The error is sure to occur by the 833rd line, if the source was patched
correctly using jfbterm_0.4.7-7.1.diff.gz.
May I think that you builded with the original source of
jfbterm_0.4.7.orig.tar.gz?

Package: shunit2

The top level makefile assumes that $(PWD) will be in the environment

Bug#472106: sugar: Segfaults after initially entering name

2008-03-21 Thread Jonas Smedegaard
Package: sugar
Version: 0.79.0-4
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

sugar-emulator (and probably sugar-shell directly as well) segfaults right
after initially typing in a username.

The segfault seems to be in python-cairo 1.4.12 - see bug#472103.

As a workaround, a patched python-cairo is available for i386 and amd64 here:

It is also available for lenny, although sugar have not yet arrived there:

Backports of both fixed python-cairo and all core sugar packages is here:

Bug#472103: sugar segfaults with python-cairo 1.4.14 (1.4.0 is ok)

2008-03-21 Thread Jonas Smedegaard
Package: python-cairo
Version: 1.4.12-1
Severity: grave
Tags: security
Justification: user security hole

The Sugar environment segfaults when used with python-cairo 1.4.14.

You should be able to reproduce like this:

 1. Install the packages "sugar" and "xserver-xephyr".
 2. Run "sugar-emulator" as normal user from an X11 terminal-emulator
 3. Type in your name when requested
 4. Switch to console or another virtual desktop and do "killall Xephyr"
 5. Switch back again: There's a segfault.

Using python-cairo 1.4.0-1 works fine.

Recompiling python-cairo 1.4.0-1 against libcairo 1.4.14 works fine too.

Both amd64 and i386 system segfaults, so probably different bug than earlier
reported.

Applying the following patch (which reverts what seems to be the only major
change between 1.4.0 and 1.4.14) fixes the problem too:

--- pycairo-1.4.12.orig/cairo/pycairo-context.c
+++ pycairo-1.4.12/cairo/pycairo-context.c
@@ -82,6 +82,8 @@
return NULL;
 }

+if (type == NULL)
+type = &PycairoContext_Type;
 o = PycairoContext_Type.tp_alloc (type, 0);
 if (o) {
((PycairoContext *)o)->ctx = ctx;

It seems from the changelog that the above causes other problems, but still I
believe it is a major bug that the program segfaults when provided wrong input.

Also, it would sure be nice with some hints on how to change old working code
when the interface changes like this (I tried locating in sugar code or in
hippocanvas what triggers this bug, but without luck so far...).

The bug should be downgrade the severity from grave to important.
After to check the reasons and sources (the responsable is the package
libpcrecpp0). Although the bug should be reassign to the libpcrecpp0
package, I won't do that, I just downgrade the severity and I will
talk with the libpcrecpp0 mantainers to check the solution together (I
just sent a message).

Also seems just happens with not updated environments. I can't
reproduce it. Inside my sid box the program works fine.

Regards.

Bug#465676: I have the same bug with subtitleeditor (0.20.0)

I found the same problem with my package subtitleeditor bug #464704 [1]

Some users has gone this message:

I think the problem is exactly the same described on this bug. The
users had the version 7.4-1+lenny1 and 7.6-1, but I can't reproduce
it. I don't know if the last version 7.6-2 to fix the problem.
The problem was marked how "grave", but I'm thinking to reassign the

Hi Jack,

I intend to NMU your package to fix #470291 and some formating bugs. The patch
is attached and can be found at [1], the package at [2]. Please integrate the
changes into your new package. If the bug is left open in 10 days, I'll
upload the package to DELAYED/7-day (or sooner, if requested by the you).

If you do not wish for this NMU to occur, please send a follow-up in

Bug#472093: xexec: Insecure tempfile

2008-03-21 Thread Moritz Muehlenhoff
Package: xexec
Version: 0.0.3-24
Severity: grave
Tags: security
Justification: user security hole

I've been fixing outstanding GCC 4.3 issues and found this while
looking into the build failure:

--
void Exec::runline()
   {
   ofstream command_file;
   int useless;
   command_file.open("/tmp/exec.tmp", ios::out);

 /* What we're doing here is saving our command
 in a little shell script that will be ran comming
 up here. */

   command_file
 << "#!/bin/sh\n"
 << cline->text();
/* The fun, object orriented STREAM way of
doing things!! woooh */

   command_file.close();// Finish up.

   useless = execlp(SHELL, SHELL, "/tmp/exec.tmp", NULL);
  /* Run shell with command line file as script. */
   }
--

Symlinking /tmp/exec.tmp to any file writable to the user running
xexec will overwrite that file with

#!/bin/sh
name-of-executed-program

Fortunately xexec is almost useless and with hardly any users,
since the functionality is provided by the desktop equivalents
in KDE, GNOME, xfce or a regular xterm:

Description: Run a simple arbitrary command from X
 xexec is a program designed to allow quick and easy access for
 running simple command lines. For example, let's say you wanted to
 start Netscape, but didn't have it on your window manager's menu. Just
 run xexec, and type netscape in the text box, press enter, and there
 you have it. It is especially useful for allowing access to any
 available command via one primary menu entry.

I'll request archive removal, I don't think we need to waste time with
it. But this is a nice example why we need to be more careful about
fringe packages of poor quality: they don't receive any review
for practical purposes.

This package has been in the archive for ten years and the error
is not exactly hard to find, since the package is ridiculously
small: (the 165 lines even include generated MOC)

SLOCDirectory   SLOC-by-Language (Sorted)
165 top_dir cpp=165
6   debian  sh=6
0   doc (none)

Totals grouped by language (dominant language first):
cpp:165 (96.49%)
sh:   6 (3.51%)

Cheers,
Moritz

python-central 0.6 uses now a package and tool independent directory
to store the architecture independent files. Files which were located
in /usr/share/pycentral/site-packages/ are now located in
/usr/share/pyshared. Your package apparently hardcodes the former
location in some places. Please fix the packaging to work with the new
file locations.

This is what I think happened: doko did the check 1-2 days ago (with
the bugged source package, I'd say -9) but reported only today (so the
pkg version is -10, the one that fixed the FTBFS). Hence, I think this
bug report can be closed. Correct me if I'm wrong ;)

Kindly,
Sandro

Hi,

the current version of bzr in sid is 1.2~rc1-1.
bzr-svn has a versioned dependency on bzr (< 1.2~), which makes it
uninstallable in sid.
Please update the bzr-svn package accordingly.

Thanks for the bug report. Could you please specify in more details
what is wrong? The 0.6.0-10 version fixed exactly the problem you
are reporting, so as far as I know, all is fine now with python-scipy.

According to the build logs:

http://buildd.debian.org/pkg.cgi?pkg=python-scipy

It builds just fine on all architectures where the actual built has occured.

Package: squashfs-modules-2.6.24-1-486
Version: 2.6.24+3.3-3
Severity: grave

I have built a sid-based live image using the live-helper package. The
live-helper scripts defaults to creating a squashfs filesystem that somehow can
be synced using aufs. When I test it in qemu (command line qemu -kernel-kqemu
-m 64 -cdrom binary.iso -boot d), I get the following screen output during boot:

Begin: Mounting root filesystem... ...
aufs 20080128
loop: module loaded
squashfs: Unknown symbol sqlzma_init
squashfs: Unknown symbol sqlzma_un
squashfs: Unknown symbol sqlzma_fin
modprobe: FATAL: Error inserting squashfs
(lib/modules/2.6.24-1-486/extra/squashfs/squashfs.ko): Unknown symbol in
module, or unknown parameter (see dmesg)

After that, a busybox shell is started, probably for recovery reasons.

This bug is probably the same as #465183, reported against the squashfs source
package, which - if I understand it right - is not used to produce the binary
squashfs-modules- packages.

Because the bug was found on another (live) system, the system information
below is somewhat obsolete.

Regards,

Mikael Petersson, Falun, Sweden

Apparently quagga also FTBFS without hardening-wrapper with the

Package: squashfs-modules-2.6.24-1-486
Version: 2.6.24+3.3-3
Severity: grave

I have built a sid-based live image using the live-helper package. The
live-helper scripts defaults to creating a squashfs filesystem that somehow can
be synced using aufs. When I test it in qemu (command line qemu -kernel-kqemu
-m 64 -cdrom binary.iso -boot d), I get the following screen output during boot:

Begin: Mounting root filesystem... ...
aufs 20080128
loop: module loaded
squashfs: Unknown symbol sqlzma_init
squashfs: Unknown symbol sqlzma_un
squashfs: Unknown symbol sqlzma_fin
modprobe: FATAL: Error inserting squashfs
(lib/modules/2.6.24-1-486/extra/squashfs/squashfs.ko): Unknown symbol in
module, or unknown parameter (see dmesg)

After that, a busybox shell is started, probably for recovery reasons.

This bug is probably the same as #465183, reported against the squashfs source
package, which - if I understand it right - is not used to produce the binary
squashfs-modules- packages.

Because the bug was found on another (live) system, the system information
below is somewhat obsolete.

Regards,

Mikael Petersson, Falun, Sweden

The lh_build command builds the binary.img image, but it does not boot
properly.
When testing the binary.img it in qemu, here is what I get:

Begin: Mounting root file system... ...
aufs 20071105
loop: module loaded

BusyBox v1.1.3 (Debian 1:1.1.3-5- Built-in shell (ash)
Enter 'help' for a list of built-in commands.

/bin/sh: can't access tty: job control turned off

... oops ?!
... I guess it means the system can't mount its squashfs root filesystem

The lh_build command builds the binary.img image, but it does not boot
properly.
When testing the binary.img it in qemu, here is what I get:

Begin: Mounting root file system... ...
aufs 20071105
loop: module loaded
squashfs: version 3.2-r2 (2007/01/15) Phillip Lougher

BusyBox v1.1.3 (Debian 1:1.1.3-5- Built-in shell (ash)
Enter 'help' for a list of built-in commands.

/bin/sh: can't access tty: job control turned off
(initramfs)

... oops ?!
... I guess it means the system can't mount its squashfs root filesystem

Package: squashfs-modules-2.6.24-1-486
Version: 2.6.24+3.3-3
Severity: grave

I have built a sid-based live image using the live-helper package. The
live-helper scripts defaults to creating a squashfs filesystem that somehow can
be synced using aufs. When I test it in qemu (command line qemu -kernel-kqemu
-m 64 -cdrom binary.iso -boot d), I get the following screen output during boot:

Begin: Mounting root filesystem... ...
aufs 20080128
loop: module loaded
squashfs: Unknown symbol sqlzma_init
squashfs: Unknown symbol sqlzma_un
squashfs: Unknown symbol sqlzma_fin
modprobe: FATAL: Error inserting squashfs
(lib/modules/2.6.24-1-486/extra/squashfs/squashfs.ko): Unknown symbol in
module, or unknown parameter (see dmesg)

After that, a busybox shell is started, probably for recovery reasons.

This bug is probably the same as #465183, reported against the squashfs source
package, which - if I understand it right - is not used to produce the binary
squashfs-modules- packages.

Because the bug was found on another (live) system, the system information
below is somewhat obsolete.

Regards,

Mikael Petersson, Falun, Sweden

Ok, though that doesn't really explain the FTBFS on all the other
arches, does it? Do you have an idea what the cause could be?

Bug#464704: Other similar bugs

2008-03-21 Thread Margarita Manterola
Some other similar bugs:

http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=464320
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=465676

Report this same problem (undefined symbol) for gnome-system-monitor.

This is a problem in libpcrecpp, not in subtitleeditor, but the fix isn't
too evident. Basically, the change done to the abi should be reversed.

This bug should be reassigned to libpcrecpp, but doing so might be
confusing to users, so I suggest leaving it open here until the fix is
there.

Bug#471617: FTBFS in sbuild only

2008-03-21 Thread Piotr Ożarowski
Well, I raised this on #debian-devel again, and since I think
"python2.5 | python (>=2.5)"[1] is just a workaround[2], I was told to
forget about Debian Python policy's spirit ("make your package in a way
that you will not need additional upload [except binNMUs] once new
Python version will be added or removed from supported Python versions
list"[3]), *always* use python2.5 in shebang (at least before python2.5
will be default in Debian) and reassign sbuild's bug to policy (asking
to forbid alternate dependencies there).

Noah, since I don't want your package to suffer from this, please use
python2.5 (only! - without the stuff before the "|") in Build-Depends-Indep
and I will upload it.

[1] please note the order
[2] think what will happen once python2.6 will be default
[3] in this case, we will need additional upload once python2.5 will be
removed from the distribution.

Bug#472074: Should annoyance-filter be dropped?

2008-03-21 Thread Moritz Muehlenhoff
Package: annoyance-filter
Severity: serious

When fixing GCC 4.3 issues I ran into annoyance-filter. I believe
it should rather be dropped from Lenny:

- Last maintainer upload from 2004
- Dead upstream (latest commits three years ago)
- Crashes on some spam messages (#275205)
- Not functional out of the box (#408139)

The popcon score is very low and Debian isn't actually short of
Bayes filters, which work properly.

Cheers,
Moritz

Yes, it's true. The problem is the libpcrecpp0 version. Updating it
subtitleeditor should work again.

I was cooking a new package one week ago. I hope to upload this
weekend. This bug was fixed there. Efectively I put how minimal
version the number 7.6.2 for libpcrecpp0.

Thank you very much.

hehe, Lucas, as I noted on IRC, #403246 severity should be bumped to (at
least) serious if (as you told me) build daemons are using sbuild's
dep. algorithms. azeem told me on #debian-devel (2008-03-09 13:49:49) that
sbuild is not used, though.

PS I know alternate build dependencies are evil, but they *are* useful
sometimes too!

Yes, this appears true (though it is totally unrelated to -z relro) :)

I have uploaded hardening-wrapper 1.6 now, which disables PIE for m68k
and hppa (architectures that don't support it).

Bug#464704: Some things I've found out

2008-03-21 Thread Margarita Manterola
The symbol _ZN7pcrecpp6no_argE is found in the libpcrecpp.so library, that
is provided by libpcrecpp0 package.

The version of subtitleeditor present in sid works correctly with the
libpcrecpp0 package present in sid, but the "undefined symbol" error
happens both with the lenny version and the lenny security version.

With sid's version (7.6-2):

$ objdump -T /usr/lib/libpcrecpp.so.0.0.0 | grep _ZN7pcrecpp6no_argE
8968 gDO .bss   0008  Base_ZN7pcrecpp6no_argE

With lenny's security version (7.4-1+lenny1):

$ objdump -T /usr/lib/libpcrecpp.so.0.0.0 | grep _ZN7pcrecpp6no_argE
88d8 gDO .bss   0008  Base_ZN7pcrecpp6no_argE

With lenny's version (7.4-1):

$ objdump -T /usr/lib/libpcrecpp.so.0.0.0 | grep _ZN7pcrecpp6no_argE
88d8 gDO .bss   0008  Base_ZN7pcrecpp6no_argE

I'm not sure if the variation in the location of the symbol makes any
difference, but the symbol is definitely there.

I don't know too much about this, but I suspect that dependency information
provided by libpcrecpp should indicate 7.6 instead of what gets stored in the
Depends line of subtitleeditor:

Depends: (...), libpcre3 (>= 7.4), libpcrecpp0, (...)

Bug#472051: hippo-canvas: ftbfs with python-central 0.6

2008-03-21 Thread Matthias Klose
Package: hippo-canvas
Version: 0.2.23-2
Severity: serious
Usertags: ftbfs-new-pycentral

python-central 0.6 uses now a package and tool independent directory
to store the architecture independent files. Files which were located
in /usr/share/pycentral/site-packages/ are now located in
/usr/share/pyshared. Your package apparently hardcodes the former
location in some places. Please fix the packaging to work with the new
file locations.

Please ask for help by email or irc, or state if NMUs are welcome to
fix this report.
