Bug#404747: When using fuse file system, kernel version 7, davfs2 crashed

Why is this release-critical? Surely it would be better to release with a
version of davfs2 that works with coda (which is what's documented in the
package description), rather than not shipping it at all?

Cheers,

Bug#404749: closed by Filipus Klutiero <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> (Invalid)

2006-12-27 Thread Mark Whitis
This report is invalid. As you state yourself, "Actually, you can
compile them but you can't load them because of the kernel

version difference."

That does not invalidate the report. The two packages do not work
together properly, though there may be people who need to use them
together. gcc should still probably be
flagged as incompatible with that kernel, though maybe dpkg/apt needs a
soft conflict tag - report a warning but don't prevent the install.

The issue could probably still be addressed to some degree with
the "Recommends:" tag.

Soft-conflict: linux-image-2.6.16-1-686, "Loadable Kernel Modules must be
compiled with same gcc version as kernel"

I strongly suggest you to reinstall a Debian release which is
appropriate for your level of Debian knowledge, that is stable or testing.

Don't be an ass. I have over a decade of linux experience (and SunOS,
Solaris, Ultrix, AIX, etc. before that) and am the co-author of a linux
programming book. Most of my experience is with (or even predates) RPM
based systems but I do have several debian boxes. If the incompatibility
was not obvious to me, it is a debian packaging defect not a personal one.
But if it causes problems for me, it will cause even greater problems for
less experienced people so I generously used my valuable time to report
the bug so other people wouldn't have the same problem. I was able to
install gcc-4.0 to fix the immediate problem and will probably do a kernel
upgrade to 2.6.18-3 in the future.

And I don't see how "testing" would be an appropriate recommendation for
someone you think is inexperienced. And the recommendation to

switch distributions in either direction because of your flawed perception
is non-sense.

In fact, the reason I upgraded to unstable in the first place is that
stable is essentially unusable these days. It is just too damn old, what
with debian developers wasting time over license fanaticism instead of
making a working distribution when a new "stable" was already long
overdue. I already had to upgrade much of the system to
"unstable" and APT was having hissy fits of wanting to upgrade huge
numbers of packages, remove large numbers of packages, or even "you can't
get there from here" when I tried to install various packages. KDE,
gnome, new kernels, x.org, udev, just too much in need of

replacement. "stable" has essentially become unmaintainable on desktop systems
(might be ok on some servers with no peripherals and no GUI programs).

I never would have installed stable in the first place if unstable
snapshots were availible on DVD.

An example of a more appropriate response would have been:
"Yes, that is a problem but one which the current packaging
system fails to provide tools to address. Some developers
need to be able to install multiple versions of gcc to compile
programs for other systems and if I put in a "Conflicts:" tag,
it would interfere with that and using "--force" might be
dangerous (more so in apt-get than dpkg). I am, therefore, filing a
bug report on dpkg suggesting that a new tag be added to debian
   package files for soft conflicts"
But "Recommends: " might have helped, though I don't know if dist-upgrade
would have printed a message based on that.

Oh, I did file the bug on dpkg so there is no longer any need for you to
do so. That was roughly the 43rd bug report I filed today.
(some were on upstream packages).

Hi. I have a question. I hope not be obvious.

I tried to reproduce the bug about upx error, but I couldn't.

What was the conditions under it should be proved?

I have i386/unstable with kernel 2.6.16 and 2.6.17 and I can't see it.

The package builds fine in two 386 machines.

Bug#404611: Could easily be fixed in mozilla-imagezoom

2006-12-27 Thread Yaroslav Halchenko
reassign 404611 mozilla-imagezoom
thanks

Thanks Jan
(Now I CC to icedove maintainer)

I am adjusting imagezoom: actually I didn't have to make those
per-application preferences links anyways for iceweasel and icedove -
they are doing fine with per-extension preferences... iceape/mozilla
though needs them installed in application preferences directory.
That upload will close the bug, but also I want to ask few questions:

* Is there a plan to have similar move of arch indep files under share
and symlinking for *icedove*? (which is an apple from the same
tree as iceweasel, so they better be consistent, and since even iceape
  did similar move already)

* I can't find in iceweasel/changelog.Debian.gz when transition to
share from lib has happened. Thus I can't estimate when it happened.
Since it has happened recently, I guess, I would say IMHO it
wasn't a good decision to make standing in the doorway of the fresh
  release

* Are there plans to have proper "hardcoded" shift into using
/usr/share/ for arch-indep parts, ie would iceweasel code be modified
  and links removed some time?

* components/ directory has mixed set (arch indep and arch dep) files --
will it be ever split into 2

* It would be great if someone organize a page on wiki.debian
summarizing how ice* products are organized within file hierarchy.
That would help other maintainers (mostly maintainers of
extensions I guess) to provide proper placing of their files

Bug#404611: the problem is

2006-12-27 Thread Peter Green
that iceweasel replaces that directory with a symlink but it can't do that
if another package already has files in it. What i think needs to happen
is that any plugins need to be modified to only put the files in the
iceweasel directory and then i belive the iceweasel package needs to be
made to conflict with the old versions of those packages but i'm not an
expert on this.

Me thinks it is still RC, as it makes monotone completely
unusable. Even if it is PowerPC specific, Debian is still supported on
all architectures, not just Intel.

Also, I may have forgotten to mention this bug prevents other
operations from working too, such as commit.

I am not sure what I can do to debug this, but FYI:

Bug#404724: linux-image-2.6.16-1-686: can't compile kernel modules, incompatible with gcc 4.1

2006-12-27 Thread Mark Whitis

2.6.16-12 is not in unstable but 2.6.18-3, which is compiled with gcc
4.1. I suggest you upgrade to that version.

Thanks for the quick response.

Unfortunately, apt-get dist-upgrade doesn't know that 2.6.18-3 replaces
2.6.16-1. Since I managed to get things working by reverting to gcc 4.0
and upgrading to the newest nvidia driver (see Bug #282183), I might stay
at 2.6.16 for the time being.

Package: gcc-4.1
Version: 4.1.1-21
Severity: critical
Justification: breaks unrelated software

Perhaps I should have said it breaks the entire system because depending
on what drivers you need, most GUI applications are severely affected
and you have no reasonable way to try new driver versions.

I just did a dist-upgrade. Kernel version 2.6.16-1-686

You can't recompile kernel modules because the kernel was compiled with
gcc 4.0 and you can not compile loadable kernel modules with gcc 4.1 for
a kernel compiled with 4.0. Actually, you can compile them but you can't
load them because of the kernel version difference. Without the ability
to compile kernel modules, you can't recompile the nvidia drivers (direct
from nvidia). And there are SEVERE display update problems in the
current configuration.

gcc-4.1 should not have been put in unstable without also putting
in a new kernel version that was compiled with 4.1 as well as all the
packages which include loadable kernel modules. Also, gcc-4.1
should have had "conflicts with kernel-2.6.16-1-686, etc.".

See bug #4047244 (kernel) and #282183 (nvidia drivers)

Bug#395917: babygimp: doesn't work with current version of perl-tk

On 12/27/06, Gunnar Wolf <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote:

Hi,

Any update on babygimp's status? If it no longer works and cannot be
fixed, maybe the best course of action is to remove it from Etch?

AFAIK, babygimp should already be removed from Etch per an email I
sent earlier to the release team. I checked qa.debian.org (on my
maintainer page) and no version of babygimp is currently listed in
testing, so I think things are OK.

I haven't had time to dig in and see what else can be easily done to
fix the problem, and I have not received any other emails from
interested parties. I will probably remove the package from Debian
entirely sometime after etch is released.

Hi

Your package is not installable as it depends on apache2-common which is not
available in unstable anymore. You might want to update the dependency to
apache2.2-common.

For Etch it's too late to include newer driver snapshots, unless they
fix RC bugs.

Generally I'm not a fan of external driver snapshots providing a more
recent version than linux-2.6. They're a PITA to track security-support-wise
when they get shipped in a stable release, they confuse users and they
sometimes introduce additional bugs due when kernel API changes break things.

So, I'd recommend to remove wacom-source from sid as well.

Cheers,
Moritz

Bug#404749: gcc-4.1: gcc 4.1 breaks kernel module compile

2006-12-27 Thread Mark Whitis

From an upstream e-mail report --- start
When using fuse file system, kernel version 7, davfs2 crashed. But this is the

Bug#404701: wmcalc: Buggy math, not suitable for release

2006-12-27 Thread Gunnar Wolf
severity 404701 wishlist
thanks

Hi,

I am degrading this bug from RC to wishlist - This program _is_
working as it is often expected. Wmcalc mimics a pocket calculator,
where all operators have equal precedence, as its interface lacks (or,
to be more correct, is designed not to provide, in order to save
space) parentheses or other means to properly provide nesting and
proper precedence.

Wmcalc is designed to be as small as possible. Given its interface, I
would be surprised by it if it applied higher precedence to some
operators than to others.

Bug#404701: eh?

2006-12-27 Thread Joey Hess
I'm having a hard time taking this bug's severity seriously.

Firstly, it's not uncommon for very cheap calculators (especially old
ones) to evaluate each operation immediately[1][2]. Doing order of operations
requires ram to store pending expressions. Doing order of operations
in a usable manner also requires paren keys to override the order, and
a display to show the expression. Otherwise you're just typing blind and
hoping that the calculator happens to do the right thing, even with
order of operations.

Which brings me to my second point, which is that a calculator is a
tool, and it's up to the user to use it correctly. I would never rely on
any random new calculator like this to get the order right, so I'd
always feed it simple expressions in the correct order anyway, and press
= after each, and so no matter what arbitrary ordering or lack of
ordering the calculator happens to use would't matter.

So I'd be more concerned with calculators dropping precision at the
number of digets that can be displayed, and other issues noted in this
bug report than this OoO issue, and I don't think it's RC.
(#debian-release seems to agree.)

In closing, I can't belive you suckered me into typing so much about a
program I'd never use. Go qalc!

Herm, because atari-fdisk directly calls Linux' _llseek() without
taking care about the size of arguments, without taking care of 64bits
architectures, etc. while GNU libc has been providing a sane way for
doing 64bits lseek() for a long time. Here is a patch for using that
instead.

Migemo seems to call 'ruby' command, which is included in the
package 'ruby'. So, it needs to change to call 'ruby1.8' or to
require the ruby package, I think.

Without the 'ruby' package, Migemo warns:

When can we expect an upload of the next version of wengophone? Or
should I just upload the fix as NMU for now?

Package: xserver-xorg
Version: 1:7.1.0-5
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

xserver-xorg is not working at all in Alpha architecture.
I have installed on an Alpha PWS 500 and the X server could not start
with two different video cards (and video drivers).
All are PCI cards: a Voodoo 5/5500 64MB and a Matrox G450 32MB DDR PCI.

Both cards works fine with XFree 4.3.0

The X server simply doesn't start, the process takes 99,9% of CPU time
and hangs until killed (by user kill -9).

Just ask if any other test is required.

2.6.16-12 is not in unstable but 2.6.18-3, which is compiled with gcc
4.1. I suggest you upgrade to that version.

Hi,

On http://www.mysql.com/products/connector/j/, version 5.0.4 of MySQL
Connector/J is published. A Debian package from this stuff, including
source package, is available from

 deb http://non-gnu.uvt.nl/debian sarge libmysql-java

(If you prefer manual fetching with dget, use
http://non-gnu.uvt.nl/debian/sarge/libmysql-java/pool/mysql-connector-java_5.0.4-2.dsc.)

It'd be nice if a 5.0.x version could get shipped with Debian; possibly
based upon the work mentioned here.

Thanks, Bye,

Joost

Bug#404723: src/ne_uri.c:ne_uri_parse():179 (uri_lookup(x) macro) - SIGSERV when parsing a non-ASCII character (>128)

2006-12-27 Thread Modestas Vainius
Package: libneon26
Version: 0.26.2-3mdx1
Severity: grave
Tags: patch

Hi,

libneon26 ne_uri_parse() has severe problems parsing uris with non-ASCII
characters. Real world case is trying to save a document (example attached)
with openoffice.org-writer containing a hyperlink with non-ascii characters
in the web link. The above action leads to OOo segfault. Consider the gdb
session bellow (reproducable with the attached document, type a character
and attempt to resave the document):

Severity: wishlist

Hi,

On http://www.mysql.com/products/connector/j/, version 5.0.4 of MySQL
Connector/J is published. A Debian package from this stuff, including
source package, is available from

 deb http://non-gnu.uvt.nl/debian sarge libmysql-java

(If you prefer manual fetching with dget, use
http://non-gnu.uvt.nl/debian/sarge/libmysql-java/pool/mysql-connector-java_5.0.4-2.dsc.)

It'd be nice if a 5.0.x version could get shipped with Debian; possibly
based upon the work mentioned here.

Thanks, Bye,

Joost

I am receiving "unknown type '246 in column..." error when using mysql 5
tables in openoffice.org base. this is a known issue over at mysql. you
can read about it at http://bugs.mysql.com/bug.php?id=14609

this bug was fixed in 3.1.13 of the upstream package and was in the
nightly builds as of January 2006. upstream already has 3.1.14 out as
well.

this bug makes the package unusable for me as I am using the dec type
fields in mysql. I could change them to floats, but that seems silly as
they aren't... an upgrade would be truly appreciated.

Bug#404724: linux-image-2.6.16-1-686: can't compile kernel modules, incompatible with gcc 4.1

2006-12-27 Thread Mark Whitis
Package: linux-image-2.6.16-1-686
Version: 2.6.16-12
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

The current versions of kernel and gcc in unstable conflict, though
not detected at package load time. This means that it is not possible
to compile loadable kernel modules, which most end-users need to
do at some point (not to mention module developers).

I just did a dist-upgrade from stable to unstable in the last 24 hours.
After that there were serius screen update problems so I tried to install
the nvidia driver (direct from nvidia, the older version I had been using
before). It reported that the version of gcc used to compile
the kernel (4.0) is not the same as the version of gcc on the system
(4.1) and that the kernel module loader would reject any modules built
with gcc 4.1 (and indeed the module was rejected).

Package: libmysql-java
Version: 3.1.11-1
Severity: wishlist

Hi,

On http://www.mysql.com/products/connector/j/, version 5.0.4 of MySQL
Connector/J is published. A Debian package from this stuff, including
source package, is available from

 deb http://non-gnu.uvt.nl/debian sarge libmysql-java

(If you prefer manual fetching with dget, use
http://non-gnu.uvt.nl/debian/sarge/libmysql-java/pool/mysql-connector-java_5.0.4-2.dsc.)

It'd be nice if a 5.0.x version could get shipped with Debian; possibly
based upon the work mentioned here.

Thanks, Bye,

Joost

I am receiving "unknown type '246 in column..." error when using mysql 5
tables in openoffice.org base. this is a known issue over at mysql. you
can read about it at http://bugs.mysql.com/bug.php?id=14609

this bug was fixed in 3.1.13 of the upstream package and was in the
nightly builds as of January 2006. upstream already has 3.1.14 out as
well.

this bug makes the package unusable for me as I am using the dec type
fields in mysql. I could change them to floats, but that seems silly as
they aren't... an upgrade would be truly appreciated.

Bug#393606: mail-notification-evolution broke again

found 393606 4.0~rc2.dfsg.1-5
thanks

After upgrading to 3.0.dfsg.1-10, mail-notification-evolution was again
unable to contact Evolution (2.8). I just upgraded to the version in
experimental and still can't get it to work.

Package: tk8.2, tk8.3

Severity: grave

The wish executable of both tk 8.2 and tk 8.3 only produce a
segmentation fault when started on an arm host. tk 8.3 and
tk 8.4 on unstable work fine, though. This renders the tcl/tk
environment on woody/arm quite useless...

This happens
. in the chroot environments on debussy
. in the buildd on europa
. in the host system on debussy with ForwardX11 to a running
   X-Terminal.

It would be nice if the maintainer(s) could work on a fix and discuss
with the stable release manager if tk8.2 and tk8.3 could be updated
in woody. (Hint: he will probably ok this if the patch isn't too
intrusive).

Nobody seems to care anyway.
This problem is probably not existent in the current distribution.

Jean-Charles, except #404140, do you see any other bug to be fixed before
uploading this sympa package to unstable ?

Any other tester ?

Stefan, please upload new version with a fix for #404140 to unstable ASAP !
We need to get this version in etch soon.

vlc Depends: vlc-nox
and vlc-nox contains /usr/share/doc/vlc/

see
http://packages.debian.org/cgi-bin/search_contents.pl?searchmode=filelist&word=vlc-nox&version=unstable&arch=i386&page=1&number=all

Moreover /usr/share/doc/vlc-nox -> vlc/

Is this a problem?

Bug#404701: wmcalc: Buggy math, not suitable for release

2006-12-27 Thread Frank Küster
Package: wmcalc
Version: 0.3-2.2
Severity: serious

>From the package's README:

,
| BUGS:
| -
| Remember, they're just undocumented FEATURES!!!
|
| * The display can lose the last digit of a three character exponential
| notation number.
|
| * Due to an implementation fault, at every step of calculations, precision
| is lost, as the number is only as accurate at that displayed.
|
| * Order of operations: 1 + 2 * 5 = 15, not 11, as it should.
|
| * Changing sign when the display is blank results in "-0". Further entry
| yields "-05...," but this does not affect calculations.
|
`

In particular the third item makes this unsuitable for a release. An
electronic calculator that does not correctly obey the order of
operations is not useful. It is harmful.

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ apt-rdepends -r wmcalc
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree... Done
wmcalc

The only problem with removing this package from etch is that it already
exists in sarge (same upstream version). BTW, upstream seems to be MIA,
too (homepage gone).

I appreciate your consideration on the ping pong issue and persisting
after my perhaps premature closure of the bug. Anyway, I would not
have considered your reopening the bug to be rude or inappropriate
since you are in fact supplying additional helpful information that
was not present the first time around.

I have reopened the bug and will look into the problem more deeply,
attempting to determine whether the problem is in libtiff or something
else such as dpkg or apt. I can confirm that changing the doc
directory to a link has happened since sarge, so I'll try doing the
sarge to etch upgrade with that package and see what happens. Thanks
again.

2006-12-27 Thread Yaroslav Halchenko
Well. Situation persists after reinstallation.
Purging first and reinstallation of libtiff-tools helps.

Thus I confirm the bug which probably exists due to improper handling of
link creation during upgrades, thus probably will be present in
etch shipped to people upgrading from sarge.

I don't want to play ping pong reopening it but I want to confirm
once again that there is an issue. have a good one

I'm running Debian on a good ol' regular PC... And experiencing the same
problem. Some days it's worse than others, haven't figured out what the cause
is, though.

However, cutting back a bit on the apt repositories seemed to help, so it seems
to be linked either to cache size, or some dodgy archive lists.

At any rate, I have a script that updates the package lists, and then does a
dselect-upgrade in download-only mode. I just added the rm command to the
start of the script, so it kills the *.bin files, and then goes its regular
nightly activities.

Bug#404611: Could easily be fixed in mozilla-imagezoom

2006-12-27 Thread Jan Niehusmann
(Cc: to the imagezoom maintainers)

I did a short investigation on this bug:

It's caused by the fact that mozilla-imagezoom does contain a file (or,
more correctly, a symlink) at
usr/lib/iceweasel/defaults/pref/imagezoom-defaults.js

This makes mozilla-imagezoom own the directory
usr/lib/iceweasel/defaults, which is already owned by iceweasel. This
becomes a problem now, as usr/lib/iceweasel/defaults is not really a
directory but a symlink to usr/share/iceweasel/defaults. Therefore, an
upgrade of iceweasel can't renew this symlink and installation fails.

An easy workaround, and probably also the correct solution, would be
mozilla-imagezoom to install its file in
/usr/share/iceweasel/defaults/... instead of /usr/lib/...

The fix is trivial and mozilla-imagezoom, as a Architecture: all
package, can be much more easily changed than iceweasel.

One thing to be checked is if other mozilla-based packages are affected
as well. It seems like for iceape the same change is necessary, while
icedove contains a real directory in /usr/lib/icedove/defaults. This
looks a little bit inconsistent, but is probably difficult to change now.

The problem is that /usr/share/firefox usually is a directory (at
least in the packages dwww and firefox), while iceweasel contains a
symlink /usr/share/firefox:

$ dpkg --contents iceweasel_2.0.0.1+dfsg-1_i386.deb | grep -i usr/share/firefox
lrwxrwxrwx root/root  0 2006-12-26 07:30 ./usr/share/firefox -> iceweasel

Maybe iceweasel should conflict old/current versions of dwww, if it
changes /usr/share/firefox from a directory to a symlink?

At least this isn't a bug in dwww 1.10.0, because its behavior in etch
is correct since firefox 1.5.dfsg+1.5.0.7-2 is part of etch and this
package contains /usr/share/firefox as a directory, not as a symlink.

a broken dsdt is a vendor fault.

for sarge the affected range was across all boxes,
here this affects 2 specific hp laptop models.

again i'm highly skeptic about the patch quality.
the semantics of yield() changed fundamentally from 2.4 to 2.6.
afaik only b0rked code in 2.6 needs yield().

Bug#400675: Get openVZ into Etch

2006-12-27 Thread Konstantin Seiler
Hi Ola!
First of all thanks for updating the openVZ-kernelpatch. I tried it yesterday
and it worked without problems.

Unfortunately the "kernel-patch-openvz"-Package is stuck in unstable due to a
freeze in Etch. If you haven't done that already, could you please contact
the release-team asap to push your update into testing. Otherwise it might
not get released with Etch.

Cheers,
Konstantin

Thanks for the report. However, i leave this bug open until the s390 buildd is

and a corrected s390 binary has been uploaded.

This looks like #402568 and should be fixed in 5.2.3-5.

This looks like the problem: fdisk shouldn't be providing a NULL address

I'd say the correct behavior is to just keep the message intact.
