Bug#476075: reopen as wishlist bugs with things needed to be done.
reopen 476075 clone 476075 -1 severity 476075 wishlist retitle 476075 Simulated message should simulate user prompt. (-s) retitle -1 Rationale for each package removed needs to be accessible thanks Hi, Now that I tested "sudo apt-get -s remove '^ope*'" and , "sudo apt-get remove '^ope*'" I have clearer idea what made the original bug reporter confused. There are essentially 2 resolvable wishlist bugs: 1. Simulated message should simulate user prompt. (-s) (wishlist) 2. Rationale for each package removed needs to be accessible. (wishlist) With following description, I hope this bug report is useful to the maintainer. === General === I know problem starts that the output message is long. This is clearly a part of the reason people get upset about apt-get. Long list of packages before "Use 'apt-get autoremove' to remove them." are one good example which confuses people. But these packages are not removed unless user execute 'apt-get autoremove' by themselves. But let's not worry about this since these is no simple fix to it. === The 1st issue === The simulated removal happens without displaying normal output of: Do you want to continue [Y/n]? y I guess this is because it internally use APT::Get::Assume-Yes=true despite user setting. What should happen is: * If it really "APT::Get::Assume-Yes" is set to true, current simulated output is fine. (No prompt.) * If it is temporary set "APT::Get::Assume-Yes" is set to true for simulated output, it should display as:. Do you want to continue [Y/n]? y (simulated) This way, user knows they have chance to stop command in normal mode. === The 2nd issue === Even though I checked long list of output, I only see asell removed in REMOVED list. All the long message have no reference to it. Thus I do not have easy way to identify why particular package is removed under apt-get, I do not have good assessment of situation. So this is another wishlist. "Please provide method to identify why one program is removed for remove operation." === Extra Notes == Since I can not identify why aspell was chosen by casual inspection. This is not good enough information for maintainer to look for bug. I think we should treat this dependency resolving as not a bug until we clearly find problem. I am not even sure aptitude autoinstall status is synched with general apt. Some clean documentation will be nice. === My check on dependency === ope* matched openoffice.org-thesaurus-en-us and others. dictionaries-common was installed by those matched but now they are all removed. === Test result without -s === [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ sudo apt-get remove '^ope*' Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... This package has been identified as a package which build-depends on gcj or java-gcj-compat-dev and builds at least one architecture dependent package, and is unbuildable in unstable. All gcj related build dependencies have to restricted to these architectures on which a java or java compatible development kit / compiler is available, i.e. java-gcj-compat [!alpha !arm !hppa !hurd-i386] As a second step please consider changing the java-gcj-compat-dev b-d to default-jdk-builddep, making the package independent of a specific implementation and depend on the jdk, which is most suitable for this architecture. default-jdk-builddep will depend in addition on java-gcj-compat-dev, even if the default jdk is another one (to allow to compile byte-code to native code using dh_nativejava). A package build-depending on default-jdk-builddep should use as JAVA_HOME /usr/lib/jvm/default-java, or as path for the tools /usr/lib/jvm/default-java/bin. If the package builds just architecture dependent binaries which contain only byte-code compiled to native code (packages which often end with "-gcj"), then the architecture restrictions on the build dependency may not be needed (however the package cannot be built anymore on those archs). Hi Adam, My preference would be to fix the bug, of course! But with the bug being 180 days old now, it might be time to look at a workaround like this. Do you know, does Azureus work with any other versions of GIJ? I know that it works with Sun's VM. The problem is that it comes so close to working with gij-4.3 that it's hard to notice that anything is actually wrong. How about putting a temporary hack in the /usr/bin/azureus script to check if /usr/bin/java is gij-4.3 and popup an xmessage saying something like " You are running azureus with gij-4.3. There are known problems with this combination. See http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=475669 for details. If your torrents fail to download, please consider selecting a different java interpreter using the update-alternatives program. " ? I guess that would add a dependency on the xll-utils package, which is not so nice. But printing a message to the console is not much use for people who start azureus from iceweasel like I usually do. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Bug#476075: closed by Osamu Aoki <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> (apt-get removes as instructed. Not a bug)
Hi, Thanks for your answer. Osamu Aoki wrote: Hi, I do not see the need for your suggestion. I think you problem are * POSIX regular expression need to be studied. * you are complainig auto remove. Finally, in fact, I do not understand the algorithm. For ex., when I execute apt-get -s remove ^openof.*, why aspell is removed, but ttf-opensymbol not? I have both on my system. ^ means "string start with" thus ttf-opensymbol is not met. * means 0 or more repeat So you are essentially matching name starting with "opn" aspell must have been installed by dependency. If you ignore warning, that is your fault. What does it mean "identical to install except that packages are removed"? I know that installing means "install them and all their currently uninstalled dependencies, recursively". Does remove means "remove them and all its dependencies, and recursively all the dependencies of dependencies"? I think I understand: remove removes all the packages X matching pattern and all the packages installed on that system DURING THE INSTALLATION of X because X depended on them, is this right? This means that apt-get install memorises each time what packages are installed by dependency for what package, is this right? Where in the man page is this explained? When ever you issue command from root with regrex or glob, you must be very careful. Matching 3 letters to do remove is bad move. Do you think that showing the packages to be removed and adding a confirmation before remove is a good idea? Bug#476075: closed by Osamu Aoki <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> (apt-get removes as instructed. Not a bug)
Hi, I do not see the need for your suggestion. I think you problem are * POSIX regular expression need to be studied. * you are complainig auto remove. > Finally, in fact, I do not understand the algorithm. For ex., when I > execute apt-get -s remove ^openof.*, why aspell is removed, but > ttf-opensymbol not? I have both on my system. ^ means "string start with" thus ttf-opensymbol is not met. * means 0 or more repeat So you are essentially matching name starting with "opn" aspell must have been installed by dependency. If you ignore warning, that is your fault. > What does it mean "identical to install except that packages are > removed"? I know that installing means "install them and all their > currently uninstalled dependencies, recursively". Does remove means > "remove them and all its dependencies, and recursively all the > dependencies of dependencies"? When ever you issue command from root with regrex or glob, you must be very careful. Matching 3 letters to do remove is bad move. >> http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=476075 PS: autoremove was popular demand. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". With the "nvidia" driver, wine starts properly, but some other programms, espacially scanning emails inside of kmail with clamav, does not work. What do you expect me to do here? Clearly your libGL.so.1 is broken, that's not a Wine bug. Probably your nvidia installer overwrote libGL.so.1 so it's no longer usable with nv. Hence, reinstall the appropriate libGL.so.1 to get it working. Or use the one in libgl1-mesa-swx11 if you're desperate... Also, you're using a package from a stable Debian release; packages in stable Debian releases don't get updated unless there's a security issue. Go to www.backports.org for newer packages, Wine has been fairly immune to broken libGL.so.1s since 0.9.57. --- End Message ---

Bug#477860: marked as done (eclipse-cdt: adjust build-dependency (gcj not built on alpha, arm, hppa and hurd-i386))
Your message dated Thu, 01 May 2008 14:47:04 + with message-id <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> and subject line Bug#477860: fixed in eclipse-cdt 3.1.2-2 has caused the Debian Bug report #477860, regarding eclipse-cdt: adjust build-dependency (gcj not built on alpha, arm, hppa and hurd-i386) to be marked as done. This means that you claim that the problem has been dealt with. If this is not the case it is now your responsibility to reopen the Bug report if necessary, and/or fix the problem forthwith. (NB: If you are a system administrator and have no idea what this message is talking about, this may indicate a serious mail system misconfiguration somewhere. Please contact [EMAIL PROTECTED] immediately.) -- 477860: http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=477860 Debian Bug Tracking System Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED] with problems --- Begin Message --- Package: eclipse-cdt Version: 3.1.2-1 Severity: serious User: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Usertags: gcj-bd gij/gcj and java-gcj-compat are not available (anymore) on the following architectures: alpha, arm, hppa and hurd-i386. This package has been identified as a package which build-depends on gcj or java-gcj-compat-dev and builds at least one architecture dependent package, and is unbuildable in unstable. If this report is a false positive, please close it. In this case make sure that the binary packages get removed on these architectures. Please check the influence of a package upload on ongoing transitions before an upload. --- End Message --- --- Begin Message --- Source: eclipse-cdt Source-Version: 3.1.2-2 We believe that the bug you reported is fixed in the latest version of eclipse-cdt, which is due to be installed in the Debian FTP archive: eclipse-cdt_3.1.2-2.diff.gz to pool/main/e/eclipse-cdt/eclipse-cdt_3.1.2-2.diff.gz eclipse-cdt_3.1.2-2.dsc to pool/main/e/eclipse-cdt/eclipse-cdt_3.1.2-2.dsc eclipse-cdt_3.1.2-2_amd64.deb to pool/main/e/eclipse-cdt/eclipse-cdt_3.1.2-2_amd64.deb A summary of the changes between this version and the previous one is attached. Bug#478836: whole memory occupied if screensaver interaggreagate is started within compiz
Package: compiz Version: 0.6.3~git20080115.0ea58487-1 Severity: critical Justification: breaks the whole system Hello, when /usr/lib/xscreensaver/interaggregate was started, the local console with gnome session became unusable. >From a remote ssh session I saw, that all memory (1 GB RAM + 1.4 GB swap) were occupied. Also all of the CPU time were in use (mostly by xorg and compiz.real). So the computer was very busy with swapping and therefore it was difficult and timeconsuming to kill the interaggregate process. On the first view I thought that this is a problem of interaggregate, and reported it as bug #478813. But then I have started interaggreagate to reproduce the problem again. It seems to me that it is related to compiz: If compiz doesn't run, everything is fine. But with compiz there are also other screensavers which cause the problem, e.g. whirlwindwarp. Next point: It doesn't seem to help always to kill the screensaver process, but killing compiz.real leads to a usable system again. Your message dated Thu, 01 May 2008 10:47:08 + with message-id <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> and subject line Bug#477875: fixed in libjmathtex-java 0.7~pre-4 has caused the Debian Bug report #477875, regarding libjmathtex-java: adjust build-dependency (gcj not built on alpha, arm, hppa and hurd-i386) to be marked as done. This package has been identified as a package which build-depends on gcj or java-gcj-compat-dev and builds at least one architecture dependent package, and is unbuildable in unstable. If this report is a false positive, please close it. Bug#478820: wine does not crashes with segmentation fault while libGL.so.1 present
Package: wine Version: 0.9.25-2.1 Severity: grave Justification: renders package unusable While /usr/lib/libGL.so.1 ist present on the system, wine and winecfg crash immediately with a segmentation fault. /usr/lib/libGL.so.1 is in the packet libgl1-mesa-glx and many other packages depend on it. Bug#478821: non-idempotent code in postinst
Package: postgrey Version: 1.27-4 Severity: serious The following bit is not idempotent: |if [ ! -e "$DBDIR" ]; then |mkdir -p "$DBDIR" |dpkg-statoverride --update --add \ |postgrey postgrey 0700 "$DBDIR" |fi This will not do the right thing if for any reason dpkg-statoverride fails to run on the first try. It also happens to make it hard to have $DBDIR bind-mounted from somewhere else. Bug#478662: dhcp3: Missing slapd dependency in init.d LSB header
So, Petter, you're supposing that the ldap server and the dhcpd server are in the same machine. But that does not need to be the case so, what will happen after adding slapd to the "Should-Start" section, if slapd is not installed in the same machine? Regards. Sorry to say so, but to me it seems this bug is still around. - At least I have this problem while updating to Ubuntu 8.04 LTS (and even before the upgrade).
