I have no idea what you mean by "potential" FTBFS. This package builds fine
under both etch and sid.

While polishing the packaging of another software, I noticed that recent
versions of either CDBS, dh_python or dh_pysupport require an environment
variable called DEB_PYTHON_SYSTEM in debian/rules.

I have already patched debian/control and debian/rules to fix this (upload

A good thought. Unfortunately, the date & time are correct on this

Bug#404733: Conflicts between symbolic links and directories

2006-12-30 Thread Ben Hutchings
Debian bug #404733 shows a case where installation of a package fails
because it contains a symbolic link with the same path as a directory
included in an installed package. I think this is the expected
behaviour. However, installation of this package worked for me in a
similar situation, and presumably has for other users. Has there been
any deliberate change in dpkg that would explain why this does work in
some cases or versions?

Ben.

Bug#405006: libgphoto2: mistake in udev rules gives permissions to non-gphoto2 devices

The administrator is encouraged to add to this group users that need to
access cameras and similar devices. I believe this qualifies as a security
risk: users that had no access to some resources now can access them,
without the administrator knowing. The "grave" qualification is probably
exaggerated, but I was under the impression that all security bugs should
have it; maybe I was wrong; if so I am sorry.

It concerns the raw USB devices, in /dev/bus/usb/, used by libusb for
userland drivers. At the time where it was in /prob/bus/usb/, I believe only
devices with no kernel driver were available there, but it seems no longer
the case. In your example, you could probably have full access to the disk
using a userland mass-storage driver (there is such a thing floating around
on the web).

Ok, that is approximately what I expected, although I'm a bit
confused.

Could you (or someone) get back to the state where it's broken, and
run

  ulimit -c unlimited
  rm ~/.gstreamer-0.10/registry.powerpc.xml
  gst-launch-0.10

And let it crash. Then run:

  gdb gst-launch-0.10 core

and do a backtrace. (The core file might have a pid suffix.)

Bug#405006: libgphoto2: mistake in udev rules gives permissions to non-gphoto2 devices

Isn't the plugdev group empty by default? This is obviously a bug, but I'm
not sure it qualifies as a grave security bug.

For that matter, with which devices are you seeing this problem? After
upgrading to this version of libgphoto2-2, plugging in a USB hard drive
still gives me:

brw-rw 1 root disk 8, 0 2006-12-30 15:30 /dev/sda
brw-rw 1 root disk 8, 1 2006-12-30 15:30 /dev/sda1

What class of USB devices are ending up under group plugdev that shouldn't?

Though this statement is true, that is not release critical *yet* -
because no such package has entered Debian yet.

Of course, this sounds like a worthwhile goal for the Lenny release
cycle to make such potential future RC bugs go away, but - currently, it
is not release critical.

As recently noted, this was already done. The --x11r7-layout option to

drop that argument at any time.

That's a completely implausible stacktrace, too, so I think you're
right. Things to try at this point:

1) Make absolutely sure that the Boost libraries are compiled with the
same version of GCC as Monotone itself. This is the #1 cause of
inexplicable segfaults.

2) Run the crashing command under valgrind - valgrind does support PPC
now, I believe - and get us a backtrace from that.

any file on the system (any root writable file) by setting NSPR's
environment variables to log to that file, and then running a setuid root
program linked with NSPR."

I couldn't find any setuid binary in Debian that links against libnspr but
there is "camel-lock-helper-1.2" in evolution-data-server which is setgid mail.
AFAICS the above argument works also with setgid binaries. So this might allow
to overwrite other people's mail if evolution-data-server is installed.

The fix in [1] seems to only fix the setuid case.

I am not sure whether this bug should be RC. Feel free to downgrade if you don't
think so.

Bug#404888: glib destabilization and ways forward

This is an advertised interface for glib. If you want to change that,
it requires an soname bump.

As upstream gnucash has pointed out, in the message I just forwarded,
the previously advertised interface *did* make spaces legal in key
names.

As it turns out, if upstream gnucash is correct, this *is* a substantial
change to the *advertised interface* for the functions. Now you are
saying the functions must not even be used at all, and yet, you are
documenting them!

Please decide what you want the interface to be, and since clearly you
want something different from the previous one (whether prohibiting use
of key files or changing the syntax of keys) bump the soname.

On further consideration, I think changing debhelper is useful as well.

We have the following kind of packages:
- uses misc:depends: will get a versioned dependency on xfonts-utils,
works as good as now (except there is some dependency in getting stuff
  into testing, but well)
- depends on xfonts-utils but doesn't use misc:depends: This package
will be slightly broken when installed on a not fully upgraded
machine. In case xfonts-utils is changed in a way that on upgrade the
stuff is inserted in the right directory anyways, I don't mind about
the temporary breackage - especially as only affects half-broken
packages, and it doesn't happen in stable
- depends on xutils and doesn't use misc:depends: This package is broken
now and might fail to install on half-upgrades, and will be less
  broken later.

Cheers,
Andi

Bug#385364: gnome-tasksel: the GUI isn't listing the tasks.

2006-12-30 Thread Kęstutis Biliūnas
Tags: patch
thanks

Hi Gustavo,

This patch (actually not patch, but the .tar.gz file) do not solve all
problems of the using GtkTreeView widget, but it is my attempt to
help you to fix this bug. I don't fully understand and I can't remember
how this program worked and how looked like on 'stable'. If you
could send me such a screenshot where could be seen the "package_list"
and the "task_tree" with the toggled checkbox, I would try to continue
this work and try to get the same result with the GtkTreeView widget
of Gtk+ version 2.0.

Best regards,

It is no regression over the prior situation and was never reported in
the BTS, even though GKeyFile was "broken" (ie too liberal when taking
input from application) in this way for some time.

We don't know which other applications may rely on gkeyfile without
input checking. I don't want to find out at this point of the release
cycle, so this is not an option.

>> 2) Decide that glib can migrate into testing, with the particular change

I would prefer to leave the new input validation routines in place, but
replace all current "return FAIL" in the new g_key_file_is_group_name
and g_key_file_is_key_name function with g_warning("'%s' is not a valid
GKeyFile key/group name", bla) and only do a return FAIL if the old
condition (string is empty) was met. Of course, reverting to the old
version would also be an option.

As xfonts-utils doesn't exist in sarge, this is no longer RC-buggy then.

I agree on this.

I don't think we're at the right moment now to revert the debhelper
change - otherwise, we need to insert a versioned dependency on the new
xfonts-utils for the reverted debhelper script.

Why does it need to be versioned? There has not been any version of
xfonts-utils that did not support --x11r7-layout.

Yes that would be better then I didnt do this cause the code
doesnt really need dinamically allocated buffers. Anyway the
patch should just show all the other problems that exist in
the code but I would suggest a documentation of secure
programming and a complete rewrite of the code to the
upstream author. Also the substitution of SED and GREP via
the makefile in the c-files and then calling system() is
really ugly.
Kind regards, happy new year

Please note that this will probably not work with the Hurd. This system
tries to avoid all useless limitations and _POSIX_PATH_MAX is one of
these. The proper solution is to create the buffers dynamically ...

Once again, genisoimage package is missing the mkzftree binary (last time
it was in the mkisofs package, see #387927).
The attached patch fixes the issue.
I didn't set this bug severity to RC because I was not sure, but I think
it's important to get it fixed for etch.

Then they must stop using GKeyFile. There is no way that they will get
this supported by GLib developers.

That leaves us with the silent data loss that can happen when using
broken key names (like, well, gnucash does). Whether this is or not a RC
issue, I'll let the release team decide.

Same answer. At least we can get the other bug fixes.

This is the sanest solution because this is the one that gets us with
the lesser number of bugs.

Bug#366365: libcvsservice0 should only recommend cvs (not depend)

2006-12-30 Thread Ernest ter Kuile
Package: libcvsservice0
Version: 4:3.5.5-3
Followup-For: Bug #366365

libcvsservice0 is depended upon by many packages which link it in, even though
cvs functionality is not needed nor wanted. quanta is one such package.
Because libcvsservice0 depends on cvs, it must be installed as wel.

But cvs is not actually used by libcvsservice0 until it is needed, and it will
function perfectly (doing nothing) without it. In fact Quanta did complain
during startup, but only it because cervesia wasn't installed (again, I don't
need it), not because cvs wasn't.

The situation where a library is depended upon which itself recommand the
package it actually use happen many times within debian, and so can be relied
upon to be accepted by all. One example is Kerberos, an other is mysql. Both
have runtimes libs which are often installed because of some dependancy even
though neither kerberos nor mysql is installed.

please change dependancy for cvs to recommand instead of depend.

thank you.

Bug#380396: using update-fonts-dir --x11r7-layout in maintainer scripts breaks partial upgrades

2006-12-30 Thread Christoph Berg
Hi,

while looking at #380396, I noted the breakage is actually in an
unfortunate combination of update-fonts-dir (in xfonts-utils)
requiring the --x11r7-layout option and debhelper unconditionally
putting it in generated postinst/postrm files (dh_installxfonts).

Adding ${misc:Depends} adds the (previously missing) dependency on
xfonts-utils, but does not make it versioned.

postinst:
# Automatically added by dh_installxfonts
if which update-fonts-dir >/dev/null 2>&1; then
update-fonts-dir --x11r7-layout misc;update-fonts-alias misc
fi
# End automatically added section

postrm:
# Automatically added by dh_installxfonts
if [ -x "`which update-fonts-dir 2>/dev/null`" ]; then
update-fonts-dir --x11r7-layout misc;update-fonts-alias misc
fi
# End automatically added section

I believe the fix is to make --x11r7-layout the default (#363005) and
at the same time revert the debhelper change (#362820). All xfonts
using debhelper would then need (bin?)nmus to get maintainer scripts
without --x11r7-layout.

Package: wordtrans
Version: 1.1pre14-2
Severity: serious

the package build-depends on g++-3.4 or g++-4.0, which is not
available on hppa. Please build using g++-4.1.

If the package cannot be built using g++-4.1, please make sure that a
bug report is filed against the g++-4.1 package.

Is 3.4 really needed on arm and m68k?

Bug#403426: kernel corrupts LUKS partition header on arm

Strange. I haven't changed cryptsetup but now I don't get this
message anymore. I simply get:

foobar:~# cryptsetup luksOpen /dev/sdb2 x
Enter LUKS passphrase:
Enter LUKS passphrase:
Enter LUKS passphrase:
Command failed: No key available with this passphrase.

But I'm sure I've typed the passphrase correctly, and it works on my
x86 box (on which I created the LUKS partition).

This works:

foobar:~# cat map

Your logs are strange.
Can you send me the /etc/init.d/pcscd file you are using?

Yes. But this should have been solved with bug #392357

I will try to improve the init script post etch.

Subject: amavis-ng: Fails to start with perl errors

After an upgrade, amavis started spewing a lot of emergency errors and
stoped working (bringing down all mail delivery with it).
I use the Courier module and it started complaining about two things:

These errors, of course, repeated a lot.

I imagine this is something specifically wrong with the Courier module.

Cheers

I am using amavis-ng in SMTP daemon mode with postfix. I have set it up
with a timeout value so amavis-ng doesn't get tell postfix that it has
it until it is done processing. The problem is if a message has a
problem being re-injected it drops the connection with the first side.
As it should a copy is saved the to problem directory. However the
message also remains in the queue. The next time the queue is processed
the message will be tried again. However as their is a problem with the
message it will again be copied to the problems directory and again left
in the queue. Obviously as the message is always going to fail it should
not be left in the queue to fail again. A single notification to the
administrator should be enough. What should be done IMO is once the
message has a problem it should be dropped from the queue and have a
copy saved as a message is that is quaratinied. This way a single copy
is saved that the administrator can deal with an re-inject as
neccessary, and the system does not continue to try to deliver the same
message over and over having it fail everytime. Adding a single line to
the SMTP.pm file allows this to happen. I'm not sure of the exact line
number but it is around 400-410 (at least on the version on my system).
The necessary line is shown below.

   # First try to put the message into the problems directory.
   if (AMAVIS->quarantine_problem_message($args)) {
+ $self->drop_message($args);
 return 1;
   }
   # If that fails, reject the message

Hi!

I use amavis-ng, postfix and the virus scanners f-prot, clamscan and
antivir processing mails during delivery. Since the update to amavis-ng
0.1.6.6.-1 yesterday I have received numerous error messages, and all
the messages have been frozen.

amavis-ng receives the mails postfix sends and the virus scanners go
through the mails. However, The delivery back to postfix fails.

Bug#391404: libapache2-modxslt: conflicts with modxslt-tools

2006-12-30 Thread Sergei Golovan
tags 391404 + patch
thanks

Hi!

I would like to send a patch, which fixes this bug. It's a minimal patch,
which simply removes manual pages from libapache2-modxslt binary package.

It's a part of my new maintainer application, so it looks like non-maintainer
upload. If you will use this patch, you may update changelog as you wish.

I don't think you want to install any manpage in libmodxslt0, as that
would make it conflict with a future libmodxslt1. The manpage should be
in libmodxslt0-dev, IMHO.

Bug#405014: planner: potential FTBFS since newest python-support

2006-12-30 Thread Martin-Éric Racine
Package: planner
Version: 0.14.2-1
Severity: serious
Justification: no longer builds from source

-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-

While polishing the packaging of another software, I noticed that recent
versions of either CDBS, dh_python or dh_pysupport require an environment
variable called DEB_PYTHON_SYSTEM in debian/rules.

I have already patched debian/control and debian/rules to fix this (upload
pending); this report just files the existence of this potential FTBFS bug.

Bug#382030:

2006-12-30 Thread Tim Cutts
I've seen SIGPIPE from cfexecd from time to time, but not from
cfservd. It's usually, in my experience, and from what I've seen on
the cfengine mailing list, due to configuration errors. I agree that
a configuration error should not cause the daemon to crash, and it's
therefore a bug, but you should switch on the runtime debugging with -
d2 as a command line option to cfservd, which should help you
discover what's going on (and the same option will help the second
poster here, whose problem sounds like a different one to me, just
use it on cfagent rather than cfservd)

I think SIGPIPE tends to happen when cfengine is spawning a task to
do something, but a configuration error causes that subtask to exit
unexpectedly.

Bug#380396: Happens here, too.... here is the message in English

2006-12-30 Thread Andreas Barth
* Anthony DeRobertis ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) [061003 08:03]:
> Just hit this in a Sarge + Backports -> Etch upgrade:
>
> Setting up xfonts-cmex-big5p (0.1-5.1) ...
> usage error: unrecognized option
> Usage: update-fonts-dir DIRECTORY ...
>update-fonts-dir { -h | --help }

I *think* this comes from the fact that postinst calls:
# Automatically added by dh_installxfonts
if which update-fonts-dir >/dev/null 2>&1; then
update-fonts-dir --x11r7-layout misc;update-fonts-alias misc
fi
# End automatically added section

However, the package depends on xutils, which doesn't necessarily have
the new update-fonts-dir. Solution: Fix the dependency.

Cheers,
Andi

Bug#405012: libwmf: Dependencies problem on experimental

2006-12-30 Thread Nanomad

Package: libwmf
Version: 0.2.8.4-2
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

*** Please type your report below this line ***
As of Sat 30 Dic 2006 this package is not installable on debian
experimental due to dependancies problem (libgtk2.0-0 (=2.10.6-4) conflicts with
libwmf0.2-7 (<=0.2.8.4-2))

Plese note that this also breaks gimp (and possibily other stuff which
depends on libwmf0.2-7 (>=0.2.8.4-2))

How to fix: just bump the revision to -3. Gimp works for me if I
do so. No errors reported by make

Bug#391404: NMU uploaded

Hi,

I uploaded an NMU of your package. The real issue was BTW that make
install installed the man pages in libapache2-modxslt, and dh_installman
installed them somewhere else.

Please see this as help to get the package into a releaseable condition for
etch.

Please find the used diff below.

Cheers,

Are you sure we don't see any device mapper problems here? You might
just go over to a box where LUKS works (when the LUKS partition does
not contain anything security relevant to you), and do

dmsetup table mappingname > dm-table-file

open it up, and find the 7th entry that says something like x:y
(major:minor device number of your underlaying device). Replace this
by your correct device path on the arm box, copy that file over to arm
and set it up as

dmsetup create mappingname dm-table-file

If that does not work, we are seeing a dm-crypt layer problem here.

> Enter LUKS passphrase:

I just commited a patch that prevents password retrying with I/O
errors.

After upgrading to Etch, immediately after the freeze started, I needed to
access this ATARI disk to fetch old files. While the ext2 partions can be
accessed, the FAT partitions no longer can. As a test, I tried listing the
partition table, which gave me this:

Removing this file doesn't change the behaviour.
However, if I remove libgstlibvisual.so, I get the following while
launching the first command with LANG=C:

0:00:01.701811000 16833 0x1001ae50 INFO GST_PIPELINE

ERROR: pipeline could not be constructed: empty pipeline not allowed.

Amazingly, if I restore the file I continue to get the same error
(removing ~/.gstreamer-0.10/registry.powerpc.xml every time).

Bug#405006: libgphoto2: mistake in udev rules gives permissions to non-gphoto2 devices

2006-12-30 Thread Nicolas George
Package: libgphoto2-2
Version: 2.2.1-12
Severity: grave
Tags: security

In /etc/udev/libgphoto2_generic_ptp_support.rules, there is the following
rule:

ACTION=="add", SUBSYSTEM=="usb_device", ENV{INTERFACE}="6/1/1", \
  PROGRAM="/bin/sh -c 'K=%k; K=$${K#usbdev}; printf bus/usb/%%03i/%%03i
$${K.*} $${K#*.}'", \
  NAME="%c", MODE="0660", GROUP="plugdev"

The single = sign after ENV{INTERFACE} means that the INTERFACE environment
variable is set, not queried. The result is that all USB devices, and not
only the PTP ones, are set to the plugdev group, thus giving some users
access to devices they should not have access to.

Suggested fix: put two equals signs

Regards,

Support for module-assistant isn't release-critical by any means.

And I can't reproduce this error.

If the module source is only needed for older kernels, as mentioned, then
there's no reason it /needs/ to be removed from etch; and the other
userspace packages from this source package are certainly useful. So I'm
downgrading this bug.

Thanks,

Now try:

   rm ~/.gstreamer-0.10/registry.*.xml
   gdb -args gst-launch-0.10 --gst-disable-registry-fork

and give gdb the command 'run'. GDB will stop once with a SIGILL in
the function 'test_altivec()' called by 'oil_cpu_fault_try()'. Use
the command 'c' to continue when this happens (since it's not a
problem). It should stop again with a SIGILL. Please capture the
backtrace at this point and attach it to the bug.

Just in case I forgot about some other CPU detection code, please
enter 'c' again. It should say something like "Process Terminated,
killed by signal". If it doesn't, it will probably continue along
until it hits another SIGILL, at which point you should create a
second backtrace.

As an off the cuff guess, it's probably due to the ffmpeg plugin,
/usr/lib/gstreamer-0.10/libgstffmpeg.so. You could attempt removing
that to see if it starts working. (The test command above is bogus
and will print an error, but it's not supposed to crash.)

Bug#403426: [Pkg-cryptsetup-devel] Bug#403426: kernel corrupts LUKS partition header on arm

It still doesn't work on ARM, but with SVN (or
03_no_header_conv.dpatch which was taken from SVN) it no longer
corrupts the LUKS header, so once this patch is applied this bug can
be downgraded to important.
