According to
http://marc.theaimsgroup.com/?l=3Dbugtraqm=3D111229375217633w=3D2:

If a malicious local user has write access to a directory in which a
target user is using bzip2 to extract or compress a file to then a
TOCTOU bug can be exploited to change the permission of any file
  belonging to that user.

On decompressing bzip2 copies the permissions from the compressed
  bzip2 file to the
uncompressed file. However there is a gap between the uncompressed
file being written (and it's file handler being close) and the
permissions of the file being changed.

During this gap a malicious user can remove the decompressed file and
replace it with a hard-link to another file belonging to the user.
bzip2 will then change the permissions on the hard-linked file to be
the same as that of the bzip2 file.

This is a low impact security hole as it requires a local user to
exploit a race, and bzip2 must be run in a directory that the attacker
can write to (and +t directories probably don't work), and all you
can do is change a file permissions.=20

If you fix this hole, please refer to CAN-2005-0953 in your changelog.

Bug#312115: SIGSEGVs make libdbi unuseable

2005-06-12 Thread Steve Langasek
Hi Markus,

 $ LD_LIBRARY_PATH=. LD_PRELOAD=libefence.so.0 ./dbtest

Electric Fence 2.1 Copyright (C) 1987-1998 Bruce Perens.

ElectricFence Aborting: Allocating 0 bytes, probably a bug.
 Illegal instruction

And what is this dbtest program? Considering that there are no packages in
Debian which depend on libdbi0, it's a little difficult to check whether
those libraries work for me without writing my own test application; and a
segfault could easily be caused by a misuse of the libdbi APIs on your part,
rather than by a bug in the library. Perhaps it would be more helpful if
you would send *your* test application to the BTS for inspection.

Bug#313150: netinstall for sarge points to testing

2005-06-12 Thread Jan-Jaap Fahner

Package: apt-get
Version: 0.5.28.6
Severity: serious

Discovered when doing a fresh install:

When installing sarge using the sarge-i386-netinst.iso, the sources.list
for apt is set up to point to
'testing' instead of 'stable' or 'sarge'. This means that using the
netsetup for sarge, you still get an

RC3 installation. Manual correction of sources.list is required to fix this.

This could be an error in base-config or in apt-get, but for all
practical purposes it breaks apt.

Bug#313206: sox: Does not cope well with running out of disk space

2005-06-12 Thread Andrew Ferrier
Package: sox
Version: 12.17.3-4woody2
Severity: grave
Justification: causes non-serious data loss

I invoke sox in the following way:

sox file.au file.wav

sox runs out of disk space half-way through the conversion (as confirmed
by a subsequent df), but appears to terminate normally: nothing is
printed to stdout, and the return code is 0. The target file is
definitely truncated, as can be easily discovered by playing it.

I feel this indicates a grave problem as the user or a script might then
decide to delete the source file file.au, perhaps permanently losing the
latter part of the audio data from the file. Of course in theory they
should check the contents of the target file, but this isn't always
feasible, particularly during mass conversions.

This bug is filed on a woody system, but I have checked the changelog
in sarge and I can't see any obvious fixes to this problem. I can
re-test this problem on sarge in about a week when I have time to
upgrade my system, if necessary.

Thanks,
Andrew.

Bug#313066: gem: FTBFS: Shared lib links against static non-PIC lib.

My feeling is that there is no shared library because the upstream authors
do not have established shared library versioning, which makes maintaining
the package (and those that depend on it harder).

Do you mean they do not have a stable API / ABI? Not having a
shared library isn't going to make those problems go away.

But, is there a reason ffmpeg is not compiled with -fPIC by default ?

Yes, it might make things slower on some arches because it
requires extra instruction. But most of this can actually be
avoided.

Bug#313217: unstable capplets 2.8 makes unstable nautilus 2.10 uninstallable

2005-06-12 Thread Sebastian Seifert
Package: capplets
Version: 1:2.8.2-3
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

In current Debian unstable, there is nautilus 2.10 which conflicts with
libnautilus2-2 and depends on capplets. The version of capplets in
unstable is 2.8, and the package depends on libnautilus2-2.

aptitude dist-upgrade thus cannot upgrade nautilus and is trying to
remove all my gnome packages.

Please put capplets 2.10 into unstable (I believe it is in experimental)

Bug#313218: gtodo: Program refuses to load if a single todo item exists

2005-06-12 Thread Barrie Millar

Package: gtodo
Version: 0.14-4
Severity: critical

Hi

After performing a security update this afternoon which also downloaded
and installed Gnome 2.10, gtodo totally fails to restart if a single
todo item is located on an existing list. It starts perfectly if a
configuration cannot be found. However, add a single item, exit and then
try to restart it, and you get the following error:

Segmentation fault

It was working perfectly before I upgraded to Gnome 2.10 today. However,
now it refuses to read my backup from yesterday as well as my current
copy. I'm almost certain therefore that this bug is an inconsistency in
the linkage between gtodo and Gnome 2.10.

Could somebody also tell me how to output a package information view
like those I see in other posts (sample shown below). I've had a look
around, but can't see how it's done anywhere. Thanks

Bug#313219: gedit: Crashes when attempting to load a file

2005-06-12 Thread Barrie Millar

Package: gedit
Version: 2.10.3-1
Severity: critical

Hi

When attempting to load via any method, Gedit crashes with the following
helpful error:

The application gedit has crashed unexpectedly.

The debugging information for this error is shown at the bottom of this
message. Unfortunately it seems most of the symbols have been stripped.
From a quick examination, it seems that an error with one of the virtual
file system modules may be to blame. I have upgraded all this to the
newest unstable versions with no success.

The error begun when a weekly security update also downloaded and
installed Gnome 2.10. The error is almost certainly related in some way
to this since it worked fine before that. Apart from this security
update, nothing else has changed in regard to the system configuration.

If somebody can tell me how to output a package information view like
those I see in other posts (sample shown below), I'll post one of my
own. I've had a look around, but can't see how it's done anywhere.
Thanks

debootstrap fails to bootstrap sid on ia64 now, because libparted1.6-0
is gone, replaced with libparted1.6-12. debootstrap needs an update for
this (and will need another update when the new parted reaches sarge).

Bug#313219: gedit: Crashes when attempting to load a file

2005-06-12 Thread Justin Pryzby
On Sun, Jun 12, 2005 at 03:04:20PM +0100, Barrie Millar wrote:
The debugging information for this error is shown at the bottom of this
message. Unfortunately it seems most of the symbols have been stripped.
All binaries in Debian are stripped, usually with debhelper's
dh_strip; (which just calls /usr/bin/strip with appropriate
arguments).

If you compile the binary yourself, (apt-get -b source gedit) you will
get the debugging symbols in the backtrace (depending on the build
system, you might have to first do something like
DEB_BUILD_OPTIONS=nostrip).

You might also compile the libraries nostrip, and then there will be
symbols there, too.

If somebody can tell me how to output a package information view like
those I see in other posts (sample shown below), I'll post one of my
own. I've had a look around, but can't see how it's done anywhere.
You can just use the reportbug tool to report bugs. Otherwise, you
can dpkg -l gedit, if that is the only packages about which you want
information.

Justin

 Summary: infinite loop with -follow.

Details:

Hello,

this was found by Zhangrong Huang in http://bugs.debian.org/313081

mkdir testingfindagain
ln -s . testingfindagain/symlink

now
find testingfindagain -follow
will generate an endless loop. (For testing I suggest piping into head -c 200,
otherwise you might trigger OOM)

This was introduced between 4.2.18 and 4.2.19 (when changing find.c from r1.72
to r1.73). 4.2.x up to 4.2.18 will output this and exit:

find: Symbolic link `testingfindagain/symlink' is
part of a loop in the directory hierarchy; we have already visited the
directory to which it points.

Package: mol-modules-2.6.8
Version: 1:0.9.70+2.6.8+12
Severity: serious

The current version of mol-modules-2.6.8 is uninstallable in unstable,
because it depends on kernel-image-2.6.8-powerpc (= 2.6.8-12) where the
current version in unstable is 2.6.8-16. This strict dependency is a
serious problem, and contributed to not being able to get a security-fixed
powerpc kernel into testing in time for sarge. The current dependency
handling is really quite unmaintainable, IMHO, and I don't believe etch
should release with mol-modules in its current condition.

This probably requires first fixing the powerpc kernel-image packages to
encode a module ABI version in the package name, as is currently being done
for most other architectures.

Hi,

Steve Langasek writes:

The current version of mol-modules-2.6.8 is uninstallable in unstable,

It is also obsolete, so I have asked for it to be removed from the archive.
I hope this settles the matter.

This strict dependency is a serious problem, and contributed to not
being able to get a security-fixed powerpc kernel into testing in
 time for sarge.

I'm sorry for not keeping up, but a bug report, an informal request,
or an NMU would all have settled the matter withing a few days. It's
not like the upgrade from 2.6.8-12

I think that file was made non-executable because even if it were
executable, the dynamic loader would fail with a failed assertion. I
guess you'll have to find another method to find the glibc version.

Bug#308705: removing ipfwadm

I see, I'm curious how many people actually still use this package, now

2.4/2.6 remain. But well, as you note, there's at least someone (you)
supporting it to remain in Debian, and that has always been enough
reason in Debian to keep a package.

Thanks,

 The package returns:

This doesn't seem to be reproducible here; the program works fine for me.

Bug#313081: [bug #13381] infinite loop with -follow.

2005-06-12 Thread James Youngman

Update of bug #13381 (project findutils):

Severity: 3 - Normal = 6 - Security
  Status:None = Fixed
 Assigned to:None = jay

___

Follow-up Comment #1:

NB: THIS BUG IS A SECURITY HOLE (denial of updatedb service by users,
possibly denial of service to security checks based on find). Please note the
list of affected versions of findutils.

The problem was introduced because safely_chdir() in find.c now sometimes
avoids needing to stat the destination directory, and so stat_buf was left
unpopulated. This problem is fixed by the attached patch, which has been
committed into the development code. The scope of the security problem
extends only to the indefinite loop, the problem does not result in users
being able to persuade find to process parts of the filesystem that should be
excluded.

Having said this, this bug only occurs if the -L option was used, which
normally should not be the case with any security checks - because they should
not follow symbolic links, in general.

The next release of findutils will include this fix. The NEWS file will
outline the severity of the problem.

I hope this settles the matter.

Well, the same issue with strict dependencies applies to other versions of
mol-modules.

This strict dependency is a serious problem, and contributed to not
being able to get a security-fixed powerpc kernel into testing in
  time for sarge.

I'm sorry for not keeping up, but a bug report, an informal request,
or an NMU would all have settled the matter withing a few days. It's
not like the upgrade from 2.6.8-12 to 2.6.8-16 was a last-minute
 change.

Unfortunately, we didn't have a few days for sarge by the time this was
noticed.

Ok, closing the bug. Thanks for the follow-up.

Bug#313219: gedit: Additional Information

2005-06-12 Thread Barrie Millar
Package: gedit
Version: 2.10.3-1
Followup-For: Bug #313219

Hi

I've included some relevant information based on this bug. I am now also
using reportbug as suggested. I'm currently completing a major project
and therefore have very little spare time available to me.
Unfortunately, I will therefore be unable to do any significant
debugging, although I'll do as much as I can to help.

Firstly, I am indeed using the 2.4 kernel, specifically a slightly
modified version of the 2.4.27 (which is identical to the Debian one
with the exception of providing more modules). I tried reproducing the
bug with the 2.6.11 kernel, but it seems to work perfectly there. I
suspect that the bug you have previously identified as being the most
likely is therefore correct.

I compiled a new binary by following the provided instructions as well as those
provided in this thread. However, oddly enough, the output I originally
received from the Gnome bug tracker is still missing the symbols. I ran gdb
with gedit to see if that would provide any additional information, but it
seems the symbols are still stripped, despite setting the DEB_BUILD_OPTIONS to
nostrip and re-building. I'm not sure what went wrong here, but given the fact
it works on the 2.6 kernel, I suspect that the bug may already of been tracked
down. Could you tell me in what package this bug has appeared, I'm interested
to see what it says myself.

I've attached a copy of the gdb output in case you find it of use to
you. This is from the re-built copy of Gedit.

Regards,

Barrie

Bug#313316: mozilla-js-debugger: menu option doesn't do anything at all.

2005-06-12 Thread Nick Lewycky
Package: mozilla-js-debugger
Version: 2:1.7.8-1
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

I go to Tools - Web Development - JavaScript Debugger ... and
nothing happens. Nothing at all. The JavaScript Console shows no
errors, and neither does the text console Mozilla is run from. I don't
know how long ago it broke, but it used to work.

2005-06-12 Thread Steve Langasek
Hi Fernando,

Are you still interested in maintaining wap-wml-tools? This RC bug has been
open for ten months now, because the source package doesn't comply with
current policy.

Bug#278675: debget: relies on outdated archive structure

2005-06-12 Thread Steve Langasek
Hi Roderick,

Are you still interested in maintaining debget? Is the patch supplied by
Alexis to fix this RC bug satisfactory?

FWIW, I don't think there's much point to keeping this package in the
archive if no one currently finds it useful, just on the chance that someone
may fix it later.

Thanks,

Bug#175604: cxx's compaq mangling style not supported by binutils

Hi Adam,

Since the cxx package is now unusable with current binutils, is there any
reason to keep this package around in the archive?
