Bug#393451: Is this issue still present in the sid 2.6.18-3+ kernel ?

2006-11-01 Thread Sven Luther
Hi,

As subject says, 2.6.18 is the etch target kernel, so it would be nice to have
information about the presence of this bug in 2.6.18.

In any case, this is probably not going to stop the migration of the 2.6.18
kernel to etch, since the bug is present in etch.

Furthermore, it only affects xen systems, so critical severity may be a bit
overkill.

Friendly,

Sven Luther

It is probably due to the recent problems with libsdl pulling too many

It will anyway be fixed with the next upload.

Bug#396459: libsdl1.2-dev: Dropping *-dev dependencies breaks package builds too close to release

After the recent upload of libsdl1.2-dev downgrading the *-dev
dependencies to recommends, lots of packages (for example mednafen,
missing a libgl-dev dependency) have started failing to build from source
because they don't properly declare those dependencies themselves
introduced by their own source. While this is unquestionably a bug in
the other packages, the change breaks too many packages close to release
time, so in my opinion the new version of libsdl1.2-dev should not make
   it into etch.

As this is a case of exposing RC bugs in those packages, not causing them,
I'm inclined to disagree. Do you have a sense of how many packages are
actually affected by this change? I would hope that in this day and age,
the final count of affected packages would be relatively small.

So far, out of about 50 packages I've tried rebuilding with libsdl* and sdl*
rebuilt, I've found 8 failures. Assuming the proportion continues for the
rest, with approximately 200 SDL-using packages that I counted, that makes
 about 30 new RC bugs.

Some of the most common failures:

 * [2] SDL_syswm.h needs the X headers. I'm not sure whether this should be
fixed in libsdl1.2-dev or not; if it is, that could take care of about 1/3 to
 1/2 of the failures.

Seems like a clear case of a bug in libsdl1.2-dev to me, that should be
fixed by re-adding that particular dependency.

 * [4] Packages using GL without proper Build-Depends.

What percentage of the build failures are caused by this? Those are still
bugs in the packages using GL in this way (and the bugs should be reported
and fixed), but if the number of affected packages is large enough, it may
be worth having libsdl1.2-dev re-add this dep as well for the sake of
expediency.

As a side note: audacious failed because pbuilder doesn't
understand libasound2-dev [linux-any]. Do the buildd's understand it?

No, they do not.

Thanks,

Bug#393273: FTBFSes on arm because of libhunspell-dev not available

2006-11-01 Thread Steve Langasek
Hi Masayuki,

Is there any progress on this bug? This build failure on arm makes it
impossible to update enchant for the two RC bugs that the library has in
testing, and there is no sign that libhunspell-dev will be available on arm
any time soon. Is there some way that enchant can be built without
libhunspell? I didn't find any obvious way to remove this build-dependency
when looking at the source.

Thanks,

Bug#396459: libsdl1.2-dev: Dropping *-dev dependencies breaks package builds too close to release

Seems like a clear case of a bug in libsdl1.2-dev to me, that should be
fixed by re-adding that particular dependency.

  * [4] Packages using GL without proper Build-Depends.

What percentage of the build failures are caused by this? Those are still
bugs in the packages using GL in this way (and the bugs should be reported
and fixed), but if the number of affected packages is large enough, it may
be worth having libsdl1.2-dev re-add this dep as well for the sake of
 expediency.

Both the missing X and GL dependencies were bugs in libsdl1.2-dev
that are now fixed in 1.2.11-7.

Hi Lucas,

cogito 0.18 and newer depends and build-depends on git-core = 1.4.2.
While your test, git-core 1.4.1.1 was in etch, now it's 1.4.3.2 and
cogito should build fine. The bug is in the versioned depends which
miss the epoch.

Downgrading to severity normal as git-core in etch is recent enough.

Thanks, Gerrit.

After the recent upload of libsdl1.2-dev downgrading the *-dev dependencies to
recommends, lots of packages (for example mednafen, missing a libgl-dev
dependency) have started failing to build from source because they don't
properly declare those dependencies themselves introduced by their own
source. While this is unquestionably a bug in the other packages, the change
breaks too many packages close to release time, so in my opinion the new
version of libsdl1.2-dev should not make it into etch.

(Sorry debian-release for not doing X-Debbugs-CC, but kmail still doesn't
support setting custom headers afaict...)

Bug#395252: Same discussion concerning gst-ffmpeg

2006-11-01 Thread Loïc Minier
Hi,

My opinion on this matter was requested, so I'm documenting it here.
gst-ffmpeg suffers from a very similar problem, since it has an
embedded fork of ffmpeg. My understanding is that upstream needs more
than ffmpeg's offer in the first place, and also rewrote the build
completely to be based on autotools (they told me the patch to switch
to the autotools was rejected multiple times by ffmpeg's upstream).

gst-ffmpeg upstream is maintaining a ffmpeg mirror, and has a complex
procedure to update to newer snapshots. In particular, because of the
autotools patch, each file addition or removal needs to be added to
Makefile.am, and, in general, each codec additions or removal needs to
be updated in the caps definitions (caps is some sort of MIME type
 for a codec whichin GStreamer).

I did try (last week!) to build gst-ffmpeg against Debian's ffmpeg
 /source/, but:
 - the process was very fragile, I had to fix the build a dozen of
times, the patches didn't apply cleanly; I couldn't find anyway to
improve this, upstream already uses quilt, and the problem is more in
mapping from one build system to another
 - some semantical changes will always be required for major uploads,
such as when codecs get added or removed from ffmpeg (gst-ffmpeg uses
codec #defines from ffmpeg, so if you remove codecs in ffmpeg, you
   need to update gst-ffmpeg)
 - it was necessarily based on the ffmpeg *source*, and not the
libavcodec/libavformat interfaces; would we want to base gst-ffmpeg
build on Debian's ffmpeg, we would need a ffmpeg-src package

I currently see no way to achieve building of gst-ffmpeg in a sane and
maintainable way, and it seems we are very far from that. Very very
 far.

Nevertheless, there an upstream request to use an out of tree ffmpeg
filed against gst-ffmpeg both in Debian and upstream.

I don't consider the case of gst-ffmpeg to be in any way similar to
mplayer's case; xine-lib would be closer. Consider xine (which uses
ffmpeg via xine-lib) or vlc, they match mplayer in functionality and do
build directly or indirectly against libavcodec / libavformat AFAICT.

   Bye,

Bug#394934: cupsys: 1.2.3 and later = Printer not connected; will retry in 30 seconds...

2006-11-01 Thread Steve Langasek
 Hi,

I have the same problem: cups does not work any longer with my Epson C82
USB printer. Here is what I see in /var/log/cups/error_log:

Er, how can you claim you have the same problem when your logs are totally
different?

 E [01/Nov/2006:09:11:54 +0100] PID 5051 (/usr/lib/cups/filter/pstoraster)
 crashed on signal 9!
 E [01/Nov/2006:09:11:54 +0100] PID 5052
 (/usr/lib/cups/filter/rastertogutenprint.5.0) crashed on signal 9!
 E [01/Nov/2006:09:11:54 +0100] PID 5053 (/usr/lib/cups/backend/usb) crashed
 on signal 9!

I will raise the severity of this bug because not being able to printer
to a USB printer deserves a grave severity IMHO.

signal 9 is SIGKILL. What is killing these processes? I would be surprised
if cupsys itself is calling kill -9 on them.

I don't use cups myself so I haven't tested this, but I think there are a
few other people out there using cups with usb printers, so if this was
really a bug in the package I would have expected it to be reported before
now.

Package: gthumb
Version: 3:2.6.9-3
Severity: serious

The gthumb package uses dh_gconf, but still uses gconftool to register
the schemas at the former place. This will fail if the file doesn't
exist anymore, and even worse, will override the defaults with the ones
from the old version.

Furthermore, these schemas are not uninstalled in the prerm script. This
means the cruft is left /etc. You should probably add a rule to
uninstall them nevertheless in the new version.

Package: gem
Severity: serious
Justification: contains arial.ttf, which is not distributable

The gem package contains /usr/lib/pd/doc/gem/05.text/arial.ttf, which
has this embedded copyright information:

Typeface © The Monotype Corporation plc. Data © The Monotype Corporation
plc/Type Solutions Inc. 1990-1992. All Rights Reserved

Please:

  * remove it from the gem package and the equivalent file from the
source package.
  * inform upstream that they should not be distributing the two
copies of Arial, except as arial32.exe
  * http://corefonts.sourceforge.net/faq8.htm
  * http://corefonts.sourceforge.net/eula.htm
  * if arial.ttf is required:
  * depend on msttcorefonts
  * make the programs check that Arial/etc are available
when starting
  * move the package to contrib
  * otherwise suggest a free font - bitstream vera for example

I also notice that the source package contains Courier New and Times New
Roman, with the same issues.

When building 'gem' in a clean unstable chroot,
I get the following error:

Reading package lists...

E: Package xlibmesa-glu-dev has no installation candidate
E: Failed to satisfy Build-Depends dependency for gem: xlibmesa-glu-dev
Package xlibmesa-glu-dev is not available, but is referred to by another

With the attached patch which removes xlibmesa-glu-dev from the Build-Depends
'gem' can be built on unstable.

---BeginMessage---
Package: jwm
Version: 0.23-3
Severity: serious

Hello,

This is a serious bug filed against your package because it
build-depends on xlibs-dev, which as announced in [1] a while ago, is
no longer available in sid. This makes your package fail to build from
  source.

[1] http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel-announce/2005/11/msg00022.html

To fix this bug, you need to update your build-dependencies and
substitute xlibs-dev for the list of individual X development
libraries that your package needs to be built. You can find detailed
information about how to do that in the DependsXlibsDev wiki page [2].

[2] http://wiki.debian.org/DependsXlibsDev

As indicated by the Release Team [3], the full transition from XFree86
to Xorg is a release blocker for Etch, which means that Etch will not
be released until this bug is fixed (or your package removed from
testing). So, please, try to fix in a timely manner.

[3] http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel-announce/2005/10/msg4.html

The number of affected packages by the xlibs-dev transition is huge,
so if you feel like helping with patches or uploads, feel free to
follow the instructions contained in the wiki page above. A list of
affected packages can be found here [4].

[4] http://people.debian.org/~adeodato/release-usertag/transition-xlibs-dev

Finally, if there's a strong reason for which your package should not
be NMUed, please note so in this bug report. Prospective NMUers will
read your reasoning, and will decide if it's strong enough to delay
  their upload.

  Thanks for your collaboration!

Please set the mkinitrd.conf MODULES value to dep, at least on powerpc. ON
powerpc, we have at least three subarches (pegasos 1, prep and some oldworlds)
which have troubles with either bigger initrd images (bigger than 1.5MB
compressed on pegasos 1), or bigger kernel+initrd images (bigger than 4MB for
both on prep and/or some oldworlds). A initrd created with MODULES=most on a
prep box seems to yield a 5MB (compressed) initrd, while setting it to
MODULES=dep results in a 1.5MB (compressed) initrd, which should be mostly ok
on all those subarches. The bug is marked severity important, but i feel that
it should probably be limit on RC-severity, since it results in a unbootable
machine post d-i install.

Would be nice if all those useless ide drivers and filesystems could be
removed from the initrd, in favor of keeping only the filesystem and disk
driver modules on which root resides.

Package: kernel-patch-freeswan

Justification: breaks unrelated software

Hi,

the FreeS/WAN kernel patch contains a serious bug which may cause errors
like this:
kernel: unregister_netdevice: waiting for ippp0 to become free. Usage count = 3

This happens if I try to stop the isdnutils via /etc/init.d/isdnutils.
The message is produced by net/core/dev.c, about line 2708 (2.4.27).
The only way to stop this messages is to crash the hole system (pressing
the reset button).

The problem is known to the freeswan-folks and I found a patch on a
Gentoo Linux site which is working very well for me.

I hope I could help you.
Bye,
Meini.

Bug#396528: hunspell: FTBFS on arm: 3 tests failed

2006-11-01 Thread Frank Küster
Package: hunspell
Version: 1.1.4-3
Severity: serious

Strange that this has never been reported, but it seems hunspell never
was built successfully on arm. I checked the last three build logs from
http://buildd.debian.org/build.php?arch=armpkg=hunspell, and the
failure always seems to be the same, namely three tests failing.

This blocks at least one package which build-depends on libhunspell-dev,
#393273.

Regards, Frank

ii perl 5.6.1-7Larry Wall's Practical Extraction
ii perl-base [perlapi-5.6.1] 5.6.1-7The Pathologically Eclectic Rubbis

Basically, the bug discovered is with Quota::query and Quota::setqlim.
They plainly, don't work properly on this system and a few other systems
that we tested on. Mainly intel pentium based systems. Quota::query
produces No quotas on this system ALWAYS, while Quota::setqlim works with
$block_soft swapped with $inode_soft and $block_hard swapped with
$inode_hard. Ie. you need to specify $block_soft in place of
$inode_soft and vice versa for it to set correctly.

Using the newest libquota-perl package from unstable by backporting
fixes the problem.

Bug#396534: coco-doc: No Sources, incomplete copyright file

2006-11-01 Thread Frank Küster
Package: coco-doc
Version: 20060919-1
Severity: serious

This package includes two PDF files, UserManual.pdf and
DataStructures.pdf, without corresponding sources. According to
pdfinfo, the sources are Microsoft Word documents; this is not nice, but
it is definitely preferred to directly editing a PDF document.

I'm also not sure whether the embedded fonts are free.

It also does not contain any information on the copyright of the Debian
packaging and, more severely, no information on the download location.
I assume it is http://ssw.jku.at/Coco/.

Regards, Frank

 This patch might help:

 http://www.fastcgi.com/archives/fastcgi-developers/2005-December/004060.html

Looks like mod_fastcgi uses a deprecated 1.3 interface, and the
compatibility #defines that existed in 2.0 are gone in 2.2.

The patch worked for me (once I worked out that I needed to build the DSO
with the correct version of the -dev package!)

Package: evolution-data-server
Version: 1.6.3-1
Severity: grave
Tags: patch
Justification: causes non-serious data loss

As discussed on the Evolution hackers mailing list under the subject automated
testing
of Evolution data server with SyncEvolution I am filing this issue as a
reminder that
I have a patch for the problem, available from the upstream bug report of the
problem:
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=363102

It would be great to apply this in Debian until it also makes its way into the
upstream
version. There are patches for 1.6.3 and 1.8.1 (experimental?).

Package: evolution-data-server
Version: 1.6.3-1
Severity: grave
Tags: patch
Justification: causes non-serious data loss

As discussed on the Evolution hackers mailing list under the subject automated
testing
of Evolution data server with SyncEvolution I am filing this issue as a
reminder that
I have a patch for the problem, available from the upstream bug report of the
problem:
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=363102

It would be great to apply this in Debian until it also makes its way into the
upstream
version. There are patches for 1.6.3 and 1.8.1 (experimental?).

Bug#383481: Must source code be easy to understand to fall under DFSG?

2006-11-01 Thread md
On Oct 31, Francesco Poli [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

IMHO, DFSG#2 refers to source code, as is usually defined, that is to
say, as in the GNU GPL v2.
No, it does not. As usual, you are just inventing new requirements which
are not specified by the DFSG.

Deliberately obfuscated code is absolutely against the spirit of Free
 Software.
But if it is X11-licensed then it is still free software, which is what
matters here.

Bug#396528: hunspell: FTBFS on arm: 3 tests failed

2006-11-01 Thread Rene Engelhard
severity 396528 important
thanks

Frank Küster wrote:
Strange that this has never been reported, but it seems hunspell never
was built successfully on arm. I checked the last three build logs from
 http://buildd.debian.org/build.php?arch=armpkg=hunspell, and the
failure always seems to be the same, namely three tests failing.

And because this never built it is not RC.

This blocks at least one package which build-depends on libhunspell-dev,
 #393273.

Bug#396549: debian/copyright does not state GPL exception of totem

2006-11-01 Thread Thadeu Lima de Souza Cascardo
Package: totem

Severity: serious
Justification: Policy 2.3

Totem copyright holders have allowed an exception to the GPL so Totem
may be distributed with GStreamer non-GPL plugins. However, this is not
stated in the debian/copyright file.

Bug#396393: inkscape: No tight-fitting bounding box in EPS output

2006-11-01 Thread Frank Küster

Emilio Jose Padron Gonzalez [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

 Package: inkscape

EPS output seems to be broken.

Indeed. However, eps output is only one of a couple of output formats
of inkscape. And it's not even hard to open the eps file in a text
editor and fix it: One needs to remove the line

%%DocumentMedia: plain 596 842 0 () ()

I'm not a PS expert, nor a C++ guru. But I think that

- it doesn't make sense at all to specify DocumentMedia for eps export

- the attached patch is all that's needed.

The patch has been tested on sid with the kk.svg file in the original
report, and it produced a nicely fit eps file, a one-page ps file, and a
somehow-nicely fit epsi file (the part of the figure that's off the
default page is clipped of, but that might be a feature, or a different
bug).

Regards, Frank

Bug#282147: update-inetd interaction

2006-11-01 Thread Roland Stigge
tag 282147 patch

Hi,

attached you will find a patch that modifies update-inetd to use debconf
for interaction (and therefore non-interaction if non-interactive, with
reasonable defaults).

Submitters of the respective bugs, and maintainers, please review. I can
upload the fix if necessary.

bye,

 Hello Makoto,

There is an error when attempting to install preview-latex:

   emacs-install: /usr/lib/emacsen-common/packages/install/preview-latex

   dpkg: error processing emacs21 (--configure):
subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 1

This is expected, since preview latex has been merged into auctex, and
auctex has changed internally meanwhile.

I'm surprised that preview-latex is still there. Isn't it completely
 replaced by auctex?

At a short glance, it seems to me auctex should not only declare
Conflicts and Replaces, but also Provides.

This has now happened, auctex in sid and testing does this.

 And preview-latex should
simply be removed from etch and sid.

ftp-masters, would you please do this?

Regards, Frank

Thanks for your report. I think Debian only ships GStreamer plugins
which are compatible with the license of totem, hence I'm downgrading
the severity of your report. I'm also extending the range of affected
versions as I don't think this is a new issue, and don't want to delay
 testing propagation because of this.

I've also seen multiple errors in the debian/copyright, for example the
Totem Playlist parser library is licensed under the LGPL upstream, but
under the GPL in Debian. This is not incompatible, but should be fixed
 ASAP.

I've fixed these mistakes in our SVN repository, and I'll upload a new
totem after the current one transitions to testing.

I will raise the severity of this bug because not being able to printer
to a USB printer deserves a grave severity IMHO.

signal 9 is SIGKILL. What is killing these processes? I would be surprised
if cupsys itself is calling kill -9 on them.

cupsd will send SIGKILL to the filter processes if cupsdFreeAllJobs
is called by user's request.
I'm sorry Laurent, but your log only showed you removed all jobs.

Original bug report by Vedran may be considerable as grave rather
than as important, but I haven't met it on my test environment.
I know usb-unix.c code was changed since 1.2.3.

Thanks,

Bug#396578: backupninja: PostgreSQL handler broken on VServers

  /bin/gzip /backup/postgresql/db.sql.gz
  Warning: /bin/sh: /backup/postgresql/db.sql.gz: Permission denied

Looking at the code, I found what was giving that behaviour:

  if [ $usevserver = yes ]; then
 pguid=`$VSERVER $vsname exec getent passwd $PGSQLUSER | awk -F: '{print
$3}'`
  else
 pguid=`getent passwd postgres | awk -F: '{print $3}'`
  fi

So it looks like PGSQLUSER wasnt set in my config and then getent
matched all passwd entries, resulting in a wrong chown $pguid
$vroot$backupdir.

Then I grep'ed backupninja source and didnt found any mention to
PGSQLUSER other than this line at pgsql handler and the Changelog
entry for 0.9.4 introducing this new variable.

I'm wondering where to set this variable and if theres still a
lot of hardcoded postgres user in this handler.
