Bug#538868: xserver-xorg-video-radeon: black screen with the driver radeon on a card hd4570

I am trying to use the driver radeon on HD4570, but I have only a black
screen and I can't switch to terminals with ctrl+alt+1. I can't access at all
 to gdm.

I have used the Xorg from unstable, and both kernel 2.6.26 and 2.6.30, But I
 have the same result.
For all my test I have used the same Xorg.conf (except for the line « Driver
fglrx of course). generated by the non-free ATI driver.

With the radeonhd driver, I have this in the Xorg.log:
 (EE) No devices detected.

 Fatal server error:

However, the fglrx driver works well with the kernel 2.6.26.

 – debian testing, with the Xorg from unstable.

I have attached to this mail the 2 Xorg.log obtained with both drivers radeon
and radeonhd, but if you need some other informations, I will be happy to
 provide them.

In order to use the free drivers, you have to make sure

  * The fglrx kernel module isn't loaded
  * The X server doesn't load any components installed by fglrx
(grep fglrx Xorg.0.log.radeon*)

The easiest way to achieve this is probably to remove all fglrx
packages.

Bug#538086: installation-reports: Installation works, but neither is user created nor a root password set

2009-07-28 Thread Otavio Salvador
Hello,

On Wed, Jul 22, 2009 at 8:09 PM, Dinyar Rabadydinyar.rab...@gmail.com wrote:
The first problem I encountered while trying to install a system with an
encrypted LVM was that the USB stick was taken to be /dev/sda while the
harddisk was /dev/sdb. This changed at first boot when the usb stick was
 unplugged.

This first problem could be fixed either by booting into a rescue system
and first changing grub's menu.lst to point to (hd0,0) instead of (hd1,0)
and then unpack the initrd.img file and change /conf/conf.d/cryptroot to
point to /dev/sda instead of /dev/sdb, or alternatively I pulled the USB
stick out right before detecting the harddisk. (priority=medium is helpfull
for timing here.) This seemed to have no negativ effects on the installation.

This is not going to happen in new Debian Installer release for
Squeeze since we're not using UUID to avoid those problems. Would be
nice if you could check a current snapshot if it indeed works for you
and tell us.

The second problem I encountered was that neither my user account was created
during installation nor was the root password set. This left the system fairly
unusable until I used a rescue system to mount my encrypted disk, added a user
to /etc/passwd and /etc/shadow (without a password) and subsequently added
this user to the sudoers group. In this way I could aquire root on my new
 system.

This is confusing; maybe your media was corrupted in some way since I
don't remember of seeing this report and it is used in every
installation. Could you try to reproduce it and report back to us?

Cheers,

Bug#538990: Source package contains non-free IETF RFC/I-D

2009-07-28 Thread Simon Josefsson
Severity: serious
Package: celt
Version: 0.6.1-1
User: debian-rele...@lists.debian.org
Usertags: nonfree-doc rfc

Hi!

This source package contains the following files from the
IETF under non-free license terms:

+ celt-0.6.1.orig/doc/ietf/draft-valin-celt-rtp-profile-01.txt

When looking into this, I noticed XML source was included in the package
so there is potential that the authors are willing to license the work
under a DFSG-free license as well as the IETF license. See the links
below for more information on how to make that happen.

The license on RFC/I-Ds is not DFSG-free, see:
 * http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=199810
 * http://release.debian.org/removing-non-free-documentation
 * http://wiki.debian.org/NonFreeIETFDocuments

The lenny/squeeze release policy says binary and source packages must each be
free:
 * http://release.debian.org/lenny/rc_policy.txt
 * http://release.debian.org/squeeze/rc_policy.txt

The severity is serious, because this violates the Debian policy:
 * http://www.debian.org/doc/debian-policy/ch-archive.html#s-dfsg

There are (at least) three ways to fix this problem. In order of
preference:

1. Ask the author of the RFC to re-license the RFC under a free
license. A template for this e-mail request can be found at
   http://wiki.debian.org/NonFreeIETFDocuments

2. Remove the non-free material from the source, e.g., by re-packaging
the upstream archive and adding 'dfsg' to the Debian package
   version name.

3. Move the package to non-free.

General discussions are kindly requested to take place on debian-legal
or debian-devel in the thread with Subject: Non-free IETF RFC/I-Ds in
source packages.

Thanks,
Simon

Please feel free to close this bug.

 Thanks.

is it fixed in latest 2.6.30-3? 2.6.30.1 had one cifs fix afais:
~/src/stable-queue$ ls releases/2.6.30.1/|grep cifs
cifs-fix-fh_mutex-locking-in-cifs_reopen_file.patch

and 2.6.30.{2,3} none.

2009-07-28 Thread Petter Reinholdtsen
[Alexander Wirt]
What was leading up to this? Why did you try to disable insserv?
 apt-get install file-rc

Right. Good to hear that it is the same problem as the initial
report. May I ask why you are using file-rc? What advantages does it
have over the current sysv-rc script with concurrent booting?

There are other implementations bootmechanisms like file-rc, upstart
and so on. Don't break them!

This problem only affect file-rc. Upstart is using the sysv-rc
scripts to call the init.d scripts, and insserv work fine with it.

I see two good ways to move forward with this. One is to convert
file-rc to use dependency based boot sequencing (for example by
rewriting it and insserv to work well together), or drop file-rc from
Debian.

I would really love to work with the file-rc developers to get it to
order the boot sequence using dependency information.

Happy hacking,

It doesn't use insserv. And it is much simpler to administrate for small
systems like laptops or desktops.

ehm. file-rc uses also the /etc/init.d/ scripts so this answer is not
correct and there are other replacements I didn't mentioned.

God no. Insserv is pure crap. Just fix your package its broken like hell.

Is there any _good_ reason why it has to _depend_ on insserv? (insserv is
fully optional, so there is no need for another essential package).

I would really love to work with the file-rc developers to get it to
order the boot sequence using dependency information.
No, please accept that people don't like this.

What was leading up to this? Why did you try to disable insserv?

It doesn't matter why one would want to disable some package. The
package has to be deinstallable fine, no matter how (semi) essential
those packages are. If the package isn't able to get removed properly
(without jumping though hoops) it's broken, it's as simple as that.

Insserv will become essential together with sysv-rc, and is not
supposed to be simple to remove any more.

Please leave that part to the hooks in the package managers that
already have the hoops of requesting users to do something specific to
get it removed anyway - there is no need to add another layer here.

 So long,
Rhonda

Right. Good to hear that it is the same problem as the initial

have over the current sysv-rc script with concurrent booting?

Speaking for myself why I prefer file-rc: No symlink hell,
copying/distributing just one single file which defines the boot
setup is enough, option to 'grep $service /etc/runlevel.conf', it's
deterministic and just works,...

BTW: How do I know in which order my insserv based system will boot up?

There are other implementations bootmechanisms like file-rc, upstart
and so on. Don't break them!

This problem only affect file-rc. Upstart is using the sysv-rc
scripts to call the init.d scripts, and insserv work fine with it.

Of course upstart isn't affected because it doesn't conflict with
sysv-rc (which introduced the breakage).

Why should it be such a big deal to fix the package so removing it
works again?

I see two good ways to move forward with this. One is to convert
file-rc to use dependency based boot sequencing (for example by
rewriting it and insserv to work well together),

OK - but *please* make dependency based booting an option.

 or drop file-rc from Debian.

Bug#539009: attal-themes-cyberpunk: copyright violations

2009-07-28 Thread Steve Cotton
Package: attal-themes-cyberpunk
Version: 1.0~rc2-1
Severity: serious
Justification: Policy 2.3

Attal is inspired by Heros Of Might and Magic (HOMM), and some of its
graphics are ripped from the original.

themes/cyberpunk/images/units/face_r1u1.png
Compare with http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:CastleTown.jpg

I'm fairly sure that these are from it too:
  images/technics/* (in both theme packs)
  misc/ico* (cyberpunk)
  images/lords/* (cyberpunk)

The other theme, attal-themes-medieval contains a lot more artwork, and for
most of it I've a lot more confidence it, looks like it was generated from
3D models. (Haven't looked in to whether there's source for the models).
Even there, there are a few images that I'm not sure about (most of the
images/artefacts directory).

Steve

Hi,
the following CVE (Common Vulnerabilities Exposures) id was
published for pulseaudio.

CVE-2009-1894[0]:
| Race condition
|
| If the PulseAudio binary is started on Linux systems, it checks if the
| LD_BIND_NOW environment variable is set. If this is not the case, PulseAudio
| will set the variable and it will reload itself. It tries to determine its
path
| name by looking at the /proc/self/exe symbolic link. This symbolic link will
| point to the full path name of the current process.
|
| int main(int argc, char *argv[]) {
| [...]
| #if defined(__linux__) defined(__OPTIMIZE__)
|/*
| Disable lazy relocations to make usage of external libraries
| more deterministic for our RT threads. We abuse __OPTIMIZE__ as
| a check whether we are a debug build or not.
|*/
|
|if (!getenv(LD_BIND_NOW)) {
|   char *rp;
|
| /* We have to execute ourselves, because the libc caches the
| * value of $LD_BIND_NOW on initialization. */
|
|   pa_set_env(LD_BIND_NOW, 1);
|   pa_assert_se(rp = pa_readlink(/proc/self/exe));
|   pa_assert_se(execv(rp, argv) == 0);
|}
| #endif
|
| Normally, /proc/self/exe will point to something like /usr/bin/pulseaudio.
| However by using hard links, it is possible to cause /proc/self/exe to point
to
| a different location.
|
| $ cd /tmp
| $ ls -la /proc/self/exe
| lrwxrwxrwx 1 yorick yorick 0 2009-06-09 16:31 /proc/self/exe - /bin/ls
| $ ln `which ls` ls
| $ ./ls -la /proc/self/exe
| lrwxrwxrwx 1 yorick yorick 0 2009-06-09 16:31 /proc/self/exe - /tmp/ls
|
| In addition, if a hard link is created, the SUID bit is preserved.
|
| $ ln `which pulseaudio` pulseaudio
| $ ls -la pulseaudio
| -rwsr-xr-x 2 root root 71616 2009-04-09 02:12 pulseaudio
|
| A race condition exists in the reload mechanism of PulseAudio. An attacker
| can exploit this issue by creating a hard link pointing to the PulseAudio
| binary. After this it can execute this binary through the hard link. At this
| moment /proc/sef/exe will point to the hard link. Before PulseAudio is
| restarted, the attacker can replace the hard link with a different
(executable)
| file or (symbolic) link. If PulseAudio is restarted, it will use a path name
| that at this moment points to a different file, for example a command shell.
| Root privileges are not dropped when PulseAudio is reloading, thus allowing a
| local attacker to gain root privileges.
|
| Please note, this attack is only possible if the attacker can create hard
| links on the same hard disk partition on which PulseAudio is installed (i.e.
| /usr/bin and /tmp reside on the same partition).

If you fix the vulnerability please also make sure to include the
CVE id in your changelog entry.

Patch available at
http://git.0pointer.de/?p=pulseaudio.git;a=commitdiff_plain;h=84200b423ebfa7e2dad9b1b65f64eac7bf3d2114;hp=ff252cb48d9bd827d262eb2633fecaff47c6fe5c

Bug#539017: sympa: Missing runtime dependency on libdigest-md5-perl

2009-07-28 Thread Tim Retout
Package: sympa
Version: 5.4.7-1
Severity: serious
Justification: Policy 3.5

Version 5.4.7-1 of sympa removed the old libmd5-perl dependency
(although I still see it listed on the package page for some reason),
but did not add a libdigest-md5-perl dependency.

When installing in a clean chroot, that package does not get pulled
in. (I haven't checked for other missing dependencies at this
point...)

No. I've tried 0.73 on a couple of machines with no problems.

What is strange is that evidently from the size of the PDF::API2 does

PDF::API2 depends on libcompress-zlib-perl. What version are you using

Package: hdf4-tools

Justification: Policy 6.6(4)

| Unpacking replacement hdf4-tools ...
| dpkg: error processing /var/cache/apt/archives/hdf4-tools_4.2r4-3_amd64.deb
(--unpack):
| trying to overwrite `/usr/bin/ncgen', which is also in package netcdf-bin
| dpkg-deb: subprocess paste killed by signal (Broken pipe)

A closer look reveals three more conflicts: /usr/bin/ncdump and both
programs' man pages, thereby clashing with all of netcdf-bin's
contents outside /usr/share/doc. Could you please sort this out one
way or another?

Thanks!

It looks like this change against Mapnik trunk solves the issue:

boost::python::converter::registry::insert(extract_context,

Actually, that wouldn't resolve the issue because that would now
silently fail.

Instead, I propose to
if !Pycairo_CAPI

installed?\n),

if Pycairo_CAPI {
  boost::python::converter::registry::insert(...);
  boost::python::converter::registry::insert(...);

and also to add python-cairo to the depends-line of python-mapnik.

This forwarded email from the author confirms the license is
GPL/Artistic:

http://osdir.com/ml/linux.redhat.fedora.maintainers/2006-04/msg00090.html

It looks like the author did manage to hand over maintenance of this
module, so the current maintainers should be prodded to add this
information. But the email might do for Debian for now?

I think this is site's problem, i considered a few packages which

I Cc-ed the mail to debian-devel: may be somebody gives us advice.

Again, as in the case of the broken rott download, the correct
fix is to add support for the media files to game-data-packager

in autoreconf being run on the unpatched code before the patching is done.)

a few years ago rocksndiamonds was removed from debian because media
files isn't free. I haven't seen the other way to download them from
postinst: each of new upstream versions must replace the previous, so
downloading have to be started by upgrade system (postinst)

rocksndiamonds has the dialog screen which asks user if he agrees or
not to download. If he agrees, downloading can finish with failcode

Bug#515348: Depends on GTK2

2009-07-28 Thread Barry deFreese

Hi,

Upstream has finally release 1.10 which builds with GTK2. I've create a
new package with the new upstream along with some other fixes. Though
there is still an issue with the man pages being in section 1.

people.d.o seems to be down so I posted the .dsc here, I hope you can
get to it.

Bug#539063: babel: sidl_rmi_ObjectDoesNotExistException__create implicitly converted to pointer

2009-07-28 Thread dann frazier
Package: babel
Version: 1.4.0.dfsg-2
Severity: serious
Tags: patch
Usertags: implicit-pointer-conversion

Our automated buildd log filter[1] detected a problem that is likely to
cause your package to segfault on architectures where the size of a
pointer is greater than the size of an integer, such as ia64 and amd64.

  Function `sidl_rmi_ObjectDoesNotExistException__create' implicitly converted
to pointer at sidlx_common.c:260

This is often due to a missing function prototype definition.
For more information, see [2].

Though it is guaranteed that this codepath will cause a segfault on certain
architectures, it is not guaranteed that this codepath would ever be executed
(e.g., if the returned pointer is never dereferenced). However, this bug
does prevent the ia64 buildd from successfully building this package, resulting
in a practical FTBFS issue and warranting the serious severity.

I see... The method QBanking::print() used to be just an override function for
another print method, and now that that other method is gone we have a
recursion...

I will fix that myself.

(Also, when I built it with DEB_BUILD_OPTIONS=parallel=3, the build process
went ahead and ran autoreconf even though the patch had failed. That to
me indicates that there's a missing dependency somewhere which could result
in autoreconf being run on the unpatched code before the patching is done.)

The problem is likely that the patching has been wrongly removed: the
build target still depend on patch while there shouldn't be any patch
rule in there... I'll look at it.

Bug#538975: Quick fix with iptables

2009-07-28 Thread Michael Holzt
As a hint for other sysadmins:

For the time until a fixed debian package is available, this iptables rule
should filter all dnsupdate packets, thus mitigating the attack:

| iptables -A INPUT -p udp --dport 53 -j DROP -m u32 --u32 '30270xF=5'

Works for me, but no guaranty. I have added a second rule which logs
said dnsupdate packets and i already got several such packets from the
outside world, so the exploit is clearly in active use and the least you
can do is to try the iptables rule.

Regards
Michael

Hi,

During a rebuild of all packages in sid, your package failed to build on

About the archive rebuild: The rebuild was done on about 50 AMD64 nodes
of the Grid'5000 platform, using a clean chroot. Internet was not

Bug#527840: Needs to be actively maintained or removed

2009-07-28 Thread Ryo Furue
Hi Moritz,

Thanks for the suggestion.

| (*)I log in to my workstation at my workplace from home
| and invoke xpdf: For example,
|
|home$ ssh -X work.example.com
|. . . log in to work . . .
|work$ xpdf mydoc.pdf
|work$
|
| okular and acroread are so slow that it's utterly
| impossible to use remotely.
| (I've never used evince or epdfview.)
|
| Try epdfview, then.

Did. Unfortunately, it was too slow to use remotely.
When the top 2/3 of a page was displayed, for example,
I hit the space bar to see the bottom 1/3 of the page.
It took 5-10 seconds before the rendering was complete.
In the same environment, xpdf takes less than a second.

Evince was as slow as epdfview.

epdfview is an excellent viewer if used
on a local machine.

| xpdf is a dead end.
|
I'm sorry to hear that. (No, it's not possible
for me to take care of the package, unfortunately.)

Regards,
Ryo

That's Moritz's observation/opinion rather than Xpdf's author's.
It's certainly a long time between releases though.
