Bug#299161: libapache-mod-acct-mysql must be rebuilt against libmysqlclient12

2005-03-12 Thread Steve Langasek
Package: libapache-mod-acct-mysql
Version: 0.5-15
Severity: grave

Packages connected to apache, odbc, and scripting languages
(python/perl/php/ruby) are in the process of transitioning from
libmysqlclient10 to libmysqlclient12 for sarge. Because libmysqlclient
does not include versioned symbols, it is not possible for multiple
versions of this library to be loaded by a process without causing
segfaults. Since libapache-mod-acct-mysql will be loaded by apache
processes that may also have loaded libmysqlclient12, this is therefore
a grave bug in libapache-mod-acct-mysql.

Please rebuild libapache-mod-acct-mysql against libmysqlclient12 by
updating your build depends to point to libmysqlclient12-dev.

Ah, sorry for the false alarm -- I had an old version of libdbd-mysql-perl
installed locally, so it showed up as a reverse-dependency of
libmysqlclient10 still. And of course, you even sent me an email about this
when you uploaded... doh!

Bug#294895: [DPKG] emacsen-common package not configured before a2ps despite Depends

2005-03-12 Thread Steve Langasek
Scott,

Is it certain that this is a dpkg bug? I notice that the submitter's
typescript shows he was using apt 0.5.27 when upgrading, which was before
the Dpkg::MaxArgs setting was bumped to 1024 -- the first typescript shows a
total of 640 packages being upgraded, and the second typescript shows 281
packages not fully installed or removed, so perhaps this is a bad dpkg
invocation, not a bug in dpkg itself?

Package: libapache-mod-acct-mysql
Version: 0.5-15
Severity: grave

Packages connected to apache, odbc, and scripting languages
(python/perl/php/ruby) are in the process of transitioning from
libmysqlclient10 to libmysqlclient12 for sarge. Because libmysqlclient
does not include versioned symbols, it is not possible for multiple
versions of this library to be loaded by a process without causing
segfaults. Since libapache-mod-acct-mysql will be loaded by apache
processes that may also have loaded libmysqlclient12, this is therefore
a grave bug in libapache-mod-acct-mysql.

Please rebuild libapache-mod-acct-mysql against libmysqlclient12 by
updating your build depends to point to libmysqlclient12-dev.

Hi,
doctorj bans sablevm from the system for no good reason. What's the
problem when both are install concurrently, can't find the in the bug
report. If there are build problems then a build-conflict is more
apropriate.

Please rebuild goobox without the libhowl0 dependency since it's

goobox 0.9.90 (currently in incoming) already depends on newer gnomevfs

Some further investigation on this:

fontconfig builds fine if jade is installed but not if only openjade is
installed. So the real error here seems to be the openjade error, not
the segv in docbook-utils that is caused by it.

Since I don't know that much about the docbook SGML toolchain, I'm
unsure how to proceed: should fontconfig build-depend on jade? Or
is this a bug in openjade? Or really in docbook-utils?

Bug#299191: apache2-common: suexec sets incorrect gid and groups

2005-03-12 Thread Charles Stevenson
Package: apache2-common
Version: 2.0.53-5
Severity: grave
Justification: user security hole

I'm fairly certain this is specific to the MIPS port. I looked at the
source and did some tests and am a bit perplexed. I thought it was a
signedness issue, integer overflow I think they call it. In any case
here's the rundown. Apache is running as nobody/nogroup (65534/65534).
I was having some luser errors with a CGI script so I dropped a simple
command execution script in /usr/lib/cgi-bin/ to see if CGI worked in
general which it does. In any case I ran /usr/bin/id and noticed my gid
was wrong as well as my groups. I created a file just to ensure the
problem wasn't within id and did an ls on the file. It seems that it's a
problem with suexec itself. My box is slow as can be and I've just about
given up trying to build it from source and see for myself but I imagine
that perhaps this is built with a cross-compiler. And that somehow the
signedness is incured in this fashion. I did test getgrnam and it
returns correct information. Here's some output from my lil' script:

$ id
uid=65534(nobody) gid=1(daemon) groups=4294967295
$ touch /tmp/nobody_was_here
$ ls -l /tmp/nobody_was_here
-rw-r--r-- 1 nobody 4294967295 0 Mar 12 05:11 /tmp/nobody_was_here

Anyways this can in theory lead to some strange privelege elevation
given the gid of daemon. I chose grave since it seemed fitting although
in truth it's probably not a huge issue? There were no error logged.
Anyways if I can fix strace to work or get this to compile I might be
able to send a patch or more useful info. For now it's still running
configure... ;)

peace,
core

Bug#297181: auctex dont't install

2005-03-12 Thread Frank Küster
Hi Jean-Jacques,

we both forgot again to send copies to the bugnumber address. This is
just a copy of the mail I just sent you. Please send a copy to the bug
yourself when you answer.

That is quite interesting, because sid and sarge have the same auctex
version. So it must be something about interaction with another
package.

Hm, well, you didn't assume correctly. What I meant was

dpkg --configure auctex 2>&1 | tee auxtex-install.lg

Bug#299191: Not suexec

2005-03-12 Thread Charles Stevenson
Apparently I'm too tired to be sending bug reports ;-) It appears that
suexec is not involved. My Qube2 finally finished running configure. I
think the solution is in apache2.conf to use www-data for User and
Group. Fixed the problems here :) Sorry for the bother. I think it has
to do with "don't use Group #-1 on these systems!"

peace,
core

Bug#265021: How to proceed further?

2005-03-12 Thread Frank Lichtenheld
Hi.

This blosxom bug was upgraded to RC severity recently. Alfie commented
in the bug that it isn't easy to fix this and at the same time offer a
clean upgrade path from previous versions. He also added that this isn't
a woody->sarge upgrade bug since blosxom isn't present in woody.

Some thoughts on this:
 - Even if upgrades from woody->sarge aren't affected, this should
probably remain RC since 1) it would definetly occour on security
updates and 2) to have to fix the upgrade path for sarge->etch
upgrades sounds even worse than the current situation.
 - Wouldn't it be preferable to fix the bug correctly right now even
if this makes upgrades from the current version non-trivial since
at least the current version is in no stable release. Why postpone
   the breakage?
 - Without knowing anything about blosxom, the obvious solution seems
to be either 1) to move the files to /usr/lib or /usr/share and
then advise the user how to copy them if he wants to change them
or 2) move them to /etc and make them config files. Is this right?
(a simple "no" would suffice for me at this point indicating that
I need to learn more about the software)

Gruesse,

Hi, Martin. I had not tried this before, but I've tried it just now. The

and FreeSans.ttf, but it doesn't work with the font provided in Moodle.
Were you using Russian or Ukranian? Only these two languages using the
Optima font are the problem now.
When using Russian, I couldn't get survey graphs to display properly
using VeraSans, FreeSans or Bepa-Roman, but they do work fine with
the Optima that they currently include.

I've tried with both Ukranian and Russian. I have only tried the "Today's hits
on by " graph. When I've tried with Optima I've only got
'squares' instead of letters, with Bepa-Roman it has worked perfectly, like

Hi,

I had the problem that e.g. vserver-stats didn't work for me. On
checking it up, the build log proved that it is using syscall 273 for
that, instead of the really used one:

< aba> Bertl: if the configure script says: "checking for number of
syscall 'vserver'... 273/default" - is that a bad sign?
< Bertl> aba: yes
< aba> Bertl: with recompiling debians utils on my machine with a
   kernel, it works ..

This means that util-vserver doesn't work on powerpc (and probably also
not on any other !i386 architecture).

Cheers,
Andi

Several vulnerabilities were identified in MySQL, which may be exploited
by local attackers to execute arbitrary commands or obtain elevated
privileges.

- The first flaw is due to an insecure (predictable name) temporary file
creation with "CREATE TEMPORARY TABLE", which may be exploited by an
attacker that has "CREATE TEMPORARY TABLE" privileges to conduct symlink
  attacks.

- The second vulnerability is due to an arbitrary library injection
error and resides in the "udf_init()" function (sql_udf.cc), which may=20
be exploited by an attacker (with INSERT and DELETE privileges) to
load/execute a malicious library with MySQL privileges.

- The third flaw occurs when handling specially crafted "CREATE
FUNCTION" commands, which may be exploited by a malicious user (with
INSERT and DELETE privileges) to execute arbitrary code with MySQL
  privileges.

Stefano Di Paola discovered that it's possible to gain extended MySQL user
privileges by abusing the interaction between MySQL's CREATE FUNCTION
functionality and the libc. This only applies for authenticated users
with INSERT and DELETE privileges on the 'mysql' administrative database.

There does not seem to be a CVE assignment yet.
The full advisory can be found at:
http://archives.neohapsis.com/archives/vulnwatch/2005-q1/0084.html

The advisory claims that MySQL has released a fix, and new upstream
releases (4.0.24 and 4.1.10a), which haven't appeared on mysql.com
yet.

Cheers,
 Moritz

Please rebuild rhythmbox without the libhowl0 dependency since it's
moving to non-free. Only a recompile is required, but it's required on
multiple architectures, so there should be a sourceful upload.

Thanks.

Stefano Di Paola discovered that MySQL is vulnerable to a symlink attack
if an authenticated user has CREATE TEMPORARY TABLE privileges on any
existent database.

There does not seem to be a CVE assignment yet.
The full advisory can be found at:
http://archives.neohapsis.com/archives/vulnwatch/2005-q1/0082.html

The advisory claims that MySQL has released a fix, and new upstream
releases (4.0.24 and 4.1.10a), which haven't appeared on mysql.com
yet.

Cheers,
 Moritz

The openjade error message is saying that there is a problem in the stylesheet
dbrfntry.dsl, part of the docbook-dsssl package. I suppose since the error
occurs for openjade and not jade that it could actually be an error in
openjade. I maintain jade, openjade and openjade1.3. I can look into whether
this is an openjade error if someone will tell me how to reproduce it - will
the error occur if I just get the current source of fontconfig from unstable
and attempt to build the package?

I CC'ed the docbook-dsssl package on this. It's maintained by Peter
Eisentraut. Peter, can you take a look at the stylesheets and see if
there is a problem in dbrfntry.dsl?

Bug#299223: webmin-firewall: not functional module

2005-03-12 Thread Thilo Pfennig
Package: webmin-firewall
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

i could not get this to work. I often get errors like this:

"Loading iptables ruleset: load "active"iptables-restore v1.2.11: You
must specify --to-source
Error occurred at line: 15
Try `iptables-restore -h' or 'iptables-restore --help' for more
information."

So this modules does not seem to know the real syntax (or I do get the
wrong errors?). the documentation should mention what modules one has to
load in order to use complete functionality.

I wanted a simple masquerading. That was not possible. So I think this
package is unusable.

Packages connected to apache, odbc, and scripting languages
(python/perl/php/ruby) are in the process of transitioning from
libmysqlclient10 to libmysqlclient12 for sarge. Because libmysqlclient
does not include versioned symbols, it is not possible for multiple
versions of this library to be loaded by a process without causing
segfaults. Since gda2-mysql will be loaded by GNOME processes that may
also have loaded myodbc (and therefore libmysqlclient12), this is
therefore a grave bug in gda2-mysql.

Please rebuild gda2-mysql against libmysqlclient12 by updating your
build depends to point to libmysqlclient12-dev.

They #include's obexftp/*.h and build fails - there is no 'uuid.h'.
libobexftp-dev completely unusable!

Bug#297554: Downgrade wvstreams?

2005-03-12 Thread Frank Lichtenheld
Hi all.

Since there keep popping up problems with wvdial+wvstreams4.0
(at least one with USB modems is currently present) and the maintainers
don't really seem to have the time to fix this would it perhaps be the
safest solution to just downgrade wvstreams to version 3.x again to let
that go into sarge and trying to upgrade to version 4 later again?

Comments welcome.

I don't think it's an apt issue, both emacsen-common and a2ps were
passed to dpkg in the same run (they were unpacked within the same
block) -- I need to digest the typescripts a little more, but I'm
tending towards that it is a dpkg bug.

Not in the least because I have a hunch I've seen something similar
myself since a change was made to the depcycle breaker last year.

I wait for my sponsor to upload obexftp-0.10.7-2, that fixes this issue.
You were right that it is somewhat broken but the cause was invalid.

For the time it takes for the upload, use my private deb storage:
http://www.stud.uni-karlsruhe.de/~ubq7/debian/
and get the latest version from there. Note that it has a new build-depend to
automake1.7

As an alternative, remove the obexftp.h and uuid.h lines from the client.h,
they are not needed in client.h itself and if needed should be included
seperately.
The brokeness may results from the time that gobexftp was part of the obexftp
source package.

Bug#298167: blender: insecure writing to /tmp/quit.blender

2005-03-12 Thread Martin Dickopp
reopen 298167
tags 298167 - security
severity 298167 wishlist
retitle 298167 blender: please revert writing quit.blend with O_EXCL and make
U.tempdir default to a userdir instead
thanks

Hi,

Creating quit.blend with the O_EXCL flag has a major drawback: after the
file has been written for the first time, all further attempts to write
it again will fail. This makes the feature quite useless, IMHO.

A much better solution, IMHO, would be to make U.tempdir default to a
directory that is not world-writable, e.g. the user's home directory.
Note that the user can configure the value of U.tempdir within Blender,
so she or he can change it to a directory of her or his liking.

This solution would also be more robust with respect to future security
bugs, should future Blender versions use U.tempdir for other purposes
than just creating quit.blend there.

I therefore suggest replacing this code

if (BLI_streq(U.tempdir, "/")) {
char *tmp= getenv("TEMP");
strcpy(U.tempdir, tmp?tmp:"/tmp/");
}

with

if (BLI_streq(U.tempdir, "/")) {
strcpy(U.tempdir, BLI_gethome());
}

in source/blender/src/usiblender.c.

Thanks,
Martin

Hi Joey,

Did you mean to only reference #298939 in your NMU of lesstif1-1? You said
"Closes:", which marked as fixed the bug I filed against libxpm4, which is
not part of lesstif1-1 and is not yet fixed.

I am assuming your closing of #298939 is in error (since it's not
accurate), and cloning a copy of it for CAN-2005-0605's affect of
lesstif1-1.

Package: libdbd-mysql
Version: 0.7.1-2
Severity: grave

Packages connected to apache, odbc, and scripting languages
(python/perl/php/ruby) are in the process of transitioning from
libmysqlclient10 to libmysqlclient12 for sarge. Because libmysqlclient
does not include versioned symbols, it is not possible for multiple
versions of this library to be loaded by a process without causing
segfaults. Since libdbd-mysql will be loaded by processes that may also
have loaded libmysqlclient12, depending on libmysqlclient10 is therefore
a grave bug in libdbd-mysql.

Please rebuild libdbd-mysql against libmysqlclient12 by updating
your build depends to point to libmysqlclient12-dev.

No, I suspect if I had done an automatic mass filing, I would have had fewer
false positives. :/ I'm not sure why I thought this one still needed to
transition, since apt-cache is certainly showing me the correct information
now. Sorry for bothering you.

Bug#297980: gnat-gps: causes the X server to crash when compiling

2005-03-12 Thread Peter Keller-Marxer
Package: gnat-gps
Version: 2.1.0-3
The problem does not occur with udev enabled (at least for udev
0.053-1, kernel 2.6.8-2-386): F4 and "Build" works properly. However,
the problem (X11 crash at F4) comes back if udev is disabeled again
(using, for example, "UDEV_DISABLED=yes" as boot parameter).

$ id
uid=65534(nobody) gid=1(daemon) groups=4294967295
$ touch /tmp/nobody_was_here
$ ls -l /tmp/nobody_was_here
-rw-r--r-- 1 nobody 4294967295 0 Mar 12 05:11 /tmp/nobody_was_here

Anyways this can in theory lead to some strange privelege elevation
given the gid of daemon. I chose grave since it seemed fitting although
in truth it's probably not a huge issue? There were no error logged.
Anyways if I can fix strace to work or get this to compile I might be
able to send a patch or more useful info. For now it's still running
configure... ;)

peace,
core

On closer examination, a2ps and emacsen-common are being installed in
different dpkg invocations. This is an APT problem.

Yes, it does; but until it is determined, this should be treated as an RC
bug. NSS modules that can potentially break any process on the system need
to be held to a very high standard.

For Dwayne, it may be useful to try to run the adduser command under
valgrind; since nss certainly has nothing to do with gettext, this probably
points to a memory smash that needs to be tracked down.

Bug#299248: cddb lookup buffer overflow (CAN-2005-0706)

2005-03-12 Thread Joey Hess
Package: grip
Severity: grave
Tags: security patch

Buffer overflow in discdb.c for grip 3.1.2 allows attackers to cause a
denial of service (crash) and possibly execute arbitrary code by causing
the cddb lookup to return more matches than expected.

Also affects 3.3.0. For details:

http://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php?func=detail&aid=834724&group_id=3714&atid=103714

The patch here applies to the debian version:

http://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php?func=detail&aid=1160134&group_id=3714&atid=303714

I've prepared an example patch for this (attached). The patch is not
fully tested with regard to time-skew issues due to the Makefile.*
changes.

The fact that you also need to prepare a orig.tar.gz without the font
file is of course also not reflected in the patch.

This is a wishlist, this override change is in no way a release critical
issue, and it's of quite minor importance anyway. Whether the current
priority is wrong is of subjective nature, and this will later be
assessed by an ftp-team member.

An NMU has been uploaded for this package which addresses this bug. Please
find the diffset attached. (This is actually the second of two NMUs; I
talked with Frank Lichtenheld on IRC about the fact that this bug also
affects powerpc, so an i386-specific fix is incomplete.)

2005-03-12 Thread Steve Langasek

This bug prevents the new version of erlang from reaching testing, and is
therefore of serious severity. In addition, since none of the available
versions of erlang are releasable (including the version in testing, which
causes segfaults for various packages depending on it), erlang will be
removed from testing until this problem can be resolved.

One should note that according to the upstream website this only
affects users running the distcc deamon accepting direct TCP connections
which is "insecure by design". Users in untrusted networks should use
ssh for authentication.
(Source: http://distcc.samba.org/security.html)

The insecurity of the TCP mode is documented in the man page:
"TCP connections should only be used on secure networks because there is
no user authentication or protection of source or object code."

Not making any conclusions, just adding some facts.

Bug#299261: mozilla-firefox-locale-sv: uninstallable in sid

2005-03-12 Thread Steve Langasek
Package: mozilla-firefox-locale-sv
Severity: grave

The current version of mozilla-firefox-locale-sv in unstable is no
longer installable:

# apt-get install mozilla-firefox-locale-sv
Reading Package Lists... Done
Building Dependency Tree... Done
Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.

Since you only requested a single operation it is extremely likely that
the package is simply not installable and a bug report against
that package should be filed.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
  mozilla-firefox-locale-sv: Depends: mozilla-firefox (< 1.0.0) but 1.0.1-2 is
to be installed
E: Broken packages
#

This makes the package unusable, and would also block the security-fixed
version of mozilla-firefox from reaching testing.
mozilla-firefox-locale-sv will be removed from testing until it has been
updated to work with the current version of mozilla-firefox.
