Bug#358901: w3c-markup-validator: Any validation fails with Software error

2006-04-28 Thread Steve Langasek
Hi Frederic,

What are your plans for getting a new package uploaded to unstable that
fixes this bug? Is the 0.7.2 package at
http://www.mathgen.ch/debian/experimental/ suitable for upload sponsoring
as-is?

Thanks,

 No, not similar problems.

On hppa, the package FTBFS due to code errors.

On ia64 and powerpc, the used buildd are not capable of building
${arch}64 because the machine used is only ${arch}32, but the package
will build fine if a capable machine is used.

  See http://buildd.debian.org/build.php?arch=pkg=unionfs

From m68k, I didn't seen any buildlog so far, why isn't here any?

Now there is, sorry.

Ok, reading the log explains why it is not working on m68k. The buildd tries
to execute scripts/basic/fixdep from the linux-headers package. And as
somebody else noted before, this does not run on m68k, since it was
(cross-)built on i386, but only the kernel is cross-built, not the binaries.
So it is either the fault of the linux-2.6 package, which does not properly
cross-compile binaries in its packages, or my fault, since I do not want to
wait a week for the packages to compile natively.

Can we please get this fixed in the kernel-build process? It should be
useful for other arches that cross-compile the kernel, too.

Christian

Bug#365124: gnucash does not start at all: further info

2006-04-28 Thread Alberto Maurizi

I managed to start gnucash.

The problem seems to be the lock file.
When I tried to start it, gnucash warned me that it could not
obtain lock for the file I asked to open.
When I tell it to Open Anyway, it hung.

Then I tried again by creating a new (fake) file and the opening
the original one: it worked.

Augh!

Aargh, thanks. But--speaking as upstream and debian maintainer--
almost nothing changed between this version and the previous one

related to the newest X packages. I'll ask around.

Bug#365134: wrong paths to executables or executables in wrong places

2006-04-28 Thread Olivier Ponsini
Package: xdm
Version: 1:1.0.1-6
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

Hello,

The paths to, at least, the xdm and X executables are not set up
correctly.

Some init scripts or configuration files, including /etc/init.d/xdm or
/etc/X11/default-display-manager expect the xdm executable to be in
/usr/bin/X11/xdm while the package installs it in /usr/bin.

Moreover, the xdm executable (I think) looks for /usr/bin/X while X is
to be found, in debian testing, in /usr/X11R6/bin. The same problem
occurs for, at least, xrdb which is looked for in /usr/bin but to be
found in /usr/X11R6/bin.

I suppose this is due to the upgrade of Xorg in debian unstable reaching
testing.

Best regards,

  olivier ponsini

Bug#365151: libmail-mbox-messageparser-perl: message splitting breaks

Package: libmail-mbox-messageparser-perl

Severity: grave
Justification: causes non-serious data loss

Hello,

my program mail-expire uses this module to split mbox files into
individual messages. Sometimes, however, the end of file is reported too
early and data is _lost_ because of that. I did not try to investigate
the issue yet, test data is in:
http://people.debian.org/~blade/debian-user-german.Apr_2006.bz2
and the current version of the script is attached, with debugging output
enabled. If you look at that, it stops splitting the contents at [EMAIL
PROTECTED] and returns the rest as one big message.

Regards,
Eduard.

Bug#365162: libtcltk-ruby1.8: tcltklib fails during initialization

2006-04-28 Thread Christian Surlykke
Package: libtcltk-ruby1.8

Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

The following ruby script:

  #!/usr/bin/ruby1.8
  require 'tk'
  root = TkRoot.new { title Test }
  TkLabel.new(root) do
text 'Hello, World!'
pack { padx 15 ; pady 15; side 'left' }
  end
  Tk.mainloop

fails at line 2 (require 'tk') with the message:

  /usr/lib/ruby/1.8/tk.rb:1102:in `initialize': tcltklib: fail to Tk_Init().
this isn't a Tk applicationunknown color name Black (RuntimeError)
  from /usr/lib/ruby/1.8/tk.rb:1102
  from ./tst.rb:2

Same problem when doing 'require tk' from irb1.8

If I load the script into vi or vim, the message

'Warning: Color name black is not defined'

is written to stderr (Maybe because vi-ruby-mode is doing some interpretation?).

Bug#365168: [NONFREE-DOC] Package contains IETF RFC/I-D

2006-04-28 Thread Simon Josefsson
Package: sendpage-common
Severity: serious

Hi!

It seems your package contains non-free RFC:

usr/share/doc/sendpage-common/docs/rfc1861.txt.gz

The license on RFCs is not DFSG-free, see:

http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=199810
http://release.debian.org/removing-non-free-documentation

I believe the options are:

1) Remove the file from the package (which may include re-packaging
   the source code).

2) Move the rfc to a non-free package (which may also include
   re-packaging the source code).

If you disagree with this, because this bug is reported for several
packages at once, it seems better to discuss this on debian-legal, in
this thread:

http://thread.gmane.org/gmane.linux.debian.devel.legal/25993

Thanks,

Bug#365179: [NONFREE-DOC] Package contains IETF RFC/I-D

2006-04-28 Thread Simon Josefsson
Package: xemacs21-basesupport
Severity: serious

Hi!

It seems your package contains non-free RFC/I-Ds:

usr/share/xemacs21/xemacs-packages/etc/zenirc/RFC1459
editors/xemacs21-basesupport

The license on I-Ds is not DFSG-free, see:

http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=199810
http://release.debian.org/removing-non-free-documentation

I believe the options are:

1) Remove the file from the package (which may include re-packaging
   the source code).

2) Move the files to a non-free package (which may also include
   re-packaging the source code).

If you disagree with this, because this bug is reported for several
packages at once, it seems better to discuss this on debian-legal, in
this thread:

http://thread.gmane.org/gmane.linux.debian.devel.legal/25993

The severity is serious, because this violates the Debian policy
http://www.debian.org/doc/debian-policy/ch-archive.html#s-dfsg.

I'm sorry if this report is filed in error, I went over many packages
looking for suspicious filenames, and there may be false positives.

Thanks,
Simon

2) Move the files to a non-free package (which may also include
   re-packaging the source code).

If you disagree with this, because this bug is reported for several
packages at once, it seems better to discuss this on debian-legal, in
this thread:

http://thread.gmane.org/gmane.linux.debian.devel.legal/25993

The severity is serious, because this violates the Debian policy
http://www.debian.org/doc/debian-policy/ch-archive.html#s-dfsg.

I'm sorry if this report is filed in error, I went over many packages
looking for suspicious filenames, and there may be false positives.

Thanks,
Simon

Yep, you're right, but i think it would be better if python-all depends

Bug#363061: Unclear License of AMSLaTeX

2006-04-28 Thread AMS Technical Support

hi, frank, et al.

please be assured that our intent is simply to ensure
that, when one of our authors uses an ams-latex package,
s/he can be certain that it is the one that we support,
not a modified version. there is no intent to restrict
distribution of changed versions as long as the name
has been changed and any indication that ams is the
source of support has been removed. (this applies as
well to ams-tex and amsfonts, which are on ctan, and
to specific ams author packages, which are not.)

the wording of the copyright is drawn from knuth's
original on tex itself, long before latex or any similar
license existed. we have used this wording from our very
first release of ams-tex, and haven't changed it since then.
the latex team has accepted in good faith that our intent
coincides with theirs, but with the growing controversy
over the wording of licenses, it appears this acceptance
is not general.

i'm not really familiar with the file pcatcode.dtx.
amsrefs has always been in the purview of another person,
first michael downes, and now david jones. however, i
know that michael was a party to many latex license
discussions, and that is perhaps why he chose to cite
the artistic license rather than use the usual ams
statement. since he's no longer with us, we can't know
for sure, although i'm willing to ask frank mittelbach.

regarding the usual ams statement, i've started a
discussion here about possibly changing the statement
to the lppl, or whatever is appropriate that will still
ensure the authority of what is in distribution so
that we won't be blind-sided by author submissions
based on modified versions that we're not aware of,
and can't support. it's very important to us that
ams-latex has been adopted into standard latex; we
hope the entire community benefits -- we certainly do.

any change will have to be approved here by higher
management, and we are not likely to distribute a new
release without also taking into account the bug reports
that have surfaced since the last release, so getting
something done will take some time. but we will try.

our spam filter, although the copy to tex-live was
not. i'm totally confused, and have turned that
over to our systems gurus to decipher. do you have
any ideas why this might have happened?

Subject: Unclear License of AMSLaTeX

Dear AMSLaTeX team,

I'm a little confused with regard to the license of amslatex. On CTAN
and in the TeX Catalogue, the license information says that it is
licensed under the LPPL (LaTeX Project Public License). However,
neither on amslatex' homepage, http://www.ams.org/tex/amslatex.html, nor
in the files on CTAN is a hint that this is actually true.

On the contrary, one of the files in the amsrefs subdirectory,
pcatcode.dtx, says that it's licensed under the Artistic license (which
is pretty unspecific, there are many versions around), and most other
files contain a statement like this:

%%% copyright = Copyright 1995 American Mathematical Society,
%%%all rights reserved. Copying of this file is
%%%authorized only if either:
%%%(1) you make absolutely no changes to your copy,
%%%including name; OR
%%%(2) if you do make changes, you first rename it
%%%to some other name.,

This is clearly not what the LPPL grants and requires, not even older
versions:

- it does not permit to distribute changed versions, even when renamed,

- the current LPPL allows to change the internal identification as an
alternative to renaming the file, and

- this text doesn't even allow to copy amsclass.dtx to amsclass.dtx.bak

I am sure this is not what was originally intended. Therefore I'd like
to kindly request that you clarify the license situation, communicate
this to distributors, and include the information in the next release.
In my opinion, the LPPL is indeed a good choice for a LaTeX extension,
and I'd be glad to see amslatex unambiguously LPPL'ed.

Anyway, many thanks for providing and maintaining this great LaTeX
extension!

Kind regards, Frank

Package: dokuwiki
Severity: serious
Justification: Policy 10.7.3

Dokuwiki's postinst unconditionally symlinks apache.conf to
$srv/conf.d or places an include directive into $srv/httpd.conf.

If a local administrator decides to remove that symlink, it is
reinstated at the next time of package update, thus not preserving
this local change.

Additionally, modifying $srv/http.conf might modify another package's
conffile, which is verboten as well.

Greetings
Marc

Bug#365229: libgnujaxp-java - produces more log output than build output

2006-04-28 Thread Bastian Blank
Package: libgnujaxp-java
Version: 1.3-5
Severity: serious

The build of libgnujaxp-java produces more than 200k lines of output
with about 21MiB.

At the same time it produces about 12MiB of build result.

Build needed 00:01:56, 12356k disk space

This is not longer acceptable as it wastes enormous ammounts of
ressources with useless informations.

I just did this:

# dpkg -P dokuwiki
(Reading database ... 135732 files and directories currently installed.)
Removing dokuwiki ...
Reloading apache configuration.
invoke-rc.d: unknown initscript, /etc/init.d/apache-ssl not found.
dpkg: error processing dokuwiki (--purge):
subprocess post-removal script returned error exit status 100
Errors were encountered while processing:
 dokuwiki

inspecting dokuwiki.postrm shows that the postrm script assumes
if /etc/apache-ssl/httpd.conf exists, that apache-ssl is installed.
This is not true. Either because apache-ssl is removed but not purged,
or because the admin created this file for some other reason without
installing apache-ssl at all.

Second:
# Remove the Include directive
grep -v '^Include /etc/dokuwiki/apache.conf$'
/etc/$srv/httpd.conf $tfile
mv $tfile /etc/$srv/httpd.conf
I doubt that this is an agreed upon API as required by
http://release.debian.org/etch_rc_policy.txt

3. Configuration files
...
Packages must not modify other packages' configuration files
except by an agreed upon APIs (eg, a /usr/sbin/update-foo command).

defined in arch/um/kernel/process_kern.c and declared in

Severity: grave
Tags: security
Justification: user security hole

Greetings. I'm filing this bug report to keep track of the following
security issue.

[DSA 985-1] New libtasn1-2 packages fix arbitrary code execution
was released on 6 Mar 2006, in regard to Bugtraq ID 16568 / CVE-2006-0645.

It states, in part: For the unstable distribution (sid) these problems
will be fixed soon. For the record, the current unstable version,
0.2.17-2, is also the curent testing version.

Soon has expired ;) Please patch/repair (there is a patch available for
the stable version, 0.2.10-3sarge1 - I don't know if this helps or not).

Thanks much,

Bug#354075: Does not mount with NFS user server

2006-04-28 Thread LaMont Jones

I just did an upgrade on my laptop running Sid and found that I could

running Sid as well with the nfs-user-server 2.2beta47-22 package.
Research showed that mount had been upgraded today on my client
machine. Rolling the mount package back to version 2.12r-6 restored
 normal operation.

Could you grab http://incoming.debian.org/mount_2.12r-8.2nfs4_i386.deb
(which will move into the archive - in experimental - in about 90
minutes) and see if that works for you? I it does, I hope to upload
that later today.

thanks,

Bug#365194: [NONFREE-DOC] RFC1459, 2810-2813: IRC (Internet Relay Chat).

2006-04-28 Thread Kurt Roeckx
The RFC's published here all were made by individuals, and were
not made by some IETF process.

rfc1459 comes from a document that was always part of the irc
source package.

For instance, in the software released on 1993-04-05:
ftp://ftp.irc.org/irc/server/Old/irc2.7/irc2.7.2h.tar.Z

irc2.7.2h/doc/Comms says:

rfc1459 was released in May 1993.

Afaik, 2.8 versions don't have the doc/Comms file anymore
since it was published as an rfc, but all previous version
did. And the document clearly had an GPL license.

Note that rfc1459 doesn't have any copyright notice or
anything like that in it, unlike 2810-2813.

rfc2810-2813 is basicly 1459 split in a few RFCs, with
some updates. As part of the copyright statement it says:

   However, this
document itself may not be modified in any way, such as by removing
the copyright notice or references to the Internet Society or other
Internet organizations, except as needed for the purpose of
developing Internet standards in which case the procedures for
copyrights defined in the Internet Standards process must be
followed, or as required to translate it into languages other than
   English.

The source to all the rfc's is also available at
ftp://ftp.irc.org/irc/docs/draft*.nr, but those don't have
any copyright statements either.

Do I need to get the copyright holder of the documents to
relicense it under the GPL? It seems clear to me that it
already is covered by the GPL, but it shouldn't be a
problem to get the copyright holder to explicitly state
that.

Is there something else I can do? Like including those
draft*.nr files (in the next upstream release)?

Kurt

Bug#360653: python-doc: should Build-Depends: on latex2html, which is non-free

2006-04-28 Thread Frank Küster
Francesco Poli [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

 Severity: serious

Python documentation is written in LaTeX and compiled into HTML with
 LaTeX2HTML, which is currently non-free.
It seems that the HTML is shipped pre-built in the source package.

I wanted to look into that bug, but it seems it has been filed against
the wrong package: python-doc doesn't contain any html files, nor LaTeX
sources.

python2.3-doc and its source package do contain both. But I'm reluctant
to simply reassign this to python2.3-doc - what about other python
versions?

Well, then I actually looked into the sources in python2.3, but sorry, I
won't fix this. It's quite a complicate setup to build a bunch of LaTeX
documents, and since I don't want to learn Python, I won't try to grok
the system and adapt it to tex4ht or hevea, sorry.

Bug#363061: [tex-live] Unclear License of AMSLaTeX

2006-04-28 Thread Karl Berry
- the current LPPL allows to change the internal identification as an
alternative to renaming the file, and

Indeed, this is the main difference between the Knuth license and the
current LPPL, as I know you know.

- it does not permit to distribute changed versions, even when renamed,

Well, once you have a changed version, further copying of that unchanged
version could perhaps be construed as permitted under clause (1).

- this text doesn't even allow to copy amsclass.dtx to amsclass.dtx.bak

Hmm. Perhaps the name change could be interpreted as part of if you do
make changes, ie, one possible change is changing the name. Imagine
cp amsclass.dtx{,.bak}, changing one byte, then reverting the one byte ...

I am straining to find a way to interpret the clauses non-literally
because I agree with you that the wording here is not ideal. However,
amslatex is not the only issue. plain.tex and other basic TeX system
files written by DEK (and others) are under a similar license.
Furthermore, tex.web and mf.web are under an even more restrictive
license.

I do not believe it is in the overall public interest to ask DEK to
spend one second contemplating these things instead of working on the
Art of Computer Programming. I am also virtually certain (barbara might
chime in) that it would be a waste of time, as he has made his wishes
clear many, many times and would not be inclined to change anything.
The fact that a literal interpretation of his license texts is not
perfectly congruent with his wishes is an unfortunate fact of life.

Needless to say, TeX Live is not ever going to consider TeX as
nonfree :).
