Bug#393619: varmon: mknod in maintainer script

2006-10-17 Thread Aurelien Jarno
Package: varmon
Version: 1.2.0-1
Severity: serious
Justification: Policy 10.6

Maintainer scripts should not create device files directly. They should
call makedev instead. Refer to Policy Manual, section 10.6 for details.

Bug#358545: libcrystalspace.a failed.

2006-10-17 Thread Jiggly Puff
The compile log that Martin sent is incomplete. There were errors above
that he forgot to include, probably because he didn't notice. Somewhere
up there, it says that libcrystal.a didn't compile, and probably has
hints as to why.

I have compiled crystal space many times (original source, not debian).
I have noticed that the best way to capture the errors are to route
stdout to a file.

Congratulations to the maintainer on getting crystal space to compile.
It isn't an easy feat to accomplish. Or, rather, compiling in such a way
as to get the test apps to run is a feat. And to package it into a valid
.deb as well. Huge congrats.

Bug#392785: Zope-book (Was: Rebuilding all etch packages inside etch)

2006-10-17 Thread Andreas Tille

On Mon, 16 Oct 2006, Igor Stroh wrote:

... the stable upstream version of
zope-book is a reference for the ancient zope 2.6 and the
zope-book for zope 2.7 is still beeing worked on.
So, to be honest, I've lost interest in zope-book packaging
altogether and would recommend to remove it from Debian,
since it's almost outdated now.
...
and certainly will be not of much use when zope2.10
will become the default zope version, the only useful
part of it is probably the TAL reference

I personally came to the same conclusion. Anybody out there who
wants to keep zope-book in Debian?

Kind regards

Bug#392990:

2006-10-17 Thread Santiago Ruano Rincón
It seems to be a linux kernel 2.6.18-2 bug, it's not present when
building the modules with a 2.6.16.

modules_install Makefile rule runs a DEPMOD 2.6.18

maybe that the reason.

The package *must* have a changelog and a copyright file. See policy
 12.5 and 12.7

This is an empty transitional package. In common with many other
transitional packages, it contains nothing whatsoever except the
required control files. It will disappear in etch+1. If the RMs
think this is release critical, I'll fix it, otherwise I won't.

Ouch, that was caused by my upload of the new libjaxen-java. I will upload a

The problem is that the call to mknod is not creating a device,
it is creating a fifo, which is not an operation created by makedev.

I'm not sure what the best fix, if any, is for this. When I asked
around a very long time ago, I was advised to just leave the call
to mknod inside the maintainer script.

Indeed, this is out of scope for makedev. While it may be debatable whether
these fifos should be created under /dev at all, that doesn't fall under
provision 10.6 of policy.

Cheers,

Maintainer scripts should not create device files directly. They should
call makedev instead. Refer to Policy Manual, section 10.6 for details.

From the BTS reference:

serious
is a severe violation of Debian policy (roughly, it violates a
must or required directive), or, in the package maintainer's
opinion, makes the package unsuitable for release.

Obviously a should it is not a must nor a required.
Also this bug doesn't make the package unsuitable for release.
Therefor I'm lowering the severity to normal.
Thanks for reporting this bug, we'll try to fix it as soon as we can.

Looking at the build log, the aa target is disabled at configure time:

Bug#393030: FTBFS: unable to load shared library '/usr/lib/R/site-library/fSeries/libs/fSeries.so'

That's the one then as I had

 libgfortran.so.0 = /usr/lib/libgfortran.so.0 (0xb747f000)

How could that have slipped? Whose shlibs file do we need to look at?

The first problem is:

 Package: r-cran-fseries
 Architecture: any
 Depends: r-base-core (= 2.3.0), r-cran-fbasics (= 201.10059),
r-cran-fcalendar, r-cran-mgcv (= 1.1.5), r-cran-vr (= 7.2.8)

You aren't using the shlibs:Depends substitution in your debian/control
file, so *all* shared library dependencies are missing for the package!

There is a potential collateral problem with having different packages built
against multiple versions of libgfortran because libgfortran doesn't use
versioned symbols, but that's a rather general problem in the archive today
and doesn't have nearly the same priority as getting these packages'
dependencies fixed.

Ah, no. The new (-core obviously at your reporting time not installed by
you although it at that time was already available for ppc) has the
necessary Depends but 2.0.4-1's -common needs to Conflict against
2.0.4~rc3-1's -core. WIll do that in the next upload.

please consider applying that simple workaround,I would be terribly

if I see no answer about that soon, I'll probably NMU lighttpd with that

Bug#393636: gnat-gps appears to be completely unusable...

2006-10-17 Thread Kevin Brown
Package: gnat-gps
Version: 3.1.3-2
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

Note that I am using the amd64 version, so that may be relevant here. I
haven't tried using the i386 version.

Basically, it seems that gnat-gps is completely unusable. If I open an
existing project (hello.gpr), it acts as if it didn't open anything, and
a second attempt to open the project (or, indeed, to open any file at
all) throws this error:

raised STORAGE_ERROR : s-intman.adb:158 explicit raise

The above also occurs when I tell it to start with a default project in
any directory and then attempt to open a file.

If I attempt to create a new standalone project with the wizard, gnat-gps
goes into an infinite loop and appears to never come out of it.

The bottom line is that, at least on the amd64 platform, gnat-gps
appears to be completely unusable.

I'll be happy to help debug this however I can, but keep in mind that
I'm rather new to Ada (it's been 15 years or so since I've done anything
with it, and that was only a college course at that).

Works fine here. What value were you trying to set the default
 resolution to?

Further analysis shows that the
/etc/Xprint/C/print/attributes/document was corrupted (it ended with a
few hundreds of null characters), which led the extract current
default resolution from that file logic in the postinst to be
confused (grep returned binary file
/etc/Xprint/C/print/attributes/document matches instead of
*default-printer-resolution: 600, result which contains /
characters and was inserted in a sed s/// command, hence ruining it.

Closing bug, as it is not a bug in the package, but corruption on the
local machine.

Bug#364749: new pgf upstream fixing license problems, nmu prepared

2006-10-17 Thread Norbert Preining
Dear Ohura-san!

Till prepared a new upstream version for pgf which fixes the license
problems and gives complete statements on the license of each file.

Furthemore it fixes the open bug about the wrong pointing arrows.

I took the liberty to prepare a nmu. The changlog gives:
 pgf (1.09-0.1) unstable; urgency=medium
 .
   * NMU
   * new upstream release clearing up license incompatibilities and
fixes the wrong arrow bug (Closes: #343875)
   * include complete license information in copyright file (Closes: #364749)
   * install context support for pgf
   * do not install html version of document as it is not prebuild

I set urgency to medium as this is an RC bug present in etch, even if it
has an etch-ignore tag.

The source and binary packages can be found at
deb http://www.tug.org/texlive/Debian/ check/
deb-src http://www.tug.org/texlive/Debian/ check/

Furthermore, I include AND attach a diff between the two debian
directories and give some comments:

Best wishes

Norbert

NMU changelog entry, nothing special. As I said, urgency=medium due to
RC bug.

Bug#354622: Using Firefox as the app name without official branding

2006-10-17 Thread Nathanael Nerode
[EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:
Since there's no way of making the logo free without losing control over
the mark,

FYI, we believe you are wrong about this.

Quoting Eric Dorland:
 split the license on
the logo to have a DSFG-free copyright license and the same,
 restrictive trademark license.

This is essentially the planned route Debian is taking for its logo (the bug
fix here
is taking a disturbingly long time, but hopefully it will happen soon). There
appears
to be no legal obstacle to this route (if you have legal advice to the contrary,
please share with debian-legal). It appears that aggressive enforcement of
trademarks
for their intended purpose, namely clearly identifying the origin and identity
of a
product, is entirely DFSG-compatible (note the DFSG clause which specifies that
name
change requirements are OK). Restrictions which go beyond the original
function of
trademarks are generally not DFSG-free, but are also unnecessary for trademark
defense.

This is just an FYI matter, as it is really quite off the main topic of the bug.

Severity: serious
Justification: Policy 2.2.1 -- DFSG issue

In the upload of 1.5a57-1, the license was changed from GPL to CDDL
(with choice of venue being Berlin, Germany). The acceptance of this
license by Debian is still undecided [1] (at least to the best of my
knowledge).

However, forcing a german jurisdiction upon everyone installing this
package without warning seems incacceptable to me for a package in main.

Hi,

The CDDL mightn't be the best license in the world, and isn't GPL compatible,
but it's still DFSG-free. Closing this bug with this message.

Bug#393653: apt-get update loops, infinite download of the same .pdiff files

2006-10-17 Thread Helge Hafting
Package: apt
Version: 0.6.46
Severity: critical
Tags: security
Justification: breaks unrelated software

Feel free to change severity as fit - critical is the highest
but being unable to upgrade or install packages breaks
the whole system as it gets more and more outdated
with time. And of course I don't get security
updates this way either.

apt-get update seems to not terminate at all.
It produces output like this:

Get:36 2006-10-14-1418.40.pdiff [30.0kB]
Get:37 2006-10-14-1418.40.pdiff [30.0kB]

Get:42 2006-10-11-1350.40.pdiff [36.1kB]
Get:43 2006-10-11-1350.40.pdiff [36.1kB]
Get:44 2006-10-13-1359.55.pdiff [807B]
Get:45 2006-10-12-1433.11.pdiff [598B]
Get:46 2006-10-12-1433.11.pdiff [598B]
Get:47 2006-10-06-1339.35.pdiff [4878B]
Get:48 2006-10-14-1418.40.pdiff [1417B]
Get:49 2006-10-14-1418.40.pdiff [1417B]

Here 2006-10-14-1418.40.pdiff seems to repeat over and over.
Several other names do too - this never stops. apt-get
forever remains at 99% Packages rred.

Theoretically, this might terminate someday. But something is
definitely wrong when update takes *much* more time
than the weekly dist-upgrade takes.

Installing single packages with apt-get still works sometimes,
but this too becomes impossible as the packages referenced from
my outdated package database no longer exists in the pool.

I can't upgrade to the newer apt for example, because
it isn't in the database and update fails. dist-upgrade
also fail trying to fetch outdated packages.

So I am stuck. Of course, this is the price of using
testing+unstable. I'll try downloading the newest apt
package manually and install it using dpkg.

This version of apt is dangerous in that it
1) Gets itself stuck
2) It becomes a ddos attack on the debian servers, if many users starts
unattended apt-get update and keep downloading forever.
   apt-get is indeed slow today . . .

Hi,

the mainline kernel contains version 1.64 of the ov511 driver only.
Therefore I think, that the package is not obsolete.

Cheers, Mario

Package: apg
Version: 2.2.3-4
Severity: serious

Hi!

This bug has been filed on multiple packages, and general discussions
are kindly requested to take place on debian-legal or debian-devel in
the thread with Subject: Non-free IETF RFC/I-Ds in source packages.

It seems this source package contains the following files from the
IETF under non-free license terms:

apg-2.2.3/doc/rfc0972.txt
apg-2.2.3/doc/rfc1750.txt

The license on RFC/I-Ds is not DFSG-free, see:
 * http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=199810
 * http://release.debian.org/removing-non-free-documentation
 * http://wiki.debian.org/NonFreeIETFDocuments

The etch release policy says binary and source packages must each be free:
 * http://release.debian.org/etch_rc_policy.txt

The severity is serious, because this violates the Debian policy:
 * http://www.debian.org/doc/debian-policy/ch-archive.html#s-dfsg

There are (at least) three ways to fix this problem. In order of
preference:

1. Ask the author of the RFC to re-license the RFC under a free
license. A template for this e-mail request can be found at
   http://wiki.debian.org/NonFreeIETFDocuments

2. Remove the non-free material from the source, e.g., by re-packaging
the upstream archive and adding a 'dfsg' version name to it.

3. Move the package to non-free.

I went over many packages looking for names of likely non-free files,
and there may be false positives. If this is the case for your
package, I'm sorry for the noise. I'll modify the scripts to take
into account false positives when I learn of them, and publish the
list of exceptions under Known exceptions at
http://wiki.debian.org/NonFreeIETFDocuments.

Thanks,
Simon

Bug#316180: Preliminary diagnosis

2006-10-17 Thread Rodrigo Tadeu Claro

Daniel Burrows disse:
On Sun, Oct 15, 2006 at 09:14:05PM -0700, Daniel Burrows
[EMAIL PROTECTED] was heard to say:
   (d) The graph buffer remains initialized until a function called
rawmode_init() is invoked. rawmode_init() has no documentation,
does not exist in any header in /usr/include, and turns up nothing
useful on Google, except that it looks like it has something to
do with the keyboard (maybe it's supposed to put the terminal
into raw mode?). In particular, I can't see why calling it
should scribble on the program's memory.

Doh, it looks like luxman has its own raw-keyboard library that I
somehow missed while hacking late at night (in rawkey/) and that doesn't
have debugging symbols in my current build. Probably the explanation
of what's going on is buried there.

OK. That was my mistake then. I thought that we still had symbol

Concerning the pictures: Indeed, the Apple logo has been downloaded

replace it by something else in the new release.

Can you tell us how near this new release realistically is? If
 it's not
going to be soon, Debian is getting a problem, because our release is
near. As a workaround, it would help very much if we had replacement
code for the part of the documentation where the apple logo is used.
You know, if we don't have the right to use and distribute the
 logo, we
probably also can't distribute the PDF file which embeds it. Thus,
separating this out, or rather replacing it by something new would

Dear Frank,

a new release of pgf will be finished by the end of this week, I'm
working on it currently and only copying the corrent legal notices to
the right places still needs to be done.

However, I'll have a version 1.09 out and most likely will have to
fix a few things in this because of user feedback before a stabel
version 1.10 is out a few weeks later.

I won't release a new beamer version at the same time. There,
however, the only troublesome stuff is in the examples directory. By
simply omitting the images in this directory and also the
resulting .pdf, everythings should be fine (I hope). A new version of
beamer will the fix the examples directory permanently.

Bug#393673: amiwm: FTBFS: Build-Depends dependency for amiwm cannot be satisfied because the package libxpm4-dev cannot be found

2006-10-17 Thread Andreas Jochens
Package: amiwm
Version: 0.20.48-7
Severity: serious
Tags: patch

When building 'amiwm' in a clean unstable chroot,
I get the following error:

dpkg-source: extracting amiwm in amiwm-0.20.48
dpkg-source: unpacking amiwm_0.20.48.orig.tar.gz

Reading package lists...
Building dependency tree...
E: Build-Depends dependency for amiwm cannot be satisfied because the package
libxpm4-dev cannot be found

With the attached patch 'amiwm' can be built on unstable.

The patch replaces the Build-Depends on libxpm4-dev with libxpm-dev
and adds the missing Build-Depends on libxmu-dev.

Andreas Jochens

Bug#393014: FTBFS: Ruby/GTK couldn't be initialized ('Cannot open display: ')

2006-10-17 Thread Roan Kattouw
checking for gtk+-2.0... Ruby/GTK couldn't be initialized ('Cannot
open display: ')

Make sure that:
- you actually had an X server running during the build;
- the $DISPLAY environment variable was set correctly;
- you were building as the same user who was logged owned the X session,
and not as root or someone else.

I often get Cannot open display errors when trying to run X programs
from within a shell, and the problem usually is that I'm working as
root. Apparently X (or at least my X server) is so strict that it
doesn't even allow root to start programs on other users' displays...

HTH,

Roan Kattouw

Can't create config directory (/nonexistent/.w3m)!./buildone.sh: line

I'm not really sure if it's w3m which segfault..

Yes, it really is w3m. We've seen this same problem in stable. Apparently
w3m does not like it when it cannot create a config dir in chroots, as
evidenced by Can't create config directory /nonexistent/.w3m.

Hi,

Am Montag, 16. Oktober 2006 17:20 schrieb Daniel Serpell:

huh? It doesn't cause data loss since OOo would restore
the document next time, does it?

Anyway...

 To reproduce:

 * Open Openoffice writer.
 * Copy some text (can be a word).
 * Paste the text to a new email window in evolution.

Can't reproduce this. Works fine here. (Current sid, i386)

Openoffice crashes inmediatly, and no text is pasted.

Which program are ou talking about anyway?
There's no Openoffice in sid *scnr*. (It's OpenOffice.org)

Bug#393662: proftpd wouldn't start; Permisson denied

2006-10-17 Thread Modestas Vainius
Package: proftpd
Version: 1.3.0-10
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

proftpd refuses to start with the following message:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ sudo invoke-rc.d proftpd restart

'mod_ldap.c': Permission denied on line 18 of '/etc/proftpd/modules.conf'

invoke-rc.d: initscript proftpd, action restart failed.

If I comment out mod_ldap.c in /etc/proftpd/modules.conf, the same
happens with mod_sql_mysql.c I've not tested further, but I guess it's
same with all modules.

Downgrading to 1.3.0-9.1 solves the problem.

Bug#393636: gnat-gps appears to be completely unusable...

2006-10-17 Thread Ludovic Brenta
Hi Kevin,

Your help will be definitely appreciated.

At first, I wanted to replace GPS 2.1.0 with the newest version, 4.0.0.
I had some trouble compiling it but finally succeeded and found that it
would crash with a Storage_Error whenever opening a project, or any file
for that matter. I was unable to fix that, but I did make sure the
problem was neither in GtkAda 2.8.1 nor in the compiler (tried -O0). So
I reverted to GPS 3.1.3, and I had to patch it so it would compile with
GtkAda 2.8.1. That's what is now in unstable. It starts and it can
read files and the options dialogue boxes work, but I too have had some
crashes. I tried to debug but family problems at home made that
impossible. So, your help will be appreciated, definitely.

The crashes I experienced were due to explicit raises, not
Storage_Error. And I did not see the infinite loop you report, either.

As I said, many parts of GPS do work, but if you can't edit project
properties (as in my experience), the thing is pretty much useless, so I
agree that the bug is grave.

GPS consists of ~280.000 lines of code, not counting blank or comment
lines, and not counting GtkAda which is itself another 90.000 lines.
Luckily, the source is very clear and well commented.

If you would like to help debug GPS, please start by downloading the
source package and editing the top-level gps.gpr file. Look for
package Builder, and add -g to the Default_Switches (Ada) line, e.g.

package Builder is
   for Default_Switches (Ada) use (-g, ...);
end Builder;

then do debian/rules gnat-gps. After a long time (3h40 on my old
laptop but only 48 minutes on an AMD64 buildd) you will end up with a
large file called gnat-gps, containing debugging information. You can
run that under gdb or (better) gnatgdb from the package gnat-gdb. The
latter allows you to break on exceptions (break exception), so you can
see where the Storage_Error is being raised.

You may also want to try removing all compiler options; maybe the
compiler is emitting wrong code or something. In particular, I usually
compile with -gnato (full range checks, so we could get a
Constraint_Error) and -gnatVa (full optional run-time checks, which can
raise various exceptions). If you remove these options, you'll stand a
lesser chance of getting exceptions and a higher chance of getting
random memory corruption and segfaults :/

I keep my compiler scripts and patches in a Monotone database which is
available for anonymous access; please tell me if you're interested.

Closing the (6th, I think) bug against this, f-spot is being pushed into
testing as hard as possible, the issue is fixed in unstable.

Bug#393579: zephyr: FTBFS: Package libxaw8-dev has no installation candidate

2006-10-17 Thread Andreas Jochens
tags 393579 + patch
thanks

Hello,

with the attached patch 'zephyr' can be built on unstable.

The patch changes the alternative Build-Depends on
'libxaw8-dev | libxaw7-dev' to 'libxaw7-dev' (libxaw8-dev
has been removed from unstable a while ago).

Regards
Andreas Jochens
