Package: linux-2.6
Version: 2.6.18.dfsg.1-12etch2
Severity: critical

This is also on the kernel's bugzilla (
http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=7388)

It happens at random interval (1 out of 20 times), when doing a "cryptsetup
luksOpen". After that, as soon as the file (/dev/mapper/xxx) is accessed,
the oops appears. I'm able to reproduce it easily.

Here's the message from the kernel :

Package: linux-2.6

Severity: grave
Forwarded: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

sparc64 kernels produces unkillable dpkg-query processes (only seen in a
buildd environment yet). Each process sucks one cpu and 3GiB of memory.
Even the OOM killer is not able to kill them.

This problem exists up to 2.6.21 (and most likely also .22) and makes it
mostly impossible to run a reliable buildd.

The problem was forwarded to upstream[1] but no response yet.

Severity: serious
Package: linux-2.6
Version: 2.6.20-3
User: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Usertags: nonfree-doc rfc

Hi!

This source package contains the following files from the
IETF under non-free license terms:

pkg linux-2.6 ver 2.6.20-3
  linux-2.6-2.6.20/Documentation/netlabel/draft-ietf-cipso-ipsecurity-01.txt

The license on RFC/I-Ds is not DFSG-free, see:
 * http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=199810
 * http://release.debian.org/removing-non-free-documentation
 * http://wiki.debian.org/NonFreeIETFDocuments

The etch release policy says binary and source packages must each be free:
 * http://release.debian.org/etch_rc_policy.txt

The severity is serious, because this violates the Debian policy:
 * http://www.debian.org/doc/debian-policy/ch-archive.html#s-dfsg

There are (at least) three ways to fix this problem. In order of
preference:

1. Ask the author of the RFC to re-license the RFC under a free
license. A template for this e-mail request can be found at
   http://wiki.debian.org/NonFreeIETFDocuments

2. Remove the non-free material from the source, e.g., by re-packaging
the upstream archive and adding 'dfsg' to the Debian package
   version name.

3. Move the package to non-free.

General discussions are kindly requested to take place on debian-legal
or debian-devel in the thread with Subject: "Non-free IETF RFC/I-Ds in
source packages".

Thanks,
Simon

Bug#454348: m-a creates a package which is already in the deb pool - conflicting package names

2007-12-04 Thread Patrick Matthäi

Package: virtualbox-ose-source
Version: 1.5.2-dfsg2-3
Severity: grave

Hello,

currently in the sid main pool exists a package named for example
virtualbox-ose-modules-2.6.22-3-k7 which contains the following data:

gnu:~# dpkg -L virtualbox-ose-modules-2.6.22-3-k7
/.
/usr
/usr/share
/usr/share/doc
/usr/share/doc/virtualbox-ose-modules-2.6.22-3-k7
/usr/share/doc/virtualbox-ose-modules-2.6.22-3-k7/changelog.Debian.gz
/usr/share/doc/virtualbox-ose-modules-2.6.22-3-k7/copyright
/lib
/lib/modules
/lib/modules/2.6.22-3-k7
/lib/modules/2.6.22-3-k7/extra
/lib/modules/2.6.22-3-k7/extra/virtualbox-ose
/lib/modules/2.6.22-3-k7/extra/virtualbox-ose/virtualbox-ose.ko

On the other side, I've to create with modul-assistent the vboxdrv
kernel modul, so I had installed virtualbox-ose-source. Then I have to
create the module for example with:

# m-a a-i virtualbox-ose

This creates a package called virtualbox-ose-modules-2.6.22-3-k7, too!
The content of the package differs from the one of the repository:

gnu:~# dpkg -L virtualbox-ose-modules-2.6.22-3-k7
/.
/usr
/usr/share
/usr/share/doc
/usr/share/doc/virtualbox-ose-modules-2.6.22-3-k7
/usr/share/doc/virtualbox-ose-modules-2.6.22-3-k7/changelog.Debian.gz
/usr/share/doc/virtualbox-ose-modules-2.6.22-3-k7/copyright
/lib
/lib/modules
/lib/modules/2.6.22-3-k7
/lib/modules/2.6.22-3-k7/misc
/lib/modules/2.6.22-3-k7/misc/vboxdrv.ko

So in the package created from m-a is my vboxdrv kernel module, which is
needed for virtualbox.

The version of the m-a created package is: 1.5.2-dfsg2-3+2
The one of the Debian main pool is: 2.6.22+1.5.2-dfsg2-9

So every time I had successful installed the kernel module package, apt
upgrade will replace the package with the one from the main pool, where
the kernel module is missing and so on I can't use virtualbox.

Package: libc6
Version: 2.5-9
Arch: sparc64
Severity: important

Hello,

I have seen a lot of troubles with all programs that use threads on a
Sun U80/smp running debian testing.

clamd, bind, milter-greylist, mimedefang, fail2ban and a lot of other
multithreaded programs stop with dead lock. They don't die, but remain
in sleep state (mutex trouble ?). This trouble appear when I have
installed libc6 2.5-9. Kernel is 2.6.20.11.

JKB

for a debian kernel.

Hi,
Please have a look at:

This is really a critical thing if sing was installed with
suid 0 it allows every user on the system to get root access
and/or to overwrite arbitrary files.
Please fix.

A CVE id for this issue is pending, I'll add it to this bug
report if I got it.

Yes I saw this when I tested this bug, however I disagree
here because the dialog just says:
"allows non-root users to send spoofed ICMP messages from
your machine.". This does not say anything that every user
could get root access with this.
Kind regards
Nico

The assertion by the security researcher above is incorrect, both
the packages in Sarge and Etch have a debconf question, which warns
prominently about the dangers of a setuid sing binary and which
defaults to no.

Your package fails to build with GCC 4.2. Version 4.2 has not been
released yet but I'm building with a snapshot in order to find errors
and give people an advance warning. The bug below is in your package
and not because I'm using a snapshot of the compiler so please take a
look at it. You can reproduce this with the gcc-snapshot package.

debhelper should be in Build-depends not in Build-depends-indep since
debhelper scripts are called in the clean target.

According to the policy:

Build-Depends, Build-Conflicts

The Build-Depends and Build-Conflicts fields must be satisfied when
any of the following targets is invoked: build, clean, binary,
binary-arch, build-arch, build-indep and binary-indep.

No, it was my first-time installation and trying to remove the ~/.megahal
directory doesn't help...

Does anyone have an idea how to fix this? I scanned trough the code, but did
not find a "quick" solution, besides disabling the /tmp/audacity1.2-
altogether.

I also checked upstream CVS and they don't have a fix yet.

I'm running megahal just fine here.

Do you have a ~/.megahal directory from a previous version? If so, try
to temporarily remove it.

Hi,
the following CVE (Common Vulnerabilities & Exposures) id was
published for ardour.

CVE-2007-4974[0]:
| Heap-based buffer overflow in libsndfile 1.0.17 and earlier might
| allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a FLAC file with
| crafted PCM data containing a block with a size that exceeds the
| previous block size.

If you fix this vulnerability please also include the CVE id
in your changelog entry.

As ardour has a code copy of libsndfile which is affected by
this, ardour is vulnerable. I looked at ardours build log
and this library is at least built. If it is not used to
link against please close this bug.

For further information:

Kind regards
Nico

The file comes from libc6-i686 version 2.6.1-1. According to the symlink
it has been installed on 2007-08-21 (ie the date it migrates to
testing). Could you please look to /var/log/dpkg.log.* if you see a
mention of libc6-i686 around this date?

Well that's the issue then, please remove the whole directory. As a side
note having libc6-i686 installed is probably a good idea ;)

I have no clue why the files are here though, probably a dpkg bug (???)

Bug#454309: pam_limits.so malfunction

2007-12-04 Thread Emjay
Package: libpam-modules
Version: 0.79-4
Severity: grave

adding "session required pam_limits.so" to /etc/pam.d/login results in
limits beeing taken ONLY from /etc/security/limits.conf - all default values
are flushed.

PROBLEMS

1) This is a minor security issue because the default configuration is an
empty (only commented lines) limits.conf (thus leaving almost no limits in
place where the user tries to increase security/useablility of the system and
by default doing exactly the opposite).
2) Adding only some rules is not enough, adding all default limits again is
required to restore default behaviour.
3) Removing pam_limits.so from /etc/pam.d/* also restores default behaviour.
4) Severity was chosen based on the pam_limits.so not the entire package.

SUGGESTION

- no idea what is causing this bug, probably an issue with pam_limits.so
- should it be the default behaviour and not be considered a bug I suggest
there should be a BIG WARNING in the pam.d/login file regarding this matter.

Please note, that this error is architecture independent and that the
information given below is only about where the error was verified.

Bug#454158: Unhandled Exception on startup, tomboy won't start

2007-12-04 Thread Arthur Petitpierre
If I move away my ~/.tomboy directory, I can start tomboy again without
any error... To get my notes back, I just had to copy the old *.note files
into the new ~/.tomboy and it worked.

okay so there is an issue with the optimized version of the library.
touching /etc/ld.so.nohwcap tells the linker to avoid the use of
optimized libraries.

so maybe not.

are you using pax execshield or anything like that ? Given that you
maintain it I suppose you do. If yes, could you please try with a stock
debian kernel ? If it's because execshield then we'll downgrade the bug
to important so that the libc can migrate, and as soon as it migrated
we'll rework the patch used for #397020 and reinclude it.

Bug#454158: Same here

Package: tomboy
Version: 0.8.2-1

--- Please enter the report below this line. ---

Just a 'me-too' report: reinstalling the libmono-addins* didn't make much of a
difference (I removed tomboy and purged the mono packages just in case).

Cheers,
Carlos

Hi,
the following CVE (Common Vulnerabilities & Exposures) id was
published for libcairo.

CVE-2007-5503[0]:
| Multiple integer overflows in Cairo before 1.4.12 might allow remote attackers
| to execute arbitrary code, as demonstrated using a crafted PNG image, which is
| not properly handled by the read_png function.

Until now this CVE seems to be reserved, see
http://nvd.nist.gov/nvd.cfm?cvename=CVE-2007-5503 in the meanwhile.

Patches can be found on:
http://gitweb.freedesktop.org/?p=cairo;a=commitdiff;h=5c7d2d14d78e4dfb1ef6d2c40f0910f177e07360
http://gitweb.freedesktop.org/?p=cairo;a=commitdiff;h=e49bcde27f88e21d5b8037a0089a226096f6514b

I did not check if the stable version is also prone to this.

If you fix this vulnerability please also include the CVE id
in your changelog entry.

For further information:

Yes, that fixes it!

Attempting the upgrade again makes the problem re-appear, and the
upgrade fails with the following messages:

Setting up libc6 (2.7-3) ...

and two more segfaults in iconvconfig and update-rc.d.

Hi,

The new GDAL in sid (1.4.3) should not enter testing. This bug is an
attempt to keep it out.

Bug#454259: Installation fails, seems user "gnugk" is missing

2007-12-04 Thread Masayuki Hatta
Package: gnugk
Version: 2:2.2.6-6
Severity: grave

Hi,

Installation of gnugk fails with the following message:

Setting up gnugk (2:2.2.6-6) ...
Starting H.323 gatekeeper: start-stop-daemon: user `gnugk' not found
 (Success)
invoke-rc.d: initscript gnugk, action "start" failed.
dpkg: error processing gnugk (--configure):
subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 2
Errors were encountered while processing:
 gnugk
E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)

This is my first time to install this package. Seems user "gnugk"
should be created in preinst or somewhere?

Best regards,
MH

This is clearly a differentl problem than the one that has been
reported. The only similar point is that it is unreproducible here.

What is the state of your system?

Hi,

Since the situation hasn't evolved, I am now orphaning this package.
I still plan to request its removal in the near future, but this
orphaning could allow someone to adopt the package if appropriate.

Please reply to this bug report if you feel that this package shouldn't
be removed.

Please also reply if you think that this package _should_ be removed, as
this will allow to make the process quicker.

Thank you,

Hi,

Since the situation didn't improve, and the maintainer never answered
this bug report, I'm now orphaning the package, as originally suggested.

Thank you,
