Bug#372259: user-mode-linux: the uml_switch control file is not been searched as in uml-utilities package

2006-06-09 Thread alex bodnaru
Package: user-mode-linux
Version: 2.6.16-1um-2
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

hello,

this is a change in required parameters that left me with no networking
in uml.
i'm using uml with eth0=daemon option. if no uml_switch control file is
specified, linux has previously (probably) searched it as configured in
the uml-utilities package, while now it searches it in the loacation
default for uml_switch upstream itself.
while it's grave (the uml networking is quite vital), there is a simple
workaround: specify the exact control file location with the daemon arg.

Bug#232058: cutter doesn't recognize connections on 2.6 kernel

I do not really know if this problem 2.6 kernel-specific or not...

I've looked into this and fixed it. The problem was that some fields
were added to /proc/net/ip_conntrack for 2.6 and cutter wasn't able
to parse them.

I've attached 2 /proc/net/ip_conntrack dumps, one from a 2.4 machine
and one from a 2.6 box.

Also attached is a patch that fixes the parsing issues.
Unfortunately I couldn't test it on 2.6, since I don't have a router
running linux 2.6. I've only tested the parsing part on 2.6.

On 2.4 everything continues to work fine with my patch. Parsing
still works and cutting the connection also functions. On 2.6
parsing works well to, and as far as I could test it, killing
connections also works.

Blars, do you care to upload this (probably alongside with the
cleanup work I submitted in #372251)?

Cheers,
Christian Aichinger

Bug#372240: idle-python2.3: unsatisfiable dependency on python2.3-tk (= 2.4.3)

   idle-python2.3 depends on python2.3-tk (= 2.4.3), which is impossible
to satisfy because the latest nonvirtual version of python2.3-tk was
2.3.5-9.1 and dpkg does not (yet?) support versioned dependencies on
virtual packages. As such, could you please either drop the version
   specification or depend on python-tk (= 2.4.3)?

Depending on python-tk (= 2.4.3) is incorrect, because future versions of
python-tk are not guaranteed to implement python2.3-tk at all. I'm pretty
sure Matthias knows this, though -- just mentioning for the bug log. :)

Since I assume the python2.3-tk 2.3.5-3sarge1 in sarge does *not* satisfy
idle-python2.3's needs, the most correct dependency seems to be:

   Depends: python2.3-tk (= 2.4.3) | python-tk (= 2.4.3), python2.3-tk

There are three ways this dependency would be satisfied -- a real
  python2.3-tk package with a version = 2.4.3, a python-tk package = 2.4.3
that provides python2.3-tk, or a python-tk package which doesn't provide
  python2.3-tk plus a python2.3-tk package 2.4.3 which is co-installable
with python-tk. The last of these is obviously incorrect, but I don't see
any fix for that which isn't worse (except implementing versioned
  Provides...).

AJ points out that the obvious fix is to have idle-python2.3 also Conflict:
 python2.3-tk ( 2.4.3).

yes, that looks fine. Although in the long term, dropping the
versioned packages for idle makes sense as well.

Bug#323099: License of wget.texi: suggest removal of invariant sections

2006-06-09 Thread Don Armstrong
Just wanted to touch bases with you again to make sure that what we
are requesting was reasonably clear, and the reasoning behind it was
understandable.

If you have any additional questions, please let me know.

Just in case it was lost, I suggest changing:

Permission is granted to copy, distribute and/or modify this document
under the terms of the GNU Free Documentation License, Version 1.2 or
any later version published by the Free Software Foundation; with the
Invariant Sections being ``GNU General Public License'' and ``GNU Free
Documentation License'', with no Front-Cover Texts, and with no
Back-Cover Texts. A copy of the license is included in the section
entitled ``GNU Free Documentation License''.

which would resolve the (admittedly rather nitpicky) issues which
would keep Debian from being able to distribute the wget texinfo
documentation in the stable release. [In case it wasn't clear, #323099
is a bug that needs to be fixed before we can release; there are only
two solutions available to Noèl Köthe: the change I've suggested, or
removal of the GFDL documentation.]

hello,

this is a change in required parameters that left me with no networking
in uml.
i'm using uml with eth0=daemon option. if no uml_switch control file is
specified, linux has previously (probably) searched it as configured in
the uml-utilities package, while now it searches it in the loacation
default for uml_switch upstream itself.
while it's grave (the uml networking is quite vital), there is a simple
workaround: specify the exact control file location with the daemon arg.

Bug#366948: xfig can't find fonts

2006-06-09 Thread Steve Langasek
tags 366948 -fixed
thanks

This bug isn't actually fixed. The NMUed gsfonts-x11 package does run the
correct update commands for the new directory, but the reason gsfonts-x11 is
breaking people's fonts is that it's failing to clean up after itself in the
*old* directory -- leaving a fonts.dir file in place referring to
non-existent fonts and generally making a mess of the font path.

It looks like this also needs a separate bug on dh_installxfonts, which
fails to handle this possibility in its current maintainer script snippets;
but it still requires gsfonts-x11 to clean up after what the old version of
the package may have left behind.

Bug#323099: License of wget.texi: suggest removal of invariant sections

2006-06-09 Thread Hrvoje Niksic
I understand and agree with the reasoning behind removing the GPL as
the invariant section; but why also remove the GFDL as an invariant
section?

This bug is my fault as I submitted the lockold patch and thought
I had it tested. I am sorry for the inconvenience.

I think adding lockold to BSD and memtest is good.

Please consider the attached patch as well. It also fixes the
issue, but the proposed change to memtest and BSD should still be
done.

Er, samba has been linked with libldap_r.so.2 for well over a year on
Debian, and you're the only person to ever claim that this causes problems.
Whether or not libldap_r is linked against libpthread really should make no
difference, when samba itself is not multithreaded and therefore there are
no threads being spawned. Anyway, the backtrace in the bug report shows a
hang in pthread *after glibc has aborted with an error in free()*; any
problem with libpthread deadlocking is definitely secondary to this.

Samba should use a non-threaded ldap client library.

There is no such thing in Debian. It was killed off because having both
threaded and non-threaded versions of libldap caused *way* more problems.

Bug#339541: Bug is bad use of `readlink' in `ucf' triggered by dangling link

2006-06-09 Thread Ian Jackson
clone 339541 -1
reassign -1 ucf
retitle -1 ucf takes not enough care using readlink -f
tags -1 + patch
reassign 339541 gnus
retitle 339541 gnus should clean up old absurd /etc site-start.d link
thanks

I have this bug too. I have investigated and conclude that it is
caused as follows:

 * On my system, which was installed as Debian 0.93R5 and has never
   been reinstalled, /etc/xemacs21/site-start.d/20gnus-init.el was
(until I just fixed it by hand) a symlink to
   /usr/share/emacs/site-lisp/gnus/gnus-init.el. I assume this must
have been done by some older gnus package since I wouldn't do
   anything so silly.

The current gnus package should be made to try to fix this up. The
best thing is probably to try to look only for the specific
erroneous link (eg, compare the output of readlink with the fixed
target filename) and remove the link if it exists. I would be very
happy to review and comment on the proposed patch.

Removing the link and rerunning the failed install (dpkg
--configure --pending or choose your own rune) fixed it.

 * /usr/lib/emacsen-common/packages/install/gnus uses `ucf';
   in particular it runs
  ucf /usr/share/emacs/site-lisp/gnus/lisp/gnus-init.el \
  /etc/xemacs21/site-start.d/20gnus-init.el
ucf is a shell script with set -e and does this
  readlink -nf $dest_file
but, as the documentation for readlink says, use of the -f flag can
cause readlink to silently exit nonzero. The code should
   probably be changed to
  readlink -nf $dest_file || :
since readlink also signals this error by printing no output
and then the subsequent diagnostic will appear. This would have
resulted in the emacs install failing with the message
  /etc/xemacs21/site-start.d/20gnus-init.el is a broken symlink!
and would have saved us some chasing about.

I have to say that this bug report seems to show a number of people
flailing around without attempting anything resembling sane debugging
techniques. With the proper use of set -x and/or strace this bug
wasn't too hard to track down even though it was something of a wild
goose chase.

Ian.

Thank you, and sorry for any eventual mistake.

That's over a year old. Please consider upgrading to R 2.3.1 -- which is
even provided as 'stable backport' directly on CRAN, thanks to Chris
Steigies. [ We can't update Debian stable as it is frozen. ] Instructions are
in any recent R FAQ (ie read it on the web, not from your 2.1.0 package).

Many many bugs upstream, and a few in Debian were fixed, incl. something
similar or identical to this.

Hope this helps, Dirk

Bug#295270: Messages cannot be deleted and index file gets corrupted when there isn't enough disk space

2006-06-09 Thread Fabian Fagerholm
Hi!

I just submitted a bug upstream which sounds partly similar to Debian
bugs #295270 and #347703. In the bug, I describe the cache corruption
happening without the disk being full, resulting in a total freeze plus
100% CPU usage. This is using IMAP for mail access.

In retrospect, I could have chosen one of the existing bugs and appended
the information to that. Perhaps it's the same bug, perhaps it's not.
I'm not sure, so I'll let someone else decide later and merge/mark as
duplicate as appropriate.

In any case, the bug report includes the compressed contents of one
corrupted mailbox cache. I hope it can be of assistance in debugging
this problem.

Here it is: http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=344382

Package: beaver
Version: 0.2.5-2
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

beaver ships /usr/X11R6/bin as a directory (albeit an empty one),
creating a conflict with recent versions of x11-common, which would
replace it by a symlink. I imagine this should be simple to fix.

idle-python2.3 depends on python2.3-tk (= 2.4.3), which is impossible
to satisfy because the latest nonvirtual version of python2.3-tk was
2.3.5-9.1 and dpkg does not (yet?) support versioned dependencies on
virtual packages. As such, could you please either drop the version
specification or depend on python-tk (= 2.4.3)?

idle-python2.4 has a similar problem, BTW.

Justification: breaks unrelated software

Currently, neither python2.3-gnome2-extras nor python2.4-gnome2-extras depend
on mozilla-browser. Without this dependency, any software which use gtkembedmoz
python binding will crash if mozilla-browser isn't installed.

These packages probably will depend on libxul0d in the furture, if it can be
build against xulrunner.

Bug#372488: FTBFS: ambiguous exceptions with gcc 4.1

2006-06-09 Thread martin f krafft
Package: libbuffy
Severity: serious
Tags: fixed-upstream confirmed patch

Building the source with gcc 4.1 returns a million errors like

config/Config.cc:244: error: reference to ‘exception’ is ambiguous
./wibble/exception.h:76: error: candidates are: namespace wibble::exception { }
/usr/lib/gcc/x86_64-linux-gnu/4.1.2/../../../../include/c++/4.1.2/exception:55:

Patch attached and committed to svn (r184).

Bug#372487: python-numarray(-ext): Python-Version: syntax vs. pycentral

2006-06-09 Thread Aaron M. Ucko
Package: python-numarray
Version: 1.5.1-2
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

The latest python-numarray and python-numarray-ext packages seem to
confuse pycentral:

 Setting up python-numarray (1.5.1-2) ...
 Traceback (most recent call last):
   File /usr/bin/pycentral, line 1293, in ?
 main()
File /usr/bin/pycentral, line 1287, in main
 rv = action.run(global_options)
File /usr/bin/pycentral, line 868, in run
 version_info = list(calc_versions(rt_versions, pkg.version_field))
   File /usr/bin/pycentral, line 91, in calc_versions
 vinfo = parse_versions(vstring)
   File /usr/bin/pycentral, line 76, in parse_versions
 op, v = m.group(1), m.group(2)
AttributeError: 'NoneType' object has no attribute 'group'
 dpkg: error processing python-numarray (--configure):
subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 1

Comparing them to other packages that use python-central, I observe
that they specify Python-Version differently, as

Python-Version: python (= 2.3), python ( 2.5), python-central

rather than the more common

Python-Version: 2.3, 2.4

 I suspect you're missing a versioned depends on libgtk2-perl.

Are you sure? My libgtk2-perl has no such file (the closest is
Gtk2/SimpleList.pm), and apt-file can't find any either. Perhaps this belongs
to a package simply not in Debian?

Bug#302127: Better patch

2006-06-09 Thread Stephen Gran
This one time, at band camp, Peter Eisentraut said:
I have found that the following patch works better. It avoids slow-to-stop
ntpd child processes messing the whole thing up, especially during a restart.

Using --exec on stop is going to fail on some kinds of upgrades (a
restart in postinst, for instance) since the binary will have changed
after the upgrade. I have no idea if ntpd uses that sort of logic in
the maintainer scripts (I suspect not, from the output during upgrade),
but it does seem cleaner to use the normal pidfile method.

Take care,

Aha, you are using CONFIG_HIPPI -- that's marked as experimental and is
rather obscure. (It seems to be some kind of supercomputer networking

I vaguely remember HIPPI. It's been a long time ago. The strange thing
is that CONFIG_HIPPI is set in the default Debian config:

/boot/config-2.6.15-1-k7:CONFIG_HIPPI=y

I'll try without HIPPI again.

(I can reproduce this with your .config, even though I had to run it through

I wonder why you have to use oldconfig.

*I* don't need an NMU. But zou may want to file a bug against the Debian
default kernel config ;-)

I'll report back when I have run a kernel build without HIPPI.

Bug#372493: cupsys: unable to print, configure, or check status in 1.2.1-2

2006-06-09 Thread Moshe Yudkowsky
Package: cupsys
Version: 1.2.1-2
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

I simply cannot get cupsys to run after my upgrade to 1.2.1-2. Printing does
not work, and the usual admin tools do not work either.

If I use http://localhost:631/admin, I see the error message Unable to open
cupsd.conf file: Permission denied. A quick check of /etc/cups/cupsd.conf
shows it has permissions of root and lpadmin. (I note that this new version
of the admin page does not request a login/password.)

If I attemp to use command-line utilties to check on the printers, I get:

# lpstat
lpstat: Forbidden

and

# lpstat -t
scheduler is running
no system default destination
lpstat: Forbidden
lpstat: Forbidden
lpstat: Forbidden
lpstat: Forbidden
lpstat: Forbidden

If I use http://localhost:631/printers to view the printers, I see the
printers, but with error messages such as /usr/lib/cups/backend/usb failed.
The printer state is stopped. I have also seen messages that complain about
being unable to read the spool files in /var/spool/cups.

The port is active, at least:

# lsof -i :631
COMMAND PID USER FD TYPE DEVICE SIZE NODE NAME
cupsd 12425 root0u IPv6 1209941 TCP *:ipp (LISTEN)
cupsd 12425 root1u IPv4 1209942 TCP *:ipp (LISTEN)
cupsd 12425 root2u IPv4 1209943 UDP *:ipp

I tried removing my old cupsd.conf file and using the default version but that
did not help. A downgrade to stable fails completely -- the server at port
631 doesn't even start up.

This smells like an authorization problem to me, but I can't figure out where
the problem is.

standard.) The offending lines are:

  #ifdef CONFIG_HIPPI
  n-private.ifield=skb-private.ifield;
  #endif /* CONFIG_HIPPI */

(I can reproduce this with your .config, even though I had to run it through
make oldconfig first.)

Given http://lkml.org/lkml/2005/9/13/274 I believe that the line can simply
be dropped. Let me know if you need an NMU :-)

Bug#366948: xfig can't find fonts

2006-06-09 Thread Adeodato Simó
* Steve Langasek [Fri, 09 Jun 2006 03:21:01 -0700]:

Hey, Steve.

 tags 366948 -fixed

Okay, I spent a while to dig out what's happening, since I wasn't really
familiar with all the xfonts-utils and debhelper saga, but now I have a
pretty clear idea of where the bug is, or so I think. :)

In any case:

  - gsfonts-x11 (both 0.19 and 0.19.0.1) effectively leaves behind in
/usr/lib/X11/fonts/Type1/fonts.{scale,dir}. I haven't had the time
to see if this is what effectively was making xfig fail, but I can
believe so, and in any case these leftovers constitute a bug, yes.

  - Steve, despite you talk about horribly broken maintainer scripts in
gsfonts-x11, I fail to see anything wrong with them. preinst is the
most scary of them, but only acts in versions = 0.7, and as for
postinst and postrm, they just contain the dh_installxfonts snippet.

  - that gsfonts-x11 leaves stuff in X11R6/fonts.dir is consistent with
the changes introduced in #364530: update-fonts-dir only acts in one
directory at a time (checked as well with another package, xfonts-jmk
maintained by Russ Albery). However, changes from #364530 _did_
change update-fonts-scale to act on both X11R6/$1 and X11R7/$1, so
leaving stuff in X11R6/fonts.alias smells fishy.

And, as it happens (or at least, as it happened on tests I did on my
system), update-fonts-scale fails to update the fonts.alias file in
directories that have become _empty_. See the two attached patches
to see how does this happen; either of them (or similar) should be
applied to the xfonts-utils package.

It looks like this also needs a separate bug on dh_installxfonts, which
 fails to handle this possibility in its current maintainer script snippets;
but it still requires gsfonts-x11 to clean up after what the old version of
the package may have left behind.

  - the issue for fonts.dir is still unresolved, indeed. Either
dh_installxfonts is changed to invoke update-fonts-dir not only once,
but twice (once with --x11r7-layout and one without), or to change
update-fonts-dir to act like update-fonts-scale. Since it was decided
not to do the latter, and I ignore the reasons for that, I won't
give an opinion about this.

I propose the following snnippet to be sent to control@:

clone 366948 -1
reassign -1 xfonts-utils 1:1.0.0-4
retitle -1 update-scale-fonts: fails on empty dirs
tags -1 = patch
tag 366948 + fixed

Thanks,

Bug#369626: [Buildd-tools-devel] Bug#369626: schroot: rm -rf in file chroot cleanup destroys real /home if umount fails

The session cleanup in 10mount ignores failures of umount invocations
and cleanup continues. In the case of file chroots with a /home bind
mount that failed to umount, the rm -rf in 05file blindly descends into
the system /home with obvious unpretty results.

There are a few possibilities here.

 1) 10mount should exit with an error if umount fails.

Caveat: if the session is ended with the setup scripts having
failed, this would require manual cleanup by the system admin.
This needs additional work in session::setup_chroot() in
sbuild-session.cc, so that the session is not ended if the scripts
fail. This means not removing the session file from
/var/lib/schroot/session/ on failure.

Currently, because of the above consideration, the setup-stop
phase of the session scripts can not fail.

If a umount fails it will require manual admin intervention anyway so
that wouldn't make much of a difference. Making the rm -rf safe is
still required in any case, I'd say.

OK, I agree here. In the patch below, any umount failure will abort
the cleanup.

 2) 05file must check if any filesystems are mounted under the chroot
root before running rm -rf. Is there a portable and reliable way
of doing this? Would

if mount | grep $CHROOT_MOUNT_LOCATION; then
:
  else
rm -rf $CHROOT_MOUNT_LOCATION || true
  fi

be sufficient?

I don't think that is safe. It depends on all mounts being recorded in
/etc/mtab, which is not the case if something *inside* the chroot
 mounted something, for example.

I thought about rm with a do not cross filesystems option, still that
wouldn't help because binds may well be on the same filesystem. There
are no usable criteria for using find ... -exec rm ... either.

To work around this, I wrote a program called schroot-listmounts,
which uses /proc/mounts to get a list:

./schroot/schroot-listmounts -m /srv/chroot/sid
/srv/chroot/sid/tmp
/srv/chroot/sid/home
/srv/chroot/sid/dev/shm
/srv/chroot/sid/dev/pts
/srv/chroot/sid

The shell script can read this list and unmount them in turn.

The only way I know to be sure there are no submounts is to mount --bind
the chroot to a temporary location and rm -rf there, then unmount the
temporary bind and rmdir the chroot.

The rmdir will fail safely if the chroot isn't empty then. Even before,
the rm -rf of the temp bind will fail safely upon trying to remove an
empty directory used as a mount point in the chroot.

I think I now have this solved. If the chroot directories are
unmounted, schroot-listmounts will list nothing:

./schroot/schroot-listmounts -m
/var/lib/schroot/mount/testsnap-c4e53f96-e507-40e8-8cf4-fcfd31c17c32
[no output]

so in this case we can be sure it's safe to rm -rf. If there's any
output at all, we know it's not safe.

I've attached a patch for this. Note: it's not yet tested; this is
just to give you an idea of what I'm thinking of as a solution. If
the testing works out, and you are happy with it, I'll include this in
the next release.

Bug#372498: ksynaptics: incompatible with xfree86-driver-synaptics 0.14.5-1

2006-06-09 Thread Modestas Vainius
Package: ksynaptics
Version: 0.2.4-2
Severity: grave

Hello,

the package seems to imcompatible with xfree86-driver-synaptics source
version 0.14.5-1. As soon as I start KDE, my touchpad starts misbehaving
(e.g. the whole touchpad becomes a big scroll zone and I can't move a
cursor until I press any key on the keyboard etc.). Downgrading
xserver-xorg-input-synaptic to 0.14.4-4 resolves the issue.

It seems that a similar bug was filed againt gsynaptics and was
resolved today. See here:
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=372164

Btw, a new version of ksynaptics has been available for quite some time
now.

Are you sure? My libgtk2-perl has no such file (the closest is
Gtk2/SimpleList.pm), and apt-file can't find any either. Perhaps this belongs
to a package simply not in Debian?

No idea. I tried running it on stable, so I just assumed that it must
work in unstable. Looking at p.d.o, it does appear you're right...
