Bug#484570: [Secure-testing-team] Bug#484570: [motion] motion.conf world readable and thus writable through web interface by default
Hi Nico, On Thursday 5 June 2008 01:41, Nico Golde wrote: That basically makes the control_authentication which is used for http authentication useless as an attacker can read login credentials and then change the configuration to whatever he likes via the web interface of motion (for example switching off motion detection). As I understand it this is a fully optional feature not enabled by default. When such issues are reported to the stable security team we usually consider them to be a non-issue following this reasoning: when an administrator explicitly edits a config file to add credentials to it, that administrator should be considered capable enough to check whether the file is secured. Many applications allow for optional secrets to be added, e.g. my Postfix main.cf has a SASL username password, but we don't require the Postfix' main.cf to be 0600 in a default installation. Normally we respond with this reasoning and advise the maintainer to add a comment right above the setting to remind the administrator of the file's permissions. Bug#484609: pptp-linux: Disconnects immediately after connection
Hi Really good to know. I think I will revert to the old version until this issue has been solved. Unless you have a direct suggestion for solution. I can not see the reason with the below logs. The warning below seems to be quite usual and in normal cases they are seen and it works. But if you can locate the problem I'm very interested in knowing! Bug#484609: pptp-linux: Disconnects immediately after connection
Hi James I have recently upgraded the Debian package to 1.7.2. However one user got this problem. This means that I likely will downgrade the version, unless you can help me with the solution for this problem. I already contacted the upstream author 6 days ago and didn't get an answer yet so I am publishing this now. From core/common/http.cpp: 105 void HTTP::getAuthUserPass(char *user, char *pass) 106 { 107 if (arg) 108 { 109 char *s = stristr(arg,Basic); 110 if (s) 111 { 112 while (*s) 113 if (*s++ == ' ') 114 break; 115 String str; 116 str.set(s,String::T_BASE64); 117 str.convertTo(String::T_ASCII); 118 s = strstr(str.cstr(),:); 119 if (s) 120 { 121 *s = 0; 122 if (user) 123 strcpy(user,str.cstr()); 124 if (pass) 125 strcpy(pass,s+1); This function is used if authentication to the peercast server is done by basic http auth rather than by a cookie. In line 116 the base64 encoded string is copied into str. Note the set method is peercasts own implementation of set since it reimplements the String class. set looks like this: From core/common/sys.h: 38 MAX_LEN = 256 ... 62 void set(const char *p, TYPE t=T_ASCII) 63 { 64 strncpy(data,p,MAX_LEN-1); 65 data[MAX_LEN-1] = 0; 66 type = t; 67 } In line 117 the string gets decoded and in line 118 and following the part before ':' in the decoded string gets copied into user and the part after it into pass. From core/common/servhs.cpp: 558 bool Servent::handshakeAuth(HTTP http, const char *args, bool local) 559 { 560 char user[64],pass[64]; 561 user[0] = pass[0] = 0; ... 580 while (http.nextHeader()) 581 { 582 char *arg = http.getArgStr(); 583 if (!arg) 584 continue; 585 586 switch (servMgr-authType) 587 { 588 case ServMgr::AUTH_HTTPBASIC: 589 if (http.isHeader(Authorization)) 590 http.getAuthUserPass(user, pass); 591 break; user and pass are only declared to have 64 bytes (line 558) while the buffer used for copy can store up to MAX_LEN (256) bytes (ok minus the : here). Servent::handshakeAuth calls then the getAuthUserPass function triggering a buffer overflow. It's thus possible to crash the server and execute arbitrary code if the server allows http-basic authentication. I already requested a CVE id for this. An example configuration and PoC is attached. It was setup to work under SSL all the time, with an SVN backend and using HTTP AUTH for logins. I made custom templates for it, that were also working fine. It has been used both by offline users working through SVN-commits, and by online users working through ikiwiki.cgi withouth problems. After updating to 1.33.5 following DSA-1553 the Edit page functionality has stopped working. I can get into the Edit Page page, make changes and Preview the page as many times as I want, but as soon as a Save is attempted, I get the Your session has expired page and no changes are saved. I changed editpage.tmpl and added the additional form field as suggested by the ikiwiki WiKi, namely tmpl_var field-sid. After that I checked the Edit page and the field is included in the appropiate FORM block and has a value resembling a session id; it did not work anyway. I changed /usr/share/perl5/IkiWiki/CGI.pm, line 615, so that the error message reported the values for $sid and $session-id and fount out they were DIFFERENT. They were DIFFERENT no matter what testing scenario I tried: different browsers, after clearing cookies, after clearing cached data, with or without a proxy, with or without SSL and with different users. -- System Information: Debian Release: 4.0 APT prefers stable APT policy: (500, 'stable') Architecture: i386 (i686) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Kernel: Linux 2.6.18-m-bs Locale: LANG=en_US.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=en_US.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Versions of packages ikiwiki depends on: ii gcc [c-compiler] 4:4.1.1-15The GNU C compiler ii gcc-4.1 [c-compiler] 4.1.1-21 The GNU C compiler ii libc6-dev [libc-dev] 2.3.6.ds1-13etch5 GNU C Library: Development Librari ii libcgi-formbuilder-per 3.03.01-1 Easily generate and process statef ii libcgi-session-perl4.14-1Persistent session data in CGI app ii libhtml-parser-perl3.55-1A collection of modules that parse ii libhtml-scrubber-perl 0.08-3Perl extension for scrubbing/sanit ii libhtml-template-perl 2.8-1 HTML::Template : A module for usin ii libmail-sendmail-perl 0.79-4Send email from a perl script ii libtime-duration-perl 1.02-1Time::Duration -- rounded or exact ii libtimedate-perl 1.1600-5 Time and date functions for Perl ii liburi-perl1.35-2Manipulates and accesses URI strin ii libxml-simple-perl 2.14-5Perl module for reading and writin ii markdown 1.0.1-3 Text-to-HTML conversion tool ii perl 5.8.8-7etch3 Larry Wall's Practical Extraction Versions of packages ikiwiki recommends: ii hyperestraier 1.4.9-1.1a full-text search system for comm ii subversion 1.4.2dfsg1-2 Advanced version control system -- no debconf information ---End Message--- ---BeginMessage--- Source: ikiwiki Source-Version: 1.33.6 We believe that the bug you reported is fixed in the latest version of ikiwiki, which is due to be installed in the Debian FTP archive: ikiwiki_1.33.6.dsc to pool/main/i/ikiwiki/ikiwiki_1.33.6.dsc ikiwiki_1.33.6.tar.gz to pool/main/i/ikiwiki/ikiwiki_1.33.6.tar.gz ikiwiki_1.33.6_all.deb to pool/main/i/ikiwiki/ikiwiki_1.33.6_all.deb A summary of the changes between this version and the previous one is attached. Hi Thijs, * Thijs Kinkhorst [EMAIL PROTECTED] [2008-06-05 08:56]: Hi Nico, On Thursday 5 June 2008 01:41, Nico Golde wrote: That basically makes the control_authentication which is used for http authentication useless as an attacker can read login credentials and then change the configuration to whatever he likes via the web interface of motion (for example switching off motion detection). As I understand it this is a fully optional feature not enabled by default. Yes. I have some problems to follow that because I fail to see why a normal user should be able to read that file even if no credentials are included. I'm not sure if assuming an admin is capable of noticing 644 rights and changing it to appropriate value is a good idea. I for myself would not expect this in /etc (I may be not a good admin :). This is also problematic as motion can log to different databases including the credentials for this as well in that file. However adding a note to the configuration file sounds like a good idea but the solution could be a lot simpler by changing the permissions. Bug#484639: Two buffer overflows in evolution
Package: evolution Version: 2.22.2-1 Severity: grave Tags: security, patch Justification: user security hole Hi The following CVEs[0][1] have been issued against evolution. CVE-2008-1108: The vulnerability is caused due to a boundary error when parsing timezone strings contained within iCalendar attachments. This can be exploited to overflow a static buffer via an overly long timezone string. Successful exploitation allows execution of arbitrary code, but requires that the ITip Formatter plugin is disabled. CVE-2008-2119: The vulnerability is caused due to a boundary error when replying to an iCalendar request while in calendar view. This can be exploited to cause a heap-based buffer overflow via an overly long DESCRIPTION property included in an iCalendar attachment. Successful exploitation allows execution of arbitrary code, but requires that the user accepts the iCalendar request and replies to it from the Calendars window. The gentoo bugreport can be found here[2] together with patches[3][4]. Please mention the CVE ids in your changelog, when you fix the issues. Cheers Steffen [0]: http://nvd.nist.gov/nvd.cfm?cvename=CVE-2008-1108 [1]: http://nvd.nist.gov/nvd.cfm?cvename=CVE-2008-1109 [2]: http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=223963 [3]: http://bugs.gentoo.org/attachment.cgi?id=154593 [4]: http://bugs.gentoo.org/attachment.cgi?id=154595 -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#484570: [Secure-testing-team] Bug#484570: [motion] motion.conf world readable and thus writable through web interface by default
Hi Thijs, * Thijs Kinkhorst [EMAIL PROTECTED] [2008-06-05 10:44]: On Thu, June 5, 2008 10:25, Nico Golde wrote: I have some problems to follow that because I fail to see why a normal user should be able to read that file even if no credentials are included. Wouldn't that advocate to make nearly every file under /etc mode 0600, since there's just a minority of those that need to be read by users? Everything from inetd, apache, postfix, network/interfaces, ... What is your argument against that? I think yes, for those who can include passwords this should be the case for the simple reason that this is the simplest solution for the problem. I see absolutely no argument in not doing this and forcing admins to check file permissions by themselves. To come back to your sasl example I also think the situation is slightly different. Getting your sasl credentials you can send mails through your smtp gateway, getting the motion credentials enables you to completely change the complete configuration through the web interface. Bug#451459: update-manager RC bug: removing obsolete files: easy fix?
Hi, It looks like this bug is the only reason why update-notifier and update-manager got removed from testing: http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=451459 The fix looks so obvious to me that I'm wondering whether I missed something. It looks like an old version of update-manager, which never made it into a stable release, has left .pyc files behind. The fix seems to be to remove them in postinst. It looks like we should simply remove completely these two directories: /usr/lib/python2.4/site-packages/SoftwareProperties/ /usr/lib/python2.4/site-packages/UpdateManager/ I have checked that those files belong to update-manager (but at another location, now), but I didn't find a way to make sure no other package writes in the same directories. Do you see any catch? Perhaps safer to remove each individual file as listed in the bugreport, and then the directories if they get emptied? Bug#484670: clamav: clamscan fails to detect malware when using external archivers due to the filetype detection code
Subject: clamav: clamscan fails to detect malware when using external archivers due to the filetype detection code Package: clamav Version: 0.93~dfsg-volatile1 Severity: grave Justification: renders package unusable When using external archivers to process files, clamscan fails to detect malware in many cases. This is due to the fact that the filetype detection code (clamscan/manager.c lines 708 ff.) matches the filename against a hardcoded list of extensions (e.g. .zip, .rar, .arj etc.). The external archiver is only called if the filename matches the extension. This obviously breaks the detection in cases where the filename doesn't contain the required extension. Most cases of self-extracting archives use .exe as a extension and thus aren't recognized at all. This creates a huge gap (wide open barndoor would be the precise term, I think), as very many cases of Windows malware come in the form of self-extracting archives. Also, this breaks in cases where suspicious files are scanned in a quarantine, using the MD5 sum as a filename. Libclamav already contains code to recognize the file format independently of a filetype extension (libclamav/scanners.c, lines 1554 ff., function cli_scanraw). This could/should be used to detect the filetype when deciding whether to call an external archiver to process a file. This bug has also been opened in the upstream bugzilla (https://wwws.clamav.net/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=1051). However, Debian is affected more than other distributions due to the fact that clamscan on Debian relies on an external unrar in order to scan RAR archives (because of the licensing issues). This bug means that self-extracting RAR archives ARE NOT SCANNED correctly on Debian systems. Many forms of (especially Windows) malware spread as self-extracting RAR archives and ARE NOT DETECTED by Debian clamav installations. As a result of that wishlist item, mime-support started registering /usr/bin/see as an alternative for /usr/bin/view. The /usr/bin/view alternative exists for vi implementations, such as vim, to provide the traditional name view for invoking a read-only vi on a file. /usr/bin/see clearly does not provide the same functionality, so registering this alternative violates Policy 10.1: Two different packages must not install programs with different functionality but with the same filenames. (The case of two programs having the same functionality but different implementations is handled via alternatives or the Conflicts mechanism. See Maintainer Scripts, Section 3.9 and Conflicting binary packages - Conflicts, Section 7.3 respectively.) If this case happens, one of the programs must be renamed. The maintainers should report this to the debian-devel mailing list and try to find a consensus about which program will have to be renamed. If a consensus cannot be reached, both programs must be renamed. Worse yet, mime-support registers /usr/bin/see with a higher priority than existing contenders for the /usr/bin/view alternative, so installing mime-support will now immediately break the expected functionality of view. Please have mime-support stop registering /usr/bin/see as an alternative for /usr/bin/view, and have it unregister the alternative when upgrading from versions of mime-support which registered the alternative. - Josh Triplett -- System Information: Debian Release: lenny/sid APT prefers unstable APT policy: (500, 'unstable'), (1, 'experimental') Architecture: i386 (i686) Kernel: Linux 2.6.23-1-686 (SMP w/1 CPU core) Locale: LANG=en_US.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=en_US.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash mime-support depends on no packages. severity 484670 normal thanks This one time, at band camp, Torsten Jerzembeck said: Severity: grave Justification: renders package unusable Really, calm down. If clamscan doesn't use an external unpacker, it falls back to the internal one, which is by and large good enough (for everything but rar, as you note). THERE IS NO NEED TO SHOUT. The issue about rar files is true. Whether it's a bug in the package or not is debatable, as it's certainly done on purpose by me with every upload, and not some accident or bad code path. I'll see if upstream is interested in calling their native filetype routines and add that to the list for choosing an external unpacker. -- - | ,''`.Stephen Gran | | : :' :[EMAIL PROTECTED] | | `. `'Debian user, admin, and developer | |`- http://www.debian.org | - signature.asc Description: Digital signature

Then I chose to administrate the machine myself and upgraded to sid (BTW I'm the only one in that case, so that no-one can have the same problem as me here). So, I'm setting the severity to normal. I think that when upgrading, openssh-server should detect unknown keys, and for the first time an unknown key was detected, explain the problem to the user and ask him if he wants to regenerate the key. -- Vincent Lefèvre [EMAIL PROTECTED] - Web: http://www.vinc17.org/ 100% accessible validated (X)HTML - Blog: http://www.vinc17.org/blog/ Work: CR INRIA - computer arithmetic / Arenaire project (LIP, ENS-Lyon) -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#484609: pptp-linux: Disconnects immediately after connection
Hi I actually found that the problem was caused by faulty scripts from my ISP which stopped working with the new version of pptp-linux. As soon as I adjusted the configuration as it's suggested here: http://pptpclient.sourceforge.net/howto-debian.phtml#configure_by_hand everything restarted working. But these scrips still work fine with the older versions of pptp. If you want to, I could send them to you for investigation. So there is no need to downgrade the package and I think the bug can be closed. I should have investigated the problem deeply before filling the bugreport. Sorry for that. Best regards Andrej Ola Lundqvist wrote: Hi Really good to know. I think I will revert to the old version until this issue has been solved. Unless you have a direct suggestion for solution. I can not see the reason with the below logs. The warning below seems to be quite usual and in normal cases they are seen and it works. But if you can locate the problem I'm very interested in knowing! Please send me the configuration you use and if possible more extensive logging. Unfortunately, the setup.py script roughly processes mapserver mapscriptvars and due to the -shared flag use leaves out the external symbols of the two AGG libs used, because it supposes they are available as shlib. I'll add a tiny patch to link in the two .a libraries by manipulating the mapscriptvars, but a different strategy should be provided at upstream level to manage this case. Of course with the old 2.4 (which had shlibs available) that was not an issue. Cheers and thanks. -- Francesco P. Bug#483819:
The problem here is that conflicting versions of packages are currently installable in testing. This has been fixed in unstable, but shouldn't packages be pointing to the right versions so that this can't happen? libdecoration should be at the same version as the compizconfig packages same version as the compiz packages. What we're seeing is API incompatibilities. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Bug#484721: No longer ships (and installs) /usr/share/intltool/*-update.in
Package: intltool Version: 0.40.0-1 Severity: serious Justification: should not enter testing in this state Hi, almost any GNOME app out there has the following snippet in it's Makefile.am: EXTRA_DIST = \ intltool-extract.in \ intltool-merge.in \ intltool-update.in The expectation is, that intltoolize copies these files (or symlinks them) and they are included in the tarball. With the latest upgrade, this not only breaks VCS checkouts, which now have dangling symlinks, it also makes the upgrade path unnecessary painful, as the Makefile.am can not be changed withouth bumping the intltool requirement to 0.40.0, which means everyone has to upgrade at once (a lot of current distributions don't ship intltool 0.40.0). My recommendation would be, to put the /usr/share/intltool/*-update.in files back into intltool. If the requested intltool version (e.g. via IT_PROG_INTLTOOL) is 0.40, intltool should behave backwards compatible and copy/symlink the intltool-*.in files as before. This allows all distros out there to smoothly upgrade to intltool = 0.40 and then upstream can safely bump the intltool requirement to = 0.40. In this mode, intltool would not copy the *.in files anymore and the EXTRA_DIST bits would have to be removed from the Makefile.amS.
