Bug#443955: audacity crashes during the start-up if the configuration file is non existent
Hello, I fail to reproduce this. I have a suspicion that on some people systems indeed gtk and wxwidgets are causing problems. Could you try running audacity without GNOME? (e.g. in KDE) Joost On Tuesday 25 September 2007 07:39:57 Géraud Meyer wrote: Package: audacity Version: 1.3.3-1+b1 Severity: grave Justification: renders package unusable First I noticed that audacity was crashing when almost any menu item was used (notably the Preferences item). Moving the configuration file ~/.audacity aside made audacity refuse to start. Simply launching audacity outputs this message: *** glibc detected *** audacity: munmap_chunk(): invalid pointer: 0x08647ba0 *** followed by the Backtrace and Memory map that are in the attached file audacity.crash. I suspect there are incompatibilites between the versions of wxwidgets and gtk because all the programs using wxwidgets that I use crash a lot since the last GNOME upgrade, although I would not say that something in the file audacity.crash hints at that cause. -- System Information: Debian Release: lenny/sid APT prefers unstable APT policy: (990, 'unstable'), (850, 'testing'), (760, 'stable'), (10, 'experimental') Architecture: i386 (i686) Kernel: Linux 2.6.22-desk2-k7 (PREEMPT) Locale: LANG=en_US.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=en_US.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/dash Versions of packages audacity depends on: ii libasound2 1.0.14a-2ALSA library ii libc6 2.6.1-5 GNU C Library: Shared libraries ii libexpat1 1.95.8-4 XML parsing C library - runtime li ii libgcc1 1:4.2.1-5GCC support library ii libglib2.0-02.14.1-3 The GLib library of C routines ii libgtk2.0-0 2.12.0-2 The GTK+ graphical user interface ii libid3tag0 0.15.1b-10 ID3 tag reading library from the M ii libjack00.103.0-6JACK Audio Connection Kit (librari ii libmad0 0.15.1b-2.1 MPEG audio decoder library ii libogg0 1.1.3-2 Ogg Bitstream Library ii libsndfile1 1.0.17-4 Library for reading/writing audio ii libstdc++6 4.2.1-5 The GNU Standard C++ Library v3 ii libvorbis0a 1.2.0.dfsg-2 The Vorbis General Audio Compressi ii libvorbisenc2 1.2.0.dfsg-2 The Vorbis General Audio Compressi ii libvorbisfile3 1.2.0.dfsg-2 The Vorbis General Audio Compressi ii libwxbase2.6-0 2.6.3.2.1.5 wxBase library (runtime) - non-GUI ii libwxgtk2.6-0 2.6.3.2.1.5 wxWidgets Cross-platform C++ GUI t audacity recommends no packages. -- no debconf information

Yeah, this was reported on the list as well, so with the additional details you gave, it means something broke in 2.6.22.6 on x86 and possibly in 2.6.22.5 on x86_64. that could be, I didn't have time to do earlier kernel releases before I left this evening - at the time I kinda thought the recent kernel-header issues might've been at fault, but since I build most kernels locally - I guess that doens't really make sense... but it has been a long month so far this week :) I'll follow up to the current mailing list discussion about this and see if we can get to the bottom of it. Cool, I'm relieved I'm not just hallucinating the whole thing Does the current Debian unstable kernel work? Good question ! Bug#443955: certain GTK themes seems to make audacity not crash during the start-up
You were right. audacity starts fine under KDE and GNOME/Openbox. I used gnome-appearance-properties to change the themes. Only a limited number of Control themes seem to allow audacity to start: Mist, Sphere Crystal, Crux and Raleigh (I might have missed a few). With certain themes the start-up message of audacity is `Segmentation fault'. Only those same themes allow also vlc to start (with the wxwidgets interface), so the problem must be related to wxwidgets. Joost Yervante Damad wrote: Hello, I fail to reproduce this. Bug#439389: How to detect if inside a buildd chroot
The following message is a courtesy copy of an article that has been posted to gmane.linux.debian.devel.general as well. tag 439389 help stop Sebastian Dröge [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: Would it make sense to demote the dependency on the hal daemon to a Recommends (after all, the hal client library should deal with the daemon not running anyway)? In one of the cases I found this won't be correct: gnome-mount depends on hal as it doesn't work at all without hal. libnautilus-burn should depend on gnome-mount as it can't do some stuff if gnome-mount is not available. If this is a recommends only, people that don't install recommends have a unusable library lying around. I think this problem is similar to #439389 in xine-lib (RC, help really appreciated): - libxine1 only depends on libraries, that it really needs. This leaves users that don't install the recommended packages in the situation, that they cannot play their mp3/ogg/etc files. - Promoting them to depends causes them to be installed in any case, which is unwanted in special-use situations (think embedded or special purpose multimedia center installations). - leaving them as recommends causes xine frontends not only to build faster (fewer dependencies to be installed), but also to build more reliably (as you aren't affected by some potential library transition, happened several times in the past. In conclusion: I think we are facing a very similar problem, but we are solving it differently: You prefer to not annoy users which don't respect recommends, and I urge/force people to install recommends if they want to have a usable frontend. Can we perhaps reach a broader consensus on this type of decisions? Ideally, we can clarify this in the Developers Reference. -- Gruesse/greetings, Reinhard Tartler, KeyID 945348A4
Bug#444002: dibbler: several security problems fixed in new upstream version
Package: dibbler Severity: grave Tags: security Justification: user security hole Hi There are three CVEs issued for dibbler. CVE-2007-5028: Dibbler 0.6.0 on Linux uses weak world-writable permissions for unspecified files in /var/lib/dibbler, which has unknown impact and local attack vectors. CVE-2007-5029: Dibbler 0.6.0 does not verify that certain length parameters are appropriate for buffer sizes, which allows remote attackers to trigger a buffer over-read and cause a denial of service (daemon crash), as demonstrated by incorrect behavior of the TSrvMsg constructor in SrvMessages/SrvMsg.cpp when (1) reading the option code and option length and (2) parsing options. CVE-2007-5030: Multiple integer overflows in Dibbler 0.6.0 allow remote attackers to cause a denial of service (daemon crash) via packets containing options with large lengths, which trigger attempts at excessive memory allocation, as demonstrated by (1) the TSrvMsg constructor in SrvMessages/SrvMsg.cpp; the (2) TClntMsg, (3) TClntOptIAAddress, (4) TClntOptIAPrefix, (5) TOptVendorSpecInfo, and (6) TOptOptionRequest constructors; and the (7) TRelIfaceMgr::decodeRelayRepl, (8) TRelMsg::decodeOpts, and (9) TSrvIfaceMgr::decodeRelayForw methods. There might be some other fixes in the new 0.6.1 version, according to the upstream CHANGELOG. I am still looking at the source code to separate them. Could you please consider packaging the new upstream version to fix these issues and please mention the CVE numbers in the changelog. Bug#443831: apt-setup: Does not select mirror with netinst CD
Joey Hess wrote: Frans Pop wrote: Note that with my old, apt-setup would only default to using a mirror and thus time out. Your patch was intended to avoid that time out (which is fine), but at the cost of breaking the normal case. IMO timing out in situations that occur only rarely is even somewhat acceptable. It wasn't only a timeout, it kept looping back and asking for a mirror over and over, since each time one was entered it failed to work due to there being no network. See #442891. OK, I did not have that BR clearly in mind. However your analysis of the situation is still wrong and both your uploads have been useless if your intention was to solve that loop. In fact, by removing the do not configure check, you have only ensured that _more_ users will end up in that loop. The loop is not in apt-setup, but in choose-mirror. I have just committed a change that: - reinstates the do not configure check because, even if it is not a perfect detection of a no network situation, it will at least do the right thing in an identifiable use case and will not lead to problems in _any_ other scenario (including netcfg-static) - allows users to continue without a mirror if choose-mirror exits non-zero I have considered several solutions for the loop, but feel that this is the best option, even if it adds an extra dialog (which very few users will ever see). Rationale is as follows: - for netboot and businesscard installs choose-mirror will already have been run in a much earlier stage, so is not relevant - for full CD installs users will be asked if they want to use a mirror (at high prio) _before_ choose-mirror is called - for netinsts, we really want users to use a mirror by default, so the use_mirror question should preferably _not_ be asked before calling choose-mirror; it's only asked at medium/low priority - if a user does not have a network with a netinst install, he is basically doing something that is not intended, so going into choose-mirror without asking if he wants to use a mirror beforehand is acceptable - however, if there is no network or the network setup is bad, the user should have the option of either backing out and correcting his mirror setup or continuing without a mirror; the new question allows both and even allows the user to run choose-mirror again if he backed out of choose-mirror by accident I have considered solutions that did not add a dialog, but in the end this seemed the cleanest solution. Cheers, FJP P.S. This change _has_ been tested. signature.asc Description: This is a digitally signed message part.

Bug#444061: astrolog: Placalc code not distributable
Package: astrolog Version: 5.40-3 Severity: serious Justification: copyright We don't have a license to be redistributing the Placalc code contained in the placalc.{c,h} and placalc2.c source files. Upstream says: # The extended accurate ephemeris databases and formulas are from the # calculation routines in the program Placalc and are programmed and # Copyright (C) 1989,1991,1993 by Astrodienst AG and Alois Treindl The # use of that source code is subject to regulations made by Astrodienst # Zurich, and the code is not in the public domain. This copyright # notice must not be changed or removed by any user of this program. While Astrodienst AG and Alois Treindl may have given upstream permission to use the code, that doesn't allow _us_ to redistribute it. Upstream _does_ explicitly permit redistribution, modification, etc., of the rest of the package. Since we don't distribute the extended ephemeris database already, removing these files from the source tarball has no effect on the functioning of the program. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#442271: courier-pop-ssl: pop3s does not work any more
Defining TLS_PROTOCOL to SSL2 is a bit problematic. When left at SSL3 courier only accepts SSL3.x handshakes (not SSL2.0-compatibility ones). When defining the variable to be set to SSL2 courier only accepts SSL2.0 and SSL2.0-compatibility handshakes. Therefore the setting SSL2 makes real SSL3.0 and TLS1.0 handshakes to fail. This affects all mail clients, that do use GnuTLS instead of OpenSSL which does not use the old SSL2.0 compatible handshake (because it is not SSL2.0 compatibile) but uses a real SSL3.0 or TLS handshake. The value SSL23 really should get added to the debian package also for version 0.56.0 as a debian add-on.
