Bug#298688: CAN-2005-0683: Disclosure of installation path

2005-03-09 Thread Stefan Fritsch
Package: phpbb2
Severity: grave
Tags: security
Justification: user security hole

A remote user can directly access 'phpBB/db/oracle.php' to cause the system
to display an error message that discloses the installation path.

See
http://securitytracker.com/alerts/2005/Mar/1013377.html

Bug#298690: CAN-2005-0673: cross-site scripting attack (in usercp_register.php)

2005-03-09 Thread Stefan Fritsch
Package: phpbb2
Severity: grave
Tags: security
Justification: user security hole

A remote user can submit a specially crafted signature via a private
message that, when viewed by a target user, will cause arbitrary
scripting code to be executed by the target user's browser. The code
will originate from the site running the phpBB software and will run
in the security context of that site. As a result, the code will be
able to access the target user's cookies (including authentication
cookies), if any, associated with the site, access data recently
submitted by the target user via web form to the site, or take
actions on the site acting as the target user.

Bug#298692: CAN-2005-0687: format string vulnerability

2005-03-09 Thread Stefan Fritsch
Package: hashcash
Severity: grave
Tags: security
Justification: user security hole

Format string vulnerability in Hashcash 1.x allows remote attackers
to cause a denial of service (memory consumption) and possibly execute
arbitrary code via format string specifiers in a reply address, which
is not properly handled when printing the header.

Bug#294501: can reproduce this bug

2005-03-09 Thread Carsten Wolff
after upgrading sarge yesterday, wich resulted in a new apache and php4 for
me, apache crashes as long as I keep imap.so in php.ini.
It's interesting, that apache-ssl does not suffer from that. Only apache.

An strace ends right after reading the configuration-files. None of the
suggestions in this thread apply. No uncommon library-versions, no ulimit.
Just a recent sarge on an x86 machine.

Running apache from gdb ends exactly the same way as Matt Brown posted it
already. And, also like Matt Brown mentioned, if apache is started with
mod-ssl, the segfault vanishes.

Bug#297796: emacs21: FTBFS: timestamp skew issues.

2005-03-09 Thread Jérôme Marant
Quoting Rob Browning [EMAIL PROTECTED]:

By voodoo magic do you mean the old approach, the possible md5
 approach, or both?

The combination of both.

If you mean the old approach, then I obviously don't see it to be as
cut and dry as you do. To be fair, the only reason the current code
broke is because the relative timestamps for files in the debian diff
are unpredictable, and I didn't think about that. Of course, that
means that *any* files mentioned in the debian patch are potentially
trouble as far as make is concerned. Without this problem, it would
have been quite correct to have autofiles.diff depend on the files
that may influence its contents (i.e. the *.dpatch files).

Of course if you just mean that the .md5 approach would be voodoo
magic, then I'll agree that it's not completely straightforward.
Though to the extent I've thought it through so far, I haven't come up
 with any problems.

What I don't understand is why you think that modifying configure.in
and regenerating configure cannot be considered as part of a
regular dpatch. Or maybe am I missing something?

As an example, the amd64 port needs configure.in to be changed. I
can the see the following scenario:
- run dpatch-edit-patch
- apply changes
- run autoconf: this changes configure
- exit from dpatch-edit-patch

Why wouldn't this work?

Why is it better to gather all changes to the configure script in
a single separate dpatch rather than spreading all changes along
with the patch it belongs to?

In any case, even if we go with the only update when requested
 dpatch-edit-patch approach that I think you're advocating, I'd still
want a target for it so we can just invoke that when needed,
i.e. something (only very roughly) like this:

   update-autofiles-diff:
   # rm aclocal.m4 so it doesn't confuse newer autoconfs, but touch it
   # so ./Makefile won't be upset if it's not recreated (b/c not
 needed).
   (dpatch-edit-patch ... autofiles.dpatch
 cd DPATCHDIR \
 rm -f aclocal.m4 \
 touch aclocal.m4 \
 aclocal \
 autoconf
 exit)

(...which is really not that much different than what we're already
doing, but I'll agree that handling everything with dpatch would be a
bit cleaner, and if it works right, then I'm fine with that.)

It would be kind of better, yes.

So it seems like the *only* thing we're in potential disagreement
about is whether we should automatically invoke this target *iff*
there's a solid way to automatically determine when doing so would be
 appropriate.

I think so.

IMO, creating a whole copy of the tree and diffing at build-time is
not worth the effort. You have the final word, anyway :P

It's not only not worth the effort, but it should never have happened
under normal circumstances. As I mentioned, the only reason it did in
this case was because I didn't consider the problem presented by the
timestamps of files in the debian diff and so came up with a broken
 solution.

I almost all cases, changes to 'configure.in' only change 'configure'.
In the remaining cases, changes only happen in the toplevel of the
tree. I don't think it is unreasonnable to avoid duplicating the
whole tree, isn't it?

The way things were intended to work, the autofiles.diff should only
have been re-built if you changed a relevant file (i.e. *.dpatch), or
if you manually requested a rebuild during prepare-release.

I understood that.

The installation path in Debian is always /usr/share/phpbb2/site, people
don't need to go to this URL to know this.

Knowing the installation path is as big a security hole as knowing ls is
in /bin/ls.

Format string vulnerability in Hashcash 1.x allows remote attackers
to cause a denial of service (memory consumption) and possibly execute
arbitrary code via format string specifiers in a reply address, which
is not properly handled when printing the header.

Hi Stefan

Thanks for the report. I've already checked, and hashcash 1.13, which
is what is in Debian, is not vulnerable.

Bug#298731: jetty: Reference to servlet2.4 schema affects Jetty startup

2005-03-09 Thread Jay Lawrence
Package: jetty
Version: 5.0.0-2
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

The webdefault.xml references:
 http://java.sun.com/xml/ns/j2ee/web-app_2_4.xsd

Which in turn references a few other schema documents ... including
 http://www.ibm.com/webservices/xsd/j2ee_web_services_client_1_1.xsd

Unfortunately our friends at IBM appear to have removed this document.
:-/

This causes an error in loading configuration files of Jetty and
therefore Jetty fails to start properly.

Workarounds include:
 adding: org.mortbay.xml.XmlParser.NotValidating=true
 to start.config

which bypasses the schema validation which is on by default

Or
 include libservlet2.4-java - which I don't believe exists

Or
jetty 5.1.3 appears to have the correct schema documents onboard in its
 source.

However - users of the stock jetty deb packages will get a nostart
situation (or at least I think so - we tried several purge and
reinstalls - same result each time)

log snapshot follows:

Bug#297796: emacs21: FTBFS: timestamp skew issues.

2005-03-09 Thread Rob Browning
Jérôme Marant [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes:

What I don't understand is why you think that modifying configure.in
and regenerating configure cannot be considered as part of a
regular dpatch. Or maybe am I missing something?

As an example, the amd64 port needs configure.in to be changed. I
can the see the following scenario:
 - run dpatch-edit-patch
 - apply changes
 - run autoconf: this changes configure
 - exit from dpatch-edit-patch

 Why wouldn't this work?

Why is it better to gather all changes to the configure script in
a single separate dpatch rather than spreading all changes along
with the patch it belongs to?

Because IMO modifications to configure.in (and any other autotools
related files, like Makefile.in for automake enabled packages, for
example) should be made in the .dpatch relevant to the overall change
in question. For example, the mailspool patch required changes to a
number of files in the source tree *and* to configure.in. I think
these configure.in changes should go in mailspool.dpatch, since that's
why they're there.

The changes in autofiles.diff are only supposed to be the result of
whatever the autools change when run on a fully patched tree, and of
course that's not something you can predict without knowing all the
modifications that all of the .dpatch files have made to configure.in,
to any Makefile.ins (when automake is involved), and to any other
files that the currently installed version of the autotools might pay
attention to.

You could even imagine a foo.dpatch that adds libtool support to a
tree that didn't have it. This is going to cause a bunch of new
files/dirs to appear in the autofiles.diff, and exactly what appears
is going to depend on the version of libtool involved, the libtool
macros used in foo.dpatch, etc.

Also, as I mentioned before, part of the issue here is that I'd really
like to have a solution that's general enough to use with other dpatch
using packages, even ones that also use automake, libtool, etc.

I almost all cases, changes to 'configure.in' only change 'configure'.
In the remaining cases, changes only happen in the toplevel of the
 tree.

As suggested above, I don't think it's safe to presume that changes to
configure.in only change configure. Even if that's true now, it might
not be true for future versions of autoconf, and it's certainly not
true for packages where automake is involved. Actually, it might not
even be true in the current emacs21 package since we use aclocal, and
I suppose it's possible that aclocal might change what it writes to
aclocal.m4 (if anything) from version to version.

I don't think it is unreasonnable to avoid duplicating the whole
 tree, isn't it?

That's what we do all the time when running dpatch-edit-patch, so I'm
not sure why it would be a problem when we're trying to capture an
autofiles.dpatch.

Bug#292401: kdm_config override /etc/kde3/kdm/kdmrc which is a conffile

2005-03-09 Thread Christopher Martin
severity 292401 important
stop

Hello,

The conclusion of discussion with the Release Managers on #debian-release
was that this bug is really annoying but not RC. They conceded the
(unintentional and in fact hitherto unnoticed) lack of clarity in
sarge_rc_policy, but don't feel that this merits enforcing the strictest
interpretation given the obvious practical difficulties, and recommend the
bug be lowered to important.

Cheers,
Christopher Martin

[12:46] Thucydides Could one of the RMs evaluate bug #292401, and advise
on the different interpretations of Sarge RC-ness contained therein?
[12:47] aba Thucydides: if the title is true, it is RC.
[12:48] neuro no it isn't
[12:48] Kamion doesn't seem RC to me; very annoying but not RC
[12:48] aba eh, moment
[12:48] neuro the rc policy is that the package _maintainer scripts_ don't
do that to conffiles
[12:48] * aba misunderstood the title
[12:48] aba neuro: agreed.
[12:48] Kamion aba: I think you read it as kdm.config, rather than
kdm_config?
[12:48] * aba goes back to the sick list
[12:48] aba Kamion: yes.
[12:49] aba I read it as $package overwrites conffile, not $program
overwrites conffile - which is obviously quite a different thing.
[12:49] Kamion although Bill is right that sarge_rc_policy goes a bit
further than that
[12:49] Kamion which is interesting since I don't think I've noticed that
text before
[12:50] aba well, the question is: What is an editor? I think I might
qualify kdm_config as an specialiced editor, but - well, it's really quite
annoying.
[12:50] Kamion hmm. I think the current letter of our release policy is in
fact that it's RC, but I would be inclined to leave this one alone for
sarge now unless it's easy to fix
[12:51] Kamion depending, as aba says, on exactly what you call an editor
[12:51] Thucydides it's not an easy fix, I'm afraid
[12:51] neuro it's not easy to fix.
[12:51] Kamion seems unlikely that it would be
[12:51] Kamion I think we should modify the release policy to replace an
editor with a program designed to edit the file or some such
[12:52] neuro it might be easy to fix if kde used certain gnome libraries
to read the conf file...but I'm sure that fix wouldn't be acceptable to
most.
[12:52] aba I would tend to downgrade it to annyoing^Wimportant.
[12:52] jvw Kamion: well, the program might be designed to edit the
conffile, but it doesn't clearly advertise itself as such -- from an
unsuspecting user POV, it modifies some 'registry', rather than a real
conffile
[12:53] Kamion yeah, but that's different from some automated process
running it without any user request at all
[12:53] jvw but yeah, pragmatic thinking yields to make this bug not RC
[12:53] aba (we might even consider it as quite annoying, which also
important)
[12:53] neuro jvw: if the user is that unsuspecting, they're not going to
be using a text editor on the file, either.
[12:54] neuro or be answering anything other than enter to dpkg prompts
[12:58] Thucydides Thanks for clarifying. I'll set the bug back to
important.
[12:59] Kamion feel free to quote this conversation

Adventure.ttf's metadata simply says (c)2000 Neale Davidson and does
not include a license. debian/copyright also doesn't talk about the
font.

Neale Davidson's website, www.protoformproject.com, is down, but
according to the archive.org[1] it used to say: These fonts are
released as freeware. They may not be sold, manipulated, edited, or
redistributed without direct written consent by Neale Davidson. They may
be used without royalties for any reasonable purpose.

So adventure.ttf should be removed from the package.

Version: 1:2.9.0-12
Severity: wishlist

I lose one day figuring out why my drivers were segfaulting when registring
in i2c system. I finally notice that the size of struct adapter is not
the same between the headers chipped by the kernel-header and the one
given by i2c-source (I guess that i2c-source is the source package for
this version of the drivers).

So, I don't know what is the Debian policy about that problem, but I
wish at least something like an advertisement when installing such a
different driver from debian stock kernel ...

I guess that I'm not the only one that can get this kind of problem ...

If you need more info, I should be able to quickly answer.

Regards.

Benoit.

Bug#298771: buffer overflow in dissect_a11_radius() (CAN-2005-0699)

2005-03-09 Thread Joey Hess
Package: ethereal
Version: 0.10.9-1
Severity: grave
Tags: security

There is remote buffer overflow vulnerability in Ethereal dissector for
CDMA2000 A11 packets. Vulnerability is located in dissect_a11_radius()
function
in packet-3g-a11.c used for RADIUS authentication dissection. Number of bytes
that will be copied from packet to buffer in stack is taken from packet
itself.
16 bytes are reserved for that buffer, and string length can be up to 256
bytes
(unsigned char), so is possible to overflow local variables and return
address.

http://www.securityfocus.com/archive/1/392659

A fixed version should be released upstream on March 10th. I think a fix
is already available in upstream svn, based on this page:

http://www.securityfocus.com/bid/12759/solution/

Bug#298688: CAN-2005-0683: Disclosure of installation path

2005-03-09 Thread browaeys . alban
Hi
from the report http://securitytracker.com/alerts/2005/Mar/1013377.html
this look like a beginner error.

The error log is from php not phpBB !

! On a production system error logs on the browser output have to
be disabled !
It is lije keeping development backdoors on a production release
...

If debian php does it by default , please reassign the bug to it
but i don't remenber it doing it , can you check ?

At least the maintainer his right in that it has nothing to do
with phpBB.

Thanks
Alban

No, unfortunately I don't have a php-installation where I can check
it. I just went through the new CANs.

Anyway, I don't know what I was thinking when I filed the report.
Disclosure of the installation path is of course not an issue in

Package: fontconfig
Version: 2.2.3-4
Severity: grave

Hello,

when I configure fontconfig to not use bitmap fonts, I get invisible
fonts using any xft application (gvim, flash plugin, firefox) when
Courier is beeing requested. It is even worse:

urxvt -fn xft:Courier
Floating point exception

strace shows me that it happens directly after some font providing
courier is beeing accessed, eg.
/usr/share/fonts/truetype/ms/coue1257.fon
Even if I remove one of the courier providers, it crashes on another
one.

If I enable bitmap fonts, I get some ugly fonts in Xft using
applications (except of urxvt, this one still crashes).

I cannot explain that. Courier New looks fine, and fonts.conf contains
alias
familyCourier/family
acceptfamilyCourier New/family/accept
/alias

I have only my truetype fonts from windows, bitstream-vera-sans and few
others.

 root @debian:/usr/share/fonts/truetype$ ls
arhangai dustin kochi ttf-bitstream-vera
arphicfonts.cache-1 ms ttf-xfree86-nonfree
baekmuk freefont openoffice ttf-xfree86-nonfree-syriac

Bug#298028: swig: PHP generation is broken with -zts enabled (and it is now the default in sid)

2005-03-09 Thread John Lenz
I would just add a warning to SWIG, so that if it is run with the -php
argument it outputs a warning like PHP wrapper support is currently broken
with Debian. Please see Sourceforge bug whatever (provide a link maybe
too).

I would also say since it is only a problem with threading if a user really
needed to use SWIG on something, they could recompile apache and recompile
php themselves and then still use the SWIG that would be in debian, just
ignoring the error.

Thus this SWIG package is usable, even from a php standpoint. Lastly, not
very many people use SWIG for php... php doesn't even support multiple
modules sharing type information (%import).

John

Bug#294717: gpsbabel build problems: at least partly due to rounding errors

2005-03-09 Thread Lars Wirzenius
With regard to the test program I mailed earlier: it produces identical
results on i386 as on hppa if -O or -O2 is given to gcc, but different
(and I think incorrect) results without optimization (-O0 or no option).
It was pointed out to me on IRC by Simon Richter that i386 computes
floating point with higher precision inside the FPU and registers than
what is stored to memory, so optimization avoids truncation of
intermediate results.

I'm still not capable of deducing how to fix this problem, not being
well versed with floating point math.

Since the errors seem to be rounding errors, and as such almost
inevitable unless extreme care is taken, it might be worthwhile to punt
on the issue and just disable the make check in debian/rules. This
allows the package to build everywhere, but it doesn't solve the real
problem.

(I'll probably stop butting in on this bug now, since I can't seem to do
anything actually useful.)

Bug#296977: gworkspace.app: GWorkspace doesn't start on a VNC 8bit display

2005-03-09 Thread Lars Wirzenius
well, it *might* work smoothly indeed, but the fact is that I'm accessing
a Sarge sys via a vnc session at 8bit, and all I got is:

2005-02-26 06:59:40.000 GWorkspace[31699] NOTE: Only one display per host
 fully supported.
 2005-02-26 06:59:40.000 GWorkspace[31699] WARNING - XGServer is unable to
use the fast algorithm for writing to an 8-bit display on this host - the
most likely reason being the StandardColormap RGB_BEST_MAP has not been
 installed.
 2005-02-26 06:59:40.000 GWorkspace[31699] Unrecognized color masks:
 0007:0038:00c0 8
2005-02-26 06:59:40.000 GWorkspace[31699] Please report this along with
details on your pixel format (ie. the four numbers above). (Or better yet,
implement it and send me a patch.)

which leaves me with no other choice but use anoter filemanager, hence the
 severity.

I suspect this is a bug in gnustep-back and not in gworkspace itself.
Please, could test with another GNUstep apps (via vnc too) ?

I tried it with an 8-bit X server running under qemu. The results were
pretty much identical: neither GWorkspace nor Mines (the two GNUstep
programs I tried) would run. When I configured it to be a 24-bit screen,
Mines would run without problems.

If I understand correctly, this means all or many GNUstep program don't
work at all with an 8-bit display. Personally, I don't think this is a
release critical problem, and possibly not even a bug, even though it is
obviously quite annoying if that's the only thing you've got. Thus, I
would think the best way would be to assign this bug to the appropriate
GNUstep base package and lowering its severity to normal.
