Bug#314459: lvmcreate_initrd fails to create working initrds
Package: lvm10 Version: 1.0.8-8 Severity: critical Problem description: lvm10 is the logical volume manager userspace utility package for the official 2.4 kernel series. When setting up a system which has its root partition on LVM, the kernel has to be loaded from a non-LVM boot partition (which the bootloader can handle), together with an initrd that contains /sbin/vgscan /sbin/vgchange -a y in its linuxrc to detect and initialize the LVM partitions. Only after this, / can be moved to LVM. the lvmcreate_initrd utility is supposed to create a ramdisk image that does precisely this job. If this ever worked as advertised, it seems as if the behaviour of vgscan/vgchange changed in a way not respected by lvmcreate_initrd. In particular, either vgscan or vgchange tries to write a considerable amount of temporary data into the ramdisk, more than it can handle, which causes partition detection to fail. Effect: it is not possible to disk-boot a system with / installed on LVM. This presumably justifies the rating of this bug as critical. (One may argue that / never should be on LVM, however, (1) the official documentation does not explicitly state so, (2) there are situations where snapshotting for / is highly desirable.) Solution: The initrd created by lvmcreate_initrd should be a (compressed) ext2 image of about 6 MB (uncompressed) size, created with increased inode density (mke2fs -i 1024), containing everything from the image created by the broken lvmcreate_initrd, as well as a directory etc/lvmtab.d - with such an initrd, LVM detection and boot will work. For completeness, here is a working GRUB menu.lst entry showing how to boot such a system: title Debian GNU/Linux LVM, kernel 2.4.31 root(hd0,0) kernel /vmlinuz-2.4.31 root=3a05 ro vga=ext ramdisk_size=8192 initrd /initrd-lvm-2.4.30-repaired-manually.gz savedefault boot Notes: (*) It does not work to give part of the kernel args in the 'kernel' line, and others (like ramdisk_size) in an extra 'append' line. (*) Specifying the root= kernel parameter as [0-9a-f]{4} causes the kernel to first look for a /dev/ entry with that name. If that fails, it tries to boot from the device whose [major][minor] ID is the one given. LVM usually has major ID 58, which is 3a in hex. The minor id designates the partition and can be found out e.g. by looking into /proc/partitions of a CD-booted system which has LVM activated. -- regards, [EMAIL PROTECTED] (o_ Thomas Fischbacher - http://www.cip.physik.uni-muenchen.de/~tf //\ (lambda (n) ((lambda (p q r) (p p q r)) (lambda (g x y) V_/_ (if (= x 0) y (g g (- x 1) (* x y n 1)) (Debian GNU) -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#314465: CA.pl and openssl.cnf default to insecure MD5 digest
Package: openssl Version: 0.9.7e-3 Severity: grave Tags: security Justification: user security hole openssl.cnf defaults to usage of MD5 as digest algorithm for generation of certificates and CAs. MD5 must be considered broken beyond hope, we're not just talking about theoretical attacks, but attacks feasible for everybody. X.509 keys with colliding checksums (and thus false certificates) have been shown. See: http://www.cits.rub.de/MD5Collisions/ for another example. Unfortunately, there seem to be problems with RIPEMD160 in practice (e.g. the Debian Thunderbird package doesn't understand RIPEMD160). So the only reasonable choice at the moment is SHA-1, even though SHA-1 has been theoretically weakend already, and RIPEMD160 would be preferable. I suggest adding default_md: sha-1 in the req and ca sections of openssl.cnf, and talking the upstream maintainers into supporting SHA-384 or SHA-512. -- System Information: Debian Release: 3.1 Architecture: i386 (i686) Kernel: Linux 2.6.8-2-686 Locale: LANG=en_GB.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=en_GB.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Versions of packages openssl depends on: ii libc6 2.3.2.ds1-22 GNU C Library: Shared libraries an ii libssl0.9.7 0.9.7e-3 SSL shared libraries -- no debconf information -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#314373: [debootstrap-udeb] Breaks new installations - Additional info
I've tried to trace the last remaining error. As far as I can tell, this problem is not in debootstrap, so it would have to be in d-i's run-debootstrap. I have done an install with extra debugging statements around the last statements in debootstrap (see deboot.debug), but even with an explicit 'exit 0' I still get the error message The debootstrap program exited with an error (return value 1).. The output of the debug statements is in deboot.fjp. You could consider adding an explicit 'exit 0' at the end of the script anyway. The paths you show above are missing the initial / at the beginning. The paths should begin as /usr not just usr. Also, these two files are just symlinks into files that reside in your gcc installation directory. You might want to check you flipped your /usr/lib/gcc-lib/ subdirectories correctly between 2.95 and 3.2. Alan Your hints convinced me to search for the install script. The error appeared while executing /var/lib/dpkg/info/cxx.postinst. Nevertheless, this script seemed correct; the relative paths are intentional, from an unpacking directory. After looking closer, I noticed it was actually an inconsistency in the RPM, because it made a symlink to /usr/lib/crtbegin.o and /usr/lib/crtend.o. And of course these became dangling, because Debian puts them in /usr/lib/gcc-lib/alpha-linux/2.95.4 So, the workaround was to temporarily create 2 extra symlinks: cd /usr/lib ln -s /usr/lib/gcc-lib/alpha-linux/2.95.4/crtbegin.o crtbegin.o ln -s /usr/lib/gcc-lib/alpha-linux/2.95.4/crtend.o crtend.o And then the packages installed right. It consequently makes correct symlinks in /usr/lib/compaq/cxx-6.3.9.7/alpha-linux/bin So you can clean up the temporary symlinks in /usr/lib. Thanks for pointing this out, I'll look for and try to fix this in the next cxx .deb release, in addition to the two other open cxx bugs. I've got to wishlist migrating all of these packages to gcc-3.2 also... will do soon. Zeen, -- -Adam P. Package: busybox Version: 1:1.00-1 Severity: serious Hi, Your package is failing bo build on all arches other than i386 with the following error: dpkg-gencontrol: error: current build architecture $arch does not appear in package's list (i386) This looks like it's about busybox-floppy-udeb (the only udeb that has that.) so I assume it gets build for those arches, installed, but then fails because it shouldn't have installed it. Bug#196590: acknowledged by developer (Zope (= 2.5) in woody is missing security updates)

I don't think Fabio should have closed the bug. Good. Look, its obvious nobody cares enough to actually fix these holes, but if you're going to close the bug atleast do it under more accurate pretenses. If you actually care, I would be happy to work with you on fixing the problems once and for all. However, when zope 2.5 was current, I didn't even know about zope yet, so I'll rely on you to help. I don't care. I just think people should know what they're in for if they install this software. I gave up trying to get the Zope developers to think about security; they'd rather rewrite everything from the ground up every few years and replace one set of bugs with another, which is fine it is their perogative to do that, but as a result I haven't followed Zope development for about a year, so backporting all the fixes between 2.5 and now, even if I had the time, isn't somthing I really want to help with. I don't expect to see these bugs fixed, but until woody is burried it wouldn't hurt to just leave this bug open. -- Jamie Heilman http://audible.transient.net/~jamie/ I was in love once -- a Sinclair ZX-81.
