Bug#364832: don't use dpkg-ststoverride like that and nobody gets hurt
dpkg-statoverride was created first and foremost for the admin to use. In your maintainer script you'd better use the idiom if ! dpkg-statoverride --list /usr/bin/fusermount /dev/null; then # admin changed nothing chown and chmod to your heart's content fi # else the admin changed something (say, the group able to use fusermount) and you should not interfere This way you'll avoid not only this bug but also heavy objects flying in your general direction from some unhappy admin. If you go this route, I'd also suggest removing on upgrade the override previous versions of fuse-utils created (of course iff it is exactly like what the package did and not modified by the local administrator). -- Michał Politowski Talking has been known to lead to communication if practiced carelessly. signature.asc Description: Digital signature

Bug#361384: [Pkg-dspam-misc] Bug#361384: Missing Template?
Chris Dos wrote: As you know, the same problem is occuring in the libdspam7-drv-mysql package. Looking at the libdspam7-drv-mysql.postinst script, at the line: dbc_generate_include=template:/etc/dspam/dspam.d/mysql.conf Looking at /etc/dspam/dspam.d show no files listed there. Could the problem be as simple as the templates are missing from /etc/dspam/dspam.d? Chris Hi, The templates for dspam are in /usr/share/doc/libdspam7-drv-mysql and same goes for the postgresql backend. This is more a problem in dbconfig-common, I tried to fix bug #359944 the problem there is that it won't install on an unattended installation. Well my fix to that problem was to set the default of question: libdspam7-drv-mysql/dbconfig-install to false. After that it didn't fail on install anymore. Well that worked out in my environment and worked pretty well until I got the bug reports and looked over it again. Solution: revert change and reassign bug #359944 to dbconfig-common to ask them to set the default to false for the question dbconfig-install Regards, Matthijs Mohlmann -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#350407: lessdisks-terminal: modifies /etc/kernel-img.conf in postinst
This one time, at band camp, Jonas Smedegaard said: On Tue, 25 Apr 2006 09:47:55 +0100 Stephen Gran wrote: OK, I think this is a fairly straight forward test - does lessdisks-terminal in any way maintain either kernel-img.conf or inittab (ship a manpage, related infrastructure, file creation/deletion handling)? If not, then your package doesn't own the file, and can't modify it except via a helper script. I'm not trying to be brusque, I just want to cut to the chase here. I do agree that lessdisks-terminal is _not_ a candidate as owner of any of those files, so should be fixed to not violate policy. Good. What I did above was elaborate on wether those other packages mentioned also violates policy. It appears that there is a corner case, that, when viewed from a certain angle, might violate policy. The situation is unclear to me, but if you think it's more clear, feel free to file bugs or do whatever you like. Or put differently: The optimal for lessdisks-client was to work correctly when installed - moving the needed configuration changes into an installation script run by the local user is a bad hack: Being able to reverse the proces simply by removing the package again would be best. So I want to understand exactly which package then owns the files that lessdisks-client is not allowed to mess with on its own - in order to either conflict with those packages or (preferrable, but also slower to implement) help implement an interface for editing the files. If e.g. /etc/kernel-img.conf is owned by kernel-package then great - I don't even need to understand the interface mentioned by Manoj, but can simply conflict with that package instead. That's policy compliant, but hey - what about the kernels then? It is only a corner case that they write to that file, but still...? Didn't manoj tell you explicitly how to interface with the scripts? I thought he pointed you to using the hooks directories. This means you don't need to conflict with anything. No, You misunderstand me. An RC bug means, by definition, that we would rather remove the package from the next stable release rather than ship it with this problem. Nope - it means that _either_ we'd rather be without the package for the next release, _or_ we'd rather delay the release to get the problem fixed. I doubt that that's true for the kernel. I honestly do believe that we want to resolve such problem before next release. And even if it turns out to be too tricky to solve or judged too much a corner case, there's also the option of tagging the bug as etch-ignore. As I said, I am not sure it is a bug for the kernels. It is certainly interesting, but they are all using a common infrastructure handed to them by a package that writes their postinst's, so it could be read several ways. Only one way makes it an RC bug, and the time wasted arguing (on this bug alone, not to mention any further ones that might get opened) seems to me to be wasting more time than just fixing _this_ bug and moving on. There are other channels for fixing bugs than clogging up the release team's queue with things they are just going to override if they have to get a kernel image into etch. You tell me that some bugs are inapropriate for the BTS? I know about the non-disclosure of some security fixes, but those aside I disagree. I am saying that some things that are unclear but may not be bugs may be better handled in an open discussion, rather than throught the BTS. If I undersatnd correctly, you want to move the config file editing out of postinst into something the admin invokes? That would be perfect, thank you. No, not perfect, but enough to change this bugreport into a low-priority one about implementing a better approach when resolved how to actually do that (which may involve filing bugreports against those packages similarly violating policy). So, manoj has told you can use the hooks directories from your maintainer scripts. That solves any problems with kernel-img.conf, as far as I can see. As for inittab, well, you're just going to have to stop writing to it, unless you want to conflict with init and take responsibility for the file ;) I think that covers everything. Does the mean that the maxdb-doc package will have to be pulled from the repository? Yes, unless you get a license exemption from the copyright holder allowing Debian and its mirrors to distribute the HTML as is. They will probably agree. In that case, it goes into non-free. Bug#354436: [EMAIL PROTECTED]: Bug#360003: xine-lib: implicit pointer conversion]
[Dies ist die Kopie einer Nachricht, die in die Gruppe gmane.comp.video.xine.devel gepostet wurde.] Darren Salt wrote: FWIW, I've just had a look at Debian bug 354436. The relevant log fragment (taken from, at random, the most recent ia64 buildd log for xine-lib [1]) follows: h263.c: In function 'mpeg4_decode_partition_a': h263.c:69: sorry, unimplemented: inlining failed in call to 'mpeg4_decode_dc': function body not available h263.c:3445: sorry, unimplemented: called from here (File is src/libffmpeg/libavcodec/h263.c.) There are two possible answers: move the bodies of the inlined functions to before the first uses, or don't inline them at all. The following inlined functions are used too early: ff_mpeg4_pred_dc mpeg4_decode_block mpeg4_decode_dc mpeg4_encode_block The last of these isn't relevant to us but still needs to be fixed upstream. I tried to build xine-lib cvs on a mips64 box, and played a bit with reordering the functions. The thing is that those functions above are only the tip of the iceberg, there are lots of other unresolvable inlines as well. I googled a bit more around this problem, and found this gcc bug report: http://gcc.gnu.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=14677 It is marked rejected, because the attribute 'always_inline' is used. What I'm going to try now is to identify which 'always_inline' attributes need to be removed to make xine buildable again.. thoughts? Bug#363061: Unclear License of AMSLaTeX
Dear AMSLaTeX team, I'm a little confused with regard to the license of amslatex. On CTAN and in the TeX Catalogue, the license information says that it is licensed under the LPPL (LaTeX Project Public License). However, neither on amslatex' homepage, http://www.ams.org/tex/amslatex.html, nor in the files on CTAN is a hint that this is actually true. On the contrary, one of the files in the amsrefs subdirectory, pcatcode.dtx, says that it's licensed under the Artistic license (which is pretty unspecific, there are many versions around), and most other files contain a statement like this: %%% copyright = Copyright 1995 American Mathematical Society, %%%all rights reserved. Copying of this file is %%%authorized only if either: %%%(1) you make absolutely no changes to your copy, %%%including name; OR %%%(2) if you do make changes, you first rename it %%%to some other name., This is clearly not what the LPPL grants and requires, not even older versions: - it does not permit to distribute changed versions, even when renamed, - the current LPPL allows to change the internal identification as an alternative to renaming the file, and - this text doesn't even allow to copy amsclass.dtx to amsclass.dtx.bak I am sure this is not what was originally intended. Therefore I'd like to kindly request that you clarify the license situation, communicate this to distributors, and include the information in the next release. In my opinion, the LPPL is indeed a good choice for a LaTeX extension, and I'd be glad to see amslatex unambiguously LPPL'ed. Anyway, many thanks for providing and maintaining this great LaTeX extension! Kind regards, Frank -- Frank Küster Single Molecule Spectroscopy, Protein Folding @ Inst. f. Biochemie, Univ. Bug#346354: AW: Bug#346354: Is distribution of the maxdb-doc package a GPL violation?

Does the mean that the maxdb-doc package will have to be pulled from the repository? Yes, unless you get a license exemption from the copyright holder allowing Debian and its mirrors to distribute the HTML as is. They will probably agree. In that case, it goes into non-free. It's not obvious to me that either the license exemption or the non-free categorization are necessary here. GPL requires the preferred form for modification, which for most people working on derivative works would probably *not* be the Word docs? -- Steve Langasek Give me a lever long enough and a Free OS Debian Developer to set it on, and I can move the world. Regards, Jan Hi Jan, thanks for your support and patience all this time. I'd like to ask you to hold one more jot of patience. The upgrade to Xorg 7.0 has brought complications left, right and centre, not just to Xprint. Fonts are still being brought into line, libxfont needs to be brought up to the forthcoming 7.1 version. I left a note in the changelog and at http://wiki.debian.org/Xprint that Xprint has degraded with Xorg7.0, but I believe it will bounce back to its previous glory once Debian gets 7.1 into its system (it's due for release upstream next month). Of course you of all people know that it's former state certainly had issues. The reason I'm optimistic about 7.1 is that I've grabbed it from CVS, and the mozilla printing output looks alright. It certainly didn't have the problems we now see with 7.0, and it even seemed to repair the problem printing the Debian home page. The FreeType method you mentioned at 9.3.2 looks promising, and I understand mozilla is planning to switch to Cairo for printing in firefox 2. All the same if you don't mind I'd like to drop you a line once I think Xprint from Xorg7.1 is running OK. We should at least manage to get it working as well as it did in X11R6. I've asked X.org for CVS write permission so I can help bring it up to full correct functionality, but as you said it's not a high priority for them, so I'm still waiting to hear back from them. Thanks again for all your patience. I guess I'm just trying to say the last straw was really no straw, so wait just a little longer. The real last straw is still coming :) Drew -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Bug#346354: AW: Bug#346354: Is distribution of the maxdb-doc package a GPL violation?
On Thu, Apr 27, 2006 at 03:46:18PM -0700, Walter Landry wrote: Steve Langasek [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: On Thu, Apr 27, 2006 at 05:35:51AM -0700, Walter Landry wrote: [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I have verfified that the actual sources for the generated HTML are Microsoft Word documents and that those will not be distributed. The people actually doing modifications use the Word format, not the HTML format. It seems clear to me that the Word format is preferred. I prefer html over Word. If I modify the document, I'm going to modify the html, not the Word document. (Not just because I don't have the Word doc, but because I think Word docs are a lousy source format.) To my understanding, the only thing required to show that a certain file format is the preferred form is to use it as the basis for modifications. This seems like a pretty easy standard for the package maintainer to meet, if indeed the html format is the preferred form. -- Steve Langasek Give me a lever long enough and a Free OS Debian Developer to set it on, and I can move the world. Your message dated Thu, 27 Apr 2006 21:47:08 -0700 with message-id [EMAIL PROTECTED] and subject line Bug#362894: fixed in xorg 1:7.0.15 has caused the attached Bug report to be marked as done. This means that you claim that the problem has been dealt with. If this is not the case it is now your responsibility to reopen the Bug report if necessary, and/or fix the problem forthwith. (NB: If you are a system administrator and have no idea what I am talking about this indicates a serious mail system misconfiguration somewhere. Please contact me immediately.) Debian bug tracking system administrator (administrator, Debian Bugs database) ---BeginMessage--- Package: x11-common Version: 1:7.0.12 Severity: grave Justification: renders package unusable Hi X maintainers! It seems that the font organization is completely crazy now: - X cannot find the fixed font anymore: The fixed enty in fonts.alias in /usr/share/fonts/X11/misc is not included in the fonts.dir file - there are still two different hierachies: Up to now the xorg.conf files contain as fontpath /usr/lib/X11/fonts ... But /usr/lib/X11/fonts - /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts but the later is DIFFERENT from /usr/share/fonts/X11/... so in effect the fonts in /usr/share/fonts/X11 are not included in the font path at all. - there are no man pages how to update the font system: mkfontdir which has been used till now is nothing else the mkfontscale script. All this is grave because one cannot start the X server, and even playing around with /usr/share/fonts/X11/misc and mkfontdir didn't fix the situation (the script could give a warning message that now you should use update-what-the-hell). After adding the fonts.scale by hand and adding it to the fonts.dir still now work, because of the above fonts path hierachy mismatch. What a grat disaster, to be honest! Forthermore, please include documentation, write up some transition document, it is NOT up to the user to find out everything by themselves. -- System Information: Debian Release: testing/unstable APT prefers unstable APT policy: (500, 'unstable'), (10, 'experimental') Architecture: i386 (i686) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Kernel: Linux 2.6.17-rc1-mm2 Locale: [EMAIL PROTECTED], [EMAIL PROTECTED] (charmap=ISO-8859-15) Versions of packages x11-common depends on: ii debconf [debconf-2.0] 1.4.72 Debian configuration management sy ii debianutils 2.15.5 Miscellaneous utilities specific t ii laptop-detect 0.12.1 attempt to detect a laptop ii lsb-base 3.1-3 Linux Standard Base 3.1 init scrip x11-common recommends no packages. -- debconf information: x11-common/xwrapper/allowed_users: Anybody x11-common/experimental_packages: x11-common/xwrapper/actual_allowed_users: anybody x11-common/xwrapper/nice_value/error: x11-common/xwrapper/nice_value: -10 ---End Message--- ---BeginMessage--- Source: xorg Source-Version: 1:7.0.15 We believe that the bug you reported is fixed in the latest version of xorg, which is due to be installed in the Debian FTP archive: libglu1-xorg-dev_7.0.15_all.deb to pool/main/x/xorg/libglu1-xorg-dev_7.0.15_all.deb libglu1-xorg_7.0.15_all.deb to pool/main/x/xorg/libglu1-xorg_7.0.15_all.deb x-window-system-core_7.0.15_all.deb to pool/main/x/xorg/x-window-system-core_7.0.15_all.deb x-window-system_7.0.15_all.deb to pool/main/x/xorg/x-window-system_7.0.15_all.deb x11-common_7.0.15_i386.deb to pool/main/x/xorg/x11-common_7.0.15_i386.deb xlibmesa-dri_7.0.15_all.deb to pool/main/x/xorg/xlibmesa-dri_7.0.15_all.deb xlibmesa-gl-dev_7.0.15_all.deb to pool/main/x/xorg/xlibmesa-gl-dev_7.0.15_all.deb xlibmesa-gl_7.0.15_all.deb to pool/main/x/xorg/xlibmesa-gl_7.0.15_all.deb xlibs-data_7.0.15_all.deb to pool/main/x/xorg/xlibs-data_7.0.15_all.deb xlibs-static-dev_7.0.15_all.deb to pool/main/x/xorg/xlibs-static-dev_7.0.15_all.deb xorg-dev_7.0.15_all.deb to pool/main/x/xorg/xorg-dev_7.0.15_all.deb xorg_7.0.15.dsc to pool/main/x/xorg/xorg_7.0.15.dsc xorg_7.0.15.tar.gz to pool/main/x/xorg/xorg_7.0.15.tar.gz xorg_7.0.15_all.deb to pool/main/x/xorg/xorg_7.0.15_all.deb xserver-xfree86_7.0.15_all.deb to pool/main/x/xorg/xserver-xfree86_7.0.15_all.deb xserver-xorg-input-all_7.0.15_i386.deb to pool/main/x/xorg/xserver-xorg-input-all_7.0.15_i386.deb xserver-xorg-video-all_7.0.15_i386.deb to pool/main/x/xorg/xserver-xorg-video-all_7.0.15_i386.deb xserver-xorg_7.0.15_all.deb to pool/main/x/xorg/xserver-xorg_7.0.15_all.deb A summary of the changes between this version and the previous one is attached.
