Ok, this bug is for discussing customisation now. For the boot problem,
please use the newly created one (Jonny, please answer my question about
boot failure there).

But that is an upstream file. Do you think it's feasible to add a variable that
the upstream scripts don't use?

Also, after thinking about it, I'm concerned that if we allow disabling autorun
of update-grub, we won't be able to support changes in the grub.cfg
specification sanely (e.g. users will update grub without updating grub.cfg
and break their systems). Also, we will receive less input from new features
that *are* intended to be default, and so have less chances to fix them if
they're buggy (like here). And note that users are already able to add their
custom stuff via /etc/grub.d, just not remove the base lines.

I propose that we add a variable to select terminal, so that user can disable
this feature altogether if he wants. Jonny, does that work for you?

This patch is applied now for some time (originally taken from the
Fedora branch); the binutils from the trunk doesn't accept this code
anymore.

Package: mount
Version: 2.12r-19
Severity: grave
Justification: mount needs libdevmapper1.02 to run, which is not in depends

Hi,

mount does not work on new installs of Sid -- since it depends
 on a library runtime that is no longer in Sid, and the dependency
 relationship is underspecified. Observer the following demonstration
 using debootstrap.

Running:
,
| debootstrap --resolve-deps --exclude=hwclock --include=selinux-utils \
|   --verbose sid ./mounted/ http://http.us.debian.org/debian
| Fails with:
|  ...
| I: Retrieving libdb4.4

| I: Extracting liblocale-gettext-perl...
|   ...
| I: Extracting zlib1g...
| W: Failure trying to run: chroot /scratch/sandbox/strict/mounted mount
|-t proc proc /proc
`

The reason is:
,
| __>  chroot /scratch/sandbox/strict/mounted mount -t proc proc /proc
| mount: error while loading shared libraries: libdevmapper.so.1.02:
|cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

mounted/lib/libdevmapper.so.1.02.1
`

So, somehow, mount's dependency on libdevmapper is
 missing. libdevmapper is not essential, so the dependency should be
 there, no?

`

So, libdevmapper1.02 no longer lives in Sid, but mount seems to
 depend on it.

Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created

Since you only requested a single operation it is extremely likely that
the package is simply not installable and a bug report against

Current Sarge version is 0.10.10-2sarge9; which depends on
ethereal-common 0.10.10-2sarge9.

Those versions fix several security issues, so you should update.

Unfortunately the package has never really been updated for Etch and is
therefore currently unused by Debian installer. It is certain that some
of its functionality is now correctly handled by the packages it helped
configure for Sarge.

IMO localization-config should not be included in Etch. This BR is to
prevent it from migrating.

Release Managers: please hint l-c for removal from Etch.

 .
   * Is now working with the current debian-installer. (Closes: #402566)
   * Add conffiles.d/common/copyfile.pl found in version 0.116, to get
 sarge/fontconfig working.
   * Map KDE (kdebase) version 3.5.5a.dfsg.1-6 to etch.
   * Use 'in-target' in the udeb.
   * Remove obsolete base-config fragments. Leaving the debconf
 tempates and translations for now, in case we will need them for a
 d-i menu entry.
   * Drop cdebconf-udeb from the udebs dependency, to make it easier to
 get debian-cd to include it on CD and DVD images.
   * Improve usage information printed by the script.
   * Update the build rule to make sure the udeb scripts are executable.
   * Make sure /usr/share/debconf/confmodule is sources in the udeb
 scripts using debconf.
   * Fix udeb scripts to pass $LOCALE to the worker scripts.
   * Fix typos in conffiles.d/x-kbd.preinst.
   * Add myself as uploader with maintainers approval.

Bug#422985: openssh: fails to build

2007-05-09 Thread Jean-Christophe Dubacq
Package: openssh
Version: 1:4.3p2-10
Severity: serious
Justification: no longer builds from source

Hello,

openssh does not build from source any more on my building environment
(sid, unstable).

Relevant info: in configure.log:

-lgssapi_krb5 -lkrb5
-lk5crypto -lcom_err -lkeyutils -lresolv -ldl >&5
/usr/bin/ld: cannot find -lkeyutils
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status

While building:
ranlib libssh.a
gcc -o ssh ssh.o readconf.o clientloop.o sshtty.o sshconnect.o
sshconnect1.o sshconnect2.o -L. -Lopenbsd-compat/  -lssh

After manually installing libkeyutils-dev, compilation works ok.

I had done exactly that before getting back to the package's
current approach, except the last step. As a result, libxul-0d
was pulled in as extra dependency.

So, what I missed seemed to be the last step.
But as you said below:

The latter would be temporary, until I
fix the xulrunner-plugin.pc file back (which has a dependency on
xulrunner-xpcom because of #413964, which was better to fix in xulrunner
than on its reverse dependencies).

That means, we had better wait for that bug to be fixed before
making further change..

Bug#356853: Relicensing the ae package under the LPPL

2007-05-09 Thread Lars Engebretsen

Thanks for doing all this work! I have now uploaded the updated package to CTAN.

   /Lars

2007/4/20, Florent Rougon <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>:

Dear Lars,

Please let me apologize for taking so much time to get back to you. I
have now prepared a tarball[1] of the ae package relicensed under the LaTeX
Project Public License, as we discussed in September and October 2006.

What I have done precisely is the following:

  - I added a file called MANIFEST that contains the list of files the
ae package consists of. This list of files is what defines "the
Work" when applying the LaTeX Project Public License to the ae
package.

This list was obtained with the following command (typed from the
base directory of the ae package):

  find . -type f | sed -e '[EMAIL PROTECTED]/@@'

If you add or remove any file from the distribution, you should
update the list in MANIFEST.

  - I replaced the text of the GNU GPL in the file COPYING with the text
of the current version of the LPPL (version 1.3c, 2006-05-20).

  - In README, I added the following paragraph:

  Licensing terms
  ~~~
  This work is distributed under the conditions of the LaTeX Project Public
  License, either version 1.3 or (at your option) any later version. Please
  refer to the file COPYING for details.
I also changed your (presumably old) address from [EMAIL PROTECTED]
to [EMAIL PROTECTED], since it seems to be the correct way to
reach you these days. Finally, I updated the date at the end of
README to 2007-04-20.
  - In the src and tex directories, I added a copyright notice and
licensing statement as follows, at the beginning of every
non-trivial file:
  %% ae.sty
  %% Copyright 1997-2001 Rolf Niepraschk, Gilbert Ritschard, Lars Engebretsen
  %
  % This work may be distributed and/or modified under the
  % conditions of the LaTeX Project Public License, either version 1.3
  % of this license or (at your option) any later version.
  % The latest version of this license is in
  %   http://www.latex-project.org/lppl.txt
  % and version 1.3 or later is part of all distributions of LaTeX
  % version 2005/12/01 or later.
  %
  % This work has the LPPL maintenance status `maintained'.
  %
  % The Current Maintainer of this work is Lars Engebretsen.
  %
  % This work consists of all files listed in MANIFEST.
  %
As you can see, these copyright notices state the names of the
copyright holders and the years where "the work was authored and/or
last substantially modified" (quoting the LPPL).
Of course, I don't have enough information to fill this accurately
for every file of the ae package. I did my best to put something
sensible, using the information in each file (declarations in
\author commands, for instance), in the README and, when I couldn't
find any date for a given file, using its date as distributed in the
ae.zip I downloaded from CTAN. When I couldn't find any information
on the copyright holders for a given file, I assumed you were the
only copyright holder.
If you can correct some of these copyright notices, please do so
(the copyright notice is the line that says
"Copyright  ").
Note: as far as I know, an author and a year in a copyright notice
  must be added only if the modifications are copyrightable
  (non-trivial).
  - I didn't modify any file in the tfm and vf directories, because:
  (1) it seems they are all generated from files in tex and src;
  (2) they are in binary format and maybe cannot even embed a
  copyright notice and licensing statement.
  - I think some files in the src directory were generated with fontinst
(.mtx files) but I added the copyright notice and licensing
statement anyway. Maybe for such files, the copyright attribution
should go to the fontinst authors, I'm not sure: the case of
generated files is a bit complicated. I'd say that, how they should
be licensed depends on the licensing details of fontinst and where
the "creative parts" in these files comes from (either from
fontinst, or from you input files, or from both). Hmmmpf...
  - I made sure all files have decent Unix permissions before creating
the .zip file.
I did *not* bump any version number nor change any date except the date
at the end of the README file. I think it's your call to decide whether
you think this relicensing should change the ae version number.
Personally, I think it would be clearer to release the new package as
version 1.4a, but since no functionality changed since version 1.4, it's
probably not mandatory.
Again, thank you very much for your cooperation. I also want to thank
again the other copyright holders who gave their permission promptly for
this relicensing.
Please upload the new .zip file to CTAN so that we can eventually have a
nice licensing of ae. Feel free to ask me if you have any question.
Regards,
Also note that this patch is applied since version 4.1.1ds2-30, and that
 gcc-4.1 with this patch has never been build on arm in *Debian*.
It really looks like the binutils in Debian has never supported that.
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable
Hi Dirk,
I wanted to use rggobi on a fresh Etch install, but it does not work out
of the box:
> library(rggobi)
Warning message:
Your rggobi (2.1.4-2) is newer than your ggobi version (2.1.4). Please try to
update your ggobi. in: .check_versions()
The problem seems trivial, but I do not have enough knowledge of R
internals to look for a fix. Do you think that a revised package could
be prepared for Etch?
Have a nice day,
Hi Dirk,
I am so sorry for waking you up with a grave bug which was not one. I
took the warning too seriously and thought that R actually refused to
load rggobi.
bzr-builddeb is currently uninstallable in unstable.
The package currently includes a dependency of "bzr (<< 0.15)" yet it
works fine when I removed this requirement and recompiled in order to use
0.15.
Including fakeroot and therefore pbuilder which uses it.  In other
words, building in a chroot with the standard setup used by probably
most developers is now impossible.
Bug#423010: vncserver not working at all
2007-05-09 Thread Folkert van Heusden
Package: vncserver
Version: 3.3.7-14
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable
When vncserver is invoked, it says it starts a new session on
host:number but in fact nothing is listening.
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ vncserver -geometry 1024x768
New 'X' desktop is belle:1
Starting applications specified in /etc/X11/Xsession
so it seems it doesn't work. Maybe it needs extra packages which are not
included in the dependencies?
openssh doesn't use keyutils itself at all directly; this library
dependency was generated by krb5-config. I think libkrb5-dev should
depend on libkeyutils-dev, rather than all users of krb5-config having
to build-depend on it.
Well, on this specific case there's no problem since this would only
be use by Debian's postinst. See bellow...
Yes, that makes sense and I agree that the cons can be bigger then the pros.
While I ack that we ought to offer this option I also think we need to
solve the user bug or at least identify the real reason behind it to
start allowing to disable it.
Bug#423014: console's last three lines become inaccessible once xdm start up
2007-05-09 Thread Edward Welbourne
Package: xdm
Version: 1:1.1.4-3
Severity: critical
Tags: security
Justification: breaks unrelated software
When I start up xdm, the console starts to imagine that there are
three more lines available than actually exist.  The console actually
has 25 lines; but the console ttys think it has 28 lines.  The resize
command reports LINES=28.  Even if I export LINES=25 and then fire up
screen, my shell within screen has LINES=28.
This means that I can't see the last three lines of output, once
output gets to the bottom of the screen; it means that the emacs
minibuffer and the aptitude dialog area are invisible; these don't
even scroll into view after it's too late.  This makes both emacs and
aptitude almost impossible to use (hence: breaks unrelated software)
and makes it almost impossible for root to do anything (hence:
critical) if I follow the cautious policy of never letting root do
anything in a window under X.  The console becomes extremely difficult
(and dangerous - see below) to use.
It means that, when dpkg is installing a package, I'm apt to be asked
some question I can't see and given a prompt I can't see and left
waiting for the program to do something, so I end up hitting return
and getting whatever the default was for the question I never saw
being asked (on account of this last, I have added "security" as a
tag); after that, dpkg begins producing more output and the entire
dialog in which I have just played my blind part scrolls into view.
Obviously, dpkg is not the only software (reportbug springs to mind)
that relies on me to respond to prompts, after producing enough output
that it's apt to be in the last three lines of the screen; nor is dpkg
the only one for which random answers to unseen prompts may result in
security-relevant disasters.
The problem is *not* that the screen is mis-sized; if I shrink
vertical on the screen, I still don't see the missing lines, though
the lines I do see now fit into a smaller vertical span on my screen.
In any case, if I suppress xdm's start-up (by adding an early exit 0
to /etc/init.d/xdm) I see normal console behaviour.  It would not,
however, surprise me if the problem is really with something else (xdm
is merely triggering it); there may be some package doing something
clever with the frame-buffer (bug I don't have a logo visible on
screen).  The problem *may* (but I'd be surprised) be related to the
fact that my xorg.conf Display sections say
Modes   "1280x1024" "1152x864" "1024x768" "832x624" "800x600" "720x400"
"640x480" "1600x1200"
with the highest-resolution last (when I put it first, xdm failed to
start up, albeit taking three tries at it before giving up; moving it
to the end lets xdm start, after which Ctrl+Alt+keypad(-) suffices to
get me to the highest resolution; leaving it on the default doesn't
help the console, though).
About three months ago, I saw this same problem, tried to find its
cause, gave up and then was surprised, upon running the euro-test
script (which failed) to find the problem had gone away.  Today I
moved desks, so re-booted (for the first time since the power outage
three months ago - I love stable software ;-); and euro-test now
passes, without fixing this problem.  The fact that euro-test used to
be able to fix it does imply that there must be some way to work
around the problem (I'd be delighted if anyone can identify what; I've
been carefully through euro-test without finding what it did that
solved the problem).  I tried /etc/init.d/console-screen.sh, invoked
the same way euro-test was doing so three months ago, but that wasn't
what was solving the problem.
This is strange, and shouldn't be, -v is just to make the tests verbose.
How are you trying to build the package?, as which user, what is the
environment, what the command you run?  Can you try with pbuilder?
im sorry to say that lucas has no images of the failed build chroots
available. However, you can easily reproduce this failure while building
ggz-gtk-games with pbuilder. At least for me it failed with the same
error on sid/amd64.
Jonny, we need more information about what failed on your system before we
can proceed.  If you don't have it we will have to close this bug, since
gfxterm seems to be working fine everywhere else.
This is most likely not related to xdm.  Does this happen as well when
you disable /etc/init.d/xdm and run "startx" instead?
Please send the output of /usr/share/bug/xserver-xorg-core/script 3>&1
Bug#422979: dpkg: update-alternatives doesn't create the symlink
2007-05-09 Thread Manoj Srivastava
Hi,
It is not just fakeroot.  debootstrap itself is broken, so you
 can't even get a new root file system.  debootstrap fails at:
,
| I: Configuring base-files...
| I: Configuring libblkid1...
| I: Configuring e2fsprogs...
| I: Configuring gzip...
| I: Configuring dpkg...
| I: Configuring mount...
| I: Configuring passwd...
| I: Configuring initscripts...
| I: Configuring base-files...
| I: Configuring base-files...
| W: Failure while configuring required packages.
`
chrooting into the dir, the error is that base-files postinst
 cannot find awk. mawk had indeed been configured earlier. So, while
 /etc/alternatives/awk exists, and points to mawk, there is no symlink
 /usr/bin/awk created.
Bug#422985: How to solve keyutils and libkrb5-dev
2007-05-09 Thread Sam Hartman
So, krb5-config spits out a dependency on keyutils, but libkrb5-dev
does not include it.
The problem is that really keyutils is an internal dependency.
Ideally, I'd prefer that krb5-config not spit this out.
The easy fix is for libkrb5-dev to depend on libkeyutils1-dev .
Is there a good way to do something more reasonable though ?
thanks
Thank you guys for hitting and reporting this issue. Apparently smth
changed with the build tools in sid since it was building fine with
pbuilder whenever I originally uploaded 1.0.28. Now I replicated the
issue with current pbuilder environment and 1.0.28-1. Also it doesn't FTBS for
etch
so no uploads necessary into updates there...
Actually I was about to upload fresh version (1.0.29) and that one seems
to don't have this FTBS issue, so the fresh upload will close this bug.
I have to test package a bit more before upload.
Cheers
Bug#423040: Source package contains non-free IETF RFC/I-D
2007-05-09 Thread Simon Josefsson
Severity: serious
Package: linux-2.6
Version: 2.6.20-3
User: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Usertags: nonfree-doc rfc
Hi!
This source package contains the following files from the
IETF under non-free license terms:
pkg linux-2.6 ver 2.6.20-3
  linux-2.6-2.6.20/Documentation/netlabel/draft-ietf-cipso-ipsecurity-01.txt
The license on RFC/I-Ds is not DFSG-free, see:
 * http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=199810
 * http://release.debian.org/removing-non-free-documentation
 * http://wiki.debian.org/NonFreeIETFDocuments
The etch release policy says binary and source packages must each be free:
 * http://release.debian.org/etch_rc_policy.txt
The severity is serious, because this violates the Debian policy:
 * http://www.debian.org/doc/debian-policy/ch-archive.html#s-dfsg
There are (at least) three ways to fix this problem.  In order of
preference:
1. Ask the author of the RFC to re-license the RFC under a free
   license.  A template for this e-mail request can be found at
   http://wiki.debian.org/NonFreeIETFDocuments
2. Remove the non-free material from the source, e.g., by re-packaging
   the upstream archive and adding 'dfsg' to the Debian package
   version name.
3. Move the package to non-free.
General discussions are kindly requested to take place on debian-legal
or debian-devel in the thread with Subject: "Non-free IETF RFC/I-Ds in
source packages".
Thanks,
Simon
The cause seems to be in schroot-listmounts, which tries to open
/dev/tty. This yields an epmty list of mounts when there is no
controling tty.
i'm using debuild -uc -us -B on a pure sid box used only for debian
development.
anyway the error was due to some problem loading libraries.  i didn't
wrote it down, so i'm trying to reproduce it again.  it might be from
ld, i'm still not sure. in the meanwhile libc6 has been updated...
surely it is not from git-core since i read it also in building curl
7.16.2. build of git-core was done using libcurl 7.15.5, the one in
testing/stable, so it should not be a fault of libcurl itself.
please keep the report open until i'm able to reassing to the right
package or close it. thank you.
Bug#418008: wacom-kernel-source: patch for the problem
2007-05-09 Thread Gerfried Fuchs
Package: wacom-kernel-source
Version: 0.7.4.1-5
Followup-For: Bug #418008
Hi!
 This bug affects the version in etch, too.  Here is a oneline fix for
the problem:
#v+
  if [ -d $ksrc/include ]; then
- kvers="`head -n 1 $ksrc/include/linux/version.h | cut -c 22- | rev |
cut -c 2- | rev`"
+ kvers="`cat $ksrc/include/config/kernel.release`"
  [ $kvers = `uname -r` ] || echo "Warning: kernel headers don't match
running $kernel version."
#v-
 Though, I'm not too sure if the source is able to properly support the
release kernel - it seems like it's able to support only up to 2.6.16
kernels, and the new release informations about 0.7.6-4 from upstream
supporting 2.6.17 and 2.6.18 does add to that feeling.
 Could you please upgrade to that new upstream release too?  I really
wonder why this wasn't possible prior to etch release.  :(
 So long,
Alfie
Severity: normal
  Hello,
  I've just updated gs-common which did swtch the handling of ps2pdf
to update-alternatives.
  gs-comomn.postinst does include the following lines, called under
the configure target:
update-alternatives --install /usr/bin/ps2pdf \
  ps2pdf /usr/bin/ps2pdf14 50
update-alternatives --install /usr/bin/ps2pdf \
  ps2pdf /usr/bin/ps2pdf12 30
update-alternatives --install /usr/bin/ps2pdf \
  ps2pdf /usr/bin/ps2pdf13 40
  Everything looks fine and update-alternatives seems happy.
9:53 [EMAIL PROTECTED] ~ /usr/sbin/update-alternatives --display ps2pdf
ps2pdf - status is auto.
 link currently points to /usr/bin/ps2pdf14
/usr/bin/ps2pdf14 - priority 50
/usr/bin/ps2pdf12 - priority 30
/usr/bin/ps2pdf13 - priority 40
Current `best' version is /usr/bin/ps2pdf14.
  However, as it appears that update-alternatives did not create the
symlink /usr/bin/ps2pdf -> /etc/alternatives/ps2pdf during the process,
ps2pdf simply does not work. Is it a problem in the recent
update-alternatives, or did the gs-common maintainer make a mistake ?
I supposed the former as dpkg was upgraded at the same time as gs-common,
and I've seen package with a more crude use of update-alternative work
properly.
  This report is somehow similar to #100135, but in this case, it
renders parts of gs-common unusable, so I preferred submitting a new
report.
  I hope this helps, and that I don't bother you for another's mistake.
  Cheers,
  Vincent Fourmond
Bug#423104: grub-pc not installing
I have a problem that looks similar to 422851, but the error is
slightly different, so I open a new report.
Could you please explain why you removed the manpage instead of using a
replace field as suggested, and why you uploaded in unstable instead of
etch-proposed-updates?
Cheers,
Package: gnat-4.1
Version: 4.1.1-22
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable (uninstallable)
Could you please upload GNAT 4.1.2 to unstable ASAP?  As it stands,
cpp-4.1's conflict with gnat-4.1 (<= 4.1.1-22) makes gnat-4.1
uninstallable on systems that don't still have suitably old GCC
installations.  Moreover, GCC's tight interpackage dependencies make
it impossible even to upgrade GCC's shared libraries while GNAT is
installed, blocking upgrades of anything built against them recently
(quite a few packages, as the issue affects pretty much everything
written in C++).
Thanks!
After some investigation, I tracked this problem down to an issue in
libcairo. See my report to upstream [1], upstream's reaction [2] and
upstream's mail to the cairo list reporting the same bug [3] and
including a reduced test-case (and a patch for a part of the issue).
Bug#421790: #421790: gcc-4.1: Dynamic symbol information missing in stripped libraries
2007-05-09 Thread Frans Pop
Just for your information.
Bastian Blank has implemented support for --hash-style=gnu in
readelf-mklibs [1] and will upload a new version of mklibs that solves
the build problem for the installer.
This change was apparently already pending for some time. Note that
according to Bastian this readelf-mklibs is not a real readelf.
Given the other issues resulting from the change, reverting it still seems
like a good option for now.
Cheers,
FJP
Bug#422909: Bourne shell assistance needed for Bug #422909
2007-05-09 Thread Roger Leigh
Hi folks,
Bug #422909 has resulted from a broken assumption in how the shell
would handle errors, and I'm unsure exactly how to do this correctly.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.  Given that this can in
some circumstances result in severe dataloss, I'd very much like to
get this right.
The actual problematic code is here:
http://svn.debian.org/wsvn/buildd-tools/trunk/schroot/bin/schroot/setup/10mount?op=file&rev=0&sc=0
  :
# Unmount all filesystem under specified location
# $1: mount base location
do_umount_all()
{
"$LIBEXEC_DIR/schroot-listmounts" -m "$1" |
while read mountloc; do
if [ "$AUTH_VERBOSITY" = "verbose" ]; then
echo "Unmounting $mountloc"
fi
umount "$mountloc" || exit 1
done || exit 1
}
The problem here is that if schroot-listmounts segfaults (the trigger
in this case) or returns an error, the script continues without any
indication of the fact, despite "set -e" being in effect.  In this bug
this results in a failure to umount a set of mounted filesystems, and
then an "rm -rf" taking out all the data further down the line.
A small testcase to demonstrate:
int
main (void)
{
  char *s = "segfault me";
  *s = 'p';
  return 0;
}
#!/bin/sh
set -e
# This SEGV goes unnoticed.
./segfault |
while read line; do
	echo "Line: $line"
done || exit 3
# This one is noticed.
./segfault
true
How can I rewrite the while loop securely (and preferably avoiding
tmpfiles), such that any bad exit status or failure will result in
immediate termination of the script with an error status?
Sorry if this is too basic for -devel, but I need to be sure it's
correct.
Many thanks,
Roger
Thank you for the bug report.
This problem appears because the lingoteach-gui package was developed at
the time of version 2.8.18 of the GTK+ library. Now we have the version
2.10.12 in the unstable.
I will try to fix this bug, if I will be capable to do so. But the
upstream has expressed his intention to do not continue development
and I am in doubt is it worth to waste the energy ant time on this
package.
Best wishes,
Bug#418350: fixed in pppconfig 2.3.16
2007-05-09 Thread John Hasler
> Could you please explain why you removed the manpage instead of using a
> replace field as suggested...
I don't see that pppconfig replaces manpages-fr.  In any case, If a French
man page for pppconfig is in manpages-fr why should I bloat pppconfig with
another?.  It's bloated enough with translations as it is.
> ...and why you uploaded in unstable instead of etch-proposed-updates?
Because I was not aware that I was expected to do otherwise.  Why would it
not be wanted in Unstable?  I will upload to etch-proposed-updates as well
if you wish.
Hi Dirk,
Wrap your calls of do_umount_all in if blocks:
if do_umount_all "$CHROOT_MOUNT_LOCATION"; then
Bug#422979: how to recover from this bug
2007-05-09 Thread Henrique de Moraes Holschuh
After upgrading to a non-broken dpkg, do this:
update-alternatives --all
And hold enter down until it goes over the entire list.
Shouldn't the dpkg package provide a script that does this without asking
the user?
Yes, I think that is the case.  There were some unfortunate timing
issues here.  Having a brand new kernel upload being the last thing
to happen before signing off on a release probably isn't exactly a
recipe for success in these circumstances.
>  Could you please upgrade to that new upstream release too?
That is the plan here, I hope to do that soon now.
> I really wonder why this wasn't possible prior to etch release.  :(
There were a few regressions, for a few users, in the releases following
this one.  With 20/20 hindsight, there probably was time to have slipped
in one more update of this one that might have been better than the one
we have, but each time I assessed that, the release seemed closer than
it actually was and I erred on the side of keeping it closer, and of not
breaking things for existing users.  This code is actively being merged
with the mainline kernel now so there is a pretty good chance that any
kernel this does not work with, does not need it anyhow.
If that stays true, I probably will drop the external module package
and only supply the userspace and xorg driver in future releases.
Cheers,
Ron
Bug#422655: fail2ban: leaving compiled python files after purging
2007-05-09 Thread Yaroslav Halchenko
Hi Bernd,
Here are my findings... to make story short -- the problem is in the
prerm script -- in the order of embedded autoscripts by debhelper tools.
I am not yet sure what is the best solution on how to get it under
control and I am too sleepy to trust my decision... now the best idea is
simply use sed or perl 1-2 liner to swap those sections places in
prerm... I should not change the order of commands in debian/rules and
should not duplicate them since it might lead to some undersired
outcomes and duplicate entries in postinst/prerm.  If you have a good
idea on how to handle it -- I am open for suggestions...
I am yet to look at your patch to extract useful ideas from it ;-)
I will fix fail2ban tomorrow or day after ;-) if you are bored you
are welcome to see my notes below:
pycentral is supposed to do all the job of byte-compiling and removing
trash in prerm for private scripts too (disregard strace calls
below -- it was there just so I didn't have to rerun to see what it
opened/closed):
,--
| > find /usr/share/fail2ban/ -iname *.pyc | xargs rm
| > find /usr/share/fail2ban/ -iname *.pyc | wc
pkginstall must be called in postinst and pkgremove in prerm, and
presumably they are, just grep
grep  pycentral /var/lib/dpkg/info/fail2ban.*
so the question is really WTF?
not thinking too long after I didn't find a proper way via DH_PYCENTRAL to make
it verbose, I just modified it to be verbose by default.
ok -- reinstalling works fine...
So, pycentral had in mind to remove all pyc files but unfortunately
didn't succeed for some reason... ufff... since you saw above that calling it
from cmdline cleaned up everything nicely -- no files were left behind. So that
is what is weird...
ok -- lets look closer and what got deinstalled (omitted cmdlines for the
size...)
Bug#423136: apt-move: built against experimental libgcc1 and libstdc++6
2007-05-09 Thread Kevin B. McCarty
Package: apt-move
Version: 4.2.27-1
Severity: serious
Hi,
apt-move is currently uninstallable in unstable (at least on i386) since
it depends on libgcc1 (>= 1:4.2-20070208) and libstdc++6 (>=
4.2-20070208).  Maybe it was by accident built against gcc 4.2 on the
maintainer's machine?  If so, a bin-NMU should suffice to fix it,
assuming it's bin-NMU safe.
regards,
