Are there other messages before that one ?

Could you also check and send here the parameters used by grub to boot
the system ?

(you can see them at the boot menu by hitting 'e' on the default

Bug#445211: installation-report: Kernel panics every time I try to boot it.

2007-10-03 Thread Willy Gommel
Package: installation-reports
Version: 2.29
Severity: critical
Justification: breaks the whole system

-- Package-specific info:

Boot method: CD
Image version:
HTTP://cdimage.debian.org/debian-cd/4.0_r1/i386/iso-cd/debian-40r1-i386-businesscard.iso
Date:  10-3-2007 all day.
Machine; Toshiba A200-ST2042
Partitions:
1 main partition, 2 GB, holding /
1 extended partition, 78 GB, holding everything else.

Base System Installation Checklist:
[O] = OK, [E] = Error (please elaborate below), [ ] = didn't try it

Initial boot:   [O]
Detect network card:[O]
Configure network:  [E]
Detect CD:  [O]
Load installer modules: [O]
Detect hard drives: [O]
Partition hard drives:  [O]
Install base system:[O]
Clock/timezone setup:   [O]
User/password setup:[O]
Install tasks:  [O]
Install boot loader:[O]
Overall install:[O]

Comments/Problems: The "Configure Network" option actually failed a couple of
times. The option to retry it always succeeded.

The big problem always happens when the installation says it's complete, and
it's time to reboot from the hard disk. It never succeeds in doing that.
Always, at the end, it says:

"Begin: Running Scripts/Init-bottom ...
Done.
run-init; /sbin/init: No such file or directory
Kernel-panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill Init!"

Which, of course, puts an immediate and permanent stop to the proceedings.

Not applicable. I've done too many installs to have any particular feeling.

Bug#445113: Reasons for bus error

2007-10-03 Thread brian m. carlson
If you're getting a bus error on sparc, then that's probably due to an
unaligned memory access. On sparc machines, you can only access memory
that is properly aligned. The buildds on ia64 are set with prctl to
have this behavior as well, because although (IIRC) the ia64 kernel can
fix up unaligned accesses, it is very expensive to do so.

Looking at the ps2pdf shell script, it seems that this is a problem with
gs. You might try running the following command by hand to see if you
get the same error (maybe under gdb?):

gs -dSAFER -dCompatibilityLevel=1.4 -q -dNOPAUSE -dBATCH -sDEVICE=pdfwrite
-sOutputFile=faq.pdf -dSAFER -dCompatibilityLevel=1.4 -c .setpdfwrite -f
faq.ps

HTH.

Your package fails to build with GCC 4.2. Version 4.2 has not been
released yet but I'm building with a snapshot in order to find errors
and give people an advance warning. The bug below is in your package
and not because I'm using a snapshot of the compiler so please take a
look at it. You can reproduce this with the gcc-snapshot package.

Subject: diff-ext: Invalid memory reference

Version: 0.2.1-1

Nautilus crashes when diff-ext is installed.
More precisely, it crashes when I click on an item, a file, a directory with any
mouse button, left, right, middle, etc.
On the directory opening, I can still open a specific directory via the CRTL+L
shortcut.

Here the traceback catched by debreaper (that was wrongly identifying the
to-blame package as nautilus-cd-burner) :

Bug#445190: libgcc1-dbg: dependency on libgcc1 lacks epoch

2007-10-03 Thread Aaron M. Ucko
Package: libgcc1-dbg
Version: 1:4.2.1-6
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

libgcc1-dbg depends on libgcc1 (= 4.2.1-6) rather than (= 1:4.2.1-6)
and is therefore uninstallable; likewise for lib32gcc1-dbg, and
presumably also for lib64gcc1-dbg on i386.

Bug#431026: [PEAR-DEV] Quality assurance proposition for HTMLSax3

2007-10-03 Thread Lukas Kahwe Smith

Romain Beauxis wrote:

[Note]: Apologize for the non-english readers...

Hi all !

While packaging SPIP for debian, I came across files that where extracted from
the PEAR package HTMLSax3 [1]

We have had some trouble with them for the following reasons:
* Licence headers claim they are un der PHP licence version 2.02 but gives a
link to version 3 for details.
* A PHP licenced packaged should be distributed only as a php related package,
for licencing claims issues.

* Only version 3 is accepted, under previous condition.

So, we'd like to clarify licence to version 3, which is at least what's
claimed as its content, and then package it as a php-* package.

I have contacted Harry. His email address is defunct, but I got someone
to update it to his current one. So now he can get a new password and
fix the license issues.

regards,
Lukas

Bug#426953: Conflict with python-matplotlib and python-numpy

2007-10-03 Thread Nathaniel Fairfield
I think a variant of this bug is still outstanding in python-matplotlib
0.90.1-2

I have selected numerix: numpy in my matplotlibrc.

When I try to import pylab after installing python-matplotlib, I get the
error

The import of the numpy version of the nxutils module,
_nsnxutils, failed. This is is either because numpy was
unavailable when matplotlib was compiled, because a dependency of
_nsnxutils could not be satisfied, or because the build flag for
this module was turned off in setup.py. If it appears that
_nsnxutils was not built, make sure you have a working copy of
numpy and then re-install matplotlib. Otherwise, the following
traceback gives more details:

Traceback (most recent call last):
  File "", line 1, in ?
  File "/usr/lib/python2.4/site-packages/pylab.py", line 1, in ?
from matplotlib.pylab import *
  File "/usr/lib/python2.4/site-packages/matplotlib/pylab.py", line 201,
in ?
import mlab #so I can override hist, psd, etc...
  File "/usr/lib/python2.4/site-packages/matplotlib/mlab.py", line 64, in ?
import nxutils
  File "/usr/lib/python2.4/site-packages/matplotlib/nxutils.py", line
17, in ?
from matplotlib._ns_nxutils import *
ImportError: No module named _ns_nxutils

Searching through the indicated site packages (before and after manually
compiling matplotlib) indicates that several files are missing,
particularly _ns_nxutils.so.

Cheers,
Nathaniel

As I understand it, Chris Kelly, the Gallery Project Manager talked to
Harry about relicensing HTMLSax3 under a GPL compatible license and
Harry agreed to do so. That's the impression Chris gave me when I asked
about it recently.

According to http://nvd.nist.gov/nvd.cfm?cvename=CVE-2007-5135
(http://cve.mitre.org/cgi-bin/cvename.cgi?name=CVE-2007-5135 is not
yet available):

Off-by-one error in the SSL_get_shared_ciphers function in OpenSSL
0.9.7l and 0.9.8d might allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary
code via a crafted packet that triggers a one-byte buffer underflow.

According to the German IT news magazin "Heise Online", 0.9.7m and
0.9.8e are also affected:
http://www.heise.de/security/news/meldung/96710

Original source seems to be this Bugtraq posting:
http://www.securityfocus.com/archive/1/archive/1/480855/100/0/threaded

According to this posting, all lower versions are affected, too.

The release dates of 0.9.8e and 0.9.7m and the time line in the above
mentioned Bugtraq posting suggest that not only 0.9.7l and 0.9.8d but
also 0.9.7m and 0.9.8e are affected -- as Heise wrote.

Ah yes you are right, I had missed the difference in the upstream version.
The bug is reopenend now, thanks for pointing this out.

BTW 0.22a-1 is build against ocaml 3.09 and hence does no longer

I spoke with upstream about this. Its currently not possible as cacao
needs to access some internals of boehm-gc which are not exposed in a
public API. Its about handling signals. Upstream plans to make it
possible to use the the system installed boehm-gc but that will need
some more work on cacao upstream.

The bug log shows that atleast the debconf message was displayed, which
means we atleast got to this part:
db_version 2.0

db_reset libssl0.9.8/restart-services
db_set libssl0.9.8/restart-services "$services"
db_input critical libssl0.9.8/restart-services || true
db_go || true

By looking at the number of empty lines in the bug report,
it seem to me atleast this was done too:

db_get libssl0.9.8/restart-services
# Arghhh, close all the stupid debconf pipes
db_stop

if [ "x$RET" != "x" ]
then
services=$RET
answer=yes
else
answer=no
fi
echo

But then this part wasn't executed:
if [ "$answer" = yes ] && [ "$services" != "" ]; then
echo "Restarting services possibly affected by the upgrade:"
[...]
fi
else
echo "Nothing to restart."
fi
fi # end upgrading and $2 lt 0.9.8c-2
fi # Upgrading
fi

# Automatically added by dh_makeshlibs
if [ "$1" = "configure" ]; then
ldconfig
fi

Which basicly leaves the "if" or the "ldconfig", which both seem
unlikely.

Bug#433141: Quality assurance proposition for HTMLSax3

2007-10-03 Thread Romain Beauxis

We have tried to contact maintainers and filled a bug on PEAR [2], but did not
receive any answer.
As it seems, the project is not maintained since 2004.

I don't know if you do some similar work that our QA does, but until original
maitainer speaks up, or we find any candidate to maintain it and if you don't
already do this, I'd like to propose some QA maintenance on HTMLSax3.

I cannot at all maintain the package, but at least I could clarify licencing
and apply any security related patch that could be sumbited. That's basicaly
the work that a debian maintainer does for its stable packages.

That is not a good solution, but's that the least we can do, since this code
is already is some of our packages (gallery, gallery2 and knowledgeroot) and
possibly used by many other webapps projects..

Since I can't reproduce it either, it makes it very hard for me to fix

Bug#445134: azureus: always crashes on starup

Hello Roman,

You currently have three JVM installed (sun-java5-jre, sun-java6-jre,
and java-gcj-compat). Which are you using? Run these commands for me:

$ /usr/sbin/update-alternatives --display java
$ ls -l /etc/alternatives/java
$ /usr/sbin/update-alternatives --display swt.jar
$ ls -l /etc/alternatives/swt.jar

Also please run azureus from the command line and send me the
resulting console output.

As a quick guess at fixing your problem, try running this command:

$ sudo update-alternatives --auto swt.jar

If that fixes your issue, please tell me so.

Thanks,
Shaun

No... I downgraded libssl-dev and libssl0.9.8 to 0.9.8c-4 and then
upgraded to 0.9.8c-4etch1 and the problem did not occur on upgrade (and

For me it was vice-versa. dialog was showing me the services and did
also restart them. Readline did not show any service (I was supposed to
type them in manually but left it blank).

How is debconf configured? How did you run the upgrade?

Was this some automated upgrade with frontend dialog that didn't have
a controlling tty?

I've tried to use the fronends dialog, readline and noninteractive.
Neither of them show this problem for me.

The results I got were:
- dialog: it's not showing me the default list of services
  to restart. Just pressing enter doesn't restart anything.
  I believe this to be a bug in debconf.
  However it does properly configure the package.
- readline: Works as expected
- noninteractive: Restarts the services, but doesn't show
  the message of why.

I just tried to compile the current version of freebirth with the
current gcc (4.2) version in unstable, and it still segfaults.

Package: audacity
Version:  1.3.3-1+b1
Severity: grave

When selecting preference dialogues in Audacity, the program segfaults.
This applies whether using the "Edit -> Preferences" menu item, or when
preferences are changed from within other dialogues (e.g. clicking
"Options" from within the export dialogue).

Here's the full output when I run audacity from the command line and
select "Edit -> Preferences".

Discussed in http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2007/05/msg01173.html

With glibc-2.5 and gcc-4.1.2 (and gcc-4.2), the 'long double'
data type did change from a 64bit representation to a 128bit
representation on alpha, powerpc, sparc, s390. To allow
partial upgrades of packages, we will need to rename all
packages holding libraries with the long double data type in
their API. Both libc and libstdc++ do not need to be renamed,
because they support both representations. We rename the library
packages on all architectures to avoid name mismatches between
architectures (you can avoid the renaming by supporting both
datatype representations in the library as done in glibc and
libstdc++, but unless a library is prepared for that, it does not
seem to be worth the effort).

It is suggested to rename a package libfoo1 to libfoo1ldbl;
please wait with the renaming if the package depends on
another library package which needs renaming.

This package has been indentified as one with header files in
/usr/include matching 'long *double'. Please close this bug report
if it is a false positive, or rename the package accordingly.

Package: evolution
Version: 2.12.0-1
Severity: serious
Justification: no longer builds from source

Could you please tighten evolution's build-dependencies on libe*1.2-dev?
As it stands, the autobuilders can (unsuccessfully) attempt to use 1.10.x
whereas evolution appears to require a newer version, at least of
libedataserver1.2-dev.  To quote

Hello,

I think I found a bug in gcc-4.2. The bug is easy to reproduce. I have
it under sid and also under testing.

I provide a simple test program (gint_to_pointer.c):
#include

int main(void)
{
   int i, j;

   for (i=0; i<6; i++)
   {
   j = i-1;
   printf("%d %d\n", j, (void *)(j));
   }
}

When compiled with make gint_to_pointer CFLAGS="-O0" the execution gives:
-1 -1
0 0
1 1
2 2
3 3
4 4

But when compiled with make gint_to_pointer CFLAGS="-O2" the execution gives:
-1 -1
0 -1
1 -1
2 -1
3 -1
4 -1

I generated the assembly for the two cases.

I do not read i386 assembly so can't help spot the bug.

Notes:
I have no problem if I use "i" or "i+1" instead of "i-1".
I have no problem if I start the loop at 1 instead of 0.

I discovered the bug because of my package does not work correctly anymore.
Other packages compiled with gcc-4.2 may also fail in very obscure ways.

Thanks,

Hello,

I think I found a bug in gcc-4.2. The bug is easy to reproduce. I have

I provide a simple test program (gint_to_pointer.c):

}

When compiled with make gint_to_pointer CFLAGS="-O0" the execution gives:

Severity: serious
User: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

This package has been identified as affected by the removal of php4 in debian.

As php4 will soon be removed, it is very important that we:
 - update the dependencies of all applicable packages to coexist with php5
 - remove source and/or binary packages which have no use without php4

for more information on what may need to be done, please see

  http://wiki.debian.org/PHP4Removal

if you have any questions, please contact the debian php maintainers

thanks!

Hi,

While reviewing packages that were not included in Etch, your package came
up as a package that should maybe be orphaned by its maintainer, because:

* Several Release Critical Bugs
* Doesnt compile with Kernel version in the archive

If you think that it should be removed from Debian instead of being orphaned,
please reply to this bug and tell so.

If you agree that it should be orphaned, sending the following commands to
[EMAIL PROTECTED] should do it (after replacing nn with this bug's
number):
severity nn normal
reassign nn wnpp
retitle nn O: gpib --
thanks

For more information, see
http://www.debian.org/doc/developers-reference/ch-pkgs.en.html#s-archive-manip
http://www.debian.org/devel/wnpp/

If you disagree and want to continue to maintain this package, please close
this bug, preferably in an upload also fixing the other issues.

Thank you,
- michael

Hi,

firebird1.5 (providing firebird2-dev) will be removed[1] from the
archive because it is no longer supported upstream and has security
issues.

[1] http://bugs.debian.org/438862

This will make gambas2 instantly FTBFS. Severity set to serious because
gambas2 should not be included in a stable release with missing
build-dependencies.

The attached patch replaces firebird2-dev build-dependency with
firebird2.0-dev. I tried to build the package with the patch applied,
but it failed in unrelated part (see #440860).

Thanks for considering,
dam

Sounds like X is dying on vt switch. I assume this doesn't happen when
xscreensaver isn't running?
If X is indeed crashing, can you attach your X log after the crash?
(should be /var/log/Xorg.0.log, or /var/log/Xorg.0.log.old after X has
been restarted)

Cheers,
Julien

Well, there is already a libxine1-plugins package, which just depends on
all other packages. Do we want to rename that to libxine1-all-plugins?

libxine1-core instead of libxine1-basicplugins sounds okay to me.

Aha. How does the package itself not bbuild from source anymore?
Can you please explain that to me?

The package itself *DOES* biuild. What the package then does when
*installed* is something else than its *build*.

It's just that the installation expectsa file which is not there
anymore. Yes, this is broken and this is fixed since long in testing and
unstable.

(I'll try to push this for either colatile or s adebian stable update)

Bug#443674: same problem here

2007-10-03 Thread Craig Sanders
another data point re: nvidia 100.14.11 and 100.14.19 drivers

i'm not sure if this is an nvidia-glx bug, an nvidia-kernel-* bug, or a
kernel bug. it certainly shouldn't be classed as a browser bug because
applications shouldn't be able to lock the system solid.

my very strong suspicion is that it's actually the nvidia-kernel-*
driver which is at fault. see below for why.

i also had the same problem with version 100.14.11

like Hans, my entire system locks up after moderate use of the web
browser (either mozilla or iceweasel - haven't tried others). scrolling
a page back and forth, for example, will trigger it very quickly.

here's why i think it's the kernel driver:

i have been running kernel 2.6.20.14 with nvidia-kernel 100.14.09 for 2+
months without problems, without rebooting.

about a week ago, i had a power failure and took the opportunity to
reboot into a new 2.6.22.6 kernel. i compiled nvidia-kernel 100.14.11 to
go with it, and upgraded nvidia-glx at the same time.

the machine locked solid while using iceweasel within an hour of
booting. rebooted again. it locked again while using iceweasel, also in
less than an hour.

i rebooted again and selected the old kernel (2.6.20.14) from the
grub menu. the machine ran fine until today (when a hard disk problem
required me to reboot).

thinking the problem might have been with the 2.6.22.x kernel, i tried
compiling 2.6.20.20 and nvidia-kernel driver 100.14.19, and again
upgraded nvidia-glx to suit. again, the machine locked while using a
browser (iceape, this time).

i rebooted back to 2.6.20.14 and the machine has been running fine
since...nearly 5 hours now.

note: reverting to the old nvidia-kernel driver (100.14.09) while
keeping the newer nvidia-glx package causes warnings about mismatched
version to appear in /var/log/kern.log but everything works fine. that
was how i ran it for the last week until today, and it's how i've been
running it for the last 5 hours.

Oct 3 18:48:42 ganesh kernel: [ 200.629000] NVRM: API mismatch: the client
has the version 100.14.19, but
Oct 3 18:48:42 ganesh kernel: [ 200.629000] NVRM: this kernel module has the
version 100.14.09.  Please
Oct 3 18:48:42 ganesh kernel: [ 200.629000] NVRM: make sure that this kernel
module and all NVIDIA driver
Oct 3 18:48:42 ganesh kernel: [ 200.629000] NVRM: components have the same
version.

fortunately, the latest nvidia-glx package's dependancy on the matching
nvidia-kernel package version only requires that nvidia-kernel-* package
to be installed - it doesn't force you to use that nvidia.ko kernel
module.

so, Hans, there's another workaround for you. use an older kernel and
the 100.14.09 nvidia-kernel driver, with the new nvidia-glx package.
works fine.

note: in all cases, i used stock linux kernel source from kernel.org and
NOT the debianised kernel sources. i don't and won't use them.

Bug#443674: two more data points

2007-10-03 Thread Craig Sanders
and two more data points i forgot to mention in my last message.

i have two other machines here, also with nvidia cards.

1. "hex" is an ancient amd-2000 with an nv geforce 6200.

01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation NV44A [GeForce 6200] (rev
a1)

it has been running without error & without reboot for the last week
on kernel 2.6.22.6, with nvidia-kernel driver 100.14.11 and nvidia-glx
100.14.11

i decided to reboot it today with kernel 2.6.22.9 and nvidia 100.14.19. it
has been working fine for about 8.5 hours so far.

2. "kali" is an amd64 with an nv geforce fx 5200

01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation NV34 [GeForce FX 5200]
(rev a1)

kali never got upgraded to 2.6.22.6 & nv 100.14.11 because of the problems
i had with my main machine.

however, i installed a new kernel and rebooted it earlier today with
2.6.20.20 and nvidia 100.14.19. no problems at all (just over 9 hours).

so far, the common factor in crashing machines seems to be the nvidia
7300 GS chipset combined with nvidia drivers 100.14.11 or 100.14.19.

Seems fine; I'm just not sure about the package naming, though. libxine1-core
+ libxine1-all-plugins?

And I don't think that we want that '>' ;-)

Wasn't the point of libxine1-console to avoid pulling in X...?

Anyway, the FAQ and other documentation should be arch: all packages,
I will review why this is not working on the build daemons.

Hi,
When upgrading from util-vserver 0.30.212-1 to 0.30.214-3 I'm unable to
enter my vserver, downgrading to 0.30.212-1 make it work again.

I get the following error:
vtag: vc_tagopt2tag(""): No such file or directory
I'm running the 2.6.17-2-vserver-amd64 kernel.
You're using dynamic contexts which have been deprecated for years, and are
disabled in testing/unstable kernels. The backports.org package for stable
includes the patch that fixes this.

It looks like I'm running dynamic contexts, and they might have been
deprecated for years, but as far as I know, the version in stable still
seems to generate them, and the version in testing/unstable doesn't seem
to either warn about that, document it somewhere I can find it, or fix it
for me.

Yes, versions up to and including 0.30.212 required you to manually
manage the context ids. 0.30.214 _will_ error when using dynamic
contexts on a kernel that don't support them, and won't even let you
build a guest using a dynamic context. As for fixing it for you, I
wouldn't want my uids and gids suddenly changing due to an upgrade...

I'm not really sure for this one. The FTBFS is for the version 0.22a
(please notice the small "a") which is only available in experimental.
Can you confirm that this precise version builds fine on alpha?

Samuel.

Bug#439389: Depends->Recommends dependency change breaking other packages

2007-10-03 Thread Reinhard Tartler

I've been thinking about Sune's suggestion, and I've ended up with the
following temporary changelog:

xine-lib (1.1.8-2) UNRELEASED; urgency=low

  [Reinhard Tartler]
  * use dh_listpackages instead of hardcoded list for determining the
provided binary packages.
  * Bug fix: "Depends->Recommends dependency change breaking other
packages", thanks to Christoph Pfister and Sune Vuorela
(Closes: #439389)
- rename libxine1 to libxine1-basicplugins.
- promote all dependencies of libxine1-basicplugins to Depends.
- introduce empty meta-package libxine1 that depends on
  libxine1-plugins | libxine1-basicplugins. Apt will prefer the
  first alternative, which results in all plugins installed by
  default. Caveat: If one plugin package has unsatisfyable
  dependencies the user will end up with libxine1-basicplugins.
- change shlibs of libxine1 to (basically):
  libxine1-plugins | libxine1-basicplugins. This ensures that
  frontend packages will prefer the full set of plugins, but will
  also work with a smaller set of plugins.
  * move xineplug_vo_out_xdirectfb to libxine1-console (See: #427982)

  [Darren Salt]
  * Add patches from upstream:
- DVD MRL title.chapter fix

Bug#445113: snort: FTBFS on a few archs

2007-10-03 Thread Steffen Joeris
Package: snort
Severity: serious

Hi

When I checked snort for testing migration, I saw that it did not build
on a few archs (arm, hppa, ia64, s390 and sparc) and it always has this
error message:

ps2pdf faq.ps
make[1]: *** [faq.pdf] Bus error
make[1]: *** Deleting file `faq.pdf'
rm faq.ps faq.dvi

Do you maybe have a fix for that issue?
Thanks for your efforts.

Cheers
Steffen

Bug#445111: openser: doesn't build with newer libxmlrpc

2007-10-03 Thread Julien BLACHE
Package: openser
Version: 1.2.2-2
Severity: serious

OpenSER currently doesn't build with the newer libxmlrpc version, due
to important and backward-incompatible changes in libxmlrpc.

Upstream is working on it, but I have no ETA and that code may not
even make it in the 1.3 version due in december.

JB.

Bug#445104: xscreensaver: aborts X session if I let the log-back-in screen time out while switched to a virtual console

2007-10-03 Thread Edward Welbourne
Package: xscreensaver
Version: 5.03-2
Severity: critical
Justification: causes serious data loss

Ever since switching to a Dell flat-screen (2007FPb - I was previously
using a CRT) I've experienced a problem where:
 * I lock my X session,
 * I switch to a virtual console (Ctrl-Alt-F1, etc.), which (because I
   touched the keyboard) provokes the password dialog to come up,
 * I don't switch back to the X display before the password dialog
   times out,
 * when I *do* switch back to the X display, my X session dies.

Note that the X session is still up and running *before* I Ctrl+Alt+F7
back to try to resume it (as revealed by ps in my virtual console, and
by the time-stamp on my .xsession-error).
My .xsession-errors ends in:

X connection to :0.0 broken (explicit kill or server shutdown).
Gdk-ERROR **: Fatal IO error 104 (Connection reset by peer) on X server :0.0.
X connection to :0.0 broken (explicit kill or server shutdown).
Xlib: connection to ":0.0" refused by server
Xlib: Invalid XDM-AUTHORIZATION-1 key (failed key comparison)
Error: Can't open display
Exiting from getDisplay.cpp at line 47

If I hold Ctrl+Alt until the blue time-out bar has all gone away, in
the password dialog, and hit F5 while the "authentication failed"
dialog is displayed, the X session dies. Holding Ctrl+Alt a bit
longer, until even this dialog has gone, *then* hitting F5 changes
console for me, without hurting the X session.

Leaving the X session unlocked, switching to a virtual console and
remaining there until the screen-saver locks the screen due to its
usual time-outs doesn't provoke the problem. If I lock my X session
by selecting the relevant root-window menu item and quickly (before
the lock has come into force, so that the password dialog doesn't get
activated) Ctrl+Alt+F5 away, the X session survives.

Usually, xdm manages to start a new X session after mine has died, but
not always. When it doesn't, Ctrl+Alt+F7 shows me

INIT: version 2.86 reloading

Naturally, applications that I've left active in my X session get
hosed by the X session's death, taking with them any unsaved data;
hence the "data loss" category for this bug.

It's not clear to me which of several pieces of software is the culprit.
I'm using fvwm as my window manager and xscreensaver as screen saver.
The root window within fvwm is displaying xplanet.
The virtual consoles run getty; the X session is managed by xdm.
However, xscreensaver's password prompt seems pivotal.

Bug#442846: Conflict?

2007-10-03 Thread Rasmus Bøg Hansen
Philippe Cloutier <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> hit the keyboard.
Afterwards the following was on the screen:

> Doesn't xserver-xorg-core 1.4 conflict with current nvidia-glx?

I probably forgot to mention that I had to ignore that conflict to get
it installed. I apologize!

Anyway, the new package version solves all the problems I mentioned
(at least for me), so all is good now.

Regards
/Rasmus
