This is rude at the very least; by implication, the only person worth
mentioning who's contributed anything to this package is Ron Lee. If
what I hear about moral rights outside the USA is true, it may even
rise to the level of illegality to incorrectly infer such a prominent
status for oneself and such a minor place for others.

You are mixing things that aren't on the same level. The _packaging_
has been created by Ron Lee indeed, meaning that what is under debian/
is his. Nowhere it claims he wrote any of the package upstream. If you
believe you read something like that, read again. And again, because
you're wrong.

OTOH this debian/copyright is clearly deficient in many ways, but stop
accusing him of bad faith, you're just out of your mind.

Dear Ondrej, please inform depending packages if you upload a API

There was a discussion on debian-release. Thought you all track that
 list.

Definitely not. You should never assume that anyone is following

When upgrading today, aptitude faile to install acpi-support-base
because it is trying to overwrite `/usr/share/acpi-support/policy-funcs',
which is also in package acpi-support. Please, add a Replace/Conflict
as needed.

Thanks for reporting.

Raphael, I've committed a potential fix which adds a few conflicts. I'm
hoping this will get the package managers to do the right thing --
uninstall all acpi-support before installing the new versions. Do you
think this will work? I don't know enough about how smart these tools

slapo-pcache (overlays/pcache.c) in slapd in OpenLDAP before 2.3.39,
when running as a proxy-caching server, allocates memory using a
malloc variant instead of calloc, which prevents an array from being
initiialized properly and might allow attackers to cause a denial of
service (segmentation fault) via unknown vectors that prevent the
array from being null terminated.

This information is not yet on the mitre site but it seems to be public.
A fix for this can be found on:

Discussed in http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2007/05/msg01173.html

With glibc-2.5 and gcc-4.1.2 (and gcc-4.2), the 'long double'
data type did change from a 64bit representation to a 128bit
representation on alpha, powerpc, sparc, s390. To allow
partial upgrades of packages, we will need to rename all
packages holding libraries with the long double data type in
their API. Both libc and libstdc++ do not need to be renamed,
because they support both representations. We rename the library
packages on all architectures to avoid name mismatches between
architectures (you can avoid the renaming by supporting both
datatype representations in the library as done in glibc and
libstdc++, but unless a library is prepared for that, it does not
seem to be worth the effort).

It is suggested to rename a package libfoo1 to libfoo1ldbl;
please wait with the renaming if the package depends on
another library package which needs renaming.

This package has been indentified as one with header files in
/usr/include matching 'long *double'. Please close this bug report
if it is a false positive, or rename the package accordingly.

Bug#451786: jde: incorrect dependencies, unconfigurable

2007-11-18 Thread ale

Package: jde
Version: 2.3.5.1-2
Severity: serious
Justification: Policy 3.5

Hello,

when I tried to upgrade emacs22, I got an error message while configuring

In jde-xref-guess-prefixes:
jde-xref.el:181:87:Warning: value returned from (file-directory-p (concat
base-path / package-path / dir)) is unused

Outdated speedbar 1.0pre3 shadowed to meet minimum version 1.0.1
/usr/share/emacs22/site-lisp/speedbar added to `load-path'

In toplevel form:

emacs21 failed at /usr/lib/emacsen-common/emacs-install line 28, TSORT
line 45.

this means the dependency on speedbar is insufficient (needs higher
version).

When I installed speedbar (=1.0pre4-2), I got a different error message

In jde-xref-guess-prefixes:
jde-xref.el:181:87:Warning: value returned from (file-directory-p (concat
base-path / package-path / dir)) is unused
jde-xref.el:181:87:Warning: value returned from (file-directory-p (concat

/usr/share/emacs22/site-lisp/cedet-common/ added to `load-path'

In toplevel form:

emacs21 failed at /usr/lib/emacsen-common/emacs-install line 28, TSORT

This is a big problem because it prevents configuration of emacs.

Jiri Palecek

Do not installed it in /usr/lib32, but in /emul/ia32-linux/usr/lib

Uploading 3.6-10 momentarily. I should probably try to find a new
maintainer for ICU. I have no amd64 system to test on, and
debian-admin has not installed prerequisites on pergolesi for me to be
able to test there. I usually test my uploads very thoroughly, but I
have no way to test this. There seems to be an endless stream of bug
reports for things that, if I could have tested properly, I would have
gotten right the first time.

Bug#451748: acpi-support-base: trying to overwrite `/usr/share/acpi-support/policy-funcs', which is also in package acpi-support

On Sun, 18 Nov 2007, Bart Samwel wrote:
Raphael, I've committed a potential fix which adds a few conflicts. I'm
hoping this will get the package managers to do the right thing --

this will work? I don't know enough about how smart these tools are
 nowadays...

No, please re-read the Debian policy section 7.5.

In this case, we only need to add Replaces: acpi-support ( 1.103-2) in
acpi-support-base. Because acpi-support-base has to replace one file
provided by those versions of acpi-support. There's no need for a
conflict because the content hasn't changed in an incompatible way. At
most you could use the new Breaks: field (exactly like the Replaces
above) to give a supplementary hint.

It looks like I've done the previous upload in a bit of a hurry and
completely forgot this part indeed...

Cheers,

Reportbug has picked up data from the currently-running, perfectly
functional 2:2.1.0-2 package. I could not run reportbug with 2.2.0-1
installed. All fonts were completely illegible (black boxes) unless I
set Gnome's font rendering preferences to 'monochrome'. At that point,
*most* fonts showed up, but not all, including none in the gnome
terminal. Xterm worked just fine. However, in addition to the font
rendering problems, most icons were either rendered impropperly or
surrounded by black rectangles. Text consoles failed to display at
 all, even with GDM stopped.

Sounds like #439210, which is discussed upstream at
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=11402

Adding the following to the Device section in your xorg.conf could
help:
Option AccelMethod XAA
But it could also degrade other things.

Bug#451647: debian/copyright and actual copyrights

2007-11-18 Thread Ron
On Sun, Nov 18, 2007 at 09:28:28AM +0100, Pierre Habouzit wrote:
OTOH this debian/copyright is clearly deficient in many ways, but stop
accusing him of bad faith, you're just out of your mind.

Thanks Pierre, you've just saved us all from my response to jeff's
wild slander from the hip.

There are two issues here, the important one being -policy compliance,
the other stylistic. Since the bug was raised to red-alert-panic severity
without pointing to a single clear policy violation, I'll ask again for
the sake of our new audience, before I summarily close it by way of reply:

Can someone show me any single MUST in policy that is violated by this
debian/copyright file? Bonus points if you can get them all first time.

Because by my reading, there apparently aren't any.

I don't extrapolate from that to say this is a masterpiece of best
practice, because its actually clearly one of the most appalling
copyright files I've ever seen. Kid's don't clone this at home.
I mean it. This is the kind of boilerplate abuse your parents and
friends warned you about. (even if it is better than some of the
ones Ganneff has to sort through -- that's nothing to brag about)

I can make my excuses for that separately[1], but our law here is
-policy, and if I, the boilerplate maker, ftp-admin, and any number
of other developers have not spotted a violation of it in all the
many years this has looked the way it does -- then we have a quite
different serious bug on our hands we should know more about.

I don't think that is the case though, I do agree this file needs
the same sort of treatment the Smith inquisition recently gave the
rest of the package text, and that will be done, but its probably
not a job for -legal, and clearly not 'serious' in the BTS sense.

Cheers,
Ron

[1] - Ok then, you asked for it:

This package started out (intended) as an uncertain mash-up of
various tablet related things from various sources. Right now
it really is mostly just the linuxwacom driver, and I'm mostly
hacking on it vicariously at present since the kernel driver is
sound, and other folks are the XOrg experts where the trouble is.
The copyright file apparently hasn't been polished since then
and just contains the minimum required to cover the things that
were going in there (and some fairly stupid typos). It makes
sense to buff it up a bit now that things have a fairly stable
form established. All the original attributions and licences
are kept with the relevant source, this is just the cover page
in the binary, and since it clearly has almost no additional
information than the minimum required of it, I'd expect any
wise user would not try to infer any such things from that
nothingness and quickly look elsewhere for them instead.

Bug#451647: debian/copyright and actual copyrights

Thanks Pierre, you've just saved us all from my response to jeff's
 wild slander from the hip.

There are two issues here, the important one being -policy compliance,
the other stylistic. Since the bug was raised to red-alert-panic severity
without pointing to a single clear policy violation, I'll ask again for
the sake of our new audience, before I summarily close it by way of reply:

Can someone show me any single MUST in policy that is violated by this
debian/copyright file? Bonus points if you can get them all first time.

4.5. Copyright: `debian/copyright'
--

Every package must be accompanied by a verbatim copy of its copyright
and distribution license in the file
 `/usr/share/doc/package/copyright' (see Section 12.5, `Copyright
information' for further details). Also see Section 2.3, `Copyright
considerations' for further considerations relayed to copyrights for
 packages.

Copyright: GPL is wrong. GPL is the license; the debian/copyright file
needs to list the copyright, which is a statement of the copyright *holder*
and the year it was written.

Bug#451818: kuickshow displays garbage

2007-11-18 Thread Rémi Denis-Courmont
Package: kuickshow
Version: 4:3.5.8-2
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

Hello,

Since the last 3.5.8, kuikshow displays total garbage when opening a
JPEG file. The same file works fine under GIMP.
It also works file inside Konqueror, so I assume the problem is not
KDE-wide.

Alas downgrading to testing (4:3.5.7-4+lenny1) does not seem to fix the
problem either ?!

Hi,

currently I cannot upload packages because my gnupg key has expired. I
have uploaded my updated key to keyring.debian.org and opened ticket
#224 at rt.debian.org. I did not get a response and I cannot see my own
ticket in RT (which might be considered as a bug of its own). I open
this bug in our public bug tracking system because our social contract
tells us 'we will not hide problems'. I see my problem as some kind of
denial of service failure in our infrastructure. I am unable to fix any
RC bugs in packages (like security problems). That is why I set the
severity of this bug to serious.

Please do not close or ignore that bug if you think it is assigned to
the wrong package. Please reassign or forward it to the one who can
actually fix the problem and Cc: me.

Hmm, we do have sponsoring... so the severity is bogus...

Hmm, you said you already opened a ticket, which is the right way to
contact the keyring maintainer... I already prodded the keyring
maintainer to take action and he promissed to look at it, but apparantly
didn't do that up to now...

Anyway, I had a patch already in the svn repository. But I will wait for
some other things to pile up ;-)

Bug#451849: openoffice.org-gnome: wiping out contents of files on shared drives when opening

2007-11-18 Thread Tim Richardson
Package: openoffice.org-gnome
Version: 1:2.3.0.dfsg-2
Severity: grave
Justification: causes non-serious data loss

When opening files on a shared folder (in one case, a Windows share, in
another case, a share from another Debian box) the file is zeroed out
when the file is opened. Irretrievable data loss. No warning.
Something to do with gnome Vfs perhaps. The error occurs in Writer and
Calc (the only two parts of openoffice.org I tested).
I saw this happen with a number of small documents that opened just fine
if they were first copied to the local hard drive.

I'm uploading a new version with an extra call to install-includes, to
avoid extra patching, since this issue will probably be gone in the next
upstream release.

Pawel, if you think I should work around it in some other way just let

   Hello,

Since the last 3.5.8, kuikshow displays total garbage when opening a
JPEG file. The same file works fine under GIMP.
It also works file inside Konqueror, so I assume the problem is not
 KDE-wide.

Alas downgrading to testing (4:3.5.7-4+lenny1) does not seem to fix the
 problem either ?!

kuickshow works fine here (and in the computers of all the kde team).
maybe a problem with some deps? do you have your system totally up-to-date?

one from resize_window(), probably triggered by your WM), and maybe
show the contents of screen.text before you switch to the second mail?

I still cannot reproduce the bug on one of my machines...

Jan

At that point, I press 'j', and then rxvt crashes.

Bug#445360: rxvt reproducibly crashes with certain mutt behaviour

2007-11-18 Thread Jan Christoph Nordholz
Hi,

How do I get gdb to work with this? I've tried running it until that point,
and then Ctrl+Z it in gdb to be able to type commands, but then:

that's exactly the way to do it (I use CTRL+C, but that shouldn't matter).
The problem is that rxvt is built with too little debugging info, regardless
of the contents of $DEB_BUILD_OPTIONS. (Yep, that's my fault.)

For debugging purposes I've rebuilt with the following modification in
debian/rules:

] build.stamp:
] dh_testdir
]
] ./configure $(CFG_BASE) --without-xpm
] echo #define PTYS_ARE_GETPT 1 config.h
] $(MAKE) CFLAGS='$(CFLAGS) -g3 -O0' all clock
^^^
That should make gdb understand all the structures and typedefs that
the rxvt headers introduce.

Alternatively you can work on the bare metal if you know the size of your
terminal (TermWin.nrow, usually 24) and your saveLines setting (seems to be
500 in your case):

(gdb) p (char *[24])*((void **)screen + 500)

Bug#445360: rxvt crash

2007-11-18 Thread Jan Christoph Nordholz
Ah,

forgot one thing, to avoid a misunderstanding, because you quoted
my gdb output: those NULL pointers are in _your_ session. I
extracted that from your second core file.
The contents of the display have already been partially replaced
at the time of the crash... the lines above the five 0x0s are
part of the second mail, the lines below belong to the first one,
and the last line containing the status bar has already been
cleared by mutt, too.

In my tests I also get PGP sig could not be verified, but I don't
have 0x0 pointers in the middle of the .text and .rend arrays. I'd be
glad if I had, because then I had something to debug. ;)

Bug#451873: mongrel: Mongrel fails to start because http11.so is in fact a win32 DLL

2007-11-18 Thread David Anderson
Package: mongrel
Version: 1.1.1-1
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

After installing Mongrel, attempting to start it from Rails results in the
following traceback:

Upon investigation, both `file` and `strings` agree:
/usr/lib/ruby/1.8/http11.so is a win32 DLL, not an ELF library. As such, it
obviously entirely fails to function on a linux system.

Further investigation shows that a working ELF version of the library is
installed in /usr/lib/ruby/1.8/i486-linux/, but the broken DLL version
sitting in /usr/lib/ruby/1.8 takes precedence, and causes Mongrel to fail.

I've attempted to rebuild the package from source, with the same result:
the build process pulls in a win32 version of the library and installs it
in a way that masks the working ELF version. The win32 library is located
in the lib/ subdirectory of the debianized source tree. Removing that copy
and rebuilding results in a working package.

I therefore believe that the precompiled win32 http11.so should be removed
from the package's source tree to fix this.

... reveals that those buffers that the second mail was already written to all
point to different addresses, i.e. they have been reallocated - the pointers
to the bottom five lines are still untouched.
(Usually these buffers are only reallocated to accommodate size changes of the
terminal window - that's why I suggested setting a breakpoint on scr_reset(),
the function that contains that reallocation code.)

Now I have at least a faint idea what I should be looking for in the source
code... maybe you could speed it up by setting a watchpoint?

1. start rxvt-xterm inside gdb
2. fire up mutt, open the first mail
3. CTRL+C...

] (gdb) p screen.text[TermWin.saveLines]
// check: should be the top line of your window
] (gdb) watch (void *)screen.text[TermWin.saveLines]
] Hardware watchpoint 1: (void *)screen.text[TermWin.saveLines]
] (gdb) c
] Continuing.

4. Try to reproduce the crash.

Now it should not get to the segfault, but interrupt somewhere in between
(exactly at the position where those buffer pointers are altered).
I guess I don't need a core file then - a 'bt full' should provide all
that's necessary to guide my search. ;)

Ah, if you don't have symbols, no problem...

3a. CTRL+C

// assuming once again that TermWin.saveLines == 500:
] (gdb) p (char *)*((void **)screen + 500)
// same check as above: should equal the top line of the rxvt window
] (gdb) watch *((void **)screen + 500)
] Hardware watchpoint 2: *((void **) screen + 500)
] (gdb) c

Thanks for your invaluable help in tracking this one down!

ldbl transition for libfcgi, not seen on [1].

 Therefore, I suggest:

Given the other source packages B-D'ing on libfcgi-dev, it looks like
there are only libfcgi-ruby and lighttpd, which seem OK already.

Yes, confirmed here.

Hi,

Lucas Nussbaum has rebuiltthe whole archive three times on i386 and the
content of your packages builded there differ. This means that the package
which was generated on the fist build contains or doesn't contains several
files
which are or aren't included in the package which build two or three times.

See the report and the url for details:

Files in first .changes but not in second
-
/usr/share/games/locale/pl/LC_MESSAGES/kanatest.mo

The full build-log can be found at:
http://people.debian.org/~lucas/logs/2007/doublebuild-09-05/failed-debdiff

About the archive rebuild: The rebuild was done on about 50 AMD64 nodes
of the Grid'5000 platform, using a clean chroot containing a sid i386
environment. Internet was not accessible from the build systems. All
packages have been rebuilt twice in a row, with unpack, build, clean,
build.

Please read the mail of Martin Zobel-Helas on debian-devel [0], for a
explanation
for this mass bug filling.

Greetings
Patrick Winnertz

It appears so; that's the only difference between 0.999-1.0.0-p3-3 and
what I'm running on my backup MX.

Bug#451849: openoffice.org-gnome: wiping out contents of files on shared drives when opening

2007-11-18 Thread Tim Richardson
I noticed it in the last few days. 2.3.0.dfsg-1 and -2 came fast after
one another, but it would have very likely been one of those. I don't
often edit documents on the machine running sid, but I do sometimes and
documents getting wiped out is a bug that is quite noticeable.

Something to do with gnome Vfs perhaps. The error occurs in Writer and
Calc (the only two parts of openoffice.org I tested).
I saw this happen with a number of small documents that opened just fine
if they were first copied to the local hard drive.

And since when does that happen? With the upgrade to 2.3.0.dfsg-1 or
later or before it (i.e.. with 2.2.1-x or 2.3.0-x)?

Unfortunately I don't really have either nfs nor smb here to test
 currently so...
I'll ask upstream whether this is known...

 Rene

Bug#451889: FIXED: netselect was unable to find a mirror

2007-11-18 Thread Kevin Schultz
Package: netselect-apt
Version: 0.3.ds1-10
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

I noticed after installing a new version of Debian Etch that netselect-apt
fails with the message:

netselect was unable to find a mirror, this probably means that
you are behind a firewall and it is blocking traceroute.

It seems the Perl code within run_netselect() fails to parse the HTML of the
Debian worldwide mirror sites page at http://www.debian.org/mirror/mirrors_full
because that page no longer contains \n\n delimiters.

I resolved the problem by modifying run_netselect() to use brbr instead
(highlighted):

run_netselect()
{
SEARCH=$1
PROTO=$2
netselect -v -s 1 $(cat $infile \
| perl -n -e '
$/=brbr;
while(){
  next if $_ !~ /Site:/;
  if( m@'$SEARCH':.*a href=('$PROTO'://.*?)@i ){
print($1\n);
  }
}') \
| awk '{print $2}'
}

I also removed the check for Archive Architectures, since the phrase no longer
appears on the page. Perhaps this is needed, however?

I've attached a patch to this e-mail with the changes. I created it with the
following commands:

claude:~/tmp$ find old new
old
old/netselect-apt
new
new/netselect-apt

claude:~/tmp$ diff -Naur old new netselect-apt.patch

Also, I noticed after patching netselect-apt that running netselect-apt
occassionally fails due to negative values for netselect field host-num_out,
but this is a bug for the netselect package, not netselect-apt .

Please let me know if you have any comments, questions, or concerns.

Sincerely,

Kevin

Bug#451873: mongrel: Mongrel fails to start because http11.so is in fact a win32 DLL

2007-11-18 Thread Filipe

On Mon, 19 Nov 2007, David Anderson wrote:

Upon investigation, both `file` and `strings` agree:
/usr/lib/ruby/1.8/http11.so is a win32 DLL, not an ELF library. As such, it
obviously entirely fails to function on a linux system.

Huh!? Whoa. for some reason upstream is shipping http11.so for windows
and http11.jar into sources lib dir. But this only applies to upstrea
tgz file and not for the gem file - this explain why it was not detected
so far. gonna fix this in the upstream jar and then upload a new version
here.

Thanks for the report!
