Hello Heimdal-Bugs,

The check for version symbols in configure seems to be broken. Initially
I got:

configure:12363: checking for ld --version-script
configure:12384: /bin/sh libtool --tag=CC --mode=compile cc -c -g -O2
-g -Wall -O2 conftest.c

/bin/sh: libtool: No such file or directory
configure:12387: $? = 127
configure:12401: result: no

So I tried adding the path in the configure script, but it still doesn't
work:

configure:12363: checking for ld --version-script
configure:12384: /bin/sh ./libtool --tag=CC --mode=compile cc -c -g -O2
-g -Wall -O2 conftest.c

/bin/sh: libtool: No such file or directory
configure:12387: $? = 127
configure:12401: result: no

Hmmm. Come to think of it, using libtool here might have been a bad
idea. I have a suspicion the libtool script isn't created until after
configure finishes :-(.

Yes, that looks like the case. Chances are it worked when tested before
because libtool already existed from a previous run.

For the record the previous bug report on this is available here:

You can set it in /etc/iceweasel/iceweaselrc or ~/.mozilla/firefox/rc

Package: python-dns
Version: 2.3.0-5.1
Severity: grave
Tags: security
Justification: user security hole

CVE-2008-1447, which deals with DNS reply poisoning that
is possible due to DNS clients sending DNS requests on
predictable UDP source ports, is a security issue that
also applies to python-dns, as it does not implement the
recommended UDP port randomization... example:

Note lack of port randomization in code:
def sendUDPRequest(self, server):
"refactor me"
self.response=None
self.socketInit(socket.AF_INET, socket.SOCK_DGRAM)
for self.ns in server:
try:
# TODO. Handle timeouts &c correctly (RFC)
#self.s.connect((self.ns, self.port))
self.conn()
self.time_start=time.time()
if not self.async:
self.s.send(self.request)
self.response=self.processUDPReply()
#except socket.error:
except None:
continue
break
if not self.response:
if not self.async:
raise DNSError,'no working nameservers found'

In [25]: import DNS
In [26]: d=DNS.DnsRequest(name='www.google.com', server='208.80.142.5',
port=53)
In [27]: r=d.req()
In [28]: r=d.req()

In [29]: r=d.req()

In [30]: r=d.req()
(etc)

Yields, with "tcpdump udp port 53":

before the last line should make this package build succesfully

cp /usr/share/misc/config.sub work.tmp
cp /usr/share/misc/config.guess work.tmp

Unfortunately since I have been unable to reproduce the problem (it
seems to be specific to 64 bit mips and qemu-system-mips64 seems very
slow and crash prone) I cannot confirm if this fix works or not.

Bug#492434: pidgin: Connects to Jabber server with bad SSL certificates without warning

2008-07-25 Thread Josh Triplett
Package: pidgin
Version: 2.4.3-1
Severity: grave

Justification: user security hole

I recently set up a Jabber server. I used the default snakeoil
certificate. When I configured Pidgin to connect to my new server,
using SSL, it connected without any complaint whatsoever.

Hi,

while it is admirable to provide detailed information about copyright
holders and licensing, it makes not updating debian/copyright almost
always a bad idea when adding source code (admittedly, this seems hard
as long as KDE4 stays as much of a moving target as it seems to be at
the moment).
It seems that (at least) the version of kdebase-runtime currently in
experimental needs some attention.
Keep up the good work!

Kind regards

Might not completely agree with the severity, as it is not completely
broken, but I'm leaving it (a fixed version is ready).

Workaround: let it show that message, then open gmail in konqueror
(don't need to type your login details, it will be already logged in),
and ta-da: kcheckgmail works.

Bug#492427: heimdal: Library symbol version information is missing again

2008-07-25 Thread Richard A Nelson
Package: heimdal
Version: 1.2.dfsg.1-1
Severity: critical
Justification: breaks unrelated software

After Heimdal 1.1 went in, and libpam-heimdal was compiled against it -
I lost ssh access to local and remote machines due to sshd segfaulting.

The problem was traced down and the culprit was missing library version
symbols on libkrb5.so - because openssh is linked against MIT, and when
pam calls libpam-heimdal, which uses Heimdal libs... bad stuff happens :(

Heimdal was rebuilt to have the symbol versions:
$ readelf -s /usr/lib/libkrb5.so.24 | grep HEIMD | head -n 3
6: 97 FUNCGLOBAL DEFAULT UND [EMAIL PROTECTED] (5)
11: 19 FUNCGLOBAL DEFAULT UND [EMAIL PROTECTED] (5)
18: 220 FUNCGLOBAL DEFAULT UND [EMAIL PROTECTED] (5)

Unfortunately, libpam-heimdal was never rebuilt - so I did my own
packages to allow remote access again.

Then comes Heimdal 1.2, and a re-build of rdeps was schedule to help
clean things up for the freeze... I installed the new libpam-heimdal
and am once again screwed.

Can we get
* the library version symbols re-instated
* rdeps rebuilt
* impliment some checking for this in the package build scripts

Thanks,

Ah. Yes I suppose that's true, and it gives me a thought -- I suspect it
may be due to the Linux kernel being built on the PC architecture. I *think*
all of the Apple boxes that run a PC architecture use EFI and the GPT
partition scheme rather than the Apple one -- so it might be possible to
simply not include Apple detection based on a decision at compile time. And
that's likely to be much easier to code.

> Maybe we just need to give preference to MSDOS partitions.

Hmm. If we do that, will that avoid the problem if the hybrid disk is in
an Apple? [I haven't tested it.]

Reproduced here.

Any patch against bindings documentation is very welcome, it's quite
scarce, and upstream knows that.

Those files are (were?) automatically generated, maybe one went missing?

I'll keep you posted (eventually through a close message to this bug), I
plan to upload the latest upstream bugfix release today if possible, and
this bug is the primary target of this upload.

It can't be so complicated; your layout is properly detected on Linux, isn't
it?

Maybe we just need to give preference to MSDOS partitions.

Btw, adding grub-devel to CC. Let's try to have discussions in upstream list..

Package: iceweasel
Severity: grave

In a fresh Lenny installation, I am unable to start iceweasel because
the click through license dialog box do not respond on the [OK] button
when I choose 'I accept the term of the License Agreement'. This make
iceweasel completely unusable. I suspect this only affect new users.
Because of this, I set the severity to grave.

Our automated buildd log filter[1] detected a problem that is likely to
cause your package to segfault on architectures where the size of a
pointer is greater than the size of an integer, such as ia64 and amd64.

Function `arch_interpret_delta_path' implicitly converted to pointer at
/build/buildd/tla-1.3.5+dfsg/src/tla/libarch/cmd-apply-delta.c:304
Function `arch_find_or_make_tmp_local_copy' implicitly converted to pointer

Function `tmp_dir' implicitly converted to pointer at
/build/buildd/tla-1.3.5+dfsg/src/tla/libfsutils/tmp-files.c:84

This is often due to a missing function prototype definition.
For more information, see [2].

Though it is guaranteed that this codepath will cause a segfault on certain
architectures, it is not guaranteed that this codepath would ever be executed
(e.g., if the returned pointer is never dereferenced). However, this bug
does prevent the ia64 buildd from successfully building this package, resulting
in a practical FTBFS issue and warranting the serious severity.

I've trouble parsing what you wrote.

Based on information provided at the DNS summit, I do think we should
harden the glibc stub resolver.

Comments/Problems:

Thanks for adding the firmware support! I finally got around to
testing it out w/ one of the dailies & thought I'd write up the issues
I ran into in case any of them aren't yet known.

Unable to mount usb stick
-
I created a usb stick w/ the firmware debs in the firmware.tar.gz. In
my case it was a virtual usb device, emulated by the HP iLO 2. I
created the backend file by mkdosfs'ing an empty 8MB file, loopback
mounting it, and unpacking the firmware deb tarball in the root.

The installer correctly discovered that I might need firmware for my
bnx2 controller, and it asked me if it should look for it on some
attached media. I selected yes, and it went away for a bit while it
searched devices, but then eventually returned w/ the same
prompt. Dropping to a shell, I saw the following messages in dmesg:

[ 24.285589] FAT: utf8 is not a recommended IO charset for FAT
filesystems, filesystem will be case sensitive!
[ 24.299221] Unable to load NLS charset utf8
[ 24.299224] FAT: IO charset utf8 not found

I am also unable to mount the usb stick from the shell using the
same arguments mountmedia uses:
 # mount /dev/sda /media -tauto

The problem appears to be that the Debian kernel is configured to use
the utf8 iocodepage by default (see #483781), but the installer does
not include the nls_utf8 module. If I override this default by passing
the mount option 'iocodepage=iso8559-1', the mount succeeds. If I copy
over and load the nls_utf8 module the mount succeeds w/o the
iocodepage option. And if I use an ext2 stick and load the ext2 module
early on, this entire step succeeds w/o further intervention.

fw file dups on error
-
minor - but each time I returned to the "should i look for firmware"
screen, the displayed list would include more copies of the same
filenames. To illustrate, see the following screen shots:
 http://free.linux.hp.com/~dannf/d-i-20080723/missing-fw-1.png
 http://free.linux.hp.com/~dannf/d-i-20080723/missing-fw-2.png
 http://free.linux.hp.com/~dannf/d-i-20080723/missing-fw-3.png

fails to install fw debs into target

I lazily dumped all of the fw debs from the firmware.tar.gz onto my
stick instead of just the one I needed (bnx2). This caused problems
during the base install:
 http://free.linux.hp.com/~dannf/d-i-20080723/busybox-error.png

Looking at syslog, it appears that the problem is unmet dependencies
for some of the firmware debs:

  base-installer: info: Available initramfs generator(s): 'initramfs-tools'

  Building dependency tree...

You might want to run `apt-get -f install' to correct these:

Good, then I might try some workaround against the regex matcher. Can a

for testing and NOT uploading to someone, once I hacked that potential
workaround?

Bug#492298: kpowersave: Suspend function broken

2008-07-25 Thread Michael Biebl

Terry Bullett wrote:

Package: kpowersave
Version: 0.7.3-2
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

On/Aoout 19Jul08, kpowersave applet changed and no longer returns my
Thinkpad T61 from suspend mode.

Something also causes my entire machine to lock up every half hour or
so.

kpowersave is only a frontend, to call the suspend method. It doesn't do
the actual suspend, so I doubt it's a bug in kpowersave. Besides, it
hasn't been updated for quite some time.

Could you please provide more details:
- Which software packages were updated when suspend/resume started to fail?
- What graphics card do you use, which kernel version?
- What does "lshal | grep quirk" say?
- Please attache the fail /var/log/pm-suspend.log after a failed
suspend/resume.

Cheers,
Michael

Bug#492377: mksh: strcasestr implicitly converted to pointer

2008-07-25 Thread dann frazier
reassign 492377 mksh
thanks

The seriousness of this bug is actually caused by the fact that we
will be unable to do ia64 updates of mksh because the ia64 buildd will
reject them. This doesn't mean it needs to be fixed in mksh of course,
but mksh cannot release until it is fixed somehow, so the bug should
remain here.

I don't have any good solutions in mind, and I also don't like the
idea of you having to change somethinto workaround this filter. Maybe
the buildd maintainer (CC'd) could install a whitelist file or
something?

First of all, the bug you describe doesn't break anything. It just
halts the boot process. Second, you shouldn't have uswsusp or pm-utils
for that matter on a server, that's desktop software.

Third, this shouldn't happen if you didn't suspend before the
powerfailure. What message did you got? Without that information this
report is not at all usefull.

This is an important security bug that needs fixing so I'm made it RC

Please could you try the attached patch?

If it works (i.e. discards the apple partmap), I would also need a positive
result (test on a pure apple layout).

If it doesn't work, please provide a dump of the first 2 sectors of your disk

I don't understand this - I use Debian (my /etc/debian_version says
lenny/sid) and the patch which makes jpilot load the plugins with
RTLD_GLOBAL appeared to work.

Ok, new patch attached for your consideration that dlopen()'s the
right shared python library - but note we still must use RTLD_GLOBAL
to have success... otherwise python modules that jppy uses don't have
the libpython symbols:

Bug#492402: tla: implicit pointer conversions

2008-07-25 Thread dann frazier
Package: tla
Version: 1.3.5+dfsg-10
Severity: serious
Tags: patch
Usertags: implicit-pointer-conversion

Our automated buildd log filter[1] detected a problem that is likely to
cause your package to segfault on architectures where the size of a
pointer is greater than the size of an integer, such as ia64 and amd64.

Function `arch_interpret_delta_path' implicitly converted to pointer at
/build/buildd/tla-1.3.5+dfsg/src/tla/libarch/cmd-apply-delta.c:304
Function `arch_find_or_make_tmp_local_copy' implicitly converted to pointer

Function `tmp_dir' implicitly converted to pointer at
/build/buildd/tla-1.3.5+dfsg/src/tla/libfsutils/tmp-files.c:84

This is often due to a missing function prototype definition.
For more information, see [2].

Though it is guaranteed that this codepath will cause a segfault on certain
architectures, it is not guaranteed that this codepath would ever be executed
(e.g., if the returned pointer is never dereferenced). However, this bug
does prevent the ia64 buildd from successfully building this package, resulting
in a practical FTBFS issue and warranting the serious severity.

My summary:

We found savedefault feature to be buggy and dangerous. Because of this it
is disabled now in update-grub. This problem is most likely just a result
  of kdm enabling it.

Since this chunk of code is basicaly unmaintained upstream, I don't expect
that it will be fixed in the Legacy version of GRUB (specially, not in
  time for lenny).

We intend to re-enable this functionality in GRUB 2 shortly. In the meantime
I recommend that you avoid using it in GRUB Legacy. For kdm, it'd probably
be a good idea to disable this feature for now.

Sorry for not replying first, but I'd like to take as many days as
possible, to see what's going on, and I can confirm that with this
option, iceweasel doesn't freeze: how can I let it be always set,
without opening a terminal and launch that command?

I saw your email to #d-release, so maybe that will be the default
behavior in a future version.

Thanks a lot for your huge support,
Sandro

Yep. :)

It's because dh_install simply copies the files and dh_movefiles, well,
moves them. Thanks for reporting this; a fix is in my git repo and is now
pending upload, hopefully with a fix for arm and armel.

Bug#492377: mksh: strcasestr implicitly converted to pointer

2008-07-25 Thread Thorsten Glaser
tags 492377 + help
reassign 492377 qa.debian.org
thanks

dann frazier dixit:

> Function `strcasestr' implicitly converted to pointer at ] scn.c:4

I suggest you read your eMail INBOX, as I already wrote to you in
Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
that this is a FALSE POSITIVE and that I request help for how to
deal with this bug in your automated checker.

Excerpt from that eMail, for the archives:

│
│The mksh build process involves a configuration and a build step, similar
│to what GNU autoconf does. (In fact, it does this twice, once for the
│normal glibc binary, once for a small dietlibc binary.) However, in con-
│trast to GNU autoconf, the configuration step is verbose.
│
│The autoconf check for strcasestr() is expected to return no with dietlibc,
│because the function is not defined. Since it is not declared in any sy-
│stem header file (of dietlibc), we have no prototype, so the compile test
│also triggers a false positive on the warning:

│Diagnostic output from the autoconf checks is prepended by “] ” (and always
│occurs on the file scn.c, akin to conftest.c in GNU autoconf).
│
│What do you suggest to remove this false positive while keeping the confi-
│guration process as warning-free as possible?

As for a possible solution, I don’t think that adding an exemption of
mksh to the checker is worth the effort, but I can’t think of a modifi-
cation to the test that would NOT trigger the warning while staying
warning-free in all other cases (as the test is EXPECTED to fail on
Debian with Fefe’s dietlibc). Maybe I could play some sed magic to
fool the regex your scanner uses, so that it doesn’t recognise warnings
emitted during the configuration process? This would then be a Debian-
specific kludge and NOT go in upstream. If you have any BETTER solutions,
please let me know.

bye,
//mirabilos

Package: grub
Version: 0.97-27
Severity: critical
Justification: breaks the whole system

When I do "update-grub", it fails.

For example, in the past, I had this:

title Debian GNU/Linux, kernel 2.6.18-6-686
root(hd0,0)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.18-6-686 root=/dev/sda1 ro quiet
initrd /boot/initrd.img-2.6.18-6-686

And If I do "update-grub" :

title Debian GNU/Linux, kernel 2.6.18-6-686
root(hd1,0)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.18-6-686 root=/dev/sda1 ro quiet
initrd /boot/initrd.img-2.6.18-6-686

So, "root (hd0,0)" is replaced by "root (hd1,0)". To fix the problem, I have
to, manually, replace "(hd1,0)" by "(hd0,0)".

This problem happens on some machines that run debian etch and debian lenny/sid.

device.map is used to map system devices to GRUB devices. Simply edit that
file as:

(hd0) /dev/sda
(hd1) /dev/hda

to archieve the desired effect. Or otherwise upgrade to grub2 which uses UUIDs
and doesn't have this problem.

thing unusable.

As you can see, it's been reported to upstream and it's being worked on.

The installer couldn't mount its own partition - it seem that mount/the kernel
now by default tries to use iocharset=utf8 by default, but this charset isn't
available in the installer.
By changing iso-scan postinst to pass -o iocharset=iso8859-1 to the mount

I guess it is related to the kernel changes recently described on devel:

Bug#492378: RoM: keep out of testing for now.

2008-07-25 Thread Bernd Zeimetz
Package: wmi
Version: 1:0.1.13-1
Severity: serious

Upstream moved back to 0.1.12 for now. They want to check again if
they're not linking gpl V3 code at some place. So let's keep it out of
testing to make sure we don't release code with copyright issues -
0.1.12 works well (except for Vista, but who uses that)

Bug#492377: mksh: strcasestr implicitly converted to pointer

2008-07-25 Thread dann frazier
Package: mksh
Version: 35.2-1
Severity: serious
Usertags: implicit-pointer-conversion

Our automated buildd log filter[1] detected a problem that is likely to
cause your package to segfault on architectures where the size of a
pointer is greater than the size of an integer, such as ia64 and amd64.

Function `strcasestr' implicitly converted to pointer at ] scn.c:4

This is often due to a missing function prototype definition.
For more information, see [2].

Though it is guaranteed that this codepath will cause a segfault on certain
architectures, it is not guaranteed that this codepath would ever be executed
(e.g., if the returned pointer is never dereferenced). However, this bug
does prevent the ia64 buildd from successfully building this package, resulting
in a practical FTBFS issue and warranting the serious severity.

/boot/grub/device.map :

Now we know why grub thinks hd1 is your /

try grub-install with --recheck if that creates device.map right
else you have to change device.map manually and then update-grub works right.
device.map is only created if it either doestn't exist or if you run grub-install with --recheck

I'm not sure what kdm is doing, as I have not taken a look at the source code.
However, I see the following in /var/log/kdm.log

GNU GRUB version 0.97 (640K lower / 3072K upper memory)

[ Minimal BASH-like line editing is supported. For
the first word, TAB lists possible command
completions. Anywhere else TAB lists the possible
 completions of a device/filename. ]
grub> savedefault --default=5 --once
grub>

so I see that kdm seems to run grub, and not edit menu.lst or some other hack.

> Let's reassign this bug; later it can be moved back to GRUB if necessary.

The grub and kdm maintainers are much more competent than I. However, I can
investigate more if no-one else is aware of the problem or cannot reproduce.
It's a bit time-consuming, so for the moment I am simply avoiding using this
feature - I'll stick to rebooting into linux :)

Bug#474909: potential NMU of maxima using sbcl

2008-07-25 Thread David Bremner

Hi Camm;

I prepared an NMU for maxima using sbcl as a lisp.

http://mentors.debian.net/debian/pool/main/m/maxima

the main disadvantage seems to be a versioned dependency on sbcl.

Would this be OK for you?

If you have no more time for maxima packaging, I could adopt it. I
don't claim to understand everything in the packaging on a deep level,
but I'm learning.

Hmmm.weird - seems there's s.th. in multipath's sysfs code broken - I'll
check that once I have access to a MP system myself again. What about:

ACTION=="add", SUBSYSTEM=="block", RUN+="/sbin/multipath -v0 %N"

This should hopefully do the trick. As a last resort:

ACTION=="add", SUBSYSTEM=="block", RUN+="/sbin/multipath -v0 /dev/%k"

should work too. Could you try that?

Package: fakechroot

I made a simple fakechroot environment including only busybox and
/bin/rm, using these versions:

[0 [EMAIL PROTECTED] ~]$ dpkg -l busybox coreutils
Desired=Unknown/Install/Remove/Purge/Hold
| Status=Not/Installed/Config-files/Unpacked/Failed-config/Half-installed
|/ Err?=(none)/Hold/Reinst-required/X=both-problems (Status,Err: uppercase=bad)

+++-==-==-
ii busybox1:1.1.3-5 Tiny utilities for small and embedded system
ii coreutils 6.10-3 The GNU core utilities
[0 [EMAIL PROTECTED] ~]$

fakechroot appears to no longer actually trick /bin/rm into operating
within the "chroot", though i recall it doing so successfully back
when i was using coreutils 5.97-5.3 only two weeks ago.

Here's the test setup. I create a mini chroot environment, create a
new file in the "root" directory named "x", and /bin/rm is unable to
unlink it if the path to /x is specified absolutely:

[0 [EMAIL PROTECTED] cdtemp.o27783]$ rm -rf root
[0 [EMAIL PROTECTED] cdtemp.o27783]$ mkdir -p root/{bin,lib}
[0 [EMAIL PROTECTED] cdtemp.o27783]$ cp /lib/lib{{c,m}.so.6,crypt.so.1} root/lib
[0 [EMAIL PROTECTED] cdtemp.o27783]$ cp /bin/{busybox,rm} root/bin/
[0 [EMAIL PROTECTED] cdtemp.o27783]$ cp /lib/ld-linux.so.2 root/lib
[0 [EMAIL PROTECTED] cdtemp.o27783]$ ln root/bin/busybox root/bin/sh
[0 [EMAIL PROTECTED] cdtemp.o27783]$ fakechroot /usr/sbin/chroot root /bin/sh

BusyBox v1.1.3 (Debian 1:1.1.3-5) Built-in shell (ash)
Enter 'help' for a list of built-in commands.

/ $ exit
[0 [EMAIL PROTECTED] cdtemp.o27783]$ ls -l /x
ls: cannot access /x: No such file or directory
[2 [EMAIL PROTECTED] cdtemp.o27783]$

Note that busybox's rm appears to be capable of unlinking the chrooted
/x, but that /bin/rm is not able to do so. Even worse, when /bin/rm
uses the *real* (unchrooted) path to the file, it successfully unlinks
it.

I haven't followed all the changes in the recent versions of
coreutils. Is it possible that there's some new library call that is
being used that fakechroot isn't handling or something?

Thanks for maintaining fakechroot in debian. If i can help debug this
any further, please let me know.

Regards,

OK, then we have to admit defeat :(

Bug#492348: libpam-devperm: Breaks execution of at jobs

2008-07-25 Thread Christoph Pleger
Package: libpam-devperm
Version: 1.5-2
Severity: critical
Justification: breaks unrelated software

Hello,

as you can see in the bug description for Debian Bug #418560, at jobs are
not executed if I include "session required pam_devperm.so" to my
/etc/pam.d/common-session.

I do not know if this is a problem in at or in libpam-devperm.

That's indeed probably the best way to fix it and at the same time gives
th euser a reminder to fix their syslog config, even if they're using
some other syslog daemon.

Ok, don't worry about that. Simply run from your build dir:

  ./grub-probe -t device /
  ./grub-probe -t device /boot

Instead of /dev/dm-X, it should print /dev/md0 or /dev/md2.

I can't tell if this is GRUB's fault or not without an accurate description
of what kdm is doing.

Let's reassign this bug; later it can be moved back to GRUB if necessary.

Bug#473682: Still apparently present in 2.7.1-1

2008-07-25 Thread Piotr Roszatycki
Thank you very much for you report. It is valuable and I already
tracked down the problem.

It seems that fakechroot missing another syscall: fstatat64. It is a
little bit strage, because it works correctly on amd64 architecture
but it fails on i386 only.

I'll try to fix it ASAP.

Bug#311812: postfix: syslog reconnection - solved?

additional syslog.conf-ish config files, not specifying additional log
files. There is also another syslogd that seems to be more common in
the wild.

In any case, I'm thinking I'll solve the issue by asking if the user
wants to chroot postfix, and if so telling him that he needs to deal
with making syslog happier, or (assuming it actually works) bind
mounting /dev/log. If not chrooted, then the issue is non-existent.

Bug#492317: (update breaks grub boot (MBR) "Grub Error 28: Selected item can not fit into memory")

2008-07-25 Thread Alan BRASLAU
Further investigation shows that the error systematically occurs after
selecting a grub boot option from kdm. This, persists even after powering-down
the system before trying to reboot. Thus, kdm (version 4:4.0.98-1) must be
corrupting the grub configuration somehow.

I am filing a kdm bug report upstream. Should the present grub bug report be
closed?

Thank you

Only if rsyslog supports that, too, as it is the new default syslog
daemon. I didn't look into rsyslog due to missing spare time, but
support for such configurations needs to be added if it's not there yet.
