Bug#423956: passwd: upstream link in copyright file is dead
Package: passwd Version: 1:4.0.18.1-8 Severity: serious Justification: Policy 12.5 The upstream link in the copyright file does not exist: sh-3.1$ host ftp.pld.org.pl. Host ftp.pld.org.pl not found: 3(NXDOMAIN) However, this is required by Policy: In addition, the copyright file must say where the upstream sources (if any) were obtained. It should name the original authors of the package and the Debian maintainer(s) who were involved with its creation. I would have provided a patch[0], but I only became aware of this problem after a friend informed me that he couldn't find the upstream source. Therefore, I have no way to create a patch. Bug#369752: dependency issue
Erm, if it depends on the sun JRE, shouldn't it Depends: on the sun-java-jre? It seems ludicrous that I can satisfy the package's dependencies and still have an unusable program. As for reasons explained in another bug (which one?): Surely backporting the shellscript wrapper portion required to give the user a sane error message if they are using the wrong JRE does not depend on whatever other issues there is with 0.8.X... -- Jon Dowland -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#418098: Fwd: etch backport of rdesktop to fix segfaults on login
Hello! For the time till a fixed version makes it to etch I made a backport of the fixed unstable version and put it online at: http://people.teamix.org/~ms/backports/etch-backports/ -- Forwarded message -- Subject: etch backport of rdesktop to fix segfaults on login Date: Dienstag, 15. Mai 2007 10:34 From: Martin Steigerwald [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Hello, I created an etch backport of rdesktop in order to fix those nasty segaults described in bugs #418907, #418098, #418907. Did not have time to use pbuilder or such, but I made sure all required dev packages are at etch versions and it looks like it didn't pull in any additional dependencies. I confirmed together with a colleague that the backport indeed fixes the segfault. The packages passes lintian tests. Its only my second or third backport. You can find it at: http://people.teamix.org/~ms/backports/etch-backports/ As long as that fixed rdesktop version has not made it to debian etch it IMHO is a quite good idea to provide a fixed backport for it. If the backport needs some changes prior to being included in backports.org, please let me know and I see what I can do. Could take some time cause lots of other things to do. Bug#423797: FTBFS: .. ERROR:: Can't find a local numarray Python installation.
A Dilluns 14 Maig 2007 11:21, Jérémy Bobbio escrigué: Package: pytables Version: 1.3.2-2 Severity: serious Justification: no longer builds from source Hi! pytables currently fails to build from source in sid [1]: --- 8 --- dh_testdir python2.5 setup.py --force-ucl build .. Please, read carefully the ``README`` file and remember that PyTables needs the numarray package to compile and run. make: *** [build-stamp-2.5] Error 1 --- 8 --- [1] http://people.debian.org/~lucas/logs/2007/05/13/pytables_1.3.2-2_sid32. buildlog Yeah, it seems that the problem is that there is not a numarray package for python 2.5 in debian sid (there is an explicit 'python ( 2.5)' in package dependencies). I'm not sure why, but it might be due to the fact that numarray w/ python2.5 is not safe in 64-bit platforms. This should be fixed by requiring 'python ( 2.5)' in the pytables package. Anyway, PyTables 2.0 is around the corner and it gets rid of the numarray dependency (it depends on NumPy instead), so it shouldn't have any problem with python2.5 in 64-bit platforms. Hence, perhaps it would be wiser to wait until PyTables 2.0 arrives in order to provide a better solution to this issue. Cheers, -- 0,0 Francesc Altet http://www.carabos.com/ V V Cárabos Coop. V. Debian bug tracking system administrator (administrator, Debian Bugs database) ---BeginMessage--- Package: mixmaster Version: 3.0b2-4 Severity: important In function mix2_decrypt() in rem2.c, the value of a local variable changes without direct assignment, leading to a segfault further down when its associated buffer is accessed. The affected variable differed sometimes after I added debug code, while the value it was changed to and data at that location stayed the same. In most cases I saw the value of dec change between line 176 dec = buf_new(); dec = 0x80B83C8 (value of dec-data lost in transcription but it was different from below) dec-length = 0 dec-size = 128 and line 201 buf_get(m, dec, 328); with only a few buffer operations in between. dec = 0x80B8300 dec-data = 0x80B8278 dec-length = 134971984 (0x80B8250) dec-size = 29793 The interesting values are length, which looks like a pointer and size, which is about the size of a mixmaster message. This buffer structure at 0x80B8300 then gets overwritten by a memcpy of 328 bytes from the incoming message to dec-data at 0x80B8278, leading to a segfault when buf_append() tries to write a zero byte to dec-data+length. I recompiled with gcc-3.4 and mixmaster didn't crash yet. -- System Information: Debian Release: 4.0 APT prefers stable APT policy: (500, 'stable') Architecture: i386 (i686) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Kernel: Linux 2.6.18-4-686 Locale: LANG=C, LC_CTYPE=de_DE (charmap=ISO-8859-1) Versions of packages mixmaster depends on: ii adduser 3.102Add and remove users and groups ii debconf [debconf-2.0] 1.5.11 Debian configuration management sy ii libc6 2.3.6.ds1-13 GNU C Library: Shared libraries ii libmailtools-perl 1.74-1 Manipulate email in perl programs ii libncurses5 5.5-5Shared libraries for terminal hand ii libpcre36.7-1Perl 5 Compatible Regular Expressi ii libssl0.9.8 0.9.8c-4 SSL shared libraries ii libwww-perl 5.805-1 WWW client/server library for Perl ii zlib1g 1:1.2.3-13 compression library - runtime Versions of packages mixmaster recommends: ii exim4-daemon-custom [mail- 4.50-8sarge2a custom exim MTA (v4) daemon with l -- debconf information excluded ---End Message--- ---BeginMessage--- Source: mixmaster Source-Version: 3.0b2-4.etch1 We believe that the bug you reported is fixed in the latest version of mixmaster, which is due to be installed in the Debian FTP archive: mixmaster_3.0b2-4.etch1.diff.gz to pool/main/m/mixmaster/mixmaster_3.0b2-4.etch1.diff.gz mixmaster_3.0b2-4.etch1.dsc to pool/main/m/mixmaster/mixmaster_3.0b2-4.etch1.dsc mixmaster_3.0b2-4.etch1_i386.deb to pool/main/m/mixmaster/mixmaster_3.0b2-4.etch1_i386.deb A summary of the changes between this version and the previous one is attached. Bug#415034: chiark-utils FTBFS -- who is to blame?
Hi Magnus, On Tue, May 15, 2007 at 11:05:40AM +0200, Magnus Holmgren wrote: According to the nettle docs, summer needs be linked with -lnettle -lgmp, but I don't know if this is Right. As it happens, I was just discussing this with upstream. No it's not right. No software should be required to care about the implementation details of the library it's using, *especially* when dynamic linking on an OS that gets this right (such as GNU/Linux). The previous upstream version of libnettle (or at least, the Debian packaging thereof) got this right. The current behavior is a regression. While I will concede that it's *possible* to make every dependent package adapt when the library changes the internal details of which libraries it depends on, it is nevertheless *wrong* to do so. It's completely non-scalable on a variety of levels, and in this particular case breaks various useful technologies such as prelink which rely on being able to sort out the dependencies of individual ELF libraries. This regression also breaks any packages (e.g., those from etch) built against the previous version of libnettle, because upgrading libnettle2 will leave these gmpz symbols unresolved -- the old versions of the package didn't need to link against libgmp, the new version of libnettle didn't, so nothing links to libgmp. Here again, it's obvious that the part that should be linking against libgmp is the part that's actually *using* it -- libnettle, not the random app. Thanks, -- Steve Langasek Give me a lever long enough and a Free OS Debian Developer to set it on, and I can move the world. Hi, I've backported gnome-system-tools 2.18-1 and system-tools-backends 2.2.1-2 for etch, and everything works great, thanks. There only a couple of bugs I found in the system-tools-backends 1) It must depend on adduser, otherwise the postinst script will fail (this is particularly important for building gnome-system-tools with pbuilder) 2) It must depend on libnet-dbus-perl, otherwise it won't work properly I've just noticed that 2) as already been reported at #422702 With this mail I'm also opening a new bug against system-tools-backends for 1). Bug#415034: chiark-utils FTBFS -- who is to blame?

I was thinking of using pkg-config to get the right linker flags, thereby relieving the software using nettle from knowing the details. But it's still much better to link libnettle.so.2 with -lgmp, since it's always needed anyway. The previous upstream version of libnettle (or at least, the Debian packaging thereof) got this right. But it's still much better to link libnettle.so.2 with -lgmp, since it's always needed anyway. Right; pkg-config support is good in case people need to link with libnettle statically, or if they need to link with it on platforms that don't have robust shared lib handling, but making the apps link directly with libgmp still means that the next time libgmp has an soname transition, we would have four packages to rebuild instead of one (the three reverse-deps of libnettle, plus libnettle itself, which on top of everything else might be silently *broken* by the soname change in libgmp because it doesn't have a proper dependency specifying the ABI it needs). The previous upstream version of libnettle (or at least, the Debian packaging thereof) got this right. The current behavior is a regression. Yes, apparently I lost that piece of the Debian diff when I upgraded to upstream version 1.15. I'll fix it right away. Steve Langasek [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: No it's not right. No software should be required to care about the implementation details of the library it's using, *especially* when dynamic linking on an OS that gets this right (such as GNU/Linux). Just a detail: The dependence on gmp is not merely an implementation detail, it's part of the interface (the public nettle functions use gmp's mpz_t for passing around bignums). The reason I (upstream) recommend that applications using nettle link explicitly with -lnettle -lgmp, is that that seems to be the easiest portable way to get correct linking, across various systems, and with both dynamic and static linking. Debian priorities may well be different, since you always use dynamic linking and ELF. Do the chiark programs use the public-key parts of nettle? I consider it a bug that programs that aren't using gmp-dependent functions of nettle still must to link with gmp at runtime (assuming that nettle was configured with public key support, and dynamic linking is used; this worked better with static linking). A future version of nettle will split the library into two files, one that depends on gmp, and one that does not.
