Christian, see BenH's reply to this. BenH, this is by booting an oldworld with quik, and it certainly solves a problem for Christian, and there have been various bug reports about quik being broken since 2.6.16. Christian, benh mentioned : 09:01 benh but basically, you should add some printk to the code in setup-common that reads the property back from the device-tree 09:02 benh in check_for_initrd() Friendly, Sven Luther On Mon, Sep 18, 2006 at 04:51:14PM +1000, Benjamin Herrenschmidt wrote: On Mon, 2006-09-18 at 08:40 +0200, Sven Luther wrote: Hi benh, can you have a look at this patch ? It fixes the oldworld initramfs problem in newer kernels. Sounds all bogus claims to me. It's certainly shall not be storing the address of val. prom_setprop() takes a pointer to the data to be stored. Data is thus first copied to val, then a pointer to val is passed to prom_setprop. Is the patch actually fixing anything ? Also is this a 32 or 64 bits kernel and is this booting with BootX or open firmware (there is a separate problem with bootx_init.c that has been fixed upstream where it failed to add the initrd to the reserve map). The correct data is there in arch/powerpc/kernel/prom_init.c:prom_check_initrd(), but in init/initramfs.c:populate_rootfs() it's wrong, initrd_{start,end} are both 0. arch/powerpc/kernel/prom_init.c:prom_check_initrd() is broken. The relevant part of the code is: ,-- | unsigned long val; | ... | val = RELOC(prom_initrd_start); | prom_setprop(_prom-chosen, /chosen, linux,initrd-start, |val, sizeof(val)); | val = RELOC(prom_initrd_end); | prom_setprop(_prom-chosen, /chosen, linux,initrd-end, |val, sizeof(val)); `-- As you can see it tries to store pointers to initrd start/end in the /chosen node, however in reality it stores the address of val, a local variable. Since that's long gone invalid when the values are read out from /chosen again, the result is undefined. The attached is a patch fixing the problem. It would be nice if the bug submitters could test it to see if it fixes their problems too. Cheers, Christian Aichinger PS: arch/powerpc/platforms/powermac/bootx_init.c does something similar, though it looks saner, as it copies *val into it's own permanent memory block AFAICS. --- a/arch/powerpc/kernel/prom_init.c 2006-09-15 18:33:50.0 +0200 +++ b/arch/powerpc/kernel/prom_init.c 2006-09-15 18:33:44.0 +0200 @@ -2141,17 +2141,17 @@ struct prom_t *_prom = RELOC(prom); if (r3 r4 r4 != 0xdeadbeef) { - unsigned long val; + unsigned long *ptr; RELOC(prom_initrd_start) = is_kernel_addr(r3) ? __pa(r3) : r3; RELOC(prom_initrd_end) = RELOC(prom_initrd_start) + r4; - val = RELOC(prom_initrd_start); + ptr = RELOC(prom_initrd_start); prom_setprop(_prom-chosen, /chosen, linux,initrd-start, -val, sizeof(val)); -

Bug#386952: cdbs debhelper rules runs dh_fixperms with -X for setuid/setgid binaries, wrongly thinking it is an exact match

Bug#384356: Depending on mzscheme is a bad idea
unblock 384356 by 386485 thanks After discussing with Ari Pollak (maintainer of mzscheme) on IRC, he states that hs-plugins should not depend on mzscheme to build its documentation. mzscheme is not built on all Debian architecture, and depending on such package only to build documentation seems a bit too much. Don Stewart, author of hs-plugins, is switching to full Haddock documentation for the next release. So this won't be problem anymore for the next upstream release. In the meantime, possible solutions that I see to solve this issue: a) Don't build the documentation at all, and point the user to hs-plugins website. b) Build to documentation on the maintainer system and include it in the Debian patch. c) Use another LaTeX to HTML converter to build the documentation with the package. Since upstream is switching to full Haddock documentation for the next release, I would advocate for b) as a temporary solution. I will work on a patch implementing this solution if there is no opositions. Regards, -- Jérémy signature.asc Description: Digital signature

Bug#381452: locate data section to 0x10000000
tag 381452 patch thanks This is a very ugly misdesign in the emacs core. It uses the upper 4 bits of an elisp object pointer for type information. These 4 bits are restored by dereferencing the pointer by ORing it with a well-known platform specific value, 0x1000 on mips. The .data section indeed used to start after 0x1000 with binutils up to 2.16. In binutils 2.17, the ld scripts were modified, and the .data section will start after .text, without a gap (around 0x004a in my test cases). Emacs, however, still ORed the pointer with 0x1000 without checking the facts, and the dereferenced pointer was 0x104a which is invalid, and instantly led to a segmentation fault. I had several ideas to fix this, e.g. setting the OR value to 0, which worked well with binutils 2.17, but would crash with older binutils. I ended up with patching the linker script to restore the old behaviour. See my patch. --- src/m/mips.h.orig 2006-09-18 13:12:35.557829500 +0200 +++ src/m/mips.h2006-09-18 13:12:37.16593 +0200 @@ -142,6 +142,12 @@ /* Alter some of the options used when linking. */ +#ifdef THIS_IS_MAKEFILE +#define LD_SWITCH_MACHINE -T ../../mips.ld +#else +#define LD_SWITCH_MACHINE -T ../mips.ld +#endif + #if !defined(NEWSOS5) !defined(__linux__) #ifdef BSD_SYSTEM --- /dev/null 2006-09-14 13:24:19.0 +0200 +++ debian/mips.ld 2006-09-18 13:12:42.178243250 +0200 @@ -0,0 +1,244 @@ +/* Work around a design flaw in emacs: emacs assumes the data section +begins on address 0x1000, which was true up to binutils version +2.16, but the binutils 2.17 default linker script does not use this +alignment anymore. + +This is actually a patched version of the file +/usr/lib/ldscripts/elf32btsmip.x from binutils 2.17-2. reopen 316321 thanks sorry, i disagree. reload should not start a service that is not running. i suppose current policy is a little ambiguous on the issue, but i brought it up on devel some time before raising the severity and the general consensus was in agreement with me. i also supplied a patch which is fairly trivial, so i don't see what the big deal is. sean On Mon, 2006-09-18 at 05:48 -0700, Debian Bug Tracking System wrote: This is an automatic notification regarding your Bug report #316321: apache2-common: 'reload' init target should not restart server, which was filed against the apache2-common package. Bug#387996: subversion: [m68k] fix for the failing ruby tests
[Roman Zippel] I looked at the failing self tests. The first one is a bug in the created wrapper. The basic problem is that in svn_delta.c:_wrap_svn_txdelta_apply_wrapper() the value of temp3 is not modified by svn_txdelta_apply_wrapper(), so the return is basically random. Thanks for that, I'll pass it on to upstream. This test has failed on multiple architectures in the past, somewhat at random, related to the exact conditions under which ruby itself was compiled. I hope your patch fixes all of that. The other two failures are a bug in the test itself, which simply take a bit too much time on m68k, so I modified the test a little to accept a small delay. Yes, those two were obvious - I already found and fixed them, sent off a patch, and Kouhei upstream reimplemented my fix in a better way. Thanks, Peter signature.asc Description: Digital signature

Just my 0.02¢ I think this packages (as it is now) is not suitable for debian anyway and should be removed or re-done with the data of the debian archive (instead of the data of the ubuntu archive). The same utility that is used to extract icons/desktop files in ubuntu could be used for the debian archive. In the gnome-app-install archive there is a util/getMenuData.py script or this. Bug#334697: QA packages with really high popcon numbers :-)
Junichi Uekawa wrote: http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=334697 This bugreport sounds like a joke, really. If the goal isn't to 'not release apt-listbugs with etch', this is going to be bad. How important is apt-listbugs for users of stable? I don't think stable would have a fast changing set of RC bugs or packages. Unfortunately, xcdroast do not recognize wodim as being cdrecord-compatible. in src/io.c, from around line 9980 and the next many lines, xcdroast is doing a cdrecord -version, mkisofs -version, readcd -version and parses the output from all of them. I have tried some to fix it, but I can't get all the way thru, and the last one is also quite ugly. Bug#388116: pan: crashes at startup when launched remotely

Bug#388124: Fwd: findimagedupes will execute code stored in the names of files
Package: findimagedupes Version: 0.1.3-7 Severity: grave findimagedupes will execute code stored in the names of the files. This allows arbitrary code to be executed as the user by anyone who can add files to a directory findimagedupes is run on; hence this is a security hole and is grave. An example: create a file named `touch a` run imagedupes after imagedupes is done, there will be a file named a in the working directory. For a root exploit when findimagedupes is being run as root, change the name of the original file to `mv /home/evil/file /etc/passwd`. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#388132: freej doesn't support image layers
Package: freej Version: 0.8.1-3+b1 Severity: grave Justification: renders package unusable freej can't be used at least with ImageLayer objects created from a .js file. The examples available from the upstream website, in particular pan.js with its picture 1steps063.jpg doesn't work at all.
