Bug#345931: If the problem is that the user doesn't know ...

2006-09-25 Thread Jason Thomas
If stage2 and stage1.5 are correct then most likely stage1 is correct as
well. So would say just checking there version matches grub-shell would
be enough.

On Mon, Sep 25, 2006 at 09:01:02AM +0530, Kapil Hari Paranjape wrote:
Solution 2: (Since stage1 does not change a lot) we can usually
expect that stage1 of an older version will be able to load the
current version of stage2 or stage1.5; so we only check the
version numbers of the latter. However, this has some future risks
built in---when stage1 is actually changed what do we do?

Come on people. I know I've seen this error come up before. Assert is a

The above version of gcalctool was built against gtk-2.10 from

package uninstallable. This problem can most likely been solved by
scheduling binNMUs (given that the build deps don't have to be changed).

If /etc/init.d/rc is a conffile, and it gets modify, I think dpkg

Anyway, I believe that it is better to not edit it, but how? Bootsplash

SL Please try to coordinate with the sysv-rc maintainer to see if support for
SL this can be included in the sysv-rc package in a non-disruptive way.

The patch is not very big, so I believe it should be possible to get

A new version of plone has been released, which fixes link-spamming
attacks in older versions. This is causing quite a serious problem on
 the site I administer.

A backport of the fix to plone 2.0.x has been released, and should be
made available to debian users as a matter of urgency.

 http://plone.org/news/plone-2.5.1-and-2.1.4-released has the details.

I'm working on it, I'll submit the package to the security team as soon
as possible and I'm going to upload 2.5.1 in unstable today.

The very same error used to happen for stlport5. The fix was to add
-lgcc to link the static library that contains those symbols on hppa.
As stlport5 provides a STL replacement it is linked with -nostdlib.

I'll have a look at this tonight, if Twerner has not already fixed
it by then.

Thanks,

Thomas

That's not really a good solution though, as it won't allow using the

there's any mice connected. Longer term, the upcoming X server

Bug#389291: dpkg FTBFS

In libselinux (1.30.28-1), -lpthread was added to the libselinux's

dpkg is statically linked against the SELinux library, thus against the
libpthread, which requires some symbols from libc.

Adding -lc (e.g. in m4/libs.m4) before -lpthread fixes this issue, but I'm
not sure it's the right way.
 i.e. using:
 -lc -Wl,-Bstatic `pkg-config --static --libs libselinux` -Wl,-Bdynamic
 instead of:
 -Wl,-Bstatic `pkg-config --static --libs libselinux` -Wl,-Bdynamic

Could you check if changing -lpthread to -pthread works?

libavc1394-0 has already been rebuilt for the soname change in libraw1394.

gst-plugins-good0.10 will also be binNMUed for this change, but I've
deferred this rebuild for right now so that the current version can get into
testing with the current dbus transition.

So I would ask the maintainers to *not* act on this bug, but instead let it
be taken care of by the autobuilders when the time is right.

The last thing on my system that depends on libdbus-1-2 is banshee, which
unfortunately can't be rebuild for the new dbus as gstreamer0.10-plugins-good
is uninstallable..

Maybe gst-plugins-good0.10 needs a rebuild before the dbus transition afterall?

Package: libwvstreams4.2-extras
Version: 4.2.2-2.1
Severity: grave

Hi,

retchmal is broken on amd64:

[0] [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~ 1j $retchmail -F
A* Retrieve mail from [EMAIL PROTECTED]:995 into cb.
A* Aborted. Error was: Can't get SSL context!

stracing it yields:

4978 write(1, * , 2) = 2
4978 write(1, Retrieve mail from [EMAIL PROTECTED]..., 51) = 51
[...]

This looks like a type problem (4294967295 = 2^32 - 1) in wvstreams. I
had a look at the source but couldn't spot any obvious errors.

Recently having upgraded from sarge/i386 to etch/amd64, not being able
to read -private at the moment could be said to be an advantage, I'd
prefer to be able to read my other mail though :)

I've NMUed for this bug (fixing the bug to use versioning instead of the
fixed tag, to ease tracking through testing); here's the changelog:

  wvstreams (4.2.2-2.2) unstable; urgency=medium
  .
* Non-maintainer upload.
* Add OpenSSL_add_ssl_algorithms() to SSL initializiation, as we're using
the SSL part of OpenSSL and not just the crypto part (which was already

Bug#389361: XSS vulnerability in elog

2006-09-25 Thread Tilman Koschnick
Package: elog
Version: 2.6.1+r1642-1
Severity: grave
Tags: security
Justification: user security hole

Hi,

when editing a log entry in HTML mode, elog accepts arbitrary JavaScript
code. This code will be executed in the browser of other users viewing the
entry (provided they have JavaScript enabled), thus exposing the users
to a XSS (cross site scripting) attack.

To reproduce the problem, add or edit a log entry, switch to HTML mode
and enter the following code snippet:

8--
script type='text/javascript'
!--
  alert(There seems to be the possibility of an XSS attack...);
//--
/script
8--

When viewing the entry, a JavaScript Popup should appear.

To remedy the problem, all script tags should be filtered out (or
better yet, only safe HTML code should be allowed). At the very least,
it should be possible to disable HTML entries (and this should be the
default, with a big warning if someone wants to change it).

Cheers, Til

Bug#383403: Vicam driver appears to contain misappropriated code

2006-09-25 Thread Nathanael Nerode
In the Linux kernel,
drivers/media/video/usbvideo/vicam.c

contains *long* sequences which appear to have been lifted from some other
driver without permission or attribution, probably by wire-sniffing.

Not short sequences, really long ones.

This is not just nondistributable, it's actually likely to be sued over: the

Can't install this package, same deal with libavc1394-0 (not sure if I
should file a bug there as well, please feel free to advise).

libavc1394-0 has already been rebuilt for the soname change in libraw1394.

gst-plugins-good0.10 will also be binNMUed for this change, but I've
deferred this rebuild for right now so that the current version can get into
testing with the current dbus transition.

So I would ask the maintainers to *not* act on this bug, but instead let it
be taken care of by the autobuilders when the time is right.

The last thing on my system that depends on libdbus-1-2 is banshee, which
unfortunately can't be rebuild for the new dbus as gstreamer0.10-plugins-good
 is uninstallable..

banshee has already been kicked out of testing to allow this transition in,
because mono as a whole is now not transitionable.

Maybe gst-plugins-good0.10 needs a rebuild before the dbus transition
 afterall?

No, but it will have one immediately afterwards.

Thanks,

If /etc/init.d/rc is a conffile, and it gets modify, I think dpkg

Yes. Due to the current bug in sysv-rc (that /etc/init.d/rc is not a
conffile), this will not happen at present. But even if it did, it's still
a policy violation for any package to edit a conffile.

Anyway, I believe that it is better to not edit it, but how? Bootsplash

SL Please try to coordinate with the sysv-rc maintainer to see if support

Bug#387783: [Debburn-devel] License of cdrkit - GPLv2 + additional restrictions

2006-09-25 Thread Josselin Mouette
Le dimanche 24 septembre 2006 à 23:32 +0200, Francesco Poli a écrit :
Jörg Schilling interprets this restriction as implied by trademark law
  in his country.

I don't know whether his interpretation is a legally valid one (IANAL),
even though I've heard of cases where courts prevented the attempt to
use an exclusive right (copyright, trademark, ...) to block
 interoperability.
Here, the restriction clearly forbids creating a derivative work that is
a drop-in replacement of the original, and thus interferes with
 interoperability.

It does, but to what extent? AIUI wodim doesn't output this text and can
be a drop-in replacement without a problem.

Replacing the text by a 'this software cannot return
schily because it would infringe on Jörg Schilling's trademark'
notice - or no notice at all - would seem like a fine solution.

Dropping this restriction from cdrkit would be a solution, if a
qualified lawyer confirms that we have the right to do so...

I agree that we need some legal expertise to confirm that. Doesn't
Debian or SPI have access to a lawyer for such cases? What is the
appropriate procedure?

Anyway, let's not split hairs on the validity of Joerg Schilling's
claims: what we are talking about are clearly non-free restrictions (I
hope we can agree on that...) and must thus be solved somehow.

I think the problem is more about GPL-compatibility than about
DFSG-freeness. DFSG #4 already allows licenses forbidding re-use of the
name or version number, and this isn't much a different case here.

Do you think the current patch is ready for wide use?

Bug#389382: libdjvulibre15: screwed up shlibs breaks packages built against this lib

2006-09-25 Thread Steve Langasek
Package: libdjvulibre15
Version: 3.5.17-2
Severity: serious

The current version of libdjvulibre15 now declares this shlibs file:

$ cat /var/lib/dpkg/info/libdjvulibre15.shlibs
libdjvulibre 15 libdjvulibre15 (= ${Source-Version})
$

That's, um, slightly broken. evince on alpha now has an unsatisfiable
dependency on libdjvulibre15 (= 0.4.0-2+b2), because ${Source-Version} isn't
evaluated until binary control file generation.

It also by all rights should be the wrong shlibs value to use *anyway* -- if
libdjvulibre15 is changing its ABI without changing its soname, and these
changes affect packages building against its public headers, then it
shouldn't be a shared library package at all.

Please fix this ASAP, since it's causing misbuilds of other packages in the
archive.

Thanks,

When loading s-utils, the form (defparameter +us-day-names+ ...)
fails to compile because it is wrapped in some excess 'v' and '^'
characters.

A number of other parameters used for date time functions are also
wrapped by these characters.

Diffing utils.lisp from the main repository against the version in the
Debian package shows that this is certainly the case.

I've included a patch for utils.lisp to remove these excess characters.

Additionally, it tries to link with the wrong library - in
ruby1.8-dev, that should be -lruby1.8 instead of -lruby.

But since the ruby stuff is not shipped with the binary package, you
should rather configure with --disable-ruby (and --disable-java, and
all the others).

I've NMUed for this bug (fixing the bug to use versioning instead of the
fixed tag, to ease tracking through testing); here's the changelog:

  graphviz (2.8-2.3) unstable; urgency=medium
  .
* Non-maintainer upload.
* Tell configure not to build language packages we don't distribute; fixes
FTBFS when libruby1.8-dev is installed. (Closes: #388056)

As you will see the coding is independent of any

The *driver* overwrites your xorg.conf?!? Sorry, but I can't believe
that. If 'strings' is correct, no part of the driver does even know
about xorg.conf.

What could in fact do that is /usr/sbin/atieventsd, which was added in
version 8.28. It is started by /etc/init.d/fglrx-driver. Please try
disabling it (rename to /etc/init.d/no.fglrx-driver for example) and let
me know if things change.

Package: octaviz
Version: 0.4.0-27
Severity: important

Could you please migrate to VTK 5 (which recently hit unstable)? What
makes this important is that it is only possible to have one version
installed on a system at a time.

I am attaching a patch that will get you partway there; I gave up
after discovering that the build *still* didn't get very far. :-/
FTR, the next, and with any luck last, issue to address is that
VTK_LEGACY(...) declarations evidently confuse vtkWrapOctave.

[BTW, I also had to add -DVTK_DIR:STRING=/usr/lib/vtk to cmake's
invocation.]

Thanks.

I actually had two init scripts for atieventsd... after looking into it,
I realized that I had not purged the old ATI package, so now I did:

% dpkg -s fglrx-driver | awk '/ obsolete/ {print $1}' | xargs sudo rm

And after the next reboot, all is well! Thanks for mentioning the init
script, I never would have guessed this :)

Since it appears that my original problem is fixed upstream, and you correct
the new upstream behaviour in the second matter, I'll close the bug report.

Thanks for your patience.

I have confirmed the second vector but have not confirmed the first.

The first only applies to modplug, not libmodplug (since libmodplug doesn't
support the ITP format, according to the advisory), so it's irrelevant for
Debian TTBOMK.

The second seems to be easily fixed (just check for 4 signed instead of
unsigned); I'm preparing an NMU now, and I'm quite sure the fix will apply
cleanly to sarge.

The original advisory [1] includes proof-of-concept code [2] to generate
sample ITP and AMF files; cmus (using libmodplug) crashed while playing
 the AMF file.

Note that cmus links statically to libmodplug for some reason, so it will
have to be relinked. I haven't tested it, but at least my patch fixes the
issue for xmms-modplug.

Bug#388571: awstats: Logos policy available on Mozilla's trademark policy

2006-09-25 Thread Marc Fargas
Package: awstats
Followup-For: Bug #388571

Hi there,
The trademark policy on Mozilla's site has something to say:

http://www.mozilla.org/foundation/trademarks/policy.html
=== BEGIN EXCERPT ===
There are two additional broad categories of things you can't do with
Mozilla's logos. The first is to produce modified versions of them. A
modified logo also would raise the possibility of consumer confusion,
thus violating Mozilla's trademarks rights, too (remember the
overarching requirement that any use of a Mozilla trademark be
non-confusing?).
=== END EXCERPT =

I'm not familiar whith the DFSG compatibilities, but the license clearly
says that you can't modify the logo.

There are many things in main with that icon... right now I found
another RC bug with the same issue: #388867 .

don't know if there can be exceptions to that.. you can do a nice bw
placeholder logo and put the firefox icon on non-free :P

Cheers,
Marc

Bug#383403: Vicam driver appears to contain misappropriated code

2006-09-25 Thread Michael Poole
Nathanael Nerode writes:

 In the Linux kernel,
 drivers/media/video/usbvideo/vicam.c

contains *long* sequences which appear to have been lifted from some other
driver without permission or attribution, probably by wire-sniffing.

Not short sequences, really long ones.

This is not just nondistributable, it's actually likely to be sued over: the
company clearly didn't authorize this use.

Do you have any evidence to indicate that these byte streams contain
any copyrightable or otherwise protected content? (It might be what
the U.S. Copyright Act calls a useful article.) Why do you say it
is non-distributable in the first place?

On hppa, bits/mman.h doesn't declare this.

#381294 against libc6-dev is a similar bug for mips (and arm) and indeed
mips and arm are fixed upstream:
http://sources.redhat.com/ml/libc-ports/2006-05/msg5.html

As in fact is hppa:
http://sources.redhat.com/cgi-bin/cvsweb.cgi/~checkout~/ports/sysdeps/unix/sysv/linux/hppa/bits/mman.h?rev=1.6content-type=text/plaincvsroot=glibc

I suspect this is too late to go into glibc for etch though.

I guess we'll have to patch thunar locally to work around this for hppa
which sucks somewhat but hey.

Lamont, any other hppa porters, please chase the libc guys about this.

Simon.
