There are also two buffer overflows when (a) dealing with long (>15600
characters) command line arguments for archive names, and (b) when
preparing a string for printing Ready for next volume messages.

Furthermore, there are directory traversal bugs when extracting ACE
archives. They are both of the absolute ("/etc/nologin") and the relative
("../../../../../../../etc/nologin") type.

All buffer overflows have the identifier CAN-2005-0160, and the directory
traversal bugs have the identifier CAN-2005-0161.

I have attached some test archives and a patch.

Which stale fasls are you talking about? Fasls distributed with the
sbcl package? It's fairly common for SBCL versions to be incompatible
with previous version fasl's, but I wouldn't consider that a bug with
SBCL unless the sbcl package itself included stale fasls.

Bug#296662: unverified report

2005-02-24 Thread Matthew Palmer
tag 296662 unreproducible
thanks

Naturally, you verified that the bug exists in the Debian packaged version
of IRM before you submitted the bug report, in which case you can give me
the recipe you used to exploit it in the Debian environment.

I had no luck in making this bug appear -- for me, there was always a bind
failure and a crash. When making the patch upstream, I had to go on
second-hand reports from others as to whether the bug was fixed. I
personally have yet to verify the existence of this bug with my own fingers.

Ah, this is why I didn't see this NMU in unstable.

Where does your policy suggest that ou shouldn't close bugs in the
changelog?

Don't you know that bugs closed in the changelog of the NMU are not
closed but correctly tagged as fixed?

I didn't know about this and this makes my bug void.

Where can I find DFSG-free drivers using ndiswrapper?

Did Debian change it's mind recently?

It used to be consensus on debian-legal that software that is currently
unusable without non-free software has to go to contrib.

And even on linux-kernel where people are much less dogmatic than on
debian-legal (e.g. regarding firmware) it's usually agreed that
interfaces like exported symbols that are not used by any free software
but only by non-free software aren't OK. It was really a surprise for me
if debian-legal would agree that interfaces that are currently only used
by non-free software were suitable for Debian main.

please find the patch he provided for a Debian fork which also applies

That is exactly what AC_PREREQ(2.50) does. apache2 already Build-Depends on
autoconf which in sid and sarge means 2.50 (actually 2.59) - although
perhaps there should be a versioned Build-Depends.

The problem occurs if you install autoconf2.13 at the same time (which was
what I had but didn't realise). It diverts /usr/bin/autoconf to
autoconf2.50 and replaces it with a script which does some heuristics to try
to guess which version is required - and most often selects 2.13 (as in the
case of apache2). One of the checks is to look for an AC_PREREQ line so by
adding that, the wrapper will indeed run autoconf2.50.

Bug#292673: additional info

2005-02-24 Thread David Mosberger
While there hasn't been any discussion for glibc bugzilla report #685
[1], private communication with one of the glibc maintainers indicates
that this issue is not considered to be a glibc bug because,
officially, glibc supports only one thread library at a time:
LinuxThreads _or_ NPTL, but not both at the same time. Of course,
every distro I know of ships both NPTL and LinuxThreads and the
apparently accepted workaround appears to be to use the ld.so that was
built for NPTL rather than the one that was built for LinuxThreads
(more precisely, the ld.so should be used which uses larger thread
descriptors). Thus, I strongly suspect Debian should do the same.
Since this bug results in memory corruption that can be very hard to
track down, I hope this can be fixed quickly. As a temporary
workaround, just doing:

# mv /lib/tls/ld-2.3.2.so /lib/

should cure the problem.

Thanks,

Yep; pretty much what I was going to say. There are free (gpl'd)

I ran into one problem while testing it, but didn't have the time to
investigate yet.

A subshell forked in eval or a dot file within an or list does not
return, causing the parent shell to block:

$ ./build-tmp/src/dash -exc 'eval "(false; false)" || echo 1'
+ eval (false; false)
+ false
+ echo 1
1
(does not return)

$ cat >t <<\EOT
(false; false)
EOT
$ ./build-tmp/src/dash -exc '. ./t || echo 1'
+ . ./t
+ false
+ echo 1
1
(does not return)

Regards, Gerrit.

Hi,

Your package is failing to build it's documentation in a clean

This is because you do not have a Build-Depends(-Indep) for

Hey!

You are probably using a buggy version of libgnomedb2-3. As you can see
here:

http://packages.debian.org/cgi-bin/search_contents.pl?word=libgnomedb-2.so.3&searchmode=searchfiles&case=insensitive&version=unstable&arch=i386

The libgnomedb2-3 does provide the files you're missing. Make sure
you're not using a version from experimental.

Thanks!

111MB of additional disk space just to upgrade my packages.
So I looked package by package to see wich one was going to use such space.

And I found:

The following packages will be upgraded:

Right.
My question is. Why is it taking so much space just to upgrade the package? I
am not installing it. I am just doing an upgrade.

# apt-cache policy xserver-xfree86

I have release -10 installed and I am going to upgrade to release -12. Did it
change so much to use 111MB of additional disk?

Thank you
Nelson

I'll upload a new version. If you want to update the French document,
please send me a patch. I have put the English phrasing there instead
of the French. I think I put it at the correct position.

These bugs were not source-level bugs; they appear to have been artifacts
of the i386 buildd environment. The packages uploaded for other
architectures (at least so far) do not exhibit this problem.

Joshua Kwan has kindly performed a binary-only NMU to resolve these issues.

Changes:
 xfree86 (4.3.0.dfsg.1-12.0.1) unstable; urgency=3Dmedium
 .
   * Binary non-maintainer upload.
   * The i386 build of -12 appears to not have been stripped at all, so the
resultant packages are colossal. Rebuild in a clean environment.

Closing these bugs.

Bug#296800: Missing library dependency

2005-02-24 Thread Stephen Touset
Package: glade-gnome-2
Version: 2.6.8-2
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ glade-2
glade-2: error while loading shared libraries: libgnomedb-2.so.3: cannot
open shared object file: No such file or directory
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$

An ls shows two files in /usr/lib:

/usr/lib/libgnomedb-2.so.1 -> libgnomedb-2.so.1.1.0
/usr/lib/libgnomedb-2.so.1.1.0

From rom apt, glade-gnome-2 depends on libgnomedb2-3, which is installed and
is providing those two libraries. Symlinking libgnomedb-2.so.1 to
libgnomedb-2.so.3 seems to work as a temporary workaround.

Serious? Come on...

update-inetd is supposed to be deep-frozen, but I will consider
anchoring the regexp in the next upload.

Bug#296795: netbase: update-inetd removes wrong entry, more DebianNet.pm problems

2005-02-24 Thread Roderick Schertler
Package: netbase
Version: 4.19
Severity: critical
Tags: patch
Justification: causes serious data loss

When I upgrade ipopd an unrelated (custom-made) entry in my inetd.conf
is being deleted. The entry is

pop3 stream tcp nowait nobody /usr/sbin/tcpd /usr/sbin/stunnel -c -r
mail.argon.org:995

and it gets deleted when ipopd.postrm runs

update-inetd --remove pop3s

due to a bug in DebianNet. In tracing this down I found and fixed these
problems in DebianNet.pm:

- add_service(), remove_service(), and scan_entries() weren't properly
anchoring the service search, so they could all match where they
  shouldn't have.

- There's no need to set the umask before doing a chmod() because
chmod() isn't affected by the umask. Additionally, leaving the
process with a 0 umask is not safe. I fixed this by removing the
umask() call. (A better fix would be to locally set a umask
before calling open() and not do the chmod() at all, but I wanted
  to keep my changes minimal.)

- The module causes some use of initialized value warnings.

Here's a demonstration of all these problems, and my fix for them.
After that is the patch. I'll also attach these files so you can get
at them without having to cut/paste them out of the main part of this
message.

Hi,

Latest version of php4-snmp causes apache to segfault on startup (undetected by
apachectl which exit cleanly). Commenting out extension=snmp.so in
/etc/php4/apache/php.ini is a workaround, but php scripts runned by apache via
the php4 module won't have snmp support.

Here his an strace -f apachectl (relevant part only) :

thanks

I'm downgrading severity for this bug as it is not reproducible and thus
depends on logfiles.

Sarg is not perfect and upstream is fixing segmentation faults with
every release (see changelog for 2.0.4), so it's probable that this bug
will stay open for a long time without any deterministic evidence of
what triggered this particular SEGV.

If you see the segmentation fault again, please make a copy of the squid
logfile and mail them with the report.

Regards,

If you are using Xandros 2, you have downloaded an incorrect version
for your system. This is the problem you get. Use a tool like Synaptic
or apt-get (under x-terminal, like "konsole") to download and install
packages in your system. But if you are using Xandros 1, your problem is
related to repositories. You need download all qcad dependencies which
you can install in your system through these tools before explained.

Bug#296723: ndiswrapper should go to contrib

This was just recently discussed, and I believe the consensus was that
there are free drivers, so there is no problem. And frankly, even if
there wasn't a single free driver out there, ndiswrapper's purpose is to
provide an NDIS interface for the linux kernel. It does this whether or
not there are drivers available, so it's a non-argument.

See also bug #289065

Take care.

Andres, I have not just closed this bug, as I wanted to give you a

I've tried that, and I have the same problem as I do with
2.6.8-10-amd64-k8-smp :(

I'll do that if the BIOS update isn't helpful.

Package: avifile-xvid-plugin
Version: 1:0.7.38.20030710-1.1
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

Greetings --

The recent NMU of avifile failed to properly build this package; the
package doesn't include the plugin library file
(/usr/lib/avifile-0.7/xvid.so). The same problem is present in
avifile-divx-plugin vis-a-vis the file /usr/lib/avifile-0.7/divx4.so.

The problems stem from the fact that avifile should build-depend on the
divx and xvid codec libraries, but no such packages exists in Debian
(and considering that XviD is GPL, I find this odd (I suppose it's
some silly patent dispute or other...)).

Thanks,
Algis R.

Package: avifile-player
Version: 0.7.33.20030314-1
Severity: serious
Justification: Combination of versions which led to crashing X

Folks,

I'm not sure I'm being particularly useful here. However, using a
certain 1.3G .avi file (which I can't attach :-)) when I said

$ aviplay dat.avi

the next thing I knew was that I got thrown back into textmode, and
then after that kdm restarted. I still have the .avi file so I can
answer questions if you wish.

I haven't isolated the bug or anything more beyond knowing that it
crashed my X. If this bug report is not particularly useful, please
feel free to trash it. I apologise if I'm wasting your time. Thanks
much,

-ans.

I attempted to have Xandros install the deb package qcad_1-1.4.7-2_!386.deb
that I had downloaded from www.debian.org

I received the following error message:

Since you only requested a single operation it is extremely likely that

Bug#296623: Acknowledgement (kernel-image-2.6.8-amd64: 2.6.8 kernel images panic on quad Opteron box)

2005-02-24 Thread Alex Page
Further information:

The system in question is a Celestica A8440 [1].

If I pass "nomce" to the kernel boot options, to bypass Machine Check
Exceptions, then I can almost get the kernel-image-2.6.8-10-amd64-k8-smp
to a working state. It hangs on loading the "Real Time Clock Driver
v1.12" but I can bypass this with Ctrl-C. It hangs again on "Setting the
System Clock using the Hardware Clock as reference", but again I can
Ctrl-C past this and get to a login prompt.

Unsurprisingly, the machine then hangs on shutdown at "Saving the System
Clock time to the Hardware Clock".

Hmm, the only BIOS option I was able to find that was ACPI related was
"ACPI SRAT Table" and it seemed to make no difference. The kernel
options for nolapic, noapic and noacpi all failed to make a difference
too. Thank you for your suggestions.

Package: libcurl3
Version: 7.13.0-1
Severity: grave
Tags: patch
Justification: user security hole

iDefense discovered a buffer overflow in NTLM authentication that may lead
to arbitrary code execution. This is CAN-2005-0490. Woody is not affected,
as it doesn't contain the vulnerable NTLM code. (It's not listed on the
Not-Vulnerable list yet, though)

Upstream's patch to address this issue is attached, I didn't resync it
against the Debian package, because all this internal to-7.11 patching
seems, umm, scary.

The advisory can be found at
http://www.idefense.com/application/poi/display?id=202&type=vulnerabilities

There's another buffer overflow in Kerberos handling, but I doesn't seems
to be enabled in debian/rules, but please double check this.

Cheers,
Moritz

Bug#291559: Problem solved for me

2005-02-24 Thread Matthias Haller
Linking capi4hylafax staticaly against libcapi20 included in the
isdnutils_3.3.0.20041110-1 package solved the problem for me. So maybe
it's a bug in the actual libcapi20.

Bug#265399: blah

2005-02-24 Thread Andres Salomon
Upstream has actually rejected my patch to special-case overquota as
temp errors, and treat the rest as perm errors; instead, they've
included code that always throws a temp error if mail delivery fails..

yes, i know and agree about the scary patch. i'm going to remove support
for libcurl2, it was used only by discover. discover now doesn't need
libcurl2 any more.
