Bug#550457: Remote denial of service via pathological performance of regular expressions
Package: python-django Version: 1.0.2-1+lenny1 Severity: serious Tags: security Django's forms library included field types which perform regular-expression based validation of email addresses and URLs. Certain addresses/URLs could trigger a pathological performance case in this regular expression, resulting in the server process/thread becoming unresponsive, and consuming excessive CPU over an extended period of time. If deliberately triggered, this could result in an effective denial-of-service attack. block 550461 by 547434 thanks Emilio Pozuelo Monfort wrote: Thanks for the report. That solution is not good though, we don't want to use a code copy. I'll look at this issue, perhaps we just need a new gnome-main-menu (to get a new libslab). Actually the libslab packages provided by gnome-main-menu were just a code copy too, and libslab is an independent library. I may workaround this if #550461 takes too long. However, this binary package will disappear, so that we can cope with the large upcoming changes in the list of supported modules upstream. Instead of depending on it, you need to make gramps depend only on the packages corresponding to the modules it is actually using. The output of a script looking at these dependencies was put on this page: http://wiki.debian.org/GnomePythonSplitting These dependencies may not be entirely accurate, but they should be a good starting point. Please, could you give us more details regarding since when you started seeing this? Also, did you happen to have any power-related package installed? Can you reinstall the package? Does this fix the problem? If not, can you purge pbbuttons and reinstall it? Does this fix the problem? This would, of course, give some hint that other program may have messed up with pbbuttonsd's configurations (perhaps even a logging/rotating system). I'm CC'ing the -powerpc list so that other people can comment on their experience here. First of all, you reported your bug against a meta package that does not exist since april, so your bug has been rotting in the BTS reported against not existant package until a few days ago somebody realized and re-asigned. I am afraid with a bug report so poor there is not much that can be done. Also you did not mention from what version to what version where you upgrading, that would have been like the minimun information to give. Or if you upgraded something else at the same time. If you are still having issues, please try to track where the problem is then report it. When you are unsure about what is going on your system, you always can try first writing an email to the users mailing lists and seek for help there. Ana ---End Message---

Bug#543375: initscripts: last superblock write time in future, occurring sometimes
Hello, like I was afraid, having used older versions of e2fslibs and progs did not change the situation, today (Sat 10.10.2009) I got the error again. Next I updated all packages, and while rebooting I got the same error again :( Please have a look at the picture I took with my camera: https://hellfire666.no-ip.org/~myst/deb_error.jpg This bug has not been fixed. How about others? Are you still affected by this problem? B. Regards, -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-rc-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Perhaps it could be in experimental. It doesn't work, i try to fix something and restart it. It doesn't close mysqld so the old instance has the lock over the database and the new instance will give one more problem. As in bug #547557, it claims D-Bus isn't working when it is actually working. Korganizer and Kaddressbook shouldn't depend on it, because i tried to edit the control file, remove the akonadi dep, and they were working. This is against debian policy, take a look here: http://www.debian.org/doc/maint-guide/ch-dreq.en.html#s-control Debian policy also says that a package should be tested. If you think kmail should handle this, you can ask upstream in http://bugs.kde.org to implement a check of free space available before downloading emails (I would not be surprised if exists actually, check before file). Bug#550516: libopal3.6.6: uninstallable on i386, was built with libx264
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hash: SHA256 Package: libopal3.6.6 Version: 3.6.6~dfsg-1 Severity: serious Justification: uninstallable on i386 The PTS page http://packages.qa.debian.org/o/opal.html says it all: libopal3.6.6/i386 unsatisfiable Depends: libx264-76 (= 1:0.svn20090928) This could be fixed with a binary NMU, but since Opal currently has a release critical bug that will need a sourceful upload, I'm not going to bother the release team about it. It appears that the maintainer build of libopal was done with libx264-dev installed. libx264 is not part of Debian due to patent issues (presumably the maintainer got it from debian-multimedia). Please do not build packages for upload in anything other than a normal Debian unstable system. pbuilder, cowbuilder and schroot/sbuild are useful ways to do the build in a minimal unstable chroot with no non-Debian packages (which also gives you easy verification that you have specified the Build-Depends correctly). The setup I use might be useful; it's described in http://www.pseudorandom.co.uk/2008/sbuild-dm/. If ./configure supports an option like --without-x264 or --disable-x264, it might also be a good idea to use it in debian/rules, to cause builds done on an unclean system to produce the same results as on a clean system. Bug#550168: libopal3.6.6-dbg and libopal3.6.4-dbg: error when trying to install together
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hash: SHA256 On Fri, 09 Oct 2009 at 11:24:37 +0200, Eugen Dedu wrote: Ralf Treinen wrote: trying to overwrite '/usr/lib/debug/usr/bin/simpleopal', which is also in package libopal3.6.4-dbg 0:3.6.4~dfsg-1 So the problem is that usr/lib/debug/usr/bin/simpleopal is found in two packages: libopal3.6.6-dbg and libopal3.6.4-dbg. The solution is: - either simply remove simpleopal debug file - or create another package, simpleopal-dbg, and put the debug file inside - or make libopal3.6.6-dbg conflicts with libopal3.6.4-dbg The best quality solution is the 2nd, but is it worth to create another (debug) package for that? Having a separate -dbg package for simpleopal does seem like overkill, and I think the ftpmasters would (be correct to) reject it. Either of the other solutions seems viable. Removing debug symbols for simpleopal only impacts the ability to get good stack traces from simpleopal's own code, not from libopal; simpleopal has few users in popcon, and I suspect that if it ever crashes, it's much more likely to be caused by a bug in the library than in simpleopal itself. Having the -dbg packages conflict doesn't seem like a practical problem, because if an Opal-based application (like Ekiga) is crashing, you only need the debug symbols for the version of Opal that it links against, and don't care about the other version; so you'd never need both versions installed at the same time. If you do this you should remember to keep the appropriate Conflicts: entry to ensure a graceful upgrade from lenny to squeeze, though, even after intermediate versions have disappeared from the archive. (Disclaimer: I don't use Opal or know much about it; I'm only looking at its bug list because I was reporting an uninstallability bug, and you seemed to be asking for advice here...) Can't you get the ID from the server instead? It should be possible, yes, but not without modifying many parts of the code. From the very first time the client connects to the server a session is started. My real concern about ajaxterm is that it somewhat eases the possibility of brute force attacks because none of the policy layers that are designed to prevent remote brute force attacks are applied. Bug#550440: advi: CVE-2009-2295 arbitrary code execution
On Sun, 11 Oct 2009 07:38:01 am Mehdi Dogguy wrote: Michael S Gilbert a écrit : Package: advi Version: 1.6.0-12 Severity: serious Tags: security Hi, The following CVE (Common Vulnerabilities Exposures) id was published for camlimages. advi statically links to camlimages, so any issues in that package are also applicable to advi. There were already updates to camlimages for etch an lenny, so advi just needs to be relinked using those new versions. Please coordinate these updates with the security team. During last July, Thijs Kinkhorst had some problems to build correctly build advi on etch because of the LaTeX bomb :) I've no idea how to fix that issue but, at that time, Moritz Muehlenhoff mentioned that the problem was fixed in oldstable-proposed and suggested to use it as a workaround. Has someone tried to build advi again on etch? Current problem is not to rebuild advi, but that camlimages' tiffread.c seems to be vulnerable as well. This should be fixed first in a follow-up DSA first. Upstream doesn't seem reachable and the fedora guys don't seem to have time either. Maybe you guys want to look into it? Bug#550010: [PATCH] hfsplus: Refuse to mount volumes larger than 2TB
As found in http://bugs.debian.org/550010, hfsplus is using type u32 rather than sector_t for some sector number calculations. In particular, hfsplus_get_block() does: u32 ablock, dblock, mask; ... map_bh(bh_result, sb, (dblock HFSPLUS_SB(sb).fs_shift) + HFSPLUS_SB(sb).blockoffset + (iblock mask)); I am not confident that I can find and fix all cases where a sector number may be truncated. For now, avoid data loss by refusing to mount HFS+ volumes with more than 2^32 sectors (2TB). Bug#543375: Workaround for this issue if caused by TZ difference
A fix until the init scripts work correctly: From http://lwn.net/Articles/264498/ ---quote--- From: Theodore Tso Date: Tue, 8 Jan 2008 13:15:25 -0500 ... Newer e2fsprogs display a better message, and you can set an /etc/e2fsck.conf setting: [options] buggy_init_scripts = 1 That will fix the this issue. The problem you are facing is that you have your hardware clock set to ticking localtime, instead of GMT. ... The problem on the Linux side is that some distributions, and Ubuntu is the worse offender, but probably not the only one, do not correctly set the system clock before they run fsck. And if you live east of GMT, such that your localtime offset is positive instead of negative, then time can appear to go backwards and e2fsck can't trust the last superblock check time. Old versions of e2fsprogs display a funny large time interval due to an integer overflow bug; that's since been fixed. (This bug doesn't support people in the US, because of our time zone offset, but it tends to affect people in Europe who are dual-booting with Windows and hance have their hardware clock tick localtime.) ... ---end quote--- -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-rc-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Latest and greatest from Sid consistantly reads the saved hw time as GMT. This then gets translated to localtime which is now incorrect. Ntpdate will reset to the correct localtime. The resulting shift interferes with dovecot requiring two restarts of dovecot before imap3d will work. Since this has not been reported elsewhere (that I have seen), the problem could be related to the fact that I live east of Greenwich so my localtime is later. -- System Information: Debian Release: squeeze/sid APT prefers unstable APT policy: (990, 'unstable'), (650, 'testing'), (500, 'stable'), (1, 'experimental') Architecture: i386 (i686) Kernel: Linux 2.6.30-davidb (PREEMPT) Locale: LANG=en_US, LC_CTYPE=en_US (charmap=ISO-8859-1) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Versions of packages util-linux depends on: ii libc6 2.9-18GNU C Library: Shared libraries ii libncurses55.7+20090523-1shared libraries for terminal hand ii libselinux12.0.81-1 SELinux shared libraries ii libslang2 2.1.4-3 The S-Lang programming library - r ii libuuid1 1.41.6-1 Universally Unique ID library ii lsb-base 3.2-22Linux Standard Base 3.2 init scrip ii tzdata 2009i-1 time zone and daylight-saving time ii zlib1g 1:1.2.3.3.dfsg-13 compression library - runtime util-linux recommends no packages. Since some time (probably update of initscripts that pulled in insserv, but hard to say) it happens sometimes that at booting time I see: ... checking filesystems ... sda3 ... Last superblock write time in future ... Inconsistencies found, please check manually (copied from by memory, but I guess you know what it is). The point is that it seems that the last superblock write time is in local time which in my case is CEST (GMT+2), and the check time of fsck is in GMT, that gives 2 hours difference. Now, I don't remember ever having seen this problem, so I assume that it surfaced with the new uploads. This is quite a pain since everytime it happens a full check has to be done, which takes ages.
