Bug#550457: Remote denial of service via pathological performance of regular expressions

2009-10-10 Thread Chris Lamb
Package: python-django
Version: 1.0.2-1+lenny1
Severity: serious
Tags: security

Django's forms library included field types which perform
regular-expression based validation of email addresses and URLs. Certain
addresses/URLs could trigger a pathological performance case in this
regular expression, resulting in the server process/thread becoming
unresponsive, and consuming excessive CPU over an extended period of time.
If deliberately triggered, this could result in an effective
 denial-of-service attack.
[..]
This issue was disclosed publicly by a third party on a high-traffic
mailing list, and attempts have been made to exploit it against live Django
 installations.

   http://www.djangoproject.com/weblog/2009/oct/09/security/

Does not affect unstable (once 1.1.1-1 lands).

Thanks for the report. That solution is not good though, we don't want to use
 a
code copy. I'll look at this issue, perhaps we just need a new gnome-main-menu
 (to get a new libslab).

Actually the libslab packages provided by gnome-main-menu were just a code copy
too, and libslab is an independent library. I may workaround this if #550461
takes too long.

Package: gramps
Version: 3.1.2-1
Severity: important
Usertags: gnome-python

Hi,

gramps currently depends on python-gnome2-desktop. However, this
binary package will disappear, so that we can cope with the large
upcoming changes in the list of supported modules upstream.

Instead of depending on it, you need to make gramps depend only on
the packages corresponding to the modules it is actually using. The
output of a script looking at these dependencies was put on this
page:

http://wiki.debian.org/GnomePythonSplitting

These dependencies may not be entirely accurate, but they should be a
good starting point.

Thanks,

Bug#550477: grub-pc: after update-from-grub-legacy the system stopped booting

2009-10-10 Thread wzabo...@elektron.elka.pw.edu.pl
Package: grub-pc
Version: 1.97~beta3-1
Justification: renders package unusable
Severity: grave

*** Please type your report below this line ***
After I've issued the command upgrade-from-grub-legacy, the system stopped
booting, when I press enter or select any line in the menu (if I let the
system
boot automatically after timeout - everything works...).
If I press enter, or move the highlighted line, then
i get error: file not found and the menu is redisplayed
I have to enter the edit option in the grub menu, and make the following
changes:
1. Replace set root=(hd0,3) with root=(hd0,3)
2. Add the end of line in the last line (which defines the initial ramdisk)
Only after the above adjustments I'm able to boot with ctrl+x.

Bug#524371: The package ships with it

2009-10-10 Thread Rogério Brito
severity 524371 normal
tags moreinfo
thanks

Hi, Vincent.

There must be something wrong somewhere, because the original package
*does* have the file mentioned:

http://packages.debian.org/sid/powerpc/pbbuttonsd/filelist

For this reason, I'm lowering the severity and tagging it moreinfo.
Please, could you give us more details regarding since when you started
seeing this?

Also, did you happen to have any power-related package installed?

Can you reinstall the package? Does this fix the problem? If not, can
you purge pbbuttons and reinstall it? Does this fix the problem? This
would, of course, give some hint that other program may have messed up
with pbbuttonsd's configurations (perhaps even a logging/rotating
system).

I'm CC'ing the -powerpc list so that other people can comment on their
experience here.

Regards, Rogério Brito.

Bug#549757: osmo: FTBFS: icalss.h:37:27: error: icalcomponent.h: No such file or directory

2009-10-10 Thread Eike Nicklas
Thanks for reporting this. I reproduced the FTBFS on i386 with
libical-dev 0.44-1, it does not occur with 0.43-3.

Fathi, I am cc-ing you since you're maintaining libical. Do you know of
any changes, in 0.44 that might cause such a problem (see below)? Thanks
for your help!

In the osmo sources, ical is include like this:

#include libical/ical.h
#include libical/icalss.h
#include libical/icalset.h
#include libical/icalclassify.h

Will also contact upstream about this.

Thanks,
Eike

Package: kde4
Version: 5
Severity: serious

After upgrading to latest kde4 libqtcore4 segfault during kde
startup in splashscreen.
KDE startup is very slow.
I get a window to report the kde bug but kde is on its knees and I
don't know how to save the trace.

If I install the -dbg package startup becomes faster and there is no
segfault.

I know the report is very poor but I don't know how to improve it.

I'm running amd64 on an Intel Core 2 Duo.

thanks

First of all, you reported your bug against a meta package that does not exist
since april, so your bug has been rotting in the BTS reported against not
existant package until a few days ago somebody realized and re-asigned.

I am afraid with a bug report so poor there is not much that can be done.
Also you did not mention from what version to what version where you upgrading,
that would have been like the minimun information to give. Or if you upgraded
something else at the same time.
If you are still having issues, please try to track where the problem is
then report it.
When you are unsure about what is going on your system, you always can try
first writing an email to the users mailing lists and seek for help there.

Ana

Hi,

xiphos currently build-depends on gnome-spell. However this is a
deprecated package that is being removed.

As it doesn’t even actually depend on it, maybe this build dependency is
not even needed anymore.

Cheers,

Bug#543375: initscripts: last superblock write time in future, occurring sometimes

2009-10-10 Thread Tomasz Grzelak

Hello,

like I was afraid, having used older versions of e2fslibs and progs did
not change the situation, today (Sat 10.10.2009) I got the error again.
Next I updated all packages, and while rebooting I got the same error
again :(

Please have a look at the picture I took with my camera:

https://hellfire666.no-ip.org/~myst/deb_error.jpg

This bug has not been fixed.

How about others? Are you still affected by this problem?

B. Regards,

Package: akonadi-server
Version: 1.2.1-1
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

Akonadi-server shouldn't be in debian. Perhaps it could be in experimental.
It doesn't work, i try to fix something and restart it. It doesn't close mysqld
so the old instance has the lock over the database and the new instance will
give one more problem.
As in bug #547557, it claims D-Bus isn't working when it is actually working.
Korganizer and Kaddressbook shouldn't depend on it, because i tried to edit
the control file, remove the akonadi dep, and they were working.
This is against debian policy, take a look here:
http://www.debian.org/doc/maint-guide/ch-dreq.en.html#s-control

Debian policy also says that a package should be tested.
Looks like akonadi-server was never tested on a clean box, because i've never
have seen it working, and surely i did try several times.

Goodbye

akonadi is one of the pillar technologies being KDE 4 and it is here to

If your partition gets full, losing data is something to be expected.
This is hardly kmail's fault. If you think kmail should handle this, you
can ask upstream in http://bugs.kde.org to implement a check of free space
available before downloading emails (I would not be surprised if exists
actually, check before file).

But in any case, I think it is better you monitor usually how much free
space you have to avoid losing data from any app you are running.

Bug#550516: libopal3.6.6: uninstallable on i386, was built with libx264

2009-10-10 Thread Simon McVittie
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA256

Package: libopal3.6.6
Version: 3.6.6~dfsg-1
Severity: serious
Justification: uninstallable on i386

The PTS page http://packages.qa.debian.org/o/opal.html says it all:
 libopal3.6.6/i386 unsatisfiable Depends: libx264-76 (= 1:0.svn20090928)

This could be fixed with a binary NMU, but since Opal currently has a release
critical bug that will need a sourceful upload, I'm not going to bother the
release team about it.

It appears that the maintainer build of libopal was done with libx264-dev
installed. libx264 is not part of Debian due to patent issues (presumably the
maintainer got it from debian-multimedia).

Please do not build packages for upload in anything other than a normal
Debian unstable system. pbuilder, cowbuilder and schroot/sbuild are useful
ways to do the build in a minimal unstable chroot with no non-Debian packages
(which also gives you easy verification that you have specified the
Build-Depends correctly).

The setup I use might be useful; it's described in
http://www.pseudorandom.co.uk/2008/sbuild-dm/.

If ./configure supports an option like --without-x264 or --disable-x264, it
might also be a good idea to use it in debian/rules, to cause builds done on
an unclean system to produce the same results as on a clean system.

Regards,
Simon

Bug#550168: libopal3.6.6-dbg and libopal3.6.4-dbg: error when trying to install together

2009-10-10 Thread Simon McVittie
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-

 Ralf Treinen wrote:
trying to overwrite '/usr/lib/debug/usr/bin/simpleopal', which is also in

So the problem is that usr/lib/debug/usr/bin/simpleopal is found in two
packages: libopal3.6.6-dbg and libopal3.6.4-dbg. The solution is:
 - either simply remove simpleopal debug file
 - or create another package, simpleopal-dbg, and put the debug file inside
 - or make libopal3.6.6-dbg conflicts with libopal3.6.4-dbg

The best quality solution is the 2nd, but is it worth to create another
 (debug) package for that?

Having a separate -dbg package for simpleopal does seem like overkill, and I
think the ftpmasters would (be correct to) reject it. Either of the other
solutions seems viable.

Removing debug symbols for simpleopal only impacts the ability to
get good stack traces from simpleopal's own code, not from libopal; simpleopal
has few users in popcon, and I suspect that if it ever crashes, it's much more
likely to be caused by a bug in the library than in simpleopal itself.

Having the -dbg packages conflict doesn't seem like a practical problem,
because if an Opal-based application (like Ekiga) is crashing, you only
need the debug symbols for the version of Opal that it links against,
and don't care about the other version; so you'd never need both versions
installed at the same time. If you do this you should remember to keep the
appropriate Conflicts: entry to ensure a graceful upgrade from lenny to
squeeze, though, even after intermediate versions have disappeared from the
archive.

(Disclaimer: I don't use Opal or know much about it; I'm only looking at its
bug list because I was reporting an uninstallability bug, and you seemed to
be asking for advice here...)

Bug#528938: CVE-2009-1629: generates session IDs with predictable random numbers

2009-10-10 Thread Florian Weimer
* Raphael Geissert:

Cc'ing the stable security team as I would some input from them. As
mentioned by Florian on IRC there's a bug on some browsers that
could let other websites predict the sequence of Math.random(). On
unstable the cryptojs library from stanford could be packaged and
used to generate a session id with the Fortuna-based PRNG (which is
of course not shared between websites, therefore safe from the
 Math.random() attacks),

I think it's impossible to generate random numbers which reasonably
cryptographically strong with pure Javascript code because you lack a
reliable source of entropy.

Can't you get the ID from the server instead?

Farsight2 has been rebuilt against libgupnp-1.0-3 via binNMUs, so I'm closing
this bug.

According to http://qa.debian.org/debcheck.php?dist=unstablepackage=farsight2
it should now be installable on all architectures, except hppa and ia64
(where the updated packages have been built successfully, but not uploaded
by the buildd maintainers yet).

Bug#550440: advi: CVE-2009-2295 arbitrary code execution

2009-10-10 Thread Mehdi Dogguy

 Package: advi
 Version: 1.6.0-12

 Hi,

The following CVE (Common Vulnerabilities Exposures) id was
published for camlimages. advi statically links to camlimages, so any
issues in that package are also applicable to advi. There were already
updates to camlimages for etch an lenny, so advi just needs to be
relinked using those new versions. Please coordinate these updates with
 the security team.

During last July, Thijs Kinkhorst had some problems to build correctly
build advi on etch because of the LaTeX bomb :)
I've no idea how to fix that issue but, at that time, Moritz Muehlenhoff
mentioned that the problem was fixed in oldstable-proposed and suggested
to use it as a workaround.
Has someone tried to build advi again on etch?

(CC-ing the security team to have more informations)

Cheers,

Bug#550376: treeline is broken with newer python-qt4 (4.6-1)

2009-10-10 Thread Doug Bell
Hi,

This problem is really due to a bug in PyQt 4.6. I've reported it to
the PyQt developer, and it should be fixed in the next release.

Meanwhile, I (upstream) just released TreeLine 1.2.4, which includes a
work-around that fixes this problem. It also fixes an uncommanded
horizontal scrolling of the tree view. This new release is available
from http://treeline.bellz.org.

Bug#550534: firmware-iwlwifi: iwlagn 0000:03:00.0: Microcode SW error detected. Restarting 0x82000000.

2009-10-10 Thread Wouter Cloetens
Package: firmware-iwlwifi
Version: 0.18
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

Firmware iwlwifi-4965-2.ucode version 228.61.2.24 in firmware-iwlwifi 0.18
renders the wlan interface unusable. After a couple of minutes, the
following message appears in syslog:

iwlagn :03:00.0: Microcode SW error detected. Restarting 0x8200.

after which no packets can be sent, though the interface appears up.
Simply restarting the interface brings it up again.

Downgrading to 0.17 with firmware 228.57.2.23 solves the problem for me.
However, since 0.18 is already in squeeze, that version was hard to track
down. I found it in lenny-backports ultimately:

http://www.backports.org/debian/pool/non-free/f/firmware-nonfree/firmware-iwlwifi_0.17~bpo50+1_all.deb

Googling this problem turns up hits in every distribution imaginable.
Other Debian bugs that are possibly related are 546213 and 548749.
Allegedly Ubunty Karmic Koala fixes the problem, however, package
linux-firmware_1.21_all.deb also contains 228.61.2.24. A combination of
kernel driver and firmware version perhaps?

Intel seems unaware of the problem. 228.61.2.24 is still the latest version
on:
 http://intellinuxwireless.org/?p=iwlwifin=downloads

This is very serious. Please revert to the older microcode version.

Bug#550539: mongrel-cluster: Incorrect init.d script dependencies and runlevels

2009-10-10 Thread Petter Reinholdtsen

Package: mongrel-cluster
Version: 1.0.5-1
Severity: serious
Tags: patch
User: initscripts-ng-de...@lists.alioth.debian.org
Usertags: incorrect-dependency incorrect-runlevels

With dependency based boot sequencing, I discovered what I believe is
a bug in the init.d scripts of this package. The dependency list is
incomplete. It uses files in /usr/ and should depend on $remote_fs,
and it used to start after syslog and should probably continue to do
so. The runlevel list is empty, and this do not reflect the arguments
used by update-rc.d.

URL:
http://refspecs.freestandards.org/LSB_2.1.0/LSB-generic/LSB-generic/initscrcomconv.html

documents the LSB header format. Some debian notes are available from
URL: http://wiki.debian.org/LSBInitScripts .

This patch should solve the issue. Without it, the script will fail
to start during boot and stop during shutdown. Please upload a fix
for this into unstable soon or object if we should not NMU to solve
this issue.

Bug#528938: CVE-2009-1629: generates session IDs with predictable random numbers

2009-10-10 Thread Raphael Geissert
2009/10/10 Florian Weimer f...@deneb.enyo.de:
 * Raphael Geissert:

Cc'ing the stable security team as I would some input from them.  As
mentioned by Florian on IRC there's a bug on some browsers that
could let other websites predict the sequence of Math.random(). On
unstable the cryptojs library from stanford could be packaged and
used to generate a session id with the Fortuna-based PRNG (which is
of course not shared between websites, therefore safe from the
 Math.random() attacks),

I think it's impossible to generate random numbers which reasonably
cryptographically strong with pure Javascript code because you lack a
 reliable source of entropy.

The cryptojs library uses mouse movements (at least) as entropy data,
which makes it a very good candidate. The PRNG can not be used until
it has enough entropy data, based on its predictor.

Can't you get the ID from the server instead?

It should be possible, yes, but not without modifying many parts of
the code. From the very first time the client connects to the server a
session is started.

My real concern about ajaxterm is that it somewhat eases the
possibility of brute force attacks because none of the policy layers
that are designed to prevent remote brute force attacks are applied.

Cheers,

With dependency based boot sequencing, I discovered what I believe is
a bug in the init.d script. The script depend on mysqld, a provide
that no other script provide. I suspect it want the mysql facility
provided by the mysql script. The dependency is hard, while the
package only suggest the mysql-server package. Because of this, I
believe that dependency should be a soft dependency (should-*). Next,
the script depend on files in /usr/, and should depend on $remote_fs,
not $local_fs.

This patch should fix the issues. The hard mysqld dependency is
changed to a soft mysql. Setting severity serious as the package will
fail to install because the mysqld provides do not exist.

Package: python-poker-network
Version: 1.7.5-1
Severity: important

/etc/init.d/python-poker-network currently specifies

# Required-Start: $local_fs $network mysqld
# Required-Stop: $local_fs $network mysqld

where the presence of mysqld in those lines is problematic on
systems that use dependency-based boot sequencing (now the default!)
for two reasons:

- As the package's dependencies reflect, the relevant MySQL instance
  could well be running elsewhere.

- Regardless, its service name is mysql, not mysqld.

As such, please correct the relevant portion of the script's header to

# Required-Start:$local_fs $network
# Required-Stop: $local_fs $network
# Should-Start: mysql
# Should-Stop: mysql

(There is no need to repeat $local_fs in Should-*.)

Thanks!

Bug#550440: advi: CVE-2009-2295 arbitrary code execution

Current problem is not to rebuild advi, but that camlimages' tiffread.c seems
to be vulnerable as well. This should be fixed first in a follow-up DSA first.
Upstream doesn't seem reachable and the fedora guys don't seem to have time
either. Maybe you guys want to look into it?

Cheers
Steffen

Hi

According to upstream:

Version 1.1.2 (released 11-Aug-2009)

  * security fix: validate the 'view' parameter to avoid XSS attack
  * security fix: avoid printing illegal parameter names and values

http://viewvc.tigris.org/source/browse/*checkout*/viewvc/tags/1.1.2/CHANGES

The two upstream patches appear to be:
http://viewvc.tigris.org/source/browse/viewvc/branches/1.0.x/lib/viewvc.py?r1=2214r2=2213pathrev=2214
http://viewvc.tigris.org/source/browse/viewvc/branches/1.0.x/lib/viewvc.py?r1=2219r2=2218pathrev=2219

Could you test the patches and prepare updated packages for unstable/stable?

A CVE id has been requested and we'll forward it to this bugreport once it's
allocated.

Bug#550010: [PATCH] hfsplus: Refuse to mount volumes larger than 2TB

2009-10-10 Thread Ben Hutchings
As found in http://bugs.debian.org/550010, hfsplus is using type u32
rather than sector_t for some sector number calculations.

In particular, hfsplus_get_block() does:

u32 ablock, dblock, mask;
...
map_bh(bh_result, sb, (dblock HFSPLUS_SB(sb).fs_shift) +
HFSPLUS_SB(sb).blockoffset + (iblock  mask));

I am not confident that I can find and fix all cases where a sector
number may be truncated. For now, avoid data loss by refusing to mount
HFS+ volumes with more than 2^32 sectors (2TB).

Bug#543375: Workaround for this issue if caused by TZ difference

2009-10-10 Thread Jan Muszynski
A fix until the init scripts work correctly:
From http://lwn.net/Articles/264498/

---quote---
From: Theodore Tso
Date: Tue, 8 Jan 2008 13:15:25 -0500
...
Newer e2fsprogs display a better message, and you can set an
/etc/e2fsck.conf setting:

[options]
buggy_init_scripts = 1

That will fix the this issue. The problem you are facing is that you
have your hardware clock set to ticking localtime, instead of GMT.
...
The problem on the Linux side is that some distributions, and Ubuntu
is the worse offender, but probably not the only one, do not correctly
set the system clock before they run fsck. And if you live east of
GMT, such that your localtime offset is positive instead of negative,
then time can appear to go backwards and e2fsck can't trust the last
superblock check time. Old versions of e2fsprogs display a funny
large time interval due to an integer overflow bug; that's since been
fixed. (This bug doesn't support people in the US, because of our
time zone offset, but it tends to affect people in Europe who are
dual-booting with Windows and hance have their hardware clock tick
localtime.)

Subject: /sbin/hwclock: Hwclock interperates saved local time as GMT
Package: util-linux
Version: 2.15.1~rc1-1
File: /sbin/hwclock
Severity: important

I am using localtime on my system, set in /etc/rcS and elsewhere.
Latest and greatest from Sid consistantly reads the saved hw time as GMT.
This then gets translated to localtime which is now incorrect.

Ntpdate will reset to the correct localtime.

The resulting shift interferes with dovecot requiring two restarts of
dovecot before imap3d will work.

Since this has not been reported elsewhere (that I have seen), the problem
could be related to the fact that I live east of Greenwich so my localtime
is later.

Package: initscripts
Version: 2.87dsf-2
Severity: important

Dear maintainers,

I am not sure whom this bug belongs, please reassign accordingly.

Since some time (probably update of initscripts that pulled in insserv,
but hard to say) it happens sometimes that at booting time I see:
...
checking filesystems
... sda3 ... Last superblock write time in future
...
Inconsistencies found, please check manually
(copied from by memory, but I guess you know what it is). The point is
that it seems that the last superblock write time is in local time
which in my case is CEST (GMT+2), and the check time of fsck is in GMT,
that gives 2 hours difference.

Now, I don't remember ever having seen this problem, so I assume that it
surfaced with the new uploads.

This is quite a pain since everytime it happens a full check has to be
done, which takes ages.

Thanks for any insightfull remarks and fixes

Norbert
