This is the case, or at least, it should be.

However, the whole idea of having source package which do not produce
at least a binary of the same name is fundamentally broken, and I have
spoken repeatedly against doing it.

Our difference of opinion is over whether showing the lecture every time
is a failure or just an expected behavior when choosing to use RAMRUN.

However, after re-reading the FHS sections on the various /var subdirs,
I now believe that /var/lib may be a better location for the state
information to reside in than /var/run. I'll raise this question with
sudo upstream.

I don't think so. I get about one or so a year for this package.

One day I'll rename my several dozen r-cran-* packages such that all their
source are also called r-cran-* but the renaming and stay in NEW is such a
hazzle that I've shied away from it so far...

Bug#581337: sm: SIGSEGV on armel

2010-05-12 Thread Dirk Eddelbuettel

reassign 581337 screen-message
thanks

'sm' is the source for r-cran-sm which is not the screen-message source
giving you the sm binary.

That would make this a bug in the linux-2.6 package, not nfs-common. I
am reassigning this, though I cannot reproduce this on 2.6.32-12.

Note that NFS servers do not normally authenticate remote users; they
rely on clients to provide correct uids and gids. Therefore it is the
client-side group configuration you need to consider, not the
server-side configuration.

Please check that this is reproducible in a Debian-packaged kernel, and
if so then please specify more about the user and group configuration.

Ben.

The only affect I see this will have is that an installed linux-image meta
package will be updated. That might get a new kernel installed or not.

But how does that change anything for the system? It does not mean the
new kernel will be used at all. It does not mean older kernel images
will be removed. It does not change the kernel the system is currently
running. It in no way means udev will actually work.

This really reminds me of the Windows world: You have moved your
mouse. This change will only take affect after a reboot. Reboot now?

When will you (meaning upstream) finally stabilize the udev api or allow
for transitions?

The new version still fails with the same error:

Unpacking psi-plus-icons (from .../psi-plus-icons_0.15~svn2353-1_all.deb) ...
dpkg: error processing
/var/cache/apt/archives/psi-plus-icons_0.15~svn2353-1_all.deb (--unpack):

dpkg-deb: subprocess paste killed by signal (Broken pipe)

It looks to me as if this file is packaged into both packages at the
same time (but should go only into one of them) since dpkg does argue
about the same version of psi-plus and psi-plus-icons.

In the Debian policy I see:

the init.d scripts must handle this correctly.

"... _must_ handle ..."

And sudo doesn't handle this correctly. So it's policy violation.
Where I'm wrong?

MI'm not an expert in Debian policy. So if there is no policy violation
change severity, but don't close the bug, it exists!

You assert that there is a policy violation where there is none, and
I've already explained how you can achieve a trivial resolution of the
behavior that bothers you with the existing packages.

Re-opening this bug without providing some further explanation of what
you think sudo should do differently will generate no useful result.

Well, my issue seems to be the same as the reporter's (Hans-J. Ullrich).
At least I get (almost) the same kernel messages:

  [drm] nouveau : PFIFO_INTR 0x0010 - Ch

repeated a lot of times. See the other similarities in Message 22:

  http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=580894#22

Perhaps Jeff Ratliff had a different issue.

For those who get the same message, it would be interesting to know
  * the versions of libdrm-nouveau1 and xserver-xorg-video-nouveau,
  * whether X starts (this can be known by looking at the old Xorg
log file after rebooting with a working kernel, or by ssh),
  * whether one can ssh the machine (of course, there must be a SSH
server, and this can be tested with a working kernel). Well,
whether one can ping the machine could be sufficient.

Bug#581428: dash: exit with syntax error on configure file

2010-05-12 Thread Yves-Alexis Perez
Package: dash
Version: 0.5.5.1-4
Severity: grave
Justification: breaks unrelated package

Hey,

I'm not sure if it's the same bug as #581351 (not sure IFS is involved
here).

Parole ./configure is currently failing with a syntax error. Using bash,
zsh or dash 0.5.5.1-3 works.

Parole is currently in NEW so if you need to check the configure file,
the dsc is available at
http://debian.corsac.net/unstable/parole_0.2.0.2-2.dsc

I'd be happy to see the changes uploaded to Debian (it really annoys
if the system aborts one to two times per week).

Anyways, great windowmanager. But it would give an better user
experience if it wouldn't crash. :)

Bug#581420: util-linux: missing dependency on initscripts breaks installing in cdebootstrap/ debootstrap

2010-05-12 Thread Stefan Lippers-Hollmann
Package: util-linux
Version: 2.17.2-1
Justification: missing dependency breaks bootstrapping
Severity: serious
Tags: patch

Upgrading util-linux from 2.16.2-0 to 2.17.2-1 dropped the dependency on
initscripts:
 Package: util-linux
 Architecture: any
 Section: utils
 Priority: required
 Essential: yes
-Depends: ${misc:Depends}, lsb-base (>= 3.0-6), tzdata (>=2006c-2),

+Depends: lsb-base (>= 3.0-6), tzdata (>=2006c-2), install-info, ${misc:Depends}
 Pre-Depends: ${shlibs:Depends}

As a consequence, installing util-linux fails to install in cdebootstrap/

This happened because I uploaded the package to NEW on April 15, and that same
day libjerico-html-java was uploaded, with a new upstream version and with an
API breakage.
I'll work on this, porting DiTAA to the newer libjericho available in Debian.

Thank you!

Bug#577711: Please retry libgda on failing architectures

2010-05-12 Thread Luca Falavigna
Hi,

I tried to follow-up on FTBFS for libgda4 as shown in bug #577711, I
rebuilt it on amd64 and hppa porterbox and builds were successful.
I believe failure was related to older gobject-introspection versions,
so it should be fine on other architectures too.

Could you please give-back libgda4_4.0.8-1 on these architectures?

Bug#581297: kwave: FTBFS: /bin/sh: cmake: not found

Indeed, adding a build-dependency on cmake solves the problem. However,
there also is an rpath issues which prevents upload to unstable.

Package: samba
Version: 2:3.4.2-1
Severity: normal

When upgrading a domain controller from 2:3.3.4-1 -> 2:3.4.2-1 my domain became
unusable because the user/machine accounts were lost.

Running pdbedit -L showed none of my Windows accounts (just the accounts from
the Linux server).

Fortunately /etc/samba/smbpasswd still contained the accounts so:

sudo pdbedit -i smbpasswd:/etc/samba/smbpasswd -e
tdbsam:/var/lib/samba/passdb.tdb

seems to have recovered.

Running:

testparm -s --parameter-name "passdb backend" 2>/dev/null

shows tdbsam but there has been no change to smb.conf to cause that to be
different now.

Could this be due to not installing samba-common-bin when the other packages
were upgraded (I don't think so)?

Thanks!
Dave

Bug#581407: dansguardian - problem accessing ssl-pages without appropriate exceptions

2010-05-12 Thread Stefan Bauer
Package: dansguardian
Version: 2.9.9.4-1+lenny1
Severity: serious

Hi,

host without an entry in the exceptioniplist get a timeout trying to
access a https webpages. If i add them either into exceptioniplist
or add the webpage as an exception, i can load them properly. There
should be at least! an information for the user, that https-traffic
is not allowed by the appropriate host! This is a bug and took me 2
days to figure out. Not to mention ,that this is a productive
environment without options to just go ahead with a newer version.

Maybe this is the default behavior to block ssl-pages without
exceptions but anyway, there should be a "blocked" information for
the user - so the admin can adjust configurations to fit the needs.

this is already reported against dansguardian:

https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detail&atid=722098&aid=3000607&group_id=131757

FYI:
that's because kdelibs5-dev dropped cmake dependency but cmake
is not in build depends of those packages (it should be)

The full build log is available from:

http://people.debian.org/~lucas/logs/2010/05/11/kwin-style-crystal_2.0.3-1_lsid64.buildlog

A list of current common problems and possible solutions is available at
http://wiki.debian.org/qa.debian.org/FTBFS . You're welcome to contribute!

About the archive rebuild: The rebuild was done on about 50 AMD64 nodes
of the Grid'5000 platform, using a clean chroot. Internet was not
accessible from the build systems.

Bug#477060: [Fwd: [Gnewsense-dev] Restatement of AMS-LaTeX license]

2010-05-12 Thread Sam Geeraerts

AMS have updated the license. Is it possible to still get this into Squeeze?

 Originele bericht
Onderwerp: [Gnewsense-dev] Restatement of AMS-LaTeX license
Datum: Tue, 11 May 2010 19:34:08 -0400
Van: David M. Jones

Dear Benedikt, et al,

Enclosed is a copy of a new license file that has been added to the
following distributions on the AMS ftp site:

amscls2.zip
amsfonts.zip
amsmath2.zip
amsrefs-ctan.zip
amsrefs-tds.zip

These updated zip files should show up on CTAN shortly.

Thank you for your patience with my delays in distributing this.

Cheers,
David.

===
The AMS is in the process of restating and updating the licenses on
all components of the AMS-LaTeX and AMSFonts distributions in order to
bring their licenses into line with current standards of "free"
software licenses. Since it will take some time to update all
individual files, we're distributing this notice now to retroactively
restate the license on currently-distributed files.

In 2009 the font components -- e.g., AFM (.afm), MetaFont (.mf), TeX
font metric (.tfm), and Type 1 (.pfb) files -- of version 3 of the
AMSfonts package were released under the SIL Open Font License. Any
file released under the SIL OFL continues to be covered by that
license.

As of May 1, 2010, the following license supersedes any license found
inside any LaTeX macro files -- and associated documentation and
source files -- currently being distributed by the AMS:

This work may be distributed and/or modified under the
conditions of the LaTeX Project Public License, either version 1.3c
of this license or (at your option) any later version.
The latest version of this license is in
  http://www.latex-project.org/lppl.txt
and version 1.3c or later is part of all distributions of LaTeX
version 2005/12/01 or later.

This work has the LPPL maintenance status `maintained'.

The Current Maintainer of this work is the American Mathematical
Society.

Files covered by this notice include -- but are not necessarily
limited to -- the following, along with any associated documentation
files (README files, templates, examples, etc.).

FYI:
that's because kdelibs5-dev dropped cmake dependency but cmake
is not in build depends of those packages (it should be)

The full build log is available from:

http://people.debian.org/~lucas/logs/2010/05/11/kshutdown_2.0beta9-1_lsid64.buildlog

Sudo saves information about if lecture is readed in /var/run.
I have RAMRUN option in /etc/default/rcS, so every time after reboot, sudo
shows me lecture.

There is no policy violation here. Sudo doesn't fail if the state
information it stores in /var/run disappears... you're just annoyed by
the behavior it correctly exhibits in this situation. Fortunately,
there's an easy way to make yourself happier!

You can turn off the lectures by adding 'lecture never' to your sudoers
file. See the sudoers(5) man page.

I'll add a note about this to sudo's README.Debian file.

I could try with SSH, and it worked. So, this is only a video driver
problem.

*Breaks* may work, dependencies are not acceptable.
Are there any objections from anybody to trying this?

Also for a working system. There have been enough changes that the old
udev will not like the new configuration files and will probably not
work much, so the system must be rebooted ASAP after upgrading
kernel+udev.

FYI:
that's because kdelibs5-dev dropped cmake dependency but cmake
is not in build depends of those packages (it should be)

The full build log is available from:

http://people.debian.org/~lucas/logs/2010/05/11/kio-gopher_0.1.3-1_lsid64.buildlog

Justification: Policy 9.3.2

Sudo saves information about if lecture is readed in /var/run.
I have RAMRUN option in /etc/default/rcS, so every time after reboot, sudo

Hi Marc,

Thanks for pointing this out. I wasn't aware that it would totally tie
up a buildd.
This should reduce the timeout to 60 seconds (instead of one hour or so):

Cheers

I tracked this down to a gcc change:
ruby1.9.1 builds fine with gcc-4.4 4.4.3-2
but fails with 4.4.3-3

Further investigation is needed.

Can you repeat your inital tests with the lot of files to
  a) reproduce at least one original crash with the stock mpg123
  b) confirm (or) not that you do not manage to produce that crash with
self-built mpg123
?

Then... the obvious way would be to find out which one of the hardened flags
Daniel mentioned breaks mpg123. So... write a script that iterates over the
flags, and builds mpg123 with a reasonable subset of the combinations.

CFLAGS=... ./configure ... --with-optimization=0  # The latter option to really
only use your CFLAGS.

I'd like to see where this one is going. Will there be a bug to fix in mpg123
or not?

Alrighty then,

Thomas.

Good that i am not a developer so i can say crap and ask afterwards

As far as i understand i need for a successful boot udev and a kernel without
that option enabled. This doesn't imply to me that i need to install it in
the same dpkg call, not even in the same apt call. Both is pretty hard
to do if you can't express it in the dependencies. I can on the other hand
tell the user that he needs to install other stuff to get the full (or in this
case any) experience later on.
The kernel e.g. does it for some firmware files.

It previously "worked" as udev was optional - now it is important.
I already described why i put quotation marks around "worked" here,
as if we ever depend on that behavior we should have added also
the a-bunch-of-luck package to the dependencies of udev…

Yes, koffice needs a new upload to be instalable with KDE 4.3.4. Sadly
for making a new upload, koffice neess also a copyright review that will take
some time.

No, I don't think so. Requiring for execution is in my mind exactly the
same as "Depends".

Recommends implies that the package works without the other package in
some situations, but that is not the case here.

binutils 2.20.51.20100418-1 always installs binutils-gold - so, yes I had
binutils-gold installed. I had also the package binutils-gold installed which
just replaces /usr/bin/ld in that version

Ok, just downgraded from binutils 2.20.51.20100418-1 to 2.20.1-9 (without
binutils-gold) and now it seems to work.

But the problem is that it's uninstallable (from what I see, a package
can need another program to compile or execute, but not a
hard-dependency on an inexistent package).
Packages that need programs from outside our archive should at least
be installable, right?

Can't the dependency on oracle-instantclient-basic be downgraded to
recommends and a README.Debian be created, explaining that
oracle-instantclient-basic is needed? So at least the package can be
installed.

Thank you!

Nelson

That's why it's in contrib. From the policy:

Examples of packages which would be included in contrib are:

  * free packages which require contrib, non-free packages or
packages which are not in our archive at all for compilation or
execution,

Seems like broken IFS handling in read, postfix's post-install script
does:

test -n "$create" && {
exec <$daemon_directory/postfix-files || exit 1
while IFS=: read path type owner group mode flags junk
do
IFS="$BACKUP_IFS"
set_permission=
# Skip comments. Skip shared files, if updating a secondary instance.
[snip]
# Skip hard links and symbolic links.
case $type in
[hl]) continue;;
[df]) ;;
*) echo unknown type $type for $path in
$daemon_directory/postfix-files1>&2; exit 1;;
esac
[...]

And apparently the whole colon-separated line from postfix-files ends up
in $path instead of being split in the various variables.

Cheers,
Julien
