Bug#348604: new endianness problem?
Upstream has released 0.9.6, which includes several endianness issues. Can you please check whether the packages from deb-src http://zg.debian.zugschlus.de/zg/pool/main/mhash/ / Sorry, no powerpc binary packages at this time - I am trying to get the package built on some big endian machines. I built and installed libmhash2_0.9.6-1_powerpc.deb and libmhash-dev_0.9.6-1_powerpc.deb. Then, I rebuilt and installed libgringotts1_1.2.1-9_powerpc.deb. gringotts (1.2.8+1.2.9pre1-11) now gives a Segmentation Fault (after having asked for the password). Do you think it is necessary to rebuild gringotts as well? Should I send some sort of a trace? The Debian unixodbc packages have deviated from this standard since before the sarge release, in order to provide libraries that are actually usable on 64-bit systems. However, owing to an upstream decision to favor standards-compliance over utility by default in this case, the headers did not by default declare this 64-bit-clean API; instead, they declared a 32-bit API that did not match the actual ABI presented by the unixodbc library. unixodbc 2.2.11-10 corrected this oversight on my part, by fixing the headers to export the proper 64-bit interface. The result is that ODBC-using packages which don't know to expect this 64-bit interface will now fail to build, as seen in this build log. The attached patch makes the necessary type changes from SQLINTEGER and SQLUINTEGER to SQLLEN and SQLULEN. Note that SQLLEN is a late addition to the ODBC standard, so its use will prevent rekall from building with older ODBC library versions; if this is a concern for your upstream, please let me know as I would be happy to help devise a patch that degrades gracefully for the sake of portability. reassign 357580 firebird2-super-server,libfbembed1 thanks Hi, Here's a patch that fixes the crash. The fix is rather ugly IMHO, but this is what upstream proposed. Bug#347490: FTBFS via runaway gawk
Hi, I've isolated the problem to the following test case: BEGIN { s = l = 2 while ( length(s) l ) s = s } The above causes an infinite loop with a UTF-8 locale (LC_CTYPE=en_US.UTF-8). Bug#357936: gnumeric: Uninstallable after binNMU.
Package: gnumeric Version: 1.6.2-3+b1 Severity: grave Justification: renders package unusable Despite the strict versioned dependency of gnumeric (arch: any) on gnumeric-common (arch: all), it has recently been binNMUed for the gsf transition. The new gnumeric packages now depend on a non-existent gnumeric-common (= 1.6.2-3+b1), and therefore are uninstallable in unstable at the moment. A sourceful upload is required to complete the transition. Regards, Daniel. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Just tetex-bin (3.0) should be fine. Any objections from TeX gurus? Please use tetex-bin ( 3.0 ) | texlive-base-bin so that it can be used (or at least tried) with texlive. Otherwise, you are right. Bug#357580: marked as done (firebird2-*-server: remotelly crashable)
Your message dated Mon, 20 Mar 2006 08:17:13 -0800 with message-id [EMAIL PROTECTED] and subject line Bug#357580: fixed in firebird2 1.5.3.4870-3 has caused the attached Bug report to be marked as done. (NB: If you are a system administrator and have no idea what I am talking about this indicates a serious mail system misconfiguration somewhere. Please contact me immediately.) Debian bug tracking system administrator (administrator, Debian Bugs database) ---BeginMessage--- Package: firebird2-super-server,firebird2-classic-server Version: 1.5.3.4870-2 Severity: critical Tags: security help Justification: root security hole As noted in [1], fbserver (the daemon listening for TCP, found in firebird2-super-server, source package firebird2) crashes if given too long database name. The crash occurs *before* authentication and thus does not require knowledge of a valid database user/password. [1] https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detailatid=109028aid=1282031group_id=9028 securityfocus' advisory[2] claims version 1.5 is not vulnerable, but I've just reproduced the crash using 1.5.2-10 that is in Debian/sarge and etch. Upstream claimed[1] that this is fixed in 1.5.3, but I can still reproduce it with 1.5.3.4870-2 from yesterday, which was supposed to fix other (local) buffer overflows (see #357173). [2] http://www.securityfocus.com/bid/10446/discuss === How to reproduce === $ gsec -database localhost:`perl -e'print (Ax300)'` \ -user doesnt -passwd matter invalid switch specified error in switch specifications Unable to complete network request to host localhost. Error reading data from the connection. unable to open database Unable to complete network request usually means that the server has crashed. And indeed, looking at /var/log/firebird.log gives: amd64 (Client) Sat Mar 18 10:52:19 2006 /usr/lib/firebird2/bin/fbguard: bin/fbserver terminated abnormally (-1) So the server has crashed. Same happens with firebird2-classic-server, only there is nothing in firebird.log I am yet to verify the pristine upstream builds (without debian patches) and report it to upstream. Any help for these tasks from people knowing firebird (preferably subscribed to firebird-devel) is warmly appretiated. --- dam -- System Information: Debian Release: testing/unstable APT prefers unstable APT policy: (500, 'unstable'), (500, 'stable'), (1, 'experimental') Architecture: i386 (i686) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Kernel: Linux 2.6.13+reiser4+dam.1 Locale: LANG=bg_BG.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=bg_BG.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Versions of packages firebird2-super-server depends on: ii adduser 3.85 Add and remove users and groups ii firebird2-server-common 1.5.3.4870-2 Common files for Firebird - an RDB ii libc6 2.3.6-3 GNU C Library: Shared libraries an ii libfbclient11.5.3.4870-2 Firebird client library ii libgcc1 1:4.0.3-1GCC support library ii libncurses5 5.5-1Shared libraries for terminal hand ii libstdc++6 4.0.3-1 The GNU Standard C++ Library v3 firebird2-super-server recommends no packages. ---End Message--- ---BeginMessage--- Source: firebird2 Source-Version: 1.5.3.4870-3 We believe that the bug you reported is fixed in the latest version of firebird2, which is due to be installed in the Debian FTP archive: firebird2-classic-server_1.5.3.4870-3_i386.deb to pool/main/f/firebird2/firebird2-classic-server_1.5.3.4870-3_i386.deb firebird2-dev_1.5.3.4870-3_i386.deb to pool/main/f/firebird2/firebird2-dev_1.5.3.4870-3_i386.deb firebird2-examples_1.5.3.4870-3_i386.deb to pool/main/f/firebird2/firebird2-examples_1.5.3.4870-3_i386.deb firebird2-server-common_1.5.3.4870-3_i386.deb to pool/main/f/firebird2/firebird2-server-common_1.5.3.4870-3_i386.deb firebird2-super-server_1.5.3.4870-3_i386.deb to pool/main/f/firebird2/firebird2-super-server_1.5.3.4870-3_i386.deb firebird2-utils-classic_1.5.3.4870-3_i386.deb to pool/main/f/firebird2/firebird2-utils-classic_1.5.3.4870-3_i386.deb firebird2-utils-super_1.5.3.4870-3_i386.deb to pool/main/f/firebird2/firebird2-utils-super_1.5.3.4870-3_i386.deb firebird2_1.5.3.4870-3.diff.gz to pool/main/f/firebird2/firebird2_1.5.3.4870-3.diff.gz firebird2_1.5.3.4870-3.dsc to pool/main/f/firebird2/firebird2_1.5.3.4870-3.dsc libfbclient1_1.5.3.4870-3_i386.deb to pool/main/f/firebird2/libfbclient1_1.5.3.4870-3_i386.deb libfbembed1_1.5.3.4870-3_i386.deb to pool/main/f/firebird2/libfbembed1_1.5.3.4870-3_i386.deb A summary of the changes between this version and the previous one is attached. Bug#357983: tetex-bin: mktexmf can't write new .mf files
Package: tetex-bin Version: 3.0-14 Severity: grave Hi ! I just discovered that mktexmf can't write to /var/cache/fonts (and below) anymore, making it impossible for any user to process LaTeX files requiring the generation of new font descriptions. An excerpt from the compilation log is given below: , | kpathsea: Running mktextfm ecsx0800 | mktextfm: Running mf-nowin -progname=mf \mode:=ljfour; mag:=1; nonstopmode; input ecsx0800 | This is METAFONT, Version 2.71828 (Web2C 7.5.4) | kpathsea: Running mktexmf ecsx0800 | /usr/bin/mktexmf: line 92: mf9738.tmp: Permission denied `- The workaround is to add the concerned user to the 'users' group in /etc/group. Indeed, this group has the s bit set for /var/cache/fonts and below. Note for the reader potentially suffering from this problem: adding you to this group is not enough. It is not even enough to start a new shell. You have to really login again (or maybe newgrp would suffice ?) for the change to take effect. Bug#356951: w9wm: incorrect binary location /usr/bin/X11/w9wm, should be /usr/bin
retitle 356951 w9wm: wrong path for x-window-manager alternative thanks Jari Aalto [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: Package: w9wm Version: 0.4.2-4 Severity: serious Incorrect binary location /usr/bin/X11/w9wm To clarify, the binary is in /usr/X11R6/bin (i.e. it doesn't violate Policy by installing into /usr/bin/X11 directly), and the package uses imake, which makes it exempt from the /usr/bin requirement: `Imake'-using programs are exempt because, as long as they are written correctly, the pathnames they use to locate resources and install themselves are derived wholly from the X Window System configuration. Thus, in the event that the X Window System moves to `/usr/X11R7/', `/usr/X12/', or just plain `/usr/', all that is required for these programs is a recompile against the corresponding X Window System library development packages. (The above is from Policy 11.8.7., Installation directory issues.) However, w9wm does indeed have a problem with the x-window-manager alternative: it registers itself as /usr/bin/w9wm instead of /usr/X11R6/bin/w9wm. Bug#357009: Inclusion of new texinfo.tex breaks other packages
Hi Norbert, On Sun, Mar 19, 2006 at 07:20:18PM +0100, Norbert Preining wrote: On Don, 16 Mär 2006, Karl Berry wrote: Yes, @ifset/@ifclear (among other things) are impossible to reliably parse in TeX :(. Perhaps that change introduced some bug which was later fixed but the fix introduced another one... Somewhere in that chain is the version which caused problems to you. Yes, the obvious comment is that I shouldn't have touched it. But it's sad to carry ugly crufty code, working only in certain situations, which cannot be described clearly. I think it was worth it to replace the code with something more consistent, even though it meant that some of the cases which happened to work before were broken (for the first iteration). Hope this explains it, Stepan

Did you read /usr/share/doc/tex-common/README.Debian? If not, would it have helped you understand the problem? Note for the reader potentially suffering from this problem: adding you to this group is not enough. It is not even enough to start a new shell. You have to really login again (or maybe newgrp would suffice ?) for the change to take effect. If somebody can explain this to me, I'm interested. That's how it's always been on UNIX systems. teTeX folks, I fear we have to revert this change and make the system insecure by default. I suggest that we change it only for fresh installations and leave unstable users to chmod -R. Comments? -- Frank Küster Single Molecule Spectroscopy, Protein Folding @ Inst. f. Biochemie, Univ. Not knowing the intricacies of Debian-ified Java and Openoffice.org, I couldn't have guessed what the exact problem was. Looking at the contents of the directory it was looking in, I was able to find (dpkg -L) the package 'java-gcj-compat'. Searching for related packages, I found another package called 'java-gcj-compat-dev'. On a guess, I aptitude install java-gcj-compat-dev, the above missing binary was symlinked to, and 'openoffice.org-gcj' configured itself sucessfully. The install of 'java-gcj-compat-dev' triggered a set of other packages to install: antlr ecj-bootstrap ecj-bootstrap-gcj gjdoc Any of these could have created the symlink. I think the dependency for openoffice.org-gcj needs to be updated to ensure whatever package created this symlink. Alternatively, perhaps a package that you do depend on *did not* create the symlink as it was supposed to. Either way, it was a problem for me. -- Charles Wilcox ---End Message--- ---BeginMessage--- Source: openoffice.org Source-Version: 2.0.2-2 We believe that the bug you reported is fixed in the latest version of openoffice.org, which is due to be installed in the Debian FTP archive: libmythes-dev_2.0.2-2_i386.deb to pool/main/o/openoffice.org/libmythes-dev_2.0.2-2_i386.deb libmythes-dev_2.0.2-2_powerpc.deb to pool/main/o/openoffice.org/libmythes-dev_2.0.2-2_powerpc.deb openoffice.org-base_2.0.2-2_i386.deb to pool/main/o/openoffice.org/openoffice.org-base_2.0.2-2_i386.deb openoffice.org-base_2.0.2-2_powerpc.deb to pool/main/o/openoffice.org/openoffice.org-base_2.0.2-2_powerpc.deb openoffice.org-calc_2.0.2-2_i386.deb to pool/main/o/openoffice.org/openoffice.org-calc_2.0.2-2_i386.deb openoffice.org-calc_2.0.2-2_powerpc.deb to pool/main/o/openoffice.org/openoffice.org-calc_2.0.2-2_powerpc.deb openoffice.org-common_2.0.2-2_all.deb to pool/main/o/openoffice.org/openoffice.org-common_2.0.2-2_all.deb openoffice.org-core_2.0.2-2_i386.deb to pool/main/o/openoffice.org/openoffice.org-core_2.0.2-2_i386.deb openoffice.org-core_2.0.2-2_powerpc.deb to pool/main/o/openoffice.org/openoffice.org-core_2.0.2-2_powerpc.deb openoffice.org-dev-doc_2.0.2-2_all.deb to pool/main/o/openoffice.org/openoffice.org-dev-doc_2.0.2-2_all.deb openoffice.org-dev_2.0.2-2_i386.deb to pool/main/o/openoffice.org/openoffice.org-dev_2.0.2-2_i386.deb openoffice.org-dev_2.0.2-2_powerpc.deb to pool/main/o/openoffice.org/openoffice.org-dev_2.0.2-2_powerpc.deb openoffice.org-draw_2.0.2-2_i386.deb to pool/main/o/openoffice.org/openoffice.org-draw_2.0.2-2_i386.deb openoffice.org-draw_2.0.2-2_powerpc.deb to pool/main/o/openoffice.org/openoffice.org-draw_2.0.2-2_powerpc.deb openoffice.org-evolution_2.0.2-2_i386.deb to pool/main/o/openoffice.org/openoffice.org-evolution_2.0.2-2_i386.deb openoffice.org-evolution_2.0.2-2_powerpc.deb to pool/main/o/openoffice.org/openoffice.org-evolution_2.0.2-2_powerpc.deb openoffice.org-filter-so52_2.0.2-2_i386.deb to pool/main/o/openoffice.org/openoffice.org-filter-so52_2.0.2-2_i386.deb openoffice.org-filter-so52_2.0.2-2_powerpc.deb to pool/main/o/openoffice.org/openoffice.org-filter-so52_2.0.2-2_powerpc.deb openoffice.org-gnome_2.0.2-2_i386.deb to pool/main/o/openoffice.org/openoffice.org-gnome_2.0.2-2_i386.deb

Didier: you can verify this with the 'groups' command. teTeX folks, I fear we have to revert this change and make the system insecure by default. I suggest that we change it only for fresh installations and leave unstable users to chmod -R. Comments? Well, that's sad---I find the current setup relatively sane. Didier: why don't you want your TeX users to be members of the 'users' group? That doesn't sound that insane. If I understand you correctly, Frank, you are proposing to give the current setup to fresh installations and have the stuff world-writable for those continuously upgrading, right? That would be a way to reduce complaints, for sure... -- Florent

Bug#350739: cdrtools: GPL violation - makefiles distributed under non-GPL-compatible license??
Eduard Bloch [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Jeez, you have ways of finding similarities. I would hardly translate that as rubbish especially because of the context - it has been on the same polemic levels as your claims about gcc because of beeing less pervasive than Sun's compiler. Even then, is that all of my false claims that you can find? Maybe you better your own ways of checking the correctness of a program? I still wonder how you can declare hidding of filename truncation okay, for example. Der Ton macht die Musike and I did not quote everything just to protect you What is so hard to understand? If you declare your source package as medium than it is okay to split it into atomic source packages with different license, following YOUR interpretation. In this case we have a build system package and a code package. But that code package does not have a component required to be built, which is required by the GPL! It seems that you never did read and understand the GPL :-( The GPL is as holey as a Swiss cheese when talking about the compile environment: - It requires scripts to be present, but makefiles are no scripts, they are just code in a different language. - Sources based on the Schily Makefilesystem require 'smake' to compile on all platforms. Smake is not part of the source packages and not required by the GPL. On some of the platorms GNU make may help you but as GNU make is extremely buggy, you will have problems on almost every platform although GNU make claims to run enywhere. GNU make is not even present on mostz platforms. - The GPL does not require the Compiler or other needed programs to be part of the sources although they may be needed. If you would understand enough from the topic, you would understand that the related makefiles of my software are always present under the same license as the rest of the project but the unrelated (because project indepentent) makefilesystem is just available under it's native license. Debian bug tracking system administrator (administrator, Debian Bugs database) ---BeginMessage--- Package: runit Version: 1.3.3-1 Severity: critical Tags: security Justification: root security hole Hi Gerrit, As I told you during lunch a few weeks ago, the chpst binary in the Sid package of runit behaves buggy regarding multiple groups in the -u parameter: $ strace -s 4096 -f /usr/bin/chpst -u nobody:ipod:nogroup:camera:mythtv/bin/sleep 1 21 | grep setgroups setgroups(4, [1006, 0, 65534, 0]) = 0 The 0 groups are wrong here, so the process gets permissions for the root group where is shouldn't! The correct group IDs look like this: $ grep -E ipod|nogroup|camera|mythtv /etc/group nogroup:x:65534: mythtv:x:110:scorpion ipod:x:1006:scorpion camera:x:1009:scorpion A chpst binary built using just make on my unstable system (which will be linked against glibc) behaves correctly: $ strace -s 4096 -f src/runit-1.3.3/admin/runit-1.3.3/src/chpst -u nobody:ipod:nogroup:camera:mythtv /bin/sleep 1 21 | grep setgroups setgroups32(4, [1006, 65534, 1009, 110]) = 0 I think the reason is that dietlibc handles the gid_t type as 16 bit on i386. In /usr/include/diet/sys/types.h, I found this: #elif defined(__arm__) || defined(__i386__) || defined(__sparc__) || defined(__s390__) /* make sure __s390x__ hits before __s390__ */ typedef uint16_t dev_t; typedef uint16_t gid_t; Whereas glibc uses 32 bit for gid_t on i386. In chpst, a struct uidgid will be used to build the list for setgroups, and it uses int for the groups: struct uidgid { int uid; int gid[61]; int gids; }; Therefore, on the little endian i386 architecture with dietlibc, the list of 32 bit values supplied by chpst will be threated as a list of 16 bit values in setgroups(), resulting in a 0 on each second list entry. I suggest to use gid_t in the struct uidgid to fix this. Since the admin can run update-menus at any time, there is no warranties /usr will be mounted read-write. Auto-generated files should be created in /var/lib/fvwm-crystal. This one time, at band camp, Martin Michlmayr said: * Steve Langasek [EMAIL PROTECTED] [2006-03-20 16:16]: Obviously, you're missing a dependency. Better yet, all the libs listed in the Libs: line of /usr/lib/pkgconfig/neon.pc ought to be moved to Libs.private... For those playing along at home, can you briefly explains wht Libs.private is? (Just out of interest.) pkconfig can make the distinction between libraries needed to link against, say, -lneon dynamically, and libraries need at run time (needed for, e.g., static linking, IIRC). The .private fields are for that second use case, and probably shouldn't be displayed for normal dynamic linking, as it creates spurious needed entries. Roughly, speaking, anyway - I still have to sort out some of the finer points of what pkconfig can do, myself, but I think that's the important part of it here. Bug#356988: pstotext: doesn't correctly quote characters to nested shell
Hello, I noticed your patch to this problem, so I decided to review it. It looks good to me. Other solutions are also possible, but your solution looks better. However, I notice the cleanup() routine still calls pclose(...). This has me puzzled because no errors are generated, so maybe the cleanup code isn't being called for some reason (it looks like gs==null???). I think pclose (which is documented only to work with popen) needs to be replaced with waitpid(...). This function should also perform the cleanup you were concerned about (not really a major issue with pstotext because it exits so quickly anyway - but it seems like a good idea to get the exit status). For this to work, you will need to save the PID returned by fork so cleanup can access it. As for VMS, this is something I have no idea what-so-ever about. I would assume it should work, but I have never been near a VMS system so I have no idea. (disclaimer: I am no expert at this either). Please CC responses to me, thanks. -- Brian May [EMAIL PROTECTED] -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Bug#349587: sudo: DSA946: omitting $HOME
In reply to bug 349729 Martin Schulze [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Please read the advisory again: http://www.debian.org/security/2006/dsa-946 It says: Additional variables are only passed through when set as env_check in /etc/sudoers, which might be required for some scripts to continue to work. [the advisory indicates only LC_*, LANG, LANGUAGE and TERM are passed through] [ The discussion is now merged into: http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=349587 ] Out of interest what was the rationale for omitting $HOME from this list? Omitting it (when -H and/or set_home and/or always_set_home isn't in effect to overwrite $HOME) results in an environment without $HOME set at all. Since $HOME is one of the variables set by login(1), and rarely stripped out, a lot of (interactive) programs assume that it'll be set. Most recently I've encountered issues with vim complaining that it can't read/write $HOME/.viminfo (due to passing the literal string '$HOME/.viminfo' to open(2), since there was no variable to do expansion on). Obviously as a work around we can all do: Defaults env_reset, env_check = HOME on every single system we use that runs Debian. But if there's a security issue involved in passing through $HOME then I think it should at least be documented so that we can be aware of it when deciding to either put this work around in place, or live with the warnings when doing sudo vim foo, etc. If there's no security issue then $HOME seems like an obvious candidate to add into the default whitelist. (The only other variable set by default by login(1) which isn't now set in the sudo sh environment is $MAIL, and that doesn't seem particularly important in the context of sudo.) Bug#349196: sudo: proposed fix seems okay (was Re: sudo: DSA946: omitting $HOME)

I see that the proposed update noted in bug 349196 (which unfortunately I missed before sending in my earlier comment) restores $HOME to the list of environment variables allowed by default. The Sarge package at: http://klecker.debian.org/~joey/security/sudo/ (referenced from http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=349196) seems to work for me, at least to resolve the issue I was having with vim and $HOME/.viminfo. Although curiously the extra variables allowed (HOME, LOGNAME, PATH, SHELL, TERM, DISPLAY, XAUTHORITY, XAUTHORIZATION, LANG, LANGUAGE, LC_*, and USER), don't appear in the sudo -V list of variables to check; only the original list of variables (in -1.3) appears there. Presumably this means they're being retained unconditionally which may or may not be desirable. Ewen -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble?
