Sorry, but I am not sure what you are trying to tell here. Since 3.0 is
in unstable, we can't easily provide a fixed 2.0.2 package for testing,
even if we had the manpower to do so. We can only try to offer
workarounds. In your case, I think it would be best to uninstall jadetex
and texinfo. After that, update to teTeX 3.0 from unstable, which works
fine if jadetex is not present. After that, reinstall jadetex and
texinfo. HTH.

Maybe you think it is from scratch, but actually isn't? Because with:

  # dpkg -P tetex-extra tetex-bin tetex-base tetex-doc texinfo tex-common

followed by:

  # apt-get install tetex-bin tetex-extra

I get:

  # cnf=$($(kpsewhich --var-value=TEXMFMAIN)/texconfig/tcfmgr \
dquote cmdsubst --cmd find --file fmtutil.cnf) \
echo cnf: $cnf grep mfw $cnf; unset cnf
  cnf: /var/lib/texmf/web2c/fmtutil.cnf
  #

i.e., mfw does *not* appear in fmtutil.cnf.

I don't know why (maybe this format is obsolete), but it explains why I
don't get the error you reported.

Thanks. I purged all my latex packages, including the ones that depended
on a tetex install, and this did the trick. Don't ask me why. Probably
there was some old crufty, stale package interfering with the upgrade.

All current etch netinst and full CDs fail to install now, since secure
apt has entered testing[1]. Apt complains that packages can't be
authenticated, since the CD does not include signed Release files.

Unless this is fixed very soon, the next d-i beta release will have to
not include such CDs, and limit itself to businesscard CDs and netboot
mini isos.

As I understand it, there is basically no way we can build official
Debian CDs that are signed with our archive signing key. There is also
currently no way to turn off the signature checking that doesn't disable
it for all apt sources, which wouldn't be an acceptible tradeoff.

The simplest fix would be to special case apt to not require CD sources
to be authenticated. This seems ok to me, since the user has already
*booted* the CD, at least when using it as install media.

Another approach might be to create a separate key that's used to sign
CD builds, but this has lots of problems. Current daily Debian CD builds
happen on a non-DSA controlled machine. If apt trusted the key that
would weaken its security for non-CD sources too.

Hmm... yes. (I've not checked, but if stable (sarge) has the same
problem when installing the packages in some order, shouldn't it
 be fixed in this case?)

The texinfo problem doesn't exist in stable, which has 4.7. And if the
problem existed in stable, it would not be fixed, either, since no
updates to stable are allowed except security updates.

even if we had the manpower to do so. We can only try to offer
workarounds. In your case, I think it would be best to uninstall jadetex
and texinfo. After that, update to teTeX 3.0 from unstable, which works
fine if jadetex is not present. After that, reinstall jadetex and
 texinfo. HTH.

If I want to do this, I need to remove the packages that depend
 on jadetex too.

Of course it's just a workaround, you would have to reinstall them
again. But a fixed package will be available soon.

And there's also the problem with xmltex.

In the mail where you reported this, the error message is:

Error: `tex -ini -jobname=xmltex -progname=xmltex latex xmltex.ini' failed

However, when I install xmltex on a system with tetex-2.0.2 (e.g. on
sarge), the message is

running `etex -ini -jobname=xmltex -progname=xmltex latex xmltex.ini' ...

which is successful. The difference is that on your system, tex is used
instead of etex. Could it be that you have changed or refused an update
of xmltex's configuration files?

Version: 1.1.4-2
Severity: serious

Because gcj nor jikes are able to compile java code on mipsel, kaffe
unfortunately needed to be dropped for mipsel.

Please stop building the java bindings for mipsel, and add a [!mipsel]
qualification to your kaffe build-dependency.

When you've made that upload, please reassign this bug to to ftp.debian.org
so that the mipsel bindings of subversion as they are in the archive now
can be dropped.

Please note that mips is in a similar situation, it's likely that kaffe
will stop supporting mips too in the near future. So you could stop
building java bindings for mips too, if you wish -- or alternatively wait
and see, it's not sure yet.

 The following:

As said, the error happens when I install tetex from scratch.

Maybe you think it is from scratch, but actually isn't?

Yes, the entry in fmtutil.cnf that uses mfw must be either a local
change or (unlikely) from a buggy package.

i.e., mfw does *not* appear in fmtutil.cnf.

I don't know why (maybe this format is obsolete), but it explains why I
don't get the error you reported.

mfw was the name of the mf binary with X11 support, mf-nowin is the name
without. In 2.0, /usr/bin/mf was a symlink to /usr/bin/mfw, now it the
binary itself is called /usr/bin/mf.

I think this is an upstream change, but restoring the old behavior
probably won't hurt anybody. We could also create the reverse symlink
(mfw - mf), but then we get problems in case we want to split of a
tetex-bin-nowin package and want /usr/bin/mf to be managed with
update-alternatives.

This is common and has a number of causes; the usual=20
solutions are to read the manual pages then download and
install needed JAR files, or fix the build file:=20
  - You have misspelt 'junit'.
Fix: check your spelling.
  - The task needs an external JAR file to execute
and this is not found at the right place in the classpath.
Fix: check the documentation for dependencies.
Fix: declare the task.
  - The task is an Ant optional task and the JAR file and/or libraries
implementing the functionality were not found at the time you
yourself built your installation of Ant from the Ant sources.
Fix: Look in the ANT_HOME/lib for the 'ant-' JAR corresponding to the
task and make sure it contains more than merely a META-INF/MANIFEST.=
MF.
If all it contains is the manifest, then rebuild Ant with the needed
libraries present in ${ant.home}/lib/optional/ , or alternatively,
  download a pre-built release version from apache.org
  - The build file was written for a later version of Ant
Fix: upgrade to at least the latest release version of Ant
  - The task is not an Ant core or optional task=20
and needs to be declared using taskdef.
  - You are attempting to use a task

Bug#334876: ifplugd scripts relies on hotplug deprecated by udev

2005-10-20 Thread Gilles Grandou
Package: ifplugd
Version: 0.26-2
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

ifplugd was used to be stated by hotplug, running the next
script /etc/hotplug.d/net/ifplugd.hotplug.

Since udev 0.070-3, hotplugging is embedded in udev and
hotplug is deprecated.

udev now calls ifplugd.hotplug itself. However the scripts
abort due the missing /etc/hotplug/hotplug.functions file.

Bug#334880: ethereal 0.10.13 fixes lots of vulnerabilities

2005-10-20 Thread Moritz Muehlenhoff
Package: ethereal
Version: 0.10.12-6
Severity: grave
Tags: security
Justification: user security hole

As usual ethereal 0.10.13 fixes lots of vulnerabilities, most of them are only
denial-of-
service, but some can lead to execution of arbitrary code.

Affecting only sid:
o The ISAKMP dissector could exhaust system memory. Versions affected:
0.10.11 to 0.10.12.
o The SigComp UDVM could go into an infinite loop or crash. Versions
affected: 0.10.12.
o The ACSE dissector was susceptible to infinite recursion. Versions
affected: 0.10.12.

Affecting Sarge and sid:
o The IrDA dissector could crash. Versions affected: 0.10.0 to 0.10.12.
o The BER dissector was susceptible to an infinite loop. Versions
affected: 0.10.3 to 0.10.12.
o The SCSI dissector could dereference a null pointer and crash. Versions
affected: 0.10.3 to 0.10.12.
o The sFlow dissector could dereference a null pointer and crash. Versions
affected: 0.9.14 to 0.10.12.
o The RTnet dissector could dereference a null pointer and crash. Versions
affected: 0.10.8 to 0.10.12.
o If SMB transaction payload reassembly is enabled the SMB dissector could
crash. This preference is disabled by
default. Versions affected: 0.9.7 to 0.10.12.
o The X11 dissector could attempt to divide by zero. Versions affected:
0.10.1 to 0.10.12.
o The AgentX dissector could overflow a buffer. Versions affected: 0.10.10
to 0.10.12.
o The WSP dissector could free an invalid pointer. Versions affected:
0.10.1 to 0.10.12.
o The NCP dissector was susceptible to an infinite loop. Versions
affected: 0.9.7 to 0.10.12.
o iDEFENSE found a buffer overflow in the SRVLOC dissector. Versions
affected: 0.10.0 to 0.10.12.

Affecting Woody, Sarge and sid:
o The FC-FCS dissector could exhaust system memory. Versions affected:
0.9.0 to 0.10.12.
o The RSVP dissector could exhaust system memory. Versions affected: 0.9.4
to 0.10.12.
o The ISIS LSP dissector could exhaust system memory. Versions affected:
0.8.18 to 0.10.12.
o The SLIMP3 dissector could overflow a buffer. Versions affected: 0.9.1
to 0.10.12.
o If the Dissect unknown RPC program numbers option was enabled, the ONC
RPC dissector might be able to exhaust system
memory. This option is disabled by default. Versions affected: 0.7.7 to
0.10.12.

Cheers,
Moritz

Will an upload to fix boost's FTBFS on hppa and m68k be made soon? As kdeedu

I didn't change xmltex's configuration file, and IIRC, didn't refuse
updates of configuration files. But I installed it a long time ago,
so I don't remember everything. One problem is that configuration
file updates are disabled by default, and I may have chosen the
default answer by mistake during an upgrade.

Bug#334713: More info

2005-10-20 Thread Jules Bean

I had the problem described in this report.

A little investigation showed that the errant 'mfw' line was in
/etc/texmf/fmt.d/99postinf.cnf.

The wording at the top of that file is informative.

#
#
# /etc/texmf/fmt.d/99postinst.cnf
#
# This file has been generated by tetex-bin's postinst script.
# teTeX no longer uses /etc/texmf/fmtutil.cnf for its configuration,
# but rather a file in /var/lib/texmf/web2c that is generated from
# configuration files in /etc/texmf/fmt.d.
#
# The postinst script detected that your old fmtutil.cnf contained
# lines that you seem to have added manually. In order to include those
# lines in the generated file, they have been extracted to this file,
# /etc/texmf/fmt.d/99postinst.cnf.
#
# You can add changes here, or in a new file in this directory, see
# the manpage of /usr/sbin/update-fmtutil(8). Note that if there are two
entries

# for a format, the second wins - because this file has number 99,
# it's entries will always be last
#
#

I hope this helps you solve this problem.

Jules Bean

Bug#334113: kernel allows loadkeys to be used by any user, allowing for local root compromise

2005-10-20 Thread Krzysztof Halasa
Rudolf Polzer [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes:

We use a PS/2 port, so without a reboot, this would not work. IIRC 2.6
 kernels
with keyboard support compiled into the kernel cannot be forced to re-detect
the keyboard when the line was interrupted (which is a big problem with
 old KVM
 switches).

Must have been a different problem, just tried and the keyboard works fine.

But of course one can connect the dongle before rebooting. Dead keyboard
can force reboot as well, can't it?

Of course, with USB keyboards this approach would work.

Would be less trivial.

I've added the upstream URL and the upstream author name, plus the reference
 to
the LGPL. This should fulfil all the mandatory requests in policy 12.5. this

Cool, it seems that ubuntu is not following the same policy on this, so any
package coming from them should be carefully inspected.

Now, if only dmraid supported my 3ware/amcc 9500S-4LP card :/

I hope this helps you solve this problem.

Yes, it clearly shows that the problem is the result of a local change
of the configuration, and cannot be blamed on tetex-bin. However, we
will again provide the mfw executable and thus fix the bug.

Bug#330682: mantis: Several vulnerabilities in Mantis

2005-10-20 Thread Moritz Muehlenhoff
Hilko Bengen wrote:
mantis 1.0.0-rc2 fixed these security problems, that seem to be missing in
the latest DSA upload that fixed several others:

  - 0006189: [security] List of users (in filter) visible for unauthorized
  users. (thraxisp)

Besides that there was a CVE assignment (CAN-2005-3091) for a
  Cross-Site-Scripting
vulnerability that refers the Mantis bug 5751, for which I can't find a
  referenced
fix in the 0.19.2-4 changelog as well.

Three weeks later, there has been no response yet from the maintainer,
perhaps you are busy with other projects? Since I think it's important
that RC bugs get fixed in a timely manner, I am looking into preparing
an NMU for this within the next week. This is of course no offense but
an effort to help improve the quality of Debian.

No offense taken. My impression was that those bugs had all been fixed
in the last security update, as Joey suggested.

DSA-778 fixed
CVE-2005-2556, CVE-2005-2557, CVE-2005-3090 (this was added to the DSA text in
retrospect)
and has been pulled over to sid.

I haven't checked that with the sources yet, but the mantis bugs
0006097: [security] user ID is cached indefinately (thraxisp)
0006189: [security] List of users (in filter) visible for unauthorized users.
(thraxisp)
0005751: Non-descript Cross-Site-Scripting issue aka CVE-2005-3091
seem required for sid. Sarge might be affected as well.

Cheers,

I certainly don't specifically remember editing any of the fmt config

But, it is true that a couple of years ago I was playing with mfw, so
it's not impossible that I changed something then.

Package: pdns-backend-mysql
Version: 2.9.17-13sarge1
Severity: serious

The postrm says:

PDNSCONF=/etc/powerdns/pdns.conf
PDNSDIR=`cat $PDNSCONF | grep include | awk -F '=' '{print $2}'`
PDNSLOCAL=$PDNSDIR/pdns.local
...
case $1 in
  remove)
  sed -i -e 's/^gmysql/# gmysql/' $PDNSLOCAL
...

My pdns.conf has no line saying include in it because when I upgraded
from the previous version, I didn't put the new config file in[*], so
PDNSLOCAL is set to /pdns.local. So we get this:

Stopping PowerDNS authoritative nameserver: not running
sed: can't read /pdns.local: No such file or directory
dpkg: error processing pdns-backend-mysql (--remove):
subprocess post-removal script returned error exit status 2

Bad mojo...

Regards,
Rob

*: Now I've looked, I appreciate that the include pdns.d way is
better, but when I was upgrading to sarge and answered the question
I didn't know that my existing config was already reflected in
pdns.d/pdns.local. It might've been a good idea to ship a NEWS.Debian
explaining this but it's a bit late for sarge now... :)

Bug#334691: (no subject)

2005-10-20 Thread daniele
Hello.

I have a trouble that I think is related to the same bug,
with an italian keyboard map, that does not work anymore
with UTF-8, when with previous version (console-tools
and libconsole 0.2.3dbs-56) just works fine.
Of course, the trobule is related to accented letters
in UTF-8 mode.

thank you for your attention.

Bug#334899: FTBFS in unstable: dependency on libcurl3-dev

xmms-scrobbler Build-Depends on libcurl3-dev, which does not exist in
unstable anymore and therefore FTBFS. It might be better to Build-Depend
on either libcurl3-openssl-dev or libcurl3-gnutls-dev in order to solve
 this issue..

Actually, licurl3-dev has been reintroduced as a transition package.
xmms-scrobbler should still be updated to pick one of the two new variants
instead, but in the meantime this is not a serious bug.

Cheers,

When I try to install torcs I get the following error message:

# apt-get install torcs

Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.

Since you only requested a single operation it is extremely likely that
the package is simply not installable and a bug report against
that package should be filed.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
torcs: Depends: plib1.8.4 but it is not installable
E: Broken packages

As advised by apt-get here comes the bug-report :-)

(setting the tags to reflect that the upload isn't really pending)

hi,

was unhappy to see that aspell-sv is still uninstallable in
sid as of today, and unfortunately min svenska är inte så bra,
so i'm not sure i fully understand why.

am i understanding correctly that you (erik) have prepared
a new package to meet the criteria of the new aspell, but brian
is unable or unwilling to upload it for some reason? if so, is
it merely a lack of time/interest, or are there technicalities
in the packaging that are a problem?

in any case, i'd be happy to spend the time to sponsor the upload
if it's not going to tread on anyone's toes.

Bug#334936: francine: Uninstallable in unstable: please build-depend on libslang1-dev or libslang2-dev

2005-10-20 Thread Nathanael Nerode
Package: francine
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

Thanks to a slang transition, 'francine' is uninstallable in unstable
(and so will never be in another Debian release unless this is fixed).

Either it should be patched for slang2 (bug #315230), or if there's
a problem with that, it should Build-Depend on libslang1-dev. slang1-dev
is gone.

Bug#330012: avifile NMU

2005-10-20 Thread Nathanael Nerode
Please NMU this if the maintainer doesn't upload in a few days. There is a
lot wrong with the package which can be fixed by a simple upload.

Mostly there is the C++ transition (330012, 327932, 324848).
Qt3 is ready as of a few days ago.
(This is preventing dvr from transitioning, among other things.)

The package has bugs against it for the libslang transition (321550)
and the aalib transition (320883). However, these are caused solely by the
sdl dependency and will go away with a new upload, because avifile doesn't
build-depend on either of them! (318233).

220056 should also be rechecked after the transition to see whether it's
fixed, and if not to give a new list of undefined symbols.

While you're at it, you probably want to drop the alternate dependencies on
libsdl1.1-dev and libsdl1.0-dev, as neither are in oldstable, stable,
testing, unstable, or experimental.

There are also two porting bugs with patches, but those are not necessarily
appropriate for the NMU. Also, the copyright statements (Copyright year
person) in all the source files should be collected and put into the
debian/copyright file (324970), but this may be more work than is necessary
for the NMU.

Bug#333040: also uninstallable in unstable

2005-10-20 Thread Nathanael Nerode
So the sum of this discussion for pixelize is that
* The binary depends directly on libpng10-0, so it needs to be rebuilt.
* It build-depends directly on imlib1-dev. This must be changed to imlib11-dev,
so it needs a new upload doing that.

Bug#334882: squid: [CVE-2005-3258] remote FTP buffer overflow

Hi Martin,
thanks for reporting this. Actually this bug was introduced in a
patch to squid-2.5.STABLE10 that has never been applied to a debian
package. So Debian is not affected. I did not upload any package
based on squid-2.5.STABLE11 since upstream stated that this release
is known to be badly broken.

I just fixed the missing patch for the previous bug and will upload
it shortly.

Regards,

Hi Luigi!

There is a new buffer overflow in Squid:

| ==
| Candidate: CVE-2005-3258
| URL: http://cve.mitre.org/cgi-bin/cvename.cgi?name=CVE-2005-3258
| Reference: CONFIRM:http://www.squid-cache.org/Versions/v2/2.5/
bugs/#squid-2.5.STABLE11-rfc1738_do_escape

|
| The rfc1738_do_escape function in ftp.c for Squid 2.5 STABLE11 and
| earlier allows remote FTP servers to cause a denial of service
| (segmentation fault) via certain crafted responses.

(Please note the recent Mitre name change, vulnerabilities now have
the CVE prefix, not CAN any more).

In addition, I just noticed that in version 2.5.10-6 you added a
security patch 46-ntlm-scheme-assert.dpatch which is not actually
applied in 00list. Please add it. (One of the reasons why I hate
dpatch :-/ ).

Bug#334113: kernel allows loadkeys to be used by any user, allowing for local root compromise

2005-10-20 Thread Bill Davidsen

Paul Jakma wrote:

On Tue, 18 Oct 2005, Krzysztof Halasa wrote:

I like to load a custom keymap to swap ctrl and caps-lock.

I'd like to keep that ability, but I'd much prefer if it didn't affect
all VTs, and if it didn't persist past the end of my session.

I believe in security, no matter how inconvenient, but it would be
desirable to allow the user to reload the keymap, and the character set
as well, only for the session in use. The solution would seem to lie in
having an unchanging SAK key, and on exit from a session absolutely
reset everything.

Clearly this would take some rethinking and a fair amount of work, so
the right thing to do is use capabilities to block misuse until/unless
convenience can be made secure.

Key mapping as a whole sucks, you have the map you get in a vt, which is
ignored by X which maps its own, except when an X app remaps it yet
again locally. Lots of room for both evil and stupidity.

lm-sensors's configuration script pwmconfig, which is used, generally as
root, to probe the fan controls and generate a new configuration file,
uses files under /tmp in an unsafe way which makes it possible to
conduct symlink attacks. The temporary filename used to create a
temporary configuration file is hardcoded to '/tmp/fancontrol'.

Thanks to Javier Fernández-Sanguino Peña [EMAIL PROTECTED] who first
reported me the bug.

 No idea what's wrong. See
 http://buildd.debian.org/build.php?arch=3Dmipspkg=3Dtellicover=3D1.0-1

That's a known transient problem with qt+kdelibs which has since been fixed.
The package has been given back for building; since I don't believe this is
a bug in tellico, I'm closing this report.

 hi,

was unhappy to see that aspell-sv is still uninstallable in
sid as of today, and unfortunately min svenska är inte så bra,
so i'm not sure i fully understand why.

am i understanding correctly that you (erik) have prepared
a new package to meet the criteria of the new aspell, but brian
is unable or unwilling to upload it for some reason? if so, is
it merely a lack of time/interest, or are there technicalities
in the packaging that are a problem?

No good reason from me, other than I've just been too busy to look at
the package. I'll take a look at it right now...

in any case, i'd be happy to spend the time to sponsor the upload
if it's not going to tread on anyone's toes.

If I don't sponsor it by tomorrow, feel free to take care of it
yourself.

Bug#203598: Information about Hoodia the new diet wonder

2005-10-20 Thread Branden Guthrie

I work in an office where there is always food to snack on.
I kept trying different diet pills to lose the extra pounds but none of them
worked

I not only lose the extra pounds but can walk by the snack machine without a
second glance.
Best of all, I finally caught the attention of my office worker and he asked me
out.
Thank you Hoodia Maximum Strength for changing my life!!

As of the aspell 0.60.3-2 package, I changed the location in which
aspell looks for dictionaries from /usr/lib/aspell-0.60 to
/usr/lib/aspell (for support for autobuilding dictionary hashes).
Obviously, this broke all existing dictionaries so I made it conflict
with dictionaries providing aspell6-dictionary.

Additionally, as of version 0.60.3-3 in conjunction with
dictionaries-common = 0.49.2, aspell now fully supports building
dictionary hashes at install time. This provides two huge advantages
over packaging the hashes in the .deb:

1. The dictionary packages may be Arch: all, which for some dictionaries
provides a significant relief to the mirrors.

2. The hashes will be automatically rebuilt for new aspell versions if
the dictionary format changes, eliminating the need to transition all
   dictionary packages.

Consequently, this is now the preferred method for packaging aspell
dictionaries.

Packaging dictionaries for aspell = 0.60.3-3
-

[Old-style hashes (.rws files) in .deb]

1. Change Provides: aspell6-dictionary to Provides:
   aspell6a-dictionary

2. Ensure dictionary files are installed to /usr/lib/aspell

3. Remove any dependency on libaspell15 (see #310590) or aspell-bin
(which no longer exists). Instead depend on aspell (= 0.60.3-2).

[New-style autobuilt hashes]

1. Change Provides: aspell6-dictionary to Provides:
   aspell-dictionary (no version in name).

2. Remove build-dependency on aspell(-bin)

3. Change Architecture to all

4. Add binary package dependency on aspell (= 0.60.3-3)

5. Remove any relationship on libaspell15 or aspell-bin

6. Package an empty file /var/lib/aspell/$DICT_LANG.compat (where
$DICT_LANG is the iso code for the dictionary, e.g. en)

7. Install the wordlists compressed as .mwl.gz, .wl.gz, or .cwl.gz to
   /usr/share/aspell.

8. For each of the above wordlists:

   a. Package an empty file /var/lib/aspell/$WORDLIST.rws (where
$WORDLIST is the wordlist filename minus the .*wl.gz extension)

   b. Add a symlink /usr/lib/aspell/$WORDLIST.rws -
  /var/lib/aspell/$WORDLIST.rws

   c. Append the $WORDLIST to the file
  /usr/share/aspell/$DICT_LANG/.contents. The .contents file
should contain one $WORDLIST per line.

9. Add a postinst call to /usr/sbin/update-dictcommon-aspell--the
easiest way to do this is to build-depend on dictionaries-common-dev
   (= 0.9.1) and run installdeb-aspell from debian/rules.

For some examples, see aspell-en (for dictionaries based on
ftp://ftp.gnu.org/gnu/aspell/dict tarballs) or aspell-es (for
dictionaries based

Package: francine
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

Thanks to a slang transition, 'francine' is uninstallable in unstable
(and so will never be in another Debian release unless this is fixed).

Either it should be patched for slang2 (bug #315230), or if there's
a problem with that, it should Build-Depend on libslang1-dev. slang1-dev
is gone.

libslang1 is supposed to provide slang1, so this isn't really true.
The uninstallability was due to local trouble.
Closing.
