Bug#357623: thunderbird: myspell recommends should be depends

2006-03-18 Thread Ray Kohler
Package: thunderbird
Version: 1.5-4
Severity: serious
Justification: Policy 3.5

The recommendation of a myspell dictionary should be a hard dependency.
Without a dictionary installed, it is impossible to compose messages,
even if you turn off all spelling-related options. An error
dialog appears when you try to open a compose window. It reads:

An error occurred while creating a message compose window. Please try
again.

Bug#352479: ifplugd will not run after latest upgrade on testing

2006-03-18 Thread Eric Evans
On Sat, Mar 18, 2006 at 04:48:53PM +1000, Jonathan Hepburn muttered these words:
On 3/17/06, Eric Evans [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:
The ifplugd daemon doesn't read this file, it is sourced by the init
script. I'm betting that if you invoke ifplugd with -i interface -q -f
  -u0 -d10 -w -I you'll find that it works. This obviously isn't what you
want though, it's supposed to be started/stopped automatically, so ...

Yes, actually, that does run. It doesn't work entirely properly,
though. As in, it will bring the interface up automatically, but will
 not close it.

First, try starting it up like like so:

   /etc/init.d/ifplugd start interface

 No: Usage: /etc/init.d/ifplugd
 {start|stop|restart|force-reload|status|suspend|resume} No option for
 arguments.

You need to specify the additional argument of the interface name for
interfaces that fall under HOTPLUG_INTERFACES, (which is all of them in
  your config).

If that fails, then try ...

   sh -x /etc/init.d/ifplugd start interface

... which will produce lots of output which you should paste in your
  response to this message.

 Okay then:

 + CFG=/etc/default/ifplugd
 + IFPLUGD=/usr/sbin/ifplugd
 + test -x /usr/sbin/ifplugd
 ++ id -u
 + '[' 0 '!=' 0 ']'
 + '[' -f /etc/default/ifplugd ']'
 + . /etc/default/ifplugd
 ++ INTERFACES=
 ++ HOTPLUG_INTERFACES=all
 ++ ARGS='-q -f -u0 -d10 -w -I'
 ++ SUSPEND_ACTION=stop
 + VERB=usb0
 + shift
 + '[' 0 -ne 0 ']'
 + '[' x = xauto -o x = xall ']'
 + case $VERB in
 + echo 'Usage: /etc/init.d/ifplugd
 {start|stop|restart|force-reload|status|suspend|resume}'
 Usage: /etc/init.d/ifplugd
 {start|stop|restart|force-reload|status|suspend|resume}
 + exit 1

This looks suspiciously like the first argument to the init script was
usb0. If your interface is usb0, make sure you are using:

  sh -x /etc/init.d/ifplugd start usb0

Now, if /etc/init.d/ifplugd start interface *does* work, then run ...

   ACTION=add INTERFACE=interface sh -x /etc/hotplug.d/net/ifplugd.hotplug

... which again will produce lots of output which you should paste/attach
  in reply to this mail.

Skipped this part, for reasons outlined above.

Let's go ahead and try it. If your interface is usb0, make sure ifplugd
is not running and invoke:

  ACTION=add INTERFACE=usb0 sh -x /etc/hotplug.d/net/ifplugd.hotplug

Note: make sure that you substitute interface with the name of your
interface in all the commands listed above.

 Ah, yes :)

Now, here's another thing: For some reason related to kernel upgrades,
I now have a 'zaurus' kernel module. At the moment, not having worked
out the automatic loading/unloading (no real time ATM), I load it by
hand, not wishing to dump it into /etc/modules and forget about it. It
therefore stays loaded regardless of whether or not it's needed. Does
ifplugd care about modules coming and going as required?

This doesn't sound like it would be a problem.

The german locale m-f-locale-de-de is not installable on my system. I
have ff 1.5 installed but the locale depends on:

m-ff = 1.0-3 and m-ff 1.0.999

So this (and all other) locales are not installable.

Maybe I should have filled this report against the german locale package
but it seems to touch every locale for firefox.

This message appears only the first time after the upgrade. Closing

the locale is still not activated (I still have the English interface).
Looking at the extensions-window, the locale is there and no error
shown, but the locale itself is still not working.

I've tested it with the French locale too -- same problem. So I guess it
applies to all other locales in *-locales-all too and reopen the bug.

So, this is already known and being worked on. Thanks for the trouble

Hi!

Today while doing an aptitude dist-upgrade, I saw:

  mozilla-firefox-locale-pt-br: Depends: mozilla-firefox ( 1.0.999) but
  1.5.dfsg-1 is to be installed.

Whould be good if mozilla-firefox-locale-all could be upgraded to support
this new version of Firefox.

Thank you very much

This message appears only the first time after the upgrade. Closing
Firefox and starting it again, does not show this warning anymore. But
the locale is still not activated (I still have the English interface).

Attached is the diff for the NMU I'm planning on doing on sourcenav in a
few minutes. It closes two RC bugs in the package.

The actual .diff.gz of the source package is going to be bigger, because
I had to regenerate two configure scripts, and that changed lots of line
number, even if no actual interesting changes happened apart from the
ones in this diff.

Hi,
After install this package, firefox is still in English. The first time
you launch it you'll get a dialog titled Chrome Registration Failed

Firefox could not install this item because of a failure in Chrome

True. I don't use the loopback interface for connecting to squid from
user clients, so I don't have that ambiguity.

You can usually differentiate between clients and squid-prefetch by the
log line itself. The first access by squid-prefetch will always be a
TCP_HIT/200 or TCP_MISS/504 (I think it's 504). After that will be the
prefetches.

Or... just run it from the command line so you can see STDOUT.

Bug#350739: cdrtools: GPL violation - makefiles distributed under non-GPL-compatible license??

2006-03-18 Thread Eduard Bloch
#include hallo.h
* Joerg Schilling [Sat, Mar 18 2006, 07:16:46PM]:
 Eduard Bloch [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

If the GPL is a free license acording to the Debian Social Contract
there is no need to do this..

Joerg, please stop that. You have already proved by your recent actions
that you DO NOT understand the GPL. Don't try to justify your claims
with another document that is neither understood by you nor is really
  your business.

 Eduard, please stop your FUD.

I see no FUD. Please look in a lexicon for the usual meaning of this
term.

You did write (easy to proof as) false claims many times in the past.
Just remember the case where you did call Sun Studio C rubbish just because
it flags bad code that GCC let's pass.

He? I cannot remember writting this, and I would not use the word
rubbish.

Take it as a fact that nobody will believe you unless you proove your claims
 with real facts.

Do you have an answer robot? What exactly did I claim that could not
prooved easily or has already been prooved? Or do you refer to some old
(or even incorrect) memory, including the rubbish Sund Studio C
mentioned above? WTF?

Note that the Schily Makefilesystem is a different work and just
   published
together the rest of the cdrtools. If the GPL _really_ insists in
   polluting

I reallize that. Guess why I suggested double-licensing.

Guess why I did suggest that you should find someone to explain you the
 background.

Have a look at http://www.us.debian.org/social_contract and try to understand
what section 9. License Must Not Contaminate Other Software means:

The license must not place restrictions on other software that is
distributed along with the licensed software. For example, the license
must not insist that all other programs distributed on the same medium
 must be free software.

In our case, the medium is the tar archive that is used to publish cdrtools.

Hear, hear. And what does the file COPYING with the GPL license text
do there, in the main directory of your medium? Is it not supposed to
cover the whole thing, as in placing restrictions on other software?
YOU placed the license file there and I interpret your statement as a
direct proposal to separate the split the package into the code and
build system parts. Correct?

But before you do that, it would make sense to think whether the claims of
 the
 OP make sense at all.

If you follow the extreme GPL-interpretation of the OP you are clearly
violating the GPL and any contributor to cdrtools has the right to sue
you. I do not read it that way and I know your role in the cdrtools
development, but you do not make it easy :-(

Note that the CDDL as used for the Schily Makefilesystem gives more freedom to
the users of the cdrtools than the other projects that are covered under the
 GPL.

Sorry, http://www.gnu.org/licenses/license-list.html presents it in a
different light. However, it only refers to linking. I will ask our
legal group for further details.

Eduard.

Bug#350739: cdrtools: GPL violation - makefiles distributed under non-GPL-compatible license??

2006-03-18 Thread Joerg Schilling
Eduard Bloch [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

You did write (easy to proof as) false claims many times in the past.
Just remember the case where you did call Sun Studio C rubbish just
  because
it flags bad code that GCC let's pass.

He? I cannot remember writting this, and I would not use the word
 rubbish.

Let me quote you:

Das behauptest du EINFACH SO, weil dein Compiler ein Paar irrevelevante
Meldungen ausgespuckt hast? Amen.

Looks similar to what I had in mind.

Have a look at http://www.us.debian.org/social_contract and try to
  understand
what section 9. License Must Not Contaminate Other Software means:

The license must not place restrictions on other software that is
distributed along with the licensed software. For example, the license
must not insist that all other programs distributed on the same medium
  must be free software.

In our case, the medium is the tar archive that is used to publish
  cdrtools.

Correct?

???

But before you do that, it would make sense to think whether the claims of
  the
  OP make sense at all.

If you follow the extreme GPL-interpretation of the OP you are clearly
violating the GPL and any contributor to cdrtools has the right to sue
you. I do not read it that way and I know your role in the cdrtools
development, but you do not make it easy :-(

Nice to see: Now we are back to the content of my first mail.

Iff Debian would follow the extreme GPL-interpretation of the OP, Debian would
need to call the GPL clearly non-free because it then would violate the DFSG
Section 9.

As Debian calls the GPL free, the claims of the OP obviously do not
apply from Debians view.

So let us close this for now, or do you like to start an endless discussion?

Sorry, http://www.gnu.org/licenses/license-list.html presents it in a
different light. However, it only refers to linking. I will ask our
 legal group for further details.

Do you _really_ like to believe the claims from people that at the same
server call the GFDL a free license?

The CDDL is clearly accepted by OSI and I did not yet hear that Debian
DFSG rules have become different from the OSI rules.

Why should Debian have problems with the CDDL?

 Hi

Your package FTBFS because libgdal1-dev is not available (anymore). You
might want to update the build dependency to libgdal1-1.3.1-dev.

libgdal1-1.3.1-dev provides libgdal1-dev now. I'll update the dependency
on the next upload anyway. (Or perhaps I shouldn't, since it seems more
specific than libgdal1-dev and therefore more prone to change?)

thanks

Package doesn't provide chrome.manifest file (in
/usr/lib/firefox/extensions/[EMAIL PROTECTED]) making
polish translation unusable. Also chrome/chromelist.txt is missing, but
it probably isn't required.

Manual installing polish langpack (from http://firefox.pl) solves
problem for one user. Copying chrome.manifest (from
~/.mozilla/firefox/*/extensions) to
/usr/lib/firefox/extensions/[EMAIL PROTECTED] solves
problem for all users in my system.

Probably also other langpacks built from the same source are broken.
I'll provide path to debian/rules if the time permits.

The buildds will not try to install virtual packages. It will only
install real packages... So you could change the build-dep to
libgdal1-1.3.1-dev | libgdal1-dev, though that would only serve people
who want to backport.

Argh, that old bug. OK, you're right.

apt-get build-dep xastir does the right thing, so I don't know why the
buildds don't use that command instead.

Bug#357439: amaya does not start--The program 'amaya' received an X Window System error.

2006-03-18 Thread Regis Boudin
Hi Andrea,

After a kernel update making amaya crash and further tests, I tend more
and more to think the problem comes from the use of Mesa.

Could you please let me know you configuration, especially :
-which video driver you use
-if you use the DRI

For the record, in my case :
-with the nvidia proprietary driver, no problem
-with the radeon driver and DRI, it run with display bugs
-with the radeon driver but no DRI, it crashes.

I will continue investigating the problem...

amaya does not start. I received the following error message:

The program 'amaya' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadMatch (invalid parameter attributes)'.
(Details: serial 20807 error_code 8 request_code 144 minor_code 5)
(Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line
option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error()
  function.)

I don't remember this being the case. I'm pretty sure they are able to pick
a package at random to satisfy a build-dep on a virtual package; this just
usually isn't what you want.

The thing they *won't* do is evaluate options after a '|'; so if you need
the buildd to install a package for you, it has to be listed as the first
option in the or'ed list. And of course, versioned Build-Depends can never
be satisfied by a virtual package.

Bug#357623: verified

2006-03-18 Thread Andres Salomon

Hi,

What this actually looks like in strace is:

[pid 16204] open(/usr/lib/thunderbird/components/myspell,
O_RDONLY|O_NONBLOCK|O_LARGEFILE|O_DIRECTORY) = -1 ENOENT (No such file
or directory)

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ ls -l /usr/lib/thunderbird/components/myspell

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ ls -l
/usr/lib/thunderbird/components/../../../share/myspell/dicts
ls: /usr/lib/thunderbird/components/../../../share/myspell/dicts: No
such file or directory

As the original bug reporter mentioned, it's impossible to compose a msg
w/out myspell installed. Once I grabbed myspell-en-us, thunderbird
appears much happier.

Bug#357702: axiom: Some binaries statically linked with old libXpm.a

2006-03-18 Thread Igor Khavkine
Package: axiom
Version: 20050201-1
Severity: grave
Tags: security
Justification: user security hole

The following binaries were statically linked agains libXpm.a from
a version of libxpm-dev predating 4.3.0.dfsg.1-14.

/usr/lib/axiom-20050201/bin/hypertex
/usr/lib/axiom-20050201/lib/view2D

As such, they exhibit behavior described in Bug #308783, which breaks
the display of images in the HyperDoc system and is a possible security
problem. I'm giving this report the same severity as #308783.

The fix is simple. It only requires a recompile against a newer version
of libxpm-dev. Strangely enough, the view3D binary, located in the same
directory as the view2D one is unaffected since it is dynamically linked
against libXpm.so. No other binaries in the axiom packages seem to
statically link with libXpm.a.

Igor

Bug#352834: abuse: Cannot climb ladders

2006-03-18 Thread Petter Reinholdtsen

severity 352834 normal
retitle 352834 abuse: Cannot climb ladders on amd64
thanks

For a bug to have grave severity, it need to be unusable or mostly so,
cause data loss or provide a local security problem. This bug is
neither. It does not break policy (so serious is also not fit), and
it does not really have a major effect on the usability (so important
isn't fit either). It affects the usability of the program, and that
deserves 'normal' severity. Because of this I am reducing it to that
level is this isn't an RC bug the release managers need to worry
about. It is enough that the package maintainer worry about it.

Friendly,

Bug#357571: toursst: conflicted with by the new python-twisted-core

2006-03-18 Thread Steve Langasek
Package: toursst
Version: 0.0.3
Severity: grave

The latest toursst package is uninstallable in unstable, due to a conflicts:
from the python-twisted-core package:

Package: toursst
Version: 0.0.3
Depends: python (= 2.3), python ( 2.4), python-twisted ( 1.1.0)

Package: python-twisted
Version: 2.2.0-1
Depends: [...] python-twisted-core (= 2.1), [...]

Package: python-twisted-core
Version: 2.2.0-1
Conflicts: [...] toursst (= 0.0.3ubuntu1), [...]

Since there's no mention in the changelog of why the versioned conflicts was
added, I have no idea if you're expected to make some changes in the package
when rebuilding it. As such, this may actually be a twisted bug rather than
a toursst bug, I don't know. If it is, please reassign it appropriately.

In the meantime, toursst is the only thing currently holding twisted 2.2.0
out of testing, so I'm going to go ahead and remove it to let the twisted
update go through.

Thanks,

I think that there's still a bug here that's worth fixing, in that amule
gave a very non-obvious explanation for the failure. But yes, that's not
release-critical, so downgrading.

 Subject: kernel panic with libc6-2.3.6-2
 Package: libc6

 Justification: breaks the whole system

 Hello,

 Hi!

Each week I try out the progress of Etch, and yesterday
 I upgraded libc6 (and libc6-amd64) from 2.3.5-13 to 2.3.6-2

I suppose you mean sid here, Etch still has libc6 2.3.5-13.

 * and continued working successfully with no problems*
Today I boot my PC resulting in a kernel panic at boot (repeatedly,
at the same location, reproducibly). Something about not being able
to locate the root device. Since this is on a S-ATA disk on a
MSI motherboard with nforce3 chipset that I had serious trouble with
in the past (changing the names of its disks from hde5 - sda5 and back)
I tried both booting with option root=/dev/sda5 and with root=/dev/hde5
 to no avail.

Would it be possible to send a copy of the boot log, without that, it
will be really difficult to debug the problem.

It took me quite a while to figure out what it was that broke
 the system.
Kernel 2.6.15 failed to boot; in an older kernel 2.6.8 on the
same hardware the system booted fine.

downgrading libc6 from 2.3.6-2 to 2.3.5-13 solved the problem.

Have you regenerated the initrd image after downgrading this package? It
is the only place where libc6 is used _before_ the root filesystem is
 mounted.

Have you made any other changes when downgrading?

I'm really sorry that I can't pinpoint the problem better... good luck!!
 Frits

PS: I've also installed udev 0.084-5, hal 0.5.6-4 and dbus 0.60.5 in case
 that's of any help..

Are you sure udev is not the cause of your problems? Looks more probable.

No news from bug submitter for 2 weeks, and we received no similar
feedback, thus lowering the severity of this bug. Frits, if you
do not give informations requested by Aurelien, there is nothing we
can do to help you and we will have to close this bugreport.
Thanks.

Denis

Remco Seesink wrote:
Isn't the stable version of firebird affected by this bug?
Then there should be an DSA.

I wrote to [EMAIL PROTECTED] and the conclusion is that these
buffer overflows are not security threat since there are no SxID binaries.

My argument was that IF local admin made something SxID then he is
vulnerable, explaining when and why SGID fb_lock_manager was necessary.
Martin Schulze replied that if we're supposed to save local sysadmin
from himself, then we should remove 'rm' and 'mkfs' from the system too :)

Given this and the fact that there are no SxID binaries in the default
install (sarge/etch/sid), we decided update of stable is unnecessary.

Looking once more on http://www.securityfocus.com/archive/1/427480,
where the patches are, buffer overrun in fbserver/fb_inet_server may
happen if:

- - fbserver/fb_inet_server is started with specially crafted command line
parameters. since there is no way to control this for the installed
init.d scripty or [x]inetd config (except for root), this is not
exploitable neither locally, nor remotely.

- - special crafted TEMP_DIR environment variabble. Same case as above.
Not modifyable, except by root, and thus not exploitable.

I guess the 'security' tag is not necessary anymore (I put it just as a
warning), but since the bug is closed,

BTW, looking at some automated code autiding results (can't find the
url) for firebird, I am very glad that there are no SxID binaries there.
Firebird code is like spaghetti, ganished with swiss cheese :)

Oh, wait! There is a remotelly reproducible crash with 1.5.2, as
demonstrated in
http://sourceforge.net/mailarchive/forum.php?thread_id=9954078forum_id=6330
I've just crashed my 1.5.2 superserver (on amd64 that is).

Alright, another bugreport is on its way, this time for real...

Bug#349209: boost: Boost Graph Library is non-free and undistributable in compiled form

2006-03-18 Thread Steve Langasek
severity 349209 important
thanks

It's my understanding that the code in the existing package is now covered
completely by the Boost Software License, meaning that it is distributable
and free. That means that this bug is not release-critical: AIUI, the
current copyright statement in the package is correct but incomplete (since
some parts currently listed under a different license are now *also*
available under the BSL), which isn't a reason to keep the package out of
the release.

Cheers,

Bug#357580: firebird2-*-server: remotelly crashable

2006-03-18 Thread Damyan Ivanov
Package: firebird2-super-server,firebird2-classic-server
Version: 1.5.3.4870-2
Severity: critical
Tags: security help
Justification: root security hole

As noted in [1], fbserver (the daemon listening for TCP, found in
firebird2-super-server, source package firebird2) crashes if given too
long database name. The crash occurs *before* authentication and thus
does not require knowledge of a valid database user/password.

[1]
https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detailatid=109028aid=1282031group_id=9028

securityfocus' advisory[2] claims version 1.5 is not vulnerable, but
I've just reproduced the crash using 1.5.2-10 that is in Debian/sarge
and etch. Upstream claimed[1] that this is fixed in 1.5.3, but I can
still reproduce it with 1.5.3.4870-2 from yesterday, which was supposed
to fix other (local) buffer overflows (see #357173).

[2] http://www.securityfocus.com/bid/10446/discuss

=== How to reproduce ===

$ gsec -database localhost:`perl -e'print (Ax300)'` \
  -user doesnt -passwd matter
invalid switch specified
error in switch specifications
Unable to complete network request to host localhost.
Error reading data from the connection.
unable to open database

Unable to complete network request usually means that the server has
crashed. And indeed, looking at /var/log/firebird.log gives:

amd64 (Client) Sat Mar 18 10:52:19 2006
 /usr/lib/firebird2/bin/fbguard: bin/fbserver terminated abnormally (-1)

So the server has crashed.

Same happens with firebird2-classic-server, only there is nothing in
firebird.log

I am yet to verify the pristine upstream builds (without debian patches)
and report it to upstream. Any help for these tasks from people knowing
firebird (preferably subscribed to firebird-devel) is warmly
appretiated.

Bug#348604: new endianness problem?

Upstream has released 0.9.6, which includes several endianness issues.

Can you please check whether the packages from

deb-src http://zg.debian.zugschlus.de/zg/pool/main/mhash/ /

Sorry, no powerpc binary packages at this time - I am trying to get
the package built on some big endian machines.

Bug#357589: libxul0d: newest update make epiphany and galeon crash on startup

2006-03-18 Thread Bart Vanhaute
Package: libxul0d
Version: 1.8.0.1-6
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

An update to this version of xulrunner makes galeon and epiphany crash
on startup. Perhaps they both need to rebuild, but I am filing against
the xulrunner because there seems nothing in the changelog that might
indicate a possible breakage.

This is a backtrace in galeon startup:

 deb-src http://zg.debian.zugschlus.de/zg/pool/main/mhash/ /

has a ready-to-build source package of 0.9.6, but only i386 binaries

Did it and ran gringotts.

Bug#350739: cdrtools: GPL violation - makefiles distributed under non-GPL-compatible license??

2006-03-18 Thread Joerg Schilling
The cdrtools distribution is compiled from several
different works.

One complete and separate work is the Schily Makefilesystem.
It is independent of a specific project and published under th CDDL.

If you believe that the GPL is violating the Debian Social Contract
(see http://www.us.debian.org/social_contract section 9), you should
send an alert to the Debian Legal list.

Bug#357589: libxul0d: newest update make epiphany and galeon crash on startup

An update to this version of xulrunner makes galeon and epiphany crash
on startup. Perhaps they both need to rebuild, but I am filing against
the xulrunner because there seems nothing in the changelog that might
 indicate a possible breakage.

Here, neither epiphany nor galeon crash. I test at least epiphany and
xulrunner with the mybrowser small app before any upload, especially
when I change some build stuff, which was the case but should not have
any influence.

Could you send an strace of your galeon ?

Mike
