Bug#461214: building libldap2 also depends on 'g++' too
Hi, Torsten Landschoff [EMAIL PROTECTED] [20080117 23:15:23 +0100]: [snipped] Please consider using the debuild command from the devscripts package. It uses dpkg-buildpackage internally, but first checks if the build dependencies are satisfied. The libldap2 sources do not build-depend on g++, because the build-essential package depends on it which should be installed any time when building a Debian package. See section 4.2 of the debian policy here: http://www.debian.org/doc/debian-policy/ch-source.html Can't argue with that :) Do close this 'bug' report then. The reason for this is the following code in naref.h: /* Rather than play elaborate and complicated games with * platform-dependent endianness headers, just detect the platforms we * support. This list is simpler and smaller, yet still quite * complete. */ #if (defined(__x86_64) defined(__linux__)) || defined(__sparcv9) || \ defined(__powerpc64__) /* Win64 and Irix should work with this too, but have not been * tested */ # define NASAL_NAN64 #elif defined(_M_IX86) || defined(i386)|| defined(__x86_64) || \ defined(__ia64__) || defined(_M_IA64) || defined(__ARMEL__) # define NASAL_LE #elif defined(__sparc) || defined(__ppc__) ||defined(__PPC) || \ defined(__mips) || defined(__ARMEB__) # define NASAL_BE #else # error Unrecognized CPU architecture #endif ... which is a cop-out, and a serious regression because the old code built and ran fine on all architectures. The above code should have __alpha__ added to the NASAL_LE list, and __hppa__, __s390__, and __s390x__ added to the NASAL_BE list. BTW, according to data.h, the NASAL_NAN64 option exists to support stupid union tricks: // On 64 bit systems, Nasal non-numeric references are stored with a // bitmask that sets the top 16 bits. As a double, this is a // signalling NaN that cannot itself be produced by normal numerics // code. The pointer value can be reconstructed if (and only if) we // are guaranteed that all memory that can be pointed to by a naRef // (i.e. all memory returned by naAlloc) lives in the bottom 48 bits // of memory. Linux on x86_64, Win64, Solaris and Irix all have such // policies with address spaces: [...] Linux doesn't document this rigorously, but testing // shows that it allows 47 bits of address space (and current x86_64 // implementations are limited to 48 bits of virtual space anyway). So // we choose 48 as the conservative compromise. So this assumes the kernel will never expose more than 48bits of address space to userspace processes -- a short-sighted and groundless assumption, the reason Linux hasn't documented this rigorously is because there is no such guarantee. The NASAL_NAN64 option should be thrown out for all Linux variants. -- Steve Langasek Give me a lever long enough and a Free OS Debian Developer to set it on, and I can move the world. When you close this bug, don't forget to delete existing symlinks in your preinst scripts. Indeed; this is made clear in file:///usr/share/doc/debian-policy/policy.html/footnotes.html#f83. I'd rather have this relaxed in policy; would it be possible to drop the strict versionning requirements for symlinks? I find the current Gtk dependencies saner than the previous ones which complexified upgrades and were problematic on buildds and end user sid systems due to arch: all / any version mismatches. The symlinks are useful to save space on e.g. live CDs where /usr/share/doc proliferation has a non-negligible cost (some MBs). -- Loïc Minier

I'd rather have this relaxed in policy; would it be possible to drop the strict versionning requirements for symlinks? No, this could cause the copyright file to be inaccurate, in the event the license change between versions and packages come from a different versions. Personnally I would rather mandate that every packages include the copyright file in the deb. There are better way to trim /usr/share/doc for system low on diskspace. Cheers, Bill.

Debian bug tracking system administrator (administrator, Debian Bugs database) ---BeginMessage--- Package: xserver-xorg-core Version: 2:1.1.1-21-etch2 Hello, Today (2008/01/18), with latest Debian 4 (etch) update, some applications refuse to start because of the xserver-xorg-core 2:1.1.1-21-etch2 package. I've tested on 3 machine, and the same problem was present. For example, when I launch rapidsvn, I have the following error: The program 'rapidsvn' received an X Window System error. This probably reflects a bug in the program. The error was 'BadAlloc (insufficient resources for operation)'. (Details: serial 686 error_code 11 request_code 146 minor_code 5) (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously; that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it. Some other application like easyeclipse doesn't work too. To solve the problem, I've downgraded (force version) to the xserver-xorg-core 2:1.1.1-21-etch1 package. ---End Message--- ---BeginMessage--- Source: xorg-server Source-Version: 2:1.4.1~git20080118-1 We believe that the bug you reported is fixed in the latest version of xorg-server, which is due to be installed in the Debian FTP archive: xnest_1.4.1~git20080118-1_i386.deb to pool/main/x/xorg-server/xnest_1.4.1~git20080118-1_i386.deb xorg-server_1.4.1~git20080118-1.diff.gz to pool/main/x/xorg-server/xorg-server_1.4.1~git20080118-1.diff.gz xorg-server_1.4.1~git20080118-1.dsc to pool/main/x/xorg-server/xorg-server_1.4.1~git20080118-1.dsc xorg-server_1.4.1~git20080118.orig.tar.gz to pool/main/x/xorg-server/xorg-server_1.4.1~git20080118.orig.tar.gz xserver-xephyr_1.4.1~git20080118-1_i386.deb to pool/main/x/xorg-server/xserver-xephyr_1.4.1~git20080118-1_i386.deb xserver-xorg-core-dbg_1.4.1~git20080118-1_i386.deb to pool/main/x/xorg-server/xserver-xorg-core-dbg_1.4.1~git20080118-1_i386.deb xserver-xorg-core_1.4.1~git20080118-1_i386.deb to pool/main/x/xorg-server/xserver-xorg-core_1.4.1~git20080118-1_i386.deb xserver-xorg-dev_1.4.1~git20080118-1_i386.deb to pool/main/x/xorg-server/xserver-xorg-dev_1.4.1~git20080118-1_i386.deb xvfb_1.4.1~git20080118-1_i386.deb to pool/main/x/xorg-server/xvfb_1.4.1~git20080118-1_i386.deb A summary of the changes between this version and the previous one is attached. Indeed; I thought about the changelog versions mismatches, but didn't think about copyright which is more criticial; that said, I would guess mismatches would be transient, in sid or when upgrading for example. But well, let's not take the risk indeed. (closing, thanks) The common thing to do in this situation is to ship only the Debian changelog and the copyright file in the /usr/share/doc directory of the other package, along with a pointer to whatever directory has the real documentation. It looks like there are some portability issues in the current code... I got this report on the Debian packages. ---End Message---

Bug#461440: libgtk2.0-0: Must not use a symlink for /usr/share/doc/libgtk2.0-0
Loïc Minier [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: I'd rather have this relaxed in policy; would it be possible to drop the strict versionning requirements for symlinks? The reason for the Policy requirement is the copyright file, so I don't think this can be relaxed without running the risk of getting the legal material for the package wrong. Suppose, for instance, that someone had an old version of one package installed with a different license than the package providing the /usr/share/doc directory. The common thing to do in this situation is to ship only the Debian changelog and the copyright file in the /usr/share/doc directory of the other package, along with a pointer to whatever directory has the real documentation. -- Russ Allbery ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) http://www.eyrie.org/~eagle/

Bug#461469: qbankmanager doesn't find aqhbci backend after upgrade
Package: qbankmanager Version: 0.9.48-1 Severity: grave Justification: renders package unusable Hi, unfortunately after the 3.x upgrade of qbankmanager it doesn't find its aqhbci plugin anymore, which makes it unusable. The list of plugins is empty and also it doesn't show my existing user. I do also get a couple of Account X no longer supported by AqBanking! Another thing is that some of the data seems to have not been copied over to the new .aqbanking dir properly. The booked balance for the account isn't a proper value in .aqbanking, its a rather long value - though maybe thats part of the new format. The settings.conf in .aqbanking also misses the users section from the one in .banking. A fresh user shows the same problems with regard to the hbci plugin. Here's the output from starting qbankmanager after removing .aqbanking and cp -r'ing .banking to .aqbanking: 3:2008/01/18 21-12-35:gwen(748):plugin.c: 358: Plugin AQHBCI not found. 3:2008/01/18 21-12-35:aqbanking(748):banking_online.c: 396: Could not load provider plugin for AQHBCI 4:2008/01/18 21-12-35:aqbanking(748):banking_init.c: 461: Provider AQHBCI not found 3:2008/01/18 21-12-35:gwen(748):plugin.c: 358: Plugin AQHBCI not found. 3:2008/01/18 21-12-35:aqbanking(748):banking_online.c: 396: Could not load provider plugin for AQHBCI 3:2008/01/18 21-12-35:aqbanking(748):account.c: 68: Provider AQHBCI is not available, ignoring account 3:2008/01/18 21-12-35:gwen(748):plugin.c: 358: Plugin AQHBCI not found. 3:2008/01/18 21-12-35:aqbanking(748):banking_online.c: 396: Could not load provider plugin for AQHBCI 3:2008/01/18 21-12-35:aqbanking(748):account.c: 68: Provider AQHBCI is not available, ignoring account 5:2008/01/18 21-12-35:QBankManager(748):app.cpp: 189: Account 1 no longer supported by AqBanking 5:2008/01/18 21-12-35:QBankManager(748):app.cpp: 189: Account 554 no longer supported by AqBanking 5:2008/01/18 21-12-35:QBankManager(748):app.cpp: 189: Account 555 no longer supported by AqBanking 5:2008/01/18 21-12-35:QBankManager(748):app.cpp: 189: Account 556 no longer supported by AqBanking 4:2008/01/18 21-12-35:QBankManager(748):app.cpp: 851: No accounts found in aqbanking. Bug#461472: amule crashed at start time
Package: amule Version: 2.1.3-1 Severity: grave Justification: renders package unusable When tried to start amule, it crashed with the following output: [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ amule Initialising aMule Checking if there is an instance already running... No other instances are running. The program 'amule' received an X Window System error. This probably reflects a bug in the program. The error was 'BadAlloc (insufficient resources for operation)'. (Details: serial 770 error_code 11 request_code 143 minor_code 5) (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously; that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it. To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.) It runs perfectly since I installed some time ago, but today when I tried to run amule it offers me the above output. Thanks for your work. -- System Information: Debian Release: 4.0 APT prefers stable APT policy: (500, 'stable') Architecture: i386 (i686) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Kernel: Linux 2.6.18-5-686 Locale: [EMAIL PROTECTED], [EMAIL PROTECTED] (charmap=ISO-8859-15) Versions of packages amule depends on: ii amule-common 2.1.3-1 common files for the rest of aMule ii libc6 2.3.6.ds1-13etch4 GNU C Library: Shared libraries ii libcrypto++5.2c2a 5.2.1c2a-3General purpose cryptographic shar ii libgcc11:4.1.1-21GCC support library ii libstdc++6 4.1.1-21 The GNU Standard C++ Library v3 ii libwxbase2.6-0 2.6.3.2.1.5 wxBase library (runtime) - non-GUI ii libwxgtk2.6-0 2.6.3.2.1.5 wxWidgets Cross-platform C ++ GUI t ii zlib1g 1:1.2.3-13compression library - runtime Versions of packages amule recommends: ii amule-utils 2.1.3-1utilities for aMule (command-line -- no debconf information -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#458481: status update
Hey there, What's the status on this bug? What's holding an upload? Are there any plans to wait until version 60 is out or another bug got fixed, before uploading? If you need a hand just let me know, I could do a NMU with a patched 58, in case you're just lacking the time to get around to it. Bug#461478: runit: FHS (and as such policy) violation with /var/service/
Package: runit Severity: serious Hi runit violates FHS (and as such policy) having /var/service. It should move it to either var/lib/service or var/run/service, whatever fits more, keeping in mind that var/run might be a tmpfs. -- bye Joerg * HE wants applicants to write about the sex life, to make debian-newmaint more interesting pgpM1KotV3Cme.pgp Description: PGP signature
