Bug#362282: alsa-base: No sound with Intel 82801G ICH7 (HDA)

2006-04-13 Thread Antoine Cailliau
Package: alsa-base
Version: 1.0.10-3
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

Since kernel 2.6.16, i heard no sound. It seems to be a bug of alsa-base.
But all modules load correctly. I just heard no sound (and my hp are connected
;))
If I boot under kernel 2.6.14 the sound work.

Bug#324890: nscd does not respond

2006-04-13 Thread Matej Vela
Scott Barker [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes:

The latest version of ncsd opens a socket in /var/run/.nscd_socket, however
it appears the glibc libraries are looking for it in /var/run/nscd/socket.
After making a symlink from /var/run/nscd/socket to /var/run/.nscd_socket,
an strace on 'ls -l' shows nscd being used.

nscd 2.3.6-6 opens /var/run/nscd/socket, as does libc6 2.3.6-6. Which
version are you using?

I also note that an strace on 'getent passwd' doesn't seem to use
nscd, while 'getent passwd user' does.

AFAIK, that's how it works -- nscd only handles individual requests
where there is a benefit from caching.

I tried this on two boxes with Xorg 7.0: both expose the same behaviour:
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ xterm
X Error of failed request: BadRequest (invalid request code or no such
operation)
Major opcode of failed request: 152 (XFIXES)
Minor opcode of failed request: 23 (XFixesSetCursorName)

Same for rxvt:

operation)
Major opcode of failed request: 152 (XFIXES)
Minor opcode of failed request: 23 (XFixesSetCursorName)
Serial number of failed request: 86
Current serial number in output stream: 87

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ amule
The program 'amule' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadRequest (invalid request code or no such operation)'.
  (Details: serial 85 error_code 1 request_code 152 minor_code 23)
  (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line
option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)

So, this rather seems to be an error in the Xserver. This did NOT happen
with an older Xorg 7.0 package I recently installed from
experimental

Package: xcursor-themes
Version: 1.0.1-2
Severity: normal

Hi,

In 6.9 I used cursors from gtk2-engines-industrial (automagically).
After switching to Xorg 7.0 from experimental this stopped working and
I selected the cursor theme with one of [1]

ln -s /usr/share/icons/whiteglass /usr/share/icons/default
ln -s /usr/share/icons/whiteglass ~/.icons/default

This worked with Xorg 7.0 from experimental but many programs break
with Xorg 7.0 from unstable, xterm gives informative message:

$ xterm
X Error of failed request: BadRequest (invalid request code or no such
operation)
Major opcode of failed request: 152 (XFIXES)
Minor opcode of failed request: 23 (XFixesSetCursorName)
Serial number of failed request: 27
Current serial number in output stream: 28

Emacs and Gtk2 programs most notably GDM fail to start with a more
cryptic messages.

The problem disappears after removing the `default' link, but the
curious thing is that it have worked before Xorg from experimental.

I just used aptitude to upgrade my debian/unstable box (the previous
full update was on 2006-03-19), most notably this upgraded the X system
to 7.0.10. And since then, many X programs are either crashing (mostly
before even displaying anything), or reporting the same error code while
functionning otherwise unaffected.

for instance : gqview, firefox, thunderbird, emacs... all crash on
launch and report :
(emacs :)
X protocol error: BadRequest (invalid request code or no such operation)
on protocol request 151

(firefox/thunderbird :)
The error was 'BadRequest (invalid request code or no such operation)'.
 (Details: serial 418 error_code 1 request_code 151 minor_code 23)

gimp starts OK, but crashes when opening any kind of menu.

While knode (and all kde/qt programs I tried so far) run without
problem, though reporting the same errors a few times on startup :
X Error: BadRequest (invalid request code or no such operation) 1
 Major opcode: 151
 Minor opcode: 23

Hi,

after upgrading xserver-xorg to version 7.0.10 yesterday the
/usr/X11R6/bin/mkfontdir doesn't exist anymore. I think this is the reason
why the following error message appears:

Creating a link /usr/X11R6/bin/mkfontdir - /usr/bin/mkfontdir fixes the
problem.

Could you please provide a patch for all users, not only those

That patch should work for all users. It's just not as userful for them.

initramfs-tools

(Which by default *should* update the initramfs because the new udev may
have new bug fixes and having the same version in both places is a good

Bug#362310: Segmentation fault

2006-04-13 Thread Stephen Gran
This one time, at band camp, McKenna, John P. (LIT) said:
Sarg is segfaulting since I upgraded to this version, I've included part
 of an strace:

[...]
 munmap(0x4001b000, 4096)= 0
[...]
 munmap(0x4001b000, 4096)= 0
 --- SIGSEGV (Segmentation fault) @ 0 (0) ---
 +++ killed by SIGSEGV +++

Looks suspiciously like a double free, at first guess. I see nothing in
the changes between 2.1-2 and 2.1-4 that should have introduced that,
however. A quick grep show only half a dozen or so calls to free(),
though, so hopefully it's not too hard to trtack down.

Well, linux-kernel-di-powerpc is no more used, and should thus not be built.

The only reason to keep it is for the nubus and possibly apus kernels, but
none of them are currently built.

Maybe we should ask for the removal of linux-kernel-di-powerpc for etch/sid ?

2.4.27 is dead, let's get rid of it. We can always reintroduce it later for

Maybe you can track the lines read by these system calls:

read(4, \n04/09/2006 12:00:52 10.1.0..., 4096) = 4096
read(4, pdate_2.6.18_english_livetri.zip..., 4096) = 1452

and check if sarg still segfaults.

If this is not the case any publicly accessible source is ok, or i
can set up a saft server for you.

When do you think this version of alsa will be in unstable (roughly) ?

the special swedish characters do not work -- I can't input them.

I get this error message from GNOME:

Error activating XKB configuration.
It can happen under various circumstances:
- a bug in libxklavier library
- a bug in X server (xkbcomp, xmodmap utilities)
- X server with incompatible libxkbfile implementation

X server version data:

7000

If you report this situation as a bug, please include:
- The result of xprop -root | grep XKB
- The result of gconftool-2 -R /desktop/gnome/peripherals/keyboard/kbd

The __EXPORT keyword is not present in commoncpp2 from fedora package.

despite none of these lines being present in the list of modules to
 load in /etc/X11/xorg.conf

These modules are required and thus loaded automatically by the X
server.

Most likely, you have a superfluous ModulePath line
in /etc/X11/xorg.conf. If not, please post that file as well
as /var/log/Xorg.0.log.

Hi,
nvidia-installer is upstream's installer, not appropriate to use with
Debian. If you used it on one machine, please consider it tainted and
use great care before opening another bug report based on that machine's
behavior.

If there is really a bug causing this in Debian packages, it should
almost certainly be assigned to nvidia-glx, rather than
nvidia-kernel-common which is an obsolete package.

This is a non-Sarge version. I don't see obvious problems with my

I'll consider this bug report as invalid, I'm sorry. (Apart from the
fact that I could fix packages in stable only after a really good
justification.)

I found that switching on a tab like Messages, that is,
leaving the transfers tab on the background reduces dramatically
the CPU usage by xorg. I think it's widgets fault, but I don't know
how to investicate.

Bug#343113: slapd: Can someone provide a workaround?

2006-04-13 Thread Shawn Willden
Package: slapd
Version: 2.2.26-5

I was able to get to where I could start to use the
database by setting a rootdn and rootpw in slapd.conf,
but I'd like to correctly set the admin password in the
database. How do I do that?

Can someone post a detailed, step-by-step workaround to
this issue, until an actual fix is developed?

Thanks,

Trying to builf madwifi version 0.svn20060207-4 on mipsel, I have seen
it now fails to build from source:

The problem was already there in the previous version, but the error was
ignored. Therefore I suggest to make the following change:

diff -u madwifi-0.svn20060207/debian/rules madwifi-0.svn20060207/debian/rules

My intention was to make the upstream tools/Makefile _never_ call
Makefile.inc. I will look into this some more this weekend.

Thanks for the report.

Kel.

Bug#361024: 361024: and lack of feedback

2006-04-13 Thread Lennart Sorensen
On Wed, Apr 12, 2006 at 02:56:37PM -0700, Gordon Haverland wrote:
I must get better at phrasing things then. There is a lot of
feedback in the bug report. However, within the bug report there
are still many questions which are never answered or commented
upon. As far as feedback goes, a couple of people responding to
issues in the bug report, did cc me a copy of the email they
submitted. Most people responding to issues in the bug report,
did not cc me anything. So, I might recieve an email which
seemed to be related to what I had asked, didn't answer my
questions. Thinking that my part of the questions had been
solved and this being something more involved, I would look at
the bug report to find that usually no, what I had asked still
hadn't been answered, but someone elses related problem with this
same bug had been answered or commented upon.

For instance, someone had suggested running whatever troublesome
program with LD_DEBUG=all in the environment. Fine, I did that
with an apt-get upgrade. This produced a 36 MB file. I
mentioned how big the file was, and where the error message was
in that file. Nobody said anything about this file after that.
I still have this file. I gather it is of no use, and that I can
 delete it.

I am not necessarily in a hurry to upgrade to a 2.6 kernel. If
there are things I can do here, to help get rid of this bug, I am
probably willing to try. No, I have no experience at debugging
things like libc. I do have more than 25 years experience at
programming, mostly number crunching. But unless someone
suggests an action plan, I am not going to try and find/solve
 this thing on my own.

Well it appears as if libstdc++6 somehow is compiled to require TLS, at
least in the version on your system. That would make it 2.6 kernel
compatible only. I just tried some c++ programs on my arm system, which
is my only 2.4 kernel system at this time, and I had no problems there.
It is running with this version of libstdc++6:
ii  libstdc++6  4.1.0-1  The GNU Standard C++ Library v3

Of course arm isn't i386 so that doesn't really mean that much.

Which version do you have on your system?

Do you have any environment set related to LD at all?

Len Sorensen

Bug#357439: amaya: same problem here

2006-04-13 Thread Wesley J. Landaker
Package: amaya
Version: 9.4-3
Followup-For: Bug #357439

Same basic problem here. It starts to display but then instantly crashes, 100%
of the time. The message I get is very similar, but slightly different.

The program 'amaya' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadMatch (invalid parameter attributes)'.
  (Details: serial 7296 error_code 8 request_code 143 minor_code 5)
  (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line
option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)

As you can see, this is on amd64.

Hello Joop,

usr/lib/perl5/auto/Hamlib/Hamlib.so include a rpath to a user-writable
directory.

%chrpath usr/lib/perl5/auto/Hamlib/Hamlib.so
usr/lib/perl5/auto/Hamlib/Hamlib.so:
RPATH=/home/pg4i/Desktop/Projects/Debian/hamlib-1.2.4/bindings/../src/.libs

This allows a user having a homedir of /home/pg4i/ to get access to accounts
of other people using hamlib3-perl on the box.

Generally spurious rpath should be avoided.

Cheers,

Please do not take any action before reading
http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel-announce/2005/11/msg00010.html

This bug report is filed against the source package which builds
a library depending on libstdc++6 and defining or referencing
*mt_alloc* symbols. The package has to be rebuilt with either
g++-4.0_4.0.2-4 or g++-3.4_3.4.4-10 (or newer). Please rename the
library package to a name with a c2a suffix, and adjust the build
dependencies if dependencies on another renamed library do exist.

Do *not* yet upload the package, but wait for a followup mail to this
bug report.

If this bug report is for some reason invalid, please close it with
a short reasoning.

python2.1-tk has an unmet dependency on tix8.1 (= 8.1.4). I think
python2.1-tk should depend on tix instead.
