Hi

no, unstable is fine. But it seems to me this was a very rare CPU bug
on my machine (apache webserver, medium load), as i couldn't make ssh
backups (corrputed mac on input)

i tracked this down to a faulty cpu after changing _every_ other
replaceable port in my machine.

You don't add quilt to build-depends.
I made a patch to revise to be able to build.
Would you apply it?

Bug#549275: udev: no longer creates /dev/disk/by-id/md-uuid-* symlinks, breaking boot!

2009-10-01 Thread Daniel Pittman
Package: udev
Version: 146-3
Severity: critical

G'day.

I recently upgraded to the latest udev, help up by the fact that I use
MD software RAID and needed to wait for the mdadm package to catch up.

On reboot my system broke: it could no longer locate the root device.

Having checked by poking around in the initramfs environment this is
because of this change (as far as I can tell):

udev (146-2) experimental; urgency=medium
[...]
  * Copy in the initramfs only the rules files which are needed to mount
the root.

Unfortunately, the rules that create the symlinks from
/dev/disk/by-id/md-uuid-* to the /dev/md* devices were *not* considered
necessary for mounting the root.

On the other hand, they *were* necessary in my boot stack, which is:

md RAID10 => dm_crpyt => lvm => root

Specifically, I used the 'by-id' name for the MD device in
/etc/crypttab, which was no longer created, so the second stage failed.

I appreciate the desire to boot faster, but it is a very, very
significant change to stop creating those device names in the initramfs
since it can break, and make *very* difficult to recover, a previously
working system that used them.

I can supply whatever extra detail is required; I have verified that,
indeed, it is specifically that only the ATA devices, and none of the
soft "logical" devices, that get by-id links in the initramfs already.

Regards,
Daniel

That's not how the bts works. Bugs are closed when a fixed version
enters the archive, not when the binaries for your distribution appear
on your mirror. In any case, 2:1.6.4-2 is now available for amd64.

Cheers,

Taking a closer look at the bug report 548716 from Pancho Horrillo shows
that he has an amd64 box, so this bug should not be closed until 1.6.4-2
is available for that architecture.

Sorry for raising this question, but I thought the patched package was
built automatically by the buildds. Is this a manual thing? Then I
really apologize. I just tried to point out that the problems were not
only affecting i386 users. This was also reflected by some of the many
bug reports. However, since the bug was solved for i386 (and s390)
users it will be removed. The problem still remains for other architectures.
Is there no way to tell for which architectures the bugs are reported to.
I did not find any bug report tags or pseudoheaders for this! I beg to
continue to use Debian unstable, you are doing a very good job!

Package: goobox
Version: 2.0.0-7
Severity: grave

I get the following symptoms: The Goobox window shows the message "Invalid
device", and the following warning is printed:
  ** (goobox:1802): WARNING **: Can't read /proc/scsi/sg/device_strs

It seems Goobox assumes my CD drive is a SCSI drive because of it's
device name /dev/sr0. (It's a plain laptop ATA drive.) Next it goes
looking for that /proc file, and then it gives up when it discovers that
file doesn't exist.

This might be caused by a recent-ish kernel change, I'm pretty sure my
cd was /dev/hda when I installed this system.

I just deleted all the code that looks at the device name, and Goobox
works again for me. Patch attached. I think this won't do much damage
for people who actually have SCSI drives, goobox just won't be able to
retrieve the drive's model name anymore. It will break the "copy cd"
feature on kernel 2.4.

(BTW, the code looks for some file in /proc/ide to get the model name of
ATA device, but that's another directory I don't have here. Another
kernel change?)

Can you provide the output from 'ls /etc/rcS.d/ /etc/rc6.d/'?

This sound a bit like the problem reported in #543375. Could it be
the same problem? Do you use the default Debian kernel, or a
home-made one?

Happy hacking,

Bug#549259: upgrade-reports: boot after recent upgrade fails - initrd created without raid support

2009-10-01 Thread phil
Package: upgrade-reports
Severity: critical
Justification: breaks the whole system

After upgrading, the initrd created does not contain necessary raid
support to boot. I was able to boot into single user mode using the
previous (.bak) initrd image.

I was able to compare the file list between the two initrd images and
found that md and several other raid related utilities, etc are no
longer in the initrd image following the upgrade.

As a secondary issue, apt now indicates hundreds of packages are no
longer needed and can be removed with autoremove (also a bad thing).

Unfortunately, the older initrd does not contain fully compatible
support for the upgraded system and the system fails to fully boot
to the gdm login screen with the backup initrd image. Instead, the
system immeadiately hard resets.

Package: grub-pc
Version: 1.97~beta2-2
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

Updating to grub-pc from grub-legacy creates a script in
/etc/grub.d/20-memtest+ but unfortunately the entry fails to
boot memtest+ after the upgrade. Specifically, this won't work:

 menuentry "Memory test (memtest86+)" {
 linux $MEMTESTPATH
 }

But this does:

 menuentry "Memory test (memtest86+)" {
 linux16 $MEMTESTPATH
 }

I was finally able to find the answer here (thank you Felix):
   http://osdir.com/ml/grub-devel-gnu/2009-08/msg00101.html

Also note that other recommendations, such as the one listed
here, did NOT work (using 'netbsd' in place of 'linux16'):
   http://en.gentoo-wiki.com/wiki/Grub2#Booting_Memtest86.2B

It would also really be helpful if the documentation for grub-pc
contained a working example for memtest+ in examples/grub.cfg as it
would at least give a hint as to how to go about modifying the
/etc/grub.d/20-memtest+ script by hand after the upgrade; because
without doing that /boot/grub/grub.cfg is overwritten when
update-grub or update-grub2 are run.

Similarly the Grub2 wiki at http://grub.enbug.org/ doesn't list
anything about booting memtest+ either. :-/

Package: grub-pc
Version: 1.97~beta3-1
Severity: normal

The autogenerated memtest86+ entry in grub.cfg does not boot. Pressing e in
Grub and changing "linux" to "linux16" (as suggested by Grub at boot time)
allows memtest to start.

After upgrading GRUB 2 memtest86+ cannot be launched
anymore. GRUB says that the linux16 command should be used
to boot into memtest86+ instead of the linux command.

I've attached a patch against debian/grub that fixes this
and also fixes bug #522345.

Cheers,
Avi.

The planet feed aggregator attempts to remove malicious content from

this input:

At least Opera will execute this code.

The package in Lenny is vulnerable and should require a
security update. Fixed packages are available from:

I can't reproduce this at all in an etch system, having set up a locale
matching yours. Can you reproduce this every time?

Could you please run:

  cd /usr/share/man/es
  zcat /usr/share/man/es/man1/man.1.gz > $HOME/zman123456
  zsoelim $HOME/zman123456

... and see if that crashes in the same kind of way, with signal 11?

Yes, it does (now that I see the output, I realize that may be you want
to know I access the shell via ssh):

This is a serious bug as it makes installation fail. Possible
solutions are to have the two packages conflict, to rename the common
file in one of the two packages, or to remove the file from one
package and have this package depend on the other package. File
diversions or a Replace relation are another possibility.

Here is a list of files that are known to be shared by both packages
(according to the Contents file for sid/amd64, which may be
slightly out of sync):

  usr/share/man/man1/aexver.1.gz

This bug is assigned to both packages. If you, the maintainers of
the two packages in question, have agreed on which of the packages will
resolve the problem please reassign the bug to that package.

These messages point towards
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=548343 ("applications
utilizing gvfs crashing on 'save' attempts"). Can you reproduce the
segfaults after logging out of your X session and logging back in again?

Package: plasma-widget-networkmanagement
Version: 0.1~svn1013816-1
Severity: serious

Since I have updated the nm plasmoid (not sure it is the last update that
caused the problem), it is completely broken:
- displays an icon looking like a cellular phone (but a zoomed low-res B&W
icon)
- no network-managing functionnality when clicking on it

What happenned ?

networkmanagement widget has been almost completely reimplemented and it is
not yet ready for use (according to upstream). So in the meantime, plasma-
widget-networkmanager package basically is a dummy package pulling in network-
manager-kde (tray icon), which is somewhat usable. So use it. I'm closing the
bug since there is no bug, just not-implemented-yet situation perfectly
appropriate for experimental.

This is most likely a lack of /proc. Some ld.so features require
/proc/self/exe.

$ readelf -d /usr/bin/java  | grep ORIGIN
 0x000f (RPATH) Library rpath:
[$ORIGIN/../lib/amd64/jli:$ORIGIN/../jre/lib/amd64/jli]
 0x6ffb (FLAGS_1)Flags: ORIGIN

AFAIK, a mounted /proc is close to mandatory these days. The error
message could be nicer, but this is a libc bug.

Dear maintainer,
in the former NMU I've unfortunately forgot to include one of the
dependency descending from python-gnome2-desktop, which is now subsumed
by a different package (python-nautilusburn). To fix the mistake, I've
just performed another NMU which simply adds the missing dependency.

For your convenience, I attach to this message a comprehensive NMU diff
from the latest non-NMU-ed version.

I'm very sorry for this noise.
Cheers.

something else? did somebody change dpkg's defaults? beyond me. :(

I can't reproduce this at all in an etch system, having set up a locale
matching yours. Can you reproduce this every time?

Could you please run:

  cd /usr/share/man/es
  zcat /usr/share/man/es/man1/man.1.gz > $HOME/zman123456
  zsoelim $HOME/zman123456

... and see if that crashes in the same kind of way, with signal 11? If
it does, could you then install the strace and valgrind package and run:

  cd /usr/share/man/es
  zcat /usr/share/man/es/man1/man.1.gz > $HOME/zman123456
  strace -f -s 1024 zsoelim $HOME/zman123456
  valgrind zsoelim $HOME/zman123456

... and send me the full output of all of that.

I'm willing to spend some time debugging this, but you're running
oldstable rather than the current stable and I've made eight upstream
releases since then fixing really quite a large number of bugs, so I'm
not going to keep this as a release-critical bug forever; I'm leaving it
that way for now on the off-chance that this bug is still present
somehow.

Thanks,

Hi,

currently, this package has a dependency on python-gnome2-extras.
However, it does not seem to use any of the modules in it.

The dependency should probably be dropped.

Cheers,

Hi,

serpentine currently depends on python-gnome2-desktop. However, this
binary package will disappear, so that we can cope with the large
upcoming changes in the list of supported modules upstream.

Instead of depending on it, you need to make serpentine depend only
on the packages corresponding to the modules it is actually using.
The output of a script looking at these dependencies was put on this
page:

http://wiki.debian.org/GnomePythonSplitting

These dependencies may not be entirely accurate, but they should be a
good starting point.

Thanks,

Package: perl
Version: 5.10.1-4
Severity: serious

As revealed by the piuparts test at

 http://piuparts.debian.org/sid/fail/libperl5.10_5.10.1-4.log

DynaLoader from perl-base no longer works without perl installed:

 Can't locate Config_heavy.pl in @INC (@INC contains: /etc/perl
/usr/local/lib/perl/5.10.1 /usr/local/share/perl/5.10.1 /usr/lib/perl5

/usr/local/lib/site_perl .) at /usr/lib/perl/5.10/Config.pm line 69.

This was caused by upstream change

http://perl5.git.perl.org/perl.git/commit/9e6e929b49155a4e040be3c98aa578e5de1ec66d

which makes $dl_dlext and $dl_so get expanded at runtime rather than buildtime.
These need Config_heavy.pl which is in the perl package.

The relevant discussion starts at

 http://www.nntp.perl.org/group/perl.perl5.porters/2007/12/msg131528.html

Quoting Jan Dubious there:

> However, I think that interpolating $dl_dlext and $dl_so at buildtime
> was a mistake; we should have retained the module variables and
> interpolated them at runtime.

I'll hardcode the values for now as a quick fix, but I don't think this
deviation from upstream is a good thing in the long run. Brendan,
can you recall any specific reason (other than 'not needed') why
Config_heavy.pl is not in perl-base?

Hi

udev FTBFS on mips as these build daemons don't have an existing $HOME, so one
cannot create a subdirectory in them.

It would be good to not fail the build when this is the case.

Cheers

But we got no assurance that Decklan (the maintaner) will have spare
time soon to package this new upstream version.

mpd on armel is blocking the faad2/libass/... transition that's why
getting mpd ro build is important

Bug#527982: dart-server: contains non-free material

2009-10-01 Thread Thorvald Natvig

I've been looking into this bug as part of my NM process.

As far as I can see, this package is abandoned upstream. Their webpage
has a binary-only download link, and refers you to a non-existing SVN
repository for the source. The wiki for the project refers to Dart2,
which is a complete rewrite. I'm not sure if this package is Dart2 or
Dart 1.
On the mailing list for dart, the last few messages are from Jun 2008,
recommending people to switch to CDash. CDash is alive and well, and a
ITP (#536477) was filed this summer.

I was unable to get the current package to produce any testresults, and
as the .jar files are used in the processing of results, it's hard to
verify that a fix (if implemented) would work. Note that it's actually
the client and not the server that uses the jar files, so the files
probably should have been in dart-client instead.

Not sure if it's worth it. We will release MPD 0.15.4 on the upcoming
weekend, which includes the revert commit.

can upload the package if another patch is proposed.

Subject: [PATCH] Make DynaLoader work without Config_heavy.pl again. (Closes: #549170)

Expand a few Config variables at build time to accommodate the
Debian perl-base <> perl split: dl_dlext and dl_dlso come from
Config_heavy.pl which isn't in perl-base.

Do you have a dual monitor setup?

Can you run the following Python code and show the output?

from gtk import gdk
display=gdk.display_get_default()
n=display.get_n_screens()
print n
for i in range(n):
screen=display.get_screen(i)
print screen.get_width(), screen.get_height()

supervise stores its run-state information in
/etc/service/${service}/supervise and
/etc/service/${service}/log/supervise. According to the FHS, this
information should go into /var, e.g. in /var/lib/supervise/${service}.

Hi, the supervise program stores the run-state information whereever you
tell it to store it. If you create a directory /etc/service/foo, and
run 'supervise /etc/service/foo', it'll create
/etc/service/foo/supervise/, true. If you create /var/cache/foo, and a
symlink /etc/service/foo -> /var/cache/foo, and run 'supervise
/etc/service/foo', it'll create /var/cache/foo/supervise/. If you
create /etc/sv/foo, a symlink /etc/sv/foo/supervise ->
/var/lib/supervise/foo, and a symlink /etc/service/foo -> /etc/sv/foo,
and run supervise, it'll use /var/lib/supervise/foo.

To ease the setup of services with service directories in /etc/sv/
that'll be linked into /etc/service/, there's the update-service(8)
program that takes care of that. All Debian packages I know that setup
daemontools managed services use the update-service(8) program.

Regards, Gerrit.

I searched the WWW a little.

My problem seems not to be related to [1], because this value `monitor`
is set to `0` in my case in every appearance under /apps/panel/*.
