Using current (2.6.22) kernels in Debian leads to an error when
shutting down the machine if some disks are managed by libata drivers:

DISK MIGHT NOT BE SPUN DOWN PROPERLY. UPDATE SHUTDOWN UTILITY.

The details are explained there: http://linux-ata.org/shutdown.html

I think shutdown should be updated to fix this.

The machine is a Dell Latitude C610 running testing and a git (2.6.22-rc2)
kernel, using ata_piix drivers from libata to access the ICH-3 controller.

Bug#458318: Three security issues in vlc

2007-12-30 Thread Stefan Fritsch
Package: vlc
Version: 0.8.6.c-4
Severity: grave
Tags: security
Justification: user security hole

These pages

http://mailman.videolan.org/pipermail/vlc-devel/2007-December/037726.html
https://trac.videolan.org/vlc/ticket/1371

describe a security issue which allows to write to arbitrary files with
mozilla-plugin-vlc.

According to http://www.securityfocus.com/archive/1/485488/30/0/threaded , there
are two more unfixed security issues in vlc:

A] buffer-overflow in the handling of the subtitles
B] format string in the web interface

AFAIK there are no CVE ids for these issues yet.

Reopen (actually, I've done that).

FWIW, I can get the binary in the i386 .deb to segfault reliably, but the
amd64 binary is fine (that got autobuilt) and all local builds, i386 or
amd64, are also fine.

It's looking suspiciously like b0rkage in the uploaded i386 .deb and,
therefore, in the build environment used to create it. Not my build
environment, though, or I'd be looking into it right now :-|

It doesn't happen on amd64 and i386, I don't have an arm machine here to
reproduce this problem.

This bug might be fixed in 5.0.51-1 already, unfortunately the testsuite
failed on arm, so there's no package of 5.0.51-1 available for that arch
yet.

Bug#452702: [dpatch-maintainers] Bug#452702: Bug#452702: Using the -a -0 options twice to the same patch makes it beeing overridden

2007-12-30 Thread Sandro Tosi
Why do you have -0 twice?
What do you want this command-line option to do?

I think he's just reusing the command in the history of his shell
(like sometimes I do too: create a
patch+build+check+little-fix-on-the-patch looping)

 I would expect

 dpatch-edit-patch -a -0 01_foo

and yes, you don't need to specify -a or -0 the second time.

 dpatch-edit-patch 01_foo

 would do the correct thing.

I think here we have to ignore the -a option for an existing patch,
and simply simulate the behaviour of dpatch-edit-patch 01_foo
(applying until previous patch than 01_foo and merging 01_foo for
changes). Junichi/Daniel, would you think this could be the way to go?
If so, I'll provide a patch to fix the problem.

The Debian changelog is incomplete, amongst others it misses the entry
of the current stable package 2:0.94.2-1. Instead it includes irrelevant
changes from the Ubuntu package.

Bug#458383: ipython: documentation not DFSG-free

2007-12-30 Thread Bernd Zeimetz
Package: ipython
Version: 0.8.1-1
Severity: serious
Justification: Policy 2.2.1

I'm filing this bug as I don't have the time to fix it completely now.
I've started to work on it, but I doubt I will have the time to work on it
during the next weeks.

Not sure when it started, but ipython ships
- html documentation generated with latex2html (which is non-free)
- no sources for the documentation (manual.pdf is created from the same
  source as the html files).

Although the official tarball is missing the sources, they're available
in upstream's svn, which is freely accessible. Repackaging their sources
from svn should fix this bug for us as long as they don't ship the
sources of their documentation.

Cheers,

Bernd

arbitrary code via a crafted, password-protected archive.

See [1] for details. On the day of the public release of the advisory, unrar
3.7.3 has been released, which implies that version 3.7.2 is vulnerable (there
is no detailed changelog, however).

A new rar version has also been released.

Severity critical because rar or unrar is called by amavisd-new in its default

turns this issue into a remote arbitrary code execution vulnerability.

Bug#458366: tbb_2.0r014-2(hppa/unstable): FTBFS: uses 'arch', which is gone

There was an error while trying to autobuild your package:

  Automatic build of tbb_2.0r014-2 on bld-3 by sbuild/hppa 98
  Build started at 20071230-0701

This package should not be built on hppa. The error you are seeing is
deceptive because I am already patching the package to use 'uname -m' in
place of arch. Please ensure that the package is not being built on
architectures besides i386, amd64 and ia64.

Here is the relevant IRC log:

14:49 el_cubano Could someone look at #446023 and maybe explain why a
package which is i386 ia64 amd46 all is being
   built on hppa?
14:50 Q_ el_cubano:
14:50 Q_ Sure you're talking about the right bug number?
14:51 el_cubano Of course it's the wrong bug number :-)
14:51 el_cubano 458366
14:51 Q_ That doesn't look like it at all. :)
14:51 adamm hey, tbb :) hehe
14:51 vorlon short answer is, buildds don't trust maintainers to set arch:
strings right, they use
Packages-arch-specific.
14:51 el_cubano Well, in 458366 lamont points me to 446023
14:52 el_cubano vorlon: So, what do I do about it. Can I just close the bug?
14:52 vorlon as lamont is one of the maintainers of Packages-arch-specific,
you should try to come to an agreement
with him about whether this package should be built
14:52 phil vorlon: And dpkg-buildpackage breaks late, not early, right?
14:52 adamm Architecture: any
14:53 adamm http://ftp.de.debian.org/debian/pool/main/t/tbb/tbb_2.0r014-2.dsc
14:53 adamm could that be the problem?
14:53 vorlon no
14:53 phil Well they are i386 amd64 ia64 in control.
14:53 vorlon adamm: well, it's /a/ problem, but it's what dpkg-source does
when you have an arch: all package plus
an arch: foo bar baz package
14:53 Q_ I'm guessging that tbb-examples is arch all
14:53 phil But I thought that this is checked at some time in build and then
it just breaks.
14:53 vorlon Q_: yes
14:53 el_cubano Yes, I specify an Architecture stanza for each binary package
14:54 el_cubano vorlon: The package will in fact only compile for i386, ia64
or amd64. If it does not detect one of
those architectures, then the build will just fail with an
error.
14:55 el_cubano Q_: That's right.
14:55 Q_ el_cubano: It would be better if it said: Architecture not
supported instead of Architecture not
detected.
14:55 vorlon el_cubano: why does it do that? (this is the information that
should be passed on to the P-a-s
maintainers)
14:55 el_cubano vorlon: I see. It is a threading library written by intel
and so those are the only three arches it
   supports.
14:56 vorlon well, ok
14:56 el_cubano Q_: I'll take that under advisement and consider patching
the Makefile
14:56 adamm The point to the other bug report is irrelevant as it doesn't
apply in this case.
14:56 el_cubano adamm: That is correct, espcially since I patch the
Makefiles to use uname instead of arch.
14:56 el_cubano lamont just saw that make clean failed and that had to do
with it since it calls arch
14:57 adamm dpkg-architecture may be more debian way.
14:57 adamm For example, I'm not sure if Hurd i386 or BSD kernels are
supported by tbb.
14:58 adamm but that doesn't matter as Architecture: line should suffice.
14:58 Q_ el_cubano: I suggest you add a check in your rules file and give an
error if it's not a supported arch.
14:58 el_cubano Except that is already done by the makefile
15:00 vorlon right, I don't see any need for an additional check besides the
one already provided by upstream
15:00 -!- noshadow [EMAIL PROTECTED] has quit [Quit: ...]
15:01 adamm I guess there are bugs with build and install scripts, but I
have no idea where to report bugs against
that software. For example, the debian archive installer thingy
will not allow bz2 compressed deb
archives into Sid without predent on pre-Woody dpkg version.
15:01 el_cubano vorlon: So, email lamont about Packages-arch-specific ?
15:01 vorlon yeah

Bug#458383: upstream

I sent the attached email to upstream (I forgot to CC this bug).

The email didn't yet show up in:

maybe I will have to subscribe to that list. I hate so many mailman

Hi,

while packaging ipython in Debian, we run across this problem:

http://projects.scipy.org/ipython/ipython/ticket/204

do you think it could be please fixed in the next release?

As written in the ticket, the easiest solution is to include the
sources for the documentation in the tarball. The rest can be handled
by the Debian maintainer easily.

Thanks a lot!
Ondrej

P.S. Please CC me.

Bug#458396: FTBFS because due to missing apt-transport-https libraries

2007-12-30 Thread Michael Gilbert
Package: apt
Version: 0.7.9
Severity: serious
Tags: patch
Justification: no longer builds from source

the apt-transport-https deb currently does not build because
libapt-pkg-libc6.7-6.so.4.6 is not in the right location when dh_shlibs
is run.

as a temporary fix for the problem, i modified debian/rules to copy the
missing libraries from the build directory to
debian/apt-transport-https/usr/lib. see attached diff.

Hello,

1) cacti is explicit GPLv2 only, but your debian/copyright points to
/usr/share/common-licenses/GPL, which is an symlink to the GPLv3+.. It
should be replaced with /usr/share/common-licenses/GPL-2.

2) You should add a Copyright: line to your debian/copyright, like:
   Copyright: 2004-2007 The Cacti Group
3) You only listed there the licenses of the cacti stuff itself. But for
example the stuff in lib/adodb has another license with another upstream
author!
You may have to recheck all files included in the tarball and list them
in debian/copyright.

With the latest upgrade to 0.9.48 wine started crashing the Checkpoint client
software (aka SmartDashboard). I am pasting the error I get, below. I have also
tried getting the latest deb file from winehq (0.9.49), but this didn't work
either. Here is the error I get:

A crash in one application is not really a grave bug; it neither causes
data loss, introduces a security hole, nor does it make the package
unusable for anyone else who's running other applications.

Does it still fail in 0.9.52?

Bug#453790: Patch to fix the FTBFS: dpkg-shlibdeps RC bug

2007-12-30 Thread Anibal Avelar
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

tags 453790 patch
thanks

I added one patch to fix this RC bug:

glide: FTBFS: dpkg-shlibdeps: failure: couldn't find library
libglide.so.2 needed by debian/glide2-bin/usr/lib/glide2/bin/test05
(its RPATH is '').

The problem is because there is a program called test05 that tries to
link with libglide.so.2.60, but you changed the name to
libglide_h3.so.2.60. However, if you remains the original name you
also need to create the symbolic links (libglide.so.2 and
libglide.so).

The patch tries to fix the bug, but may be there is more optimal
solutions. I changed the LD_LIBRARY_PATH for dpkg-shlibdeps. But may
be you can copy the library libglide.so.2 instead to modify the
LD_LIBRARY_PATH.

Regards.
