Bug#552525: broken alternatives for aptitude

 Hi,

Hi!

I love these bugs. ;) Fixed upfront yesterday, and then the bug report

JFTR: jackd-0.116 cannot be built against libcelt-0.7.0, but jackd-0.118
requires libcelt-0.7.0, which just entered unstable a few days ago.
libcelt's API has changed. The new jackd-0.118 upload will fix this bug.

All I have to do is close it from the changelog. (hence I love these
bugs)

Ok, reproduced with tracker. Looking up what's going on.

My bet is that it fails when it encounters a specific symbol file

It doesn't seem to be the case. It fails doing
$dependencies{$cur_field}{$subdep} eq '' when the first arg is a Dpkg::Version
object and not a string.

So it's definitely an RC bug.

Bug#536683: keyboard-configuration postinst stuck in loop

Package: keyboard-configuration

This still happens here for me.
Moving xorg.conf out of the way doesn't help.

Note: I just realized that this bug was reported against console-setup
while I'm seeing it in keyboard-configuration with console-setup-mini.

Note that I didn't choose Other in the first place. Could it be that
the script tries to interpret Other as 'Go back to previous menu', but
then just gets the cached debconf options again, thus ending up stuck
in this menu loop of going into USA and back via Other?

Whoever wrote this line:
  elif default_variant=$RET [ $RET = other ]; then
should be shot. Seriously, this script is one of the worst with respect to
code readability I've seen in a long time. No wonder it doesn't work.

P.S.
I got keyboard-configuration to install by doing the following changes:
1. Removing the embedded assignment from the elif statement
2. Removing the conditional leading to exit 10.
I ended up with a sensible /etc/default/keyboard so I guess it worked as
expected then.

So it's definitely an RC bug.

But it affects only packages build-depending on packages with symbols
files having a * Build-Depends-Package: in their symbols files
(like libgtk2.0-0). That's the way Dpkg::Version objects are introduced
into the mix whereas otherwise all the work is done with scalars...

I have pushed a fix in the sid branch of the dpkg git repo. I would be
glad if you could test it before I upload.

Bug#556922: Console resize freezes mc causing system crash/hang

2009-11-18 Thread Benny Baumann
Package: mc
Version: 2:4.6.2~git20080311-4
Severity: critical
Justification: breaks the whole system

When running mc inside a screen session via SSH mc crashes as soon as you resize
the window in which mc is displayed. When this error occures mc freezes and
allocates memory in an endless loop in the background. Once system resources
have been reached the entire system freezes. Sometimes (tested with a system
with a Xen 3.2-1 hypervisor) this even might kernel-panic the hypervisor.

Steps to verify (the ones that worked for me):
- Fire up a DomU with Xen (3.2-1)
- Connect to that DomU by SSH
- apt-get install screen mc
- Fire up new screen session or take over an existing with screen -d -RR
- In that screen session start mc
- Resize the Window of the screen session
- MC freezes (now wait a few seconds for MC to fill up the memory)
-- The system completely hangs, probably with Kernel Panic

On the step where mc starts to hang have a view on top or htop regarding mc's
memory usage which suddently increases rapidly. If you kill mc fast enough
(before it reaches the maximum RAM available) no crash of the VM happens.

Regards,
Benny.

(hence I love these
 bugs)

And FCFTR (further clarification, etc) celt in jack is used just by the
netjack backend. There has been quite some recent work to clean up and
improve that bit of jack recently, including syncing the netjack1
implementation between jack1 and jack2.

No, ia32-apt-get had been in unstable for some time as a replacement for
ia32-libs, but it has been removed because many people (including, most
relevant, the FTP masters) considered it to be too buggy. You can read
the discussion in the threads starting at
http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2009/06/msg00902.html and
http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2009/06/msg00955.html.

Since ia32-apt-get does not exist anymore and thus cannot be fixed to
stop shipping this diverted /usr/bin/aptitude, the only option is to
declare a conflict with it in the aptitude package, AFAICS.

Bug#552429: MPI: fix alternatives mess with runtime environment

Thanks for the patch. It indeed looks cleaner than my changes but I
tested them with several MPI implementations installed and it always
gave proper results. I'll test and apply your patch nevertheless, as it
should not have side effects. Thanks for working on that!

I'm drowning in work at the moment, so I will not be able to upload a

Package: dpkg-dev
Version: 1.15.5.1
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

Hi,

since the update of dpkg-dev from 1.15.4 to 1.15.5, my packages fail to
build with the following message:

Can't call method epoch on an undefined value at
/usr/share/perl5/Dpkg/Version.pm line 132.
dh_shlibdeps: dpkg-shlibdeps returned exit code 2

Marking as grave as I'm now unable to build any packages.

Cheers,
Michael

Bug#552525: broken alternatives for aptitude

No, ia32-apt-get had been in unstable for some time as a replacement for
ia32-libs, but it has been removed because many people (including, most
relevant, the FTP masters) considered it to be too buggy. You can read
the discussion in the threads starting at
 http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2009/06/msg00902.html and
 http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2009/06/msg00955.html.

Since ia32-apt-get does not exist anymore and thus cannot be fixed to
stop shipping this diverted /usr/bin/aptitude, the only option is to
declare a conflict with it in the aptitude package, AFAICS.

Yeah, I think that's exactly the right solution. Thanks for the info
(probably I should learn to use Google before I talk :P ).

Bug#556939: libgfshare-bin: reconstruction results in garbage

2009-11-18 Thread Florian Zumbiehl
Package: libgfshare-bin
Version: 1.0.2-1

Well, the subject basically says it all. Severity critical as even the
package description suggests using it for cryptographic keys, which
the access to large amounts of data can depend on, in which case the
inability to reconstruct the key could result in massive data loss.

I think that it is a bug in it. Could You make test in Your

 1 step: apt-get install imagemagik
 2 step: extract file debian/debian-blueish-wallpaper.svg
3 step: try convert it to png.

If it crashes then You will able to reassign the bug to imagemagik,
but in my environment it is unreproducible.

Bug#538086: installation-reports: Installation works, but neither is user created nor a root password set

2009-11-18 Thread Yaroslav Rozhylo
Hi!

The second problem I encountered was that neither my user account
was created
during installation nor was the root password set. This left the
system fairly
unusable until I used a rescue system to mount my encrypted disk,
added a user
to /etc/passwd and /etc/shadow (without a password) and subsequently
added
this user to the sudoers group. In this way I could aquire root on
my new
 system.

This is confusing; maybe your media was corrupted in some way since I
don't remember of seeing this report and it is used in every
installation. Could you try to reproduce it and report back to us?

I actually tried twice, though with the same installation media. I
don't have any plans to reinstall in the near future though (at least
not until the multi-arch stuff screws up my system again.. ;) ) so
 sorry about that.

I meet the same problem while installing unstable from
debian-503-i386-businesscard.iso today.
After solving some grub2 troubles and booting - can't login user at all!
Boot into rescue mode - there is no user in /etc/passwd and /etc/shadow files.

Steps to reproduce:
1. Boot from CD debian-503-i386-businesscard.iso
2. Advanced Installation - KDE - Expert mode
3. LVM: / and /home
4. unstable
5. targeted initrd
6. choose hide passwords and root login through sudo
7. can't login after boot

Steps to login:
8. boot again from CD in rescue mode
9. enter shell and mount home
10. check there is no user in passwd and shadow
11. adduser
12. reboot and login user

I had tried to reproduce the same with stable, max initrd and grub
(not grub2) - everything was ok, withot errors.
So, the problem is in point 4 or 5.

Dear maintainer,

I just spotted this issue during a check on RC bugs and it seems to me
you've basically abandoned this package. There are lintian issues (even
a warning) and this security issue (which is known for your package for
quite a while now).

Since there are only a few users according to popcon and no upload of
yours since 2006, I'm considering a QA removal request. Please speak up
if you want to keep maintaining this package. Otherwise I'll proceed in
10 days with the removal request.

Thanks for your cooperation!

Thanks for the patch. It indeed looks cleaner than my changes but I

Yeah, but the unconditional --removal-all looks a bit scary :-)

I'm drowning in work at the moment, so I will not be able to upload a

Do you want me to upload an NMU ? I have time this week.

I'll also use the same code in mpich2, and test them together.

retitle 556939 libgfshare-bin: can produce broken shares containing foo.000

thanks

A modified version of your test case eventually failed for me: in the first
run it failed after 157 split/recombine attempts, and in the second run it
failed after 527 attempts.

One thing that the two failures had in common is that component x.000 was
produced and was used to remake the share; with the default 3-of-5 setting,
this can be expected to happen in around 2% of calls to gfsplit.

The mathematics of Shamir secret sharing do not work correctly with x_i = 0,
i.e. a component foo.000, so the library should reject any sharenrs array
that contains 0, and the utilities should not produce such arrays. I'll
prepare a patch this evening.

Daniel, do you agree with this diagnosis?

Thanks,
Simon

Forgot to mention: if you have lost data as a result of this bug, but you
still have access to *more than* the threshold number of shares of the secret,
then you can recover by combining the threshold number of parts without
including foo.000.

(For instance, if you have a 3-of-5 share with secring.gpg.000, .001
on a USB stick and .100, .101, .102 on three different machines, recover
secring.gpg by combining parts .001, .100 and .101.)

I have no idea about how this API works so I do not know if udev or the

Bug#556945: libc-bin: getent is used in postinst (in other packages) before it is working

2009-11-18 Thread Vincent Danjean
Package: libc-bin
Version: 2.10.1-7
Severity: serious
Justification: Can break upgrade

  Hi,

I just tried to upgrade an unstable system (that has not been upgraded for
several months). The upgrade fails due to postinst scripts trying to use
getent. It seems to me that the problem is that getent is upgraded but not yet
working because the new libc6 is not yet unpacked.
I reported this bug against libc-bin but I'm not sure it must be here.
I saw that libc-bin does not depends on libc6 (perhaps to avoid circular
dependencies). However, there is a problem that need to be fixed.

Here is the problematic part of my apt-get dist-upgrade:

Restarting services possibly affected by the upgrade:

Bug#555834: Reassign to python2.5

2009-11-18 Thread Matt Kraai
reassign 555834 python2.5
thanks

Hi,

This is a problem with /usr/lib/python2.5/ctypes/util.py, so I'm
reassigning this report to python2.5, which contains that file.

util.py contains the following regular expression:

 r'(\S+)\s+\((%s(?:, OS ABI:[^\)]*)?)\)[^/]*(/[^\(\)\s]*lib%s\.[^\(\)\s]*)'

which doesn't match on your system because OS ABI has been
translated. If it doesn't cause other problems, you should be able to
work around this problem by using the C locale.

Randomised so that you can easily strip the numbers and place them
elsewhere and thereby make it harder to guess the share numbers.

BTW, the command line parser is pretty much completely broken if you judge
it by the error messages it produces even for completely valid values as
per its own help output. In case you want to fix that, too ...

Back then I wasn't very good at cmdline parsers. Patch welcome.

And that is good for what?

If you lose a number of shares equal-to-or-greater-than the number
required to reconstruct the share, it might arguably provide you with a
short period of time in which to revoke those keys. I'd be quite happy
to receive a patch which offered an option of sequential vs. randomised
share numbers.

D.

(And no, I'm not claiming added security, just the potential of a little
more time to deal with the fact that your security is breached)

This is far from a standard installation...

I had tried to reproduce the same with stable, max initrd and grub

So, the problem is in point 4 or 5.

It is your selection of unstable. Because it is impossible to anticipate on
changes after a stable release, there is never a guarantee that a stable
installer will work correctly to install testing or unstable.

It looks like the problem you encountered is:
http://bugs.debian.org/529475

Which was solved in the user-setup component of the installer in version
1.24:
  * No longer use the -m switch of chpasswd. It uses PAM now and no
longer has this switch. The password will use settings from
libpam-runtime, so MD5 by default.

To install either testing or unstable, you should either
- use the installer for Squeeze [1]
- install stable using the Lenny installer and then upgrade

BTW, you should have been able to find the cause of the problem fairly
easily yourself by checking the syslog of the installation.

Cheers,
FJP

Bug#556939: libgfshare-bin: can produce broken shares containing foo.000

2009-11-18 Thread Florian Zumbiehl
Hi,

One thing that the two failures had in common is that component x.000 was
produced and was used to remake the share; with the default 3-of-5 setting,
this can be expected to happen in around 2% of calls to gfsplit.

That indeed seems to fit my observations.

The mathematics of Shamir secret sharing do not work correctly with x_i = 0,
i.e. a component foo.000, so the library should reject any sharenrs array
that contains 0, and the utilities should not produce such arrays. I'll
 prepare a patch this evening.

Why is it randomized anyhow? Just numbering shares from 1 would produce
more reproducible results, thus making it more likely that problems
specific to a certain use case would get noticed before it's too late.
It probably would be easier to use for some purposes, too, if file names
were easier to predict.

BTW, the command line parser is pretty much completely broken if you judge
it by the error messages it produces even for completely valid values as
per its own help output. In case you want to fix that, too ...

Well, it's totally reproducible for me. Use pbuilder, or clean up your
chroot using debfoster before building.

Your log says that it crashed into convert - imagemagik package.

Possible ; but I'm extremely surprised that you can't reproduce it.

qemu 0.11.0-3 does not have this file anymore, it's just that you have

Try 'dpkg -i /var/cache/apt/archives/qemu_0.11.0-3_amd64.deb' and try

I have dpkg 1.15.5.1, but I don't think it is a dpkg bug. As you probably
know, files in /etc are considered configuration files and are never removed
even
if the package that installed them no longer installs them. To get them
removed, one needs to purge the package. Since in our case I am upgrading and
not purging qemu, this configuration file still belongs to qemu, so dpkg cannot
allow another package to install the same file.

Package: qemu
Version: 0.11.0-1
Severity: serious
Justification: several packages can not have same files without conflict

  Hi,

As you split the package, you need that the new binary packages conflicts
with the old qemu package AND the new binary packages replaces qemu.
Else, depending on the order of the dpkg unpack, there will be error due to
file overwrite.

You also need a conflict between qemu-utils and with kvm (at least
85+dfsg-4.1 in unstable) because both of them provides /usr/bin/qemu-io
kvm 88+dfsg-1 in experimental does not provide /usr/bin/qemu-io anymore.

And eventually, both qemu 0.11.0-1 and qemu-user 0.11.0-1 try to provide the
same file /usr/share/man/man1/qemu-user.1.gz

You might wish to clone this bug if you do not want to correct all this
conflict at the same time.

  Regards,
Vincent

Severity: normal

I gave the installation permisson to download MIBs, but it was in no way
clear to me that this process would take several hours on a fast connection.

Please provide a significantly more clear warning on how long this process
takes.

(Alternatively, find a way to speed the process up, if possible).

I have dpkg 1.15.5.1, but I don't think it is a dpkg bug. As you probably
know, files in /etc are considered configuration files and are never removed
 even
if the package that installed them no longer installs them. To get them
removed, one needs to purge the package. Since in our case I am upgrading and
not purging qemu, this configuration file still belongs to qemu, so dpkg
 cannot
allow another package to install the same file.

Yes, it was I have been told. This should be fixed in version 0.11.0-5.

Bug#556983: ofono-phonesim: add trolltech to copyright file

2009-11-18 Thread Andres Salomon
Package: ofono-phonesim
Version: 1.0-1
Severity: serious

 In debian/copyright
you have the copyright holder as Intel. As far as I can tell, most
of the files are (C) Trolltech. Should probably be corrected in a
 subsequent upload.

Thanks! I will fix that in the next upload. I'm filing a bug so that
I don't forget.

Bug#556939: libgfshare-bin: can produce broken shares containing foo.000

If you lose a number of shares equal-to-or-greater-than the number

short period of time in which to revoke those keys. I'd be quite happy
to receive a patch which offered an option of sequential vs. randomised
 share numbers.

I think a more compelling rationale for non-sequential share numbers is that
it makes it more difficult for an attacker to determine how many shares there
were, and what the threshold is.

The distinction isn't arbitrarily between share numbers, it's between 0 and
every other share number; in theory, the zero'th share should be equal to the
secret itself. It seems that the splitting function doesn't output the secret
as foo.000, though... perhaps foo.000 ends up containing uninitialized memory?
The code does have some confusion between 0 meaning share number 0, and 0
meaning a share that was not supplied.

I've installed last sid snapshot into chroot and tried to call convert
util. It works fine on my environment.

LN Well, it's totally reproducible for me. Use pbuilder, or clean up your
LN chroot using debfoster before building.

Your log says that it crashed into convert - imagemagik package.

LN Possible ; but I'm extremely surprised that you can't reproduce it.

I've updated my debian-mirror, and retested it.
The bug is reproducible now.

But if i try to enter this command by hand (in
chroot or pbuilder) it works fine.

I have no idea what to think.

:(

It is an easy call to external utilitie, why it falls with one
environment and works under other?

I need to get an advice from imagemagick's maintainer.

Hi, maintainer of imagemagick!

I have the bugreport, but i don't know what to do. If I start
'convert' utilitie from terminal by hand, it will work fine. But if it
is started from debian/rules, it crashes into log (see above)

It tries to access into the temporary directory /tmp/magick-SUFFIX,
but can't.

debian/rules is:

Bug#556867: cups-pdf: strong kerning errors

I think that the pngs and pdf look the same IS the problem, and by the
way logical, as the pngs are screen shots of the PDF viewer's output.

In the PDFs and PNGs, a can see obvious problems concerning the kerning
 of the font:

 example:

google.png: the first 'o' is way to near to the 'g' of google. Also
between the 'g' and the 'l' in the word google is not enough space.

Ok, I checked that again - with Firefox (or any related browser) I get
exactly the kerning errors shown. With Opera the page looks just fine. I
remember in the past several issues with PostScript-Code generated by
Firefox.

This issue cannot be fixed by CUPS-PDF, since probably it is some
trouble with the original PostScript-Code (generated by Firefox). In
case it is an issue of the processing of this PS-code that has to be
fixed by GhostScript which is the utility CUPS-PDF employs internally to
convert PS to PDF.

Regards,
Volker
