Bug#341542: CVE number

2005-12-02 Thread Martin Pitt
Hi!

The CVE number CVE-2005-3962 has been assigned to this. Please mention
this number in the changelog when you fix this.

Thanks,

Martin

==
Name: CVE-2005-3962
Status: Candidate
URL: http://cve.mitre.org/cgi-bin/cvename.cgi?name=CVE-2005-3962
Reference: FULLDISC:20051201 Perl format string integer wrap vulnerability
Reference:
URL:http://marc.theaimsgroup.com/?l=full-disclosure&m=113342788118630&w=2
Reference: MISC:http://www.dyadsecurity.com/perl-0002.html

Integer overflow in the format string functionality (Perl_sv_vcatpvfn)
in Perl 5.9.2 and 5.8.6 Perl allows attackers to overwrite arbitrary
memory and possibly execute arbitrary code via format string
specifiers with large values, as demonstrated using format string
vulnerabilities in Perl applications.

Bug#341338: Cannot install synaptic on Debian Sid

Unfortunately, there's currently a backlog on the i386 autobuilder, which
has kept the synaptic update from actually being built and uploaded to
unstable. For the moment, the autobuilder is tied up building
openoffice.org packages, but synaptic should get built in the next couple of
days.

If you need a fix before then, you can always use apt-src to build your own
local synaptic package with fixed dependencies.

it is the same of #334959 which i worked around using gcc 3.4.
starting with 3.4.4-10, also gcc 3.4 got broken with the same linker
error. as per #334959, i do not know how to manage it.

i tried both gcc 4.0 and gcc 3.4 using -O2 but nothing changed. i also
opened #334497 against binutils because i thought it was due to
binutils, but now i'm starting to doubt about this.

i think here is required some toolchain expert.

Bug#341705: mysql-server-5.0: Server crashing

2005-12-02 Thread Olaf van der Spek
Package: mysql-server-5.0
Version: 5.0.13rc-1
Severity: grave
Justification: causes non-serious data loss

Hi,

I just upgraded a server from 4.1 to 5.0 and now the MySQL server keeps
crashing.
The 5.0 version in testing is pre-stable and two months old.
I'm aware of the gcc dependency issue and asked vorlon on IRc about it:
[12:35] XTF: doing *anything* to try to circumvent the
dependencies your package picks up when built in a pristine unstable
environment is wrong.
If there's a significant RC bug in a package that you're trying to get
fixed, testing-proposed-updates is an option, but if it's a C++-related
package that won't work either.

So would testing-proposed-updates be an option?
I think the gcc issue might last a few weeks at least.

Not unless you show that the bug is not present in the version of
mysql-server-5.0 in unstable.

Bug#341542: CVE number

Yes, Fedora quoted that number in their advisory. Oddly, cve.mitre.org
doesn't appear to have that have a match for that number.

I've prepared a preliminary upload incorporating change 26240, although
am holding off for a bit, as there would appear that there may be more
than one patch required:

Bug#340646: ftbfs [sparc] [spvw_memfile.d:834] errno = ENOENT: No such file or directory.

2005-12-02 Thread Peter Van Eynde
Hello,

I'm a bit confused. From
http://buildd.debian.org/fetch.php?&pkg=mcvs&ver=1.0.13-11&arch=ia64&stamp=1133382079&file=log&as=raw

I see clisp-dev getting installed, but no clisp as described. However:

depends clisp-dev
clisp-dev
  Depends: clisp

and the control file both _do_ specify a dependency on clisp. So, why isn't
clisp getting fetched by
the apt-get install ... clisp-dev ?

I even checked on merulo:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ dchroot sid
Executing shell in chroot: /chroot/sid
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ apt-cache depends clisp-dev

On the same machine, same chroot:

clisp-dev

So why not simply drop hyperref at all in this case?

Why do you think you need this? Isn't

\ifpdf
\usepackage[colorlinks=true,CJKbookmarks]{hyperref}
\fi

enough? This will ignore hyperref completely for dvi generation, and
thus for ps generation.

An other incarnation of the infamous \pdfoutput bug. The patch

Bug#341729: Gem doesn't load

2005-12-02 Thread geiger

Package: gem
Version: 0.90.0-14
Severity: grave
Tags: etch

When trying to load the Gem library, I get the following:

# pd -lib Gem

/usr/lib/pd/extra/Gem.pd_linux: undefined symbol: vorbis_info_clear

Gem does not work at all. Recompiling the version from unstable helps.

Package: mazeofgalious
Version: 0.62-1
Severity: serious
Justification: violates section "2.3 Copyright considerations" of the debian
policy

The first thing the game does after being started is to display a spash
screen with the Konami name and logo:

/usr/share/games/mazeofgalious/graphics/naramura/konami.pcx

After that the main screen apears claiming that the game is from konami:

/usr/share/games/mazeofgalious/graphics/naramura/start.pcx

Debian is not Konami and Debian has not been given permission by Konami
to use their name and logo.

I want to point out, that the current maintainer has been informed at the ITP
[0]
that it might not be a good idea to package the game. It's not clear why
it is necessary to push it, by verbosely including Konami's trademarks
in the package. In case this happened consciously it is unclear how the
maintainer is able to do this and at the same time be aware of Debian's
most basic principles.

Package: mazeofgalious
Version: 0.62-1

When running the game I get:

Set the video resolution to: 640x400x8
ERROR in Sound_create_sound(): Could not load sound file:

A strace shows, that the game is looking for the sound files in:
[...]
chdir("/usr/share/games/mazeofgalious/") = 0
open("(null)gamestart.wav", O_RDONLY) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or directory)
[...]
chdir("/usr/share/games/mazeofgalious/") = 0
open("sound/original/gamestart.wav", O_RDONLY) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or
directory)

whereas mazeofgalious-data contains the respective sounds inside the directory:

/usr/share/games/mazeofgalious/sound/jorito

The following is a workaround (but not a correct fix):

# cd /usr/share/games/mazeofgalious/sound && ln -s jorito/ original

Besides, why should the game be split into a main and a -data package?

Bug#336645: Bug 336645: PHP 4.4.1 Security Fixes

2005-12-02 Thread David Mitchell
As a user, I wanted to throw my two cents in. Our security administrator
_is_ considering this particular fix to be critical, and has made it a
required patch. While it's true that this particular fix is protecting
against poorly written PHP scripts, it also appears to be the case that
such poorly written software is fairly common and is being actively
targeted. I also think that with this patch in PHP itself, there will be
a lot less pressure for any of the packages which employ unsafe variable
handling to actually get fixed. I know that I personally don't have a
lot of say on the matter, but it would be nice if the patched version
was released sooner. Thanks for your time.

You can always turn off register_globals in you php.ini.
register_globals = Off is a recommended setting anyway.

You need autoconf and automake1.8, I presume. (At least it builds with
those installed...)

Bug#341752: beep-media-player: Uninstallable in sid due to C++ transition of libid3 from c2 to c2a

2005-12-02 Thread Johan Kullstam
Package: beep-media-player
Version: 0.9.7.1+cvs20050803-1
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

beep-media-player requires libid3-3.8.3c2. However, apt says '[n]o
candidate version found for libid3-3.8.3c2'. The library has been
removed and is now called libid3-3.8.3c2a. The lack of required
library renders beep-media-player incapable of being installed. I
think beep-media-player needs a rebuild against the newer library
version.

You can always turn off register_globals in you php.ini.
register_globals = Off is a recommended setting anyway.

I do have it off. But there is code which basically re-implements
register_globals. The patch actually checks to ensure that you don't try
to re-define the global variable named "GLOBAL". I'm not worried about
my own code, since I do my best to practice safe variable handling.
Apparently some authors took a short cut and have re-implemented
register_globals using code like this:

foreach ($_REQUEST as $key => $value) $$key = $value;

Is that a dangerous thing to do? Sure. But that doesn't mean it's not
being done. As I said, it seems to be common enough that the patch to
prevent it being dangerous has gone from being in Hardened-PHP to
mainline PHP to having a CVE to being a mandatory patch in my
organization. That's a lot of people who seem to think it's a serious
issue. And as I said, if the upstream PHP is patched to prevent the
above code from being dangerous then there is no incentive for anybody
to fix the scripts which do have unsafe variable handling code in them.

I think an argument can be made that Sarge needs to either have the
patch in question applied or it needs to have all the PHP-dependent
packages checked to make sure they aren't doing unsafe things with
request variables. The latter is not realistically going to happen
because the PHP developers seem to have decided that the former is the
proper fix.

Personally, I don't have a big stake in the final outcome of this. I
don't have much PHP code on my systems, and what I do have is in-house
stuff which was written with safe variable handling in mind. That said,
I don't want to have to go to my security administrator and explain why
my distro of choice needs to have an exception to our patching policy
made for it.

version=2.60-bugs.debian.org_2005_01_02

Package: lvm2
Version: 2.02.00-1
Severity: critical
Justification: breaks the whole system

Problem description:
---
After upgrading to lvm2 2.02.00-1 and the required
libdevmapper1.02, the system was unable to complete booting,
as no LVs were reachable: the system was unusable and could not
be used to fix itself.
(The metadata is in lvm2 format.)

vgscan worked OK.
vgchange -a y was broken, spewing lots of:
device-mapper: one of name or uuid must be supplied, cmd(9)
device-mapper ioctl cmd 9 failed: Invalid argument
and finally claiming
18 logical volume(s) in volume group "base_vg" now active
However, they were not accessible and the boot process was
unable to finish.

vgchange -a n also failed:
device-mapper: one of name or uuid must be supplied, cmd(11)
device-mapper ioctl cmd 11 failed: Invalid argument
_deps: task run failed for (254:0)
Failed to add device (254:0) to dtree
device-mapper: one of name or uuid must be supplied, cmd(11)
device-mapper ioctl cmd 11 failed: Invalid argument
_deps: task run failed for (254:1)
Failed to add device (254:1) to dtree
...

dmsetup ls was OK.
dmsetup table showed only:
base_vg-usr:
base_vg-var:
...
i.e. the names were known, but the tables were missing.

Solution:

After downgrading to lvm2 2.01.14-3 (and thus libdevmapper1.02)
the system worked again.

To archive this, a rescue system was needed, as /usr/ (apt-get)
and /var/ (apt/sources.list) etc. were all unreachable.

Note:

I am not 100% sure if it is libdevmapper1.02 or lvm2, however,
lvm2 Version 2.01.14-3 works with:
rm /lib/libdevmapper.so.1.01
ln -s /lib/libdevmapper.so.1.02 /lib/libdevmapper.so.1.01
Thus the problem probably is within lvm2 v2.02.00-1.

Hmmm... it looks a bit strange. Maybe it is a header or compiler problem
since you pointed out that an older version works until you recompile it.

Anybody has an idea?

2005-12-02 Thread Jose Carlos Garcia Sogo

Sorry for the delay with fixing these. I have been completely out of
free time lately (letely meaning 4 months or so ;-). Renaming stuff was
yet included in our SVN repo, but following Matthias patch.

I will take a look at those other patches, and I will try to have them
uploaded tomorrow evening.

 Thanks for your work!

Bug#341762: wxglade: Menu bars vanish when saving

2005-12-02 Thread Daniel Werner
Package: wxglade
Severity: critical
Justification: causes serious data loss

When saving a .wxg with wxGlade, the menu bar is sometimes not saved.
Everything inside of ... -- including the
tag itself, as well as 1 -- is lost.

The criteria for this bug to show up elude me. It might have got something to
do with whether the menu bar's frame was displayed (double-clicked) during the
session, or not.

This bug had really severe impact on a project I am working on for
a commercial company. Fortunately, I had a backup ready, and keep one all the
time now. Hope this is fixed in 0.4.

Bug#341766: firefox: FTBFS: Not using -fPIC to make shared lib.

2005-12-02 Thread Kurt Roeckx
Package: firefox
Version: 1.4.99+1.5rc3.dfsg-2
Severity: serious

Hi,

Your package is failing to build on a few arches because it's not
using -fPIC to make a shared library.

On amd64:
gcc -Wall -W -Wno-unused -Wpointer-arith -Wcast-align -Wno-long-long -pthread
-pipe -DNDEBUG -DTRIMMED -pipe -w -O2 -fPIC -shared -Wl,-h -Wl,libmozjs.so -o
libmozjs.so jsapi.o jsarena.o jsarray.o jsatom.o jsbool.o jscntxt.o jsdate.o
jsdbgapi.o jsdhash.o jsdtoa.o jsemit.o jsexn.o jsfun.o jsgc.o jshash.o

/usr/bin/ld: jsapi.o: relocation R_X86_64_PC32 against `memset@@GLIBC_2.2.5' ca
n not be used when making a shared object; recompile with -fPIC

Or hppa:
c++  -fno-rtti -fno-exceptions -Wall -Wconversion -Wpointer-arith -Wcast-align
-Woverloaded-virtual -Wsynth -Wno-ctor-dtor-privacy -Wno-non-virtual-dtor
-Wno-long-long -fshort-wchar -pthread -pipe -DNDEBUG -DTRIMMED -pipe -w -O2

not be used when making a shared object; recompile with -fPIC
/usr/X11R6/lib/libXt.a: could not read symbols: Bad value

But in this case I have to wonder why it's picking the
static libXt instead of the shared version.

Note that the 3 objects (npshell.o printplugin.o npunix.o)
all seem to come from .c files, but for some reason it's
linking it with c++?

An other interesting error (on powerpc) is:

go in subdir i386 for regular Intel version

thanks a lot

Tags: sarge
Justification: root security hole

Dear Ola,

I found the util-vserver in sarge can not pass the test 109 and 121 of
testfs.sh script[1] which provide by upstream author. After more tests,
upstream author discoveried this is a security hole.

109 verifies that barrier was removed correctly, while 121 checks that
it was set correctly.

This bug is kernel-patch-vserver related, I have filed a bug to
kernel-patch-vserver that you may have a look.

Here is what I did in my tests:
# dd bs=1024k count=1024 if=/dev/zero of=1gb.test
# losetup /dev/loop4 ./1gb.test
# ./testfs.sh -l -t -D /dev/loop4 -M /mnt

PS. I confirmed the kernel-patch-vserver + linux-source-2.6.12 +
util-vserver in sid are passed the test of testfs.sh

Dear Kevin

you asked about the licensing status of the FLUKA parts inside CERNLIB
in october 2002. After our exchange of messages, I understood that those
parts were not supposed to be kept into the CERNLIB version released for
Debian etc due to license incompatibilities. Somebody has pointed out
that, due to a misunderstanding, still significant portions are included
in the distributed files, in particular the routines

(I could have missed some of the routines/include files) and that this
has been propagated to other packages (like the cernlib one in Fedora
extras) born out of the Debian-distributed Cernlib.

The likely reason for this qui-pro-quo is that those routines were in the
"peanut" directory and not in the "fluka" one. However Peanut is the
name of the Fluka intermediate energy generator and it is part of Fluka.
It was kept in a separate directory only for practical reasons.

Would it be possible to fix this (I suppose you don't want to keep them
in) and clarify that those files were not GPL'ed, but rather subject to
the Fluka license (that INFN and CERN eventually painfully agreed within
the
framework of a Collaboration Agreement signed in december 2003)?
The impact on users will be zero, since without the "fluka" directory
files peanut could not run.

I appreciated the clear explaination you put inside the doc files.

 best regards
Alfredo Ferrari

Bug#341773: segfaults (!) when processing previously valid group files

2005-12-02 Thread Daniel Stone
Package: libnss-db
Version: 2.2.3pre1-1
Severity: critical
Justification: smashes entire system with WORLD-ENDING levels of breakage

Hi,
Using libnss-db from sid results in some rather, er, unpleasant
behaviour. With the group files below, and 'group: compat db' in
nsswitch.conf, anything that attempts to deal with groups, segfaults.
This includes OpenSSH (so not even root can log in), and su. The end
result is that you better well have rockin' remote management so you can
reboot your machine and boot with init=/bin/sh.

Downgrading to libnss-db 2.2-6.3 works just fine.

This is the backtrace generated with libc6-dbg:
(gdb) bt f
#0 *__GI__nss_files_parse_grent (
line=0x7fb3f6
"jrfonseca,kaleb,ago,stukreit,cworth,keithp,clee,kem,branden,jkolb,doursse,jkj,bogdand,sndirsch,jbarnes,mhopf,spyderous,aplattner,benh,philipl",
 result=0x7fb6b0, data=0x7fb260, datalen=1024,
errnop=0x622c72656e747461) at files-parse.c:208
list = (char **) 0x7fb660
p = Variable "p" is not available.
(gdb) print *data
$7 = {linebuffer = 0x7fb260 "xorg"}
(gdb) print *result
$8 = {gr_name = 0x7fb260 "xorg", gr_passwd = 0x7fb265 "x",
  gr_gid = 801, gr_mem = 0x7fb290}
(gdb) print **list
$9 = 0 '\0'
(gdb) print *errnop

Notice how errnop in particular seems to be wildly off.

Also, I don't claim to know the internals of exactly how it works, but
line is badly truncated; this is the original:

Making it build-depend on ocaml-nox-3.09.0 fixes this problem.

About this, I am sure we were doing that for a reason, but I cannot

It's much more likely that this was done without fully thinking out how
those files will be used. When linking, only the .so file is used; at
runtime, only the file which matches the SONAME that was linked against is
used. If these files are symlinks, then any files needed to resolve these
links to real files must *also* be included in the package. But other
symlinks *to* these files serve no purpose.

so if the soname was libpt.so.1, you would need

libpt.so.1 -> libpt.so.1.8.7
libpt.so.1.8.7

in the lib package. If it was libpt.so.1.8, you would need

libpt.so.1.8 -> libpt.so.1.8.7
libpt.so.1.8.7

But since libpt.so.1.8.7 is the soname, and that file isn't a symlink,
everything else except the .so link is extraneous.

Cheers,

beep-media-player requires libid3-3.8.3c2. However, apt says '[n]o
candidate version found for libid3-3.8.3c2'. The library has been
removed and is now called libid3-3.8.3c2a. The lack of required
library renders beep-media-player incapable of being installed. I
think beep-media-player needs a rebuild against the newer library
version.

This suggests that the clisp package has been left in an inconsistent state
in the buildd chroot. This typically points to a serious error in the
postrm of the missing package.

Please contact the ia64 buildd maintainer for help in resolving this.

Ugh.

1.0.7174 requires a patch to make it work. I haven't included it yet but
you can find the amd64 one at
http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=50150
Kernels about 2.6.12-rc require it.

You could also try 1.0.7676 from
http://people.debian.org/~rdonald/nvidia
if they support your card.

Hmmm... I am lost in LaTeX world.

Current debiandoc-sgml has functionality to modify generated latex file
using messy but simple shell script called fixlatex. The default symple
one is in debiandoc-sgml but the most elaborate one is in
debian-reference.

As I reviewed this cutomized bin/fixlatex in debian-reference, I was
surprized how it grew so much.

It looks like we can add this there.

As I have been updating debiandoc-sgml, I can fix some bugs from here
too. (I have to be careful not to break previous work arounds.)
That is to fix files in tools/lib/Format in the source tree of
debiandoc-sgml and there is LaTeX.pm is good candidates. For this
issue, I do not know which is better.

My question is:

Is this issue caused by other broken package? (it seems YES.)

If this broken package is fixed, having workaround implimented cause
problem? or some missing featues? How serious?

Should all debiandoc-sgml based package get this fix?

Thanks for your help.

Osamu

PS: If either of you think having CVS access to debiandoc-sgml
(http://alioth.debian.org/projects/debiandoc-sgml/) or debian-reference
(project: qref.sourceforge.net), let me know your account there.

PS2: As I see some locale based issues such as usepackage{babel}...
this LaTeX.pm was better place to fix but I did not dare to do so back
then.

I accidently double-clicked the Firefox titlebar a few too many times
and it suddently crashed. Now, whenever I try to launch it, I get the
following error:

The program 'Gecko' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadDrawable (invalid Pixmap or Window parameter)'.

Same thing for Thunderbird as well.

Bug#340384: net-tools: arp Bus Error

2005-12-02 Thread Jurij Smakov

Hi,

As explained by Steve Langasek (thanks a lot!), this bug is a result of a
recent change in gcc, which has switched from using glibc's memcpy() to an
optimized inline memcpy() routine, which takes advantage of the knowledge
about the alignment of source and destination, which gcc is tracking. In
that case the cast from sockaddr to sockaddr_in is a problem. The sockaddr
structure consists of a short (2 bytes) and an array of 14 chars, so it is
allowed to be aligned (and is, in fact, aligned) on the 2-byte boundary,
while the largest element of sockaddr_in is 4 bytes, so it is expected to
be aligned on a 4-byte boundary. This alignment mismatch is what causing a
bus error. According to Steve, C language specification makes such a cast
illegal, so it needs to be fixed.

Best regards,

Jurij Smakov[EMAIL PROTECTED]
