I'm the upstream maintainer for the Imager perl module.
The BMP reader in Imager 0.56 and earlier can cause a memory overflow
in a malloced() buffer when reading an 8-bit/pixel compressed image
where a literal or RLE run overflows the scan-line boundary.
This typically causes the program to exit with a glibc bug, but it may
also be possible to corrupt the memory arena in such a way as to
execute arbitrary code, though I don't see how. At the very least
this could be a denial of service.
I've attached a patch that should apply to Imager 0.45 through 0.56
(with some fuzz).
I've released Imager 0.57 to CPAN which fixes this issue.

This bug is solved now, but for those who already did purge, the only solution is to reinstall the texlive packages (in particular texlive-base and texlive-base-bin, but that might not be sufficient) with the dpkg option --force-confmiss. The first time, this forced my to power-off my machine which could possibly lead to filesystem corruption. The problem seems to be that pg_ctl of postgresql-7.4 fails and /usr/bin/pg_ctlcluster does not give the slightest hint that something is wrong but simply blocks. My machine is a Core 2 Duo 64-bit at 2.33Ghz w/2GB RAM, and jackd with RT priorities set through the rtirq script. Ardour's CPU usage goes to 100%. Mouse and keyboard become unresponsive. Crazy amounts of Xruns in JACK, sound stutters, it's bad. The ardour-gtk 0.99 package exhibits the exact same behaviour on this system. Howerver, upstream ardour 2.0.2 runs perfectly on this system when run from its source tree with ardev, when built WITHOUT debian patches or SHLIBS flags, as default build. This package only works if you're still using the account you
logged in as. Logging in as a normal user, then using sudo or su
for root privileges, breaks the SSH test.
I have not had the time to investigate how to test for the common
cases you list. In case you want to speed things up, please consider
sending precise information or even a patch. What I need are obvious
characteristics that I can use to distinguish remote sessions from
local ones. Unfortunately, sudo purges $SSH_CONNECTION from the
environment, and su does not propagate it either.
One way to do it might be to obtain the current terminal node and
check whether it was created by sshd:
PTS=$(readlink /proc/$$/fd/0)
pgrep -f ^sshd.+${PTS#/dev/}$ /dev/null
I'll put this suggestion by Craig Small and Don Armstrong into the
next version.
Otherwise, if molly-guard does not suit your purpose, then I suggest
you purge it.

The things SCIM module packages need to do:
1. Build-depend on libscim-dev (= 1.4.6-1);
2a. If already using a patch to change @SCIM_MODULEDIR@/* to
@SCIM_MODULEDIR@/1.4.0/* in Makefile.{am,in}, drop such patch.
2b. If not using such a patch, make necessary changes to deal with
the move of installed module files from /usr/lib/scim-1.0/*/ to
/usr/lib/scim-1.0/1.4.0/*/.
3. (Optional) Change all references to /usr/lib/scim-1.0/1.4.0/ to
/usr/lib/scim-1.0/*/ so that binNMU is possible for the next SCIM
module ABI change.

Right, the only thing that uses TECkit is xetex, which explicitly links statically against ../../libs/teckit/lib/.libs/libTECkit.a. (OTOH, it could stand to link dynamically against libkpathsea.) Have you checked that it works, and on which architectures? I ran a test build on my amd64 machine and encountered no errors. Maybe it's safer to patch teckit to ignore --enable-shared? It looks like it should be possible to avoid patching anything by changing --enable-shared to --enable-shared=default (as TECkit and other third-party libraries set PACKAGE); the corresponding test build is still in progress, but I'll be sure to let you know how it goes. Specifically, it directs g++ to link in certain system objects that the compiler would normally supply itself, but neglects to tell the compiler not to introduce its own instances of the same objects.
