Bug#361952: Please examine Bug#361952

2006-04-12 Thread Frank Küster
Kapil Hari Paranjape [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

 Hello,

The bug number 361952 has mystified me.

 A quick summary:

While installing tex4ht-common the update-texmf program is called but
it exits with an error saying /etc/texmf/texmf.d/05TeXMF.cnf cannot
 be found. (tex4ht and tex4ht-common depend on tetex-bin |
 texlive-base-bin)

As I responded to the submitter, I cannot imagine
how this bug happened and cannot reproduce it either.

I guess this must be a partially upgraded system, tex-common is
installed, but not yet configured properly, and tetex-bin (and probably
-base) is still at the old version. tetex-bin_2.0.2-31 means that he is
using testing, but testing has 3.0-* for ages.

Can you, the submitter, please try whether tex-common is somehow
configured:

dpkg -l tex-common
grep texmf.d /var/lib/ucf/hashfile

If the last commands gives a line with 05TeXMF.cnf, tex-common needs to
be purged, something has gone badly wrong.

Otherwise the submitter should just do

apt-get update

and then

dpkg --configure -a
apt-get -f install
apt-get dist-upgrade

and repeat these three commands until none of them does anything again.
After that, the problem should have disappeared.

Package: mailman
Version: 2.1.7-1
Severity: critical
Justification: breaks unrelated software, causes serious data loss

purging mailman deletes _all_ conffiles that are managed by ucf. all
with the meaning of all, including the ones that do not belong to the
mailman package.

This is most probably a bug in the postrm, since
sed -e ':/etc/mailman:!d' -e 's:^[0-9a-f]* *::' /var/lib/ucf/hashfile
lists all ucf-managed conffiles, not only the ones belonging to mailman.

I did not check whether this bug applies to mailman in sarge as well.

Greetings
Marc

Bug#360476: Bug #360476: celestia FTBFS

2006-04-12 Thread Daniel Schepler
This bug appears to have been a result of the gtkglext linkage problems -- I
saw it in my pbuildd chroot on i386 as well (where the glut build succeeded,
but the configure stage on the gnome build failed as shown in the bug
report). After the recent NMU of gtkglext I tried the build again and it
completed successfully.

So this bug can probably be closed now.

Bug#361995: evolution: same for appointments

2006-04-12 Thread Christian T. Steigies
Package: evolution
Version: 2.4.2.1-1
Followup-For: Bug #361995

I am experiencing a similar problem, for contacts/addressbook and
appointments/calendar. I have created a new addressbook/new calendar On
this Computer, however all new entries that I put into the newly created
one seem to be registered only in the first one that has been created after
the Personal one (when opening the contact/appointment). They show up in
each of them, so this does not help me sorting my adressbook or calendar, if
I have all entries in all addressbooks/calendars. If later created
addressbooks/calendars are only aliases to the one created first, I
understand this behaviour, but how can I use more addressbooks/calendars?

BTW right clicking on an appointment makes evolution quit unexpectedly,
also bug-buddy quits unexpectedly when I try to inform the developers.

I hereby reopen this bug, since I do not see that this problem is
 already solved.

Please stop playing bts pingpong giving other developers a wrong
impression on this package.

I've retitled this bug acordingly to what this bug is actually about.
This is not in any way severity 'grave', but rather 'minor'. Read the
following definitions on bug severities [1]

grave: makes the package in question unusable or mostly so, or causes data
loss, or introduces a security hole allowing access to the accounts of
users who use the package.

minor: a problem which doesn't affect the package's usefulness, and is
presumably trivial to fix.

I don't see how this issue makes this package unusable [2], nor what
part of existing debian policy this bug currenlty violates (which would
warrant severity 'serious'). Since we ship the init script in
usr/share/doc/wpasupplicant/examples along with ready to copy and paste
instructions how to activate it, I consider this issue easy to fix on
both user and maintainer side.

I'm currently not closing this bug since there is currently discussion
on [EMAIL PROTECTED] how to solve this issue. I
outlined there a solution which involves introducing a package, which is
about implementing the requested mode of operation, which was
undocumented before anyway. Since it is currently unclear if this will
go into this source packag or another one, I keep this bug open for now.

[1] http://www.debian.org/Bugs/Developer#severities
[2] http://blog.zugschlus.de/archives/372-wpa_supplicant.html

and do not delete any old config-files!

It has been renamed with .dpkg-old suffix. If you see a bug in our
maintainer scripts, feel free to file another bug, but please only with
exact upgrade path (please really state the involved versions of
wpasupplicant to reproduce the issue).

  - or at least ask while installation which mode should be used.
  - in the worst case you should leave the /etc/init.d file around and
change the mode of working only via /etc/default. So the admin would
also need to have to edit /e/d/wpasupplicant

I strongly object in leaving an init script around, which is not to be
used by default anyway. This only confuses new user of the package.

Gruesse,
Reinhard

Bug#362001: [security] Insecure semaphore permissions

2006-04-12 Thread Florian Weimer
* Steve Langasek:

A DoS does not normally qualify as a severity: grave security bug.

Why the sudden change in policy?

So far, only user-initiated denial-of-service conditions (e.g. editor

Bug#362049: libxfixes3: XFixesSetCursorName (no such operation)

2006-04-12 Thread Sven Hartge
Hi.

I don't think this to be a bug of gtk-engines-industrial, because the same
error occurs, if you for example use the whiteglass theme, which is a
part of xlibs-data.

The original submitter fixed this by removing gtk-engines-industrial,
because then the same thing happens as with my changes to the gconf-tree:
Gnome falls back to the default builtin cursor theme, which works without
problems.

So to me this indeed looks like a bug somewhere inside X.

S°

Bug#362125: gksu fails because it looks for xauth in wrong location

2006-04-12 Thread Andree Leidenfrost
Package: gksu
Version: 1.3.7-1
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

Hi Gustavo,

As of today, I can't use the synaptic menu entry in Gnome anymore.

Running the command in a ternimal gives:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ gksu -u root /usr/sbin/synaptic
sh: /usr/X11R6/bin/xauth: No such file or directory
sh: /usr/X11R6/bin/xauth: No such file or directory
Xlib: connection to :0.0 refused by server
Xlib: No protocol specified

(synaptic:7345): Gtk-WARNING **: cannot open display:

xauth is actually in /usr/bin/xauth now:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ dpkg -S xauth
xutils: /usr/bin/xauth_switch_to_sun-des-1
libpam-modules: /lib/security/pam_xauth.so
xbase-clients: /usr/share/man/man1/xauth.1x.gz
xbase-clients: /usr/bin/xauth

Creating the following link is a workaround for the problem:

ln -s /usr/bin/xauth /usr/X11R6/bin/xauth

The location of xauth may have changed in xbase-clients 1:7.0.0-1.

Maybe a fix would be to add /usr/bin/xauth to the places that gksu looks
for xauth or to just rely on the path to contain xauth in the first
place.

Please let me know in case more information is required.

Please note that #349652 may be related to this.

Best regards,
Andree

Bug#362049: Processed: reassign 362049 to libxfixes3

2006-04-12 Thread Silvestre Zabala
* Michel Dänzer [EMAIL PROTECTED] [2006-04-12 13:57]:

I think the problem is more likely in the X server. Downgrading
 libxfixes3 or xserver-xorg to 6.9.0.dfsg.1-6 should tell.

As already discussed on #debian-x, rebuilding libxfixes3 fixes the bug.

Best regards,
  Silvestre

Package: plplot-doc
Version: 5.3.1-9
Severity: grave

The plplot-doc package is uninstallable in unstable because plplot was
binNMUed for the hdf5 ABI change, and plplot-doc, an arch: all package, has
a dependency on libplplot9 (= 5.3.1-9) which no longer exists.

Arch: all - Arch: any strict versioned dependencies are fundamentally
incompatible with binNMUs. It's my understanding that the reason for this
particular dependency is so that plplot-doc and libplplot9 can share a
/usr/share/doc directory, which is also incompatible with binNMUs: an arch:
any package will have an additional changelog entry from the binNMU that
doesn't correspond to the arch: all package which hasn't been rebuilt.

Please consider making /usr/share/doc/plplot-doc a real directory and
dropping (or relaxing) the dependency on libplplot9.

Either way, plplot needs a sourceful upload for the hdf5 transition.

Please, remove zope-testcase package: it is included with zope2.8,
and zope2.7 will be soon removed from testing/unstable.

Done, note that this broke zope-plonetestcase.

Bug#361781: plplot-doc: uninstallable due to tight versioned dependency on liblplot9

2006-04-12 Thread Steve Langasek
reopen 361781
severity 361781 serious
thanks

Hi Rafael,

   * debian/control: Made the dependency of plplot-doc on libplplot9
 unversioned (closes: #361781)

Sorry, since you still have /usr/share/doc/plplot-doc as a symlink to
libplplot9, this is now a violation of policy section 12.3/12.7. The
/usr/share/doc/package/changelog.Debian.gz file must be the changelog for
the current version of package, and you can't ensure that with a symlink
if the dependency is weakened -- so you need to make
/usr/share/doc/plplot-doc its own directory and ship copies of the changelog
and copyright files.

Thanks,

Is hotplug installed?
Could you try with the standard Debian kernels?

ksynaptics doesn't build on i386 sid. Build typescript attached.

This isn't a bug in ksynaptics; the bug is in kdelibs4-dev, which needs to
be rebuilt against the new libxrender-dev now that it no longer ships
libXrender.la.

Package: libtasn1-2
Version: 0.3.1-1
Severity: grave

libtasn1-2 changed the so-name and must therefore change
the binary package name.

The conflict with libgnutls12 ( 1.3.5) was a nice try, but
it isn't correct and can cause breakge.

An example where this will break horribly:
$ objdump -p /usr/bin/gsasl
Dynamic Section:
...
  NEEDED libgnutls.so.12
  NEEDED libtasn1.so.2
...

You could conflict woth all package versions that do or did
depend on libtasn1-2, but even in the best case it is only as
good as a renaming of the library package.

Yes, due to the known shortcomings of testing such library
transitions are a pain for your release team, but this is the
only technically way to solve this properly, and the release
team has freely chosen to use testing despite it's known
shortcomings.

Hi,

(The purpose of this bugreport is mainly to get it fixed in stable.
Upload to unstable is pending.)

This time the security-related bug in firebird2 is DoS. The classic
flavour of the server (contained in libfbembed1) uses semaphore array
for IPC and creates this array with world-writable permissions. This
allows a local attacker to lock all semaphores in the array effectively
blocking further requests.

I post the bug in the BTS without privatelly discussion with the team,
since the vulnerability is published in upstreams bugtracker[1].

[1]
http://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php?func=detailaid=1466193group_id=9028atid=593943

A fix to the vulnerability is to create semaphores with 0660
permissions. The patch to unstable package is in
separate-file-and-sem-perms.dpatch[2]. Patch to stable package may be
based on it (stable implements part of it). I can also prepare an
interdiff for stable if you prefer.

[2]
http://svn.debian.org/wsvn/pkg-firebird/trunk/debian/patches/separate-file-and-sem-perms.dpatch?op=filerev=0sc=0

A note about Version: in stable the libfbembed1 package is named
libfirebird2-classic. The vulnerability is present in all 1.5 versions.

Ah, there is also one file created with 0666, but it is in
/var/run/firebird2, which is accessable for firebird:firebird only and
thus poses no threats.

Please tell me if I can be of some help.

Greetings, dam

Bug#362148: nvidia-glx depends on xserver-common which isn't in unstable anymore

2006-04-12 Thread Evgeni Golov
Package: nvidia-glx
Version: 1.0.8756-2
Severity: grave

Since the update to xorg 7.0 in unstable, there is no xserver-common
package anymore, but nvidia-glx depends on it. I think the dependency
should be changed to x11-common, which replaces xserver-common.

Evgeni

Bug#362149: xdm: GiveConsole/TakeConsole/Xsetup_0 missing

2006-04-12 Thread Martin Stolle
Package: xdm

After upgrading to this xdm version in unstable, users can no longer log
on. It seems like xdm tries to execute some scripts, as configured in
the default xdm-config, that don't exist. The missing scripts are
Xsetup_0, GiveConsole and TakeConsole.

Bug#361995: Problem confirmed - fixed upstream

2006-04-12 Thread Øystein Gisnås
tags 361995 confirmed fixed-upstream etch sid
stop

This problem has been reported upstream at [1], [2] and [3]. It does not
seem to exist in sarge, neither in 2.6.0. Since 2.6.1 is right around
the corner, effort will not be put into making a fix for 2.4.x.

To prevent data loss, deletion of contact lists is not recommended.
Also, it is generally safer to add new contacts to your main contact
list.

It is possible to manually remove contact lists, especially if you don't
care for their contents. The aliased contact lists use the common
database file ~/.evolution/addressbook/local/addressbook.db, whereas the
Personal addressbook uses
~/.evolution/addressbook/local/system/addressbook.db. Inspect file sizes
and creation dates to make sure this statement is correct. The command
gconftool -a /apps/evolution/addressbook shows all the address book
sources. source-entries with relative_uri= are broken, and can be
manually removed using for example gconf-editor. Finally the
~/.evolution/addressbook/local/addressbook.db and
~/.evolution/addressbook/local/addressbook.db.summary can be deleted
(moved somewhere else).

Remember that this manual can lead to further data loss. Always back up
your data and use extreme care when editing. Useful ways to back up your
data is to run evolution --force-shutdown, recursively copy
~/.evolution and dump gconf with gconftool -R /apps/evolution
evolution-gconf-backup.

The problems described above may also occur with calendars.

Bug#362001: [security] Insecure semaphore permissions

A DoS does not normally qualify as a severity: grave security bug.

Why the sudden change in policy?

So far, only user-initiated denial-of-service conditions (e.g. editor
crashes when opening certain files) were not considered grave bugs.

Hrm, it wasn't my understanding that this is a change in policy. According
to http://www.debian.org/Bugs/Developer#severities, the severities for
security bugs are:

critical: introduces a security hole on systems where you install the
  package

grave: introduces a security hole allowing access to the accounts of users
  who use the package

... important: most other stuff

and I understood that these severities followed from the Security Team's
policies regarding stable updates, which I was trying to honor with my
adjusting of this bug. If DoS bugs are being treated as grounds for issuing
DSAs, I'm fine with re-raising the severity on bugs like that; I just don't
want security bugs marked as grave if they don't qualify for security
updates in stable.

You can argue, depending on the type of service, that a remote DoS makes a
package unusable. That doesn't seem to apply to a database server that is
unlikely to be on the public Internet, though.

Only svgalib is setuid root, but a system running svgalib apps in the year
2006 is lost security-wise anyway. We should rather get rid of it completely

I think it is the opposite. -sdl is not installed setuid root, whereas
-x11 ask the user if he want to install setuid to use DGA extension.

I might have mixed that up.

The Debian security FAQ says that non-free is not supported, and I
understand why. But it also says that if it is fixable, an update can be
made. There were (a few) non-free security updates in the past.

I see that Bruno is alive :) If he reviews my patch for Sarge and if the
security buildds have CPU time available, is it possible to release an
update? I can write a part of the DSA if you want.

We're all quite busy with updates for free packages. I'd recommend
instead to include the update in the r2 Sarge stable update scheduled
for next week. You can contact the stable release managers through

Bug#361952: Please examine Bug#361952

2006-04-12 Thread Meike Reichle
Hi

Frank Küster said/sagte on/am 12.04.2006 07:55:
I guess this must be a partially upgraded system, tex-common is
installed, but not yet configured properly, and tetex-bin (and probably
-base) is still at the old version. tetex-bin_2.0.2-31 means that he is
using testing, but testing has 3.0-* for ages.

This (the partially upgraded system) might be the source of the problem.
I just went through a full upgrade + dist-upgrade that also got me the
new tetex-bin (3.0-15). So, I am sorry, I cannot do any more tests on
the old version.

Anyway, could it be (just guessing here) that this problem was caused by
a missing version dependency? As I see it tex4ht-common only requires
tetex-bin not a particular minimum version. So this might also be a
problem on other systems with an old version of tetex-bin.

Regards,
Meike

Bug#358648: FTBFS: 'alloc2' undeclared

2006-04-12 Thread Igor Belyi
OK, I've looked at it and I'm sorry to say I don't think this is the
right patch.

It seems to me that the patch disables gpgme.i's const char * typemap
definition by using
SWIG's bug of not reporting invalid syntax but silently ignoring it to
work around another SWIG
bug of the typemap causing alloc2 and buf2 not to be declared while
statements freeing them to be

present.

I'm still trying to find the right workaround for this. For now it seems
SWIG 1.3.28 is not good

version to use for pyme build.

Thanks for finding this out! :-)

The problem is solved. I only changed in xorg.conf

I think it's strange that changing that option solved the problem.
In Xorg 6.8 6.9, i didn't had problems with that.

FWIW, I'm not convinced this bug warrants grave severity anyway; unless the

this is really a big issue given that the radius clients shouldn't normally
be under the control of an attacker?

Nowadays, RADIUS is performed across administrative boundaries. 8-/

Package: python-mysqldb
Version: 1.2.1c3-6
Severity: grave

The python-mysqldb package is uninstallable in unstable because
python-mysqldb was binNMUed for the mysqlclient ABI change, and
python-mysqldb, an arch: all package, has a dependency on
python2.3-mysqldb (= 1.2.1c3-6) which no longer exists.

Arch: all - Arch: any strict versioned dependencies are fundamentally
incompatible with binNMUs. Please either make a single arch: any
python-mysqldb package that Provides: python2.3-mysqldb, or relax the
dependency so it can be satisfied by +b1 ... +bN versions of the package.

Either way, python-mysqldb currently needs a sourceful upload for the
libmysqlclient transition.

Bug#361781: marked as done (plplot-doc: uninstallable due to tight versioned dependency on liblplot9)

---BeginMessage---
Package: plplot-doc

2006-04-12 Thread Igor Belyi

Arnaud Fontaine wrote:

Well.. I do plan 0.7.1 release any minute now for the last half an
year. :-(

I want to figure out why do I still have problems with MinGW32 built
PyMe on Windows.
The problems boils down to gpgme problems with talking to gnupg.exe and
obstacted by
my inability to find the right time to really look at them. I guess I
would try newly
released GnuPG 1.4.4 to see if it is fixed there... But as for when -
that's the hard

question.

In short, I'd suggest to add this patch in a debian specific release to
avoid its eviction from
the testing or to speed up the inclusion into one. :-) The new 0.7.1
release will have just
the Windows build and 2 (including this one) bug fixes which is not too
much value-add

for Debian.

Cheers,
Igor

Bug#361024: 361024: and lack of feedback

2006-04-12 Thread Lennart Sorensen
On Tue, Apr 11, 2006 at 07:21:49PM -0700, Gordon Haverland wrote:
Occasionally I get an email from someone who is reporting back to
many people, but in general I have gotten NO FEEDBACK on this bug
report! It apparently wasn't reproducible to the person fielding
the bug report, but it is reproducible here. I asked, what can I
do to send you info to fix this? I get NOTHING! Someone else
reports on setting LD_DEBUG=all and running things I try this,
and get a HUGE output file. So, I send in a minimal report on
this, and hear NOTHING! A series of patched debs at
http://people.debian.org/~doko/tmp/ is suggested. I download and
install those. I get an error about cpp dependence, which I
report. No comment on this cpp dependence! And, if nothing
else, my system is even less usable than before. Apt-proxy won't
run (TLS errors), and so I try to bring things back to only using
apt to get the various packages files and compare things. I
 still get tons of errors.

AND STILL THERE IS NO RESPONSE TO ANYTHING I'VE SENT IN! Are you
looking for me to give up on Debian? Can't I get some feedback
as to what is happening? I am not expecting miracles. I would
like to help, if I can. But it is just some bloody black hole
 that I report to!

Is the only option to upgrade to a 2.6 kernel?

Looking at the bug report it looks like there is lots of activity.
Hardly what I would call no response to anything.

Certainly TLS requires a 2.6 kernel. If libstdc++6 requires TLS for
some reason, then it requries a 2.6 kernel. That is probably a bug if
that is the case.

Bug#358879: enigmail: GCC visibility bugs

2006-04-12 Thread Martin Orr
There are at least two GCC visibility bugs preventing enigmail from
building: 20297 and 26905 (both present in Debian gcc 4.0.3-1). Mozilla
configure from CVS trunk includes a check which uses -fvisibility=hidden
instead of pragmas if your compiler suffers from bug 20297, but this check
was too late for Thunderbird 1.5.
http://benjamin.smedbergs.us/blog/2006-03-28/gcc-and-visibility-one-step-forward-hit-a-brick-wall/
recommends that you work around these by setting ac_cv_visibility_pragma=no
when running configure.

(The NS_NewGenericModule2 error which comes up first is not explained by
either of these bugs, and it looks to me like the Mozilla headers have the
visibility of that set wrongly. But even after correcting that, you run
into the above GCC bugs so you may as well just disable the visibility pragma.)

packages. I have blamed udev because following the messages on the
screen i have found a script under /scripts that is responsible to mount
the root filesystem and since this fails with apparently no motivation
(if i mount the root partition manually without doing anything else, it
works) i suspected udev.

Please, can you explain a bit why you think that the problem stay in
initramfs-tools?

For information, my system is unbootable yet. During the last update,
the installation of the new kernel hasn't changed anything.
What really surprise me is that no one apart me has reported a similar
problem. My configuration is rather standard, with no particular
tweaking in the udev-initramfs area. The only thing related to the boot
phase that i have customized, is probably /etc/modules:

speedstep-centrino
#acpi-cpufreq
cpufreq-userspace
cpufreq-conservative
cpufreq-powersave
cpufreq-ondemand
#ide-cd
#ide-detect
#ide-disk
#psmouse
#sonypi

I'm waiting for an update of some package that resolve the problem,
since i have no idea where to put my hands. Until now i exec these
command in the BusyBox shell on every boot:

mount -t ext3 /dev/hda2 /root
exit

And the system boot up (apparently) normally.

Regards.

Cesare.

Bug#361741: Fail to mount root filesystem

2006-04-12 Thread Marco d'Itri
On Apr 12, Cesare Leonardi [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

Sorry, i don't know udev in details, but i don't understand why you have
 reassigned this bug to initramfs-tools.
Because it's initramfs-tools which tends to break people's systems, the
initramfs-related bits of udev have not changed in a while too.
