Bug#372498: News about this bug? (ksynaptics: incompatible with xfree86-driver-synaptics 0.14.5-1)

2006-06-15 Thread Christian Perrier
Actually, after the various mail exchanges about this topic, I'd like
to thank Arnaud for all the good work on the *synaptics things.

I happen to have been partly the one reviving this because I worried
bout the #372498 bug which hit me hard and I'm glad that things are
currently setting up to solve all this.

I'm here only a user and certainly can't be of any help. But this is
actually the occasion to thank everybody involved in all this because
all these synaptics things have been, up to now, something that has
been pretty much transparent to me: it just used to work, that's
all..:-)

One last contribution I'd like to add is suggesting to add the
relevant packages to the laptop task in tasksel. Given that
synaptics and related touchpads are very common on laptops these days,
it seems pretty much relevant, imho.

xfree86-driver-synaptics is already listed there (should be replaced
by xserver-xorg-input-synaptics, I guess) but I think that both ksynaptics and
gsynaptics should also (given that the desktop tasks installs both
KDE and Gnome).

This is just a matter of sending a wishlist BR to tasksel, indeed.

Bug#368546: bug 368546: Could this be caused by hardware overheating?

2006-06-15 Thread Christian Marillat
Graham [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes:

 Hi Christian,

Hi,

I sometimes check the RC bug list, and this bug somewhat intrigued me.

 http://bugs.debian.org/368546

I once saw symptoms somewhat like this on a laptop: the system was
extremely slow, even with nothing running, and the load average was
very high. It was running KDE.

I believe it was a thermal issue: many current CPUs can throttle to
very low speeds when they detect a severe overheat condition. In my
case, blowing 3 years of dust out of the heatsinks seemed to solve the
 problem.

So, I would suggest checking lm-sensors, and/or acpi -V, both when
the system is running properly, and when it is abnormally slow.

Obviously I can't be sure whether this is a hardware or software
problem, but checking the hardware is relatively easy to do, so it
 might be worthwhile.

Thanks for the comment, but you should send that to the BTS 5See the Cc:)

Christian

Bug#373700: posixtestsuite: Building the package as root on amd64 changes the system clock permanently

2006-06-15 Thread Andreas Jochens
Package: posixtestsuite
Version: 1.5.1-1
Severity: grave

Hello,

I created a clean amd64/unstable chroot environment and tried to build
the 'posixtestsuite' package inside the chroot as the root user with
'dpkg-buildpackage'.

The build completed, but at the end of the build
the system clock had been changed to 2002-11-12 19:25:26.

I can reproduce this behaviour, i.e. every time I build the package on
amd64 the system clock is changed permanently during the build.
The offsets are different in each case (ranging from a few days
to a few years).

Regards
Andreas Jochens

Is there any progress on this? This bug is currently (indirectly) what's
holding up removal of xorg-x11 from unstable, so I guess fixing it soonish
would be a good idea, if at all possible. :-)

Well, I guess it's not a good idea to build this package as root then... :)

I can't justify keeping this bug at RC severity, though. This clearly
doesn't have any usability or data loss impact on users, it doesn't /fail/
to build, and while this might be considered data loss of a sort when
building, it's not the common case to build as root and I would suggest that
it's generally not advisable to do so with any package. (If the package is
put together right, this isn't even happening in one of the as-root targets,
so even using -rsudo should be ok, yes?)

So, downgrading, though obviously we should want to see this fixed.

Cheers,

work. Perhaps it makes sense to add the stable tag to this, since it

2006-06-15 Thread Frank Küster
Paul Slootman [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

So does it make sense that I start of with the old ones? I guess I need

 Yes...

So you mean the structure won't change much, and if I provide a patch
against that it will still kind of apply to your new ones?

config, postinst and maybe the templates file.

 Here's a quick shot, untested:

 In wwwoffle.config:

 if [ -s /etc/cron.d/wwwoffle ]; then
   ... as before ...
elif [ -n $CONFIG_ARG2 ]; # do this only when this is not a fresh install
db_set wwwoffle/fetchfrequency off
 fi

 db_get wwwoffle/fetchfrequency ###
 rc=$?
 - if [ $rc -eq 0 -o $rc -ge 30 ]; then # bashism, and won't catch off

Hmm, that's not what I have in my wwwoffle.config ... 2.8e-2 at least
 doesn't have that.

Strange, I must have looked at the sarge version or whatever. Just
fetched the current sid version, and this part looks okay to me.

Besides, -o is NOT a bashism, I've been using that since SystemVR2.
 ash accepts it fine also.

You're right, it's not a bashism, and even dash understands it when
called as /bin/sh. It's not POSIX, though, and posh doesn't know about
it. Doesn't matter much, probably.

But I don't understand the purpose of the first test where I fixed the
bashism - why do you only act on the crontab file if the value is zero
or if it is at least 30? That means that I can't set it to 20 via
 debconf, doesn't it?

 You seriously need to study debconf the value is in $RET;
here $rc contains the status, not the debconf value.
 30 == question not asked.

Sorry, as I said this was just a quick shot, I didn't think about it
thoroughly. Of course I already knew the difference, and we should stop
accusing each other of not having understood debconf (either the usage
or the purpose...).

I also don't have much time currently, therefore I can't promise you a
working patch right now.

Regards, Frank

Bug#373643: Unsupported or non-substituted DATADIRNAME variable in Makefile.in.in template

automake 1.9 and the latest autoconf package.

Ok, could you try calling GLIB_WITH_NLS in configure.ac before
intltool? Could you provide the necessary files to reproduce your
problem? (perhaps the upstream CVS location if it's public)

   It is also a bit
surprising to me, that $itlocaledir does not make use of $datadir.
Instead it uses this (IMHO) crappy (sorry) expression
'$(prefix)/$(DATADIRNAME)/locale' Is there a special reason for this?

One thing at a time. :)

(You can file another bug report on that particular problem.)

Further the --localedir options was introduced recently. IMHO the used
expression will ignore this option. So IMHO, a check for configure.ac
should be added to test on $localedir and the current solution (without
the bug) should be the fallback (IMHO this is a suggestion for
 upstream).

I don't understand this last part.

Well, you are not supposed to ;-). When you write The futex() stop

that you get an endless loop or that the program hangs waiting for

Bug#372179: AC_CANONICAL_SYSTEM overwrites $@

2006-06-15 Thread Tollef Fog Heen

[EMAIL PROTECTED] people: This is Debian bug report #372179, available at
http://bugs.debian.org/372179 . Autoconf sometime after 2.59 changed
the behaviour of AC_CANONICAL_SYSTEM in a way that mangles [EMAIL PROTECTED]
This
causes problems for APR_PARSE_ARGUMENTS which makes for hilarious
build failures when using --includedir and --with-layout (as done in
the Debian packages of apr and apr-util, for instance)

* Ben Pfaff

| I've seen a flurry of Debian BTS emails around this bug, but none
| of them have made it clear to me what I should do about it.

I'm unsure what the right fix is, apart from «make autoconf stop
mangling [EMAIL PROTECTED] or «make apr and apr-util not need to reparse [EMAIL
PROTECTED]

| In the long term, I suspect that the Autoconf macros in the
| apr-util package should be fixed, and that autoconf-doc should
| document that $@ may be changed by some macros. In the short
| term, I'm willing to help out, if necessary, by putting some kind
| of Debian-specific patch that saves and restores the positional
| parameters (if indeed there's a way to do that) around
| AC_CANONICAL_SYSTEM.

Apart from the «ewww» factor, why can't it do its work in a subshell
and echo back the parameters to be set and those get eval-ed by
configure?

I too suspect that the apr macros should be fixed to not rely on $@,
but this was a sudden and unannounced change in the Debian packages
without a significant bump in the version number. (Personally, I'd
treat this as an API bump and increase version number and possibly
package name similarly, but I guess not everybody'll agree with me
there.)

Also, please Cc me on replies as I don't read bug-autoconf or

Bug#373713: gpass doesen't work at all on Gnome 2.14 (Debian unstable)

2006-06-15 Thread Raistlin
Package: gpass
Version: 0.5.0-1.1
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

gpass doesen't even start in Gnome 2.14 in Debian Sid and
I've found, by a Web search, it behaves the same on other distros too...

When trying to start it from a terminal it says:
(gpass:12319): libglade-WARNING **: could not find signal handler
  'gpass_authentication_on_response'.

Then the authentication mask appears but neither the 'Authenticate' and
the 'Cancel' button produce any kind of action and the mask hangs itself
(I've to kill it with 'kill -9')

The problem is quite annoying, expecially if you've got some important
passwords in the software's database!! :O

Many Thanks,
Dario Faggioli

 Version: 1.02.00-1

This bug was fixed upstream and is already in debian.

This is still there in version 0.trunk20050206-1, and given that you
mention version 1.02.00-1 I suppose you were talking about another
package.

Package: evolution-exchange
Version: 2.6.1-1
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

Attempting to connect to a server running Exchange 2003 fails. Account
setup via Evolution gets as far as the Server Type screen, but when
Exchange is selected, the Forward button remains greyed out, and the
only other information asked for is the userid. It is possible to get
past this stage of the process by switching to another server type, and
then switching back to Exchange. This allows account setup to complete,
but attempting to access the account fails.

Setting up the account using ximian-connector-setup-2.6 asks for the
OWA URL, username, and password. When these values are entered, the
connector setup authenticates successfully against the Exchange server,
and populates the name and email address fields correctly on the next
setup screen. Entering an invalid password or userid at the first stage
throws an authentication error, so this bit clearly works correctly.

However, after setup with x-c-s, starting Evolution immediately pops up
an Enter password for [EMAIL PROTECTED] dialog box. I enter the correct
password and get Scanning folders, then the password dialog box pops
up again. I enter the correct password and get Scanning folders, and
so on.

Running ethereal while this is going on, I can see a connection to the
server when the account is set up with x-c-s, but I can see no network
traffic to the machine at all when Evolution is running. It may be
relevant that I'm accessing the OWA service over https.

 Hi Michael,

I have problem running eclipse in Etch (it was also the case with
Sid). When launching /usr/bin/eclise, I have the splash screnn, then an
error window appears with: Problems Opening page. When I want more
details, I have: empty document, with no root element.

Do you have an idea about this problem?

This render eclipse package unusable for me.

Note: an upstream installation works with jamvm from Sid.

I can't reproduce this here on i386. Can you please make the output
of /usr/bin/eclise -debug -consoleLog available?

Cheers,
Michael

Ah, thanks -- that's because the later versions of quodlibet don't include
the changelog entry from 0.15-2, so debbugs doesn't know they include the
fix.

Marking the bug closed in 0.16-1 as well, since that seems to be the case.

Bug#373643: Unsupported or non-substituted DATADIRNAME variable in Makefile.in.in template

2006-06-15 Thread Daniel Leidert
Am Donnerstag, den 15.06.2006, 09:46 +0200 schrieb Loïc Minier:
 Hi,

On Wed, Jun 14, 2006, Daniel Leidert wrote:
No. It was a run from a clean CVS-copy running autogen.sh, which runs
intltoolize (the CVS-copy itself does not contain this file, so it is
freshly created from the file /usr/share/intltool/Makefile.in.in). I use
automake 1.9 and the latest autoconf package.

Ok, could you try calling GLIB_WITH_NLS in configure.ac before
intltool? Could you provide the necessary files to reproduce your
problem? (perhaps the upstream CVS location if it's public)

I don't need the GLIB macros. I just ran AM_PO_SUBDIRS (or in the past,
I ran AM_GNU_GETTEXT, which is a bit overkill - but in bug #365727 I was
now told to use AM_PO_SUBDIRS for my purpose - atm I removed them
completely, because IT_PROG_INTLTOOL seems enough - except of the
DATADIRNAME variable issue). The necessity of the GLIB_* macros would be
some kind of overkill and a crap dependency, because the project uses
intltool for XML file internationalization and doesn't need any
libglib2.0-dev dependency. The code is available at
http://sourceforge.net/projects/chemical-mime/ CVS (the upload was done
some minutes ago, so anonymous CVS may lack the latest changes, I put
some archives to http://debian.wgdd.de/temp/
(chemical-mime-data-0.1.94.tar.{gz,bz2}).

http://chemical-mime.cvs.sourceforge.net/chemical-mime/chemical-mime-data/

run ./autogen ./configure disable-update-database

then run make and try an installation with DESTDIR=whateveryouwant to
reproduce the issue. DATADIRNAME has no value.

It is also a bit
surprising to me, that $itlocaledir does not make use of $datadir.
Instead it uses this (IMHO) crappy (sorry) expression
'$(prefix)/$(DATADIRNAME)/locale' Is there a special reason for this?

One thing at a time. :)

Well, the expression here uses the problematic DATADIRNAME variable,
which is not supported/not substituted. So I think, this is some related
information. Changing $itlocaledir to '$itlocaledir=$datadir/locale'
changes the problematic code to a working one.

The latest autoconf package adds support for a --localedir configure
option. So it is possible to define the location for the locales as
$localedir. This adds the possibility to add a check to configure.ac,
which tests, if $localedir is empty. If it is, the fallback could be
localedir=$datadir/locale or intltools (crappy) expression: localedir=
$(prefix)/$(DATADIRNAME)/locale. But this is really not directly related
to the issue I reported and something, I should tell upstream :)

Regards, Daniel

Bug#373761: mpfr_2.2.0.dfsg.1-6: FTBFS on hppa with new gmp-4.2: 37 of 117 tests failed

2006-06-15 Thread Joel Soete
Package: libmpfr-dev
Version: 2.2.0.dfsg.1-4
Severity: serious
Justification: no longer builds from source

*** Please type your report below this line ***
Hello Laurent,

As you may be already read in buildd report:
http://buildd.debian.org/fetch.php?pkg=mpfrver=2.2.0.dfsg.1-6arch=hppastamp=1149775099file=logas=raw

the build of the mpfr pakages with newest gmp-4.2.dfsg-1 failled.
And afaik it seems to be now required to rebuild new gcc stuff (gfortran if I
well understood).

I already tried:
  * the rebuild with previous gcc-4.0,
  * the rebuild with -O0 gcc option (in case of optimization pb),
  * rebuild localy latest gmp src 4.2.1 + latest patch,
  * and apply latest mpfr pathes (9 .. 12).

but nothing help.

Thanks in advance for your attention,
Joel

Bug#373763: xserver-xfree86-dbg: Radeon X600 Pro on ChainTech VNF4 PCIE x16 slot not recognised

2006-06-15 Thread gabriel
Package: xserver-xfree86-dbg
Version: 4.3.0.dfsg.1-14sarge1
Severity: critical
Justification: breaks the whole system

I have been working on this probem for about 6 weeks, being new to
Debian, but not to Linux (since kernel r0.9x or r 1.0) or to computation
(since 1958). lspci and strace on xserver-debug suggest some kind of
problem communicating with a driver for card IDs 3e50 and 3e70
(ATI X600 graphics, or VGA). I have an strace log and lspci -vv output.
as well as Xlog, but I may need to send these by separate e-mail from
another machine.
I am not certain whether I hava a H/W problem on the M/B x16 slot.
a GeForce 5200 on a PCI slot works, but a GeForce 6200 on the 16x
   slot does not.
I think my next step may be to buy a different, but not too costly M/B
  of another make.
I should also try the latest ATI driver although ATI do not list the
  X600 as supported.
I forgot to mention that the VGA part of the X600 does work, so I
should also tryconfiguring Xf86Config for VGA.

BTW since I am 75 years old I don't think or work as fast as I did
  even 10 years ago.
I aslo notice on reading the X log the the chipset on the X600 is not
mentioned Hmm. The graphics board OEM by the way was PCPartners,
accoring to the latest list from the PCI web page. I replaced the
list in the Debian AMD64 etch/sarge release by the latest one to
  improve data from lspci.
I am uncertain whether I can read an external file in this editor. If
I cannot, I will send a separate e-mail with my other information.
It is beginning to seem that I must look for another driver somewhere
perhaps the DRI site or the GLX site,
Oh well, I hunted hadware/software problem for longer than this on a
Varian mini perhaps 25 years ago.
Aha, in looking at the report with this note, I see some remarks
about a bus id error, as well as a few other disconcerting things.
I must take another look at my XF86Congif, and make sure that the
reported error is not mine. I have changed that file so often that I
no longer am certain what is in it.
Hmm, it seems possible that this editor is vi, or vi like. I'll
try to add the strace file at the end of everything else.

I will be most grateful for any help you may be able to provide.

Bug#373731: squirrelmail redirect.php local file include vulnerability

2006-06-15 Thread Thijs Kinkhorst
Hello all,

up until the first nul byte. I see that the plugins[] array is actually
never reset in the squirrelmail source or configuration, allowing for
 this kind of things.

Right, I agree that the bug exists; it has been discussed on the
upstream [EMAIL PROTECTED] list but I appearently missed out to
follow up to Debian.

However, I doubt the criticality of the issue. It is only exploitable
with register_globals (rg) set to On.

As you might know:
- the Debian 'squirrelmail' Apache configuration ships with rg disabled;
- the Debian 'php4' configuration ships with rg disabled;
- it is well known and well documented that enabling register_globals is
  a security risk.

Therefore, someone who overrides both the PHP and SquirrelMail default
configuration for this setting, while there is no need at all to do so,
is willingly opening up security risks.

Running with register_globals on not supported with upstream
SquirrelMail and heavily discouraged (?) with PHP.

Of course the bug will be fixed, but for this reason I don't think we
should rush out an advisory or leave this bug to be of serious severity.

I value input on this matter from the security team.

regards,
Thijs
