Bug#393619: varmon: mknod in maintainer script
Package: varmon Version: 1.2.0-1 Severity: serious Justification: Policy 10.6 Maintainer scripts should not create device files directly. They should call makedev instead. Bug#358545: libcrystalspace.a failed.
The compile log that Martin sent is incomplete. There were errors above that he forgot to include, probably because he didn't notice. Somewhere up there, it says that libcrystal.a didn't compile, and probably has hints as to why. I have compiled crystal space many times (original source, not debian). I have noticed that the best way to capture the errors are to route stdout to a file. Congratulations to the maintainer on getting crystal space to compile. It isn't an easy feat to accomplish. Or, rather, compiling in such a way as to get the test apps to run is a feat. And to package it into a valid .deb as well. Huge congrats. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

The problem is that the call to mknod is not creating a device, it is creating a fifo, which is not an operation created by makedev. I'm not sure what the best fix, if any, is for this. When I asked around a very long time ago, I was advised to just leave the call to mknod inside the maintainer script. Indeed, this is out of scope for makedev. While it may be debatable whether these fifos should be created under /dev at all, that doesn't fall under provision 10.6 of policy. From the BTS reference: serious is a severe violation of Debian policy (roughly, it violates a must or required directive), or, in the package maintainer's opinion, makes the package unsuitable for release. Obviously a should it is not a must nor a required. Also this bug doesn't make the package unsuitable for release. Therefor I'm lowering the severity to normal. Thanks for reporting this bug, we'll try to fix it as soon as we can. Regards, Héctor

Bug#393030: FTBFS: unable to load shared library '/usr/lib/R/site-library/fSeries/libs/fSeries.so'

Whose shlibs file do we need to look at? The first problem is: Package: r-cran-fseries Architecture: any Depends: r-base-core (= 2.3.0), r-cran-fbasics (= 201.10059), r-cran-fcalendar, r-cran-mgcv (= 1.1.5), r-cran-vr (= 7.2.8) You aren't using the shlibs:Depends substitution in your debian/control file, so *all* shared library dependencies are missing for the package! There is a potential collateral problem with having different packages built against multiple versions of libgfortran because libgfortran doesn't use versioned symbols, but that's a rather general problem in the archive today and doesn't have nearly the same priority as getting these packages' dependencies fixed. Bug#393636: gnat-gps appears to be completely unusable...
Package: gnat-gps Version: 3.1.3-2 Severity: grave Justification: renders package unusable Note that I am using the amd64 version, so that may be relevant here. I haven't tried using the i386 version. Basically, it seems that gnat-gps is completely unusable. If I open an existing project (hello.gpr), it acts as if it didn't open anything, and a second attempt to open the project (or, indeed, to open any file at all) throws this error: raised STORAGE_ERROR : s-intman.adb:158 explicit raise The above also occurs when I tell it to start with a default project in any directory and then attempt to open a file. If I attempt to create a new standalone project with the wizard, gnat-gps goes into an infinite loop and appears to never come out of it. The bottom line is that, at least on the amd64 platform, gnat-gps appears to be completely unusable. I'll be happy to help debug this however I can, but keep in mind that I'm rather new to Ada (it's been 15 years or so since I've done anything with it, and that was only a college course at that). -- System Information: Debian Release: testing/unstable APT prefers testing APT policy: (990, 'testing'), (500, 'unstable') Architecture: amd64 (x86_64) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Kernel: Linux 2.6.16-2-amd64-generic Locale: LANG=C, LC_CTYPE=C (charmap=ANSI_X3.4-1968) Versions of packages gnat-gps depends on: ii libc62.3.6.ds1-4 GNU C Library: Shared libraries ii libgcc1 1:4.1.1-13 GCC support library ii libglib2.0-0 2.12.3-2The GLib library of C routines ii libgnat-4.1 4.1.1-15Runtime library for GNU Ada applic ii libgnatprj4.14.1.1-15GNU Ada Project Manager ii libgnatvsn4.14.1.1-15GNU Ada compiler version library ii libgtk2.0-0 2.8.20-1The GTK+ graphical user interface ii libgtkada-2.82.8.1-4 Ada binding for the GTK library ii libpango1.0-01.14.5-1Layout and rendering of internatio ii libtemplates-parser1010.0+20060522-4 Ada library to parse files and rep ii python2.42.4.3-8 An interactive high-level object-o ii tcl8.4 8.4.12-1.1 Tcl (the Tool Command Language) v8 Versions of packages gnat-gps recommends: ii ada-reference-m 20021112web-3The standard describing the Ada 95 ii gnat4.1.1-11 The GNU Ada compiler ii gnat-gdb5.3.gnat.0.0.20030225-12 Ada-aware version of GDB pn gnat-gps-docnone (no description available) -- no debconf information -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#364749: new pgf upstream fixing license problems, nmu prepared
Dear Ohura-san! Till prepared a new upstream version for pgf which fixes the license problems and gives complete statements on the license of each file. Furthemore it fixes the open bug about the wrong pointing arrows. I took the liberty to prepare a nmu. The changlog gives: pgf (1.09-0.1) unstable; urgency=medium . * NMU * new upstream release clearing up license incompatibilities and fixes the wrong arrow bug (Closes: #343875) * include complete license information in copyright file (Closes: #364749) * install context support for pgf * do not install html version of document as it is not prebuild I set urgency to medium as this is an RC bug present in etch, even if it has an etch-ignore tag. The source and binary packages can be found at deb http://www.tug.org/texlive/Debian/ check/ deb-src http://www.tug.org/texlive/Debian/ check/ Furthermore, I include AND attach a diff between the two debian directories and give some comments: Best wishes Norbert NMU changelog entry, nothing special. Bug#354622: Using Firefox as the app name without official branding
[EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Since there's no way of making the logo free without losing control over the mark, FYI, we believe you are wrong about this. Quoting Eric Dorland: split the license on the logo to have a DSFG-free copyright license and the same, restrictive trademark license. This is essentially the planned route Debian is taking for its logo (the bug fix here is taking a disturbingly long time, but hopefully it will happen soon). There appears to be no legal obstacle to this route (if you have legal advice to the contrary, please share with debian-legal). It appears that aggressive enforcement of trademarks for their intended purpose, namely clearly identifying the origin and identity of a product, is entirely DFSG-compatible (note the DFSG clause which specifies that name change requirements are OK). Restrictions which go beyond the original function of trademarks are generally not DFSG-free, but are also unnecessary for trademark defense. This is just an FYI matter, as it is really quite off the main topic of the bug. -- Nathanael Nerode [EMAIL PROTECTED] A thousand reasons. http://www.thousandreasons.org/ Lies, theft, war, kidnapping, torture, rape, murder... Bug#393653: apt-get update loops, infinite download of the same .pdiff files
Package: apt Version: 0.6.46 Severity: critical Tags: security Justification: breaks unrelated software Feel free to change severity as fit - critical is the highest but being unable to upgrade or install packages breaks the whole system as it gets more and more outdated with time. And of course I don't get security updates this way either. apt-get update seems to not terminate at all. It produces output like this: Get:36 2006-10-14-1418.40.pdiff [30.0kB] Get:37 2006-10-14-1418.40.pdiff [30.0kB] Get:38 2006-10-10-1317.34.pdiff [80.8kB] Get:39 2006-10-16-1354.47.pdiff [1160B] Get:40 2006-10-16-1354.47.pdiff [1160B] Get:41 2006-10-11-1350.40.pdiff [360B] Get:42 2006-10-11-1350.40.pdiff [36.1kB] Get:43 2006-10-11-1350.40.pdiff [36.1kB] Get:44 2006-10-13-1359.55.pdiff [807B] Get:45 2006-10-12-1433.11.pdiff [598B] Get:46 2006-10-12-1433.11.pdiff [598B] Get:47 2006-10-06-1339.35.pdiff [4878B] Get:48 2006-10-14-1418.40.pdiff [1417B] Get:49 2006-10-14-1418.40.pdiff [1417B] Here 2006-10-14-1418.40.pdiff seems to repeat over and over. Several other names do too - this never stops. apt-get forever remains at 99% Packages rred. Theoretically, this might terminate someday. But something is definitely wrong when update takes *much* more time than the weekly dist-upgrade takes. Installing single packages with apt-get still works sometimes, but this too becomes impossible as the packages referenced from my outdated package database no longer exists in the pool. I can't upgrade to the newer apt for example, because it isn't in the database and update fails. dist-upgrade also fail trying to fetch outdated packages. So I am stuck. Of course, this is the price of using testing+unstable. I'll try downloading the newest apt package manually and install it using dpkg. This version of apt is dangerous in that it 1) Gets itself stuck 2) It becomes a ddos attack on the debian servers, if many users starts unattended apt-get update and keep downloading forever. apt-get is indeed slow today . . . -- Package-specific info: -- (/etc/apt/preferences present, but not submitted) -- Pasted in manually, as reporbug crashes with some kind of unicode error when I let it include files itself: Package:* Pin: release a=stable Pin-Priority:800 Package: * Pin: release a=testing Pin-Priority: 900 Package: * Pin: release a=unstable Pin-Priority: 800 Package: * Pin: release a=experimental Pin-Priority: 700 Package: * Pin: release o=Debian Pin-Priority: -10 -- (/etc/apt/sources.list present, but not submitted) -- Included manually, as reportbug otherwise crashes: #testing=etch #unstable=sid #stable=sarge deb-src ftp://ftp.debian.org/debian testing main contrib non-free deb-src ftp://ftp.debian.org/debian stable main contrib non-free deb-src ftp://ftp.debian.org/debian unstable main contrib non-free #Sikkerhetsoppdateringer deb http://security.debian.org/ sarge/updates main contrib non-free # Stable: deb ftp://ftp.fi.debian.org/pub/debian stable main contrib non-free #Testing: deb ftp://ftp.fi.debian.org/pub/debian testing main contrib non-free #deb ftp://ftp.fi.debian.org/pub/debian-non-US testing/non-US main contrib non-f ree #Unstable deb ftp://ftp.fi.debian.org/pub/debian unstable main contrib non-free #Experimental deb http://ftp.fi.debian.org/debian/ ../project/experimental main #Andre som ogsE5 distribuerer .deb-filer: #initng deb http://debian.space-based.de/debs/ experimental main #deb ftp://ftp.uninett.no/pub/linux/packages/openoffice-debian testing main cont rib deb http://developer.skulelinux.no/~gautehk/ooo-deb ./ deb http://security.debian.org/ stable/updates main #djbdns binE6rpakker deb http://smarden.org/pape/Debian sarge unofficial #mozilla thunderbird prerelease deb http://people.debian.org/~asac/testing ./ #26/9 2004 DRI X #See http://www.nixnuts.net/files/README.txt deb http://www.nixnuts.net/files/ ./ deb-src http://www.nixnuts.net/files/ ./ #libdvdcss deb http://download.videolan.org/pub/videolan/debian sid main -- System Information: Debian Release: testing/unstable APT prefers testing APT policy: (900, 'testing'), (800, 'unstable'), (800, 'stable'), (700, 'experimental') Architecture: i386 (i686) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Kernel: Linux 2.6.19-rc1 Locale: LANG=C, LC_CTYPE=C (charmap=ANSI_X3.4-1968) Versions of packages apt depends on: ii libc62.3.6.ds1-4 GNU C Library: Shared libraries ii libgcc1 1:4.1.1-13 GCC support library ii libstdc++6 4.1.1-13The GNU Standard C++ Library v3 Versions of packages apt recommends: pn debian-archive-keyringnone (no description available) -- debconf-show failed -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#393356: marked as done (Source package contains non-free IETF RFC/I-D's)
Your message dated Tue, 17 Oct 2006 03:32:23 -0700 with message-id [EMAIL PROTECTED] and subject line Bug#393356: fixed in apg 2.2.3.dfsg.1-1 has caused the attached Bug report to be marked as done. This means that you claim that the problem has been dealt with. If this is not the case it is now your responsibility to reopen the Bug report if necessary, and/or fix the problem forthwith. (NB: If you are a system administrator and have no idea what I am talking about this indicates a serious mail system misconfiguration somewhere. Please contact me immediately.) Debian bug tracking system administrator (administrator, Debian Bugs database) ---BeginMessage--- Package: apg Version: 2.2.3-4 Severity: serious Hi! This bug has been filed on multiple packages, and general discussions are kindly requested to take place on debian-legal or debian-devel in the thread with Subject: Non-free IETF RFC/I-Ds in source packages. It seems this source package contains the following files from the IETF under non-free license terms: apg-2.2.3/doc/rfc0972.txt apg-2.2.3/doc/rfc1750.txt The license on RFC/I-Ds is not DFSG-free, see: * http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=199810 * http://release.debian.org/removing-non-free-documentation * http://wiki.debian.org/NonFreeIETFDocuments The etch release policy says binary and source packages must each be free: * http://release.debian.org/etch_rc_policy.txt The severity is serious, because this violates the Debian policy: * http://www.debian.org/doc/debian-policy/ch-archive.html#s-dfsg There are (at least) three ways to fix this problem. In order of preference: 1. Ask the author of the RFC to re-license the RFC under a free license. A template for this e-mail request can be found at http://wiki.debian.org/NonFreeIETFDocuments 2. Remove the non-free material from the source, e.g., by re-packaging the upstream archive and adding a 'dfsg' version name to it. 3. Move the package to non-free. I went over many packages looking for names of likely non-free files, and there may be false positives. If this is the case for your package, I'm sorry for the noise. I'll modify the scripts to take into account false positives when I learn of them, and publish the list of exceptions under Known exceptions at http://wiki.debian.org/NonFreeIETFDocuments. Bug#316180: Preliminary diagnosis
Daniel Burrows disse: On Sun, Oct 15, 2006 at 09:14:05PM -0700, Daniel Burrows [EMAIL PROTECTED] was heard to say: (d) The graph buffer remains initialized until a function called rawmode_init() is invoked. rawmode_init() has no documentation, does not exist in any header in /usr/include, and turns up nothing useful on Google, except that it looks like it has something to do with the keyboard (maybe it's supposed to put the terminal into raw mode?). In particular, I can't see why calling it should scribble on the program's memory. Doh, it looks like luxman has its own raw-keyboard library that I somehow missed while hacking late at night (in rawkey/) and that doesn't have debugging symbols in my current build. Probably the explanation of what's going on is buried there. Daniel Thank you Daniel, I was very busy. I intent go on with this package. Liked you the to be co-maintainer this package? So that's a bug in cyrus-sasl2 only... OK. That was my mistake then. I thought that we still had symbol versioning in there, which both you and Fabian have clarified that we do not. I apologize for the confusion. Regards, -Roberto -- Roberto C. Sanchez http://people.connexer.com/~roberto http://www.connexer.com signature.asc Description: Digital signature
Bug#364749: [Till Tantau] Re: Lizenz-Kleinigkeiten bei beamer und pgf
This was sent to me privately. Sorry that I forgot to forward it. ---BeginMessage--- Am 10.10.2006 um 17:02 schrieb Frank Küster: Dear Till, Till Tantau [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Here is what I will do: I am currently preparing a new release of pgf and presumably also of beamer and intend to have this release ready before the new semester, that is, by mid October. In this release I will make sure that the license stuff is correct, that is, the licening is consistent and correct. Concerning the pictures: Indeed, the Apple logo has been downloaded from the Apple website as, thus, should not be used. I'll try to replace it by something else in the new release. Can you tell us how near this new release realistically is? If it's not going to be soon, Debian is getting a problem, because our release is near. As a workaround, it would help very much if we had replacement code for the part of the documentation where the apple logo is used. You know, if we don't have the right to use and distribute the logo, we probably also can't distribute the PDF file which embeds it. Thus, separating this out, or rather replacing it by something new would help very much. Vielen Dank im Voraus, Frank -- Dr. Frank Küster Single Molecule Spectroscopy, Protein Folding @ Inst. f. Biochemie, Univ. Zürich Debian Developer (teTeX/TeXLive) Dear Frank, a new release of pgf will be finished by the end of this week, I'm working on it currently and only copying the corrent legal notices to the right places still needs to be done. However, I'll have a version 1.09 out and most likely will have to fix a few things in this because of user feedback before a stabel version 1.10 is out a few weeks later. I won't release a new beamer version at the same time. There, however, the only troublesome stuff is in the examples directory. By simply omitting the images in this directory and also the resulting .pdf, everythings should be fine (I hope). A new version of beamer will the fix the examples directory permanently. Bug#393668: circlepack: FTBFS: depends on xviewg-dev, which is not available on amd64
Package: circlepack Version: 5.1-3 Severity: serious Justification: FTBFS Hi, During a rebuilt of all packages in etch, I discovered that your package failed to build on AMD64. Your package depends on xviewg-dev, which is not available on amd64. I'm not sure if it is missing for a good reason (FTBFS) or not. The full build log is available from http://ox.blop.info/bazaar/buildlogs/20061016/amd64/circlepack_5.1-3.buildlog About the archive rebuilt: The rebuilt was done on about 40 AMD64 nodes of the Grid'5000 platform, using a chroot containing an etch environment (not unstable). Internet was not accessible from the build nodes. About Grid'5000: The Grid'5000 project aims at building a highly reconfigurable experimental Grid platform gathering 9 sites and featuring a total of 5000 CPUs. Its main purpose is to serve as an experimental testbed for research in Grid Computing. Bug#393014: FTBFS: Ruby/GTK couldn't be initialized ('Cannot open display: ')
checking for gtk+-2.0... Ruby/GTK couldn't be initialized ('Cannot open display: ') Make sure that: - you actually had an X server running during the build; - the $DISPLAY environment variable was set correctly; - you were building as the same user who was logged owned the X session, and not as root or someone else. I often get Cannot open display errors when trying to run X programs from within a shell, and the problem usually is that I'm working as root. Apparently X (or at least my X server) is so strict that it doesn't even allow root to start programs on other users' displays... Bug#393636: gnat-gps appears to be completely unusable...
Hi Kevin, Your help will be definitely appreciated. At first, I wanted to replace GPS 2.1.0 with the newest version, 4.0.0. I had some trouble compiling it but finally succeeded and found that it would crash with a Storage_Error whenever opening a project, or any file for that matter. I was unable to fix that, but I did make sure the problem was neither in GtkAda 2.8.1 nor in the compiler (tried -O0). So I reverted to GPS 3.1.3, and I had to patch it so it would compile with GtkAda 2.8.1. That's what is now in unstable. It starts and it can read files and the options dialogue boxes work, but I too have had some crashes. I tried to debug but family problems at home made that impossible. So, your help will be appreciated, definitely. The crashes I experienced were due to explicit raises, not Storage_Error. And I did not see the infinite loop you report, either. As I said, many parts of GPS do work, but if you can't edit project properties (as in my experience), the thing is pretty much useless, so I agree that the bug is grave. GPS consists of ~280.000 lines of code, not counting blank or comment lines, and not counting GtkAda which is itself another 90.000 lines. Luckily, the source is very clear and well commented. If you would like to help debug GPS, please start by downloading the source package and editing the top-level gps.gpr file. Look for package Builder, and add -g to the Default_Switches (Ada) line, e.g. package Builder is for Default_Switches (Ada) use (-g, ...); end Builder; then do debian/rules gnat-gps. After a long time (3h40 on my old laptop but only 48 minutes on an AMD64 buildd) you will end up with a large file called gnat-gps, containing debugging information. You can run that under gdb or (better) gnatgdb from the package gnat-gdb. The latter allows you to break on exceptions (break exception), so you can see where the Storage_Error is being raised. You may also want to try removing all compiler options; maybe the compiler is emitting wrong code or something. In particular, I usually compile with -gnato (full range checks, so we could get a Constraint_Error) and -gnatVa (full optional run-time checks, which can raise various exceptions). If you remove these options, you'll stand a lesser chance of getting exceptions and a higher chance of getting random memory corruption and segfaults :/ I keep my compiler scripts and patches in a Monotone database which is available for anonymous access; please tell me if you're interested. -- Ludovic Brenta. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe.
