This left the system fairly unusable until I used a rescue system to mount my encrypted disk, added a user to /etc/passwd and /etc/shadow (without a password) and subsequently added this user to the sudoers group. In this way I could aquire root on my new system. This is confusing; maybe your media was corrupted in some way since I don't remember of seeing this report and it is used in every installation. Please leave that part to the hooks in the package managers that already have the hoops of requesting users to do something specific to get it removed anyway - there is no need to add another layer here. Bug#538975: Quick fix with iptables
As a hint for other sysadmins: For the time until a fixed debian package is available, this iptables rule should filter all dnsupdate packets, thus mitigating the attack: | iptables -A INPUT -p udp --dport 53 -j DROP -m u32 --u32 '30270xF=5' Works for me, but no guaranty. I have added a second rule which logs said dnsupdate packets and i already got several such packets from the outside world, so the exploit is clearly in active use and the least you can do is to try the iptables rule.
