Bug#311357: Upgrade of 386 version of the 2.6.8 kernel breaks via-rhine

Irwin wrote: This is a confirmation of the bad problem with the via-rhine module for the latest version of the 386 version of the 2.6.8 kernel. Sounds like a RC bug, so I'm setting it's severity to grave. I upgraded today from kernel-image-2.6.8.2-386 version 2.6.8-13 to 2.6.8-16, and my network card (D-link 10/100 DFE-530TX) that is controlled by the via-rhine module immediately quit working Too bad this bug didn't get realized when -16 was in unstable... looks like it's too late to fix this for 3.1r0. True, there was some late minute package shiffling which meant that -16 ended up going straight into sarge. Unfortunately now we have this bug. A similar thing seems to have happened with 2.4.27 and some neftilter symbols. It partly my fault (in the sense that I uploaded the packages) and partly a process issue. I do appologise for any inconvenience and I'll try and get updates together over the next few days. But we have clearly missed the boat for 3.1r0. Hi Horms: Thanks for acknowledging the via-rhine problem that has gotten into 3.1r0. For Debian sarge users it sounds like you have plans to fix version 2.6.8-16 which is excellent. But until that happens, and for on-going Debian testing users like me what kernel 2.6 solution do you recommend for all those who require via-rhine for their networking? For example, do you (or anybody else paying attention to this bug thread) know whether the via-rhine problems also occur for kernel-image-2.6.11 (currently in unstable)? I haven't heard any reports that they occur in 2.6.11, and I imagine there are people using that combination, so if I was in your shoes I would try that. I do have a box with a VIA rhine card, I will fire it up and see if I can a) reproduce the problem in 2.6.8-16, b) if it goes away in 2.6.11-5 and c) get some fixes available for 2.6.8. But its not the D Link card in question, so I am not sure if I am in a position to test if a given kernel works. On a brighter note, I have been unable to reproduce the nefilter bug I mumbled about in my previous post, so that appears to have been a false alarm. -- Horms -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#249205: Bug #249205 - gettyps: no right to modify
I found this copyright notice (non free because it forbids commercial usage). Though with previous permission given by the second copyright owner it may become at least distriutable . Hope it helps decipher the issue if one is interested in gettyps (it looks like an interesting getty for dialup). This apply to version 2.1 while the woody package was 2.0 http://prancer.physics.louisville.edu/help/usr/getty-ps-2.1.0/INSTALL Installation instructions for getty-ps Ver 2.1.0 27-Sep-02 Copyright 1989,1990 by Paul Sutcliffe Jr. Portions copyright 2000,2002 by Christine Jamison. Permission is hereby granted to copy, reproduce, redistribute, or otherwise use this software as long as: there is no monetary profit gained specifically from the use or reproduction of this software; it is not sold, rented, traded or otherwise marketed; and this copyright notice is included prominently in any copy made. The authors make no claims as to the fitness or correctness of this software for any use whatsoever, and it is provided as is. Any use of this software is at the user's own risk. This package is distributed as source code, which must be compiled in order to provide runable program(s). Two binaries are the product of this package: getty and uugetty. The only difference between getty and uugetty is that uugetty checks and creates lockfiles. Uugetty should be used on any bidirectional line (modems, for example). Getty should be used on unidirectional lines (virtual consoles, dumb terminals). I have also included binaries of getty and uugetty for Linux; these files were compiled with gcc 2.95.3, and linked with libc.so.2.2.3. If your library is older, you will have to do the compile yourself (or grab the new library). This code should run on the following supported systems: (It is reported to work on linux kernel 0.99.15 and up, but I don't have a 0.99.x system to test it with smile.) Linux Kernel 1.x.x Linux Kernel 2.0.x Linux Kernel 2.2.x (This release was tested on Slackware 4.0) Linux Kernel 2.4.x (This release was tested on Slackware 8.1) If your system is not one of these, you will need to research your system requirements, and perhaps modify the program to get it to run properly on your system. (*Most* systems will only need values [mostly directory names] changed in config.h and changes due to different libraries.) The following are pre-requisites to compiling and installing this package: 1.Being able to log in as root; 2.Understanding how to use compress and tar; 3.Understanding how to use make; 4.Understanding about ANSI compliant C++ compilers; 5.Understanding what is the standard for placing new files on your particular system. Here is the installation synopsis, for those in a hurry: 1.Acquire and unpack the tarball containing this source code (getty_ps-2.1.0.tar.gz); 2.Modify the compile-time configuration files to meet your system's requirements (the only one you should have to change is config.h); 3.Type make to build the executables (Note that the latest compiles were done on gcc 2.95.3, with libc 2.2.3); 4.Type make install to install the newly made executables and updated man pages. Note that with this step, your old getty and uugetty binaries (if present) are saved as getty- and uugetty-, respectively. After everything is running smoothly, you can remove these backup files. By default, these binaries are put in /sbin. 5.Create and/or modify the needed config files (/etc/ttytype, /etc/gettydefs, /etc/default/getty.*, /etc/default/uugetty.*, /etc/issue). See examples in the Examples directory; 6.Modify /etc/inittab to use one or more of the new programs (getty for non-modem lines [direct VDT access] and uugetty for modem access, and enable the ports; 7.Check the installation. Or, you may follow these detailed steps to compile and install getty-ps: 1.MAKE A BACKUP COPY OF YOUR EXISTING, WORKING GETTY PROGRAM! I cannot stress this enough. There is a good chance that you will not have things configured correctly the first time around, and may not be able to log into your machine. If you are using getty as your primary getty program (as opposed to agetty or the like), it would probably be a good idea to modify /etc/inittab to use the backup copy you create in this step, and select just one or 2 ports to test the new getty. Then, if all goes well, just change /etc/inittab back the way it was. This is also probably a good time to make one of those bootable rootdisks. In any case, be sure you can boot your system in single user

Bug#312525: xmms-jack depends on xmms-dev
Package: xmms-jack Version: 0.14-1 Severity: serious Justification: Policy 3.5 Hi ! I just noticed that there is a missing dependency for xmms-jack, or worse. In fact, I do not know where the problem really is, but as this is with this package I found it, I report here. If xmms-dev is not installed, xmms-jack is not functionnal. Example:: [EMAIL PROTECTED]:/tmp $ xmms Message: device: default jack_init:initializing jack_init:unable to dlopen 'libxmms.so' jack_destructor:cleanup Then, I installed xmms-dev in order to compile the plugin, and just before compiling it, I wanted to try with this package (thinking, the maintainer have certainly tested this package on his own computer with xmms-dev installed). I did this:: [EMAIL PROTECTED]:/tmp $ sudo apt-get install xmms-dev ... [EMAIL PROTECTED]:/tmp $ xmms Message: device: default jack_init:initializing jack_init:Found frequency convertion functions, setting isXmmsFrequencyAvailable to 1 Message: fmt 5, channels: 2 jack_destructor:cleanup And next, to be sure:: [EMAIL PROTECTED]:/tmp $ sudo dpkg -r xmms-dev (Reading database ... 120321 files and directories currently installed.) Removing xmms-dev ... [EMAIL PROTECTED]:/tmp $ xmms Message: device: default jack_init:initializing jack_init:unable to dlopen 'libxmms.so' jack_destructor:cleanup Hum I concluded that in order to run xmms-jack, we have to install xmms-dev. Bug#312552: Obsolete package
Package: unrar-free Version: 1:0.0.1-2 Severity: serious Hi This package should be removed from debian. It is unusable. This unrar use unrarlib from http://www.unrarlib.org Unrar-free is very simple port to use these library. If you see on download http://www.unrarlib.org/download.html then you can see : Attention: current version works only with RAR2.0 archives! Use WinRAR 2.9 or older (NOT WinRAR 3.x!) to create the archive! But sarge, etch and sid have rar 3.x, so...it produce newer archve. Now package is unmaintaned, but I think, that adoption of unrar-free is no sense. Bug#312556: debian-installer partition bugs
Package: debian-installer Severity: grave This concerns a bug in the partition portion of the debian-installer for Debian GNU/Linux 3.1r0. At the bottom of this report are also two feature requests. 1) I start with a single 80 GB hard disk. 2) Clear the partition table. 3) Create a couple 20 GB partitions marked as RAID volumes. 4) Run Configure software RAID to tie the partitions into a RAID device (I happened to pick RAID 0 but I don't think it matters). 5) Now select the master hda hard disk and hit return to clear out the partition table. 6) The RAID0 device still exists, even though its underlying partitions are gone. 7) In particular, one can now partition hda in a usual non-raid way (just swap and a large root partition), yet the installer thinks md0 exists, and continuing the installation leads to a sequence of error messages. (Whether there will be data loss, I don't know. It seems if something tries to write to md0, it will end up writing into some random area of the now-root partition on hda, and this will lead to random data loss.) 8) Attempting to delete the md0 device isn't so easy. First off, it isn't clear that one needs to use Configure software RAID to get rid of it. But trying Configure software RAID leads to an error message that the partition table has changed and one should reboot before continuing. Thank you. Alexander Perlis __ Discover Yahoo! I wonder if we really need to remove freeamp from Debian stable. Has PlayMedia Systems (PMS) sent us a cease and desist? If not, I suggest that we ignore it until that happens. [However, if it does, we will have to move quickly to remove|rename it.] Alternatively, take whatever steps seem appropriate to make a stub package that depends on zinf (zinf is not freeamp?) so people aren't adversely affected by PMS defending their trademark. To the best of my knowledge, no such cease and desist has been incoming for the past 5 years or so, and no more point releases will be made of woody. I'm therefore closing this bug, if ever such a cease and desist is incoming, we'll deal with it then, it has not much use keeping this bug open on it. --Jeroen -- Jeroen van Wolffelaar [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://jeroen.A-Eskwadraat.nl -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe.
